Fleeing to NYC to Escape The Third Wave
Historic US Election Review of Architectural Aspects: Architectural Column by Joel Solkoff, PA, USA Dec 9, 2020
Architects: Joel Flees to NYC to Escape The Third Wave
“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.”― R. Buckminster Fuller, Architect Construction of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., USA:

DATELINE Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Williamsport Pennsylvania, a town of 28,000 people and a treasure trove of architecture so beautiful…so beautiful that after I escape Death in Lycoming County (just beginning as I write). I will return on February 14, 2021 to the Peter Herdic Park Place Hotel completed 1865. September 2017. “The US Has Recorded its Most Deaths in a Week”: Today’s New York Times
Today’s New York Times, my country’s newspaper of record, published this alarming pandemic update, The NYT sometimes does a terrible job. I am reminded of Catullus “Odi et amo.” Case in point Michael Kimmelman, architecture critic defaming the New York Time’s tradition established by Ada Louise Huxtable. Kimmelman praised the aesthetics of a pretentious $70 million community library in the NYC Borough of Queens. Multiple architecture award winner Steven Hoss designed a library not accessible to disabled children, adults nor to fat people.
Michael Kimmelman
Bio provided by NYT: Since he returned to New York from Europe in the fall of 2011, Michael Kimmelman has been the architecture critic of The New York Times. He has reported from more than 40 countries and twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His work focuses on urban affairs, public space, housing for the poor, infrastructure, social equality and the environment, as well as on design. A best-selling author, he has won numerous awards over the years. The magazine New York titled an article about him “The People’s Critic.” The New York Times which should be ashamed at its contribution in encouraging architects to design libraries that do not work as libraries.

Ada Louise Huxtable photographed in her home, 1976 ©Lynn Gilbert. Published with permission. Wikipedia: Ada Louise Huxtable (née Landman; March 14, 1921 – January 7, 2013) was an architecture critic and writer on architecture. Huxtable established architecture and urban design journalism in North America and raised the public’s awareness of the urban environment.
Huxtable was in large part responsible for Zaha Hadid to emerge as an acidemia winning contests but not building. Thanks, to Huxtable Zaha Hadid was able to design the Beijing Airport, So great were Huxtable’s achievement’s that Columbia University’s Pulitzer Prize Committee created a special Pulitzer Prize just for her. Toward the end of her life, Huxtable got so pissed off at the New York Times that she moved her column to The Wall Street Journal. ++++ “Odi et amo” (“I hate and I love”) is a short poem or epigram by the Roman lyric poet Catullus, written in elegiac couplet form sometime around 65 BCE. It is often referred to as “Catullus 85” or “Carmina LXXXV” for its position in the generally accepted catalogue of Catullus’ works. Despite its brevity, it is one of Catullus‘ most famous and emotional poems, and its declaration of conflicting feelings for his mistress, Lesbia, is renowned for its force and brevity. — https://www.ancient-literature.com/

Learning to Live Again: My Triumph Over Cancer
Survivors of cancer wait in a limbo of uncertainty: Not knowing whether I would live or die,’ says the author, ‘seemed worse than the idea of dying.’ On May 5, 1976, with the filing of Tissue Examination S 76.1606, at age 28 1 became one of 7,200 Americans who had new cases of Hodgkin’s disease that year.
Library Journal review
Solkoff, Joel. Learning To Live Again: My Triumph over Cancer. LC 82-18743. ISBN 0-03-057647-4. Solkoff is diagnosed as having Hodgkin’s disease, a type of cancer. He fears the disease and the possibility of death. He undergoes radiation treatment to eradicate the cancer, “Radiation treatment was the worst experience of my life”: he loses his appetite and his energy, and he becomes depressed. He feels humiliation, anger, and misery. Written with honesty and feeling, Learning To Live Again is a story of remarkable courage in the face of disease. Highly recommended for public library collections. –Marliss H Hooker, Univ. of Connecticut Health Ctr. Lib., Farmington.
For the NYT, I wrote:
Hodgkin’s is a form of cancer of the lymphatic system. In 1950, according to statistics published in Radiologic Technology, the chances of surviving all stages of the disease was 6 percent. The medical literature now refers to it as “a disease once considered fatal.” Today, the odds of surviving Stage I, the mildest of the four stages, are estimated at 80 percent.
In a society in which cancer is the second largest cause of death and in which there is increased concern for the dying, the problems of those who survive cancer have been largely ignored. Until recently, the fear of death associated with cancer was so pervasive that the medical and social‐service community even neglected those cured patients who, as a result of their treatment, have to live with practical physical problems.

