何必诗债换酒钱 - Notes

Clean version here and thoughts under the cut.

I saw the song translation notes made by @shelterfromrain a while back and thought, wow! what a fantastic idea it is to share the results of the rabbit holing (that you inevitably end up engaging in when doing this) and leave a record for your future self while at it too! Currently some of the song and poetry translations on fwoopersongs do have little notes, but those were casually written on the fly and after so long, the thought process behind certain choices often get forgotten, which is such a waste... Long story short - I’m doing it this way from now on!

This song was requested by @peerlesssqq on twitter - which may or may not have bumped it up by like a year on my list (yes, I’ve been sitting on it since 2018 and you’ll see why) - and I had WAY more fun than expected, so 谢啦 ~ It was a delight to receive your DM request. I was happy for days!

Some background: 《何必诗债换酒钱》 is the theme song of 【文定乾坤】- a collection of musical works that feature notable contributors to Chinese literature in ancient times, poets and the like. Oh, and I did notice that the MV on bilibili looks like it could be a promo for a webtoon or game. Who knows? I’ll be checking out the rest of the songs, that’s for sure!

The following part of this post will be my thoughts for first the title, then each section - the intro, verse 1 & 2 and the chorus, ending off with some final comments.

Disclaimer first though (otherwise later you read already then feel like beating me up): Everything in this post is only my interpretation of the song. I have quite limited familiarity with mainland literature and culture, so of course don’t expect much xD Here you’ll only find a story-loving banana who jiak-ed kantang too much in her youth and now regrets it a whole lot. 说好了哈 I’m pants at analysis, worse at Chinese, and am not at all good with words ok?

Title

So《何必诗债换酒钱》, let’s start off with the word here that’s unfamiliar to most of us:

诗债 | shī zhài or a debt of poems/poetry debt is a legit thing! - All you authors and artists out there might be familiar with it - It’s what you call the resulting debt when a poet promises to write something for another person but hasn’t done it yet. Procrastination has apparently always been the curse of content creators.

In fact, in the Bai Juyi’s poem that came up on the 诗债 baidu page《晚春欲携酒寻沉四著作先以六韵寄之》- possibly addressed to a friend he owes - he was complaining of illness, old age and writer’s block. But then oh, he goes on and then I passed by a party where they had drinks, and was quite up to my gills & totally out of it for some time, and THAT’S why I’ve done you dirty and owe you ever so many poems. I don’t really understand the last two lines but apparently he then offers to bring a drink for this person he’s talking to, mentions a wish to meet a winter goddess (????? pretty girl? or the snow? idk which), and starts reminiscing the times that were like a precious string of pearls they had singing at Yang Pass. Most likely farewells, but without context I just don’t get it. Anyway bribery and misdirection huh? I see what you did there bro, and I’m sure the person you attempted to distract saw it coming too...

何必 | hé bì, is a rhetorical question of Must you really? In the case of this word, 何 functions as roughly ‘is it that’ and 必 as ‘it must be so’.

换酒钱 | huàn jiǔ qián is of course, exchange for money to purchase wine.

‘Must you really promise poems in exchange for money to buy wine?’ then is the literal translation of 何必诗债换酒钱.

So here is the question: Is alcohol worth a poetry debt? Onwards to the answer!

Intro

生就诗骨算来三百篇 Born and already a poet to the bones, (with) three hundred works counting up to now.

浪掷秦淮长安风流李杜王白 Spending lavishly in Qinhuai and Chang’an, free/unrestrained as Li and Du, Wang and Bai;

余下十分便随意肩上担 whatever left is divided in ten parts, casually thrown over a shoulder

权作金玉铜板相谢好人间 and taken for jade, gold and coin, a big thank you to this good world!

I interpreted the 生 in the first line as 天生 i.e. innate, natural born talent, so this first line describes someone born with a gift for poetry with ‘three hundred’ works to their name. Although... that three hundred should not be taken too literally, it’s more likely to be an allusion to collected works like the 16th century anthology of poems, Three Hundred Tang Poems. After all, Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei and Bai Juyi are the most famous Tang Dynasty poets… and they were all name-dropped in the next line!

