If you haven't done it already, you should rate the Hoary Bat 💞 They're my favourite and I would love to see your opinion on them
Absolutely, let's do it!
Today's Bat: Hoary Bat
The Hoary Bat has always put me in mind of a little powdered donut. There's an abandoned mining cave that's been turned into a museum and nature preserve in my area, and bat spotters frequently find these frosted babies hanging out there during the summer. I'd really love to spot one in person, but for now, I'll settle for this precious picture:
Tumblr media
Environmental Impact: The Hoary Bat has an incredibly wide habitat range across North and Central America, even reaching as far as Hawaii. With such a wide range, it's no surprise that they've split into several subspecies (which is so, so cool). They migrate from north to south in the autumn, or hibernate for short bursts using a "butt blanket" and torpor state to withstand cooler temperatures. Interestingly, they predate several pest species, but have a relatively restricted diet compared to other North American insectivorous bats. These guys also catch rabies fairly frequently, which is another hit to their score here.
🦇🦇🦇/5
Beauty: Oh, these guys are angels. Their wide faces and perfectly round eyes make them look like Precious Moments dolls with wings. Their coats, multi-colored with a delicate white frost, are the peak of winter fashion. I can't think of a single thing that would make these guys more appealing... top marks!
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
Power: Hoary Bats are largely solitary throughout the year. Upon mating in the autumn, the female retains sperm in her reproductive tract. She'll reserve it all winter, and come spring, she will fertilize her eggs and give birth by early summer. Delayed fertilization allows them to choose whether or not conditions are right to rear young, and controls for their generally lonesome nature. I first learned about this ability with bears, and I continue to find it fascinating. I will have to deduct points from the Power score, however, for their decidedly anti-clean-power stance: their leading cause of mortality is striking wind turbines.
🦇🦇🦇/5
Overall: This upcoming summer, hit your local mine. Maybe you'll find a Hoary Bat... or me, with a camera.
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇/5
(Today's sources: Animal Diversity Web, Bat Conservation International)
(PS: I couldn't find a convenient spot to mention this, but the Hawaiian Hoary bat is actually endangered. They're the only remaining native land mammal in Hawaii according to the National Parks Service. BCI lists some conservational efforts, which I'd recommend reading up on and advocating for if you're able. Thank you!)

Tumblr Coming in Clutch
With the "Based on your likes" again. And by coming in clutch, I mean sending me commie garbage.
Tumblr media
I could rant on this for hrs but I'll stick to the shorter version.
Most people that are homeless want to be homeless.
Those that don't want to be homeless fall under 2 categories (People who fell on bad times, and people who are mentally unwell.)
Where does the labor come from to build all these houses?
Assuming we use existing homes (or build new ones), who's to stop the homeless from destroying the home and turning it into a trap house? Who's to stop them from stripping the house for all it's parts and selling it for drug money?
What are you planning to tell people on hard times who are still working to make ends meet? "Just be homeless because then the gov will be forced to provide a home for you"?
Where then does the incentive come in for people to go back to work if they are just HANDED the fruits of someone else's labor.
Do you have ANY IDEA how much money it takes to buy a house in order to rent it out?
And then not just number 7, but also do you not realize how sheltered you are from changes in the market sometimes by being under a landlord? I had a one bedroom apartment with kitchen, bathroom, large Livingroom. For my rent, water, electricity, and trash services, I paid 600$ a month. Gas station around the corner, and 5 min or less from a Walmart. And so long as I was not using WAY MORE than average of the water or electricity, I would not be expected to pay more than that set amount.
Fact is, not just that, but if you own a place, YOU have to pay for the repairs when something isn't working. When you are renting a place, one of the perks is that so long as it's part of the property, and you were not the DIRECT cause of the damage, the landlord has a responsibility to replace it. Hell, if you are renting a home in an area with an HOA, often times the Landlord will deal with the HOA on your behalf. Also, there are often legal things that go into property ownership that people are protected from to some degree by renting.