The NYT published today: “The U.S. has recorded its most deaths in a week.”
The United States has recorded its most coronavirus-related deaths over a weeklong period, as a brutal surge gathers speed across the country.
With a seven-day average of 2,249 deaths, the country broke the previous mark of 2,232 set on April 17 in the early weeks of the pandemic. Seven-day averages can provide a more accurate picture of the virus’s progression than daily death counts, which can fluctuate and disguise the broader trend line.
The United States is approaching 300,000 total deaths, with nearly 283,000 recorded, according to a New York Times database.

My Thursday Train to New York City
On Thursday, I will take a passenger train from Harrisburg, capitol of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Penn Station New York City
“Pennsylvania’s Capitol is, first and foremost, a public building belonging to the citizens of the Commonwealth. “It is also a priceless architectural and artistic treasure, a majestic symbol of history and power, and an icon of democracy and freedom. “When President Theodore Roosevelt attended the dedication of the building on October 4, 1906, he said, “This is the handsomest building I ever saw.” “The Capitol was designed in the American Renaissance style by Philadelphia architect Joseph Huston (1866-1940), who envisioned the building as a ‘Palace of Art.” “Built and furnished at a cost of $13 million, the Capitol features paintings, stained glass and furnishings by some of the best artisans of the day. The building incorporates various Renaissance designs in some of its largest rooms: Italian in the House Chamber, French in the Senate Chamber, and English in the Governor’s Reception Room. It also reflects Greek, Roman and Victorian influences in its art and ornamentation.” — This caption was written b y an official working for the Harrisburg Capitol Building

First New York Priority: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
This photograph of Dr. Paul Russo was provided by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center NYC Dr. Russo writes: “I am a urologic surgeon who specializes in caring for people with kidney (renal cell) cancer. I treat people with all stages of the disease, from small localized tumors to larger, more-advanced kidney cancers that have spread. I have more than 30 years of experience and perform about 250 major operations each year.:
On Monday Morning December 10th, I have an appointment with Dr. Paul Russo at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Eight years ago, Dr. Russo operated on my right kidney. He removed the large cancerous tumor that was chocking my kidney. Then, Dr. Russo removed my right kidney, put it back together so that it still works. How well will be the subject of our conversation. Since Friday is Dr. Russo’s last day before going to Uganda to perform surgery, Dr. Russo will have cardiologists, oncologists, specialists in radiation damage to my throat see me; also social workers and rabbis. There is also a good chance I will receive the Pfizer corona virus vaccine on Friday.

Amtrak’s future of high speed travel is soon here! On May 28, 2020, Amtrak tested the Avelia Liberty— the name given to the new Acela built by Alstom in Hornell, New York—for the first time under its own power to Thorndale. The next day they ran again to Lancaster Station on the Keystone Corridor, Amtrak’s Mainline between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This is perhaps the only time in history Amtrak’s new Acela will run on this track, so we took full advantage to capture the move on our new 4K 60p camera in Ronks and Coatesville, Pennsylvania, mileposts 59.2 and 38.6 respectively, at the former Irishtown Road crossing and the stone arch viaduct, aptly named the Coatesville High Bridge. As a bonus, Norfolk Southern local H84 was on it’s way up from Coatesville to W&N Junction while we were awaiting the Acela, so we catch them returning eastbound at Downingtown Station. I BIG THANKS TO: Virtual Railfan, Jersey Mike’s Rail Videos, and Mike Huhn.

“The organizers behind Williamsport’s Soap Box Derby are in the planning process for their 2021 race. “However, the continuation of that race is dependent on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic moving forward, said Jim Campbell, director of the organization’s local branch. “The whole world is in a state of anticipation,” Campbell said of the current unpredictable nature of the coronavirus pandemic. “Soap box racing allows children ages 7 to 18 to race in a “soap box,” or a racing cart propelled by gravity. The race was revived in Williamsport in 2010, and ran for 10 consecutive years before the pandemic impounded the carts in 2020. “Campbell said, as far as 2021 goes, the race will be returning, and will adhere to all guidelines issued by government bodies.”

