As much as Batman is a terrifying symbol to the underworld, he is also a symbol to the good people of this city. A symbol of hope.

Ok but the Duke in my mind having the feeling that those who choose vigilantism have a responsibility to uphold the SECOND they curate a space where others are reliant on them + Cass solely wanting to fight at first and putting the mission above all else due to not caring about herself being Bruces (who also puts the mission above all else and feels a responsibility to Gotham that he knows will kill him one day) favorite kids
#is it rlly that they’re his faves bc of being the ‘good ones’#or do they reflect parts of himself that he’s constantly told are detrimental in a way that allows him to take pride in said parts#taking HEAVY liberties with canon btw this is basically a hc to me do not take it seriously this is NOT srs character analysis thx#I mean it’s kinda serious in MY mind but it’s purely based in being tired of fandom and not actually comics 💀#this is my version of the ‘Everyone treats tim badly so he is sad till they’re sorry’ thing#anyways#BONUS#Bruce is so mean to damian bc he reflects him in ways he doesn’t like#and he’s projecting his failures onto him instead of seeing him as a fucking child#thinking of that one panel#yknow the one#anyways everytime damian does smth he doesn’t like he sees it as the Batman failing on a moral standpoint#not his kid having his own personality or needing some guidance#whatever tho#I’m deleting this tomorrow but if I ever learn how to write#imma make my own sad tim fic where it’s just tim wallowing over nothing and everyone ignoring him <3#for my piece of mind#I promise I like Tim guys this is abt fanon Tim#but yknow what writers are riding tim too much atm tbh so this is current tim hate as well#Tim was cooler when he was well adjusted and bitchy and everyone knew it#instead of pretending he’s right all the time and every1 just went “ofc Tim!#ALSO I’m a big fan of great dad Bruce I just know him kinda sucking is also canon and fun for angst

Over the last week, I decided to go ahead with bookmarking all the fics I've recommended over the years on AO3 since I abide by tumblr poll results always (and man pour one out for all the fic that never made it to AO3 or has since been deleted, sooooo many gems lost to time!) and it was a bit more than the ~3,000 I was expecting:
Tumblr media
Hopefully, this will be easier than browsing the hundreds of recs posts I've made, since you can filter for any of the author's tags now! These are mostly focused on Star Wars and DC fandom, but I did my time in the anime mines and occasional tours through some TV fandoms or movies. You can dig into everything unfiltered and start your own filtering, or the bigger fandoms you'll find:
MAJOR FANDOMS: Each of these should have 100+ at minimum and, in the case of Star Wars, literally almost half of them are in that fandom. Look, Star Wars fandom might be a trash fire in a lot of ways, but it is ON FIRE with some good fic. (Older bookmarks not guaranteed to match my current sentiments, especially re: the Jedi, but they did catch my fancy at that point in time!)
STAR WARS: - All Star Wars -OR- All Star Wars minus the Obi-Wan/Anakin ship - OR- Nothing BUT Obi-Wan/Anakin
BATMAN/DC: - DC can sometimes be tricky, but you can do a Batman* search and get most of them (though, sometimes Nightwing* or Young Justice* or Superman* will catch some of the others). Honestly, though, you might want to just do a search for what character or dynamic you like and have fun from there, because otherwise you're getting a face full of my Dick Grayson Is The Center Of The Universe And I'm Making That Everyone Else's Problem agenda. ;)
MARVEL/MCU: - Marvel* will probably get most of the various properties, though you may want to filter for Defenders* or Guardians of the Galaxy* if you're interested -OR- Marvel* without the Thor/Loki - These focus a lot on the Thor* fandom if you want to witness the results of like 8 years of constant voracious reading in that fandom (Minus the ship), because, seriously, I read a LOT of Odinson family fic. - Bonus, just do a search for Maximoff* to find some really good X-Men: First Class-verse because, listen, I have been ALL ABOUT the Maximoff twins since long before the movies or MCU brought them over and I will DIE ON THE HILL of "Marvel, make Magneto their bio-dad again or I'm never reading another comic of yours ever".
TOLKIEN/LORD OF THE RINGS/SILMARILLION/HOBBIT: - Tolkien* -OR- Hobbit* -OR- Lord of the Rings* searches will turn up most of my Elf-hunting, I primarily focus on the Sindar Elves, but look I can't resist my problematic Feanorian faves or that I will die on the hill that Fingolfin is the best ever. (You have NO IDEA how sad I am that so much fic on Stories of Arda or FFNET is not easily bookmarked on AO3, sob. I externally bookmarked a few of the bigger ones, but sooo many shorter faves are missing from my recs tag.)
CLAMP: - X/Tokyo Babylon legitimately bums me out because it's not a huge fandom and yet so much of what was written was pre-AO3 and lost when CLAMPesque went down or was never brought over from Livejournal, yet this fandom (well, the Seishirou/Subaru pairing) still burns brightly in my heart.
MINOR FANDOMS: Ones that probably only have under 100 bookmarks (often around the 20-30 bookmarks range), but will at least give you a place to start! ANIME/MANGA: Bleach | Cardcaptor Sakura | Dragonball | Finder no Hyouteki/Viewfinder | Katekyou Hitman Reborn! | Kuroko no Basuke | One Piece | Sailor Moon | Madoka Magica | Naruto | Princess Tutu | Trigun | Weiss Kreuz | Yuri!!! on Ice
BOOKS: Chrestomanci | Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint
DRAMAS: Nirvana in Fire | The Untamed -OR- Modao Zu Shi
TV SHOWS/MOVIES: Community | Game of Thrones -OR- ASOIAF | Good Omens | Hannibal | Highlander | The Old Guard | Our Flag Means Death | Stranger Things
VIDEO GAMES: Dragon Age: Inquisition | Final Fantasy 8 | Genshin Impact | Okami
BANDS: Arashi
All right, whew, that was actually a fun project, despite how much work it was to hunt down a lot of older faves to see if they were on AO3, hopefully you'll find this useful!

Your post about that dialogue from Gotham Knights (the game) made me think back on how much I miss Bruce and Dick's relationship tbh. Like obv it was never the healthiest thing ever, and Bruce was always emotionally constipated, but it always felt a little more... equal? Recently it's just felt so toxic, like Bruce will be an asshole, and Dick will be hurt by it but will still come back to him and will remove the burden of Bruce apologizing for anything from him. Like the scene between them in Nightwing 100, where Bruce is rightfully apologizing for his crap and Dick says he doesn't have to. I do like that scene (even if it was over the top), but that's not right. Like, no sir, he has a lot to apologize for lmao. But that's literally been their dynamic for so long. Whenever Bruce should be called out, Dick just forgives him and Bruce goes back to doing the same old shit again, and Dick forgives him again, and rinse and repeat.
Honestly, it feels like whoever wrote those scenes took a look at that one meme of Batman slapping Robin and said "hey, they like that, let's do that!" Like, you can't go a long time without Bruce hitting Dick. Because they think fans eat that shit up ig. They are so attached to their shock value Bruce and Dick fights and their image of brooding Bruce that they won't address their fucked-up relationship and won't change the status quo. We have gotten many scenes of them being great together and having sweet moments, but those all feel tainted by the rest of it. It's as recent as the amnesia arc where Bruce re-traumatized Dick and then didn't help him when he was living in his car and then pretty much emotionally manipulated him to become Nightwing again. Recent comics really have forgotten what Batman is about.
