Hiding in the event of a School Shooting
In this post I’m going to list what are the safest places to hide within a school if there isn’t a safe way outside or you are not safely in a classroom going through lockdown procedure. This is entirely hypothetical; you won't necessarily be involved but in the event of a school shooting it’s best to know how to stay safe just in case.
- A janitor's closet that can lock from the inside (preferably one that is not within the main parts of the school.)
- An elevator (make sure it’s closed and not moving.)
- Sub-rooms within room (storage rooms in music and art rooms most likely would be some of the safest.)
- Offices within the guidance/main office (navigating through the guidance/main office is times consuming, rarely have windows, and lock from the inside, making them fairly safe.)
- If you can, within a locker (an active shooter will most likely not look through all of the lockers in the school.)
- If there is a basement or area that only has pipes (it most likely won’t come into an active shooters mind to check, just avoid any electrical rooms/sections.)
- Small storage cabinets within an empty classroom (the shooter most likely would not enter an empty classroom to begin with and the cabinet would safely conceal you.)
- 1 person bathrooms (they typically have better locks on the doors of 1 person bathrooms and a shooter most likely wouldn’t think about them.)
** In the event that you can get outside GO OUTSIDE, and if there are no police outside already here are some helpful tips: **
- Hide behind cars (make sure you’re concealed from any windows.)
- Get away from the school grounds (nearby neighborhoods/businesses.)
- When running out/away from the school, run zigzags (this makes you a harder target.)
- Even if you don’t have a set destination, keep running until you feel as though there is absolutely no way you could be seen from the school.
!!!NOTIFY AUTHORITIES!!! Even if you think somebody already has, do it anyways. Also, if you saw/know the shooter give a description to the police (it could help them.)
Again, this is entirely hypothetical, but safety is key, and these are just some things that came to mind, feel free to add more.
I understand Mental Health is extremely important too, but should it ever get to there being an active shooter please read these, so you know what to do in that unfortunate situation.
Please be safe in schools.

17-year-old Anthony Barbaro excelled in Olean High School. He was an honour student that ranked eighth in his class of 200. He was a member of the National Honor Society. His classmates recalled him as being a “brain” but a “loner.” He was also a member of the school’s rifle team and had been awarded a Regent’s Scholarship in December of 1974.
On the 30th of December, 1974, Barbaro went to Olean High School as it was closed for the Christmas period. Once inside, he climbed up three flights of stairs and set up a vantage point. He had brought along his favourite sniper rifle. Barbaro then lit a small fire which burned itself out but not before the fire brigade were called. Over the course of two hours, he shot at the citizens down below. He killed a school custodian, a pregnant woman sitting in her car, and an utility company employee. Eleven other people were wounded, mostly fire fighters who had come to investigate the blaze.
Police apprehended Barbaro after storming the room with tear gas. They found him on the floor, wearing a defective gas mask. After he was arrested, police discovered his diary which detailed his plans for the shooting spree. He had been planning for five months and had listed several potential locations. He even considered just “getting a car and driving through the town shooting.” In his home they also found gasoline, glass bottles, homemade smoke bombs and empty propane canisters.
On the 1st of November, 1975, he took his motivation to the grave with him. He was discovered with his prison bed sheet knotted around his neck with the other end tied to the bars of the cell. His trial was scheduled to begin just the following day. He pleaded innocent by reason of insanity but was declared competent to stand trial. He left behind three suicide notes. One was addressed to his family, the second was addressed to a girl he had been corresponding with but had never met, and the final was addressed: “To whom it may concern.” In this note he said he had a choice between living or dying and with his suicide, he was exercising that choice.