And it's not a some rich person scheme to keep people out of homes either. THEY worked to get the money they needed to get their properties. And they often lose more than they make depending on the condition of the place they are renting out. And they have to make sure that they bring in tenants that will not destroy their property.
Are some landlords assholes? Yes. Are some landlords just soulless corporations that appoint someone to oversee a property? Yes. Is that MOST of rentals in the US? Absolutely not. And yes. Being a landlord is a job. Because there is legal paperwork, repair bills, you have to still manage the property, IE: lawn care, electrician work, pest control, etc, etc. It's a job where if you are in it alone, and you own very few properties, and you DON'T have an LLC to help you run things, then you are on call 24/7 more or less. Especially if you own an apartment complex. Then you are responsible for the management of every single part of your property. Up to and including any injuries, or other forms of legal liability.
AGAIN. I'm not saying there are NOT shitty landlords out there. But most really are not. And often they do/will want to work with you to help you out when you are having a rough go of it. But they have to pay property taxes and bills the same as everyone else. And they do it on your behalf because you don't own the property. Because if you did? GOOD F*CKING LUCK getting the city you live in to actually cut you a break.
*Addition to this post* Adding to number 4. Where's the money going to come from to buy these houses as well? Because people OWN them. Unless you are just advocating for the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to confiscate houses. Which is NOT a slippery slope. It's a cliff. Also a great way to make inflation go up while your at it.

Growing Questions, Growing Food
As a child I always loved the outdoors. Not in a particularly adventurous way (I was afraid to climb high into trees or run barefoot in the woods), but in a more quiet cautious way. I loved to lay in the grass in the schoolyard and look at insects or crouch down in the parking lot to observe the plants coming up through cracks in the asphalt. I would watch them and imagine stories for each of these living things. How did they get there? What was their life like? Did they have families? Friends? To my delight, I discovered that some of these questions had real, not just imagined, answers as my science teachers explained how seeds moved from place to place and how bees lived and worked together. As I learned more about nature, my questions only grew and I developed a deep sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world.
Tumblr media
Today I’m a fourth-year student in environmental science and my sense of wonder and delight for the natural world is still alive and well. The information I learn in class continues to fascinate me. I am able to appreciate nature not only for its aesthetics, but for the ecosystem services and wealth of knowledge it provides. Through my education at the University of Guelph I discovered in myself a true passion for agriculture in addition to my love for nature. This has led to my pursuit of a career in the agricultural industry. But what does food production have to do with nature interpretation? I would argue that agriculture is one of the most common ways that people around the world experience nature. Every crop we grow has been selected from a natural ancestor and every farmer must depend on the climate and soil in order to grow food. Growing food is when I feel most connected to the land and has allowed me to feel a deep sense of place in Southwestern Ontario.
Tumblr media
Throughout my life growing food has allowed me to develop a sense of place and feel at home wherever I am. There’s something about digging in the soil and deciding what you can grow in a very specific location that allows you to feel connected to the environment and a sense of “more”. Often throughout this process you’ll need advice from people who will explain to you the history of the land or provide insights unique to the particular area you are working in. This feeling of “more” is described in our textbook as knowing specific characteristics and how a particular place fits into a bigger picture (Beck et al., 2018). Growing food forces you to work with nature as sometimes challenges can only be solved with an understanding of natural processes or relationships. For example, a pest feeding on your broccoli may be controlled by creating habitat nearby for a natural predator.
Tumblr media
I owe it to my mother most of all for creating a sense of place for me in my own backyard. As a child I was often enlisted to help out in the garden and what I first thought of as a chore quickly changed when my mother gave me a strip of dirt at the side of our house where I could grow anything I wanted. I set to work digging out every rock from that strip and planting a row of strawberries that I would look at and care for every day. I learned as much as I could about gardening and tried out different plants on that strip for several years. From that small strip my interest grew and I have since worked and volunteered on several research farms and community gardens. These experiences have allowed me to see nature not only as untouched forests and ponds but also as the roots and reality of agriculture.