And it sucks, because Dick is my fave of all faves, but I also love the hell out of Bruce Wayne, and it's so sad to see him be reduced to this... only brooding, borderline abusive asshole. They won't let him grow or develop. I don't mind conflict, and I like that they have a complicated relationship. I didn't even mind Bruce punching Dick, because it's interesting. Once was fine, twice was fine, the same thing happening all the time without addressing it and with no change across years is kind of a problem. I'm only keeping up with the Nightwing run out of loyalty to my boy, but from what I've heard of the events that are happening outside of that, it seems that they are having issues again, and I'm waiting for the next Batman issue that features Nightwing to also feature another punch or something. It's always Bruce being coddled by the story and never being asked to make the step forward, it's always Dick that has to give in and make Bruce feels better about his flaws and free him of any responsibility for his actions even when it's time for Bruce to step up and grow up.
It's why I prefer the animated adaptations or the retellings. I think world's finest did a good job with their relationship, I feel like Robin: Year 1 from back in the day did too, and Young Justice animated for its many flaws has a solid dynamic between them. They still have a complicated relationship, but it isn't so dramatically awful. It allows for a more balanced and well-rounded portrayal of the character when you aren't pandering to some people by flanderizing the character ig. Anyway, sorry for ranting, you're like my fave Dick Grayson blog so I just wanted to share. Hope this wasn't a bother.
No yeah I hated that aspect of Nightwing #100. If TT wanted to do a scene like that, he should’ve built up a conflict between Dick and Bruce to give us some context as to some type of thing Bruce actually needed to apologize for. Then he could’ve had Bruce apologize, Dick accept the apology, and end it with that reconciliation.
Instead, he just had Bruce apologize like, “I’m sorry I failed you, I’m sorry I pushed you away, I’m sorry if I ever made you feel like I wasn’t proud of you,” which would’ve hit much harder if, again, they had shown some kind of recent conflict between Bruce and Dick to warrant that sudden apology. And for Dick to then express his own hurt and such over said conflict. And then for them to come to some reconciliation. But yeah it’s very unsatisfying for Bruce to just list things he’s sorry for, and for Dick to hug him and just reassure Bruce. Like nooo let Bruce feel bad. Let Dick feel bad because of what Bruce did to him. Let Dick be angry. Let them both hurt. Then let them heal.
As for the amnesia arc, I feel like they really did a disservice to Bruce by not focusing enough on his trauma from the sniper incident. If they really stressed how much it traumatized him and then showed how his actions were effected by that (like giving him a dire need to have Dick return to normal bc otherwise it’s like Dick just died in his arms on that rooftop) then that is much more sad and compelling, and we can at least kind of see where Bruce is coming from by showing Dick the sniper video (though it would’ve been better if they just… hadn’t done that all).
If I had been writing that issue, I would’ve had it from Bruce’s POV where he would’ve constantly been in a state of flashbacks. Like seeing his parents getting killed and then comparing it to Dick getting shot. And then having flashbacks of Dick when he was younger but then Bruce imagining that Dick keeps getting shot in the head in each of those memories. And all of that literally just like… pushing Bruce over the edge. And then of course when Dick wakes up and asks Bruce “Who are you?” Bruce spirals even further. And we see his descent to this very isolated and dark place where he just wants his son back at all costs. That would’ve been waaaaay more interesting. Extremely dark ofc. But interesting.
Yeah the comic Dick and Bruce relationship can definitely be toxic (and I’m not totally opposed to that bc I think it makes things interesting between them), and there are animated shows that show them in a more balanced light. The Batman (2004) is one of those shows as well. Dick was Robin then ofc, and Bruce wasn’t so dark at that point in life. But when you watch shows like that, it reminds you of the character Bruce is supposed to be, and it reminds you of what you like the most about him. So definitely nice to watch shows like that sometimes to remind yourself of the Bruce Wayne that exists outside of modern comics.

Here’s how I judge what’s going on in mainline Batman comics. If Bruce is doing shit that would at least end his friendships with Clark and Diana and at worst would earn him a beat down from both, it’s probably crossing a line into “we didn’t think this through we just wanted to be shocking” territory. Or I suppose more likely each writer being determined to leave their mark on the legacy and idk maybe Miller is still the big example everyone thinks of.
my point is I know some folks get pissy when you ignore canon but like, canon has one of the biggest superheroes ever doing villain type shit soooo yeah. I’ll pass.
also if you enjoy it, kudos. I’m happy for you. I’m just personally tired of not being able to enjoy my fave superhero. As much as I enjoyed Batman beyond I don’t actually want to see that type of future play out for Bruce and the batfam it’s not great.

My Favorite Comics of 2023
Sometimes I think I should review all the comics I read as I read them. Then I realize I read like...40 comics a month and decide to not do that. But I figured I could at least round up my favorite books of 2023!
So as not to bury the lede...
My Favorite Comic of 2023: Green Arrow
Was there ever any question? All I have ever wanted for like 20 years at this point is Arrowfamily shenanigans, and this book has been all about reassembling the gang and letting them romp through the DC universe. This is an Ollie who is overflowing with love and bad ideas, and that's perfect. Every character and relationship has gotten a chance to shine so far, and I can't wait until they bring the girls in. I especially love how clear it is that Roy is Williamson and Izaakse's favorite. ME TOO, GUYS, ME TOO. The fact that this is now an ongoing instead of a limited series is the best gift DC could have given me.
The rest of my faves...
Alan Scott: The Green Lantern: I did not expect to be as moved by this book as I am. The overall plot is a bit hard to follow, but that's not really the point of the comic. What blows me away every issue is how unflinching and occasionally brutal the book is in its portrayal of 1940s-era homophobia, including Alan's internalized self-hatred, and yet how simultaneously incredibly kind the book is. The love and validation, especially in #2 and #3, is so generous and beautiful. Also, it's the best and most beautiful I've ever see Cian Tormey's art look - he gives everything such a hazy, heartbreaking softness here. Please read this book.
Batman/Superman: World's Finest: This continues to be one of the most enjoyable books DC is putting out right now. Mora is one of those artists, like Doc Shaner, who draws the DC universe exactly 100% the way it looks in my hindbrain, and Waid is absolutely in his sweet spot of classic heroes, Silver Age lore, and extremely comic book-y adventure. Plus, Tamra Bonvillain is doing that thing she does with colors that taps directly into the happiness center of my brain - they are so rich and sunny and joyful.
Birds of Prey: I love everything Kelly Thompson writes and I'm so glad we finally have her at DC. She is the absolute perfect writer for this book, too - she gives such good superheroine. The banter! The action! The way she mixes and matches her cast in such fun combinations! Leonardo Romero's layouts are so kinetic and fun, and Jordie Bellaire's colors, YOU GUYS, JORDIE BELLAIRE'S FUNKY SEVENTIES COLORS! I can hear the soundtrack of this book. Love love love.