The quiet hum of the small mechanical fan beside me is comforting, the soft feeling of Tate’s head on my shoulder grounding me. It’s been a day since the predicament in the bathroom, but things between Tate and I had already changed drastically. He’s more… touchy. He’s still a bit reserved, but he no longer strays away from me. His eyes have been darting to the old record player on my desk, the unspoken request to listen hanging in the air. I smile softly.
“Hey, I’m in the mood for some music. You got any requests?” I ask softly, gently moving away from the boy on the floor.
“Actually, I’d like to hear what you’re into. You wear those My Chemical Romance shirts a lot, but I’ve never heard of ‘em.” My eyes widened in shock.
“You’ve never heard of My Chem? Dude, you gotta check ‘em out, their first album is revolutionary.” I’m already flicking through my boxes of records, stopping once I hit the orange hue of I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. I ever-so-carefully take out the record, placing it gently on the small player. The needle slowly falls onto the dark vinyl, the soft tones of Romance filling the room.
“You remember the shooting back in 74’? The Olean High School Shooting? Well, the lead singer, Gerard Way-- he was there. It shook him to the core, and he realized he wanted to make a difference in the world. He called anyone he knew who could play and instrument and the rest is history” Tate smiled at my antics. “It’s odd to think about MCR’s origins. It’s weird how something so… beautiful could come from something so horrible.”
“So, is it all angsty guitar playing?” Tate teases. I roll my eyes as the next track plays, softly singing along to the opening lines of Honey, This Mirror Isn’t Big Enough for the Two of Us.
“You’ll come to discover the superiority of this album, Langdon, and you can quote me on that.” I winked, laughing at the way Tate’s face flushed. His endearing smile lingers on his face until the song comes to an end. Vampires Will Never Hurt You plays next, and Tate immediately reacts.
“Ooh, this one is actually really good.” I turn up the volume just a bit, my head snapping to the door as it swings open.
“Y/n, turn that bullshit off-- who the hell are you?” My mother snaps, her eyes narrowing at Tate. He seems shocked, so I speak for him.
“He’s my friend. I'll turn off the music, just leave us alone.” My mother glares at me before speaking again.
“Get the hell out of my house.” She says firmly to Tate. He quickly says goodbye and scurries out the door, leaving me and my mother alone. The air is heavy with anticipation, the strong smell of whisky hitting my nose. I’m glad Tate left. He shouldn’t have to see this.
“Whore,” my mother growls. “I know what you kids do, you hide away in dark corners and feel each other up. Disgusting dirty little rats, that’s what you are and all you’ll ever be!” She shouts, and she strikes me across the face before I can process her words. It stings, but it’s nothing I haven’t felt before.
“I’ve never done anything like that with anyone!” I lied before ducking away from another swing. She stumbles, too drunk to stay steady. She crashes into my dresser, the sound of clattering items echoing through the room. My mother struggles to her feet, her eyes flicking to the record on my record player, and an evil smile grows on her face.
“You two really bonded over this, huh?” She shakily walks toward the record player.
“I told you, we didn’t do anth--”
“Don’t fucking lie to me, slut,” she spits. “I know what you do with the boys you bring around here-- the boys and the girls.” She grabs the shiny black record, clutching it in her hand.
“No daughter of mine is gonna be a whore, let alone a fucking faggot.” With that final statement, she hurls the record against the wall, shattering it completely. She stumbles out of the room, and I’m left to pick up the pieces. Again.
It’s not the first time this has happened, and it won’t be the last. Even after I escape this hell house and this goddamn town, there’s always gonna be people like her. There’s always gonna be people who want to hurt me-- and that’s why vulnerability is bad. I want to protect Tate from people like my mother because I know Tate can’t defend himself. I finish picking up the leftover pieces of I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. I hear the door open behind me, and I brace myself.
“Y-Y/n?” the small voice of my little sister, Delilah, echoes through my room. I whip around and notice the tears in her eyes, the familiar look of fear behind her retinas. I open my arms to welcome here.
“What’s wrong, ‘lilah?” I coo, stroking her hair gently. She sniffles.
“Mommy is l-loud, she s-scared me.” Anger bubbles in the pit of my stomach; I’ll die before I let my mother harm Delilah.
“Did she hurt you, baby?” She shakes her head, resting her temple on my shoulder. “If she ever hurts you, or tries to hurt you, tell me.”
“Where did your boy go?” Delilah asks suddenly, turning to look around the room.
“Tate? He left when mama came in. Why?” She smiles softly.
“He talked to me last night. I got scared in the dark and came in to sleep with you. He was there and he told me he really liked you.” She giggled slightly. “He said if any monsters tried to hurt me, he’d beat them up.” A smile broke out on my face, an odd, warm, fuzzy feeling spread throughout my body. It’s good to know that Tate cares. Note to self: call Tate later. An idea pops into my head.
“Hey, ‘lilah, wanna go get some ice cream?” The young girl in my lap nods frantically. She scrambles to get her shoes on, her mint green pants a blur as she darts to collect her things. I laugh as I pull on my worn-down boots, grabbing my wallet from the desk as I do so. Delilah practically drags me out the door in a fit of anticipating giggles, the traumatic scene from before disappearing from my mind.

