Photographer Frank Rinehart took this magnificent photo of Dustmaker, aka Pete Mitchell of the Ponca tribe. Rinehart spent a lot of time photographing the Native American people and their way of life. He wanted to capture their stories and each individual personality through his photos. The goal was for non-indigenous people to get a glimpse into the their lives and begin to understand them. This photo was taken in 1898, during the Omaha Indian Congress in Nebraska, which was the biggest gathering of Native American tribes of its kind.

Reading the Wikipedia articles of most Ptolemaic kings, there's a note right at the beginning: "Numbering the Ptolemies is a modern convention. Older sources may give a number one higher or lower. The most reliable way of determining which Ptolemy is being referred to in any given case is by epithet (e.g. "Philopator")".

I did not find a similar note in articles about the Argeads, Seleucids, or any other Hellenistic dynasty, for that matter, even if their members generally had epithets. This made me look into the list of Ancient Macedonian monarchs, as it occured to me that, besides Alexander the Great, I could not name a single pre-Alexander monarch with an epithet! The only ones I could find were Alexander I the Philhellene and Amyntas II the Little.

Hellenistic monarchs seem to have had all sorts of colorful epithets - Soter, Nicator, Epiphanes, Euergetes, Philopator. Even Macedonian kings had them, but most post-Alexander - Poliorketes, Gonatas, Keraunos. Is there a reason why the Macedonian monarchs from the Argead dynasty do not generally have epithets for which they are known?

Tl;dr answer: as the world widened and certain names became increasingly repetitive in ruling families, epithets were an easy way to separate them. The “numbering system” is recent and largely European. It was retrofitted to the medieval and ancient worlds when writing histories about these eras (and sometimes non-European regions too, such as Japan and China).

Epithets, or “nicknames,” became useful when identifying individuals outside their usual sphere of reference, especially if there might be more than one famous person from (say) Macedon named “Alexandros.”

Thus we get the most famous Alexander (III) Magnus/Megalexandros [the Great]/Alexandros ho Anikētos [the Undefeated], but also Alexandros (I) ho Philhellenas [the Philhellene]/Alexandros ho Khruseos [the Golden]. The first name listed for each is the one used by posterity, the latter was the name used in their own lifetime. So no, Alexander III was not called “the Great” until a while after his death. 😉

Identifying Individuals in Ancient Greece

We find a two- or three-tiered identification system:

Given Name

Father’s name in the genitive = [son/daughter] of ____ (patronymic)

Place of origin (also in the genitive = “of ____”)

The first two are all-but-universal, and the third is a common addition, but may be omitted in cases where the place of origin can be assumed. “Place of origin,” however, can vary. It may be a city-state/nation, or within a city-state, the phratry (clan) or tribe.

So, if you were to travel from, say, Eretria (on Euboia Island) to Athens, you’d identify yourself: Myron Apollodorou Eretrias = Myron, son of Apollodoros, of Eretria. You wouldn’t get specific about a phratry because you’re not home. Nobody cares.

Just like when I travel to Greece, I rarely say, “I’m from Omaha.” I usually just say, “I’m from the States,” and if they ask which state, I add “Nebraska”—which solicits confused looks. LOL If I were to begin with “I’m from Omaha,” they’d really be confused! It’s only inside the US that I say I’m from Omaha, Nebraska. Inside Omaha, I may give my neighborhood. So that’s a good referent as to how specific they might get, and under what circumstances.

Another fun fact: it was typical (if not absolute) for the first son to be named for his paternal grandfather, the second for his maternal grandfather, and then by various other male relatives. So, for instance, Perdikkas III, the first of Amyntas III’s sons to have a son, named the boy Amyntas. Ergo, Philip named Alexander for his elder brother, who didn’t live long enough to marry and procreate. Yet, again, it’s not absolute (unlike in Greece today); e.g., Demosthenes, son of Demosthenes; Aristobulos, son of Aristobulos … Alexander (IV), son of Alexander (III).

