The Mothma Family
A lot of people do not like Perrin which like, valid, but I think there's a lot we're not talking about when it comes to Mothma family dynamics. I think Perrin is more sympathetic than he seems.
Sorry this is long, I have many thoughts.
Mon
In most interactions with her family it seems like Mon is the aggressor. Multiple times, Perrin has presented a neutral statement that Mon responds negatively to. She dominates the discussion, just like she dominates the household. Perrin's snide comments are usually in response to something Mon has said.
Mon is the breadwinner and a crusader at that. She seems to take her frustration out on Perrin, who she sees as aloof and uncaring. She resents their childhood marriage, shown through her constant derision of Chandrillan customs.
We know why Mon behaves the way she does, we see her stressors and her role. We see her struggle living a duplicitous life. We understand why she is hostile to Perrin because we know the stakes.
Perrin
I'm honestly on the fence about Perrin. There are three interactions I look at when wondering about Perrin's character. The dinner with the governors, the party at the apartment where Mon speaks to Ty, and the breakfast with Leida.
The Governor's Dinner
On the one hand, Perrin seems to have complied with Mon's wishes, he added the dinner to the calendar, discussing it with her a month in advance. He even seated her away from governors he knew didn't like her, even though they're his old friends. We could see this as him distancing himself from her, or him trying to compromise between their wishes.
Mon comes into the room and appears exhausted, Perrin tells her about the dinner, Mon gets frustrated, and he suggests she rest. He is either brushing off her concerns or genuinely trying to deescalate. I think its more interesting if it is the latter
I think this is further supported by the fact that he frames the dinner as an opportunity to change these people's minds.
Let's assume Perrin is genuinely just performing his duties as a husband to a galactic senator in good faith. He arranges the dinner as a get together with friends, seats Mon away from those most hostile to her but still includes them as an opportunity for Mon to work on them. In light of this, his line at the end stands out: "must everything be boring and sad?" But I think it can be explained by information shared with us later in the series.
The Party at the Apartment
We hear that he used to be the "university firebrand." He used to be a fighter, he used to be more of a rebel. Having lived through the pandemic, I honestly feel Perrin here. Fifteen years of fighting the good fight, Perrin might just be burnt out.
Tumblr media
This could be that Perrin was a fighter for the Imps, but that doesn't make sense in context. Ty brings up Perrin's character in reference to Mon's Charity fund, which Perrin dismisses as fruitless.
Edit: this could have also been a jab at Perrin from Ty. Ty poking at him, reminding him that he's always been apathetic and at Mon's mercy; in the shadow of her seeming moral purity.
I just don't think this is the case. The writers are refusing to go into depth on Perrin and Leida like they have other characters, hiding their motivations. I think there is a reveal in the future that will recontextualize all we know about them.
(If we believe Perrin is actually an Imperial sympathizer and that he is as hostile to Mon as he seems, then the dinner from episode 4 could make sense as an excuse to meet with Imp Warhawks, which is potentially reinforced by Perrin's shady connection to Davo Sculdun.)
The Breakfast with Leida
This breakfast is really interesting to me. We get to see Mon and Perrin's different parenting techniques. Perrin seems to be the 'fun' parent and Mon the 'strict' one. Perrin redirects to Mon when Leida insists her dad take her to school saying "it's up to her." This could be seen as Perrin shirking off 'parenting' Leida, leaving the unsavory business to Mon. On the other hand, this could also be read as Perrin deferring to Mon. Mon seems to want complete control over the household (probably a result of her precarious position in the rebellion and in the senate. She can't assert herself there, so she asserts herself at home). To Leida and Perrin this just seems domineering, any affection a facade.
When Leida says "I didn't start this conversation" we get a look from Perrin that seems to sardonically agree. This fits with the idea that whenever Perrin and Mon try to have a conversation, it turns hostile, usually because Mon makes it that way.
Leida
Leida is so interesting because we can only infer her relationship with Perrin. Their relationship seems closer than Mon and Leida probably because Perrin is around more.
As an audience I think we're supposed to infer that Perrin is corrupting Leida, turning her away from Mon, but I see it differently.
Almost every time Mon interacts with Leida she is telling her what to do, admonishing her choices, or disparaging her father, someone who (it seems) is more available to show her affection.
Mon and Perrin are set up as opposing parental figures and of course Leida would gravitate toward Perrin. The scene that especially hurts is when Vel gifts Leida the dress and instead of complimenting Leida, encouraging her enthusiasm, Mon makes it about her distaste for her husband: "Let's see what your father thinks." Mon repeatedly brushes Leida off, telling her to ask her father when she can be dismissed from the dinner party and giving her almost no positive interactions in a non-political setting.
I can see now why Leida thinks Mon wanting to drive her to school is all for show.
I also theorize that Leida thinks Mon is cheating on Perrin with Ty. She only gives suspicious looks at Ty (a sentiment echoed by Perrin who comments on Ty's frequent visits to Coruscant). She comments on Mon drinking "squigs," saying its disgusting, but only in reference to Mon. It could be a stretch but she seems to blame Ty for this behavior. Perrin is literally right there encouraging Mon to drink.
Conclusions
I understand why people don't like Perrin. However, I'm encouraged by the brilliant writing of this show. With almost all the characters we get nuance, we get histories, we get motivation. We haven't gotten that yet with the rest of the Mothma family.
From Mon's perspective, her behavior is understandable, her stress is real, the consequences of failure are extreme both for her and her family. Her behavior is a product of love.
If we remove all of that context, highlight the fact that Mon and Perrin communicate very poorly (honestly its childish, perhaps they never developed their communication style past their 15 year old selves), I can see where Perrin might be trying to coparent with Mon, but Mon is not in an emotional place to see nor accept Perrin's attempts. Perrin is the only person she can actually fight back against when she's under attack from all sides in all other aspects of life.
Mon is in moral conflict, while characters like Luthen and Cinta have made peace with their sacrifices. Mon is trying to have her cake and eat it too and it is manifesting as tension in her household.
And then Leida, a 13 year old, is thrown in this mix and all she knows is one parent who is affectionate and one who is strict. She does not like her mom and is inclined to see her as detached and mean. Of course she would think her mom is cheating and take her fathers side.
I hope Perrin has more to his character, something more than disaffected househusband, bitter about his marriage and his wife's career. We know something happens to her family, they aren't even discussed in any other SW content.
So I wonder what we will learn about Perrin. I predict Mon will introduce Davo Sculdun's son to Leida and I subscribe to the theory that Leida will jump at a boy her age, potentially thinking it will separate her from her mother (especially if she thinks is something her mom doesn't want her to do).
Edit: I'm also interested in the fact that Perrin has had multiple meeting with Sculdun. This is suspicious for obvious reasons and I want to see where it goes, but I can only think that if Mon and Perrin had a closer relationship, Mon could have gone though Perrin to get the loan. Alas, now she needs to do something that she is, at her core, against: arrange a marriage for her young daughter.
All in All, I think we can agree the writing of this show is amazing and I can't wait to see what they do with these characters!