浪掷 | làng zhì was a new phrase for me, and means something like spending freely and lavishly or willfully wasted. Of course Chang’an was the capital during the Tang Dynasty and it was the world's most populous city at the time. One can only imagine how prosperous it must have been… and what fun things were there to spend your money on! The banks of Qinhuai river and that general area was once a gathering place for noble/wealthy families, scholars looking for a good time (and some say, the red light district xD). Though by Sui/Tang, that area was no longer doing as well due to political shifts. So the mental image I got from 浪掷秦淮长安 is of someone gallivanting through places of interest, from the bustling and prosperous to the dilapidated.

风流 | fēng liú is as always, hard to translate with no full equivalent in english. The feel it gives me ranges from, ‘cool, dashing bloke on a galloping horse with their cloak/robes/hair flowing elegantly in the wind’ to ‘pleasure seeking dandy who totally knows how to enjoy life, all the courtesans know him by courtesy name!’.

The third line started with 余下十分, which will not make any sense - why leftover? Divide what by ten? - until its put in context with the following:

Three hundred poems 算来三百篇 + 权作金玉铜板 pretend they are gold/jade/money (权作 | quán zu�� just means to take one thing for another temporarily.)

Spendthrift behaviour on tour 浪掷秦淮长安

The TITLE: bro so u wanna promise poetry in exchange for money to drink? why.

Let’s take those precious poems that can be exchanged for gold - a whole bagful of scrolls, and now I’m so rich I can scatter my money down the streets of entertainment districts and the capital! The very image of a 风流 poet, reckless and free spirited.

// Folks, please learn from this silly girl and do not read songs (or poems) line by line. They need to be appreciated at a distance, not one inch from your eyeballs.

Verse 1

两分与月劳烦身前打点 Two parts to the moon, (may I) trouble you to take care of me while I’m alive.

哪处巍峨峰峦当借我悬来观 Wherever there are majestic peaks and ranges, do lend me (your light) to hang and see by.

三分典高楼好与长风赴宴 Three parts pawned for the tall building, good for attending the banquet alongside the wind,

遍寻可爱星子唾手一把玩 searching for charming little stars, easily caught to play with.

Now we get to see how the poet is spending his ‘wealth’. This verse is a lot more literal as compared to the introduction, so there’s not much to say.

打点 used here is so interesting! Because it’s what you call bribing someone in a superior position to smoothen your path ahead (so to speak). Thanks to a childhood of tvb drama, I vaguely associate the type of people who would 打点 with rich merchant or minor noble fathers who want to give their sons an easier time at court. Either that or lower ranked officials with less moral scruples. Anyway, what’s being said in the song is something like: here is 20% dear moon, I’ll have to trouble you to bless me for the rest of this lifetime, and also please lend me your light to see by when I have need of it at scenic spots *for art*. The moon is a muse for many poets in all its forms after all… 明月, 圆月, 孤月, 残月, 冷月, 江月, 秋月 and so on.

Actually that whole sentence 劳烦身前打点 is so playful and fun that I put it in quotation marks to emphasize it. We’ve only just begun. Is the speaker already drunk?

And with the third line, 30% has been spent. Just noting here that 典 | diǎn can be read as pawn or mortgage. Another interesting thing to note would be that this imagery of ascending a tall building 高楼 and reaching out for stars 星子 in the last two lines of Verse 1 brings to mind one particular poem, famously attributed to Li Bai. Following translation by yours truly.

《夜宿山寺》- Overnight at the Mountain Temple 危楼高百尺 | dangerously towering a hundred feet high 手可摘星辰 | the stars are within reach 不敢高声语 | one dares not raise their voice 恐惊天上人 | for fear of disturbing the deities

Though the two probably have nothing to do with each other, doesn’t the reverence in the tone of this one bring out the playful irreverence of the other? So. Much. Fun. I adore the whole feel of 遍寻可爱星子唾手一把玩 SO MUCH.

Verse 2

两分与桥歇脚南北行船 Two parts to the bridge where travellers on foot and by boat from the north and south can rest,

欣然八方风物闲话半日茶碗 delighted by the scenery all around, idly chatting half the day away over bowls of tea.

