“Just kidding, darling, the first thing she told me about you was that she could see you balancing me out.”
“It’s more that my crazy and your crazy mesh together pretty good,” Arthur says to the ceiling.
“Isn’t that what balancing each other out means, though?” Eames says, almost rhetorical, and burrows closer to Arthur, folding his legs beneath him and grabbing the remote.
Arthur swallows and tightens his hold on Eames, rolls his head to press his cheek to the top of Eames’, instead, and says, “I guess.”
Pippa’s tiny snores can be heard through the crackling of the baby monitor; Eames is warm and solid glued to Arthur’s side, thumbing the label of his beer bottle and channel surfing mindlessly. And for a moment, Arthur lets himself pretend that this, right here, is what he always wanted, realised.
Or, Arthur, Eames, and Philippa form an unlikely family.
In which they hate each other and love her, until life, as they know it, crumbles all around them and changes everything.
