Sitting on your porch, you sip from a cup of sweet tea provided by your lovely Aunt May, when you hear the sound of a truck approaching. A cloud of dust can be seen flying up from the dirt road as the beaten-up yellow pick up from the McCall farm rolls up the edge of your aunt's driveway. A freckle faced, redheaded boy parks the car, and hops out, his face and arms already red from having been working in the sun all day. You huff, but call out to your aunt. "Aunt May! That McCall boy's here!" You yell, a twinge of annoyance in your voice.
Ever since your parents split up, you moved from the city to live with your aunt May in this godforsaken hick town. You've always seen yourself as a city-girl, and just the thought of spending even a month on some dusty farm in the middle of nowhere made you want to gag. Despite the fact you've been here for several months now, the feeling has not gone away. Aunt May is nice, but you miss your friends, and you would rather die than go to another country-bumpkin harvest festival or Sunday service. Your predicament isn't helped by Joey McCall, the youngest son of the McCall family. From what you've gathered, the McCall's have been the largest family in this county for years. While not necessarily rich, they are well-known as salt-of-the-earth people, always willing to help. The McCall family has six kids, with the oldest four already married and starting their own families in the county. It seems that's Joey's goal too.
Everyday, even before you arrived in town, Joey was hired as a farmhand for your aunt, tending to animals and mucking the horses. He took pride in his work, and it only furthered his position as a town darling. When you arrived, despite your arrogance and clear disgust at your new life, he feels that you just need to see how great it is to live in a community like this. Joey hadn't really ever felt anything serious for the girls from town, and some would even say he didn't seem like the romantic type. This was far from the truth, as it was plain as day what he wanted when he would go doe-eyed at the preachers sermons on marriage, and god's purpose for it. He hasn't relented since he met you. Flowers, offering you baked goods, offering to do your chores, whatever you need to get him on your good side. Frankly, you can't stand him. It's not that you hate him persay, but you want nothing to do with this community of red-necks, and you would NEVER sink so low as kissing one of these country bumpkins sons.
Joey hops up the porch with a grin, adjusting the strap of his overalls as he approaches you. 'Aunt May, please hurry up and give him his chores already!' You think, trying to suppress rolling your eyes. "Mornin', stranger!" He teases. "It's a nice morning, sun's not too hot neither..." You nod, trying to simply wait out the conversation. He waits for you to speak, and when you don't, he sighs, but is happy to do the talking. "I'm glad I ran into you, I hadn't seen ya the last few times I visited. I-I sure hope you're not avoidin' me!" He laughs awkwardly, his grin faltering a little when you don't deny that this was your intention. He clears his throat, and quickly turns around, grabbing something from his back pocket. He thrusts his hand out, and a bundle of mixed flowers and weeds rests in it, still covered in dirt. You look disgusted at the half-dead bouquet.
"I don't want that." You say. His hand shakes a little, and he rubs the back of his neck with his free-hand. "Yeah, I understand. I was actually riding Maisie this morning, and by the time I saw these out in the field, she'd trampled right over em' with her hooves." He tosses the bouquet away over the porch, and it falls apart immediately upon impact with the ground. "It was stupid a' me to think ya'd like em'. Worth a shot though!" You open your mouth to retort, but before you can your aunt finally comes to the porch.
"Mornin' Ma'am!" Joey greets, and she responds sweetly, before pointing out a few things round the farm from her spot on the porch she'd like him to get done. He nods, and after grabbing the toolbox he'd always leave by the stairs, he sets off. You decide you've had enough off outside for today, and head back inside, placing your now empty glass on the counter.
Several hours go by, and as you flick through the channels on the tv, (most of which are static due to the terrible signal out here), you hear your aunt call you from the kitchen. As you enter, you can see she's finishing preparing lunch, a salad bowl to her left and a knife in her hand. Her free hands steadies some lettuce on the cutting board. "Hiya kiddo', how's your day been so far?" She asks. You don't hate your aunt, and lie to protect her feelings. "Fine. Just fine." You lean against the counter. "That poor McCall boy has been out there all mornin', hasn't even come in to ask for a glass of water." She sighs. You roll your eyes. "Be a dear and bring him this sandwich, would ya?" You want to say no more than anything, but when your aunt raises her brow and gives you that look, you quickly take the plate and scurry out to the barn.
As you approach, the sound of hammering and heavy breathing can be heard. As you enter, you see Joey trying to patch the gate on one of the horse-stalls. It seems he sent the horses out into the field, as the barn is empty save for you and him. "My aunt wanted you to have some lunch." You say coldly, placing the plate on top of a turned-over bucket which you considered to be the only place clean enough for it. Joey looks up, eyes wide in appreciation. "Well, thank ya' very much! I'll admit, I've been getting might hungry sittin' out here tryna' fix this darned gate." He huffs. He thinks it's a problem with the hinge. You let out a 'hmm', in response, and begin to leave, when Joey abruptly hops up and grabs your wrist. As soon as he sees your face change to one of disgust and shock, he recoils.
"Sorry to spook ya', I just wanted to ask you something before ya' ran of like ya' always do..." He places the hammer down, and his hands come to fidget at his side. "There's a party being held soon, outside the church. It's a picnic on the lawn sorta' thing, we have one every year. It's a real big deal." You raise an eyebrow. "I guess what I'm tryna' ask is if you'd considering going with me? I could show ya' around, help you meet some of the other townsfolk. Hell' ya' could even meet my sisters! I bet ya'd get along swell." His smile become shy, his freckle disappearing into his skin as a bright red blush covers his face. He hopes you think it's just a sunburn. You sigh, and shake your head. "I'm sorry, Joey. I don't think so..." You say. He frowns, but quickly nods. "Nah, I get it. It's kind of a big event. Maybe we could start with something smaller, maybe just the two of us? Say- I know a real nice spot north of the creek, I could take ya down there, a-and we could-" You let out a loud groan, and stomp your foot.
"No, Joey! It's not that I don't want trampled flowers, or I don't want to go to some big event with all you hick's, it's that I don't want you!" You exclaim. His face falls immediately, that light in his eyes extinguished like squashing one of the fire flies you'd see in the fields on a hot evening. "What..." He mumbles, shaking his head a little. "I don't want to date some small-town guy, okay! I don't even want to be in this town. I have a life back in the city, where I belong. Shit, I've got a BOYFRIEND!" You yell. His sadness at your rejection falls for a minute, and he seems to freeze his panicked breaths. "Ya- Ya' gotta' beau already?" He asks, his voice trembling as he swallows heavily. "A beau? What the hell does that mean, some kind of country talk? Yes, I have a boyfriend, and a very handsome one from the city at that." You sneer, turning your nose up at the boy.
