Ciao :) I'm visiting Italy soon and even-though I've been learning basic Italian for a while I feel very self-conscious and unsure about a few things. I would mostly like to know 2 things. How to say a.) Can I pay with a card? (I usually say Posso pagare con una carta but I don't know if this is correct) and how to say I'd like to order 3 coffees/etc if I'm ordering for more than one person (I'm travelling with 2 other people and would like to try and order for all of us). Hope this makes sense and thank you so much in advance - I appreciate your help!

Ciao! First of all, please, don't worry about your Italian level. We do understand English (at least, if you go to restaurants and bars or any tourist-related place, or talk to most middle aged-to-younger people in the streets) and also, we do try our best to understand whatever you are trying to ask us: use some gestures, draw, write... We do understand and don't mind about you not being good in Italian. I will never stress this enough: we're already heart-eye-emoji when you tell us "Buongiorno!". So really, just enjoy your time here and don't worry. We'll help you communicate with us in whatever language of your choice.

To answer your doubts: 1) yes, "Posso pagare con una carta?" is perfect. We may even just say "Carta?" tbh (we're lazy :D), but your question is perfect the way you wrote it. 2) For ordering food there's an easy rule: number of that thing you want (for you and others) + that thing name. In this case: number of coffees you need + word "coffee" = "tre caffé". Another example could be "una lasagna e due penne al pomodoro, per favore*" if you need to split orders. *Once you're done ordering you can add "per piacere/per favore"=please or "grazie" (this one is better when they bring you your orders but works anytime tbh), as you would in English. Not mandatory ofc. But again, don't worry and just enjoy :)

Their favorite breakfast foods are avgofetes (Greek equivalent of French toast) with feta and honey, and crepes, usually with fresh fruit.

Their favorite Greek / Cypriot foods include (but are not limited to) souvla (barbecued meat), gyros, sheftalia (a kind of sausage), octopus and salt cod, makarónia tou foúrnou (a Cypriot equivalent of mac n cheese), and loukoumia (a Cypriot equivalent of a Turkish delight).

Their favorite food groups are seafood, dairy, fruits, and vegetables.

They are partial to pork when it comes to meat that isn’t seafood.

We got back from Vegas on Sunday, and somehow I feel both refreshed and exhausted lol. But I really needed that break from work - the weeks leading up to my vacation were super hectic so doing absolutely nothing while laying around in the intense Nevada sun really helped us to reset.

I didn’t take as many photos as I usually do, and I also tried my best to stay off social media and truly unplug, but I might have another opportunity since we’re thinking of heading back in a few months (maybe to the suburbs instead of staying directly on the Strip).

In the meantime, we’re back in Chicago, where it’s 60 degrees and overcast, but at least the food’s better and more reasonably priced 😇

several months ago i was out late having dinner w my friends and everyone decided on olive garden, which is a restaurant i don’t like. i don’t particularly like italian food to begin w and olive garden is ridiculously expensive for a fuckin chain restaurant. last time i ordered a proper meal there i just had fettucine alfredo and it was like $16.50 and they would’ve charged me like 2 or 3 extra bucks just to add BROCCOLI. at restaurants that aren’t even italian but happen to offer alfredo pasta it often just gives you broccoli for the sake of it but NO. i was SO mad the last time i ate my last proper meal at olive garden that i vowed i’d never eat there again. $16.50 for broccoli-less pasta that had been thrown in the microwave with wet generic alfredo sauce on it, nah. plus tip. no. i told myself i’m just never eating there again, i HATE that place.

but then i lost the vote but still wanted to go out w my friends and i knew i wouldn’t get home till like, after 11 o’clock at night and i was not gonna make myself a proper dinner so i may as well eat something. and i had recently thought of this much better strategy: just order a dessert instead of an entree. i thought of this first when i went out to a restaurant that’s kinda es’pensive, and where i really just wanted to try to dessert and a proper entree probably would’ve filled me to the point where i wouldn’t be able to eat a dessert before going home. life hack by the way: you don’t have to order dinner at a restaurant. if you just want a dessert they will give it to you.

so anyway i was at olive garden back in like february and im like uggghhhh. fine. i’m not leaving this place on an empty stomach. i told the waitress i will have......... a piece of strawberry cream cake. and a glass of chardonnay.

and that is the most “i’ve been good” ass meal i think i’ve ever ordered. the waitress giggled at me.

my sister last week was hanging out w two of the friends i was w when i ordered my i’ve been good ass meal and apparently they still talk about it.

Vernerdì sono arrivata a Roma! La città è bellissima. Il mio posto preferito, fino ad ora, era il Pantheon. Non so perchè, ma quel edificio mi ha veramente colpito. Si sente il passato, è un atmosfera magico.

Da un punto di vista linguistico, la mia esperienza qui è stata così così. Sono riuscita a comprare un biglietto settimanale per la metro in italiano, ma altrimenti tutti mi parlano in inglese. Oggi ho provato a ordinare un snack in italiano, ma il venditore non mi ha capito (momento imbarazzante 😅). Forse la raggione era il mio accento, forse ho parlato troppo piano (come lo faccio spesso), forse era perchè ho chiamato un tramezzino un "panino" lol... Comunque, alla fine ho indicato con la dita quello che volevo e dicevo "questo, per favore". Un vero punto basso 😂😂