三分典流水润色枯瘦石山 Three parts for the running water, moistening the gaunt stone mountains

又将天地一展伸手试浓淡 and again spreading heaven and earth wide, reaching out to test the viscosity (of the water).

It took a few listens, but in the end I really enjoyed the aesthetics here. And again, this verse is quite straight to the point albeit with two things I cannot understand.

The first point of confusion for me is why the lyricist chose to use 桥 | qiáo, a bridge as the place for people to rest on their journeys. I assumed here that this in reference to a pier or dock, assumed also that he is donating funds for this structure to be built or repaired. However, if that were the case 坞 | wù would have been enough - 船坞 was supposedly invented only in the Song Dynasty though, so maybe that’s why another word was chosen. But it’s not like there is any incidence of 桥 being used to mean ‘dock’ either!

The second thing that confuses me is the use of 典 for 流水. In verse one, that 典 was referring to the poetry works sold to reserve the venue for a banquet. That usage was apt. Here I suspect it might be for parallel structure, because there is no alternative reading for 典 that might allow one to use their 30% 三分 to do anything to flowing water 流水. That’s the literal reading, of course.

If we’re taking this a little less literally, it can be interpreted as borrowing the scenery (figuratively, since the place would not belong to anyone in the way you might own a property) to admire. It also expands on the second line’s mention of the surrounding view 欣然八方风物; there is running water which completes 润色 and brings the appearance of the gaunt and rocky mountains 枯瘦石山 closer to perfection.

润色 | rùn sè means to polish, to bring to greater heights. When you say something has been 润色 it is made more brilliant and closer to perfection by that addition. It can also mean moisten.

We always hear ‘rivers and mountains like a painting’ 江山如画 - originating from Su Dongpo’s《念奴娇·赤壁怀古》- used when the scenery is wonderful, because how often is real life as ideal as what we can imagine and depict? And that is exactly what is described here. The feeling out if the ‘water’ is concentrated or diluted 试浓淡 is used in answer to 一展 unfurling. 浓淡 of ink to 一展 of painting scroll. The land and sky seem like an ink wash painting, so beautiful that the viewer cannot help but reach out to run their hand through the water.

Chorus

Chorus Part 1

若趁游兴直到酣 If we take advantage of our wanderlust and go roaming till it is sated,

千字文章不值钱 classics and essays shan’t be worth a coin.

诗换花词换雪 A poem for a flower! A song for snow!

再作檄文斗天官 Another denunciation for those heavenly officials!

Starting off with three new terms for me: 游兴 | yóu xìng means enthusiasm for travel. 酣 | hān can mean having a great time drinking, or being very satisfied and satiated. 檄文 | xí wén is a type of official document written for important announcements, declaration of war, or denunciation and condemnation of certain people or actions.

While I still feel this need to go out to see the world, I shall keep on the road until I am satisfied. Who cares about writing, who cares for study, it’s all worthless to me. I do what I want. And what I want is to write a little poem in exchange for a flower, some lyrics for a flake of snow. I’ll even write a denunciation against those officials in heaven (immortals). Fight me!!!!

I point again at Verse 1 with climbing the tower to play with stars. It’s no longer just playing nearby, now he wants a go at the gods.

Among the four parts of the chorus, this one is the simplest for sure. The lines mean exactly what is said. It also feels the most chaotic and mischievous. Is the speaker drunk? Is he high on something? One thing’s for sure. He’s out of money.

Chorus Part 2

何愁不得一样我 Why feel troubled that (I) cannot have another just like me?

知交尽向话中添 for one who understands you and is understood, look entirely towards stories to fill that place

唐解元嵇中散 people like Tang Bohu (first in provincial examinations) and proud, upright and stubborn Ji Kang

且驰大梦任疯癫 Just chase that great dream, allow yourself to go mad.

I feel like the first two lines are quite straightforward, though they might not appear so on first reading: How could there be a need to feel sad or troubled that I have no like-minded equal. To find a true friend who understands you without need for words, and whom you understand in return, all you need to do is turn to those tales and stories 话中 for people to fill 添 that place.