"He pretty?" Joey mumbles, licking his lips as his gaze falls to the floor. You raise an eyebrow at the odd question. "Yes, he's very handsome." You respond. "S' got a lotta' money?" He asks. You nod again, not bringing yourself to be able to speak at Joeys sudden change in demeanor. When Joey does finally look up again, his face is no longer blushing red, but red with shame and embarrassment. Tears prick at the corners of his eyes. "W-well, it ain't gonna work out. I know how boys from the city are. They only want one thing from girls... that's what the preacher says." He points out the barn door. "You know Peggy, from the grocery store? She went and ran off with a boy from the city once. H-he knocked her up and left her alone, no where else to go. She came back to town, and she eventually married my brother Samuel. She always says he's the best thing that happened to her. He saved her..." Joey whimpers, his fist trembling at his side. You scoff. "Please, boys from the city have plenty to offer-" He cuts you off. "MORE THAN ME?!" He yells, a sob cracking his voice. "Have you done it with your pretty beau? Has he made you feel good?" You gasp, shocked at his vulgar question. "I don't have to tell you that..." You exclaim. "I'm not asking, I'm tellin' you to tell me." His voice is now filled with an equal tone of contempt, though you don't think it's direct at you, but rather the image of your boyfriend he's conjured up in his head. "He has. We've had sex before, he was my first." You say, swallowing nervously as you try to stand your ground.
"Then lemme ask you one more thing..." Joey huffs. "Is he gonna' marry you? Get ya' a nice house, some pretty dresses, keep ya' safe?" You shrug. "Uh, we're only twenty, we don't need to think about that." Joey shakes his head. "Cause'... Cause' that's what I'd do for ya'. Get you a nice ring, somethin' to match all your pretty dresses and clothes from the city. I'd build ya' a house right on my ma and pa's land, make sure we're still close to the family, but still give us some privacy..." He swallows harshly, taking a few steps towards you. "But most of all, I'd make sure you were safe, safe from any city boy who'd try to get off in ya' and then leave." He's now only a few inches from you. "And I intend to do that." He whispers.
You gasp as his calloused hands grab your wrists, turning you around to face the barn wall. He frees one of his hands up and moves to the stall door he was working on, bumping it open with his hips and shutting it behind the two of you. "L-Let go you brute! Get off of me!" You yell. He rips the red patterned bandanna he usually wears around his neck to keep the sun off, and quickly shoves the cloth in between your pretty, soft lips. As you try to kick, your feet only seem to bounce off the boys firm chest. "That's one thing about us farm boys, we're pretty strong. Firm, ya' know?" He whispers. He forces you to turn over, and you sit on the floor of the stall with your back to the wooden wall of the barn. Joey fumbles around, looking for something. His hand brushes across a rough rope for leading the horses mixed into the hay of the stall, and in just a few moments your hands are bound up to a horse feeder, just above your head. You whine through the gag, tears beginning to fall down your face. He shakes his head.
"Nah, c'mon now... don't cry. It's gonna be okay, I promise ya'." He whispers, brushing away one of your tears with the pad of his thumb. "Don't be scared, I'm not gonna do anything that hurts ya', I just wanna prove to you how good I can be. I realise, I can give you all the things that I said earlier, but... but I know the one thing that city boys have given you." Your eyes widen when you understand his words. He smiles softly. "I know the pastor says we should wait till' marriage, but I kinda need to convince ya' to marry me, and I know now to do that I have to prove that I can give everything some city boy can, and more." His hand comes to rest on your knee, before he uses the palm of his hand to bunch up the fabric of your pink skirt, now smudged with dirt. "Sorry about the location, didn't want anyone to see us. I-I'll buy ya' another dress after this, one even prettier, okay?" He says. Hiking up your skirt, your trembling thighs are visible to him, and the sheer lace of your panties allows him to see you without even taking them off. "Wow, I've never seen something as pretty as this..." His fingers trace the top of the lace, brushing your outer lips slightly. Despite your fear, the contact with a sensitive spot makes you whimper through the makeshift gag. "Maybe I don't wanna get ya' a new dress, maybe I want to see ya' in more of these." He laughs a little, rubbing the back of his neck.
His rough hands try to pull down the fabric around your womanhood, though your resistance makes it hard. Eventually, he groans and simply rips the lace in two, tucking it into the pocket of his overalls. "Surely, since this is damaged now, ya' won't need it." He mumbles. He toys with just the fabric in his hands for a moment, his curiosity evident, before he turns back to you. "I'm gonna get a look at ya', okay? See what exactly a pretty girl like you is workin' with." He roughly slots himself in between your knees, making closing them impossible. His large fingers part your folds, giving him a full view of your moist, aroused pussy. He bites his lip, letting out what can only be described as whimper. "G-geez, darlin'. This is definently better than them' health videos they used to show us in the schoolhouse..." He sighs. Joey's face falls for a moment, suddenly insecure.
"I guess you'll be wanting to see me now, too." He removes one hand from your inner thigh, and unclasps the shoulder straps of his overalls. "I-I'll admit, I know there's a little more to all this, but I only really know the basics, so I'm gonna show ya' what I know how to do. Rest assured though, I'm a quick learner." He stammers. His hand is shaking, and it takes several seconds for him to even undo one button on his overalls. Eventually, they fall, resting just below his wait. He lifts his button up shirt slightly, revealing a pair of briefs, and a very prominent bulge. He blushes as he looks down at it, and your eyes widen at the size. "Y'know, I've never had to deal with these before I met ya'. But, sometimes I go home and thinkin' of you is the only way to get em' to go away." His face is even redder with shame. He pulls the briefs down, allowing his cock to spring free. It's thick, and veiny. Somehow, it's freckled, much like his face. He spits into his hand, shivering as he rubs it down his length. "Sorry I don't have something better than my spit. I know it's kinda' gross, but, we are doin' it in a barn." He pulls his hips forward a little, rubbing the tip of his cock against your entrance, which against your will is now soaked with arousal. "See, I've already got you wet, I can do whatever that boyfriend back home can do for ya'." He says.
"Listen, I know ya'd said you've had sex with him, but I know it can still hurt a little. So, I promise to be real gentle with ya'." He stroke your face with his free hand, and presses his chapped lips to your forehead in a tender kiss. "I'll never get over how much softer you are than me..." He whispers. He begins to hump his manhood against your entrance, biting his lips each time he angles away from you instead of penetrating. "Huh, this is a lil' harder than I thought..." He seems upset at the idea he is under-performing. He takes his hand, and with a solid grip on his member, he pushes the tip just past your hymen, making you squeak into the gag. Before he's even fully got the tip in, his legs are shaking at the feeling. "Oh... Oh lord..." He stammers, fighting the urge to put himself in you all at once. He musters all his strength to pull out, then go back in, just a touch deeper this time. After a few thrusts, he's almost bottomed out in you. Despite your shaking head, your pleas for him to stop, muffled by the gag, soon turn to wanton moans. He places his hands against your hips, allowing him to work himself in and out of you. "God, you're so wet, a-and it's tight... God, didn't know you'd be this tight." He shakes his head though, and leans forward. "Not bad though, not a bad thing, darlin'. You feel so good around me, do I make you feel good too?" In a moment of weakness you nod, prompting him to grin widely. He's so overwhelmed in the moment, from the pleasure and happiness, that his eyes begin to swell with tears. He quickens his pace, almost sobbing now. "My pretty darlin', taking me so well. Making me feel so good, such a good girl. Not city boy could give you what ya' need, not like me..." He huffs. He angles his hips up just a bit, so his tip smacks against a spot deep inside you.
