Osteoporosis—dubbed the “silent disease”—affects more than a third of all women ages 50 and older and more than 200 million people worldwide. Fractures can lead to disability or even death. Osteoporosis is expected to cost patients and the US health care system more than $25 billion annually by 2025. A new study in Nature Communications links the disease to the presence of Bacterioides vulgatus, one of the most abundant gut bacteria in the human microbiome.

When you realize after getting diagnosed that all the things you’ve been feeling aren’t normal and were never normal and you’ll never be normal.
Then you regret ever knowing you were different because now all you notice is what you’re not, normal.
Normal…? Normal.

Invisible implies unable to be seen
The diagnoses I carry are labeled as such and maybe people can’t imagine, don’t want to imagine but it’s easy to dismiss something you claim is hidden from sight
what I experience is far from unseen
My disease reveals itself in the armor I don for battle each day, compression as a second skin, braces and tapes to hold together tissue and bone frail and bird like
It is visible in the hours spent in waiting rooms, the familiarity of cold, clinical sterility associated with pain
My skin bears the burden of illness, marked with bruises and scarring delicate as aging paper
Punctured daily with medicine intended to heal glass bones but simultaneously eroding my spirit
At times flushing on my face akin to a butterfly’s resting place, red hot wings branded onto flesh
This malady is seen in the repeated fractures and tears, limping and adjusting to find relief
It is identified in my need to sit, the sweat that blossoms when I must stand, the blood pooling in extremities, swelled and discolored
Mostly it is evident in the absence of me, the late night gatherings that happen as I rest, physical activities exceeding what I can give
The pain and exhaustion dragging me back to a point of isolation, one from which I’d escape if I could
The manifestations are intricate but revealed with empathy and the mindful gathering of information
To call my conditions invisible negates the palpable evidence of affliction
Minimizes my experience
And exacerbates my pain

Scientists at Peking University School and Hospital for Stomatology, China, have used deep learning to identify dihydroartemisinin (DHA), an antimalarial drug, as a potential treatment for osteoporosis. DHA was found to maintain the stemness of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are important for bone formation. In mice, DHA treatment was able to reverse osteoporosis-related bone loss. The research published in ACS Central Science suggests that DHA could be a promising new therapeutic agent for osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Bone density is significantly decreased, and the microstructure of the bone is degraded slowly. There is a disruption in the delicate balancing act between the formation and degeneration of bone due to the malfunctioning of osteoblasts. The precursors of these osteoblasts, Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells or BMMSCs, have important roles in osteoporosis. These stem cells steadily proliferate and differentiate into functional osteoblasts, allowing for bone density to be maintained. However, in patients with osteoporosis, these stem cells display a tendency to differentiate into adipocytes instead and have reduced regenerative potential. The current treatments for osteoporosis primarily target the remediation of deficiencies in hormone production as well as bone resorption but cannot target the root cause: the lost stemness and regenerative capacity of the precursor stem cells. However, new deep learning tools can help remedy this shortcoming by targeting the problem at its source.

Here’s some positivity for systems with weak or fragile bones!
Whether your system has osteogenesis imperfecta/brittle bones disease, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, a calcium or vitamin D deficiency, or any other problems or disorders that cause weak, soft, brittle, or fragile bones, this one’s for you!!
We wish for you a future full of health, rest, and healing! We hope those who surround you will treat you with kindness, and that you are able to access the accommodations you need in order to live your best lives.
To those who have to practice extreme caution or avoid doing activities they love due to their weak bones, we want you to know that your heartache is valid and worth expressing! It’s not fair that some folks end up or are born with disabilities that prevent them from achieving their dreams or pursuing their passions. We want to support and uplift you however we can, and encourage you to try and live a full and happy life despite your limitations!
To those who have broken bones more than once in the past and live in fear of breaking another bone in the future, our heart and thoughts go out to you! Breaking or fracturing a bone can be a terrifying, incredibly painful experience. If you are currently healing from a broken bone, we wish you a swift, painless recovery! Please don’t push yourself, and try to take it easy!
To those who are unable to afford treatment for their weak bones, we genuinely feel for you! It is becoming more and more expensive to be disabled, and working with insurance and hospital billing departments is often a nightmare. We hope that your situation will change in the future, and that soon you will be able to access the care you need in order to take care of yourself properly!
To those whose system formed due to trauma from their weak bones, be it from breaks or fractures, facing harassment and bullying, or dealing with medical trauma/abuse, we want you to know that yes, your trauma is valid and it was enough. No one should have to go through what you’ve been through, and you deserve to recover with plenty of love, self-compassion, and self-acceptance along the way!
This disability pride month, remember that if you have weak or fragile bones, you are a welcome, integral, and cherished part of the disabled community! You are allowed to take up space here, and are encouraged to be vocal about your experiences and what you need in order to live your best lives! Thank you so much for reading, and have an absolutely stellar day!

Why does every article about having osteoporosis/osteopenia have to mention how it’s mostly just older people who struggle with it. I’m 22 for fucks sake. I have nobody my age who has any idea what it feels like to live life scared to misstep and fall, because if I fall I will fracture more bones.

A team of Florida International University (FIU) drug development scientists has found a possible new way to counteract the effects of the disease that turns bones into honeycomb-like structures—so fragile even a cough can cause a fracture or break. The discovery, recently published in Communications Biology, is the first step toward cheaper, effective, easy-to-take treatments for osteoporosis and other diseases associated with bone loss.
Currently available drugs only stop bone loss and require expensive daily injections. Researchers from FIU's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine—along with a collaborative team from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences—identified a method that can be taken orally and helps bone-producing cells make more bone.

Got off my period suppressant because I have osteopenia so now 2 years of suppressed periods, endometriosis and the tidal wave of gender fuckery I had shoved into a box labeled “don’t even think about it” are all fighting and I’m just laying in a heap on the couch.

Dudettes and also dudes:
please, I beg you, 🙏🏼 develop strong bones! And balance! A friend fell for no good reason and shattered her leg in a million pieces. For a second time, the second leg, just when the first one started to heal from the previous fall. She has a few pounds of hardware in that leg. She’s bedridden AGAIN, which will weaken her muscles and make her more prone to falling. It’s fucking heartbreaking, and it happens all the time among my age group. 😫
No, drinking milk is NOT preventing osteoporosis.
Start exercising in whichever way you can, and lifting, whatever you can, and it will NOT “make you look masculine.” Get to it please 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 advanced osteoporosis is horrible