By the time Delilah and I start walking home, the sun is low on the horizon, a navy blue intruding on the golden orange of the sunset. We’re not far from home, the tip of our roof peeking over some trees in the distance. Delilah is holding my hand tightly, her ice cream cone in the other. My face breaks out in a large grin when I see Tate walking towards us, his eyes lighting up behind his mess of curly hair.
“Hey, stranger,” He calls out, jogging over to us. His eyes widen at the bruise on my face, his hand instinctively reaching out to grab mine. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” I quickly peck him on the cheek. “I am now.” Delilah shivers, gently tugging my arm. She’s sleepy, I can tell. “Alright, we gotta get home. I’ll see you around, Langdon.” He smiles.
“See ya around,” He walks away and Delilah yawns.
I immediately know something is wrong when I notice the front door is wide open. My stomach drops, and I turn to face Delilah.
“Lilah, stay here. Stand behind these trees until I come to get you okay?” She nods worriedly, planting her feet in the dirt. I ran into the house, grabbing my old baseball bat from the front entryway. My hands gripped the wooden bat so tightly my knuckles were a ghostly white. The house is dead silent, that is, until the loud clatter of the baseball bat hitting the floor. All the air leaves my lungs at the sight I’m faced with, pure terror coursing through my veins.
In the middle of the floor was my mother in a puddle of crimson blood, her throat slit. Her cold, dead eyes stared into mine. I screamed.

Jean Kulhan, a 20-year-old Junior from Dominican College, Blauvelt, was crowned Miss Rockland County on Saturday night at the Ramapo Senior High School.
She was one of 12 girls who competed for the title and will represent the county at the Miss New York State Pageant in Olean in July. The winner of that pageant will compete in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City in September.
Miss Kulhan, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kulhan, lives at 135 Sunset Road, Blauvelt. She is training to become an elementary school teacher. Miss Kulhan weighs 108 pounds, stands five feet, five inches tall and measures 34-23-35. For her talent performance she did a ballet dance.
The first runner up was Anita Quiros, 21, of Nanuet; second runner up, Mary Stephens, 18, Pomona; third runner up, Lois Ellen Kahler, 19, Orangeburg; and fourth runner up, Dee Anne Hora, 17, Congers.
Miss Quiros was also the winner of the Miss Congeniality Award, a decision made by secret ballot of all the contestants. She will graduate from New York University this June and plans to become a teacher. She sang and played a song on the guitar for her talent number.
Mistress of Ceremonies Saturday night was Barbara Baugh, 21, second runner up for Miss America 1968 and a Miss Wisconsin titlist.
She sang several solos and was accompanied on the piano by music writer Bernie Wayne, composer of the Miss America Theme Song. Wayne was one of five judges Saturday night who included Dr. John C. Petrone and William R. School, both of Suffern, and Mrs. Eunice O'Brien of The White House, Route 59, Spring Valley.
The pageant was sponsored by the Exchange Club of Rockland County, John Geideman was the executive director.