At this, you practically convulse, making him continue once he notices your reaction. "I'll make you finish, don't worry. That's what a good beau does, makes you finish..." He groans, his pace now rapid as he hammers at that spot. Both you can him feel a coil forming in your stomachs, ready to burst. "Hah, I think I'm gonna cum to, you wanna' come together?" His minds fills with thoughts as he thinks more on this while chasing his high. "I already said I-I would marry ya', build ya' a house. We could add on an extra room, for a baby." Your eyes widen in panic at the thought. "Don't worry, I wouldn't leave ya' if you got pregnant from this. That's what that city boy did to Peggy, remember?" He moans. "I'd help ya' the whole way. Build our little one a crib, get them clothes, and I'll bet you'd still be beautiful, if your worried about that." He assures you. You can feel his cock twitching inside you, as as the coil inside you bursts, you feel yourself cumming around him. He gags, inhaling a breath at the feeling. Soon, you feel him convulsing to, a warm liquid filling your caverns as he groans. "God, you're milking me, taking all my seed. So good for me... C'mon baby, just let me stay in a little more, fill ya' up." He groans. After a few seconds, he finally pulls out, and pants, wiping some sweat from his brow. He makes sure to close your legs, wanting to keep in all the seed. He chuckles a little. "Y'know, I'm sure that seed'll take pretty quick... my dad says all the McCall boys are fertile..." He pauses .
"That's why I've got so many siblings."

Apple fucked us on right to repair (again)
Tumblr media
Today (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. Tonight, I'll be in person at LA's Book Soup for the launch of Justin C Key's "The World Wasn’t Ready for You." On September 27, I'll be at Chevalier's Books in Los Angeles with Brian Merchant for a joint launch for my new book The Internet Con and his new book, Blood in the Machine.
Tumblr media
Right to repair has no cannier, more dedicated adversary than Apple, a company whose most innovative work is dreaming up new ways to sneakily sabotage electronics repair while claiming to be a caring environmental steward, a lie that covers up the mountains of e-waste that Apple dooms our descendants to wade through.
Why does Apple hate repair so much? It's not that they want to poison our water and bodies with microplastics; it's not that they want to hasten the day our coastal cities drown; it's not that they relish the human misery that accompanies every gram of conflict mineral. They aren't sadists. They're merely sociopathically greedy.
Tim Cook laid it out for his investors: when people can repair their devices, they don't buy new ones. When people don't buy new devices, Apple doesn't sell them new devices. It's that's simple:
https://www.inverse.com/article/52189-tim-cook-says-apple-faces-2-key-problems-in-surprising-shareholder-letter
So Apple does everything it can to monopolize repair. Not just because this lets the company gouge you on routine service, but because it lets them decide when your phone is beyond repair, so they can offer you a trade-in, ensuring both that you buy a new device and that the device you buy is another Apple.
There are so many tactics Apple gets to use to sabotage repair. For example, Apple engraves microscopic Apple logos on the subassemblies in its devices. This allows the company to enlist US Customs to seize and destroy refurbished parts that are harvested from dead phones by workers in the Pacific Rim:
https://repair.eu/news/apple-uses-trademark-law-to-strengthen-its-monopoly-on-repair/
Of course, the easiest way to prevent harvested components from entering the parts stream is to destroy as many old devices as possible. That's why Apple's so-called "recycling" program shreds any devices you turn over to them. When you trade in your old iPhone at an Apple Store, it is converted into immortal e-waste (no other major recycling program does this). The logic is straightforward: no parts, no repairs:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/yp73jw/apple-recycling-iphones-macbooks
Shredding parts and cooking up bogus trademark claims is just for starters, though. For Apple, the true anti-repair innovation comes from the most pernicious US tech law: Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
DMCA 1201 is an "anti-circumvention" law. It bans the distribution of any tool that bypasses "an effective means of access control." That's all very abstract, but here's what it means: if a manufacturer sticks some Digital Rights Management (DRM) in its device, then anything you want to do that involves removing that DRM is now illegal – even if the thing itself is perfectly legal.
When Congress passed this stupid law in 1998, it had a very limited blast radius. Computers were still pretty expensive and DRM use was limited to a few narrow categories. In 1998, DMCA 1201 was mostly used to prevent you from de-regionalizing your DVD player to watch discs that had been released overseas but not in your own country.
But as we warned back then, computers were only going to get smaller and cheaper, and eventually, it would only cost manufacturers pennies to wrap their products – or even subassemblies in their products – in DRM. Congress was putting a gun on the mantelpiece in Act I, and it was bound to go off in Act III.
Welcome to Act III.
Today, it costs about a quarter to add a system-on-a-chip to even the tiniest parts. These SOCs can run DRM. Here's how that DRM works: when you put a new part in a device, the SOC and the device's main controller communicate with one another. They perform a cryptographic protocol: the part says, "Here's my serial number," and then the main controller prompts the user to enter a manufacturer-supplied secret code, and the master controller sends a signed version of this to the part, and the part and the system then recognize each other.
This process has many names, but because it was first used in the automotive sector, it's widely known as VIN-Locking (VIN stands for "vehicle identification number," the unique number given to every car by its manufacturer). VIN-locking is used by automakers to block independent mechanics from repairing your car; even if they use the manufacturer's own parts, the parts and the engine will refuse to work together until the manufacturer's rep keys in the unlock code:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/#kitt-is-a-demon
VIN locking is everywhere. It's how John Deere stops farmers from fixing their own tractors – something farmers have done literally since tractors were invented:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/08/about-those-kill-switched-ukrainian-tractors/
It's in ventilators. Like mobile phones, ventilators are a grotesquely monopolized sector, controlled by a single company Medtronic, whose biggest claim to fame is effecting the world's largest tax inversion in order to manufacture the appearance that it is an Irish company and therefore largely untaxable. Medtronic used the resulting windfall to gobble up most of its competitors.
During lockdown, as hospitals scrambled to keep their desperately needed supply of ventilators running, Medtronic's VIN-locking became a lethal impediment. Med-techs who used donor parts from one ventilator to keep another running – say, transplanting a screen – couldn't get the device to recognize the part because all the world's civilian aircraft were grounded, meaning Medtronic's technicians couldn't swan into their hospitals to type in the unlock code and charge them hundreds of dollars.
The saving grace was an anonymous, former Medtronic repair tech, who built pirate boxes to generate unlock codes, using any housing they could lay hands on to use as a case: guitar pedals, clock radios, etc. This tech shipped these gadgets around the world, observing strict anonymity, because Article 6 of the EUCD also bans circumvention:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/10/flintstone-delano-roosevelt/#medtronic-again
Of course, Apple is a huge fan of VIN-locking. In phones, VIN-locking is usually called "serializing" or "parts-pairing," but it's the same thing: a tiny subassembly gets its own microcontroller whose sole purpose is to prevent independent repair technicians from fixing your gadget. Parts-pairing lets Apple block repairs even when the technician uses new, Apple parts – but it also lets Apple block refurb parts and third party parts.
For many years, Apple was the senior partner and leading voice in blocking state Right to Repair bills, which it killed by the dozen, leading a coalition of monopolists, from Wahl (who boobytrap their hair-clippers with springs that cause their heads irreversibly decompose if you try to sharpen them at home) to John Deere (who reinvented tenant farming by making farmers tenants of their tractors, rather than their land).
But Apple's opposition to repair eventually became a problem for the company. It's bad optics, and both Apple customers and Apple employees are volubly displeased with the company's ecocidal conduct. But of course, Apple's management and shareholders hate repair and want to block it as much as possible.
But Apple knows how to Think Differently. It came up with a way to eat its cake and have it, too. The company embarked on a program of visibly support right to repair, while working behind the scenes to sabotage it.
