A Breakdown of all the Overwatch Anniversary events so far.

I'm in the mood to write lengthy paragraphs examining OW2 today, so let's go for it.

Just to clarify, my first Anniversary event was 2018, so I have just a wee bit of experience playing these events. Unfortunately, I didn't have the pleasant experience of playing the first anniversary event in 2017.

But, it's as good as any place to start, so what exactly did we get in the 2017 anniversary event.

Three new area maps were added, which I'm sure most of you are familiar with. They were Castillo, Black Forest, and Necropolis.

Not only that, but NINE FREE legendary skins were added during the limited time event, that anybody could pick up through loot boxes.

Not just that though, there were over a hundred unlockable items also released during that limited time. Ranging from skins that were lower than legendary, to player icons, to sprays, to voice lines, to emotes, highlight intros, and victory poses.

The 2017 Anniversary event was also the event that introduced dance emotes, which I'm fairly sure you just have to plainly buy no, but don't quote me on that.

WELL

Moving onto 2018

A new death map was released on the 2018 Anniversary event called Petra. Honestly, it blows my mind that Petra came out five years ago now. I remember logging on, and loading up deathmatch and getting lost out of my mind on this new map.

They released 8 legendary skins

and 3 epic skins

Including Lightning Tracer. Man, I remember just how much people hated this skin, claimed it was the ugliest skin ever made.

Personally, I think there are more than a handful that can rival it nowadays.

The 2018 event also introduced being able to buy past event items for all the events, not just anniversary.

Now that I've summarised all the wonderful gifts 2018 gave us, let's hurry on over to 2019.

This year, unfortunately, they did not release any new maps, (that doesn't mean they didn't realise new maps during the year, they just didn't release maps during the anniversary event).

But, they introduced another reel of awesome legendary skins. Except, there was only 6 this year.

Don't get me wrong. I love almost (egg head Pharah is the exception) and I physically screamed when I pulled Academy D. Va.

But, the delice shows when you compare things side by side.

No new map, and 3 fewer legendary skins.

Here are the epic skins as well, nothing special really though what can you say really.

Although, let me put it out there. I am not complaining. I got to play and earn all these skins for free and it was an absolute privilege that I did. I'm just pointing out the differences as the events progress.

2019 was also the first year to introduce legendary loot boxes for logging in. It was free and guaranteed one or more legendary. I'll just put it out there now, I absolutely adored these loot boxes. They were always the highlight of my game time when one came sliding quietly into my loot box tab.

Next up, 2020.

Now, looking at all of these event trailers together, I've released Blizzard made a very particular choice when displaying the legendary skins this year. Notice in the previous years they're usually grouped together and displayed like that? Well, not this year, because there's only 5 new legendary skins.

By displaying each skin induvial and using a highlight intro, it gives the impression there are just as many skins as usual. Very clever Blizzard, I'll give you that.

So far, we've gone from 11 legendary skins in 2017, to 5 in 2020. That number fell dramatically quickly.

2020 was also the first year to introduce the weekly challenges that became ever present in OW1 events.

None of them are really anything special. I remember being fond of the Widow one because of the gold highlights, but I also disliked the Sigma and the McCree ones because their eyes were covered.

Not much else to say really about 2019, the legendries are classics and it was the first anniversary event to use the weekly challenges, but that's it really.

2021 is where I really start to get pissed of at Blizzard.

Remember how I said before that showing of each skin specifically in their highlight intro was a cheap way of making it look like there's more content than there actually is? Well, it get's worse. At least in 2019 they specified that these were new skins.

In 2021, they just roll out the dance cutscene and introduce the new skins without saying they're introducing them, and combining skins from old events into the background. Maybe because it's late when I'm writing this, or maybe because I'm so used to seeing these skins in game, but I had to actually google a list of what skins came out in 2021 because I couldn't figure out the new ones from the old ones.

Anyways, I figured out which are the new ones, and here are your... five skins.

I won't lie. I'm not really a big a fan off... any of these. I suppose Funky Baptiste would be the best, but personally, the quality of the skins declined so dramatically. You can sort of already see it happening in 2019, but I don't think the delice is too noticeable until 2021.

But maybe that's just my personal preference.

These were the weekly challenges, and honestly, I love Tux Hammy. It's just so classically cute. The vibrant Echo is definitly a look too, just maybe not mine.

This is the bit where it gets a bit... trickier.

Old art from 2019 of Mercy (Overwatch)! I adored this game to death and Mercy was my girl!

Once upon a time I wanted to draw chibis of all of her skins and make them stickers or something. This was my first time really trying to figure out how to draw chibis, and it was rough, but I learned a lot from the experience.

My favorites were always Combat Medic, Doctor Ziegler, Pink, Atlantic, and Royal Knight, with a huge soft spot for Imp, Sugar Plum Fairy, Dragoon, and her OW2 Classic! Her Lifeguard skin is cute too, though I haven't really been connected to OW2, unfortunately.

