For a while now I've been wanting to try painting over the Pillars of Creation photo taken by the Webb telescope.
When I was a kid I thought the earlier version looked like a bunch of dragons racing to the sky, and I think the new pic looks even more like it, so, here they are~

For reference, same crop of the photo down here:

Artfight 2023 Collection
This year’s Artfight has come and gone, and it was a pretty active year all things considered. Sent out a lot of attacks, and even got a lot of defenses, especially for Kilua this year. Since a lot of work went into the pieces I did this month, here’s each of the pieces I did for people.
Keep in mind that I was on Team Vampire, so next to the title of the piece, i’ll have a number that corresponds to the person it was for, attributed to near the bottom of the post, and in parentheses, a indicator on which type of piece it was, friendly fire, attack, revenge, etc. Without further ado... here’s what I did this year!
#Piece 1 - 20th Century Boys (Attack) Ft. Clarenze and Liam Signhson
Tumblr media
#Piece 2 - Sweeping Blade of Grass (Attack) Ft. Parsley
Tumblr media
#Piece 3 - Ballin’ (Attack) Ft. Slim Ridland (Ft. Daily Pyoro)
Tumblr media
#Piece 4 - An Unlikely Trio (Attack) Ft. Ivy, Josie, and Wynne
Tumblr media
#Piece 5 - Reaper in the Rain (Revenge) Ft. Drizzle
Tumblr media
#Piece 6 - Salty Vaporwave (Revenge) Ft. Jewel
Tumblr media
#Piece 7 - Hat Trick (Friendly Fire) Ft. Ferris and Mochi
Tumblr media
#Piece 8 - Flower-Tailed Forest Dweller (Attack) Ft. Matcha
Tumblr media
#Piece 9 - Sunflower Chu (Attack) Ft. Poppet (PMD ver.)

#Final Piece - Fluffy Aeromancer Dragon (With a Battleax) Ft. Aero

Last Thoughts of the Event:
This year’s artfight I think was one of my favorites i’ve had so far (and i’ve only been around since 2021), but not without some added anxiety.
Some of that anxiety was expected stuff from artfight, like not being able to hit a couple people because I ran out of time and energy, and also dealing with artist burnout a couple time. But some other stuff was personal life stuff, and well... twitter becoming more and more of a trashfire.
That all being said, this year was also really fun. One of my favorite things to do over an artfight is find some way to improve on or just experiment with my art since I don’t really do “big colored pieces” very often, and this year certainly helped push that a little further. I experiment a lot with shading and backgrounds, and I think in hindsight, things like Pieces 2, 5, 6, 8, and Final ended up being my favorites to look at just because the colors and background all just work.
Some of them also allowed me to think up a couple ideas of scenarios to put the characters in that added to how I went about the piece. Pictures 4 and 7 especially clarify that, considering they depict a scenario or even a potential group dynamic that’s pretty fun to think on.
Though what also was crazy was that I got attacked a lot more than I was expecting to going into this year. Like I expected at least a couple if I was actively participating, but I got hit with... well 7 technically, but one was a mass attack Volt was included in, not directed at me, so 6 officially. It was a neat surprise to keep waking up to a few of them, and a lot of them focused on Kilua, she got a lot of love this year. (dw, Volt got a couple too actually). I’m really happy about that, and I love all the drawings people did, they all capture something about the original designs that I love, while translated into their own styles. Dibnibs in specific went and even added backgrounds to them after the event passed, and they (not just mine but a couple of the others I saw) look awesome.
Whatever the case though, the event went really well. I got quite a few pieces sent my way, and I was able to put out a lot of pieces, and a lot of those pieces I really like how they came out. I was on Team Vampire this year, but I think I can say i’ll win either way because I only was on there because a lot of my mutuals were going werewolf, and I wanted to have opposition. That and, I just like Werewolves more.
If anyone has questions for me about anything related to their art, my dms are open. And with that, thanks for a really fun year to everyone who participated.

