why do you think byler is less popular than mlvn on instagram?
on tiktok, tumblr, twitter and pretty much all other platforms byler is the more popular ship, but for some reason mlvns is more popular on instagram.
This is a good question! I’m not sure there’s a definitive answer, but if I were to take a stab at it, maybe it has something to do with the age demographic/type of fan on each platform?
Tumblr is very gay platform, and it’s also a platform for theorizing, so it makes sense that Byler is more popular here. Mlvn just kinda exists right now. There’s not much to theorize about. Like if you really believe that the monologue fixed everything and Mike and El will live happily ever after, then okay. It makes sense why a lot of them believe Mlvn will get married young and have children, cause where else is for them to go? All the other ships have unfinished business, even Jopper, the ship that’s probably in the best place after S4. They still have to figure out how to work together as a couple with a blended family.
Byler is inherently exciting to Tumblr cause it’s all about theorizing and anticipation. And it’s queer. Age demographic-wise, it seems like Byler Tumblr is all over the map too: from millennials who’ve been through this before with other ships that turned out to be queerbait to Gen Z adults my age to younger Zoomers who are truly excited about a ship becoming canon for the first time. There’s probably some of Gen Alpha here too, as well as people from Gen X. This shows that Byler is exciting and appeals to a wide range of folks.
With TikTok, it’s a younger skewing platform, and fandom-wise, there’s an emphasis on edits as well as Byler theorizing. And honestly, Season 4 genuinely didn’t give Mlvns that much to work with when it comes to edits. I mean, Will is in most of the shots. And Mlvn theories don’t seem that exciting. The GA already sees Mlvn endgame as the foregone conclusion, and he monologued to her. What else is there to theorize about? Since TikTok is a newer platform, it seems like there’s just less Mlvn-loyalists making content there, and Byler shippers have just taken it over. This is in large part due to Stranger Things as a whole exploding in popularity during summer 2022 and a lot of people switching sides to Byler during that time. There was a lot of content to create. I also think to some extent angsty edits perform better. And Byler obviously has a lot of angst.
Twitter honestly seems like the biggest war zone to me, which is why I stay away from ST Twitter for the most part. There’s just a lot of petty fights and arguments. Clearly we have a strong presence there, as evidenced by us causing the whole Byler script fiasco in august 2022. Mlvns there seem to be the most toxic, and I’ve noticed they always have Regina George tendencies (a lot of them have PFPs of Millie, Regina George, Barbie, or Olivia Rodrigo for some reason). I don’t know if it’s true that there are more Bylers than Mlvns on Twitter, but if that is true, that’s once again because Byler is just more exciting lol.
I think Instagram is a weird creature overall. It’s older than TikTok, so the fandom presence was likely established in 2016 when Mlvn mania began. It’s not really algorithmically based in the same way (with clear trending topics), so I think it’s easier for people to just follow and interact with accounts they support. I’ve noticed that a lot of the Mlvn accounts are Fillie accounts or Fillie-adjacent accounts often run by young girls (but not always- there are older fans too).
They tend to overly romanticize Mlvn and genuinely see it as the height of romance, even denying that they have any problems whatsoever. And they tend to bombard ST comment sections with extremely overzealous pro-Mlvn stuff, sometimes bordering on bizarre. Maybe part of this is due to IG basically being Facebook for younger millennials/older Zoomers? I think it’s a substantially more normie and less queer space than Tumblr. It’s also picture-based, so Mlvns often post screenshots from the show and pictures of Finn and Millie.
And obviously reddit is pro-Mlvn to an extreme too, with Bylers basically been exiled to the Byler subreddit. But there it’s largely middle-aged men who can’t fathom their favorite nerdy 80s nostalgia show becoming “woke” and gay.