I'll never forget all the hours I spent in Mystery Heroes and those times I braved Competitive to try grinding the ladder.

Just thought I’d start a discussion, maybe even talk about what you guys want to see for these heroes and those that we haven’t seen yet. It was announced that all heroes would be getting a re-design, so I’m not saying that these heroes won’t get them at all. That way it makes sense for the lore since they’re literally re-working her in and out of the game. Torbjorn is among the lower-picked heroes in Overwatch, and many players are hoping he. Plus it doesn’t make a whole load of sense for her to have a re-design in the story… unless she becomes a support in OW2. Overwatch 2’s Roadhog Redesign Has Been Quietly Revealed By Richard Warren Published While Sojourn has been the focus of Overwatch 2’s latest trailers, eagle-eyed fans have pointed out. The latest reveal is the redesign of Torbjorn, the game's turret-reliant Swedish hero, for Overwatch 2. Would they?Įcho - I mean, why? Echo is the latest hero, it’s not like her design is getting old. I’d say he’s less likely to get one, but I’m sure they wouldn’t leave him out like that. Wouldn’t make a whole load of sense for her to suddenly have a new one a few months later.īaptiste - His design is still pretty new, but in terms of lore, it does make sense for him to have a new outfit. However, it’s possible that not all of these heroes will see their classic looks updated and here’s why.īrigitte - Being brand new to the Overwatch family, she literally joins them in the cinematic short “Zero Hour”. After the news of Overwatch 2 is going Free To Play, I noticed that the trailer had a number of quick and easy to miss images of hero redesigns, like Zarya a. Right after the “Recall” cinematic is when our heroes return for the OW2 short “Zero Hour.”

His biggest update is that he is now wearing one of Torbjorn’s old hats showing the. Bastion has been made anew with a more polished framing and a brighter paintjob. Bastion has gotten a significant rework to his gameplay in Overwatch 2, but not much of a cosmetic change. Alongside the beta announcement, Blizzard revealed some more hero redesigns for Overwatch 2, though they are proving to be divisive. Baptise has seen a pretty significant redesign. The clarification was given in the wake of changes to characters Orisa and Doomfist, neither of whom will debut with their new designs this month. As we all know, the entire roster will have new “Classic” skins for the next game, showing the progression of time from the first game into the next.įunnily enough, the first game literally starts just as the OW2 phase is about to start. With the Overwatch 2 beta set to drop next week, a community manager at Blizzard has taken to the Overwatch community forums to warn eager fans that several hero redesigns will not be ready in time.

Overwatch News: OW2 Beta Update and New Blood Information

Alright, time for some more news!

Overwatch 2 News

There will be a closed PvP Beta beginning in late April. This will be including the 5v5 format, 4 new maps, the new game mode - Push, multiple hero reworks (Orisa, Doomfist, Bastion Sombra), and a new ping system. Here is the link to the tweet which includes the sign up for the closed Beta.

Because of this update and official press release, we have seen multiple new classic skins for OW2. The looks for Brigitte, Hanzo, Sigma, and Zenyatta were revealed. I learned about this from @ overfire_ru on Twitter. I think that my favorite is Zenyatta.

New Blood News

According to Google Books, the next and final issue of New Blood will be featuring D.Va and the MEKA Squad. It will be coming out on March 15th, 2022. I know that I mentioned before that I wouldn't be analyzing New Blood, but I might be reviewing it once issue #5 is released. Here is the cover for the new issue. I am actually really excited for this issue since it will probably show us the beginning of how D.Va ends up joining Overwatch.

For this ask game! This post turned out really really long so I'm putting it beneath the cut for the sake of the mobile users.

Torbjorn (my beloved):

a song that reminds me of them What I've Done by Linkin Park. Something about the more industrial sound and the themes of regret really hits different. If you want my really weird one, When They Come For Me by Linkin Park as well. I can't really explain this one as well. . . I know this song is literally about a rapper's journey but the kinda vibe of working hard to get better and rejecting what people expect you to be? That's what I associate. I'm worried I'm going to be mocked relentlessly for this one, because most people simplify Torb's character down to "haha funny dwarf man" but fail to mention the part where he's fiercely independent and is dealing with a lot on his plate. Okay and finally! Burn It Down by Linkin Park. This one is self explanatory, it gives me big Omnic Crisis vibes and the chorus is almost word-for-word his typical catch phrase.

what they smell like There's a very specific scent that I'll try to describe. There are chemicals used to get gun powder and other gook off of guns, and they have a very astringent, oily scent to them. No matter how many times you wash your hands, the smell always lingers. I imagine it lingers on him too.

an otp Him and his wife!!!

a notp Pretty much any other ship with him. I'm not really a shipper in general and I dislike breaking up canon ships.

