Painter Momopie
It’s rather unfortunate when a game becomes rather forgotten due to reasons out of its control. In the case of one such game, Painter Momopie, it was because the game was exclusive to Japan, and also perhaps because people dismissed it thinking it’s a simple Pac-Man clone, and also possibly for its cute looks. It really is a shame, because looking past those reasons, it presents such a great concept for a game, with some going as far as to say it’s a hidden gem on the Game Boy.

I’ll never understand how or why the game pictured here--Painter Momopie--isn’t more popular with GameBoy fans.
For starters, its packaging is as cute as can be. (Heads up: check out a bunch of photos of the Painter Momopie box, cartridge and manual.) Also, its in-game graphics are similarly adorable. And then there’s its soundtrack, which is cozier than it has any right to be.
If you’d like to learn more about this Pac-Man-ish GameBoy gem, read my Painter Momopie review. Or flip through the Painter Momopie instruction manual.

Japanese GameBoy instruction manuals seriously were the best.
They weren’t as colorful as your typical Famicom or PC Engine manual, but they were much more to the point, which is a big plus in my book.
Also, most Japanese GameBoy manuals used two-tone or “spot color” printing, which gave them a warm and unique look that, in my mind at least, really stands the test of time.
The Snow Bros. Jr. manual, above, is a good example. The manuals made for Bubble Bobble, Kitchen Panic and Painter Momopie are a few others.
Anyway, to see more of what I’m talking about, check out my latest blog post, which is stuffed with scans of the Snow Bros. Jr. instruction manual.
