The edible leaved Perilla frutescens cultivars (Chinese basil, shiso, beefsteak plant) thrive in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. This herb has foliage with a unique taste, which is said to be a combination of flavours including those of mint and basil, with a hint of cumin. I can never resist ‘taste testing’ a plant as I am passing by!

Kidney beans (pod)microwaved (cooking)

Lately, I've become obsessed with cooking in the microwave. Sprinkle the green beans with salt for 30 minutes. Microwave at 500w for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with the herb mix of chopped red basil, perilla, and yegoma. (All three are Labiatae)

最近、電子レンジを使った料理に凝っている。下ごしらえしたインゲンマメを長いまま、塩を振って３０分で、電子レンジに５００ｗ、５分掛け、赤バジル、シソ、yegomaを刻んで混ぜ合わせたハーブミックスをまぶす。（３つともシソ科）

Have you ever tasted the savoury Perilla herb (Perilla frutescens)? This is the plant to the left with the large leaves with purple undersides. The Perilla herb has an intensely savoury flavour that’s especially appealing with oily fish like salmon and gamey poultry like duck. It’s a popular herb in its native Korea and Japan. The complex flavour comes from a unique combination of natural plant chemicals found exclusively in Perilla, such as perillaldehyde. The chemicals in Perilla are currently being researched for their medicinal properties.

What I Read in June 2023

(via Frankenstein Daily) I thought honestly that every character gets done dirty in most movie adaptations, and also that if Viktor stopped having fevers every five seconds things might have not gone so badly.

I really liked this one, where it didn’t romanticize his disability but also didn’t focus only on the negatives either, and also how the author let our main girl actually have a voice when she wishes to express her feelings.

I want to smack both this poor girls families.

result of my brain deciding that harry potter was my new hyper focus subject. ^_^’ (I enjoy the books, please do not infer that I agree with or support the author in anyway.)

A fun beginning, should be interesting to see where it goes.

I enjoyed this volume, would like to have more of a look into his view of finding out he turns into a tiger though.

these were quite fun, I love this video game stuff, interesting that he’s the only one “playing” so far.

So good! (pulled the other two out of my closet to read right after finishing. )

still loving this series and how attached everyone is getting to each other.

Saksa keeles Perilla, Shiso, Egoma, Kkaenip või Sesamblatt, inglise keeles deulkkae või Korean perilla.

Üheaastaline õistaim Perilla perekonnas, huulõieliste sugukonnas ja iminõgeselaadsete seltsis.

Levinud Ida-, Kagu- ja Lõuna-Aasias, kus ta kasvab nii aias kui ka söödil. Teda kasutatakse laialt salatina või toitude sissemähkimiseks ja veel palju muud. Rohelistel lehtedel on sidrunitaoline maitse, punastes pigem sarnane aniisile ja lagritsale. Seemnetest pressitakse ka erilist toiduõli, mida kasutakse maitsetamiseks. Jääkidest saab teha väetist või sööta loomadele.

Pronksleht on ka ravimtaim, kui keeta ta vees, saab keeduvedeliku kasutada, et aidata krampide ja külmetuste vastu, või kui süda on paha. Samal ajal on ta ka lehtdekoratiivne ilutaim.

Seemnest paljundatav, vajab väga palju soojust ja igasugune substraat või pind peaks sellepärast piisavalt soe olema ja kevadiste ja sügiseste öökülmade eest hästi kaitstud. Seega on vajalik, et asukoht on väga päikesepaisteline, lisaks peaks muld niiske olema.

Kõrgus umbes 40-60 cm, lehed sobivad söögiks augustis, viljad ja seemned oktoobris. Punased toonid ja selgelt nähtavad jooned lehtede peal teevad taime päris kergesti ära tuntavaks.

Yegoma is very similar to Perilla, and in English, they are both Perilla. But they are not exactly the same as they have different flavors. As a taste preference, yegoma is preferred in Korea and perilla in Japan. In Korea, it is often eaten by wrapping meat.

Yegoma is notable for its rich content of omega fatty acids, which are found abundantly in sardines, saury, and mackerel, and convert into EPA and DHA, which are essential for the human body. Therefore, mountain people in Japan, who cannot eat blue fish such as sardines, cultivated Yegoma. It was wise.

In Japan, yegoma oil is now sold at a higher price than olive oil.

Yegomaは、シソによく似ていて、英語ではどちらもPerillaだ。だが風味は違うので、完全に同じものではない。味の好みとして、yegomaは韓国で、シソは日本でより好まれる。韓国では肉を巻いて食べることが多い。

Yegomaで特筆すべき点は、ω―脂肪酸を豊富に含み、これはイワシやサンマ、サバに豊富に含まれ、人体に必須なEPA、DHAに人体内で変化する。だからイワシのような海の青魚が摂取できない、日本の山の民は,Yegomaを栽培していた。賢明だった。

現在、日本では、yegomaから搾ったオイルは、オリーブオイルより高く売られている。
