the shroud family curse and its implications for intimacy

I was thinking about what the Shroud parents must look like under their helmets and then I started wondering how they met and fell in love 🤔 While wondering about that, I came to the realization that Mr. and Mrs. Shroud's romance must have been a complicated one.

***Spoilers for books 6 and 7 of the main story below the cut!!***

Idia’s grandmother, Aidne, was the previous director of STYX. She was succeeded by her son (Idia’s father), which implies that the Shroud blood and the curse that comes with it are from the paternal side of the family. Idia’s mom, then, is the one who married into the family. (It’s not clear at this point if those that marry into the Shroud family are also magically afflicted with the same condition, but for the purposes of this post whether it is or not isn’t relevant as my point will still stand either way.)

The Shroud curse quickly burns away any blot the individual has in their body without the typical means of recovery (ie rest and self-care). If there is no blot to incinerate then the curse will turn to consuming the magical energy of the individual themselves, which could pose a threat to their wellbeing and even their life. Because of this condition, ancestors to the Shroud family threw themselves into research on blot in STYX. This would ensure that Shroud members were always around blot that could be burned in the place of their own energy, and provided a sense of false hope for them. They believed that if they worked hard enough, they may be able to find a cure for their curse--but over time, that belief waned, and instead it seems they are all now resigned to their fate and don't try to defy it. We see this is true of the latest generation of Shrouds, as Idia was groomed to become the next director of STYX from a young age even when he disliked the idea and how his responsibilities restricted his freedom. In fact, the Shrouds in general are described as being gloomy people, and this is possibly the result of the hopeless feelings they have about their curse.

A secondary consequence of the curse is that it socially isolates members of the Shroud family from society. Idia is somewhat of a special case since we also have to consider the mental and emotional anguish he experienced following his involvement in Ortho's death. However, even disregarding this horrific tragedy, it can be inferred that the Shrouds are forced into positions which make them more alone than others. For one, their jobs seem to be very demanding and literally physically keeps them away from others (besides colleagues) since the headquarters are located in bottom of the sea. In Idia's post-OB flashback, we get dialogue which implies that he is not allowed outside very often--something which we can attribute to his being the heir to STYX. This may imply that previous Shrouds experienced similar childhoods, and this is just a continuation of the cycle. (I do want to point out here that Idia says his family used to go out to various places together when Ortho was still alive, so it's not a strict requirement that the Shrouds have zero outside interaction. They obviously do go outside the lab, but we cannot say for sure how frequently.)

More importantly, there is also an emotional and psychological component to isolation. You do not need to actually be alone in a room to be considered "isolated" from others. You could, in fact, be in a room full of people and still feel "isolated" because you haven't made any meaningful connection with them. This is what I think it must feel like to be a Shroud out in the world. You may technically be considered a part of the population, but you still don't quite fit in. For example, Idia has previously expressed worries that people will stare at his hair and recognize him as a Shroud, then ridicule his appearance and attitude. Indeed, the gloomy presence that the Shrouds give off seems to be a major deterrent for others to interact with THEM. All that time spent in physical isolation must have also had an impact on the Shrouds' ability to socialize. Idia is a strong example of this; he is an avid gamer and feels comfortable with taunting people via a screen. His face-to-face manner of speaking, meanwhile, can be incendiary and often rubs his classmates the wrong way. His father is not the exact same as him, but Mr. Shroud seems to have his own issues communicating affection and tends to describe things in a serious manner or in terms of work. Thinking about the way the curse is constructed too, there is a built-in fear that the Shrouds can never truly form long-lasting relationships with others, nor completely reveal their true selves to friends. Idia exposits as much in book 6. When Ortho tries to get his big brother to be friends with the OB boys, Idia dismisses the idea and says it won't matter in the end because they will be "sent down the river" and have their memories of those fun times completely purged. This illustrates a defeatist mindset which may be pervasive in all or most of the Shroud family: if this is going to be the fate of my loved ones, why bother getting close to anyone at all? It will just be more painful for us in the end.

