Boyfriend!Dodge Mason Headcanon: Part I
While I suffer from writers block involving all things Riff, here is something to hopefully hold you over! (I love one (1) cowboy.)
Going back to school only meant one thing, and that was Panic, but the first time Dodge laid eyes on you, he knew he was a goner.
His plan to lay low was already being threatened.
He learned quickly you struggled with math, and suggested he help tutor you, if you didn’t mind, of course.
You began going to his house after school on days he didn’t work. You really did enjoy your time with him; he made learning easy.
One afternoon you finished up your homework early, but neither one of you wanted your time together to come to an end so quickly. You two found each other on the sofa – reruns of some old television show playing in the background – and before too long, he was on top of you, lips crashing against each other, his hand creeping under your shirt, your hand creeping down past his belt.
He feared Dana would come in, so you two went to his bedroom.
And after that day, you two were never apart.
Everyone in school always joked how if there was one of you, the other one wasn’t far.
You would visit him at the diner while he worked; you had your usual spot at the bar where you’d read or work on homework.
He’d give you free drinks “because you’re cute”.
But it wasn’t long before he knew he had to tell you the truth.
You backed off for a little while, you couldn’t help it. There were doubts, because if he was lying about all of that, what else could he be lying about?
It was about a week before you came around again.
Originally you were against him joining Panic, but something happens that changes the course of your relationship, and now you need the money.
He was against you joining Panic, but you felt you had no choice.
You made a deal, if either of you win, you share it.
He is very protective of you, as you are of him.
Some of the girls in Panic try to fake a friendship with you to get details about Dodge, but you never budge.
You think Heather might be the only one being sincere, but you have trust issues.
Dodge promises that after the games, win or lose, you two will run away together.
You’ll start a new life, leave everything and everyone behind.
The only thing on his mind when he moved here was Panic, but you changed his course.
You call him your “cowboy” and go to all of his rodeo competitions.
You even publicly take his hat and put it on your head, making sure any prying eyes saw, especially Ray.
The absolute joy Dodge felt from that exchange was unmatched.
You two end up fucking in the backseat of his car to celebrate.
He loves to litter you with hickeys, so any boy knows you are his.
He always loves to do it because it pisses off Ray, who has had his eye on you since freshman year.
He loves it when you ride him when you wear his cowboy hat.
And you love it when he takes you from behind wearing his cowboy hat.
He really opened your mind up to a whole knew cowboy kink you didn’t know you had.

3 times Mike Faist brought his own idea to a character he played and it ended up being better than the original script:
1. Connor Murphy (Dear Evan Hansen)
Connor was originally supposed to sign Evan's cast normally but Mike Faist had the idea to sign it in all caps and have it take up a whole side of the cast. Writer Steven Levenson agreed that that was something Connor would do and that it helped give the audience an idea of who Connor was as a person. (Source: Dear Evan Hansen: Through the Window - page 72)
2. Riff (West Side Story)
The motion of Riff pressing his forehead to the gun in the scene where he purchases it, along with the "Might as well." line, wasn't in the script. Mike Faist came up with it and both director Steven Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner loved it, agreeing that it brilliantly conveys Riff's hopelessness. (Source)
3. Dodge Mason (Panic)
The line, "Then how'd those two kids die last summer?" that Dodge asks Heather in regards to Panic was supposed to be whispered, but Mike Faist chose to shout it instead. He knew that Dodge would have to threaten to make a scene for Heather to reveal the information he was looking for and writer Lauren Oliver agreed that it was a genius decision. (Source)

Okay, OKAY. It's finally happening. I am beginning my Riff fic, because I think, collectively, we all need a smitten, protective, completely enamored and downright in love Riff in our lives. At least I do.
In the mean time, I am still accepting any one-shot/headcannons/little trinket of ideas.