That time Vancouver brought over a double decker bus from London, England. It was for the 1936 Golden Jubilee celebrations, and remarkably, omnibus B340 (LA 9928) is one of the few remaining examples that survive to this day.
The first three photos above were taken in Chiswick, London, and photos 2 and 3 show the men who were believed to be responsible for negotiating the loan of the bus, Mr. B.E. Adams (role unknown, possibly with London Transport?), the Agent-General for British Columbia Mr. W.A. McAdam, and the governor of the Hudson's Bay Company Mr. P. Ashley Cooper. The Lethbridge Herald ran the second of these photos on page 5, January 06, 1936, likely taken in late 1935, with the following caption:
One of the two remaining pre-war omnibuses of the London passenger transport board to survive the great war is to be loaned to the city of Vancouver for their jubilee celebrations next year. Mr. W. A. McAdam (LEFT) acting agent-general for British Columbia, and Mr. P. Ashley Cooper, governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, inspecting the old war-time bus at the Chiswick (London) garage of the London passenger transport board.
The number of remaining pre-war omnibuses has actually gone up since then. It looks like there are now at least 4 surviving models, though I don’t know if they can all boast pre-war manufacture dates; B43 (1910), B340 (1911), B1609 (1911), and B2737 (1914, but I’m unsure of the month). A fifth bus, B214 LA9802 (1911) has an original chassis, but the engine, wheels and front axle came from the remnants of two other B-Types, while the body was found in a Sussex garden that had originated with an East Surrey B-Type built in 1912. As of 2014, it looks like B214 is once again requiring restoration; I'm not sure what the plans are with this one. If it gets restored in the near future, perhaps we can bump the number up to five. I’ve since learned from a comment by Tony Barfield on flickr that B214 is...
...now owned by the Thames Valley & Great Western Trust and now in store near Windsor. LT Museum purchased THREE B type chassis from the Ward brothers collection near Harrogate, Yorkshire. One they have restored is B1056, which is now the Battle bus.
Additionally, the Self-Preservation-Society notes an unrestored chassis B1056, though I don’t know if this has since been used elsewhere. You can see a photo of this chassis from 2014 here. B5103 was sold back in 2014 for £281,500 at Bonhams (where there’s an extensive vehicle history), though this example dates from 1922.
In a number of photos, the Vancouver Archives refers to the bus as "Old Bill", but the real name "Ole Bill" didn’t really apply to bus B340 at all. A little closer to the truth, CVA 612-004 refers to the bus as "Old Bill’s" brother, though it should have been "Ole Bill’s Brother". It was the London General Omnibus Company B43 that became the WWI memorial known as "Ole Bill", and since the Brits were unable to loan us their national treasure for our 50th anniversary, they sent us the next best Omnibus, B340. CVA 612-006 informs us that the bus arrived at the Ballantyne Pier in Vancouver on May 6, 1936, and CVA 612-007 reveals the bus was a little bit temperamental, and the engine refused to be humoured! Finally, it did manage to get off the ship.
London Transit Museum provides a brief background on the original "Ole Bill", describing how the bus got its name:
A brass shell was mounted on the dashboard, ornate brass plates for the numbers on the bonnet sides and a brass bust of ‘Ole Bill, the cartoon figure created by Bruce Bairnsfather, formed the radiator cap. This association with the hugely popular cartoon character was to rapidly give the bus its nickname of ‘Ole Bill, commonly but incorrectly rendered as Old Bill. The title was derived from Bairnsfather’s first cartoon of two Tommies under fire in a shell hole, Bill saying to his companion, ‘If you knows of a better ‘ole, Go to it!’
B43 had been given a new body and overhauled for the Palace in 1920. Battle honours were added to the windows – Antwerp, Ypres, Ancre and Somme – before being handed over to the Auxiliary Omnibus Companies Association. The veterans used it for parades and funerals. At the King’s behest, the bus and veterans from Underground and the General took part in the first Armistice Day parade from 1920.
B43 remains preserved in the Imperial War Museum in London, while B340 is part of the London Transport Museum Collection. B-Type bus B2737 was recently converted to honour the “Battle Bus” of WWI, and more can be learned about this bus at the London Transport Museum.
It would appear the Vancouver Jubilee committee was still to some extent, re-enacting the end of WWI with this bus, as they filled it with soldiers and flags and paraded through the streets, much like the original "Ole Bill" had done in 1920.
This early double decker bus was of fundamental significance for transit in London, and the ripple effect was felt around the world. Our neighbours in Victoria have been using double decker buses since 2000, much earlier if you include the tourist buses run by Gray Line Tours, and Vancouver has just begun preliminary testing of the next generation double deckers on certain routes. To provide us with some of the significance of the B-Type bus, Doug Rose provides the backstory, along with some remarkable vector drawings that he created, shown above. From his website:
...there are strong arguments to say the B-Type was London’s first ‘standard’ motor bus. Though they were far from all being the same, the model was certainly the first to be mass produced and entered service in late 1910. The chassis, which varied in height, carried wooden bodies from more than one builder, closely reminiscent of their horse bus forebears. Steel wheels of different designs were used, with solid tyres, though there were no front brakes. A product of dominant operator the London General Omnibus Company, the bus was a success. Its overhanging upper deck variations saw a few different seating layouts too, though the norm was 16 lower and 18 upper. The early radiators had a flat top sporting ‘LGOC’, later being replaced by those more curved and displaying ‘GENERAL’. The wheelbase varied and a few single deckers were also built. Experiments with the ‘lifeguards’ between the wheels eventually settled on that shown in this drawing and these were retrospectively fitted to older buses. The bus entered service in 1911 though this drawing attempts to show B340 as closely as possible to how it looks in its state of preservation in 2014; several aspects need to be considered however. Requisitioned for the War effort in 1914 and staying in London, it returned to passenger service in 1916 but with a new body. It was withdrawn in 1924 and retained for preservation. After some meandering of locations and uses, it ended up in the British Transport Museum at Clapham in 1960. It was re-painted in red, as shown here, though B-Types had been a darker red until 1913. On the vehicle though not originally fitted are the front headlamps, added from 1913; the driver’s sun visor is a later addition and a far more modern offside mirror has been added; some of the reproduction adverts use typefaces not designed when the bus was in service.
Looking at those solid rubber tires, I can only imagine the experience must have been a rather bumpy ride! However uncomfortable, they were important first steps on the road to mass transit, and we’re fortunate to have shared in this historic legacy.