The Flash: To be clear, I mean the Jeremy Adams run that ended earlier this year with #800. I will forever be salty that DC canceled this delightful book, which was all of the action and humor and heart and love of continuity that I crave in comics, in favor of the so far completely mid Spurrier series. RIP Adams run, you were too good for this world.
Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville: This book got off to a slightly slow start, in my opinion, but every issue just gets better and better. It is so funny, and I want Natacha Bustos to design every outfit I ever wear for the rest of my life. Plus, Tamra Bonvillain is doing the color thing here, too! I want to live in her world.
Poison Ivy: I trust G. Willow Wilson with my life. This is such a good, complex, nuanced take on Ivy. (Also messy and poly and queer.) I have no idea where this story is going but I'm on this ride 'til the end.
And finally...
Favorite Backlist Title: Starman (1994): You guys. YOU GUYS. I mainlined all 80 issues of this series this year at an absolutely blistering pace because I did not want to stop reading it for even a single second. It's everything I love about comics: truly serialized storytelling with a huge cast and lots of intertwining subplots, tons of twists and foreshadowing that pay off in immensely satisfying ways, a deep dive into continuity that's still accessible to people who know almost nothing about Starman (me), a love letter to a fictionopolis, and one funky little dude trying his best at the center of it. I am BEGGING you to read Starman. Please.

as promised the separate comics/graphic novels roundup for 2023! this is a normal post until May when I realized I could (as a graphic novel librarian) become an Eisner voter and read 54 comics in a month (and then slightly less so in August when the Harveys came up.) below a cut because it's heinously long. I'll include my little write-ups and some panels right after my faves
JANUARY
Under the Red Hood by Judd Winick and Doug Mahnke I read this January second. Begin as you mean to go on! For all its flaws (Dick's Squidward face) the emotional arc of this story puts me right into the pit about Jason Todd.
Superman: Reign of the Supermen by Dan Jurgens and others
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest (ongoing) by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, and Travis Moore First off Dan Mora draws everyone like the most beautiful people in the world, which never hurts to look at. But also this is just a really fun comic! The action is fun the characters are very sweet and we get an honest to god Superbat gem fusion
Young Justice (1998) by Peter David and Todd Nauck MY CHILDREN! I was finishing up my Tim readthrough and was so delighted to meet Kon and Cassie and Bart and Cissie and Anita (I still don't care for Lobo.) Nauck's art is cartoony in a way that fits the comic really well.
Red Robin by Christopher Yost, Fabian Nicieza, Ramón Bachs, and Marcus To THEEEEE ARC for Tim. Everyone says read Red Robin. Yes read Red Robin but also understand this is him at his worst and most scrungly. This is not normal Tim. This is Tim's failgirl era.
Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day by Judd Winick and Ale Garza
MARCH
You and a Bike and a Road by Eleanor Davis Beautiful little memoir comic about biking across the US, and also about borders and travel and isolation/togetherness.
Tumblr media
Superman for All Seasons by Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, and Bjarne Hansen I love this comic. Tim Sale draws Clark like the biggest, softest person you've ever seen, and Bjarne Hansen's colors are so gentle. (if you remember the rock metaphor from mission parameters, it's inspired by this scene from Book 1: Spring)
Tumblr media
APRIL
Superman: Lost by Christopher Priest and Carlos Parlaguyan (ongoing) This series cuts right to the horror of being Superman and also the horror of being Lois Lane SO deftly. a few plot points I don't love but overall God it makes me miserable
Tumblr media
Birds of Maine by Michael Deforge A delightful, dreamy collection of comics about birds living in a utopian society on the moon. The art is weird, the story is weird, everything about it is lovely.
Tumblr media
MAY
Divinity v1-2 by Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine
The City of Belgium by Brecht Evans This is not a perfect graphic novel but the stuff it does with art and page and rhythm is so so phenomenal.
Tumblr media
Lights, Planets, People! by Lizzy Stewart and Molly Naylor
Killadelphia v1-3 by Rodney Barnes, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Christopher Mitten
The Department of Truth v1-4 by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds This is a book about conspiracy theories and it is DEEPLY unsettling. Martin Simmonds' art makes me legitimately queasy to look at. Really really good but also it did send me into a little spiral for a bit.
Tumblr media
Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely (Mat Lopes' colors also deserve a shoutout) This book made me cry! Also I have yet to read another Kara comic because this one was so good and I'm afraid the others won't be. She's sharp and angry in all the best ways and also deeply deeply caring and good. Capes meets space fantasy at its best. I would die for Ruthye
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) v1-2 by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo
Batman: One Bad Day: The Riddler by Tom King and Mitch Gerads
She-Hulk (2022) v1-2 by Rainbow Rowell, Luca Maresca, Rogê Antônio, and Takeshi Miyazawa
Superman: Space Age by Mike Russell and Michael Allred
Revenge of the Librarians by Tom Gauld
Pinball: A Graphic History of the Silver Ball by Jon Chad
Down to the Bone: A Leukemia Story by Catherine Pioli
So Much for Love: How I Survived a Toxic Relationship by Sophie Lambda
Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure by Lewis Hancox
Chef’s Kiss by Jarrett Melendez and Danica Brine
Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith
Animal Castle v1 by Xavier Dorison and Felix Delep
Bungleton Green and the Mystic Commandos by Jay Jackson
Flung Out of Space: Inspired by the Indecent Adventures of Patricia Highsmith by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer Masterclass in writing a biopic that doesn't shy away from its subject's being kind of a wretched person while also producing art that is deeply meaningful to many, many people.
Rain by Joe Hill and Zoe Thorogood
Tiki: A Very Ruff Year by David Azencot and Fred Leclerc
Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly, adapted by Brad Ricca and Courtney Sieh
Ultrasound by Conor Stechschulte
Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes, The Graphic Album (various)
A Visit to Moscow by Rabbi Rafael Grossman, adapted by Anna Olswanger and Yevgenia Nayberg
Look Back by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki
Come Over Come Over by Lynda Barry
It’s So Magic by Lynda Barry
My Perfect Life by Lynda Barry What a lovely collection of comics. Barry captures being a teen in all its mess and glory.
Macanudo: Welcome to Elsewhere by Liniers
Always Never by Jordi Lafebre
The Pass by Espé
Mary Jane and Black Cat Beyond
Moon Knight: Black, White and Blood by Jed Mackay and Carlos Villa
The Nice House on the Lake v1-2 by James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno (Jordie Bellaire colors) I know Tynion can do horror, but he really really can do horror. This is like Glass Onion meets the worst nightmare you've ever had, and the way it unfolds is masterful. Martínez Bueno's art is dreamy and unsettling, especially combined with Bellaire who colors like she's painting oil slicks.
Tumblr media
A Vicious Circle by Mattson Tomlin and Lee Bermejo
Booster Gold (1986) by Dan Jurgens Booster my friend Booster. I really didn't expect this to be as FUN as it is! There are occasional storylines that drag but overall a delight.