As for women, they’re identified by father or husband (or son or brother). It’s much rarer to see a place identifier, in part because women were assumed not to travel much. We get exceptions: the famous Aspasia, Perikles’s mistress, was identified (in Athens) as “from Miletos.” Also, in royal marriages. So, Olympias was daughter of Neoptolomos, of the Molossoi (ruling clan of Epiros): Olympias Neoptolomou Molossou.

When we get to these upper-class families, with their clan designations, we get closer to what, today, we’d call a “surname.”

Athens had several aristocratic clans, but the most famous/notorious were the Alkmeonidai, of which Kleisthenes, Perikles, Alkibiades, and Plato were all members (some via their mothers). Another Athenian example were the Philaidai (Miltiades and Kimon).

These aristocratic families took their name from a mythical forefather: e.g., Alkmaion, great-grandson of Nestor (yes, from the Iliad). This pattern was true all over Greece, not just Athens. These are largely the descendants of the old kings (basileis) and nobles (aristokratoi) of the Greek dark age/archaic age (e.g., Late Iron Age).

But in some areas, royal families persisted, such as Epiros, Macedon, and Sparta, who also kept the royal clan designation: Molossoi (Epiros), Temenidai (Macedon), Agiadai and Eurypontidai (Sparta). Thessaly’s main cities also has a semi-ruling royal family, such as the Aleuadai of Larissa, traditional allies of the Macedonian royal house.

While you’ll often see me refer to the Macedonian royal family as “Argeads,”* the clan name they’d have used was “Temenidai,” as they believed themselves to be descendants of Herakles (and thus, Zeus) through his great-great-grandson Temenos. Outside Macedonia, however, they’d use “Makedonon” (of Macedon). We find Alexander referred to on an ancient Roman bust (the Azara Herm) as Alexandros Philippou Makedonon

Non-royal Macedonians would use Patronymics (+ origin place), so Hephaistion is identified in Arrian as Hephaistion Amyntoros Pellais (Hephaistion, son of Amyntor, of Pella). Krateros, however, is identified only by his patronymic in our texts (the most common pattern), so we’re less clear on where he was from: Krateros Alexandrou (Orestidis?).

In the pre-Philip/Alexander era, it’s usually possible to untangle Macedonian kings by patronymic if employed, but even that doesn’t always work. The first Alexandros (I) was the son of an Amyntas and so was the second, Philip’s older brother. Fortunately, we find them referenced in such a way that we usually know who’s meant.

Usually.

Yet take the fragment from Anaximines (FGrH 72 F 4) that says simply “Alexandros” created the Pezhetairoi (Foot Companions).

Um… WHICH ONE?! Arguments have been made for Alexander I (Wrightson), Alexander II (Greenwalt), and Alexander III (various).

Welcome to the Wild, Wild West of ancient history. We write entire articles arguing “which Alexander” because the ancient sources didn’t identify him beyond a single name.

In any case, once Macedonia emerged onto the “world stage,” so to speak, it became critical to find better ways to identify the various Successor kings (Diadochi) of the Hellenistic era. All the more so as they frequently reused names (Ptolemies) or alternated (Seleukos/Antiochos). Ptolemy, son of Ptolemy, son of Ptolemy isn’t very meaningful! Epithets became an easy way to identify which Ptolemy.

* “Argead” is a modern usage for reasons I won’t go into or it’s Rabbit Hole Time about the putative Greekness (from Argos) of the Macedonian royal family. Suffice to say Alexander would be mightily puzzled to be called an Argead.

The Sacred Sun Dance ☀️ The Sun Dance is the most sacred ritual of Plains Indians, a ceremony of renewal and cleansing for the tribe and the earth. Primarily male dancers—but on rare occasions women too—perform this ritual of regeneration, healing and self-sacrifice for the good of one’s family and tribe. But, in some tribes, such as the Blackfeet, the ceremony is led by a medicine woman. It has been practiced primarily by tribes in the Upper Plains and Rocky Mountain, especially the Arapaho, Arikara, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Crow, Gros Ventre, Hidatsa, Sioux, Plains Cree, Plains Ojibway, Omaha, Ponca, Ute, Shoshone, Kiowa, and Blackfoot tribes. Usually the ceremony was practiced at the summer solstice, the time of longest daylight and lasts for four to eight days. Typically, the Sun Dance is a grueling ordeal, that includes a spiritual and physical test of pain and sacrifice.