Downtown Raton, New Mexico as seen in 1939.  Photo digitized by the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives for the collection of the Raton Museum.  (Thank you, pogphotosarchives, for helping me attribute this photo properly!)
A little obscure cinema serendipity exists in this view:  the feature at the Raton Theater is Angels Wash Their Faces, the sequel to 1938′s Angels With Dirty Faces.  Both movies featured the Dead End Kids (Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, et al) reprising their breakthrough roles in 1937′s Dead End.  They later evolved into the East Side Kids and eventually into the Bowery Boys.
The Bowery Boys’ hangout was a sweet shop something like the one pictured above, called Louie’s Sweet Shop, with Louie played by Bernard Gorcey, Leo’s father.  Photo below shows the Bowery Boys in front of Louie’s Sweet Shop in an unspecified movie from the series (photo from imdb.com]:

Visiting Artist Lecture: Allison Stewart, Thursday April 13th
We are excited to welcome Allison Stewart, a Los Angeles based artist, to join our Culmination and Senior Seminar classes this week to lecture about her work. Please plan to meet in Rood 51 on Thursday April 13th, at 7:30pm to learn more about her work and she will join in our critiques for the day following the lecture.
Allison Stewart grew up in Houston, Texas and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA.  She received her MFA in Photography from California State University Long Beach and her BFA in Painting with a minor in Art History from the University of Houston.  Her work explores the construction of American identity through its relics, rituals, and mythologies.  Her work has been shown in gallery and museum spaces internationally, including The Contemporary Art Center New Orleans, The Torrance Art Museum, The New Mexico History Museum, Houston Center for Photography, SITE: Brooklyn, and Soho Photo Gallery in New York City.  In 2015 she was a Houston Center for Photography Fellowship Honorable Mention and in college was awarded the Ellen Battel Fellowship at Yale university. Her work is included in the Rubell Family Collection, The New Mexico History Museum Palace of the Governors Photo Archive, and private collections.
In addition to her photography practice, Allison is also an active member of the Association of Hysteric Curators.
The Association of Hysteric Curators (AHC) envelops a fluid, evolving, trans-generational group of women who gather to discuss contemporary feminism and the historicity of the term. They seek to explore notions of female protest and the presence of gendered articulations through a non-hierarchical structure based in dialogue and exchange. The AHC has been in the news recently for their involvement in a recent protest in support of Ana Mendieta. Read more about this protest from the LA times here.
Allison is also currently working on a project in collaboration with Los Angeles based artist Mary Anna Pomonis, also a member of AHC. Their collaborative project, Resurrecting Matilda, is featured in this month’s Artillery magazine. Check it out here.

Remembering local photographer Nancy Hunter Warren today. In 2003 Nancy began to lose her eyesight. In order to preserve her photographic work she donated her entire archive to the Palace of the Governors Photo Archive. The collection consists of about 10,000 negatives and prints documenting the landscape, people and culture of Northern New Mexico. Happy birthday Nancy. Rest in peace.

LAST WEEK TO SEE: EXHIBIT | LOWRIDERS, HOPPERS AND HOT RODS Miss Rosen for Crave Online
Perhaps it is due to the vastness of the land that the car has become an integral part of American identity, becoming a symbol of self-determination and the power of free will, an expression of one’s identity and a showcase for personal style. In the southwestern corner of the country, the lowrider has become just this; more than a mere mode of transportation, it is a way of life and a form of art that celebrates the creative spirit of Nuevomexicanos.
To celebrate, the New Mexico History Museum, Santa Fe, hosts Lowriders, Hoppers, and Hot Rods: Car Culture of Northern New Mexico now through March 5, 2017. The exhibition, curated by Daniel Korashek, features an extensive collection of photographs by Don Usner, Annie Sahlin, Jack Parsons, Sam Adams, Norman Mauskopf, Dottie Lopez, Gabriela Campos, Meridel Rubinstein and others. In addition, it also includes classic cars, a chromed and touchable engine, miniature-scale model-car collections, trophies, memorabilia and other ephemera.