Last year, Apple announced a repair program. It was hilarious. If you wanted to swap your phone's battery, all you had to do was let Apple put a $1200 hold on your credit card, and then wait while the company shipped you 80 pounds' worth of specialized tools, packed in two special Pelican cases:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/22/apples-cement-overshoes/
Then, you swapped your battery, but you weren't done! After your battery was installed, you had to conference in an authorized Apple tech who would tell you what code to type into a laptop you tethered to the phone in order to pair it with your phone. Then all you had to do was lug those two 40-pound Pelican cases to a shipping depot and wait for Apple to take the hold off your card (less the $120 in parts and fees).
By contrast, independent repair outfits like iFixit will sell you all the tools you need to do your own battery swap – including the battery! for $32. The whole kit fits in a padded envelope:
https://www.ifixit.com/products/iphone-x-replacement-battery
But while Apple was able to make a showy announcement of its repair program and then hide the malicious compliance inside those giant Pelican cases, sabotaging right to repair legislation is a lot harder.
Not that they didn't try. When New York State passed the first general electronics right-to-repair bill in the country, someone convinced New York Governor Kathy Hochul to neuter it with last-minute modifications:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/weakened-right-to-repair-bill-is-signed-into-law-by-new-yorks-governor/
But that kind of trick only works once. When California's right to repair bill was introduced, it was clear that it was gonna pass. Rather than get run over by that train, Apple got on board, supporting the legislation, which passed unanimously:
https://www.ifixit.com/News/79902/apples-u-turn-tech-giant-finally-backs-repair-in-california
But Apple got the last laugh. Because while California's bill contains many useful clauses for the independent repair shops that keep your gadgets out of a landfill, it's a state law, and DMCA 1201 is federal. A state law can't simply legalize the conduct federal law prohibits. California's right to repair bill is a banger, but it has a weak spot: parts-pairing, the scourge of repair techs:
https://www.ifixit.com/News/69320/how-parts-pairing-kills-independent-repair
Tumblr media
Every generation of Apple devices does more parts-pairing than the previous one, and the current models are so infested with paired parts as to be effectively unrepairable, except by Apple. It's so bad that iFixit has dropped its repairability score for the iPhone 14 from a 7 ("recommend") to a 4 (do not recommend):
https://www.ifixit.com/News/82493/we-are-retroactively-dropping-the-iphones-repairability-score-en
Parts-pairing is bullshit, and Apple are scum for using it, but they're hardly unique. Parts-pairing is at the core of the fuckery of inkjet printer companies, who use it to fence out third-party ink, so they can charge $9,600/gallon for ink that pennies to make:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/ink-stained-wretches-battle-soul-digital-freedom-taking-place-inside-your-printer
Parts-pairing is also rampant in powered wheelchairs, a heavily monopolized sector whose predatory conduct is jaw-droppingly depraved:
https://uspirgedfund.org/reports/usp/stranded
But if turning phones into e-waste to eke out another billion-dollar stock buyback is indefensible, stranding people with disabilities for months at a time while they await repairs is so obviously wicked that the conscience recoils. That's why it was so great when Colorado passed the nation's first wheelchair right to repair bill last year:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/06/when-drm-comes-your-wheelchair
California actually just passed two right to repair bills; the other one was SB-271, which mirrors Colorado's HB22-1031:
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB271
This is big! It's momentum! It's a start!
But it can't be the end. When Bill Clinton signed DMCA 1201 into law 25 years ago, he loaded a gun and put it on the nation's mantlepiece and now it's Act III and we're all getting sprayed with bullets. Everything from ovens to insulin pumps, thermostats to lightbulbs, has used DMCA 1201 to limit repair, modification and improvement.
Congress needs to rid us of this scourge, to let us bring back all the benefits of interoperability. I explain how this all came to be – and what we should do about it – in my new Verso Books title, The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation.

As urban populations boom, urban agriculture is increasingly looked to as a local food source and a way to help combat inequitable food access. But little is known about how productive urban agriculture is compared to conventional, rural farming. A new study digs in, finding urban gardeners and hydroponics can meet and sometimes exceed the yields of rural farms. “Despite its growing popularity, there’s still quite a lot we don’t know about urban agriculture, like whether the yields are similar to conventional agriculture, or even what crops are commonly grown,” says Florian Payen, an environmental scientist at Lancaster University and lead author of the study, published today in AGU’s journal Earth’s Future. The new study compiles studies on urban agriculture from 53 countries to find out which crops grow well in cities, what growing methods are most effective, and what spaces can be utilized for growing. The researchers find that urban yields for some crops, like cucumbers, tubers and lettuces, are two to four times higher than conventional farming. Many other urban crops studied are produced at similar or higher rates than in rural settings. Cost efficiency remains an open but important question. Most studies on urban agriculture have focused on green spaces, such as private and community gardens, parks and field growing operations. Payen’s work includes “gray” spaces — places in cities that are already built but could be used for growing, such as rooftops and building facades. In both green and gray spaces, the study examines a suite of crops grown in soils versus hydroponics, horizontal versus vertical farming, and natural versus controlled conditions. “Surprisingly, there were few differences between overall yields in indoor spaces and outdoor green spaces, but there were clear differences in the suitability of crop types to different gray spaces,” Payen says. Certain crops like lettuces, kale and broccoli are more naturally suited to be grown vertically in indoor spaces than others. “You can’t exactly stack up apple trees in a five- or ten-layer high growth chamber,” he says, “though we did find one study that managed to grow wheat stacked up like that.” Other crops, like watery vegetables (e.g., tomatoes) and leafy greens, performed well in hydroponic environments. And crops grown in fully controlled environments can be grown throughout the year, allowing harvests to happen more times per year than in open-air environments, which leads to higher annual yields. But scientists will need to keep studying these systems to plan cost-effective agriculture solutions. The finding that urban agriculture can have similar or greater yields to conventional agriculture “is exactly what we have been waiting for in the urban agriculture research community,” says Erica Dorr, an environmental scientist at AgroParisTech who was not involved in the study.

QSMP HALLOWEEN TRANSLATIONS MASTER POST
This post is to help us do a halloween event without everyone necessarily having to speak english! Here are some translations for the phrases Trick or Treat or Happy Halloween, if they exist within the cultural context in other languages, so you can wish someone a happy holiday back in the same language!
