@kttybot : ❛ is this seat taken? sorry, it’s a bit crowded here. ❜ / For Carmilla! ( Kitty, no, that's where the Overlord's sit smh i'm sorry, she's still learning )
Tumblr media
Oh? Silent, Carmilla's only immediate reaction is the slow lift of a brow, eyes taking in the sight before her : one of those little playthings, it takes a long moment of staring before she can place where she has seen this particular model before. It was... that moth. Yes, this must have been one of his toys.
What was she doing here?
If she had been sent with any attempt at spying, it was a curious attempt. How many spies announced themselves in such a manner? In that regard, Carmilla has to assume that the little thing has simply wandered over of her own accord. She had never much believed in coincidences, but there was little being discussed at the table that would run any serious risk if overheard.
Tumblr media
"...Please, take it." A loose gesture made towards the seat, expression softening somewhat as she regards the bot. This was the closest she'd ever been to one, and the craftsmanship was of particular interest to her. Robotics was outside of her field and, frankly, outside of her era. Still, her curiosity was piqued, and it is with a gentle hand that she reaches out, hooks a finger beneath the bots chin to get a better look at her.
"...priti guial, are you certain you should be wandering unattended?"

On todays break from our WIPs:
Headcanons for one piece languages:
Languages I think characters from the one piece universe could speak—minus English, cuz it gets my blood pressure up 😤 also with some OCs sprinkled
Assume everyone can speak the Common Language, which is how they speak to each other normally (unless I’ve specified I think they’re bad at it) also we’re splitting up the Spanish into dialects bc the hyperfixation is hyperfixating
OC River: Panamanian Spanish, his common is fluent but he just sounds so dumb sometimes, give him a break
OC Aurelio: Mexican Spanish (he dunks on River for using Caribbean slang but he’s just a hater don’t mind him ❤️)
Shanks: Mexican Spanish, dabbles in French (currently trying to learn German from Mihawk)
Buggy: German, french (his common is fluent but heavily accented I feel it in my bones)
Mihawk: Spain Spanish, German
Crocodile: Italian, Arabic, German, conversational Latin Spanish
Law: German, Russian, Spain Spanish (I don’t think he’s very good at it actually 😔💙)
Sanji: French, Argentinian Spanish
Robin: this learned girl can talk the ear off anyone anywhere, don’t ask me “But what about—” the most beautiful polyglot in the world has at least dabbled, I’m sure
Perona: French, Spain Spanish (she sponged it off Mihawk, wanted to learn German but gave up)
Nami: Swedish, Finnish, what Portuguese she sponged from Luffy
Luffy: Portuguese, we’re assuming Dadan taught it to him. But for some reason every time the Strawhats encounter a new language Luffy can magically speak it back like, he doesn’t know how he does it either
Franky: he’s got the common on lock but he was too busy becoming an incredible shipwright to learn anything else 😔
Feel free to add your own headcanons in the reblogs/replies, all are welcome!

A report from two human rights nonprofits claims that U.S. border patrol agents frequently treat migrants poorly and that Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the county’s largest law enforcement agency, has systemic problems.
“(CBP) has a persistent problem of human rights abuse without accountability,” reads the report compiled by the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) and the Kino Border Initiative (KBI).
“Many, if not most, CBP officers, and agents in CBP’s Border Patrol agency are professionals who seek to follow best practices. However, the frequency and severity of abuse allegations indicate that a substantial number of officers and agents don’t meet that standard.”
A WOLA database has listed more than 400 incidents of abuses against migrants encountered by CBP in the field or in custody since 2020, including physical violence, withholding of food and medicine and racial profiling.
Last month, debates flared over the use of horse patrols, after CBP concluded an investigation into a patrol that chased down migrants in the Rio Grande River last year.
The investigation found there were “multiple failures,” including training and “unprofessional and dangerous behavior” by the officers, but denied that any officer struck migrants.
One case the report focused on is that of Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez, an 8-year-old Panamanian girl who died in CBP custody in May. She was denied critical heart medication, and her death was recently classified as “preventable.”
Alvarez’s is one “of the most serious and concerning cases,” and “accountability is rare,” the report states. The report lists 13 cases where a person died due to the use of excessive force or a department failure to care for a person in custody.