a timeline of major events leading up to and following the mormon rebellion

1839- the mormons, fleeing missouri, start their own super special theocratic city state of nauvoo

july 1844- having a super special theocratic city state culminates in its mayor-prophet-general being murdered

still 1844- after a struggle between different factions over succession, brigham young becomes the new president of the church and prophet. planning starts as to Where To Go and How

1846- the trip to utah starts and they winter in omaha

1847- HELL YEAH DESERET FOREVER BABY! time to establish a theocracy in the desert in that area that mexico owns on paper, but really, GOD owns it ;)

february 1848- control of deseret is officially transferred to the united states in the aftermath of the mexican american war

later 1848- young and his associates draft a petition to the US government for a territorial government headed by himself and others. they don't end up submitting it to the united states government, though, because of fears that a territorial government would not give them enough freedom. they will wait it out for either statehood or independence

1849- the government is declared as "the free and independent state of deseret" to remain so until the united states admits them as a state. which especially pre civil war would have given them a TON of leeway over what they're allowed to do. like keep a lot of their We're a Desert Theocracy With a Governor-President-Prophet in Charge!

1850- the us government doesn't care about your desert theocracy or the name you want to give it. you're the territory of utah and you're gonna LIKE IT! we'll let you keep your guy as governor though. i guess

1850-1851- non-mormons traveling to oregon and california winter in utah and have a Very Bad Time. people are not nice to them. the court system is BAD and the systems are rigged against the federal officers brought in to do these jobs.

brigham young tries to rally the different native american tribes in the region to his cause, because mormon theology teaches that they're also lost israelites. but he didn't consider any of their actual motivations or try to cater to those so beyond a few conversions and some fair weather friends who will work with anyone for the most money, he gets No Alliances TM

1852- polygamy is PUBLIC now! orson pratt let the rest of the world know that it's a thing we do and now we have to publicly defend it! ruh roh

1856- HEYOOO WE'RE DOING RELIGIOUS REVIVAL! right here! right now! you're confessing to sins! and you're confessing to sins! and YOU'RE confessing to sins! ones you probably didn't commit! heyooo come get your charismatic revivalism. time to atone for your sins with blood and then you'll get into heaven!

there were quite a few different recorded murders of mormons trying to leave at this time, including the famous parrish murders, where a father and one of his sons were killed trying to leave the territory. the other son escaped and ran to his uncle's, where he had to pretend nothing happened.

1857- mr. young you have been removed as governor of this territory, effective immediately.

brigham young: actually we are our OWN country none shall pass through our lands without a permit and we totally have talked to all of the native american tribes and they all will do exactly as i ask and i only hold them off as a gesture of goodwill ;) (this is not accurate! and we all know that!)

september 1857- this was the mountain meadows massacre. i'm not going to try to make a joke about the mountain meadows massacre because from around a hundred and twenty people traveling from arkansas to oregon were murder in cold blood AFTER they surrendered to the mormon militia. there isn't a single joke to be made here, and this event was covered up in various forms for a very long time.

the mormon militia burns and destroys US military supplies as the military escort comes with the new governor.

the church forces residents of the north and salt lake city to relocate south with the intention of destroying the settlements to make a statement. while they don't end up following through with the plan to destroy these homes, the forced relocation still happens.

when the military and the new governor arrives, the new governor decides to be The Lamest Stooge to Ever Lame. and basically lets brigham young tell him what to do and what to say, continuing a very similar line of power to what was already there. not to mention the presidential pardon that young and all involved got for most of the Illegal Dealings that they participated in that are known at the time.

the military isn't able to stay very long because the president has decided that accepting the "new governor" is basically enough, and with the looming threat of a proper civil war (which is just on the cusp of breaking out) there's not enough resources to expend on utah.

a judge tries very hard to uncover the truth of what happened at mountain meadows, which has been blamed entirely on native americans (only a few of which participated, all as free agents separate from a tribal affiliation) and he's not able to make things happen before the military is entirely recalled and along with that, any authority he had to make these things happen.

he DOES go on to help found nevada and take a large swath of territory out of brigham young's gaping maw, though, so that's. something.

i need to do more research from some additional sources but like. jesus CHRIST the... everything here. it's just so much

1877- brigham young finally drops dead and loosens his hold on the territory of utah

Turkish Traces in North America...