SO LIKE. What was Mr. Shroud probably going through when he was seeing his then-girlfriend????? ??? ??? ??? ? ? ??? ? ?? He was probably so frustrated that he couldn't tell her anything about who he really was, and probably even more frightened that if he did ever tell the truth, he might lose her forever (via River Lethe memory wipe). And even if she still accepts him for it, then what??? Then she has to join the Shroud family, and that's basically damning her to the same mopey life he has, researching blot in the middle of nowhere until they're nothing but bones. Imagine how intense that guilt must be, knowing that you (yes, YOU) are responsible for "dragging down" your beloved into the same miserable circumstances that you're in. Not only that, but surely then you'd also have to tell your S/O that any children you conceive together will have the exact same destiny in STYX. It's not just Mr. Shroud either, it must be generations of Shrouds going through this same thing.

But, but, but!! In spite of his fear, Mrs. Shroud must have said yes because she truly loves him with all her heart… Their relationship must be built on such a strong foundation of trust and loyalty 😭 (From here, this is all speculation/headcanon/me rotting about the Hades-and-Persephone-esque romance I picture Idia's parents having. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.) I don't think that Mr. Shroud would be the one to initiate or to be affectionate. At most, maybe he had a shy sort of crush on her. More likely it was Mrs. Shroud that first expressed a romantic interest and passionately pursued him. And then maybe over time his feelings blossomed but he was still too afraid to put this massive burden on her shoulders, knowing the responsibility he bears as the future director of STYX... BUT HE HAS ALSO BECOME TOO ATTACHED TO HER TO CUT HER OUT OF HIS LIFE COMEPLETELY... Her very presence is screwing with his usual sense of cool, calculated logic 💀

AND WHAT ABOUT "THE TALK" THEY'D HAVE TO HAVE TO FULLY DISCLOSE EVERYTHING???? HOW MUCH MR. SHROUD MUST'VE BEEN SWEATING WAITING FOR HER ANSWER????? ?? ?? ? ? ? Oh, Sevens. Now I've done it. Here comes the moment where he gets dumped and his mom sends in a whole squadron of men to kidnap his girlfriend and clean her brain up. But NO 😭 Instead Mrs. Shroud just clasps his hands and insists that they should get married so he'll never have to wallow in those miserable thoughts all alone... He's confused and keeps begging her to reconsider, because this decision will inevitably throw her entire life off course.

"Are you sure about this? If you say yes to me, your fate will be sealed. You can never turn back. Your life will be sworn to the Isle of Woe." "Yup, I've never been more sure of anything in my whole life! Let's burn in the Underworld together, darling <3"

She provides a response that’s so easy and devil-may-care that he doesn’t know what to say back, so he just quietly laughs… and slowly those quiet laughs morph into quiet sobs… (like how flashback!Idia transitioned from laughing to crying when he was bragging about how indestructible the “new” Ortho is 😈 LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON—)

Idia drops this line during his extended post-OB flashback: "So it's romantic when a hero rescues his ladylove from the Underworld, but when I do the same for my brother it's wrong?" WHAT IF THAT WAS TRUE, BUT WITH THE GENDER ROLES REVERSED, FOR HIS PARENTS???? ?? ? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? Mrs. Shroud willing to literally throw herself into the Underworld to "save" Mr. Shroud... like how Persephone was willing to stay there with Hades... 🙃 I'LL EAT THAT SHIT UP, JUST DROP THE "HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER" UPDATE OF TWST, DEVS..... . . . .. ..... . . .. . .. . . . . . . .. .... . . .. . . .... . . .. . . . .

Idia Shroud: 

Idia felt dread, so heavy that it’s like the entire world was just dropped on his shoulders. Is it happening again? A repeat of the Ortho incident as some sort of cosmic karma? He’s already a constant homebody but he’s even more likely to lock himself away, like a princess in those fairy tales who’s always guarded by a vicious dragon. He doesn’t know how to articulate his pain or grief at hurting someone he loved dearly but you can be assured that he won’t take a chance like that again.