唐解元 - People like Tang Yin, courtesy name: Bohu 唐寅, 字伯虎 (1470–1524 AD), noted painter, calligrapher and poet of the Ming Dynasty. Tang Yin led a life full of ups and downs that really cannot be covered in a paragraph’s worth of song translation notes. You can check out his wiki page if you’re curious though! There’s a little more on him where I cover the last line of this section. He is addressed as 解元 | jiè yuán here which is the term for the top scorer of the provincial examinations (second stage in the Imperial examination ladder). It is also an honorific for scholars. Tang Bohu is both.

嵇中散 - People like Ji Kang, courtesy name: Shuye 嵇康, 字叔夜, (223–262 AD), one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove - a group of friends who wisely kept themselves aloof from the dangerous politics of the Court, and devoted themselves to art, refinement and debate, of the Three Kingdoms period. He was a Daoist philosopher, musician, writer and poet.

An accomplished musician, the qin composition 廣凌散 | guǎnglíng sàn is attributed to Ji Kang, though some versions of the story claim he learned it from a ghost while stopping at a pavillion on his way home. 嵇中散 was one of the names he was known by because of his appointment to the position of Attendant Counsellor, 中散大夫 | zhōng sàn dàfū, a civil official unspecified duties in the court of Cao Wei.

When Ji Kang was sentenced to death for his attempt to testify for a wrongly accused friend, three thousand scholars petitioned for his pardon to no avail. It’s said that at the execution ground, while they waited for the appointed hour, he had his favourite qin brought out and played a brilliant interpretation of Guanglin San that is now forever lost.

Do go read about them both if you have the time!

I would like to point out for the last line that 任 is to allow, to indulge, and it’s just such a heady sensation to say 任疯癫 - indulge in the madness! throw yourself in and don’t look back!

There is an easter egg here too. A nod to a poem by Tang Yin which can be read as his stance on his lifestyle choice after the alleged accusations of bribery in the final step of the Imperial examinations left him disgraced, and unable to pursue a civil career. Thematically the line does not call back to the poem at all, similarities end with the choice of words: chasing the dream 驰大梦 and indulging madness 任疯癫. I leave an excerpt below. Translation again by me.

《桃花庵歌》- Song of a Plum Blossom Cottage // 若将花酒比车马 | if tawdriness and wine were compared against fine carriage and steed 他得驱驰我得闲 | he would have to drive and work hard for speed whilst I have my idle rest 别人笑我太疯癫 | others mock me for my madness 我笑他人看不穿 | i am amused for they do not perceive 不见五陵豪杰墓 | can’t you see that at the Emperors’ mausoleums and heroes’ graves 无花无酒锄做田 | there are no flowers, no wine, only land ploughed for farming

The second part of the chorus isn’t related to the first, but it has the same theme of showcasing the untamable (unhinged xD) spirit of the speaker. This time, the people he admires ‘intellectual equals’ and kindred spirits are featured, the 任性 feeling here has been pushed to greater heights.

Chorus Part 3

敢夸洒落何须酒 If one dares to boast of carefreeness, why, they hardly need wine.

不煮黄粱也称仙 Even without brewing millet they would still be called Immortal.

镜湖桌白梅盏 The tables in the mirror-like lake, white plum blossoms in the cups,

等来春风恰开宴 await the spring breeze which arrives just in time for the feast to start!

Li Bai is regarded as both the god of poetry 诗仙 and god of drunkards wine 酒仙 because he wrote some of his greatest poems while drinking. The first two lines seem to be gently poking fun at that. Like hey, if you dare to claim to be all groovy, surely you have no need for alcohol? Just like how an immortal would still be an immortal without wine, your writing talent should not need any stimulants. This would be the time to mention that 黄粱 | huáng liáng is also known as millet, a type of grain that can be used to brew wine.

洒落 | sǎ luò has a few meanings, like shower down or blame, but the relevant one here would be 洒脱 generous, uninhibited and open. For me it feels similar to 风流 in that there is that ‘free, and exhilaratingly unrestrained’ element. 洒落 is in the most positive sense, being always open to having a good time, but without that dissolute or vaguely whirlwind-romance like connotation of 风流.