favorite platonic/familial relationships Brigitte- I like to think he's a good dad. I like their relationship a lot, where they're obviously very close but he respects her enough to let her go her own way with things. I like the themes of legacy that surround them, the almost love-hate relationship Torbjorn has with her becoming an engineer like him, the almost love-hate relationship Brigitte has for joining an industry that already has her father's name plastered all over it. It's fascinating. Reinhardt- bubbly optimistic loud man is best friends with the grumpy pessimistic quieter man? A character dynamic made in heaven. Bastion- I thought I had already made a post where I outlined my thoughts on Torbjorn and Bastion, but I can't seem to find it. In short, not only are they the "cute dad robot child" combo, but Bastion also represents so much for Torb. Bastion is a walking reminder of the Crisis that he helped cause- the violence, the trauma, and most importantly, the legacy. Bastion is Torbjorn's redemption: if the most destructive robot he ever built can choose non-violence then maybe the Omnics can be a force of good after all. He hates Bastion but he needs them. And Bastion, looking for their own redemption and purpose, needs him too.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with Literally everything to do with the "haha funny dwarf man" side of the fanbase. I guarantee you, if Torbjorn was a normal height and typically attractive man he'd be one of the most beloved characters in the fandom but because he's short he's a joke. It makes me so mad!!

the position they sleep in Flat on his back, all sprawled out. Alternatively, I think he likes being the big spoon with his wife.

a crossover au i’d love to see them in Probably Transformers Prime. He'd be best freaking buds with Ratchet!

my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn My favorite skin? Honestly, his classic skin is extremely iconic. . . but if I had to pick another it'd be Santaclad. It's literally flawless. Now for Reinhardt:

a song that reminds me of them Whenever I hear Reinhardt's name I immediately think of Sabaton. The entire band embodies his whole vibe- epic power metal telling and embellishing war stories of the past. I know this is stereotypical and often used as a joke pick, but I seriously do associate The Last Stand with him. It's a story from the time frame of the crusaders, although it follows a much more noble group of defenders- just like the Overwatch Crusaders. There's also a lot of overt religiousness in this song and while I don't headcanon Rein as religious, he does believe strongly in faith and the strength of spirit.

what they smell like It would be nice to think that he smells good, but honestly. . . I don't see him using any sort of cologne or anything. Like yeah, he showers, but he's so active that I bet he's always sort of sweaty. He smells very masculine in that sense.

an otp I don't really ship him with anyone because I headcanon him as aro/ace.

a notp I just. . . I don't like shipping him with Ana, purely because I think their platonic relationship is 100x better

favorite platonic/familial relationships Ana- I have a lot of thoughts on this one. . . I feel like these two would be the type to use the phrase "my better half" platonically. There's a contrast between them, yes, with Ana being the quieter and more responsible and Reinhardt more energetic and outspoken, but their differences cover each other's weaknesses. Both care so deeply about the ones they love and would do anything to protect them. Both of them are dealing with the fallout of Overwatch in almost the exact same way as well, and I think it would be good if they met up sometime in canon and coped together- except for the fact that she left him behind to begin with. It's that friendship with that hint of tragedy that really gets me. Brigitte- Platonic mentor/mentee relationship???? Reinhardt being godfather status????? How could you not. How could you not adore them. Bastion- They're not friends. The dev teaser for OW2 made that one very clear. But. . . their interplay is going to be interesting as hell. It always has been. They're two old soldiers with a sizable and frankly quite understandable chip on their shoulder. Will they reconcile, will they heal? There's a part of Rein (and Bastion as well) that wishes to befriend everyone he meets. Will it be able to overcome the trauma between them?

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with This is fanon but instead canon but- some of Michael Chu's short stories imply that Ana and Jack don't like Reinhardt and that is. Not Correct. They're all friends because I said so.

the position they sleep in I think he sleeps on his side or his stomach, but never on his back. I also imagine he cuddles- be it a person or a pillow.

a crossover au i’d love to see them in Knight Rider, simply because he adores David Hasslehoff so much.

my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn I'm an absolute sucker for power armor, and Reinhardt's classic crusader armor is peak power armor design.

Even if Blizzard did get off the Chinese government's dick right this second or I could somehow only support the people that directly worked on the game while not giving a fraction of a cent to the execs and shareholders, I still dont think i could get excited for OW2. Its not even outrage, it's just dissapointment.

The PVP side of the game will continue to be free for owners of the original and get the same updates, so theres no reason to buy it there

The PVE side only looks like a slight upgrade over the temporary PVE events so theres no real motivation there, especially with a lot of other single player or co-op titles I'm far more interested in for both gameplay and lore releasing in the next year or so. As a free update, sure but for money? It would have to be a significant improvement over the trailers.

The new UI look is slightly improved but that will be coming to owners of the original anyway and is so incredibly minor.

The changes to the default character skins largely look worse in my opinion, even more dissapointing since that will be part of the free update. Especially if they reverted the classic looks to unlocks. Even as someone who is fine with the current cosmetic system (specifically because its cosmetic only and all other updates are free) having to grind/pay to re-unlock the launch looks would be disgusting

And we dont even have a release date or price, which makes the announcement feel even more like a PR smokescreen