Considering writing a truly elaborate reverse isekai established relationship older Cleradin comes to Hawkins to meet pre relationship Byler and help El and everyone save the world while also repairing their relationship and getting Mike and Will to smooch while they’re at it.
Lucas’ fantasy counterpart is a prince (this is why he has the horse!) and turns out Erica is a princess and he has to swear Will the Wise and Sir Mike to utmost secrecy that his sister can NEVER find out she is actual royalty in another reality.
Dustin teaches fantasy Will about electricity and they do a magical mourning ritual for Eddie that he would have loved.
Steve invites them to stay at his house but Will the Wise, who is a grown ass man in his twenties, refuses to leave his mommy Joyce so everyone moves in and uses Steve’s house as a base.
Robin has to take fantasy Will aside and explain homophobia to him because he is so incredibly outwardly gay all the time.
Sir Mike and Nancy get along swimmingly because they are both fighters and relentless and he thinks it’s fun to be older than her for once.
There are fantasy to mundane eighties makeovers that upset and arouse Hawkins Mike, fantasy Will is very attached to his terrible wizard hat, fantasy Mike thinks blazers are neat, there are arguments about pants.
El is trying to reach out to fantasy El to repeat the portal accident that got Cleradin to Hawkins in the first place while also trying to help Max and defend against Vecna.
Will is completely flustered at all times by Sir Mike and Jonathan teases him relentlessly.
Sir Mike is an idiot who asks Hopper for an ale and gets his tongue stuck inside the freezer and finally bonds with Mike over the utility of radio communication.
Mike cannot even with Will the Wise who is so curious and outspoken and creative and keeps paying attention to everyone other than him how dare he.
Will the Wise is desperately avoiding picking up Hawkins Mike and squeezing him and ruffling his hair and biting him from cuteness aggression.
Will learns about Cleradin’s romance direct from Will the Wise but Sir Mike never tells Hawkins Mike, but Mike decides it’s worth the risk to follow through on his hunch and goes for it with Will anyway and they have a pre-final-battle first date and it is extremely cute because they deserve nice things.
El gets occasional communiques from her fantasy counterpart who helps her find Max by bringing fantasy Max into the void so El can look for her signature in Hawkins. Fantasy El is a super powerful and deeply weird witch and Hawkins El isn’t sure if she is okay with growing up to be like her and fantasy El is like “of course you won’t! Just by meeting me we’ve changed everything about what you would have been. Everything is changing all the time!” And Hawkins El is like, you are confusing and remind me of my punk sister so I guess that’s okay but please don’t go making any more portals by accident. And fantasy El is like, gosh, you are sooooo serious all the time, fiiiiiinnnneeee. But she makes one little portal a while later after Cleradin gets back home to send their well wishes and ask for Joyce’s meatloaf recipe.

sitting here thinking about english teacher mike wheeler with his dorky hand gestures (see: wrestlers scene from s4) and excited rambling wearing his dorky little sweatervests but keeping the long hair and will coming over to Mike’s classroom right as school’s ending and catching a glimpse of his husband dramatically using his dnd skills to act out part of Romeo and Juliet or Macbeth for his students as he slinks onto the floor pathetically and pretends to die and then leaps back up, concludes the lesson, and then will walks in, grinning at Mike’s antics and Mike’s a flustered dork upon seeing will, even after all these years of being together and everyone’s out of the classroom at this point so will leans in and tucks his husband’s hair behind his ear as he kisses him!!

Random Byler proof- the Duffer's subverting audience expectations from the beginning
The only way byler will be canon is if the Duffers have the balls to subvert the audience's expectations as well as the popular 80s Sci fi tropes that make up miIeven- main boy meets main girl, bsy etc.
However, there is already so much evidence that the Duffers love doing this.
In this scene (where Dustin offers the rest of the pizza to Nancy at the beginning of s1) so many people (including myself) originally thought it was because he had a crush on her, since that is such an established and tired trope, especially in 80s Sci fi media.
However, it turns out that Dustin is just nice like that and he doesn't have a crush on his friend's older sister.
Although Steve's character development and straight baiting stobin are great examples of the Duffers subverting expectations, especially for big plot points, it's little stuff like this that shows that what the Duffers want to do is not only show an appreciation for the genre, but also use its own tropes against it.
Subverting a well known trope (however minor) in the first 10 mins of the first episode show how this really is the foundation of Stranger Things and that we can expect much bigger subversions in the future (aka byler) :)

i like that you talk about the fandom and byler being allowed mature moments or treatment cos im still scarred from people calling me a freak just because im over 21 and daring to acknowledge byler’s attraction to each other :( but it seems if you’re closer in age to the characters you’re seen as less weird for it? no one’s safe i mean the puritans go for anybody but i guess my logic thinks it’s good younger people discuss the topic even though older stans have every right to as well. i think it’ll get better after the party are older in the time jump? like the older teens like steve etc. maybe. i hope!
i'm sorry people called you that! :( i mean, i'm only 18, so i guess those puritans won't get too mad about teenager talking about teenage sexuality, but either way it doesn't make sense for only teens to have a monopoly over talking about other teens having sex. i think a lot of comes from the "pedo/grooming scare", where any adult seen talking about any matters related to sex is labeled as a creep. but that shouldn't be the case. for one thing, it literally is the jobs of adults to educate younger people about sex. for another thing, adults WERE literally teens and most of the time speak to their own teenage experiences. it's kind of silly, because i've seen people with this absurd mindset that only teens can talk/write teens having sex, and it's like... wow, you've killed half of the media industry already.
again, i think people are overcompensating. of course, it's naturally to be weary of pedos or groomers, which have become especially more prevalent/accessible due to the advent of social media, but people swung too hard in the opposite direction, which is why any adult speaking on sex is thought of as a weirdo. there's a lot of ageism and stuff too, but i digress.
yeah, i think in season 5 (timeskip) when they end up establishing that the party members are in their late teens, people will chill out more. i guess people are still stuck with the mindset that mike and will are 14/15 (even though 14/15 y/os definitely have sexual thoughts and even experiences at this point).