The crescent-star leather jacket with Turkish images from 1850 belonging to the Omaha Indian tribe is exhibited today at the Omaha Painting Museum (Joslyn Art Museum / Omaha - USA).

(This jacket was bought from the Omaha Indians by Lucien Fontenalla, one of the leading French merchants of the time, who was also the sister of one of the Indian chiefs, “Big Elk” (Big Elk), who died in 1855, when he was attacked by the Sioux. . )

Just randomly learning about animal folklore, while listening to Epic The Musical, and I.

Ough. Owls in native American lore: Many tribes across the country not only believe that owls have a correlation to death, but also the afterlife. Tribes such as the Lakota, Omaha, Cheyenne, Fox, Ojibwa, Menominee, Cherokee, and Creek consider owls to be either an embodied spirit of the dead or associated with a spirit in some way. — and then I have like, Garrett with being a burrowing owl, it just. Seemingly works?? I mean like. With what the burrowing owl means, spiritually: watcher of the dark (in Native American lore). I just. Yeah!!!

Just learned about Minnesota's state bird(The Loon), and especially the meaning(since well. FNAF movie takes place in Minnesota): A legend says that to see a Loon means a dream will come true or a wish will be answered / The loon symbolizes the wildness of the north—wildness that many of us, trapped in an ever-more-urbanized society, long for from the depths of our souls.

But the main thing i wanted to talk about was like. Bears. Bears in native American lore that is: The Native Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality courage and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship. The bear is also self-contained and strong-willed in nature. / Bears are symbols of wisdom: often featured as guardians, teachers, leaders, and healers in Native origin stories, myths, and legends. Known for their ability to keep fighting, even when they are wounded, bears are closely tied to healing and medicine. Many believed that bears were able to heal their own wounds.

'Following that drum': Oscar-nominated Osage composer Scott George heads to Academy Awards

Although he already had composed a half-dozen songs, George said crafting the "Killers of the Flower Moon" coda presented a special challenge. Starting in 2000 with a musical homage to one of his dearest mentors and adoptive father, the late Morris Lookout, the singer had primarily created honor songs in tribute to different people, either out of love or by request. And he had mostly composed them in the Ponca language, which is similar to the languages of the Osage, Omaha, Kaw and Quapaw tribes and often used in powwow and dance songs. Still, he and fellow singer Vann Bighorse, then the director of the Osage Nation Language Department, accepted the challenge, each composing an original Osage-language song for the movie. George kept his song simple, but with a message he hoped would help his people heal after the movie's vital but painful revisting of such a tragic time in Osage history. "'Wahzhazhe' is what we call ourselves now … and I'm asking my people to stand up. I want them to stand up with the understanding that God brought us all through that, and we're here today because of that. And we should be thankful," George said, his voice thickening with emotion.

Hagging Out 🧺 When Life Takes Away Your Pears ...

When this month's Hagging Out theme was announced, I had no idea what I wanted to do for it at first. But then my Husband and I were driving back from WalMart one day and I spied a Pear Tree in someone's front yard and I was hooked on the idea of doing something with Pears; I thought maybe a nice Tart, or something that I hadn’t tried before.

There was a Pear tree out at my own family’s old farm, but going out there could cause some problems- especially since I’ve estranged myself from my family. There was a Pear Tree out at my Husband's old family farm that I knew I could harvest from instead, however. So I kept bothering him to take me out there- and I almost got to on our way back from the Music Festival ... But it just never worked out ... And it never worked out ... And it never worked out; when it finally did, we got all the way out there only to discover that not only was the farm an absolute wreck, but this year's double late Spring frost had killed all the blossoms.

No Pears for me. But I didn’t leave empty handed, however. And what did I get lucky and accidentally stumble across out there? The fact that my Husband's family farm also had a giant Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) tree on the property, right next to the driveway; he hated the thing and couldn't understand why I got so giddy about it (though to be fair, if it weren't for @goadthings / @pagan-stitches posting about their own Walnut adventures, I'd've very likely never known or understood).

