Gustaf Tenggren, who worked as one of the chief illustrators (not animators) for Disney during the 30’s in front of Christian’s Hut on Catalina Island. Tenggren did a lot of the preproduction art for Snow White, Bambi, and Pinocchio, as well as backgrounds for The Old Mill among others.
Christian’s Hut was originally built as a bar to entertain the cast and crew of the ‘35 Mutiny on the Bounty, hence the name after Fletcher Christian. Clark Gable lived above the bar during filming, in fact you can’t make it out in the picture but at the bottom of the sign in the top left corner it originally read “Prop. Clark Gable” (whether he was actually ever the proprietor in anything other than name only is unknown). After the filming of the movie the bar remained and became a regular hangout for Humphrey Bogart and Errol Flynn along with other old Hollywood elite when they’d sail their boats to Catalina Island. The bar tender was none other than Ray Buhen who would go on to open Tiki Ti. Lot’s of cool things all in one picture!

Genuine question. Anyone here like treasure planet. Because I’ve been hyperfixating on it for so long like it’s an actual work of art; like one of the first 3D and 2D animated movies made. One of the first for Disney too; and it was a work of art. It had such a deeper message with even a sadder backstory, a more realistic and sad backstory for Jim than any other Disney character. You might have characters like Mirabel who has a fight with their grandmother and stuff; feeling unloved but for some reason that’s still so out of reach. While some people might understand that feeling of being pushed out the family it’s still hard to really relate to while Jim just has the thing about his backstory. Loosing his father, seeing his mother cry, barely being out of reach from him, finding a father figure in someone else. I just don’t get it but even people who didn’t loose a dad or a parent can still somehow relate.
And character growth is amazing, like it’s so interesting and even with the aliens and monsters is the movie it seems more probable and humanly possible compared to most of the fantasy movies like *wish.*
And I love how it made me cry, most shows don’t but it really got me tearing; like I wish they made more movies like that. A treasure planet 2 would have been amazing but I’m glad they didn’t; shouldn’t risk ruining a work of art like TRP with a sequel as a lot of sequel just aren’t it.
Back to the 3D modeling, it was beautiful. It just fit in, it just worked, it blended in you didn’t even notice that the 3D modeling and the 2D aren’t on the same plain. They interact with eachother perfectly unlike a lot of movie *now* that still can’t master that, flicking through eachother and late movement doesn’t make it seem real but treasure planet it just, works

I will never get over 1900’s Disney the stories were amazing, all the female protagonists had personalities besides just being cute and quirky, the art was just drop dead gorgeous specifically the background art and the villains were actually evil instead of having some backstory that makes them sympathetic, i would also argue that the movies were more interesting artistically especially Sleeping Beauty, the illuminated manuscript and medieval art style is just lovely. I wish that Disney would put the same effort into their new movies and create new stories instead of just creating live actions of every movie under the sun. Personally idc if we only got one movie every once in a while as long as they were the quality of the previous movies. Not to mention that 2d animation is much easier to achieve now than it was back then. Like can you imagine if encanto was in 2d animation and had a more distinct style.