What do you think of Millie saying that mildew’s relationship is stronger than ever now after season 4? I know she probably doesn’t know how season 5 is gonna go but it’s kind of making me lose my confidence a little about Byler /:
i understand that, and i honestly felt the same initially, then i realized it literally doesnt matter. actors always put their two cents in interviews, but its not a reliant source because they dont write the show. millie also had a number of questionable takes to begin with, such as preferring brenner as el's more prominent father figure than hopper apparently; its yikes
i also believe this with brett. his opinions about byler gives me reassurance that we're not delusional, and its nice to see people from the cast talk about it in a positive light, but its not something im completely relying on. i mostly just treat it as crumbs
noah is kind of a different case because he literally plays will, so im giving his statements a bit more credibility even if hes a little biased with byler.
but other than that, dont fret anon :)
look back to the various evidence we collected in the past 3 months. look at the tumblr follower count. in the rate we're growing, we're gonna surpass de*tiel. it shows we're far from wrong in how we interpret the show and mike and will's relationship.
look at the ratio between malware and byler from all social med sites when it comes to content.
look at the script poll votes where barely anyone voted for the monologue, even with the bylers' help.
and lastly, the most important evidence of all, just have to look at the clear visual hints and narrative cues in the show. will has done nothing but lose in the show. the most basic of conflicts when it comes to a good story is giving the character struggles in order to give them the most satisfying conclusion. they established will's wants this season, and that want is spending the rest of his life with mike. if they dont give him that, its not a satisfying ending, and it simply doesnt make narrative sense if it doesnt give some form of catharsis to the audience after emphasizing on his struggles so much for 4 seasons straight. they want us to feel for him, to feel sorry for him. with this said, they are basically obligated to give him his ideal happy ending. and that ending only makes sense with mike.
also consider the framing of byler's shots specifically, the way they approached the individual arcs with mike, el and will.
remember that s4 is supposed to make you feel like you lost, and that includes the characters. will thought he lost mike, but with how mike confided and reassured will in the end as his final moment, and not with el, is crucial. consider the fact theyre bringing back older dynamics and they will not be introducing new characters in the final season. and also obviously, the framing of the final scene.
this got long but i totally feel you, byler doubt is the worse orz i hope this helped a little bit to alleviate that ^^

St Ghost Hunter Au
(There are three parts: Characters, plot, and relationships)
Characters:
-Mike: He is a ghost hunter along with his friends. They go into haunted places to see if they can document ghost sightings. He usually picks the places and and knows the history.
-Lucas: His is also a ghost hunter. He is usually the one who gives the play by play to the the camera. Him and Mike are the ones who try to talk to the ghosts most often. He is also not afraid to antagonize the ghosts.
-Dustin: His also is a ghost hunter. He’s the one who’s in charge of the equipment and is always making new gadgets to try out
-Max: Also hunts ghosts and is by far the most fearless out of all them. She actually doesn’t believe in ghosts and just goes with them to hangout and prove her point. The guys constantly try to convince her ghosts are real.
-Nancy: She is a reporter who at first thinks mikes ghost endeavours are a waste of time but she slowly starts to change her mind.
- Robin: She is a conspiracy theorist who sometimes works with the party to send them to different haunted locations.
-Steve: He is Robins best friend who thinks her conspiracies are strange but he supports her anyway.
-Will: He’s a ghost whose only been dead for a couple months now and he can’t remember how he died.
-El: She is Will’s sister who hasn’t given up on him and has been looking into ways to bring people back from the dead. She has even gotten into which craft for this reason.
-Jonathan: He also hasn’t given up on Will yet and does everything he can to help El get Will back.
Plot:
When the party goes to investigate a haunted house (a location recommended by Robin) they come across Will. Mike is the first one to see Will. The rest of the party then meet him and then later Jonathan and El. The older kids all work together to help find out how Will died (Mike dragged Nancy into helping since she is a reporter he thought she could help). The younger Kids work together to find away to bring Will back from the dead as well as makes sure that there is someone at the house with Will so he is not lonely. Later on a rival ghost hunting group sarts poking around with the intent to hurt Will so now everyone needs to speed up their efforts and having one person at the house with Will is now a way to keep Will safe.
Relationships:
-Dustin and Suzie: They are still long distance but Dustin calls her and tells her all about their ghost hunting adventures. They also work on ghost gadgets over face time and share theories about what’s going on
-Elumax: Lucas and Max are an established ghost hunting couple. They have been together for awhile and work well together. Once Max meets El they end up bonding and Max and Lucas are big supporters for El and help her deal with the loss of her brother (even if it’s not permanent). They all just fit so well together that they don’t really notice at first when the dynamic shifts from just platonic to something else as well. They only make it official when someone asks what their relationship is and they all decide that Max dates both El and Lucas (you can decide if El and Lucas also date or are just really close friends). 
Ronance: Robin and Nancy first officially meet once Mike convinces Nancy to help find out what happened to Will and they don’t really get along at first. Nancy doesn’t believe in ghost or any or any of Robins conspiracy theories. Overtime they grow closer and Robin shows Nancy that different can be good and that not everything is how it seems. Nancy kisses Robin first and when they pull away and Robin questions Nancy she repeats that different can be good and then they kiss again. 
-Byler: Mike meets ghost Will and his interest in immediately peaked as he has never seen a real ghost before. Will is intrigued by Mike because usually people get scared when they see him but Mike is not. Mike is the one who spends most of his time keeping Will company and gets really protective about certain things (especially when the rival ghost hunters start poking around). Will is not helpless though and has used his ghost powers to save Mike when the rival ghost hunters started taking things a bit to far. Mike starts to fall in love with Will so when they’re first attempt at brining Will back fails he takes it really hard. Right after that is when they have their confession. They don’t have their first Kiss right away though it happens later on.