Kalim Al-Asim: 

Kalim is completely heartbroken as he had started off only wanting to show his child a cool trick he could do with his magic. He regretted it immediately, admitting to fault and learning another valuable life lesson: money really couldn’t make everything okay. He attended to them himself during their recovery, wanting them to feel how truly sorry he was. Not that he was a strict parent before, but he showered them in gifts, afraid of them potentially harboring hatred in their heart for him (something he could definitely never recover from).

Leona Kingscholar: 

Leona is agitated with himself for accidentally hurting his own child but he doesn’t offer words of apology, instead handing them off to you and closing himself off the rest of the day. You think it’s selfish of him to do so but you know that he’s always had a hard time dealing with his feelings, especially when it came to admitting he was in the wrong, so you did your best to let your child know it wasn’t their fault (while taking care of any leftover wounds incident). When Leona finally interacts with them again you’re proud to hear a very quiet apology slip out of his mouth, a hand placed on your child’s head as he stated they would both have to be more careful from that point on. 

Malleus Draconia: 

Accidents happen, and Malleus himself had been put into many dangerous situation when he was a baby. It was just a thing that fae children happened to be attracted to and he wasn’t the least bit surprised when the same happened to your child. He’s not happy that it was at his hands but he knew he had been holding back anyway, the damage could be far worse than what it was. He’s more afraid of dealing with you in the aftermath as he was sure he’d hear an earful but you just seemed relieved that your child wasn’t seriously injured, holding them close while they told you about all the cool things Malleus could do with magic. 

Riddle Rosehearts: 

Riddle gets the haunting feeling that he’s just like his mother. Her abuse was more verbal than physical but he couldn’t help but hear ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ out of the mouths of everyone who learned of the accident. He felt sick to his stomach despite his constant apologies and overbearing doting over his injured child. He handled them like a fragile antique, no magic allowed in the house unless they were a safe distance away. He still had a specific set of rules in place to prevent something like that

Jackson POV:

Today was a slow day, crap. Never say it's a slow day when your covering the ER. 

Bailey - "Incoming trauma, multiple vehicle collision and cyclist vs vehicle multiple crush injuries everyone be ready!"

What did I tell you? Anyway I go to get a trauma gown on and y/n comes up next to me.

Y/n - "If there's any open breaks I call dibs." Jackson - "Hey! No fair, whoever gets to them first gets it, okay?" Y/n - "Pleaseee, I haven't been inside an OR for days and I think I'm going insane. I pissed off Derek by accident and now he's letting Lexie scrub in and not me." Jackson - "Fine." Y/n - "Thank you so much!"

She exclaimed and then walked off to go wait for the ambulance. See, if it was anyone else, I would've stood my ground but, it's not just anyone it's y/n/n (your nickname) and it's obvious to everyone but her that I like her. But, oh well, she'll get the hint eventually right?

I walked outside just as the first ambulance arrived.

Paramedic - "Male, 31, crush injuries to the chest and lower abdomen, broken right leg and lacerations to the upper left abdomen!"

I see y/n face light up at the mention of a broken limb, she wants to do ortho so, she's into that kinda stuff. It's adorable to say the least.

We wheel in the guy on the stretcher and transfer him to the gurney. We begin to look at the chest to see if there's any liquid in the cavity and thankfully there isn't but. the abdomen began to swell so we knew he had free flowing liquid in there so we went straight to the OR.

Time skip to when they're finished and the guy's in post-op:

Y/n POV:

I'm currently waiting for this guy we just operated on to wake up. Jackson is bedside me, we're leanig against the nurses station as his eyelids begin to flutter. We make a b-line for his room. 