French (from @/omglescubes)
Trick or Treat = Des bonbons ou un sort! (litt: sweets or a spell) Happy Halloween = Joyeux Halloween or Bonne fête d'Halloween
Brazilian Portuguese (from @/leolingo and @littleseasalt)
“trick or treat” = "doces ou travessuras" or "gostosuras ou travessuras" “happy Halloween” = feliz dia das bruxas OR just feliz halloween
Hebrew (from @/qdramatrio and @/azure-wing)
Happy Halloween! Option 1 - ליל כל הקדושים שמח! Pronounced "lel kol ha'kdosheem same'ach" (The ch sounds kinda like the French r). This is the translated version Option 2 - האלווין שמח! Pronounced "Halloween same'ach". This is the transliterated version many people use Trick or Treat! This one is a bit tricky(pun not intended) because the tradition simply does not exist here, which means any translation would just that- a translation Option 1 (most used[relatively]) - תעלול או ממתק/ממתק או תעלול! Pronounced "ta'alool o mamtak/mamtak o ta'alul" Option 2 - תעלול או גמול pronounced "ta'alool o gmool" Option 3 - ממתק או ברדק pronounced "mamtak o bardak" (The last two are mainly attempts of translators to make the Hebrew words for "trick" and "treat" rhyme)
Korean, (from @/koreanbibliophilegirl)
No phrase available in Korean I'm afraid, at least nothing that's widespread enough to count. I mean, I suppose you could say: 즐거운 할로윈 보내세요! (Have a nice Halloween!) (We do NOT say this, but if you really want to wish someone happy Halloween, this should be your best bet I think.) Here are some Halloween-related words instead! 할로윈 - Halloween 마녀 (pronounced ma-nyuh)- witch 해골 (hae-gol) - skeleton 좀비 - zombie 뱀파이어 - vampire 미라 (mee-ra) - mummy 해적 (hae-jeok) - pirate 공주 (gong-joo) - princess 사탕 (sa-tang) - candy 호박 (ho-bak) - pumpkin 보름달/초승달 (bo-reum-dal/cho-seung-dal) - full moon/crescent moon 묘지 (myo-ji) - graveyard 무덤 (moo-deom) - grave 거미 (guh-mee) - spider 피 (just pronounce the alphabet P) - blood
Bahasa Malayu and Bahasa Indonesia, (from @/tu-es-gegg)
i mean halloween has no direct translation in my language its just 'selamat halloween' or smth like that same with trick or treat
Polish (from @/dendixia)
trick or treat has been most commonky translated to "cukierek albo psikus" (candy or trick literal translation) and we dont translate Halloween so its a bit awkward so its usually "Wesołego Halloween" (happy halloween)
German (from @/vacillantvoid)
Süßes oder Saures or also Süßes sonst gibt's Saures and uuuh #Frohes/Fröhliches Halloween <- german
Japanese (from @/wondernoise)
In Japanese you usually see トリックオアトリート! (trick or treat) ハッピーハロウィン! (happy Halloween!) both of which are just direct transliterations of English… A direct translation of “trick or treat” in Japanese would be お菓子をくれないといたずらするぞ (lit. "if you don't give me a treat, I'll play a trick on you") but that’s a little less natural.
Welsh, (from @/b1odeuwed)
in welsh it is: calan gaeaf hapus!! it means happy harvests/winters eve trick or treat is : cast neu geiniog (trick or coin)
Spanish (from @/anothera and anonymous)
in Spain we aay “truco o trato” for trick or treat and “feliz halloween” for happy halloween
Can I add to the translation Halloween list in my country we say "Me das una calaverita" (Spanish for Can you give me a Skull) of trick or treat :]
Yiddish (from @/atthebell)
Yiddish doesn't have a translation really of Halloween; you can transliterate it as: האַלאָווין (haloveen) And for trick or treat there are, predictably, far more words for trick than treat in Yiddish, but I'm partial to: כּישעף (kishef), המצאה (hamtsoe), שטוקע (shtuke) And treat: לאַקעטקע (la'ketke) or צוקערקע (tsukerke) So you could say "Happy Halloween" as "פריילעכע האַלאָווין" (freylekhe haloveen) [though below I'll talk about why you don't have to] and phrase "Trick or Treat" as really any combination of the above, though "שטוקע אָדער צוקערקע" (shtuke oder tsukerke) rhymes somewhat and "המצאה אָדער לאַקעטקע" (hamtsoe oder la'ketke" sounds nice to my ears. It would also be perfectly reasonable to use Hebrew for parts of this, particularly the "Happy Halloween" bit, as Yiddish incorporates a lot of Hebrew (for instance, "hamstoe" is Hebrew but has its own meaning in Yiddish). For "Happy Halloween," I would also probably say "האַלאָווין שמח"/"Halloween Sameakh," similar to the above with Hebrew, although you run into the religious issue that Halloween is not a Jewish holiday, so it does sound kind of funny. Vietnamese (from @blocky-tides)
these are rough translations as Vietnam doesn't really celebrates it Happy Halloween - Halloween vui vẻ Halloween - lễ hội ma quỷ (ghost festival) / lễ hội hóa trang (masquerade festival) Trick or Treat - Cho kẹo hay bị sợ (give candy or scared) Candy - Kẹo Jack o' Lantern - Ðèn bí ngô Haunted House - Nhà ma ám Witch - Phù Thủy Mummy - Xác ướp Zombie - Thây ma Black Cat - Con mèo đen Skeleton - Xương người (literally means bone people) Mask - Mặt nạ Cemetery - Nghĩa Trang
Irish, (from @cube-people-fandom)
Halloween is Oiche Shamhna. And to say happy halloween you would say Oiche Shamhna shona duit. Milseáin is sweets, púca (my favourite irish word) is ghost. Witch is cailleach. Oiche Shamhna is like: Ee-ha How-na Oiche Shamhna shona duit: Ee-ha How-na hunna dit Milseáin: mill-shawn Púca: poo-ca Cailleach: kail-yuck (sort of)
Latin, (from anonymous)
i don't know what practical use this would have, but i thought it might be fun to add Latin to the list -- so i've come up with "dolus aut oblectamentum" for "trick or treat" and "felicem vesperam sanctam" for "happy hallowed evening"!
Thai, (from @routeriver)
In Thai happy halloween would be either แฮปปี้ฮาโลวีน or สุขสันต์วันฮาโลวีน Trick or treat is จะหลอกหรือจะเลี้ยง ghost - ผี witch - แม่มด (which is kinda weird bc if you look at the word separately it’s literally mother ant) candy - ขนม haunted house - บ้านผีสิง skeleton- โครงกระดูก
Chinese (from anonymous)
In chinese you’d usually see 万圣节快乐!(in hanyu pinyin it’s pronounced as: wàn shèng jié kuài lè!)

Hi, same anon. I was trying to give further evidence of your point (i.e. that SDV lets you literally become a landlord), not sure if that came through, but never mind that. I'd like to ask about 2). You said:
you and feral hobo running a commune and splitting income STILL isnt communism, its just cojoined small business practice. communism requires socialist state to first exist, and it covers a broad political and economical system.
Okay, yeah. But "no it can't exist because the government isn't socialist" feels a bit boring. What if we tried to meet the game where it's at? Which is "Feelgood escapism where your grandfather leaves you a farm in your will and escape your crushing job at Corporate USAmerica and live on that farm in a little town full of simple hard work and community, a town that is almost, but not quite, outside of the grasping hands of the surrounding system".
We've established that SDV's depiction of this fantasy is not meaningfully anti-capitalist in any way, but is there a way to interpret that concept in a way that is meaningfully anti-capitalist without removing the core of this initial contrast/struggle?
Especially when realism isn't strictly speaking a constraint. If the game can get away with "You can become a millionaire overnight by selling turnips", I don't think "the town somehow exists with a totally different political organisation than the country it's in" is that egregious, because it's in keeping with the way the game's setting is kinda in a bubble.
Even if the answer is "no, of course not", or "sure, but only if we do something like how the farm is in a completely different country and the struggle against Jojo Corp is now the struggle against imperialism", I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. I'm not particularly attached to SDV, my enjoyment of it has never hinged on it being somehow "progressive". It's just the kind of conceptual game design challenge that tickles me.