So what do you do when Hagging Out's approaching quickly and life takes away your Pears? You make Black Walnut Pie ... Well ... Except I ran into a bit of an issue with that, actually; after all the crushing, and hammering, and digging that I did, in the end I wound up with only half a cup of Black Walnut meat- a far cry from the full 1 cup that I actually needed for the Pie.

When my husband took me out to the lake to do my Offerings on his birthday, however, he stumbled across an absolute gold mine of Bur Oak (Quercus Macrocarpa) Acorns; Bur Oak Acorns in particular have been used as a food and medicine source by the Ponca (Ppáⁿkka), Omaha (Umoⁿhoⁿ), Cheyenne, Winnebago (Hochungra), Dakota (Dakhóta) and Lakota (Lakȟóta), Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), Menominee (Omǣqnomenēwak), Ojibwa (Ojibwe) and Chippewa (Baawiting Anishinaabeg), and Pawnee (Chatiks si chatiks) tribes for centuries. So I decided to throw those into the pie, too (while still leaving my Husband enough to plant- an easy feat since he brought a whole Pie Plate home).

After processing the Acorns, however ... The texture was wrong. I realized it wouldn't really work like I wanted it to. I didn't nix the plan, though, because I still wanted to use the Acorn meat; I didn’t process them for nothing, after all ... But it did take me far longer than it should have to remember that I literally live right beneath four huge old growth Pecan Trees and have a never ending stream of the dang things. So I opted to make up the other half cup's difference with some of the remainder of last year's dried Pecan harvest since this year's hadn't started dropping yet.

My best friend @justletmebeokay formally dubbed the Pie the "Oklahoma Hobbit" when they saw how much nonsense I was putting into it ... But lemme tell you ... It fits. In fact, I can't think of anything else, after putting in all that effort and eating the thing finally, that could possibly fit it more.

I wound up roughly grinding the Acorn meat into chunks and soaked them for 2 days, draining off the water and replacing it every day to remove the tannins as guides instructed. But I left the Black Walnut and Pecan meat as it came out of the shell (which was pretty hapdash; I'm not great at nut cracking, as I discovered, ha. And since Pecans are significantly easier to crack than Black Walnuts ... Well, you can imagine how that game played out). Then I just refrigerated it until I needed it.

The recipe wanted me to put the nuts over the bottom of the crust, then pour the filling in. So I sprinkled over the Pecans and Black Walnuts- but the Acorn Meat got put into the filling itself and poured over. Then it all got baked at 375°f for roughly an hour, and cooled for another 2 or 3 before I got too impatient and couldn't wait another moment longer.

The Black Walnut meat is so creamy and melts in your mouth. The Burk Oak Acorn meat is soft, but has a nice texture to it that you'd expect to be kinda gritty but just kinda mushes well instead. And the Pecan gives it a nice crunch you didn't know it needed until you got it. And between the Lemon Juice, Brown Sugar, and Maple Syrup, and all the nuts? Somehow the thing comes out with a hint of ... Almost a slight Bourbon flavor that's just ... Perfect- if confusing.

There's a lot going on flavor wise and texturally, but absolutely none of it is overwhelming or overpowers any other element of the Pie ... It's just perfect. And it's hilarious to me because honestly? I hate Nuts, and I hate Pies ... I shouldn't've liked this. But yet I do. And if it weren't so much effort? I'd probably make this a regular thing.

Considering it took me a whole week to gather and make, though ... I think I'm ok with it just being a @msgraveyarddirt / @graveyarddirt special for Hagging Out 🤣

Jazz guitarist Calvin Keys is a legend among soul-jazz-funk fans for both his work as a session & touring musician and for the catalog of classic releases under his own name. Key’s playing style is lean & muscular and his unique phrasing balances sophisticated jazz harmonics with funky R&B & soul grooves. Since the 1960s Calvin Keys has performed/recorded with renowned artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Ray Charles, Pharoah Sanders and Joe Henderson. He is also a mentor to young talent, offers private lessons, and is a frequent teacher at the yearly happening ‘Jazz Camp West’.