something is brewing at Mon Mothma's house and we know nothing about it
after watching ep8 i can't help but think about not so subtle changes in Mon Mothma's husband (Perrin) and daughter's (Leida) behavior like uhhhmm ?? please look at them here:
Tumblr media
The Breakfast Scene aka the first time we see this family together. We get Ignorant Husband and Bratty Daughter. Notice how all three of them have different main color to represent them.
Now, let's look at The Party during the ep7:
show introduces to us new character - Tay Kolma
Tumblr media
Tay and Mon's outfits (again, all different colors) don't confront each other when you pair them together because they have same silk material in play (which also emphasize the childhood friends narrative -> we made of same cloth -> we should work together). Meanwhile Perrin and Leida still have no visual connection to Mon Mothma - BUT our eyes pick up a little detail from Leida's outfit -> it looks silky despite dress being made from different material:
Tumblr media
moving on to ep8!!!!
HELLO???? COHESIVE COLOR SCHEME??? ON ALL FOUR OF THEM? AND IT HAPPENS RIGHT AFTER NARRATIVE UPGRADED TAY KOLMA'S STATUS FROM "FRIEND" TO AN "ALLY" ????!!!! AND THEY MENTION HOW PERRIN WAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON IN THE PAST!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PERRIN'S OUTFIT STRAIGHT UP MIRRORS TAY'S AND LEIDA'S OUTFIT MIMICKS HER MOTHER'S DRESS!!!!
which brings us to my theory:
Mon Mothma's husband might be a member of anti-imperial movement on Coruscant 👀👀👀👀👀
*i hit the word limit here so please check the notes for follow up

You know, having people close to you feel the effects of oppressive systems can sometimes radicalize the. I don’t really think it will happen, but if Perrin is really anti-child marriage, he might start thinking about things. Though more likely Mon’s false support will drive a further rift between them.

It seems like Mon Mothma's done a REALLY good job of making herself seem like a pretty unimportant irritant if neither Perrin nor Blevin have a single passing idea that Mon might be LYING about Perrin's gambling in order to get away with taking money out of her own accounts.
Perrin sits there denying it and keeps asking who told her he was gambling again but never considers for even a moment that Mon might be framing him for anything, that she's lying for her own agenda.
She showed the stone in her hand, but everyone missed the knife at their throat, just as she said they would.
She truly did learn from Palpatine.
