have y'all ever thought about how Alear betraying Sombron and siding with Lumera actually guaranteed Veyle's survival
Sombron had a habit of killing his kids for being "defective". Sombron also had a fuck-ton of kids. we're never given an idea of how many, just that there were a lot, but considering how willy-nilly Sombron disposed of them despite needing a child to pass on his legacy or w/e, and how Zephia learns to not grow attached (and how Alear is implied to stop getting attached to their siblings after witnessing some of them die), i'm gonna assume there were a LOT. at least enough for them to basically be disposable
eventually, Alear and Veyle are the only surviving children. iirc, Alear is the only surviving child old enough to fight for Sombron by the time they meet Lumera, which is why Sombron doesn't kill them despite two colossal failures (allowing the dragon shard to be destroyed and failing to kill Lumera).
Alear mentions in their battle dialogue with Veyle that "[the thought of Sombron disposing of her] makes [them] sad." when Alear gives Veyle their dragonstone (it's not clear exactly where in the timeline this is; i'm gonna assume it's after Alear meets Lumera but before they defect (haha unfunny joke)), they say "Even though I can't stay with you, I'll always be your friend. If you're sad or lonely, remember...if this stone is intact, that means I'm still alive." this quote shows that Alear was aware they and Veyle weren't going to see each other for a while. the thing is, Alear is not planning on sacrificing themself to face Sombron; if that cutscene at the beginning of chap 22 is any indication, they were planning on living with Lumera and possibly searching for Veyle after the war was over.
based off the above, i think Alear knows that Sombron wouldn't kill Veyle if she was his only child, whether because Alear turned traitor or Alear died. i also think Alear wants to be Veyle's sibling, but they can't so long as both of them are under Sombron.
throughout the game, despite the fact that Veyle constantly refused Sombron's orders, she wasn't killed. she suffered horrific mental and emotional abuse, which isn't much better, but she held onto the hope that she would find her sibling and be a family with them. Sombron only tries to off Veyle when he's like. a centimeter away from his goal (which is still poor planning on his part; he's lucky Alear jumped in front of Veyle but if they hadn't, he wouldn't have all 12 rings and he prolly would've gotten ganked by Alear and their army)
tl;dr Alear giving Veyle their dragonstone was a premeditated decision so they could find each other after the First Dragon War, Alear knew for sure that Sombron wouldn't try to kill Veyle until then, and unfortunate circumstances led to things not working out the way Alear planned, Sombron's a fucking dickbag and Alear had every fucking right to shank him—
(someone please come scream with me about this)
