The Georgia Republican Party paid at least $220,000 last year to two law firms defending fake presidential electors who could face charges as part of a Fulton County investigation into efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn his 2020 loss.

According to recently filed campaign disclosures, the state party paid Strickland Debrow of Newnan, GA, about $170,000. Atlanta-based Pierson Law LLC, received roughly $52,000 from the Georgia GOP.

The disclosures come as outgoing state party chair David Shafer, one of the 16 phony electors, announced last week that he wouldn't run for another term. In his farewell letter, Shafer revealed that the party paid the elector's legal expenses.

"Thankfully, our State Executive Committee voted to ratify their acts and pay (the elector's) legal expenses," he wrote. "I have raised the money to honor that commitment so that none of them have had to pay a penny out of pocket."

A spokesperson for the Georgia Republican Party didn't respond to questions before publication. Representatives for Strickland Debrow declined to comment for this story. Holly Pierson of Pierson Law told 11Alive that none of the electors "did anything wrong."

"It’s incredibly frustrating that any of the Republican electors were put in the position of having to obtain counsel when it is so abundantly clear legally that none of them did anything wrong," Pierson said. "Recognizing that fact, the Georgia Republican Party voted to step up and protect its membership, which was the principled and courageous thing to do. The Republican electors recused themselves from the vote to ratify their actions and cover their legal expenses, which was otherwise unanimous."

Sixteen Georgians served as phony electors for Trump. They are:

The two firms paid by the Georgia GOP represented 11 of the electors — Amick, Brannan, Carver, Consiglio, Downey, Fisher, Godwin, Latham, Shafer, Still and Yadav.

Fulton County prosecutors honed in on the electors as part of their investigation to determine if the former president and his allies violated state law after the 2020 Presidential election. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said in a July 2022 court filing that the electors could face charges.

A Fulton County Superior Court Judge ruled last year that Willis couldn't prosecute Burt Jones, who currently serves as Georgia's Lieutenant Governor, because Willis hosted a fundraiser for Jones' Democratic opponent ahead of the November election. The Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia will determine if Jones should be investigated by a special prosecutor.

Legal experts previously told 11Alive that the electors may face fraud or forgery charges for the documents they submitted to state authorities and the National Archives. The 16 Republicans said that they were the duly elected presidential electors, and they falsely claimed that Trump won the election.

The Fulton County Special Purpose Grand Jury finished its eight-month investigation last month. The panel heard from 75 witnesses. Three portions of the jury's report was released Thursday. Jurors expressed concern that at least one of the witnesses may have lied during testimony. Key sections of the report remain secret.

So obviously it kind of blows to have your artwork used in the training dataset for an AI art program. Yeah. Sure. That's fair. I understand the feeling of "If that thing is making millions of dollars after combing my gallery I deserve a cut " and "They shouldn't be using my shit without my consent. Posting art is not consent to allow others to do whatever they want with it"

Those are both true statements that will never do anything about the existence of AI art nor will they ever stop AI trainers from combing publicly available images. But the thing is like...

The reason watermarks are showing up in the AI trained art databases isn't bc it was trained on a singular watermarked image. it's bc getty images hosts literally millions of stock photos that show up in google search with the exact same watermark. It's not regurgitating images that it was trained on and you'll never win any copyright suit about it bc derivative works are protected by copyright law. And, importantly, you want derivative works to be protected by copyright law, as is being proven repeatedly these days by the sue happy Townsend estate that is now suing people over chord progressions...

The threat to artistic livelihood presented by AI art is the same threat to artistic livelihood that graphic designers lost against programs like Canva. It's the same battle that was lost by translators against Machine translation. It is the same battle that the WGA is fighting right now against the potential for ai scripts in TV. While you can argue about the quality of the results these things deliver, you'll once again be missing the forest for the trees. The quality is a distraction. How the ai is trained is a distraction. It doesn't matter that the end product is, and always will be, worse without a human hand involved.