The report claims that poor department policies make injuries and deaths more common, including encouraging high-speed car chases and improper use of force in crowd control situations.
Most cases of abuse go unreported, the report claims.
“Many abuses do not garner media or Congressional attention. Investigators and law enforcement never arrive at the scene, and [Department of Homeland Security] and CBP leadership likely don’t know they even occurred,” it reads.
Some of the problems are due to “opaque, bewildering, and slow-moving” reporting procedures, making it likely that cases slip through the cracks or never get reported in the first place, the report says.
“Right now, outside efforts to gain accountability for abuse must go through a convoluted system that has been cobbled together in the 20 years since the DHS’s founding,” it reads.
“Four agencies with overlapping responsibilities handle complaints and pass cases between each other. All suffer from personnel and other capacity shortfalls, and some have insufficient power to make their recommendations stick.”
A KBI study of 78 CBP complaints made from 2010-22 found that 95 percent failed to have a proper investigation. Only 1 percent resulted in disciplinary action.
Almost 20 percent of migrants who enter the U.S. suffer some form of abuse, KPI said, again acknowledging that the figure is likely an undercount.
“Most of the cases … would have gone completely unknown without reporting from victims and those, outside of government, who accompany them. That such abuses are happening so frequently at CBP and Border Patrol indicates that DHS’s accountability system has done little to dissuade or disincentivize them,” the report says.
The report lists more than 40 recommendations to improve the agency and stop human rights abuses at the border, including rewriting the complaint process, following through on investigations and punishing agents who commit abuse and changing agency culture to discourage abusive behavior.
“A U.S.-Mexico border that is well governed and that also treats migrants and asylum seekers humanely can go hand in hand and should not be seen as an unattainable aspiration,” the report states.

My sister's friend is flying over from New Jersey for a trip around Europe and is stopping by Sunday to see my sister for the day. She's the ex baby mama of my sister's ex-boyfriend best friend, and they've still managed to keep close contact. I met her once, and that one time I spent with her left me feeling a little iffy with her.
It was my 19th birthday, and I was stopping over in NJ/NY for celebrations after two of the worst years of my life. I was coming out of my depression, and we were at the end of a really exciting summer (We went back to NJ, then London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Rome, Sicily, and back to NY for a few days for our bday before returning to Jamaica, where I was living at the time). We decided to go out to dinner with friends from high school and others (which she was, she's from Union City) and I knew how fond my sister was of her. She's insanely beautiful (half Puerto Rican and half Panamanian) and another person I felt my sister liked more than me (I felt that way for a long time when we were younger with her friends). Anyways, come my birthday, she was there, being beautiful and, there.
But- and here's where my sour note with her comes in- she does this: I was checking my makeup before entering the restaurant on a car window. She walks up to me, all smiling and, to be honest, a bit too friendly, and says: "I'm sorry, honey, but can I go through?"
We were in a huge parking lot. She could have just walked around me literally everywhere else! AND she calls me "honey”. If I don't know you, don't be calling me honey. I just glared at her hard, like, trying to say with my face "girl, are you serious right now?" I don't want to say she was being a phony, but the fact that she wanted me to move for her when she was invited to my event, and had literally THE WHOLE FUCKING PARKING LOT to walk around really turned me off. I avoided her the rest of the evening. I still enjoyed myself, but didn't really understand why this girl I didn't know and was calling me honey was there (I know why, it's just, hello? it was my bday too).
Anyways, I hope they have a lovely day on Sunday. It has been 12 years since they last saw each other. But a big part of me wishes I would have the guts to exercise my pettiness and gate crash their "tea time" to say to her, loudly: "Hi honey!"

ARC Review of Out of Office by A.H. Cunningham
Tumblr media
Rating: 4.25/5 Heat Level: 3.75/5 Publication Date: April 23rd
Premise:
Genevieve is a high-powered hospitality executive intent on getting a promotion. Before she does, she decides to throw caution to the wind and embark on a vacation fling with Adrián, her driver in Panama. Two weeks later, neither of them are ready to end what they have.