How would you redesign SDV to be meaningfully anti-capitalist while trying to keep its core concept recognizable? Can it be done at all, even slightly? etc etc.
well i mean, the thing is that a little town cant exactly exist in its own political bubble, since socialism requires a large-scale operation.
well, while typing this i just remembered a pretty wholesome story on a small scale - and ive mentioned it before, vlak u snijegu by mato lovrak, and its such a pity it wasnt translated. it shows socialist ideals on a small scale, in a group of kids. ill try to make a summary post when i have time.
idk, personally i dont see a way to make an escapist cozy game anti-capitalist. and tbh, i dont even think its necessary for it to be, as long as it isnt marketed that way! socialism involves collectivism and work (well it is centered around workers isnt it) and i mean... that isnt exactly what we think of when we say "escapism fantasy". in those secret little fantasies we want to be privileged and not deal with injustice or corruption or whatever.
the closest to a socialist fantasy i can get is maljčiki by idoli (the song is a banger btw).
Tumblr media
i mean, i dont know if that makes for like, an actually interesting cozy game. tbh when i am looking for guilty-escapism, i read p reactionary stuff; theyre just fantasies, after all. its nice to imagine myself as a noble lady from 18th century getting courted by 5 different rich men or whatever. i just think its important to realize the difference between fantasy and reality.
i mean, theres a reason were talking abt sdv here and not harvest moon. harvest moon was never marketed as anti-capitalist, its just a silly game of owning a farm and then like the goddess makes a girl fall in love with you blabla. nobodys exactly going around and saying how anticapitalistic it is.

Happy WBW!
A silly question from a sleepy me: How should I go about spending a night outdoors in Valloroth? E.g. while travelling on foot. What sort of equipment do I need and what dangers, if any, can I expect?
hi Sam! happy WBW!
ohh man. i should know the answer to this off the top of my head given how much roaming around on the road in Valloroth Lucian and the gang do but i. do not.
Honestly in Invereid, where most of the main story in the first book is set, I didn’t put that many outdoor dangers. It’s a pretty temperate place in late spring/early summer, and I didn’t give Invereid many monsters roaming around. Would’ve made the place too crowded :p
In Invereid in summer you can camp pretty safely in a lot of places with Basic D&D Camp Gear. There probably are wild animals, but there aren’t that many that are huge threats, at least not that I’ve developed yet. One fun thing I do have developed is barometz, which are based on the vegetable lamb myth, only in Valloroth they are literally vegetable lambs:
A barometz sprouts, the plant growing a large gourd atop its thick stem until eventually it splits and the lamb emerges. The lamb remains attached via a stem-like umbilical cord and generally lives for a week or so before starting to age or rot. If left attached to the plant, a barometz will rot away to sludge within two weeks of emerging. If removed from the umbilical cord it can continue to live for only a few days before dying. Barometz grow quickly and have short lifecycles. However, since they grow all year round, they make a perfect crop as they can be harvested repeatedly throughout the year.
They’re originally from Boudobrivvin and are an imported crop that took really well in Invereid, and are often found growing wild, and make the perfect food for travellers. The meat is very similar to flesh and blood sheep, so that’s free lamb chops every night if you want them.
As for other places, I have no idea as of yet. Mohaade - the parts of Mohaade Vren and Aliyne are from - are hot, dry desert regions, and I haven’t done my research into camping/travelling those yet, since no-one’s doing that in book one. You’d definitely need plenty of water, though. Oh, and Mohaade has basilisks:
A small and extremely venemous snake, whose venom is capable of paralysing instantly. Commonly found being thrown out of Mohaade households where they have crept in during the night to sleep. Basilisks have a fearsome reputation outside of Mohaade—within the country they are a common nuisance. Their venom causes instant paralysis, but they are very small and quite stupid. A typical basilisk bite lasts no more than a few minutes. Basilisks are typically reddish-brown in colour, with upper scales of dull maroon almost like dried blood, and a lighter, sandy-coloured underbelly. They have distinctive bright yellow eyes. Their heads appear oversized to their bodies.
So you have to remember to check your boots and such for those every morning.

Any suggestions for books that have a cozy fall feel to them? I'm trying to read my way to cooler weather :P
I sympathize with this endeavor! I have a double confession to make, though. 1) I am never sure what people on Tumblr mean when they say "cozy." 2) Even though I am fairly certain what "cozy" means when applied to subgenres of light fiction, this is not what I seek when I turn to seasonal fall reading. What I am usually looking for in autumnal fiction is some combination of:
death and decay are inevitable; they can also be beautiful
autumn is a time simultaneously of hope and of reckoning with that hope's disappointment
the academic calendar and academic communities (see also above, tbh)
With, um, all that in mind... some recommendations.
Gaudy Night, Dorothy L. Sayers. "Let us go now, and have the truth at all hazards" and also "epic actions are all fought by the rearguard" and "if it ever occurs to people to value the honor of the mind equally with the honor of the body, we shall get a social revolution of a quite unparalleled sort."
Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh (for its gorgeous descriptions of all seasons, and also everything else)
Embers, Sándor Márai (the end of a life and the end of an empire... but maybe not the end of love)
On the Edge of Reason, Miroslav Krleža (I'm pretty sure this opens in September; it is beautiful and poignant and savage)
Lolly Willowes, Sylvia Townsend Warner (this actually might come quite close to what you are looking for; this is a lovely and tender and melancholy and hopeful book)
A Small Town in Germany, John Le Carré (small town, large stakes, and Le Carré's customary insight and humor)
Radetzkymarsch, Joseph Roth (this is another end-of-empire one)
Georgics and Eclogues, Virgil (his birthday is in October! lots of lovely harvest poetry and also poetry about destructive love.)
Summer in the Country, Edith Templeton (summer must end, empire must end, deceptions... may or may not)
The Last September, Elizabeth Bowen (the last because in the autumn of 1920, in County Cork, old certainties and old loyalties are about to go up in flames.)
The Salzburg Connection, Helen MacInnes (not only is this that too-rare thing, an espionage novel written by a woman, but the thing I remember best about it is the male protagonist's quotation of/meditation on Rilke's "Herbsttag.")
The Dig, John Preston (this takes place, of course, over a summer, from May to September. But this is 1939, so September is always, always on the horizon. I did not particularly like the beautiful film as an adaptation, but I want a motivational poster of Ralph Fiennes saying "We all fail! every day!")
I hope that at least some of these may be interesting! I also always think Ellis Peters does a lovely job of evoking seasons in her Cadfael novels, and you could do worse than going through and reading the autumnal ones.

Empires’ Headcanons! (I deisided this will chronicalized all my headcanons) ;P
- The Ocean Queen was adopted by Mezalean nobility, and was the primary architect of the Ocean Empire, as she felt drawn to the Ocean and Seas..
- The Codfather was founded by the Cod Council, and was raised by them..
- Lady Katherine is originally from a highly respected family that lived in Gilded Helianthia..
- The part of Gilded Helianthia where Pearl rule was a city-state..
- Count fWhip and Wizard Gem are dragon-hybrids..
- Lord Sausage and Pearl are cousins..
- Katherine and Jimmy are cousins, due to their surnames being implied to be hyphenated, Elizabeth-”Gaming” and Solidarity-”Gaming”..
- Sausage and Shelby are haft-siblings, I just like their dynamic..