The Crystal Glaze Saga (Part 1)
Ceramics. Stoneware. 2023 FALL
Glaze: NR Crystal glaze-Blank Slate (glazy) by Nick
Cone 6 Oxidation
I struggled a lot using this glaze. The swatches turned out so pretty but they wouldn't turn out well. I think I needed to adjust the firing schedule a bit more to match the one listed on Glazy. There was also the problem of the weird clay I was using leading to the brown streaks while firing. My first attempts used a regular schedule that led to little to no crystals forming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It even led to the bottom of a really nice bowl I made exploding or something?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I used a different firing schedule (for crystal glazes specifically) and created this cup. The design was meant to emulate a cracked fermentation pot. The crystals turned out really well for this one! I would have preferred it if the clay was normal or porcelain but it has its own aesthetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried using this firing schedule with some other combination glazes but the glaze just mixed with the other glazes or something and vanished. The first rice bowl has an interesting cracked design in the closeup and vestigial blue streaks. But the cup proceeded to Houdini.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hypothesize I didn't apply the glaze thickly enough or it just doesn't play well with other glazes. Nonetheless, I want to experiment with this glaze more in the future.

A dragon who decides to hoard mint and various types of mint plants (and not knowing that mint has the mushroom’s blessing of inevitability were ever its planted) can go one of two ways.
1: The dragon is absolutely horrified as the mint engulfs and takes over its den. Its gold? Mint. Its gems and goblets? Mint. Its stores of wine? Mint. No matter what they do they can’t get rid of it.
2: The dragon is delightfully ecstatic as the mint engulfs and takes over its den. It’s a self growing hoard. No matter what any adventurers or knights do, they can’t get rid of it.

The Ritualistic Art Of Kerala — Kalamezhuttu
Have you ever wondered why Kerala is known to be God’s own country? Kerala is well-known for it’s delicious food, traditional art forms, and exquisite and unique artworks.
In this blog,Rooftoptakes on a spotlight on the ritualistic art ofKerala- Kalamezhuttu.
Kalamezhuttu is a ritual art form practised in Kerala, where artists create realistic images of various Hindu gods and goddesses. It is a combination of their native languagekalam, which means picture, andezhuthu, meaning drawing.
Tumblr media
History & Tradition Of Kalamezhuttu
The lineage of this artwork has blended harmoniously with Dravidian and Aryan cultures with Hindu mythology. It is a ritual practice that is often performed at temples and at the front and back of houses to welcome the deities within. The religious art form was evident even in the Sanghom Age. As part of the celebration, garlands, flowers, leaves, and oil lamps are placed throughout the sacred place.
Generally, Kalamezhuttu artists are from the communities of Kurups, Theyyampadi Nambiars, Theeyadi Nambiars, and Theeyadi Unnis. Even though their art styles are different, the rituals connected to them are the same. It has strict rules and guidelines, unlike a Rangoli design. The artwork must start from the center and move outward, it cannot be done the other way around. The coloured powders are scattered without the use of any instruments.
One can find thisritualistic artworkgenerally drawn at the temple entrances and royal households. According to tradition, these vibrant artworks welcome gods into the temple.
Symbolism And Importance
Kalamezhuthu symbolises excessive anger and intense emotions. This ritual has three stages that revolve around aspects of religion, aesthetics, and sociality. First, the Kalamezhuttu is drawn, followed by kalam pattu(ritual song), which depicts the mythology associated with the deity. Songs vary from folk to classical in style, depending on the deity being worshipped. As soon as the additional practices are completed, the Kalam Thullal, the artist, erases the kalam artist while performing to traditional drum beats. The ritual is done at the specified auspicious time.
Themes And Stories Related With Kalamezhuttu
The world is the canvas for this creation of art. The artists use five different types of coloured powder that were originally made from natural sources, including black from charcoal, yellow from turmeric, green from leaves, white from rice powder, and red from combining lime and yellow. The Kalamezhuthu’s pattern and design are purely determined by the occasion and not by the artist’s preference.
In Kalamezhuttu, Bhagavati, Bhadrakali, and Ayappa are the most prominent deities. The artists take utmost care to draw the eyes, noses, and ornaments in the vivid drawings of the deities. The art showcases the angry state of the Gods. The artists primarily draw these deities with their weapons to showcase their anger.
International Recognition
The ritualistic Kalamezhuttu art is one of its kind that needs protection from getting extinct. Also, it’s recognised as an Intangible cultural heritage and holds significant value.
UNESCO has set a few guidelines for intangible cultural heritage, and Kalamezhuttu encompasses all kinds of them:
An oral tradition or expression, including a language that showcases the intangible cultural heritage
An art form that involves performance
Observances, rituals, and celebrations.
An understanding of the universe and nature
The art of traditional craftsmanship.
Thus, we must preserve this unique art form in its current state of being performed. It is we who have to keep our cultures and traditions alive for the generations to come.