Guy - "Where am I?" Y/n - "Sir you're in the hospital. You werew involved in an accident involving 3 cars and yourself, you were on your bike. Other than your broken leg, which means we will need to keep you in here for another couple weeks to monitor it and so Dr. Torres can look you over and plan your recovery, your other injuries were fixed in the OR. You had some crush injuries that ruptured your spleen but, because we got in there quick we managed to repair it. The other injuries were superficial. For the sutures we will get Dr. Sloan to come in and check up on them ever other day to make sure it's all healing properly. Forgot to mention, Dr. Sloan is a plastic surgeon and Dr. Torres is an orthopaedic surgeon. Any question?" Guy - "Not about the medical stuff but I do have a question for you sweetheart." Y/n - "Go for it." Guy - "You free tonight? Such a pretty girl like you shouldn't be without a boyfriend." Y/n - "Oh, that's very sweet of you but unfortunately I'm on call tonight." Guy - "That's fine, just come visit me sweetheart. A young thing like you could make any man feel better." Y/n - "We'll see, maybe I'll come see you maybe I won't. Goodbye sir." Guy - "Bye sweetheart!"

I walked out of the room with Jackson close behind me. That man is very flattering but kinda creepy. I'm going to put away his chart when Jackson stopped me. 

Jackson - "Hey, what the hell was that?" Y/n - "What do you mean?" Jackson - "Don't bullshit me y/n. In there with the patient." Y/n - "Oh my god Jackson, I was reciprocating emotions it's basic patient care." Jackson - "Yeah comforting them and sharing concerns. Not flirting with them!" Y/n - "Okay wh- Jackson.." My voice calmed down a lot at this point and I looked him directly in his mesmerising green eyes.  Jackson - "What?!" Y/n - "You're jealous." At this point I was giggling at him. His face contorted into a shocked almost offended face but I didn't care because the blush that covered his face made it obvious that I was right. Jackson - "Wha-what, no I am not." Y/n - "Yeah you are don't deny it." Jackson - "I am not."  Y/n - "Yeah you areeee"

At this point he had accepted defeat and took the chart out my hand and grabbed my hand. I didn't question his actions and just followed him like a lost puppy. We came to a stop outside an on-call room and he opened the door and pushed me inside.

Y/n - "Jackson wha-"

I was cut off by his lips on mine. His arms snaked their way around my waist and pulled me close. My hands were around his neck as his soft lips moved against mine. He turned us around and gently pushed me against the door and pulled away briefly to speak.

Jackson - "I was jealous. Okay? I really like you  y/n/n." I tried to speak but he cut me off. "Don't say anything unless you want me to stop."

He pulled me back in and locked the door. He walked me over to one of the beds and gently laid me down. 

Let's just say I didn't get to go back to the patients room that night.

assigning flowers pt 3 ignihyde and diasomnia (includes spoilers for those who haven't read either)

idia shroud -> asphodel. it means peace (after death), the afterlife, and recovery. he's still affected by the grief and loss of his brother, having never healthily coped with his brother's death. he was never given support to grieve and never learned how to since his parents were, in other words, neglectful of how witnessing the loss of his younger sibling, could affect him. so i assign asphodel because during his overblot, he was given the chance to become close to his brother's death, the afterlife. and after his overblot, he can be given the chance to grieve, peace after death. ortho shroud -> my son <3 i assign him cypress! (yes, the tree). cypress means eternal life and connecting life and death. eternal life because idia's brother lives on in ortho, they share a soul, in a way that it's shocking to realize an artificial human can even have one. ortho loves idia as much as the boy he was created to replace does. and connection between life and death, because, well, i think it's self-explanatory. malleus draconia -> he was kinda difficult to assign. but i eventually decided on purple hydrangea! meaning a desire to understand someone. he struggles to understand why lilia (and yuu) would leave, and it affects him greatly if the way he decided to put everyone to sleep is anything to go by. but also, i assign him wormwood, sorrow and bitterness. he's upset about lilia leaving and only wants him to stay, so he chooses to unleash a "gift". lilia vanrouge -> he was also difficult but i eventually set on the red and orange spider lily... :) red means the circle of life, and the orange means goodbye and farewell. the circle of life because he's leaving nrc because he's losing his magic and growing old, his time is growing less. and the orange spider lily because he intended on leaving without saying goodbye to malleus or silver, both of which are his sons whether or not he realizes that. silver -> silver my son :( i assign him daisies for their many meanings: loyal love (and i mean this in the most familial type of way), youth, and new beginnings. he's still young, he's a human raised by a fae, and he only wants what's best for his father, to repay him for raising him (which is so sad). silver's psychology goes deep and i think daisies are a good flower to show that. sebek zigivolt -> edelweiss! like deuce, i assign him this plant because of its meaning of courage and strength. i also assign this flower because it means dedication. sebek, while hard to get along with and understand, is a great character! he's strong and courageous, and (maybe annoyingly) dedicated to malleus.