The Human Target v1-2 by Tom King and Greg Smallwood
Heartstopper v2-4 by Alice Oseman
Killer Queens by David Booher and Claudia Balboni
I Hate This Place v1 by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin I really need to read v2 because this was so fun. Queer backwoods horror, sarcastic, delightful, and never heavy-handed. I read this right after Killer Queens, which read like someone fed a bunch of Drag Race episodes and 2012 tumblr posts into a comics generator, and Heartstopper, which was so blandly unobjectionable I actually forgot I'd read it, so I Hate This Place felt refreshing as hell. (actually while looking up screencaps I remember why I didn't read v2 which is that v1 has a LOT of gore and body horror and I gotta be careful with that stuff. however if you like a slasher go forth)
Tumblr media
It’s Lonely at the Center of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood Gut punch on every page. Thorogood's art is weird and wild. It does feel a bit as though she's opened up her ribs for us to peruse.
Tumblr media
Chivalry by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran
Sensory: Life on the Spectrum (various)
Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen
Public Domain v1 by Chip Zdarsky
Love Everlasting v1 by Tom King and Elsa Charretier
Mazebook by Jeff Lemire A twisting fable about grief and the paths it takes you down. A lot of the Eisner noms had dead wives or daughters which I began to resent, but I gave this a pass because it was really, really beautiful.
Tumblr media
Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton Everyone has told you it's good! oh it's good. Beaton's style, which I associate more with her humor work, at first feels somewhat at war with the subject matter, but it ended up really working for me.
Days of Sand by Aimee DeJongh
Talk to My Back by Yamada Murasaki This was one of my favorite books of the whole year. Beautiful meditation on the compromises of marriage and motherhood in beautiful, sparse drawings that lingered with me long after I'd finished reading.
Tumblr media
Crushing by Sophie Burrows
JUNE
Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson Do you like wrestling? I don't really care about it, but I do love weird wacky stories about grief and trying to fight your way through the afterlife to get your mom back. Both hilarious and poignant. The art is as bombastic as it needs to be.
Tumblr media
The Night Eaters v1 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda Liu and Takeda are back! This time with some horror about a pair of siblings and their fucked up parents. Great stuff.
Tumblr media
Ripple Effects by Jordan Hart and Bruno Chiroleu
Superman: Up in the Sky by Tom King and Andy Kubert Oh the Clark Kent of it all. the panel where Clark is calling home from alien customs because he has flown to the ends of the universe for one little girl is really what got me in this one
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross
Superman: American Alien by Max Landis and various artists
Superman Red and Blue (anthology) This is a whole lot of writers and a whole lot of artists and all of them are excellent. Once again the Clark Kent emotion is happening to me.
JULY
Superman: Birthright by Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu
Superman (2011) v5-6 by Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder
Superman: Warworld by Philip Kennedy Johnson and various artists
Justice League International by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire Booster my friend Booster is here and also so are all of my other new friends. I loved the initial run (though it has its weak spots) but then I had to slog through a lot of very bad later stuff.
AUGUST
Blue and Gold by Dan Jurgens and Ryan Sook
New Teen Titans (various Brother Blood issues) by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez
Acting Class by Nick Drnaso
Follow Me Down: A Reckless Book by Ed Brubaker
Girl Juice by Benji Nate
Little Monsters v1 by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen
Mimosa by Archie Bongiovanni
Who Will Make the Pancakes by Megan Kelso
Cat + Gamer by Wataru Nadatani
Goodbye, Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Spy x Family v1-2 by Tatsuya Endo
Alice on the Run: One Child’s Journey Through the Rwandan Civil War by Gaspard Talmasse
Ashes by Álvaro Ortiz
The Extraordinary Part: Book One: Orsay’s Hands by Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot The art and story here are simply so fabulous. A better world is possible and sometimes you have to take direct action to make it!
Tumblr media
SEPTEMBER
Batman RIP by Grant Morrison and Tony S. Daniel
Batman Incorporated by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham
Batman and Robin (2011) by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason I've talked about this one before but I think it is truly one of my favorite depictions of Bruce as father in all the ways he succeeds and all the ways he fails. John Kalisz's luminous colors also deserve a shoutout.
OCTOBER
Batman: Failsafe and Gotham War by literally everyone currently working in DC but especially Zdarsky
Birds of Prey (1999) by Chuck Dixon and then Gail Simone and a number of other people (this continued into November and December) This made the worms in my brain wriggle so bad that I wrote a whole yuri zine piece about Dinah and Babs, coming to a PDF (or physical copy!) near you soon!
DECEMBER
Dungeon Meshi v1-11 by Ryoko Kui Is it romantic to devour and be devoured in turn? Ryoko Kui sure thinks so. I was hungry the whole time I was making these my bedtime reading.
Through the Woods by Emily Carroll Emily Carroll is among the best to ever do it. This collection of stories is her at her unsettling best.
When I Arrived at the Castle by Emily Carroll
Batgirl (2000) v1-3 by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott thanks to Mssrs Puckett and Scott I am now fully unhinged about Cass Cain and her quest for immolation. the art in this is so stylized but so well-done, especially given how little text is in much of the series. when the paneling hits it HITS.
Tumblr media
Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive by everyone working at DC in 2002 When a good crossover storyline works, it really really works. I love to see Bruce completely blow up his life because he doesn't see any point in existing outside the cowl anymore. Even more do I love to see the fallout from this on everyone who loves him! delight delight delight.
and that's everything I read this year!! god there was a lot of it. I liked a lot of the stuff I didn't bold, but also I hated some of it. please feel free to talk to me about any of it!!!

who’s your favorite robin? i feel like it’s jason but i’d still like to know why
-🦦
alright, this is actually ro lore. because- because because my fave robin is dick grayson *everybody gasps* and has been for YEARS.
i've never been a big batman lover, actually have had one-sided beef with him since elementary school. for some reason, i hated all of the men in the justice league except for the flash (could never hate barry allen my cutie patootie snuggle wuggle bear), and that was so amplified for bruce wayne.
partially bc i thought he was a loser like you don't even powers, you're not even a superhero fr, flop womp womp, yada yada yada. then. this girl i hated so. fucking. bad. for so. many. reasons. was the biggest batman fan ever. and when i was in 5th grade, she would always always always talk about how he was better than everyone else, and she would start arguments about it, and it was just so annoying.
so i already hated him, and she liked him, which means i hated him even more basically. also, i hated how many movies he has. pisses me off so bad to this day.
bc of that, i never got into batman or anything related to batman outside of the justice leage, and i never knew anything about him than his backstory. which i didn't even know that well bc for the longest time, i thought he got his powers from bats, and it turns out he's actually just like the rest of us. snooze.
i can't give you an exact timeline of how i discovered dick, but it probably went something like this:
saw nightwing - heart eyes - looks up nightwing on wiki - heart eyes - "first robin" - shocked emoji - connects teen titans dots - ignores everything about batman - hyper fixation passes - watches young justice - robin? - dick grayson? - heart eyes - NIGHTWING!!!!! - heart eyes
when i watched yj, my love for dick multipled by the thousands, and i already loved him bc i was a huge teen titans lover, and i always knew about batman and robin but my dumb ass was such a batman hater that i literally never connected the fucking dots.
my obsession with him is truly legendary, i had a nightwing theme for my spam acc on ig and twitter, all of my friends send me nightwing edits when they see them, and when my best dc loving irl wishes me a happy birthday, she calls me the "#1 nightwing stan" bc it's BAD for me.
but like i said, i wasn't well versed in batman lore until really recently, and that's where jason comes in. idk why when i read "first" robin i never once thought about there being any other ones, even though that more than implies that there are ??? but there's this guy ik who i went to middle school with who's also a fan of comics and superheroes like i am. and his fave character of all time is daredevil.
so one day, we're talking back and forth about which is better, dc or marvel. and he mentions that while he's not really a dc lover, they have one of the most goated characters. *insert jason todd*. and he's like, "yk who that is, right?" and i'm like, "pftt duh (no i don't)" but i'm never gonna let a man catch me slacking, so i do my due dilligence and start my research.
boom. here we are. with 2.5 blogs dedicated to jason who’s spent months living my head. dick will always have my heart, though. honestly, they both will.

