A bit personal, and also cw/tw for mentions of suicide/suicidal ideation//

I lost my best friend to suicide two years ago. And I can't lie, the themes in OFMD season 2 are hitting hard. Ed is definitely my comfort character, and I love him so much and just want good and nice things for him and want him to be happy.

The sucide themes are... heart-rendingly accurate and make total sense, in ways that I feel certain that someone(s) in the writing team and/or crew have had experiences with this particular thing.

It's bringing up a lot of grief and some unearthed trauma for me, I think. But I think it's also a great opportunity to talk about what you can recognize in friends and loved ones who might be having ideation.

In re-watching episode 2, I noticed some things. The day after the cake topper incident, the morning where Ed tells Frenchie, "I had a very rough night last night, but I think I got all of the poison out of my system," he's cleaning up the cabin. He's cleaned himself up. He's chipper. It's the same morning he gives the gun to Izzy, the same night that he goads the crew into killing him.

And please note, I am not an expert. I'm not a psychologist or therapist, I'm not qualified to dole out real advice. I've just become... intimately familiar with warning signs of suicide the past few years after joining some support groups and being part of discussions and hearing dozens upon dozens of stories from the people left behind. And this is just advice from one human being to others who might need to hear it.

People who have long-term ideation can tend to have a sudden upswing in the day or two immediately preceding death, and it's because they've made the decision to go ahead with it.

My friend had seemed to be getting better. He was chipper, sending photos of things he liked and generally texting/calling people in a cheerful mood. The day it happened, he was on a hike sending me pictures of rabbits and magpies.

If your loved one is going through an incredibly rough patch and has a sudden upswing in mood, if they start cleaning up by giving things away or making big changes, it's time to check in. It's time to find a way to break through to them and see if there's anything at all you can do to stop them from going through with it.

This show brings so much attention to so many things, and they get so many things right. I'm in a kind of a weird mental place right now just because this is bringing up a lot of feelings for me, but it's only because it's so accurate and hits so close to home. If this can help even one person, then it's worth me being weird on the internet about it.

And for anybody out there struggling... just find one thing. Just one thing to keep you here until tomorrow. Just one thing to stay for. Warmth. Food. Intercourse. Anything. Just please stay.

So, first of all we have the official teaser trailer, released on August 30th: TEASER LINK

On September 14th we finally got the full length trailer. I’m assuming we’ve all seen these already: TRAILER LINK

There was a promo vid containing new s2 scenes that some people were getting on their TVs and recording and uploading to twitter. What some people don’t know is that that the official OFMD facebook account recently uploaded the same promo thats actually good quality and not just recording off a tv screen. Anyways if there’s a scene you’ve been seeing but it wasn’t in the trailer or teaser, its probably here: PROMO VID LINK

PHOTOS:

The first batch of season 2 photos we got were from Vanity fair on august 24th, but those photos plus a bunch of others are now available together somewhere i’ll say in a sec. Here is the article that showed us the first look at s2: VANITY FAIR ARTICLE

So, warner bros discovery gave us an *almost* complete collection of currently released photos. This does include the vanity fair photos but most of these you can’t find anywhere else. they say which episode every photo is from and let you download them too which is pretty cool. The site also has some great articles in the media releases section but they’re not that relevant. Go to the images section to see the s2 pics: S2 PHOTO COLLECTION

The final thing I found was the exclusive photo “The Streamr” posted on twitter. In fact there’s this whole thing happening with the OFMD twitter fandom and The Streamr and apparently they’ve posted exclusive photos that aren’t in the Warner Bros collection. Once again I am not actively on twitter so I don’t really know that much. I was only able to find one exclusive image posted by them but if there are any more please let me know. The thing is - Ed was super happy for Stede when people started recognising him, he was supportive and willing to give advice but then take the sideline for Stede to enjoy his moment. There was no regret of their night together, there was no bad feelings towards Stede at all, they had a nice breakfast in bed and then went out for brunch at one of Ed’s favourite spots.

It was only when he spoke to Jackie that Ed realised that even though they were happy at that moment, they seem to want different things for their future.

Instead of talking about it though, Ed reacts by lashing out, he even gets a regretful look on his face before he starts digging in about going slow and calling the night before a mistake like he chose to say those things specifically so Stede would want to fight but all he gets is Stede being reasonable telling him he’s panicking and that they can make the thing between them anything they want it to be (I know we’re hating on Stede for being a giant douchecanoe but he really was being quite reasonable in this fight before they start talking about Ed being a fisherman).

The fish being “whatever” is obviously hurtful to Ed but Stede is still reeling from Everything and even then he still managed to add he just wanted to make Ed feel good implying that basing his entire future on catching one fish is bizarre.