It feels like the intensity is letting up a little here - this is a light-hearted and frivolous song all the way through, but the words 洒落, 称仙 and imagery of a clear lake, white plum blossoms and the crisp spring breeze are grounding and sweet. Spirited in a different way from before.

Chorus Part 4

四角天地也醺然 The four corners and heaven and earth are also tipsy,

醉极自有桃李搀 when I’ve overindulged, my students will be there to help.

快意只笔下讨 Gratification can only be claimed from beneath the brush;

何必诗债换酒钱 is falling into poetry debt worth that money for drink?

New words: 醺然 | xūn rán just means drunk. A new word for me though! 桃李 | táo lǐ is literally peach 桃 and plum 李 (李花, also known as 玉梅) flowers, and is a metaphor for students. The term originates from a story in 《韩诗外传》which was set in the Wei Kingdom of the Spring and Autumn period (771 to 476 BCE). There was once a highly ranked official who was sacked from his post and left for the north. He met another gentleman and remarked that the people he helped before did not lift a finger when he was in need. This person replied that, if someone were to plant peach and plum trees in spring, he could relax under their shade in the Summer and taste their fruit in the Autumn. But if that person were to plant weeds, nothing can be done with their leaves in Spring and there would only be burrs to hurt himself on in Autumn. Clearly the people the unfortunate gentlemen had helped before were not worth his effort. Students ought to be carefully selected and carefully cultivated as one would a tree.

Reading the four corners and heaven and earth 四角天地 are also tipsy 也醺然, I imagine the world sort of spinning around the speaker because he is drunk. But that’s okay, because his students (or the trees xD) will be there to support him.

快意 | kuài yì is the feeling of sudden relaxation, and then lightheartedness and joy. In this line, I felt like the intention would be closer to 畅快，爽快 and so chose gratification, because really writing is like scratching an itch isn’t it? Pleasure from satisfaction of a desire. Phrasing it as 笔下讨 is so very fitting though, because 讨 can be interpreted - somewhat contradicting - as either to demand or to beg. What could be more gratifying than having squeezed out the perfect sentence or word under your figurative pen?

So so so after all that, 何必诗债换酒钱? What do you think, is alcohol worth the poetry debt? Is Mr. Poet actually drunk and about to dig himself a deeper hole of owed poems to get even MORE drunk, or has he just been thinking about it all along? :)

Thoughts

This has been such a fun adventure following our madcap big spender from the shining Chang’an to the inviting Qinhuai, shadow of great poets in tow and all. We’ve done everything from talking to the moon and seeing the sights by her light, to boating down a river, dragging fingers through the water. It was sort of like being on a backpacking tour, except with with someone contemplating opening (or perhaps regretting opening this can of worms?) poetry commissions instead of singing in the streets?

5 Revolutionary Ways to Start Living Tiny Right Now!

Living tiny is more about the attitude of living sustainably than the actual house itself. There are many people who have a sort of backwards mentality that say “Living tiny will allow me to do these things,” when they should start living tiny well before then. Others may believe that they can’t downsize because they have children and a family to take care of. If you wait to start living tiny, when the time comes you are ready to downsize, you are going to find it much more difficult to accommodate. So if you want to be ready, or even just see if you are able to live the tiny lifestyle, here are some ways to get started living tiny right now!

Get Rid Of EVERYTHING

Ok, let’s be real, no one can get rid of everything. But you have to be honest with yourself. When you cut down your home to a tenth of its size, you are downsizing 90 percent. That means that you have to get rid of about 90 percent of everything you have. Now, of course you don’t want your home to look bare, but you should know EXACTLY what you are keeping and what is being donated, thrown out, or sold. Especially your clothes. Choose one rack in your closet and put everything that you are going to wear on it and no venturing away from it. I will bet you can do it and not even realize it. These are tough decisions and it is going to be really easy to say, “I still really like this shirt,”but you have to push through. Get rid of any extra dishes. You can only eat from one plate and drink from one cup at a time. If you have a family, keep one plate, cup, bowl, and set of utensils for each member. Better yet, get rid of it all and buy BIODEGRADABLE plates and utensils. Keep a few cooking utensils like a good knife or a stirring spoon as well. You don’t need tons of pots and pans or a drawer full of measuring cups (unless you do a lot of baking). The number of dishes you’ll have to wash will be minimal and you can save a bit of water too. This may seem like a lot, but that is what it takes!