Do you have a favorite jaydick couple dynamic?
Oh gosh how do you mean? The hell and joy of American comics and definitely ones as old as the Batman franchise is that there are very few tropes that are not in character with some canon line. For this reason I am a big fan of fic where they Have Strife and Get Over Their Differences in order to Make It Work, and I'm also a fan of them clicking naturally due to time and circumstance and understanding of Bruce that gives them a similar ground to stand on. I will admittedly always always go super hard for Jason having a very hard time getting over Dick Golden Boy Goldie Grayson. And honestly I think one of my favorite tropes with them is that they probably would not have hooked up or gotten together if Jason had not become who he is through death/resurrection. And I love them caring about each other and loving each other so much that sometimes they end up loving right through or past one another and need a smack with a wooden spoon named perspective, yk? Like Dick especially with the confidence of being the first, and Superman's fave, and the most Leadingest Leader; him having this "I know best" attitude that comes with being competent and having a good head on his shoulders and being right a lot of the time, it allows for when he messes up it's BIG, and Jason not fitting into a mold even Dick's ever adaptable mercurial brain can handle? That's just GOOD SHIT. I love it when they have to figure out how to work together because it's what they want, y'know? I just love them.

on the topic of batman and joker's -ahem- tension-filled fights, do you have any canon examples of their fights being explicitly (as explicit as canon batman media can get) being filled with physical tension?
Heh. I have many, many examples. Half my comic panel collection is Batman-on-Joker violence. I really enjoy their fights (hence my recent fic), even though some of them may barely qualify as that -- since Joker has a habit of putting up a little resistance and then letting Bruce beat the crap out of him.
There have been a lot of great ones over time, but I will limit myself to closest-to-explicit canon fights (moments that either textually or subtextually make romantic/sexual references). Putting the whole thing under the cut due to the numerous comic panels included.
♡ Batman: Endgame
Look. I still have no idea how they sneaked this past DC. Some of the panels are so... sexually suggestive it's unbelievable (I guess Mr. Capullo also thinks Batman tops and Joker is a power bottom, huh. Very valid of him.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...I can't look at these for too long, they make me go crazy.
♡ Batman: Death of the Family
This whole thing is filled to the brim with sexual innuendo, both textually and visually, but I’ll include just a few faves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, Bruce. Pulling your nemesis into a dance pose... holding hands during the fight... whispering into your nemesis’ year something that could undo them... Yeah, we all do that!
Tumblr media
♡ Batman: Hush
One of their most brutal fights, and one of the times Bruce came close to killing Joker. So. Obviously there's so much tension you can cut it with one of Joker's knives.
(Here you can also see Bruce’s choking kink, and more generally his thing for Joker’s neck popping up again, which... I swear to God, he’s obsessed. Even the alternate versions of him that kill Joker do it by snapping his neck (or tearing into it, for vampire!Batman). If you include that dream Clark had about it in Injustice, and then Bruce recently fantasizing about strangling Joker in Urban Legends... five times, just off the top of my head. Incredible. Wonder if a writer ever went ‘How about blunt force trauma for once??’ but then the spirit of Bruce Wayne reached from the fictional plane to go ‘Nah. Break that neck. Break it.’)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Detective Comics (1937) #781
For this example, I'd have to copy-paste the whole freaking issue. It’s one big date for them, packed full of flirting. The story is basically Bruce knowing Joker wanted a fight and indulging him (even teasing him) to get him to talk about a case. I fully recommend reading the whole thing, but I will include some of my favorite moments -- like the hair-pulling, and casually discussing case details while sitting on top of Joker or strangling is occuring:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #61
Features another one of my top ‘most unhinged Bruce moments’: beating up Joker while he’s helpless and in a straitjacket because Joker’s enjoying it -- Bruce doesn’t! He’s pleasuring Joker through pain for the case. All the other times he beats Joker up when Joker barely puts up a fight are... uh, well there might not always be a case, but Bruce doesn’t enjoy it, he swears!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Gotta say though. “It’s a two-player game with Joker-- always has been. Always will be.” This thought of Bruce’s comes dangerously close to self-awareness. And really, do you need to focus so much on Joker’s mouth?)
♡ Detective Comics (2011) #1
This is just such a... quintessential Batman/Joker fight. There isn’t specifically a panel that I can point to because I just love the whole thing; might not be as suggestive as others, but on the whole it’s maddening. The fight happening after Batman chased Joker, the way he always does. Joker stabbing Bruce, but not lethally on purpose; it being too fast for Bruce to counteract. Bruce saying “You’re done”, snarling “Anyone else would kill you” as he holds Joker by the throat, and Joker mockingly replying “That’s your problem.” This is it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
This one’s a classic (though technically not canon). Because if the whole fight taking place in the Tunnel of Love doesn’t drive it home, Joker spelling it out that Batman killing him is the climax of the fight (which he didn’t deliver) sure does. So does the famous panel of Batman and Joker lying there as if post-orgasm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Batman: Europa
Also not canon, but I mean. How can I not. Someone infects Batman and Joker with a virus and puts the cure inside the other one’s blood... All of it leading to the most homoerotic panels imaginable and pretty much the out-of-sight implication they fought and then Joker kissed Batman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
+ As a little extra, may I just include some absolutely insane gestures Bruce has pulled during fights with Joker... because they deeply haunt me, and now they shall haunt you too. They indicate Bruce having such a deep entitlement to Joker’s person, like him just knocking Joker out and dragging him away or carrying him like he’s cargo, like he’s a possession Bruce is taking back to the box he puts all his favorite toys in (Arkham). It all makes me want to howl at the moon a little.
♡ Injustice: Ground Zero #6
Grabbing an alternate vesion of your nemesis by the tongue is a perfectly normal thing to do. So is dragging him by his tie, while he’s helpless and tied-up, somewhere private where you can beat him up!
Tumblr media
♡ Batman: Cacophony
Shoving your fingers in the nose of your nemesis while teasing and flirting verbally, in the context of a fight, is also a perfectly reasonable thing to do! Just like saving his wretched life when he gets shot moments later, even though Jim Gordon is begging you to let him die...
Tumblr media
I have other examples of fights between them that I like, but they’re not as suggestive as these ones so I tried to cut back (or they’re from Batman: White Knight which I sadly dislike). And yet, this still got long.
