Why not believe? If in faith you risk nothing, but through faithlessness, risk everything? - Gemina by @misterkristoff and @amiekaufmanauthor ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~ Happy National Book Lovers Day! Featured today is my favorite book, in one of my favorite trilogies ever, that I takk about (maybe) too much. I just finished listening my way through (again!), but I've been listening or reading this trilogy every six months since my first read in 2019. I may be obsessed, but this trilogy and these characters always bring me joy and a mess of other emotions. That's the point of any book in my opinion. ☆Read what makes you happy!☆ ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~ #readersofinstagram #bookstagram #bookswelove #bookaholic #booklover #booklife #bookaddict #illuminaefiles #gemina #jaykristoff #amiekaufman #favoritereads #nationalbookloversday #pascalswager https://www.instagram.com/p/ChCYKnWgePK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blaise Pascal
'We know the truth, not only by the reason, but also by the heart.'
French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal was born on this day in 1623. Educated by his father, Pascal showed an impressive grasp of mathematics from a young age, and went on to become a pioneer in the fields of game theory and probability. At the age of eighteen, in an effort to support his father with extensive tax calculations, he also invented and constructed one of the first mechanical calculators.
After an intense religious experience, Pascal's commitment to Catholicism was renewed and he shifted his focus to religious, spiritual and philosophical writings. His most influential works are 'Lettres provinciales' and 'Pensées', the latter containing perhaps one of his most well-known ideas, Pascal's Wager, which argues for a belief in God.
This small porcelain sculpture of Blaise Pascal was made in Sèvres Porcelain Factory c. 1784.

Bet on It
Sun, you bum, if you weren't close,
you'd be just any other star, one cold
fleck on a black velvet painting. Earth,
you globular oaf, if it weren't for Sun,
you'd drop down Time's abyss like a cold
marble. Moon, you sycophant, why
don't you grow something on yourself?
Humans, you fatuous, big-brained
locusts, you're killing your home by living
in it. God, You are looking more necessary
all the time--the Back-Up Plan. Some
see you as a long shot, at best. I'm with
Pascal. I'm making the wager. It's not
a lock, but it's the smart bet, especially
as we turn the place into a sauna and strand
polar bears on ice cubes. And who would
have bet, back there in the Big Bang Bar
and Grill, that Sun, Moon, Earth, and humans
would end up just so, tensely tethered
to each other? It's all impossible, of course.
Do the math. Yet here we are. Bet on it.

[Análisis] Pascal's Wager: The Tides of Oblivion

Not my ordinary kind of post. Do you know of Pascals' Wager? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal%27s_wager Basically it considers risk vs benefit vs the unknown. in that case the existence of God We wont get into that, but we can apply the idea to time travel. The impact is the same but different. In order to participate, I need you and I to set a "time base point" The sooner we do this, the better it works. Think of a date. Dont tell me now. On this day you should bury an empty box in a position youll also make known later Youll only be able to use this after the date you bury the box, and the date you give. Thats why now is important. Because youll only tell me this date in future. So if were able to tell you the date and place before you tell me then it is proven that the me that you meet is no imposter.. And perhaps I could leave you something of importance now, from the future Excuse if its left field, but its a version of Pascals' Wager. Unless you do it, and later tell me, even posthumusly, I cannot help you to avert what u need averted. As Pascal figured out, youve nothing to lose, maybe something to gain. This is my brain when left alone :)) #timetravel #pascalswager #wierd #eccentric https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx4ywhxFrx7/?igshid=16qtt7fe95wym

#EditorsPick on #GraceandTruth RE: WHY IT IS NOT A "SAFE BET" TO BELIEVE IN GOD I was directed to read this post written by an Atheist, who debunked the premise of Pascal's wager, during a debate an a postabout my post about whether God is easily offended. Pascal's wager is often posed by Christians trying to defend their right to their Faith from unbelievers. It says simply that if God doesn't exist, the Believer loses nothing, but if God exists, the unbeliever will suffer loss. It is a good article for every Believer to read, especially those who are into apologetics, so they can better understand the atheistic perspective. I think my response to the authour, copied below, captures the problem Christians have with Atheists, which resort to them using Pascal's wager, without even considering that someone has used that argument before them... Read The Full Post Here My response: Hi Greta, Great and challenging piece on the topic of faith and Pascal's wager. I actually used it in a recent debate with an Atheist, and I will admit, it was made because I was "backed into the corner" regarding the issue of "proof"... The Pascaline
Have you seen the Pascaline?
Nor have I. It must have been fine.
It was a calculator from
the 17th century, built
by the legendary Blaise Pascal,
who even with a friend (Fermat)
also certainly found a math
to figure the odds of a roll
of the dice. Later,
he invented Pascal's Wager,
a thought-gamble in which
you must choose to bet (get
this) on whether God exists.
Is the smart money
on yea or nay?
Pascal's Pensées persist.
Black dots on white cubes
tumble in my untidy mind.
I really hate Las Vegas,
the true ghastly capital
of the USA, and I really
would like to say I've
seen a Pascaline. But I can't
say that I have.