Organic Agriculture:  Meeting the Growing Demand for Chemical-Free Produces
In recent years, there has been a significant shift in consumer preferences towards healthier and more sustainable food choices.   As people become more conscious of the potential risks associated with chemical-laden produce, the demand for organic agriculture has been steadily increasing.  This article by Book My Crop - a cutting-edge platform that brings buyers and farmers together to buy as well as sell agriculture produces online in India explores the importance of organic agriculture in meeting the growing demand for chemical-free produce, with a specific focus on online availability in India and the agricultural landscape of Gujarat.
Tumblr media
Understanding Organic Agriculture:
Organic agriculture is a farming method that relies on natural processes and emphasizes the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water.  It prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  Instead, it focuses on building healthy soil through practices such as composting, crop rotation, and natural pest control.
Online Availability of Organic Agriculture Produces in India:
India, with its diverse agricultural practices and growing population, is witnessing a surge in the demand for organic produce. The advent of online platforms has revolutionized the accessibility of organic agriculture produces for consumers across the country.  Through e-commerce websites and mobile applications, individuals can now conveniently purchase a wide range of organic agricultural products, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products.
These online platforms have bridged the gap between farmers and consumers, making it easier for organic farmers to reach a larger customer base.  They provide detailed information about the farming practices used, enabling consumers to make informed decisions about the food they purchase.  Furthermore, doorstep delivery services offered by these platforms have expanded the availability of organic produce to areas where it may be challenging to find them locally.
Benefits of Organic Agriculture:
Organic agriculture offers a multitude of benefits.  First and foremost, it ensures that the product is free from harmful chemicals, thereby reducing the potential health risks associated with the consumption of pesticide residues.  Additionally, organic farming promotes biodiversity, conserves water resources, and helps mitigate climate change by minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
Organic agriculture also contributes to the livelihoods of farmers by providing them with opportunities to tap into the growing market demand for organic produce. By adopting organic practices, farmers can differentiate their products and potentially command higher prices.  Moreover, organic farming encourages sustainable farming systems that enhance long-term soil health and productivity.  Book My Crop is the only AI-enabled platform designed to bring buyers and farmers of India under one roof for the trading of agriculture produces in Gujarat, India.
Meeting Consumer Demand Online in India:
India, with its diverse agricultural landscape and large population, is witnessing a rising demand for organic produce.  Online platforms have played a crucial role in connecting farmers and consumers, making organic agriculture more accessible.  Numerous e-commerce websites and mobile applications now provide a wide range of organic agricultural produce, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products.
These online platforms offer the convenience of doorstep delivery, enabling consumers to access organic produce even in areas where it may be challenging to find them locally.  They also provide detailed information about the sourcing and farming practices employed by the producers, allowing consumers to make informed choices.
Organic Agriculture in Gujarat:
Gujarat, located in western India, is a state known for its diverse agricultural practices.  It has embraced organic agriculture as a sustainable solution to improve soil health, reduce chemical inputs, and protect the environment.  The state government, in collaboration with various organizations, has implemented initiatives to promote organic farming and create a supportive ecosystem for farmers.
The organic agriculture movement in Gujarat has gained momentum, with an increasing number of farmers adopting organic practices.  By eliminating the use of synthetic chemicals, farmers are preserving the fertility of the land and reducing the risk of harmful residues in the produce.  This shift towards organic agriculture not only benefits the health of consumers but also contributes to the conservation of biodiversity and the overall ecological balance.
Challenges and Opportunities:
While organic agriculture holds immense potential, it also faces several challenges.  The transition from conventional to organic farming requires knowledge, training, and investment in organic inputs.  Farmers need to learn alternative pest management techniques and adopt organic fertilizers, which may initially lead to a decrease in yields.  Additionally, organic certification processes can be cumbersome and expensive for small-scale farmers.
Tumblr media
However, these challenges can be overcome through supportive government policies, training programs, and financial assistance.  By encouraging organic farming through subsidies, market linkages, and technical support, governments can enable more farmers to make the switch to organic agriculture and meet the growing demand for chemical-free produce.
