Finale

Definition of finale: the close or termination of something

This pretty much describes Season 4. It’s the end of Outlander and Jamie and Claire as we knew them.

I saw only a shadow of Jamie and Claire’s love when they were saying goodbye after Jamie offered to trade himself for Roger. It was better than other moments this year, but it still paled in comparison to other partings.

I was more deeply moved when they said goodbye to Young Ian. Jamie’s face, with a tear trailing down his cheek, spoke volumes. All the kudos to Sam.

Roger’s beating of Jamie went on way too long. If memory serves, he only hit him once in the book. I’m sure the writers were happy to enhance that scene, because CONFLICT. When given the opportunity, why didn’t Jamie explain that Bree’s maid had assured him that Roger was the one who had raped Bree? It would have explained so much.

The first part of the episode was decent and moved quickly. Unfortunately, Sophie’s acting brought me out of any scene that involved Bree. How ironic to have her running to Roger when, once she threw her arms around him, she looked like she’d rather be anywhere else.

It’s criminal that the writers chose to have Bree give birth without her parents. That scene in the book was one of my favorites, and showing it as written would have made up for a lot of the stupid choices the writers have made.

When Jamie and Claire finally showed up, there was very little emotional involvement. Jamie never even held the baby! Where was the beautiful bonding that took place during and after the birth? He needed to be there as the one Bree most relied on to get her through it. I would love to have seen Jamie telling his stories to distract Bree from her pain, and even Jamie walking Bree around the room “like a horse with colic” would have been fun.

The scenes at the Mohawk village could have been put in last week’s episode to allow us to feel the full measure of Jamie’s joy at helping bring a child of his blood (blood of my blood and bone of my bone) into the world. Jamie deserved that, Claire and Bree deserved that, and we deserved that.

Do the writers hate Jamie’s character so much that they would deny him this one moment? Would it have been too joyful for these writers who want nothing but drama and conflict regardless of what it does to the essence of the characters? Do they not understand why we watch? Obviously not.

I was hoping this episode would end the season on a high note. Instead, the writers have exceeded my worst expectations.