Move Into Your Living Room

Live in the LIVING room? What an insane idea! You can’t cook or go to the bathroom there, but everything else you do happens in there. Eating, sleeping, watching television, hanging out, storing clothes, etc. Living in a tiny house is about combining and eliminating wasted space. Your dining room is used for dining, your living room is used for lounging, and your bedroom is used for sleeping. Now you have to do that all in the same space. This is a brilliant test to see if you are in your spouse’s/family’s hair and how neat and clean you are. Because trust me, when you have to live in the same place where you sleep and eat, you will be cleaning up daily. Do you want to take this to the next level? Invite friends over for dinner and game night and keep the same rule! Now that is tiny living!

Shop More Often

In addition to having less space for clothes and belongings, you are going to have less space to store food. People who live in major city apartments may already be used to this, but for those of you that have a gigantic fridge and an extra freezer in the garage, you are going to freak. Take note of everything in your pantry and other food storages that has been in there longer than a month. Don’t throw it away because food waste is already a problem. Consider donating what you haven’t used or make meal plans to use it. Now, only use 20% of your cabinet space and 20% of your fridge and freezer. Maybe use less if you don’t have kids. This means that you are going to have to stop shopping at bulk stores like Costco and you are going to only be able to keep staples and small snacks in the house. Try planning your meals a week at a time, then go and get the proteins and specialty foods the day of. Make sure you have left yourself the extra time to do so. And the extra money, because you can no longer buy things in bulk. But considering how much food that sits in the pantry or gets thrown away, you may actually be saving money.

Make The Leftover Space Useful

Well, since it’s there, it’s hard to just ignore the empty rooms in your house and it may seem just a waste of space. So what do you do with it? The mind’s the limit here! What have you always wanted to do but could never find the time or space for it? Dedicate it to being your art studio or a plant nursery. Make it your exercise room and get started on that new year’s revolution you always put off. It could be your meditation space, separated from all the problems of the world. My personal favorite though, would be just to rent it out to someone who could use it. The rent crisis is out of this world right now, and there could be one more person living tiny without having to build or buy property. Tiny homes are relatively cheap but still, not everyone can afford them. Use Only One Bathroom

You’d probably want to choose the one with the shower in it. But less bathrooms means less places you have to clean. It also means less time to get ready in the morning if you’re sharing it with others. You might consider taking your showers the night before which could even allow you to have extra time to sleep! Every one needs their space. Moving into such close quarters, even with members of your family can get a little crazy. If you do get stir crazy or on each others nerves, head outside. Last Chance to Make New Year’s Resolutions Come to Fruition: Spring Equinox Message!

Abstract: Spring Equinox this year also coincides with the coming of Aries season and the astrological new year. Thus, making new beginnings and commitments have much more momentum right now. Make the changes you wanted in your life, the universe supports your goal!

With all the crazy and chaotic energies happening in the world, don’t we all want our lives to move forward? Yes, it can be quite frustrating to be stuck somewhere all day, especially when we have been used to having a lot of activities outside. But instead of thinking that cabin fever sucks, why not use this chance to make lasting changes? Especially with the Spring Equinox coming tomorrow, March 20, 2020 (equal day and night time that signals the move towards spring and summer), this is a great opportunity to make and keep new year goals and resolutions that seem to be evasive since the Gregorian year started. And by Gregorian year I mean the start of 2020.