Final Thoughts:
The demand for chemical-free produce continues to rise as consumers become more health conscious and environmentally aware.  Organic agriculture serves as a sustainable solution to meet this demand, offering numerous benefits such as improved soil health, reduced environmental impact, and healthier food options.  In India, online platforms have played a significant role in making agriculture produces in Gujarat accessible to a wider consumer base, while actively promoting organic agriculture.  With continued support and investment, organic agriculture can not only provide safe and nutritious food but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of our planet.

Dear Readers,
As some of you know, I've worked at Enzo's for the past several years. (Just on weekends, and mostly because Enzo himself begged not to leave when my publication took off. I have a heart for the people!) As a waiter-extraordinaire, I keep my eyes and ears open for information and leads.
I never expected to be dished up the biggest story of the weekend, but lo and behold, some unfortunately familiar faces waltzed into our back room on Saturday eve. Readers, the wannabe private eyes (several of whom tried to kick me out of Joyce Byer's wake just last week), looked bad. Like they'd crawled up from hell!
Here are the facts:
A break-in was reported at Hawkins High School on Saturday night, just after sundown.
Early reports mention substantial damage to the gym floor, and even tampering with the 1986 time capsule.
ABC pest control was seen outside of the school in hazmat suits, loading up trashbags of what looked to be dead rodents.
Now, far be it from me to jump to conclusions, but.... with eccentric folks like Murray Bauman, known thieves like Max Mayfield, and certified loony tunes like Mike Wheeler and Jonathan Byers in their midst, one can assume that the unlikely crew and the break-in are connected.
Especially given the state of a few seemingly-innocent citizens. Sources say Suzie Bingham and Evan Beckett, both allegedly in town for the funeral, checked in to the after-hours clinic for routine checkups and rabies shots.
Still think it's a coincidence? Well, worry not, I saved the best for last. I overheard several comments throughout the duration of my service to this ill-fated group, including:
"That was crazy"
"Is everyone okay?"
"Anybody trying to f*ck up the ancestral plane?"
"That was f*cked."
I also heard whispers of a letter unearthed in the time capsule? It seemed to be weighing heavily on several of the diners, which only made me wonder-- what was it? The Zimmerman telegram? What international espionage are these teenyboppers involved in?
Though, I suppose you can't trust just anything from a table where drug paraphernalia was openly passed around. I'm pretty sure I saw a needle in this man's pocket! I mean, the horror! Enzo's is a family establishment! I even tried to call Hakwins P.D., but the line was busy. What is our town coming to?
Anywho, once again I've gotten off topic. The night took a rather... dramatic turn of events when it was revealed that we have a missing persons case right in our backyard.
Luke Wheeler was last seen at approximately 5:12 p.m. by Mike Wheeler (father of the year). He was scheduled to arrive at the Gillespie house at 6:30 p.m., and Sherri called the precinct when he was more than forty minutes late. Chief Powell canvassed the area and put out an alert at approximately 9:17 p.m.
Tumblr media
If you see anything, do call in to the precinct. I will be sending out updates when they are available. Parents, it's best to keep a close eye on your young. Remember-- always assume the worst! Use the buddy system! (Nancy, should you need an armed escort, I am available.) STAY ALERT TO STAY ALIVE!
Signing off,
Editor-in-Keith
THE STATS
SUZIE BINGHAM lost -60 HP and has sustained substantial injuries from the swarm of bats. She is expected to suffer from night terrors, shivers, and poorly-placed rashes.
EVAN BECKETT lost -60 HP and has sustained substantial injuries from the swarm of bats. He is expected to suffer from full-body shivers, vivid flashbacks, and constipation.
MAX MAYFIELD lost -25 HP by the end of the night. She sustained cuts on her hands and face from the bats, and gashes on her knees from her fall in the parking lot. She will experience mild symptoms of psychosis as a result of the vision.

Oh HEY! I Can Share This Now!
So talking about my shitty pest control job in the last post I suddenly realized: I’m no longer employed there and never will be again. I CAN TELL STORIES!
Okay. So. One thing you learn very, very quickly when you answer phones at a pest control service (or are in any job involving people and animals) is that people know nothing about animals.
