The most unrealistic part of this movie isn’t the magical curse- it’s the fact that people thought she was hideous. Christina Ricci could have an elephant trunk hanging off her face and rabbit ears sticking up, and she’d still be one of the most gorgeous women on the planet😭

I really respect Catherine O'Hara for making an entire career out of playing awful mothers.

Watching Penelope (2006) again tonight and I’m reminded again of why I love it so much.
My mom never liked this movie when I was a kid. She never thought it was a good movie, and I suspect the reason why is because she sees too much of Catherine O’Hara’s character in herself. If you’ve seen this movie before, you know what I’m talking about lol.
But seriously, I adore this movie. The cast is stacked: Christina Ricci, James MacAvoy, Catherine O’Hara, and Peter Dinklage as the bad guy, with a cameo from Reese Witherspoon. Yeah, they have them speaking in a mix of British/American accents and that doesn’t really make sense (especially considers MacAvoy is Scottish but they made him have an American accent in this? Lmao), but imo it adds to the charm of the movie. The special effects don’t look too ridiculous. The romance between Penelope and Max is believable. The motivations of Peter Dinklage’s character are also believable. And the ending...it’s just perfection.
If you haven’t seen this movie before and want a cheesy romance flick that’s not too long (it’s 90 minutes including credits!), I highly recommend this film. You won’t regret it.

the way he first meets her and can’t see her and has to talk to her through a one way mirror so he’s really just looking at himself as she talks to him with kindness. like again. what if i loved you so much it forced you to see the beauty in yourself. what if we weren’t some predestined love story but just two people who met by chance and connected and stayed and had a profound influence on the other’s life and self to the point where we literally grew into better people together like a sunflower and the vine of a morning glory coiled around it. what if there was no me without you anymore because you changed everything. WHAT IF I LOVED YOU SO MUCH IT FORCED YOU TO SEE THE BEAUTY IN YOURSELF. i love you movie <3