It is also very important to note that not only is tomorrow the earth starts shifting towards longer days and shorter nights here in the Northern Hemisphere, and longer nights and shorter days in the Southern Hemisphere (showering love to everyone through inclusion), but tomorrow also coincides with the beginning of the new Astrological Year as well as Aries season, so that’s quite a double dose of energies that can push forward the major bulldozing and removal of everything that no longer works, relationships that have grown stale, previous ideas and beliefs that feel so alien because these no longer reflect the wonderful person you have grown into, and all the things, material or non-material that have been sucking your high vibrational energies dry and have been causing you so much unnecessary stress. Seriously, despite the disease scare** across the world, getting even more stressed will only affect the immune system even more negatively by reducing the production of White Blood Cells (imagine: Less Macrophage waifus in your body. Or if you like Killer T’s or our good old pal Neutrophil-sempai yeah sure. Lol I love Cells at Work - Hataraku Saibou so yeah, I am doing my best to make things light here) so might as well take precautions on the personal level because that’s the only thing each person can have almost 100% control over. Other than that, I think this is a great opportunity to revamp our lives in however ways we want. But if you feel like it’s already too late to start anew and go over your January goals...

YOU’RE STILL FINE, LET’S DO IT!! We still have a big push to start this thing!

So ditch the guilt for not starting early enough, you’re gonna be OK because for the next 5 days the Equinox energies are here to help all of us (believers or not) move forward to our new life chapters as well as into the new decade. And it’s a great wave that we can all catch and reap the benefits as well as the rewards from.

But hoooow?

Well, I am glad you asked. What is wonderful about these energies is that aside from helping us move forward with what we want, we can also better align with the higher vibrational versions of our selves aka HIGHEST SELF so that we not only can make personal goals that we absolutely want to happen, but also next-level goals, the divinely-guided ones that can steer us into the person we were supposed to be. These are the goals that can shape and transform us and our inner world. And spoiler alert: these are not all earthly goals. Some of these can be goals that you never expected to even think of dreaming to achieve. So you might wanna think about that too.

Thus the next 5 days starting from the equinox is a great way to start meditating (if you haven’t already) and asking the universe, source, god, friendly star entities, whoever and whatever you consider your higher power to provide you guidance on what you need to do to grow into the person who shines their light in these dark and tumultuous times. And be open-minded on what answers will pop up. Ponder and meditate on those too. Just feel free to play with whatever you pick up while you meditate: visions; smells; sounds; textures; tastes; the whole gamut of feelings available.

But what if I don’t have any unfulfilled goals right now? I started them all and finished more than half before January ended.

Then you are amazing! Honestly. And what better way to celebrate than making a fresh new inner self, because that part of you that already achieved your goals is for sure wanting to set new ones, maybe more flexible and chillax visions of you. So you still would benefit from getting an inner-self revamp and goal revamping or revisiting.

How to do this?

Also simple. Here are some suggested steps:

List all of your new year goals

Tick the ones that you accomplished

Write your feelings when you accomplished them

See if it’s a goal that can get better through an upgrade (eg. saved x amount of cash. next goal can be save 2x amount of cash), and lastly,

Ask yourself: Is this goal worth upgrading or is it worth making new goals?

If you feel deep within your heart that upleveling your goal is worth it because you know 100% that you’ll feel so happy and fulfilled doing it, then please do, by all means! Any and all forms of growth and development are wonderful, and that’s also going to improve your skills in the long run. Who knows, you can grow into an expert in that field too. So yeah, I support you!

But.. What if a considerable chunk of what you did and accomplished didn’t give you the amount of satisfaction that you were expecting to receive? Or, you felt drained?

Don’t despair, my friend, because all of those activities ARE NOT IN VAIN. These are not a waste of time. Why? Because at the very least, they’re great lessons made especially for you. It just means that your inner self just wants to get more out of life, and you’re starting to yearn for bigger goals. Maybe goals that you haven’t thought of doing yet, or goals that you kept shoving in the back of the oven. Or it is also possible that you just need to expand your comfort zone, or do stuff you haven’t done before but were always chilling at the corner of your mind. It is also possible that you just need to do something new, just to feel alive.

Whatever the case, a breath of fresh air is what the doctor recommends. And you can definitely benefit by harnessing the incoming Equinox energies! Aside from asking the higher dimensional realms for extra guidance and support. I mean, any form of support and cheering is better than none so why not take this chance as well? What is there to lose?