My review:
This is a sensual, stunningly emotional read that touches on so many realistic adult issues while never sacrificing the romance. Genevieve and Adrián are in their thirties; Genevieve is a consummate career woman and you really understand where her drive to succeed comes from. Adrián on the other hand suffered from burnout some years prior and is now focusing on his family and their small hotel in Panama. Gen is endearingly uptight and type-A (her alternate persona is "Hot Girl Gen which... is so real of her), Adrián is super smooth and super laid-back, and they're technically in opposite places life-wise, so how do they make this work?
The answer is a lot of communication, but let me preface this by saying this doesn't make the book boring or *too real*. Instead, what you do get is two people who are instantly attracted to each other (and the chemistry is THERE right off the bat, and it's honestly kind of insane), but they need to make some tough choices when it comes to sustaining their relationship— What do they compromise on? What do they sacrifice? And this becomes even more relevant when their personal and professional lives collide and Genevieve's ability to do her job hinges on her successfully headhunting Adrián. As a woman of color, I really appreciated the nuanced way the author handled Gen's career, as well as a host of other topics like Adrián's bisexuality, the fact that Adrián isn't traditionally as "successful" as Gen career-wise (something you still don't see in a lot of romance novels), and Genevieve and Adrián's drive to revitalize small communities like Adrián's rather then outright gentrify them.
Also, the way A.H. Cunningham described the setting in places like Aguimar in Panama? Gorgeous. And love and care with which she wrote Afro-Panamanian culture really comes across.
The sex:
My big takeaway here is that the closer Gen and Adrian grew, the hotter the sex acts got. The initial sex scenes very sensual and more focused on building this emotional connection between them, and making them realize they were irreplaceable in each others' lives despite this ostensibly being a vacation fling. But once they found some semblance of permanence with one another, I feel like all bets were off. I loved how toys, masturbation, and video sex were incorporated into the story later (which makes sense since a part of their relationship is long-distance!), and Adrián had a strong "let me take care of you" vibe during sex which was never patronizing, but very hot. Also, Gen does, in fact, rim him during a blowjob, something I pleasantly surprised by.
Overall:
This is the second Harlequin Afterglow book I'm reviewing after The Boyfriend Subscription, and I've really enjoyed both of them. They've both been far more diverse than most of the contemporary romances I'm seeing out there, they're romantic, they have great sex scenes. I'd strongly recommend Out Of Office to anyone looking for a grown-up sexy kinda read.
Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

March 18th, 2024
I had such a weird day? So after coming home from the doctors I sat in my bed here and cried for like 30 minutes. And then i was like “suck it up buttercup stop feeling sorry for yourself” and i went to the kitchen to socialize with my parents. We talked for HOURS about politics, my background in art, I learned how to make hojaldras (basically just fried dough), talked to my parents about my family back in the states, lied and said i broke up with a BF to come to Panama (Sorry Shawn 😉). Then at around 2 they were like “vamos” and for the hundredth time since this adventure began, I got into a car not knowing where i was going or for how long.
So i found myself at a beautiful house in Costa Rica. It’s where my mom’s parents, and other siblings still live. My grandmother lost her leg to diabetes so they decided to prick my finger to test my blood to see if the infection was related to diabetes? Rest assured, my blood sugar was normal (incredible considering how much sugar i have here).
Now this deserves its own paragraph.
THE COFFEE. Holy shit. At my real host family, they drink instant coffee and even so it’s not every day. Today, I had 5 cups of black coffee. This family roasts their own beans and honestly after cup five was the closest I’ve ever felt to believing in god. I was also vibrating.
In the house was me, my mom, my aunt, two uncles, the girlfriend of one of my uncles, and my grandparents. All of them are from/live in Costa Rica and even though we were less than 30 minutes over the border, the difference between Panamanians and Costa Ricans is incredible.
One of the aunts, Nana, lives at home and takes care of the grandparents. She’s their home nurse, educated in health care but also specializing in homeopathic remedies. This girl cleaned my feet meticulously. She then made a bath with warm water, saline, and salvia leaves to soak my feet and genuinely it was the best i felt all day. Afterward she rubbed some cream on it, don’t know what, but at this point i didn’t care. I was so grateful to be sitting with this family. I ate fresh pineapple and coconut and spent the day sitting around chatting. I was exhausted, from stress of missing class, battling an infection, and an entire day where I only spoke Spanish (aside from 20 minutes on the phone with Hannah).