- Shelby and Pirate Joe are cousins as well..
- “Sausage” is his surname, as his character full name is “Mythical J. Sausage”.. (Basically he prefer to be called by his surname rather then his first name..)
- On the topic of surname, in goblins culture, they do not have legal surname, and are often differentiated by their occupation or status..
- Pearl is asexual aromantic..
- Jimmy is asexual..
- Sausage is aromantic, and Katherine is on the aromantic spectrum..
- Some of the gods Joel forgot about are Aeor, and Exor, as well as the Ocean Queen and the Codfather.. and obviously Pearl, who he remembers as “Peril”..
- Joel and Pearl are both mortals who ascended to godhood..
- The Copper King, Pixl was also a god, but never started out as a mortal, and his often seen as the God of Life and Resurrection, a foil to Pearl if you will.. (This can serve symbolism like, Pearl who lived in a fertile forest is the Goddess of Death, while Pixl living in a dry dessert is the God of Life, something something yin and yang..)
- The religion that worship Pearl is the main religion of the Empires’ World.. However she is seen differently depending on the Empire or Kingdom you in.. Offen seen as the Goddess of Harvest, Death and War or Combat..
- The Ocean Queen is seen as the Goddess of the Sea, while the Codfather is considered God of Swamps, Rivers and Streams, though they’re are often seen as a pair..
- Joel is seen as a God of Thunder, Lightning and Hurricanes or the God of Storytelling.. (Lore basically..)
- Gods are normally over 20ft with Joel being the only exception, as Queen Lizzie and the Codfather doesn't count, being demigods, and even being taller then other demigods, being sea creatures as well..
- When the other gods was still around they would shapeshift to Joel’s height or shorter to make him feel better, this combine with his canon bad memory, is why he have a false imagine of being average height, or taller then average..
- Hermes came to life with the mind and body of a 8-9 year old child..
- Hermes is semi-mute..
- Hermes started off as a shulker so they can shoot shulker bullets..
- The Empire Pixl is restoring was first constructed after the rapture, mainly by people of Gilded Helianthia and Mythland, but serve as a safe place for any citizen who Empire was destroyed..
- Lady Katherine help construct and was the first queen, of GlimmerGrove..
- Only non-human that are aloud in GlimmerGrove are fairies and anthropomorphic animals, even tho, the people are wary of them. Magic Users have take an oath, and promise not to use magic in the confined of the Kingdom, as they believe a witch or wizard might had somehing to do with the Queen having a “curse” baby..
- Lizzie is very keen on learning, and is very knowledgeable on history, mainly of the Ocean Empire, Codlands, and Lost Empire, being the citizen mainly descended from their..
- Lizzie wear crutches..
- Critter City is a city-state..
- Animalia is a communist country..
- GilmmerGrove have colonies..
- Katherine was raise to whole a racial bias against non-human.. Katherine herself had thought past this as she been isolated by her own kingdom for being “curse.” But still whole prejudices on other species..
- After meeting Katherine, Shelby started working out, trying to impress her..
- Not acknowledging the Ancient Capital.. Stratos and GilmmerGrove are the oldest standing Empires, with Stratos being the oldest..
- Not acknowledging False’s Empire, and Olipoligo, the youngest Empires are Animalia, Eversea, and the Evermoore, Animalia being less then 100 years old, with Father Floof still being alive, and Eversea and the Evermoore only just being built..
- Gem and fWhip is autism spec. while fWhip also have Adhd along with Shelby, with Shelby having more of the attention aspect and fWhip with more of the hyperactivity..
- Pixl is originally from Tumble Town..
- Everyone who was on Alsmp exist in the Empires’ Universe..
- Seapeekay reside in Animalia..
- Meghan and Mika goes to the Shelby’s Witch Academy..
- Lauren reside in Chromia..
- Gem is an Haft-Elf, a Sun Elf specify, and as Sun Elves are elitist, it can add onto Gem trying to fine her own identity, as well as contribute to why she may have a “Princess” title..
- fWhip, Lizzie, Jimmy and Shelby are the shortest rulers..

Once downstairs he looked out to see one of the most beautiful men he had ever seen. He very much regretted not putting on actual clothes. He ran his fingers through his hair trying to smooth out the unruly curls he knew were there from his shower. He pushed open the door and the man smiled, his bright blue eyes flashing.
“Thank you so much! I thought I was going to be locked out all night!” He said, shaking the rain off of himself as best he could while clutching a soggy pink bakery box. “I’m frozen. Sorry, uh my name is Phil. I live in 301.”

Wind Farms: Harvesting Energy on a Grand Scale
Wind farms represent the vanguard of renewable energy, showcasing how the forces of nature can be harnessed on a grand scale to power our cities, industries, and homes. These sprawling complexes of towering turbines are becoming an increasingly common sight across vast tracts of land and coastal areas around the world, symbolizing the shift towards sustainable energy production.
The Composition of Wind Farms
A wind farm is an assemblage of multiple wind turbines in a single location used for the production of electric power. A large wind farm may consist of several hundred individual wind turbines, and they cover an extended area of hundreds of square miles. The land between the turbines may be used for agricultural or other purposes. For instance, the Gansu Wind Farm in China stretches over 7,965 square miles, an area larger than some countries.
Site Selection: A Crucial Step
The placement of a wind farm is a meticulous process that involves consideration of wind patterns, environmental impact, and proximity to the grid. Optimal sites are usually in areas with steady, strong winds averaging at least 14 miles per hour. According to the Department of Energy (DOE), wind farms on the U.S. coasts and Great Lakes could generate more than twice the amount of electricity used by the entire country. Coastal areas have the advantage of offshore wind farms which can utilize stronger ocean winds and have less visual impact on the community.
The Technology Behind Wind Farms
Wind turbines in these farms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime. Turbines are now smarter, with sensors and automated systems that adjust blade rotation and orientation to the wind for optimal energy capture. Many have a capacity of 2-3 MW each, with some of the largest offshore turbines boasting a capacity of up to 12 MW. The DOE states that a 2 MW wind turbine can supply electricity to over 500 homes.
The Economics of Wind Energy
Wind farms are economically compelling as well. The cost of wind-generated electricity has plummeted over the past decade, with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reporting that onshore wind power is now among the cheapest sources of electricity in many parts of the world. Wind farm projects also create jobs, both in construction and maintenance; the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) reported that the sector employed 1.2 million people worldwide as of 2021.
Impact on the Grid and Energy Markets
Wind farms play a significant role in grid stability and energy markets. As intermittent sources, they are often backed by energy storage systems or integrated into a larger grid infrastructure that can balance supply and demand. Innovative solutions like battery storage or interconnections with other renewable sources are being developed to mitigate wind’s variability. Market-wise, the increased wind energy supply is driving down electricity costs and fostering competition among energy sources.
Environmental and Societal Considerations
While wind farms are a boon to renewable energy, they are not without their challenges. Concerns over wildlife, especially birds and bats, and noise pollution for nearby residents are significant issues that require careful planning and mitigation strategies. Nevertheless, the environmental impact is substantially lower compared to fossil fuel-based power generation. Wind farms also contribute positively to the local communities through land lease payments and increased tax revenues used for schools, roads, and healthcare services.