Calvin Keys was born in 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska. His first musical influence was his father Otis, a well-known drummer in the city’s music scene…he passed the music bug on to Calvin, who picked up the guitar early. Keys landed his first notable gig as a member of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson’s band when he was 17 and then went on to play with Preston Love (of the Count Basie Orchestra). Later on, he would also join The Jimmy Smith Trio and then worked through the rest of the 1960’s with legends such as Jimmy McGriff, Richard “Groove” Holmes and Brother Jack McDuff.

After moving to Los Angeles in the 1970’s, he signed to Gene Russell’s now-legendary Black Jazz label where he cut his first two albums: Shawn-Neeq (1971) & Proceed with Caution (1974). Next to his own output on Black Jazz Records, Calvin Keys also did session work for the label and played on several of its hit records. At this point in time Keys also auditioned for the Ray Charles Orchestra…his unique phrasing and his ability to balance sophisticated jazz harmonics with tough R&B and soul grooves were showcased nightly in Charles’ band. Before relocating to San Francisco in 1975, he also played on Billy Brooks’ jazz-funk classic ‘Windows of the Mind’ (1974) and focused on more live and session work. Keys then joined Ahmad Jamal’s group and spent close to a decade with the pianist, touring the globe and recording six albums with him.

The 1980’s and 1990’s also proved similarly fruitful for Calvin Keys…he was a ‘first-call’ studio & live sideman and amassed massive credits for touring with all-stars from the likes of Tony Bennett, Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Stitt. He released two more fantastic solo albums: Full Court Press (1985) & Maria’s First (1985), this time on Olive Branch Records. In 1991 he was featured on the recordings for the original score of the film ‘Dying Young’ composed by James Newton Howard. Next to all of this, his session and live work with his own trio continued at a relentless pace. He settled down in the Bay area and played a multitude of gigs throughout the 1990’s.

After being sidelined in 1997 by heart surgery, Calvin Keys entered the new millennium with a bang! He released five widely acclaimed Jazz-charting albums & worked with major players from the likes of Taj Mahal (Santana, Miles Davis), Chester Thompson (Tower Of Power), Big John Patton (Blue Note), Phil Ranelin (Tribe), Sonny Fortune (Roy Ayers, Strata East), Buell Neidlinger (Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones), Peter Erskine (Joni Mitchell, Weather Report) and Lonnie Smith. There’s no such thing as ‘slowing down’ for Mr. Keys!

On the album we are proudly presenting you today (Full Court Press) you’ll find seven sublime tracks recorded in 1984 and released in 1985 on the Olive Branch label. This was Calvin Key’s first solo album since his recordings for Black Jazz Records back in the 1970’s. Full Court Press features an impressive arsenal of working road dogs that Keys had shared the stage with over the years. Included are: Maxayn Lewis (The Ikettes, Morris Day), Mike Thompson (Freddie Hubbard), James Gadson (Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock), Donny Beck (Buddy Miles, Bobby Lyle)…and many others.

Ponca Chief Standing Bear: 1879 the Ponca were forcibly removed from their homeland in northeastern Nebraska and marched to Indian Territory in Oklahoma. Many died along the way, including Standing Bear’s daughter, and, upon arrival, his son would also die. Promising to honor his son’s dying wish to be buried in his homeland, Standing Bear and a small band of his men began the arduous journey home to bury his son. They realized that they were doing so in defiance of orders not to leave the reservation. They were soon arrested and about to be returned to Indian Territory when their plight was publicized in the Omaha Daily Herald.

Standing Bear was held for trial at a fort near Omaha. The outcome was that the Indian was declared a “person” according to law and that Standing Bear and his followers were free to return to their homeland. However, as all of the Tribe’s land had been taken from them, they had no home to return to. Eventually, 26,000 acres in Knox County would be restored to them.

Chief Standing Bear, whose landmark lawsuit in 1879 established that a Native American is a person under the law, is on a new postage stamp.

The U.S. Postal Service released a Forever stamp on Friday honoring the Ponca tribe chief, a civil rights icon known for his "I Am a Man" speech.