As they drove me home around 9:45 we swung by my families restaurant (still in Costa Rica) to pick someone up and sitting there were my 4 supervisors….
They didn’t ask why i was in Costa Rica, standing barefoot in the street as i BEGGED them to let me come to class in the morning. Francisco seemed impressed that i was so adamant on attending and said that I can observe but not necessarily participate because I won’t be able to wear close toed shoes.
My family in Costa Rica says that I am welcome to visit anytime once I get assigned to my site. I get A LOT of bonus point with host families for having no preferences/restrictions from food. There are a lot of complaints about volunteers being picky. Mango hasn’t been an issue because it’s not in season yet. If you’re hungry enough, everything tastes good.
Today made me feel much more confident in my abilities to be at site alone. I saw none of my fellow volunteers all day and I was able to hold my own and make new friends.

A neighborhood full of hard working people and their families from different walks of life have become unlikely friends. It’s these friendships that help everyone get through the triumphs and tribulations of life.
The main focus is on mixed race Latino parents, played by Jeremy Renner and Justina Machado, as they try and navigate their biracial family in tough times.
Character Description:
Jeremy Renner-Joshua Prescott, husband of Pepa Sarto-Prescott, is a 9-1-1 dispatcher who comes from a very loving but broken family. He must readjust to life after a horrible accident nearly killed him. He juggles this with raising his kids, supporting his wife in her endeavors, and dealing with past traumas in therapy. Joshua is biracial, primarily German, but has Irish and Panamanian on his mother’s side. He speaks fluent Spanish, and happens to be Hard of Hearing.
Justina Machado-Josephina (Pepa) Sarto-Prescott. A seamstress and Joshua’s wife, who is his number #1 supporter in his recovery. She juggles this with running her sewing business, raising her kids, and her life outside of work and family. She’s a first generation Puerto Rican-American, and speaks Spanish fluently as well.
Angela Bassett-Lenora Wilde. Pepa’s closest friend and confidant, who reminds Pepa of Clairee from Steel Magnolias. Charming, intelligent, loving, yet almost high with how she acts. She has no children, but it’s by choice. They go to the same support group for women (particularly women of color), and bond over their experiences. She is also a seamstress, working at Pepa’s boutique.
Zoe Saldaña-Megan Perez-Carter. George’s wife. She is a proud Afro-Latina woman, who passes on her Dominican traditions to her kids. She’s a pharmacist.
Jaleel White-George Carter. Megan’s husband. He is an ER nurse at the local hospital.
Keiko Agena-Violet Matsuda-Waller. Wife of Jesse. Japanese American. She and her husband helped the Prescott family a lot in the time after Joshua’s accident. She’s Joshua’s boss, and an experienced 9-1-1 dispatcher. Godmother to the Prescott children.
Chris Pine-Jesse Waller. He is Agnostic Jewish. Husband of Violet. He and his wife helped the Prescott family a lot in the time after Joshua’s accident. He is a chef at the town diner. Usually the mastermind behind neighborhood potlucks. Godfather to the Prescott children.
Melissa Peterman-Betty Geller. Kooky single lady who is man crazy, and knows she’s quote unquote “hot stuff.” Best friends with Pepa and Angela Bassett’s character. She works as Pepa’s assistant, but mostly cleans. She loves to gossip.
The Prescott Family:
Rory Joshua Prescott-14, eighth grade, the oldest son of Joshua and Pepa. He’s a talented soccer player who has a budding interest in journalism. He’s the spitting image of Joshua, including being left handed and needing reading glasses. Rory might not have the most common sense, but he does alright in school. However he’s painfully shy, and ends up getting diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
Marisol Josephina Prescott-13, seventh grade, the oldest daughter of Joshua and Pepa. She is in the process of converting to Judaism, and an excellent dancer. She sometimes struggles with her school work, but nothing a little tutoring won’t help. Definitely more street smart than her brother. She’s her daddy’s girl all the way. Dreams of becoming a professional mermaid.
Boy-6 Shares Joshua’s childhood passion for astrology.
Boy-4 Typical adorable four year old. Innocently says “Hi,” whenever he enters a room.
Girl-6 months. Traumatic birth because she was an unknown pregnancy.