It is that the industry, to cut costs, will be employing these tools instead of paying real humans to make and do work that is best suited to real humans. An individual generating his DnD character through an AI in the long run probably won't actually cost an artist a penny bc most of those people were never going to commission someone in the first place. A machine translator helping me talk to a stranger who is asking for help on the street isn't taking work away from a translator bc there are no people paid to stand around on streets and look for such interactions. It's just helping me, albeit in a janky and partially incorrect way, figure out how to tell this person directions to the nearest post office. It's just giving Bob a picture to point to in the DnD session and say "this 15 fingered weirdo is me".

The problem is that advertising firms and animation studios, some of the last bastions of regular, reliable work in the art industry, are going to start using ai generated frames and images so they can hire fewer in house artists. It's that they're already trying to decrease the size of writing rooms so they can hire fewer in house writers. It's that they've already removed graphic designers in lieu of making the craftiest person at the office do the extra work of putting together your flyer on canva. Canva, who hires only a handful of in house designers to make their templates and pays them by contract with almost no, or straight up no residuals on each time that template sees use. Billy Badass who made an avatar of his MMO character on art breeder was never a threat to the art industry.

Poor ryan, getting lights shone in his eyes bc he probably has a concussion. At least Esposito & Montgomery are there with him. Lmao he says “No I don’t” & they force him into the ambulance anyway. (I’ve taken a pic of this, I don’t need to clip it. I do need a fic of it tho.)

Is this a Mycroft moment? In like the fourth episode of Murdoch Mysteries, they got the wrong guy & let Harcourt/Mycroft go. He ran away into the night & was never seen again in 16 seasons. I kind of hope we do see him again, just for the giggles & shock factor. Whether he is an unstable fellow or turned himself around. The 3xK is gone & I have a feeling we will never see him again. We could tho, another couple years later? A couple seasons from now? I think it would be great. Maybe also a dread pirate roberts thing, since Jerry didn’t actually kill any of the last three victims personally. (Me: looking back on this liveblog after I’ve seen 3x6, 4x4, 5x5, 6x9, & 7x14+15)

Well that was fun. Good episode. I like the detail with ryan esposito montgomery & the paramedics all in the background during the caskett scene

Summary: How are the Marshalls doing?

Former Professor!Walter Marshall x Penny Townsend (Asian ofc)

If you had told Walter ten years ago he’d be a doting father and a loving boyfriend—and husband in the near future—living in a suburban area in Maryland, he would’ve laughed at you, right in your face. But yet, here he is: a loving relationship with his Penny, a lovely five and a half year old and darling twin girls Layla and Emma, who just turned two years old a month ago.

Walter considers himself the happiest and luckiest man on earth. He never pecked himself for a man who turned into a pile of mush whenever he sets foot into his house, however when he is greeted by his three happy kids, who are such a mix of both Penny and Walter, it happens. All of their kids have Walter’s curls, but the same pout as Penny. They’re all pretty tiny, however Walter thinks they’ll get their growth spurt later on.

After a long day of work, he finds all three of his kids and his beautiful girlfriend sitting on the couch. They’re still in their pj’s, however they manage to tear their gaze away from the television.

‘Dad!’ Declan exclaims, jumping off the couch and straight into Walter’s thick arms. ‘I missed you.’

‘I missed you too, buddy,’ he says, giving the little boy a kiss on his cheek.

‘Daddy!’ Layla and Emma yell, carefully sliding off the couch.

After he gently places Declan on the ground again, he lifts up the twins and he’s peppered with kisses. ‘My darlings,’ he says. ‘I missed you two.’ He places them on their feet again and walks over to the couch. ‘Hi princess.’

Penny gives him a peck. ‘Hi honey.’

Despite the fact they both want to get married, Penny wanted to wait some more, because she wants the twins to be a bit older, so they can also remember the wedding. As long as Walter is with her, is able to share this life with her, he is satisfied.

But seeing Penny in a wedding dress? That he dreams about from time to time.

He plops on the couch and within no time he is surrounded by all the people he loves. While their couch is large enough for each one to have their own cushion, they like to cram onto one cushion. The three kids all babble, Declan a bit more coherent than the twins.

‘Daddy pj,’ Layla says, who is the more talkative one of the two girls. They both have the identical light brown curls and Penny’s large doll like features. It’s adorable and with the identical pout, he is quick to tell them yes and to change into his pajamas.