But I hope you enjoyed, anon! Thank you for the opportunity to rant a bit.

I would absolutely love to hear about your faves 👀 Tell me everything you know 👀👀👀👀
AAAAAAVUYCDTIGCTUGCH YOU'RE A GEM THANK U FOR THIS 😭😭😭💚
this is super long bc I'm Completely Normal abt J'onn lmao whoops 😂
omfg where do I start. FIRST THINGS FIRST. HE. MY BELOVED. J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter, my favorite favorite of all time. no really it's coming up on 8 years and I still love him sm 😭 my one braincell may wander off to new fixations but I always circle back around to him sooner or later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have like 4747058 images of him ofc but these are SO good bc they tell a lot about him ??? he's cute, he's silly, he's dramatic, he's sassy, he's the heart of the Justice League twenty times over despite DC refusing to give him any time to shine (I'm going to fight them with my bare hands for that).
I've never posted this but it's been in my drafts for ever so I'll throw it in here 😂 I have so many thoughts about him omg
Tumblr media
ALSO I have a whole thing analyzing J'onn's moral compass & development through Justice League Animated, Unlimited, and some of the comics a while back so there's tHAT WHICH,,, was super good imo 👏
uuuuughghghghh I could talk about him forever 😭💚
When it comes to people Superman wouldn't want to fight, J'onn is top of that list, that's canon. He's OP as FUCK. He has most if not all Clark's powers, shapeshifting, intangibility, invisibility, phasing, telepathy, seriously his powers seem to never end ??? But he's terribly underutilized :") like I get it but come on DC,,,
J'onn is addicted to Oreos. no, really. in MM 98 issue 24 Blue Beetle and Booster Gold have this Super Funny Idea to hide all the Oreos from J'onn, and you gotta applaud the dedication to the prank bc they literally went out and bought ALL the Oreos from the ENTIRE vicinity of the JL Embassy building. J'onn proceeds to Hulk out and tear up half the city chasing them for it. It's revealed by Batman that Martians can get addicted to Oreos. At the end of the issue it turns out this is just a story J'onn is telling Diana but... he winks and asks if she's got any cookies, so it's up for debate if it's really just a story [I think there's some truth to it. bc it's very funny.]. And the Oreo thing comes up many times in many places including JLTAS 😂
He also likes sweet things in general !! he canonically drinks coffee with a TON of sugary shit to take off the bitter taste. I also made the hc that was the case for him just days before reading it in MM Identity and I'm very real for that 👏
J'onn is a cat person. One of his aliases is even an Italian street cat named Tommaso. And he has an orange cat named Double Stuff,,, of course 😂
however,,, he's totally a dragon nerd, he knows everything about dragons, he likes reptiles in general but dragons are his fav. He shapeshifts into draconic creatures all the time and he talks many times abt a specific species of moon nesting dragon called quonars. He also telepathically connected with an iguana once and it was a wholesome experience 🥺
J'onn lives in Colorado, in a suburb named Middleton, which is actually the name of a real ghost town! it's interesting that Denver is his preferred climate bc you can assume Mars was similar 👀
He is THE sass master. He goes toe to toe with Batman constantly. One of these days I'll just make a list of every sassy line he delivers in JLTAS but I think that would be a whole book by itself. There's a video of sassy moments from Batman: The Brave and the Bold that I watch 400 times a week. One of my favorite comic sass moments is when Batman expresses his annoyance at J'onn for leaving on the middle of an important meeting, which J'onn happily counters with a "you're so right, it would look bad on the League if someone just vanished at random all the time, huh Batman :)." he then also takes a crack at Bruce's lack of people skills. iconic.
He's also a silly little guy. The Batman 2007? J'onn OWNS the noir detective role, down to the cheesy old fashioned music. He also has like, a whole list of quotes he's just waiting to use when the time is right. He waited years to say "You're probably wondering why I've called you all here today." love him fr
J'onn is canonically kind of an adrenaline junkie. He loves driving, particularly an 87 Chevy Impala which he affectionately says "vibrates like a Chihuahua with a head cold." He once physically linked with an entire damaged spaceship to steer it out of danger and got carried away bc he was just having fun. He also said it was similar to the video games he plays with GL-- so he's canonically a gamer, too 😂👏
I 100% believe he's got anxiety or at LEAST separation anxiety [and that may be the case for the entire Martian race]. I already thought as much but then JLU issue 24 kinda confirmed it and it was devastating :") the League is taken over by Starro, J'onn is the only one who dodges the attack and he's left to fight his teammates which. is already awful for him. and it triggers flashbacks to a time on Mars when he was separated from his family in a nasty sandstorm. J'onn went pretty much feral with panic until he broke down and then forced himself to calm down enough to think of a plan. Meanwhile back with the League he's frantically trying not to panic again bc, while fire is a Martian's greatest weakness, "being alone is a Martian's greatest fear." I cried the whole time I read that issue and then I bought a copy LMAO. can DC stop putting him through the PTSD wringer for five seconds thanks
One short comic run J'onn spends the whole time being chased by the Martian god of fire, H'ronmeer, bc it turns out he was psychically keeping the souls of the entire Martian population tethered to the mortal realm. he's super powerful and HE'S GOING THROUGH IT. ALL THE TIME.
I don't have the context for either happenstance at this time, but J'onn has been both a Black and a White Lantern in comics. I have no idea what any of it means, either, I just know it's happened. I'll get there eventually. maybe. [I think he's dead for the Black Lantern thing so...probably...not...]
^^^ this is up there with the whole "J'onn was actually an advance agent for the invading Martian species but rather than let them use him as a weapon he essentially committed suicide after fighting the whole Justice League [beat them easily, it wasn't even a competition] and somehow this split his consciousness into like 4 different people" of comic runs that I really don't want to read [even though I own this one] :") help
I don't know what it is about forcefields but his brain just shuts off when he gets near one fr. Multiple times when there's a forcefield, EVEN IF HE KNOWS IT'S THERE, J'onn just yeets headfirst into it. He's just generally super impulsive tho ??? This guy is constantly jumping into action without a moment's thought. pls stop handing off the braincell to absolutely no one when there's danger, J'onn [he does not actually have the braincell at any given time. only Bruce has it. occasionally].
He totally enjoys starting shit. J'onn is Here for teammate drama. He once gave Batman absolutely what for and called him immature just bc J'onn was annoyed with his attitude. He sends people on League missions that will either bring out complete drama or make them find common ground. Though he says the contrary, J'onn is absolutely in the background of every team squabble with popcorn like Thor watching Tony and Cap argue. "You're all so petty. And tiny."