Looking Forward: The Evolution of Wind Energy
The future of wind farms is intertwined with advancements in technology and energy policy. Continued research in aerodynamics, materials science, and turbine design is poised to make wind energy even more efficient and less expensive. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that by 2040, wind and solar will power more than a third of the world, with wind energy being a significant contributor. Wind farms are not just about generating electricity; they are about reshaping our energy landscape, fostering sustainable development, and creating a blueprint for future energy solutions.

Today we also celebrate our Venerable Father John Theristus. Saint John was an Italian Byzantine monk, called Theristus or “Harvester”. Despite dying almost a century after the Great Schism of 1054, he is notably a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox Church. Saint John’s Calabrian mother was captured Saracens and brought to Palermo, where she gave birth. At the age of 14, he was encouraged by his mother to flee to his native country. He crossed the Strait of Messina in a boat without oars or sail, and reached Monasterace. The inhabitants, seeing him dressed as a Moor, took him to the Bishop, who interrogated him. The boy answered that he was seeking baptism, but the bishop subjected him to harsh trials before giving him his name. Once he grew up, he felt more and more attracted to the life of the monks who lived in the caves around Stylus, fascinated by the example of two Basilian ascetics, Ambrose and Nicholas. After much insistence, despite his young age, he was admitted into the community. He distinguished himself by virtue, so much so that he was later elected abbot. He found in Cursano a treasure that belonged to his family, and following the rule of Saint Basil he distributed it to the poor. Once in June, at harvest time, he went to visit at Monasterace a knight who had provided food for the monastery. He took with him a flask of wine and some bread. When he arrived at two fields, called Marone and Maturavolo, he offered the farmers the bread and wine. A furious storm rose up, risking destruction of the harvest, but through John's prayer the storm held off until the wheat be harvested and gathered in sheaves. Thus he helped to miraculously harvest a large crop ahead of destructive weather, saving the locals from starvation. This and other episodes testifying to the help given to the farmers, earned him the nickname of Therìstis, that is "reaper". The owner of the fields, struck by the incident, donated them to the monastery. The monastery of Saint John Theristus is the only operating Eastern Orthodox Monastery in Italy. May he intercede for us always + Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Theristus (at Calabria, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co-dZiNr65M/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

this isn’t really an ask about your characters but the world they’re in. You have things like springlish and summer and autuman and I was wondering about those they mean?
I AM HONORED I would love to answer stuff about the world they live in because I spent literally a whole semester working on it—
Tumblr media
So basically this world is called Continuum! There are 5 countries:
Springland
Summeria
Autumnest
Winterna
Chūtral
And you’d be right to say that each one is based on seasons! Chūtral is the only one that actually goes through all four like our world.
Tumblr media
I had to put down at least 5 rules to follow by in this world. After reading rule 4, you’ll notice there are different languages! This is mainly because of my small nitpick I have with stories that focus on traveling the world and how they… don’t come across any language barriers or other languages in general. Each country has a local language from our world (because I cannot come up with whole languages on my own)
Springland - English
Summeria - Swahili
Autumnest - Spanish
Winterna - Inuktitut
Chūtral - ASL
To get REALLY into it, we can talk about the Higher Beings and the Blessings they brought to each country!
Tumblr media
Starting with the two main Gods of the world — Eumelia (the Goddess of Music and Life) and Rue (the God of Silence and Death). Long ago, the four seasonal countries were going through their darkest times. The Spring was full of sickness and plague; the Summer nothing but arid desert; the Autumn stuck with marshlands and mud; and the Winter having merciless cold. Eumelia grew tired of the suffering, wanting nothing more than joy and celebration for the people. She wanted fun, wanted LIFE! So she blessed four humans, one of each country, with gifts.
Cassindra, healing; pure waters for the Spring
Wian, growth; healthy plants and shade for the Summer
Teresa, stalwart; solid earth for the harvesting Autumn
Abram, warmth; cozy fires for the Winter.
The central island, Chūtral, was created when all four humans, or “Stems” as they were called by Eumelia, got together and shared their gifts. And when they felt they had done all they could, they returned to their lands and gave their blessings for futures to come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s a rough summary of the origins of Continuum!
What’s that? “What about Rue” you said? Haha, not much is known about Him don’t worry about it ;P
I hope this works as an explanation! Feel free to ask more if you want, I always love talking about everything. I sure hope this made sense. Thank you for the question and giving me an excuse to ramble about my creation!

Youger Futhark - 8th~12th Century
The names of the 16 runes of the Younger futhark are recorded in the Icelandic and Norwegian rune poems. The names are:
ᚠ fé ("wealth")
ᚢ úr ("iron"/"rain")
ᚦ Thurs ("thurs", a type of entity, see jötunn)
ᚬ As/Oss ("(a) god")
ᚱ reið ("ride")
ᚴ kaun ("ulcer")
ᚼ hagall ("hail")
ᚾ/ᚿ nauðr ("need")
ᛁ ísa/íss ("ice")
ᛅ/ᛆ ár ("plenty")
ᛋ/ᛌ sól ("Sun", personified as a deity—see Sól (Germanic mythology))
ᛏ/ᛐ Týr ("Týr, a deity")
ᛒ björk/bjarkan/bjarken ("birch")
ᛘ maðr ("man, human")
ᛚ lögr ("sea")
ᛦ yr ("yew")
From comparison with Anglo-Saxon and Gothic letter names, most of these names directly continue the names of the Elder Futhark runes. The exceptions to this are:
• yr which continues the name of the unrelated Eihwaz rune;
• thurs and kaun, in which cases the Old Norse, Anglo-Saxon and Gothic traditions diverge.

Department of Justice. Federal Bureau of Investigation. FBI Annual Report 1970 Fiscal Year. John Edgar Hoover. J 1.14/1:970. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1970. Full text available via HathiTrust.
“Each contingent [of the Venceremos Brigade] reportedly performed manual labor in harvesting sugar cane. During their Cuban stay, the Havana government attempted to indoctrinate Brigade members in revolutionary tactics and propaganda. Members were visited by various revolutionary speakers from communist-controlled countries who praised peace demonstrations in the United States. They were imbued with the idea that they were the vanguard of the revolution in the United States. Movies glorifying the Cuban Revolution were shown. Fidel Castro personally visited with Brigade members and requested another brigade of American students to travel to Cuba in the summer of 1970 to help with the harvest of citrus fruits. In view of the revolutionary backgrounds of some of the Brigade members, they can be reasonably viewed as potential threats to our national security.” p. 22-23
This annual report provides a curated view of FBI activities pertaining to crime, civil rights, and domestic and foreign intelligence work in the 1970 fiscal year. It also includes both provocative and stylized photographs depicting crime incidents, FBI employees working onsite or in the field, and FBI campuses.
This source aggregates political public-facing perceptions and narratives put forth by the FBI regarding a variety of topics—including its own image as a state of the art, sleek crime fighting force protecting American citizens from threatening communists, criminals, and people of color. However, it is important to note this is a propagandistic, racist, and fear mongering tool that has been used to manufacture consent within the government and larger public for expanding intelligence agencies’ budgets and powers. Its findings should be considered with a degree of skepticism. The report employs quantitative data and staged or selective photos to obscure the FBI’s overreach, civil rights and privacy violations, and violence against politically left organizations—especially those comprised of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color—working to address historic and contemporary US systemic oppression, white supremacy, colonialism, and imperialism.