*~Olean High School Shooting~*
On the afternoon of December 30th, 1974, seventeen year old Anthony Barbaro entered his high school in upstate New York armed with guns, explosives and a recording of Elton John’s 1974 ballad,“Ticking.”
Barbaro climbed the stairs to the 3rd floor, where he prepared to aim his high-powered rifle out the window. There he encountered a 62-year-old janitor who was responding to reports of a disturbance. Barbaro shot him in the chest, killing him. He then returned to his improvised sniper’s nest and began shooting down at the street below. He killed a 58-year-old gas company employee walking on an adjacent street. Then, he trained his rifle on a 25-year-old pregnant woman, driving by the school. He shot her in the head, killing her and her unborn child. Barbaro went on to shoot seven others who would survive their wounds. Police and National Guard finally entered the school and pelted Barbaro’s position with tear gas. He was taken into custody after the gas mask he had brought along malfunctioned.
At some point during the incident, Barbaro pressed the “Play” button on a cassette player that he had carried with him, and so Elton John’s “Ticking” became the soundtrack for his violence.
Anthony Barbaro was born in 1957 in Olean, New York, a small town south of Buffalo. He was the son of an executive; the youngest of four children. He served as an altar boy at his local Catholic Church. Barbaro excelled academically at Olean High School where he was a member of both the National Honor Society and the Rifle Club. He was frequently described as “quiet” and “a loner.”
We know that Barbaro planned extensively for the shooting; police found notebooks in his bedroom detailing his plans to wreak havoc on his hometown. But over forty years later, his motivations remain largely unknown.
At least one friend has claimed that Barbaro was alienated by his homosexuality. Others have suggested a dysfunctional, perhaps even oppressive, home-life.
Following his arrest, he was charged with 3 counts of murder. He spent 10 months in jail, awaiting trial.
On November 1st 1975, on the eve of his trial, guards rushed into his cell to find Anthony hanging from his bed sheet. He left suicide notes, which in part read;
“I guess I just wanted to kill the person I hate most – myself, I just didn’t have the courage. I wanted to die, but I couldn’t do it, so I had to get someone to do it for me. It didn’t work out.”
Another note partly read;
“Some will always ask, ‘Why?’ I don’t know — no one will. What has been, can’t be changed. I’m sorry. It ends like it began; in the middle of the night, someone might think it selfish or cowardly to take one’s own life. Maybe so, but it’s the only free choice I have. The way I figure, I lose either way. If I’m found not guilty, I won’t survive the pain I’ve caused— my guilt. If I’m convicted, I won’t survive the mental and physical punishment of my life in prison.”

New Century Modern Home Design
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design (previously featured here) recently completed this beautiful home and I am honored to be sharing their incredible work here on Home Bunch. Please keep reading to know all details shared by this talented interior designer:
“We met the clients as they toured a Street of Dreams project we had designed. They had found a 9 acre parcel of land to build their dream home on. They had started working with a home designer but they didn’t feel like the floor plan was feeling like the family home they had dreamed of at the beginning of the process. We worked along side the home designer and clients to reconfigure spaces and also reduce the overall footprint of the home that just felt too big. The home ended up being 7,500 sq ft.”

Anthony Barbaro (1958 - 1975) was a lifelong resident of Olean, New York. He had attended Olean High School, where he was an honor student and a star marksman on his school's rifle team. He ranked eighth highest academic score in his senior class, and was inducted into the National Honor Society in February 1974. He had also won a Regents Scholarship to New York University that December. Those who knew Barbaro remember him as being quiet and "more of a loner than not." Louis Nicol, former principal of Olean High School, said that Barbaro excelled scholastically and caused no disciplinary problems at school. Barbaro lived with his parents and his three younger siblings – sister Cecile, brothers Steven and Chris. His father was an executive of a successful manufacturing firm, while Anthony worked with his mother at a local fast-food restaurant. Barbaro had also shown an interest in engineering, and had hoped to become a scientist. On the afternoon of December 30, 1974, Barbaro left his house with his mother's car. He had told his brother, Chris, that he was going target shooting. Barbaro arrived at Olean High School at approximately 2:50 p.m. After leaving his car, he entered the school building through an opened side entrance and proceeded to the third floor where he set off a coke bottle filled with gasoline and a wick. Unable to open the locked door to the student council room, Barbaro shot off the lock, entered the student council room, and tied the door shut. A 12-man custodial crew was doing routine maintenance in the basement of the school at this time. When they heard a fire alarm sound, the superintendent dispatched Earl Metcalf to see what the problem was at the 3rd floor. He met Joe Kosidlo, the 3rd floor custodian, who asked him to vacate because he thought he heard gun shots. Mr. Metcalf did not listen and proceeded to where he heard the noise. Anthony Barbaro was then confronted by Earl Metcalf, seeing Metcalf through the glass window of the student council room, he opened his door, shot and killed him. #destroytheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B0qrsrRh-1K/?igshid=1dtrq6c2ez989