Seriously. Not a damn thing. I mean, for example, they get the idea of ‘cat’, but the concept that a ragdoll and a bengal have inherently different personalities, grooming needs, space needs, etc. is a completely foreign concept. In pest control this means that people do not understand that there are some basic differences in how roof rats and Norway rats* function and therefore how you got about getting rid of them, while basically the same - exclusion, baiting, trapping - still requires some fine tuning. You are probably not going to trap roof rats by tossing four traps under the house. And your exclusion points are going to be unique to your house.
In short, beware of any company that gives you a treatment and a price over the phone. They are either one size fits none or that price is going to change radically**. I’d even be leery of ‘ballpark figures’. Now, there are different ways to handle pricing that are more ethical - my company did free investigations, another company I know charged for the investigations, but subtracted that from the total if you went with them - there are pros and cons to everything. Just know that if you call in and say ‘I have ants’ and they say ‘That’ll be $50, we’ll be out tomorrow’ you might wanna get a second opinion.
This is especially true of insects, because there are thousands - plural! - of ant species and they do not act the same!
(Okay, this is getting very long for one, short, stupid story, but bear with me. You need to know all of this to feel my pain at the end.)
The chemicals that will quickly get rid of one ant problem will make another ant problem exponentially worse. Now, if you’re a biologist who knows your ants and have nests in areas where you can get to them easily, etc, pretty much any ant can be easy to get rid of. If they’re in your walls, though, you need to at least make sure you have the right damn type of ant! And all ants like sugar, so don’t tell the pest control people you have ‘sugar ants’. That’s not informative at all!
You need your ants (or cockroaches, those are the other biggies) keyed out. The pest control people need to look at the animal, look for species specific traits that frequently require a magnifying glass, and figure out what, exactly, we’re dealing with.
One of the biggest bugbears in that job was people who wanted us to key things out over the phone. I mean, first off, yes, I had a license, but it wasn’t an inspector’s license, it was an operative’s license. Asking me to key crap was like asking an algebra person a question on advanced calculus. And I was the only person in the office who bothered getting a license, so everyone else was even more useless. But above and beyond that, you could not tell me what I needed to know! You couldn’t! Even with Norway vs. roof rats, unless you were very familiar with both species, the identifying traits were so subjective it was insane! Is it larger or smaller? Is the nose pointy or blunt? Are the ears large or small? Are you sure the ‘baby rat’ isn’t a fully grown mouse?
Can’t be done!
But boy howdy, there were people who were determined! They just had to have me try! And the more determined they were, the fewer brain cells they had.
The most memorable one was the lady who had caught a spider. She was concerned it might be a medically important spider and so she wanted it IDed. Now, while there are hundreds of spider species in this state, most of them are not of medical interest. Black Widows. Yellow Sacs. Hobo Spiders, which have actually been taken off the ‘medically important’ list due to lack of evidence. That’s it. But there has been at least one case of a brown recluse being imported and biting someone. I know because it was a relative of mine who caught the spider and took it to the hospital with her! So I could not, in all good consciousness, see if it met the description of a black widow or yellow sac and if not say ‘yeah, don’t worry about it’. I said we’d have to get an inspector out there to properly ID it.
She didn’t want to deal with it. She was concerned, but if it wasn’t dangerous, she didn’t want to take the time. “Look, can I just describe it and see if you can tell me what it is?”
Sometimes you just have to humor people. “Okay, describe it and I’ll let you know if it’s something I recognize.”
“Okay! It’s brown and it has eight long, hairy legs. What is it?”
... ... ...
I think what I actually said was “That’s could be any number of species. I’d have to send an inspector.”
What I wanted to say was “Congratulations ma’am, you have a spider.”
In retrospect, she could have been a prank caller. We certainly had enough of them. But honestly? After over seven years working there, I honestly believe she was just that big an idiot.
*which did not originate in Norway. Sorry, Norway, for whoever stuck your name on these rats.
**If they let you know up front that it might change radically, that’s fine. Ballparks are unreliable, but as long as you’re told it’s a ballpark, I will cast no stones.