The stamp's release comes 146 years after the U.S. Army forcibly removed Chief Standing Bear and some 700 other members of the tribe from their homeland in northeast Nebraska. Standing Bear's son was among those who died of hunger and disease after the tribe's 600-mile journey on foot to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma.

When Standing Bear made the perilous trip back to Nebraska to honor his son with a burial in the tribe's homeland in 1879, he was arrested and imprisoned at Fort Omaha.

His arrest was the catalyst for a lawsuit that led to an 1879 ruling that determined a Native American was a person under the law with an inherent right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

New HxH chapter is out but it’s been quiet at least among the fans I know... it seems because no one remembers what happened last time. :P

Probably this would be a good time to go back to the HxH subreddit because I bet the redditors are loving this chapter dedicated to mafia flunkies fighting each other using absurd powers and are digging up their old reference charts and theories and putting them up on the wall like Pepe Silvia as we speak.

(It’s Zhang Lei, BTW. Zhang Lei will win the succession war. And Sakata is the Silent Majority nen user, working directly for Zhang Lei or possibly for Onior on his behalf. Although if 8th prince Lazurus won the succession war with the help of the Spiders that would be a pretty good plot twist. You heard it here first! )

I’m trying to stay focused on the local battlefield as a way to stay semi-calm. Kansas voters are in a unique position in red states in that they get a direct say on whether or not to protect abortion. August 2nd will have a vote on an anti-abortion amendment to the KS constitution. If the amendment fails, abortion will remain legal here. The Kansas Supreme Court ruled abortion is protected under the KS Constitution. So it’s either the amendment or nothing for the forced birth assholes. They can’t simply pass a law like other states have. This vote isn’t just important for Kansas. It’ll have major ramifications for the region. Missouri will ban all abortions. But if choice stays legal in Kansas, then the Kansas City metro will still have clinics available. Plus, it’s not a bad drive from Oklahoma City to Wichita, or from Omaha to KC. Polls show a majority of Kansans want abortion to remain legal. There’s a good chance we’ll win this one. Enough of a chance that I’m allowing myself to hope. Kansans for Constitutional Freedom is the main group organizing the “Vote NO” fight in Kansas. They’re a coalition of Democrats and Republicans, Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and other groups. If you have a few bucks to spare, please consider them.

...Ahem. I haven’t checked the main tag or been on tumblr much in the last few weeks so forgive me if this is old news but... catching up on Hunter x Hunter and can’t believe that in the year of our lord 2022, we finally have canon confirmation that the Sheila conspiracy theorists were right all along!!!

Sheila confirmed member of the OG phantom troupe!! Also the book she gave little Kurapika and Pairo in the “Kurapika’s Memories” chapter, that inspired them to want to leave the tribe and attempt the Hunter exam, was probably “Dino Hunter” because it looks the same and Sheila only reads one book apparently.

The 80,000 warnings about the ao3 spambots on here are making me realize... do people on tumblr not know what an SEO scam is??????

Everyone warning each other to not click on the links... I mean yes this is just good internet advice, don’t click random spammy links, but if the point was trick you into clicking they would be doing a better job of pretending not to be bots, don’t you think?

The purpose of these comments is SEO optimization... just trying to increase their pagerank in search results on Google or Bing by making a lot of different pages link to them.

These aren’t a big deal if they hit the accounts of active writers, who have plenty of tools to get rid of them. The game is to hit the accounts of writers who aren’t checking their emails, and won’t bother to log in / mark as spam. Then the comments stay up and help with getting their links on early pages of search results or making them look more legitimate.

Anyway here’s something for the AO3 engineering team to do - figure out where these bots are coming from and block the domain. Since ao3 is mostly volunteer labor we just wait until someone’s free to work on it or the board votes to pay for it, though.

Great horned owl 🦉. In other name is Tsgili in the Cherokee tribe. Meaning: vision and insight. I have seen an owl similar to this outside my window. Once a just hooting. But, many tribe's across the country not only believe that owl's have a correlation to death, but the afterlife. Here are a few tribe's who believe in this. Lakota, Omaha, Cheyenne, Fox, Ojibwa, Menominee, Cherokee (🙌🏾), and the Creek; owl's to be either an embodied spirit of the dead. Or associated with a spirit in some way.