bonus:

grim -> i love grim, but i know out of everyone, he'd be the most heartbroken when the prefect leaves. he's often quoted calling mc his other half. and yeah, he's quite the stubborn, prideful little shit, but during book 6, it's so obvious how much he cares for the prefect. so, because of this, i assign him the forget-me-not. they naturally mean "do not forget me" which i know grim would want the prefect to do, remember him because he'll remember them. they also mean true love, and i mean this in a platonic form. the care grim has for the prefect is returned, and i know he loves them as a good friend (possibly in a parental light). they also mean to cherish memories, and i know grim would, remembering all the times he's shared with mc, good and bad, exciting and boring, he'll cherish them all. yuu/mc -> yuu is hard to assign. they come in different presentation from the game to the manga. but i've assigned them ivy, which means strength, resilience and friendship. strength and resilience, because while they deal with the constant overblots and being tossed in a new world, they remain resilient to continue, to get home. and friendship, because, well, grim :(. but i also assign them the pansy and marigold. pansy, because it means remembrance and nostalgia, and it's obvious they have the constant nostalgia of home, remembering some things similar to twisted wonderland at times. and the marigold because it means despair at loss, jealousy and grief: they're grieving their loss of their home, and sometimes they're jealous and feel completely useless living in a world that relies on magic.

Summary: Idia’s not quite better but he refuses to stay in his room, so you wrapped him in a fireproof blanket and took him to see little Ortho.

If there was one trick you’ve learned to have feral pets become comfortable around your presence, it’s to wrap said critter up in a blanket and take them everywhere you can. Though, honestly, having Idia snug against your chest as you walked up the stairs was more the result of Idia wandering in places he shouldn’t. His panicky nature makes you a bit paranoid that he’ll start a house fire.

The will o’ the wisp shrieked when your hand reached out to the doorknob, though it wasn’t as loud as it was when he came to consciousness. Nor was his flame as sparking. He burned you but that was your fault for thinking he’d be knocked out for longer.

You bobbed his blanket-covered head. “It’s just my hand. Calm down.”

He didn’t struggle to get your hand off. You looked down to see him staring up at you with his little jewel eyes. Honestly, you didn’t think they’d show any sort of emotion, precious stones as they are, but you can tell he’s not maddened with paranoia and panic. Just, mild discomfort as most. Kinda like when Jade and Floyd gave into their fate of being held by you.

“Hey,” you inclined your head through the doorway, “take a look. It’s Ortho.”

Ortho, on the other hand, took to you very quickly. And as such, you trust him to wander about without making accidents happen. His tank was open just a crack in case he couldn’t take the indoor air and the entirety of the floor was covered in various pillows and blankets so the little flame doesn’t hurt himself.

Off to the side, you heard a weak squeak before a light ghostly cough trailed after it. Somehow or another, Ortho managed to construct a mini fortress right next to the tank using the blankets. One hand was gripping it, like he was trying to drag it inside his tank.

Idia, upon seeing his sickly little brother, started to shuffle and squirm. You patted him back down when he tried to squeeze out of your grip.

“Nope, not yet. He’s still sick.” You’ve watched Idia care for the Ortho to the point of stressing both himself and his brother. The smaller wisp was still in a delicate period and you don’t want to set his recovery back. “But see? He’s doing alright. I didn’t do anything bad to him.”