Stede even recognises what just happened as Ed walks away as he incredulously says “you’re just blowing this up” after Ed shouts at him that it’s everything about fishing.

And then… the abandonment kicks in and Stede finally lashes out with “YOU’RE A COWARD”

And Ed kind of is, because it wasn’t about the fishing, it wasn’t about the night they spent together (which was clearly consensual, I swear I question if I’m watching the same show as people with some of the hot takes about ✨that✨scene) it wasn’t even about Stede being famous - not directly.

It was Ed getting in his own head - overthinking the situation, lashing out at Stede with something that he knew Stede would react to and then genuinely getting hurt when Stede reacts. We don’t see his reaction to being called a coward and I’m grateful for that because I don’t think my cold dead heart could take that after Stede’s heartbroken face.

The preview for the last episode gave me hope that although we will no doubt get a cliffhanger - at least Stede and Ed will be together with the potential to sort their shit through.

TL:DR

Two middle aged men with no experience with long term caring relationships sabotage their potential long term caring relationship because they’re scared the other will leave them

Logging off for a while. Not because they killed Izzy. Because of the reaction to it. I'm sorry. But absolutley fuck you if you think djenks is burying gays. Absolutley fuck you if you are calling him homophobic.

Izzy hands story was BEAUTIFUL and complete and gorgeous. Izzy found acceptance and a family and Ed.. he couldn't stop being blackbeard untill this. Piracy doesn't have a place anymore. Izzy was the embodiement of piracy.

His story was wrapped up so well. He was my fav character and I love his story.

Look, you can have your own opinions and be upset but don't you fucking dare spout hate at the cast and crew. This show is so much more to the queer community. I lived my entire teenage and adult hood with NO queer media. Being queerbaited and having no stories to represent how i felt. I waited my whole entire life for this show. So fuck you if you send hate to the cast and crew. Fucking grow up.

Ed and Stede were doomed to break up from the moment Ed asked to take it slow.

This is not placing blame on either of them, so we’re clear. Blame is placed on both sides, but I know how this is going to sound in the beginning. Bear with me.

The second Ed ignored Izzy and went after Stede it was their downfall. Izzy had said to Ed to give Stede space, and that the first kill was a mind fuck, but Ed didn’t listen. Likely because he didn’t want Izzy to try and tell him what to do, maybe even because he didn’t want to think Izzy knew better. But he went after Stede, and Stede likely needed to feel anything other than what he was feeling.

He didn’t have a choice in killing Ned. This can not be a kill them with kindness moment. Stede already proved his way of talking it through can be helpful when he talked down Hellcat Maggie and managed to turn Ned’s crew against him. But in dealing with Ned himself, it had to be death. One, he hurt his crew. I have seen a lot of people point out that he talked down Ed, which he absolutely did, but Ned ordered Stede’s crew tortured. He loves his crew, they are his family, and no one fucks with his family. Then he talked Ed down, calling him low-born among other things. Stede would absolutely not tolerate that shit. And what else was he going to do? What other option did he have? Ed should have known that, should have seen that. He had been a pirate, whether or not he wanted out or not was beside the point, he knew how that world worked.

So we have Stede in a vulnerable state, wanting to feel loved and to give love and not feel like a monster, and there’s Ed knocking on his door. If it had been a crew member, they’d have talked. If it had been Izzy… I think there would still be talking. Ed? Stede waited until he had permission from Ed, but there was absolutely no reason either of them had to go that far.

Stede should have stopped himself. It’s very clearly enthusiastic consent, Ed even starts to lean in after his nod before Stede does. But they had just talked about slow, and then next thing they know their in bed. Both of them deserved a better first time with one another. Yes, it was probably romantic and soft as shit given the song choice and the fireworks and all the lovely imagery, but they deserved better.

Then you have the Republic. Ed made a quick decision to join a fishing boat. He knew Stede wouldn’t join him. He knew that Stede liked being a pirate even before the infamy. He ran.

Stede was cruel in his reaction, calling Ed a coward. Stede isn’t exactly fearless, and he ran from a lot of things, so him shouting that to Ed as he left? Yeaaaah, that was a dick move.

Seriously, there was no way they were going to make it through the season without an actual breakup. Where Ed was all in last season, he’s now very much not. And that’s okay, he has a lot of shit to work out, but he hasn’t told that to Stede. Stede is all in, but he also is all in to being a pirate. Because that’s what he wants but hasn’t made it clear to Ed.

I will be very, very curious how they fix this next episode, and what it would mean for a season 3 set up.