Standing Bear was a Ponca American Indian chief who successfully argued in U.S. District Court in 1879 in Omaha that Native Americans are “persons within the meaning of the law” and have the right of habeas corpus. His wife Susette Primeau was also a signatory on the 1879 writ that initiated the famous court case.

In 1875, the Ponca paramount chief White Eagle, Standing Bear, and other Ponca leaders met with US Indian Agent A. J. Carrier and signed a document allowing removal to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma).

White Eagle and other Ponca leaders later claimed that because of a mistranslation, he had understood that they were to move to the Omaha Reservation, not to the Indian Territory. In April 1877, some Ponca people went to live South to the Quapaw Reservation near present-day Peoria, Oklahoma. In May 1877, the US Army forced the removal of the rest of the tribe to go to the Quapaw Reservation, including Standing Bear and his family.

The Ponca arrived in Oklahoma too late to plant crops that year, and the government failed to provide them with the farming equipment it had promised as part of the deal (for a change…).

By spring 1878, nearly a third of the tribe had died due to starvation, malaria and related causes. Standing Bear’s eldest son, Bear Shield, was among the dead. Standing Bear had promised to bury him in the Niobrara River valley homeland, so he left to travel north, with 65 followers.

When they reached at the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska, they were welcomed as relatives. Word of their arrival in Nebraska soon reached the government. Under orders from the Secretary of the Interior, Carl Schurz, who also directed the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Brigadier General George Crook had the Ponca arrested for having left the reservation in Indian Territory.

Although the official orders were to return them immediately to Indian Territory, Crook was sympathetic to the Ponca and appalled to learn of the conditions they had left.

Crook told the Ponca story to Thomas Tibbles, an editor of the Omaha Daily Herald, who publicized it widely. The attorney John L. Webster offered his services pro bono and was joined by Andrew J. Poppleton, chief attorney of the Union Pacific Railroad.

They aided Standing Bear, who in April 1879 sued for a writ of habeas corpus in U.S. District Court in Omaha, Nebraska. Acting as interpreter for Standing Bear was Susette LaFlesche, an accomplished and educated, bilingual Omaha of mixed-race background. The case is called United States ex rel. Standing Bear v. Crook. General Crook was named as the formal defendant because he was holding the Ponca under color of law.

As the trial drew to a close, Judge Dundy announced that Chief Standing Bear would be allowed to make a speech in his own behalf. Raising his right hand, Standing Bear proceeded to speak. Among his words were, “That hand is not the color of yours, but if I prick it, the blood will flow, and I shall feel pain,” said Standing Bear. “The blood is of the same color as yours. God made me, and I am a man.” Judge Dundy stated that the federal government had failed to show a basis under law for the Poncas’ arrest and captivity.

It was a landmark case, recognizing that an American Indian is a “person” under the law and entitled to its rights and protection. “The right of expatriation is a natural, inherent and inalienable right and extends to the American Indian as well as to the more fortunate white race,” the judge concluded.

The Army immediately freed Standing Bear and his followers. The case gained the attention of the Hayes administration, which provided authority for Standing Bear and some of the tribe to return permanently to the Niobrara valley in Nebraska.

Between October 1879 and 1883, Standing Bear traveled in the eastern United States and Europe, speaking about Indian rights in forums sponsored by Indian advocate and former abolitionist Wendell Phillips. Susette (Bright Eyes) LaFlesche (by then married to Thomas Tibbles) and her brother Francis, who later became an ethnologist with the Smithsonian Institution, accompanied Standing Bear on the speaking tour. The LaFlesche siblings took turns acting as his translator. Tibbles also was part of the party. During his lecture tour, Standing Bear won the support of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and other prominent Americans.

Standing Bear died in 1908 and was buried on a hill overlooking the site of his birth. Today the federal government recognizes two tribes of the people: the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma.

The 63-acre Standing Bear Park in Ponca City, Oklahoma was named in his honor. In addition to the annual pow-wow, it is the site of the Standing Bear Museum and Education Center, as well as a 22-foot-high bronze statue of the chief.