J'onn's name means "light to the light" and it's so poetic 😭😭 of COURSE he's the heart of the League. akdjfndckdnxkd
I'm going to stop there bc I could go on forever but I've held this ask hostage in my drafts long enough 😂😂 ENJOY THE RAMBLING THANK U FOR SENDING THIS ASK AAAA 💙

Golden Age of Comics Supervillain Mount Rushmore
So saw a few vids about Supervillain Mount Rushmore (The four best of the best ) and I wanted to do my own,Ill do 5 of these :Golden,Silver ,Bronze ,Modern and all time .Also feel free to share your own rushmore
Rules:Just doing DC and Marvel
Will limit the villains to the era they appear in
First the Golden era(1938 -1956 )
Will give 12 contenders
Joker
Catwoman
Lex Luthor
Mr Mxyzptlk
Red Skull
Penguin
Vandal Savage
Solomon Grundy
Cheetah
Two Face
Riddler
Scarecrow
My runners up
For me Cheetah ,Riddler ,and Scarecrow are out immediately .I dont know Cheetah that well,Riddler while a personal fave didnt hit his heyday till the silver age and poor Scarecrow is good but he's kind of always a brideasmaid never a bride
I love Vandal Savage buuuuuuut hes very niche, not to many people know him
By contrast people know Grundy (Hes in the Crash Test Dummys Superman Song afterall )and he is a personal fave but I cant put him as one of the best
Catwoman could easily take a spot ,she is iconic and is a fave....But her allegiences kind of shift ,she flip flops from villain to hero to anti hero a LOT
Two Face is one of Batmans greatest foes ,but I dunno,I personally dont see him on the rushmore
Penguin .....Is so close to being on the rushmore .Hes one of the most iconic villains ever.......But by a hair I chose someone else
My Golden Age Villain rushmore
Mr Mxyzptlk-This might be controvercial but this is a golden age rushmore, and I strongly felt we need a comedic villain on the Rushmore .This 5th dimensional imp I feel is a perfect example of the Golden Age ,and he is a personal fave of mine . It was really between him and Penguin....And I just think Mxy represents the Golden Age more
Tumblr media
Red Skull:Big part of the Golden Age :Nazi fighting ,and of the Nazi villains in comics he is the most iconic .He is Marvels first real iconic villain and as a supervillain he is one of few who just....Gets under my skin, being just a nasty pure evil son of a bitch
Tumblr media
Lex Luthor:My personal favorite supervillain ,the evil genius who always battles Superman .Over the many decades Luthor has evolved from being criminal genius,a mad scientist to representing corporate and political evil, but remains consistant is his envy and hatred of the man of steel ,the man who with his great intelect COULD save the world, but his petty hatred and ego make him a villain
Tumblr media
Joker:The easiest pick .Joker has kind of become the most iconic villain in comics .He is the most versetile from goofy prankster to maniacal psychopath .He has an amazing design and he plays off Batman superbly ,the grinning colorful villain to the dark grim hero
Tumblr media
So my Golden Age Villain Rushmore is Mr Mxyzptlk,Red Skull ,Lex Luthor and Joker
Who is your golden Age villain rushmore
@themousefromfantasyland @the-blue-fairie @theancientvaleofsoulmaking @countesspetofi @barbossas-wench @filmcityworld1 @ariel-seagull-wings @amalthea9 @princesssarisa @piterelizabethdevries

Who is Jon Kent? And why do you like him? (Is it rude to ask that? I just want to know)
Hi Nonnie! Oh dw it's not rude to ask at all!! Always happy to rant about Jon.
So Jon Kent(full name Jonathan Samuel Kent) is the son of Superman and Lois Lane. He is currently Superman, and shares the title with his dad Clark, and Kong Kenan. He's 17-18 years old and he's my precious blorbo ;_;
Okay reasons I like him:
I relate to his experience of being bisexual and his journey with it: So Jon's bi, the news articles about a 'queer superman' is what made me read his comics because I was just so happy and intrigued by it. Jon's bisexuality isn't a central focus, he doesn't have any denial about it, or have some moment where it clicks and he has a crisis about it. Jon's very casual about it, he knows he's bi. He's more scared about how people will perceive it rather than have any personal difficulties with it. And that realy resonated with me because when I figured out I was bi/pan/queer something, I didn't panic, I didn't go "oh no no no", I just went "huh, okay" and existed like that. A lot of queer characters are about queer pain, so seeing Jon just be bisexual and that being the least of his worries was nice to see.
He always tries his best to learn and be better: Jon never assumes that he's got the solutions, or that he's got a sure-fire way of doing things. He's constantly asking people for guidance, letting others explain their POV and later, he gives his viewpoint. He only goes "no fuck you" when he's got all the information required. Like he's so careful, and he learns on his own and from people around him. - So he's like, a superpowered near god-like being. But his main mentor is Nightwing- a regular human vigilante. He goes to him to learn to contain his powers & be better at investigating. - His first major storyline is him helping save a country from a dictator, and the movement was first led by his boyfriend, Jay Nakamura. Jon joins later. So he always lets Jay take the lead on it because Jay has told him Superman can't fix everything and he should be about empowering people rather than coming down on people like he knows everything. - His go-to for advice isn't Clark Kent, the og Superman, but his mom- Lois Lane who's an expert journalist. His closest, most trusted circles are all regular non-powered people who influence the world in their own way.
He's accidentally funny as fuck: Like he doesn't TRY to make jokes, but he says and does shit that just makes me laugh at him. Eg: He's always talking about how he 'listens to all perspectives and doesn't start fighting unless he's heard all side'. BUT. His one exception, is BATMAN. And this is because Batman once kind of suggested "hey your boyfriend is shady as fuck I think he's part of a terrorist organization can you check that?" and JON LOSES IT. Ever since then, he's had some petty ass grudge against Batman. Which is horrible because Batman is practically his uncle and family. This goes to the point he gives LEX LUTHOR a chance over Batman. Also, he really, really tries to be all calm and collected and rational but so far I think he's kidnapped a senator, gotten jailed, barged into a foreign president's home, barged into Lex's place and with like minimal evidence went 'Idk wtf you did wrong or why or how- but I know it's you'
He's annoying: He mastered chess in 8 seconds, he knows all the rules, he's good enough to beat Lex Luthor, considered the smartest man on the planet. But just to piss off Lex, he acts all innocent WHILE BEATING HIM and goes "see? My horsey took your piece". Like said 'horsey' as if he doesn't know tf a Knight is. Also literally any time he talks about Batman, he says the most sarcastic, dry shit ever. "Anger issues stuffed into a bat suit" is my personal fave.
He's a sweetheart!!! A kid called him a clown and he just, played along with it. He gave his boyfriend a ring that can make him fly. He heats up his mom's coffee in secret when she's swamped with work and helps his grandma bake pie! In his free time he helps replant forests ;_;
His daddy issues compel me: Okay so Jon.....to succinctly put- got trapped in an alternate universe where he was basically tortured by an AU version of his dad for about half a decade. When he returned, due to space-time shenanigans, 6 yrs for him was 3 weeks in his original world. His main tormentor wore his dad's face and he missed out on all his childhood. People were waiting for a 10 yr old version of him but he's 17-18 and people have a hard time digesting that. Jon suppresses the crap out of his issues. He never talks about it. The one time he does, he's extremely vague. He's hurt by his father not giving him the same kind of attention, by his parents so clearly missing the old him, but he never complains about it. Instead, he tries to fit around their expectations which is heartbreaking. Like reading about it is very fun for me.
He's just really fun to read about idk if my Jon propaganda is working XDXD

Orm Marius ultimate recommended reading guide by yours truly, ormymarius. I’ll try to make this as less confusing as possible because I know comics can be confusing.