i don't think we appreciate enough how will being canonically in love with mike since the beginning means that every single byler scene from the start was meant to be interpreted as romantic.
crazy together? it was a love confession on will's end. the super spy scene? the hand hold was a romantic thing to will. mike sleeping by will's bedside? romantic in will's eyes. the shed scene? establishing why will is in love with mike, even if he isn't the one conscious and speaking in that moment. the movie date? romantic tension for will. the rain fight? about how will's sexuality/love for mike is becoming painful to face as he gets older. "what if you want to join another party?"/"not possible"? will saying he won't fall in love with anyone besides mike. the airport hug? showing us the awkwardness that comes with will's feelings for mike. the rink o mania fight? about the pain caused by growing apart from the person will is in love with. "friends. best friends."? the words "best friends" have romantic significance to will. burying the body in the desert? will staring at mike is him pining over the boy he's in love with. the van scene? any words spoken to/about "el" are really about will and his feelings for mike.
but then we're expected to believe that the romantic connotation is exclusive to what will is saying/doing, even when mike initiates the moment or is doing the exact same thing?
all of these moments are two-sided—even the van scene, when mike's monologue is a response to what will told him. it just doesn't make SENSE to interpret a lot of these moments as romantic if it's just will who has feelings for mike, since mike is the one driving so many of them. if they're meant to be romantic for will, they're absolutely meant to be romantic for mike.

Okay I want to be clear on one thing - I do not enjoy smut. I don't enjoy watching sex scenes. I don't enjoy having sex myself. I don't support sexualizing actors. It's my personal belief that sex shouldn't be a topic we shy away from or ignore, and not just in media, especially when it comes to queer people. There's already far too much stigma around that. Since the release of season 4, Stranger Things is rated to be for people ages 15 and over. This is not a children's show. Like I mentioned in my post, sex has been a consistent throughout the entire series. The writers clearly view it as just another part of love, and they aren't wrong.
It's been established that sex exists between many of the characters, I'd again like to point out that they wrote Nancy and Steve getting together when she was only a year older than the party currently is. It shouldn't be surprising that they would write something to imply sexual attraction at the age they are. Nothing has ever been explicitly shown and I don't expect nor want that to change.
In most cases, sex has been used as a form of humor in ST. "So Jonathan... How was the pull out?" "What's a good scream?" *Runs away from lingerie* "I told them to have sex" "boobies" "it's time you give that right hand a vacation" It isn't meant to be taken seriously or looked too far into. It's a joke.
I enjoy analyzing the subtext of the show, and phallic imagery happens to be a part of that. They added these scenes for us to notice and get a chuckle out of, same with the pineapple on pizza being "blasphemous" and Tarzan Boy playing at rink o mania. It's the kind of subtext that just makes you laugh once you know it's there. It's not that deep. Surface level yes, it was just Will pining after Mike. There was nothing sexual actually happening in the scene. It's kinda just there to show us "Hey! Mike is attracted to Will!" subtly. Byler is all about subtext and subtly. I can garentee you though if they showed this type of imagery between Steve and Nancy, or Hopper and Joyce, or even Lucas and Max, the GA would have picked up on it almost imidiatly and be laughing their asses off.
My last post was kinda the same joke in a different light. Just weirdly coincidental that in the same conversation we get they "you're moping. Mopey dick" "you were moping you were barely talking" parallel, we get the "give your right hand a vacation" and Mike's right hand on the hose.