By the time he has changed into his plaid pajama pants and a sweater, he finds them all sitting on the couch, with five mugs (all different sizes) of hot cocoa on the coffee table in front of them.

‘How was everyone’s day?’ he asks, as he plops on the couch again, only to be buried underneath his kids again.

‘We watched three movies,’ Declan tells him, still a little lisp. He keeps on babbling about what the movies were about, the twins also speak at once and he can’t help but smile.

Coming home to his family, is always the best part of his day. He loves them so much. It’s scaring him sometimes, realizing how much more vulnerable he became. When he and Penny were in their first stages of their relationship, he felt so protective over her and realized that if anything were to ever happen to her, he’d be a mess. Now, he not only worries about his Penny, but also about his three kids.

Four apples of his eye, all in this shitty messed up world. He hates it sometimes and he wants to protect them from all the evil.

Penny snakes her arms around his shoulders, pressing a kiss on his cheek. ‘I love you,’ she whispers in his ear.

He looks over the side and smiles. ‘Love you too.’

That night, the twins are asleep and Declan is in his own room. Penny and Walter are downstairs, finishing up some cleaning. ‘Honey,’ Penny asks. ‘You okay?’

‘Yeah, I’m fine,’ he says.

‘Tough case?’

He nods, before he leans against the counter, crossing his arms in front of his chest. Over the last few years, Penny has grown pretty thick skin when it comes to his cases. Normally she’d pretend not to be grossed out, but failed miserably. But as she grew older, she became a lot more resistant to his work experiences.

Penny walks over to him and wraps her arms around his waist, placing her head on his chest.

‘I’m just so lucky to go home and be with all of you. Our lovely little family.’

She chuckles. ‘You sure you’re able to miss them tomorrow afternoon?’

He holds her face in his hands as he looks into her eyes. ‘What?’

‘My parents are watching them tomorrow. We agreed on that last week? Remember?’

‘Right, right,’ he is quick to say, pretending he did remember that agreement, though he has no recollection of it. Despite his best efforts, she pokes right through it, he can see it in her eyes. ‘What shall we do that afternoon?’

‘I know plenty of ways to fill that in,’ Penny says, standing on her toes to give him a kiss. She hums in content and whispers: ‘So, it’s a deal then?’

‘Of course,’ Walter chuckles darkly. ‘Can’t wait.’

‘Great, because I really wanted to deep clean the bathroom.’

He lets out a laugh. ‘I know you’re messing with me. Good one though.’

They hear one pair of footsteps carefully walk off the stairs and they both look at the door. ‘Mommy,’ Declan says, as he walks into the kitchen, ‘I’m scared.’

‘Oh, baby, why is that?’ Penny asks, already walking over to him, crouching down in front of him.

‘Monsters.’

Penny wraps her arms around the little man and lifts him up. ‘How about you sleep on our bed?’ she proposes. ‘Than dad will check your room and tomorrow night you can sleep there, safe and sound.’

Declan nods and from the looks of it, he is really tired, because he places his head on her shoulder, eyelids heavy with exhaustion.

Walter walks up to the two of them and says: ‘Dad’ll go check, okay?’

‘Okay,’ Declan mumbles.

By the time Walter has checked Declan’s room, he hears soft whimpers coming from the twins’ room. He opens the door and sees they’re wide awake, both with tears in their eyes. ‘No, no, no,’ he says, ‘what’s wrong?’

With one twin on each arm, he hears them mutter something about a bad dream, about monsters as well and how they want to sleep in their bed. When he walks into his own shared bedroom with Penny, he sees Declan deep asleep against Penny, who runs her fingers through his tiny curls.

‘Oh, sweeties,’ she says, when Walter sits in bed, the twins glued to him. ‘Bad dream?’

‘Yes,’ Layla and Emma say in unison. ‘Bad dream.’

It doesn’t take long for the two girls to drift off to a deep sleep as well and Penny places her head against Walter’s arm. ‘We sure have a lovely family,’ she says.

He smiles. ‘Oh, princess, we sure do.’