Tumblr media
[click read more below]
Starting off with his more recent origin:
Aquaman #0 (2011)
(literal baby Orm is shown and Vulko’s beef with Orm, this is important for throne of atlantis)
Throne of Atlantis - this arc is the best to understand Orm in recent comics
Aquaman #14
Justice League (2011) #15
Aquaman #15
Justice League #16
Justice League #17
Or you can check out War for the Throne, it has all of Throne of Atlantis in there.
After Throne of Atlantis, I recommend:
Aquaman (2011) #19
Aquaman #23.2
(another major story for Orm, this is where Erin and Tommy show up)
Aquaman #25
(at the end, Orm & Erin’s story is sort of continued. You will notice that Rise of the Seven Seas is told where you should go next. It was a canceled event because GJ never wrote it. However, some of it was incorporated into the Aquaman movie)
Aquaman #36
(this explains Orm’s childhood)
Orm was supposed to be included in some more issues but GJ was going to use him in Rise of the Seven Seas, and well… he prevented Orm from being utilized. Rip to New 52 Orm. Onwards we go.
Orm is back from limbo in Rebirth Aquaman comics, finally. For better or for worse, you decide.
Mera: Queen of Atlantis #1-6
(note: Rebirth Orm is not my fave and sometimes he’s considered ooc to me)
Justice League/Aquaman Drowned Earth
Ocean Master: Year of the Villain
(probably my all time favorite Orm story)
Aquaman (2016) #57-#59, #61, #64, #65
(I don’t particularly like how Orm is written in these issues and you don’t have to read it if you don’t want to, it’s not necessary but I’ll still recommend it…)
Aquaman 80th anniversary
(the 80th anniversary story with Orm is another fave Orm story of mine)
Aquamen #1, #2, #3, #6
(Aquamen is really messy and you can read it if you want but Orm is not really in it. I actually have no idea what his motivation was, that’s how messy it is lol)
Orm has had many origin changes, in silver age he was completely human but still the half-brother of Arthur.
Some of my fave appearances of him in Aquaman Vol. 1:
Aquaman #29
(Orm’s first appearance in comics ever)
Aquaman #32
Aquaman #35
(this is Manta’s first appearance in comics ever, Manta and Orm are hilarious in here)
Aquaman #37
Aquaman #49-51
Some other fave appearances of him in this era:
Action Comics #517-520
Next we have Aquaman vol. 2. The 1986 miniseries of Aquaman. It’s probably my all time favorite Aquaman story with Orm. If you like Aquaman but haven’t read this story… what are you even doing??
Aquaman (1986) #1-4
After this we have 90s Orm. I don’t like a lot of him so this is going to be brief sorry. To me, he’s more one-dimensional than silver age Orm was. I do like the Neron thing with his trident though. In this origin, he’s human/homo magi/atlantean.
Aquaman time and tide #3-4
Aquaman vol 5. #19-20
Aquaman vol 5. #66-69
In Aquaman vol 6 I don’t really have an opinion on Orm, he’s just there. But he’s still one-dimensional as he was in the 90s.
Aquaman vol 6. #26-27
Aquaman vol 6. #37
Next is Sword of Atlantis. I’ll be honest, I haven’t read most of this because it’s… eh. One day I will. But I’ll include some of the Orm appearances for you all.
Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #44-45
Honorable mentions:
Batman and the Justice League manga vol. 1, 2, & 3
(this is basically an au that takes place after Throne of Atlantis but if Orm didn’t meet Erin & Tommy, I love it)
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special #1 (2023)
(if you like dceu Orm, he has a story in here explaining what happened to him between the first movie and the second movie)
So that’s my reading guide for Orm. If anything is confusing for you, let me know and I’ll do my best to help. Get reading! <3

omg! i wanna do a few:
top 5 dc characters!
top 5 comic series!
top 5 animals!
OMG hi ella!!! 🫶 OH THESE ARE HARD
Top 5 dc characters (omg I feel bad ranking them)
Duke Thomas - who’s surprised 😭 no but he’s without a doubt my fave bat. i think there are just so many inspiring things about him, and he represents the aspect of comics I love most - stepping up and doing what’s right even when all odds are against you
Carol Ferris - I used to talk about her 24/7 when I was heavy in my GL phase, but I never stopped loving her. I love that she’s deeply flawed and angry and passionate, and she gets to be messy. Also she influenced me to be more comfortable expressing myself femininely which was hard as a brown girl ngl anyways carol <333
Ollie Queen - LMAO idk why but I feel so cliche putting him, but he’s my favorite Arrow and he always has been. I relate to him a lot. He’s really introverted, in his own head despite being is outspoken, he loves nature, cares deeply, and he isolates when he’s sad. I also like his very black-and-white thinking, esp when it gets challenged. live laugh love ollie queen
Talia Al Ghul - I won’t say much about her lmao bc talia stans are like sharks here, but she is also very important to me. Like you ever get that character that just seizes your heart???? Yeah that’s Talia for me 🥺 i don’t post abt her often either, but i love her sm
Khalid Nassour - it’s hell being his fan, but i’ll do it anyways 😭 so Khalid is rlly interesting bc i read his “cool” appearances first then read Dr Fate 2015 where he was more of an annoying 22 yr old. And it was so satisfying watching him grow from someone who was more narrow-minded and whitewashed to an intelligent, capable, and enlightened person. I really enjoy his character’s spin on what fate means in regards to one’s identity, heritage, lifestyle, and faith.
Top 5 comic series (THIS IS ALSO HARD OMG)
Day of Vengeance - this is the one currently living rent free in my head rn bc it’s so FUNNY and random, but also a really interesting storyline in regards to magic in the DCU. It’s just so enjoyable watching this group of mystics handle the hugest threat ever and barely get along, and they’re all weird, and then Lori joins and she’s like the group teenager and it’s so funny
We Are Robin - I honestly wish it was longer ngl but I really wanted to see more of the group together and their stories, especially Izzy and Dre. The premise and duration of this story is SO dear to me bc ofc Duke, but also I love watching kids band together against authorities bc they love their city sm.
Batman: Son of the Demon - as a Talia and sometimes Brutalia fan, how can I not 😭 It’s so sad and actually heartwrenching how happiness was so close to them but taken away, and how much Bruce and Talia sacrificed for each other because they are both loving people, they just love in the wrong way
Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters - perfect Ollie. Perfect depiction of his mind. Really good storytelling. SHADOOOOO she served cunt and dc didn’t like that so they ruined her. Her initial appearance was so charming i literally made it my header. I like ethical dilemmas and the one in this story is so good. Also shoutout to Eddie fr
Green Lantern: Blackest Night - OKAY THIS IS THE ONE I WAS AFRAID OF SHARING 😭 I’m SORRY i love this for so many reasons, nostalgia mostly bc I re-read it over and over again at the peak of my hal obsession era idk why, I like the giant white entity, I like when all the Corps leaders have to team up and they’re all side-eyeing each other sm, and I also love when random heroes get involved and help save the day like Mera, Ray, Barry, Diana, Grant, watching them all try to survive it while battling grief in front of them. It is NOT THE BEST GL COMIC EVER but it’s one of my faves.