As though to placate him, Ortho did a small wave before crawling right back into the tank, apparently giving up on trying to get his fortress in there. He closed the glass lid before collapsing on his various sheets and toys you’ve found buried in your closet. He kicked up a rubber ball before just collapsing on a nearby wrinkle.

“Well,” you smoothed Idia’s head when he retreated deeper into your grip, “he tuckered himself out. What about you?”

All you heard was a wispy sigh. Seems his nerves were all tied up until now. You should put him back to bed.

Did you see the ending of chapter 6? I have so many questions but don't wanna spoil anything

***Chapter 6 main story spoilers below the cut!***

From what I understand, it seems that OG!Ortho and Robo!Ortho “merged”, so now they are one being? Like, it’s still the Robo!Ortho we know and love, but with the full extent of a “heart” and “humanness” that he lacked before (contributed from OG!Ortho, who has now safely passed on). 

Idia also formally acknowledges Robo!Ortho as his “brother” and tells Ortho he’s free to be his own person instead of just an AI with the sole purpose of emulating his dead brother. Ortho even becomes officially enrolled as a first-year student (he’s in Class 1-C!), so he’s already making great leaps in terms of personal growth and developing his own identity.

As for Idia, he’s slowly starting to acclimate to being around other people and socializing instead of always shutting himself off from the world and stewing in his own self-loathing and guilt. He’s on the path to growth and recovery as well!

We also get a preview and hints for what Diasomnia might entail. Mickey mentions having seen a boy with silver hair and strange eyes (which probably refers to Silver), though the context for this isn’t quite clear yet. More importantly, I feel that the subjects Malleus and Lilia discuss throughout chapter 6 will become extremely relevant again in chapter 7. More specifically, I am referring to the importance of bonds and what one does with the short lifespans they are granted.

It seems that Malleus is either unaware of or demonstrates very little understanding for the brevity of non-fae lives (and, I would argue, the true importance of friendships). But he is forced to look mortality in the face when he sees how much Vil has aged. He sees his classmates rejoicing as they are united with their kidnapped dorm leaders (and vice dorm leader, in Jamil’s case). It’s all so different than anything he has personally experienced. Malleus has so much time left ahead of him, time that his classmates won’t have. Most of his own relationships seem shallow at best, and school life fleeting. He’s confused by it all, or at the very least contemplating about it now that Lilia has reminded him of those concepts (if his long pauses/moments of silence are anything to go by).

I think that chapter 7 will further expand on this concept, tackling the ideas of mortality, how short lives are, how one must cherish the relationships and the time they have. Most importantly, I think the story will come full circle with something Crowley introduced in the prologue: that in cooperating and working together, we will be able to overcome any obstacle (well, specifically defeating RSA, but I mean in more holistic way). These ideas will most likely use Malleus’s loneliness as a springboard for exploration, but I think that it won’t be exclusively applied to his friendship with Yuu. I think it’s very likely that chapter 7 will also address Malleus’s relationship with the others in Diasomnia, particularly Sebek and Silver, who are in part or entirely human.

Regarding Yuu, I honestly don’t think chapter 7 will revolve too heavily around their relationship with Malleus (but obviously it will still be present, probably to help with investigating or something), but rather will deal with the mystery of the mirror and Mickey, as well as their friendship with Grim. Keep in mind that we still haven’t seen Grim’s (anticipated) OB yet, we only recovered him from STYX. It’s possible that Grim will be the chapter 7 OB, whether in conjunction with, or in place of, Malleus’s OB. I can definitely see Malleus and the rest of NRC coming to grips with “the power of friendship” and banding together to fight OB Grim in one final, epic battle.

I don’t really have an idea for how Ignihyde will return and help with the Diasomnia chapter though I’ve seen lots of memes about Idia flashing technology at OB Malleus to one shot him 😂 Considering all the memeing being done about Vil would kick down Idia’s bedroom door and drag him out to socialize before the official release of chapter 6... and then chapter 6 turning out to be nothing like what we expected, I’m thinking chapter 7 will also be something completely unexpected.