If you’ll ask me, you can only gain newer perspectives. Newer ways of solving things. Newer ways of looking at things. Once you’ve crossed that path, you can only go forward, because neural networks get rewired each time you CHOOSE to change and EMBRACE everything that goes with it. Basically BECOMING the identity instead of just seeing yourself as someone who does things is a better goal because by BECOMING, it becomes who you are as your own personal choice. For me, my personal identity is a life-long learner who learns to improve my personal life and other people’s too. Yeah I got this idea from Vishen Lakhiani, it makes so much sense to me because I was already doing identity shifting even before he coined the term. Fun 13 years that was, and counting. So it’s both borrowed and personal, I couldn’t care any less lol

Of course, changing things just when things are getting settled can be very, very unsettling. For me, even if I am open to changes, it can still get really annoying. I already started going out of my comfort zone as advised by my higher self since November last year, and it’s not as easy as I wanted it to be, because I had to purge so much stuff, more than my body could ever handle. I also started to purge inherited emotions, ideas, patterns, karmas, and all that garbage that I have been holding onto energetically, because aside from not being for my highest good, these things have held me back because deep down, I KNOW that I can do more and be more. I am B-MO lol but really, aren’t we all B-MO? =D

I wish I wasn’t kidding when I kept saying that it wasn’t easy making changes. Honestly, it wasn’t. We’re hardwired to be habitual creatures, it’s in our DNA, and by going against our instincts and relying more on intuition can feel like swimming upstream, up a waterfall. Also, I have a stubborn streak (a Saturnian gift which I am doing my best to be happy with), which can really get in the way of instilling new habits and schedules, especially just implementing a weekly Kundalini meditation to clear off energies and learning new stuff. Another thing that is tripping me up right now is adding my paypal donation link below each post, which is pretty much divinely-guided and right now I am hoping that some magic can happen, one way or another. It felt uncomfortable but I also chose to do it, even if a tiny part of me, the fearful one who wants me to stay in poverty consciousness is guilt-tripping me even until now. If I could just obliterate that part of me so that I can let abundance come in, I will do it in a heartbeat. And right now I am still in that process so wish me luck to succeed.

** I personally believe that the “pandemic” is nothing more than a scare tactic instigated by uhm, “you know who” (Voldemort? Sauron? lol) because based on some of the statistics which I have been doing my best to read, the disease only affects susceptible members of the population aka people with weak or compromised immune systems, especially people around the age of 60 years and above. Also I am miffed that many reports kept focusing on number of deaths instead of adding very pertinent info such as total number of cases, demographics of suspected and infected individuals and number of deaths versus total number of cases with full age demographic of the entire population of infected individuals as well as the entire population structure of each country. I am basically saying that a lot of things should be considered before making rational or irrational choices or procedures, because any incomplete info or analysis can affect decision-making and make matters worse. I believe it’s called looking at all options including past events and how these were mitigated and assesing all possible ways to create solutions. Seriously, deciding out of hightened emotions and under fear can create more horrible events. Try deciding from a place of confidence, peace, love, and gobbling a lot of information and regurgitating that information to create BETTER solutions. Sheesh.

As with most of the diseases out there, proper hygiene and personal responsibility are still the most important things each person can do to control ALL COMMUNICABLE DISEASES. And in my own, personal opinion, some other viral and parasitic diseases have more lethal effects because ALL members of the entire population demographic can readily die from it without proper detection and care. Think HIV, Dengue fever, trypanosome diseases, malaria, etc.. Just my two cents on this whole thing. But if you disagree then it’s fine. I still love you OK? I guess I am a lot more passionate than I should be because I love studying epidemiology and pathogens and how these things can be controlled, plus some background on cell signalling and formation of cells helps a lot. I wasn’t kidding when I said I learn and apply what I learned to help myself and other people, that’s a large part of my personal identity. =)

Already November! Time flies. It has been a good year though. I’ve felt more social and started making new friends, reconnecting with old friends, planning events and parties. I love to host parties. Would give anything to have a bigger house. This one is a little cramped. VERY cramped when I invite most of my friends over at the same time. lol

Anyway, i’ve really enjoyed getting back to my social self. When I was my teens, I loved parties, and loved hosting parties even more! I got with Nathan when I was 20 and he wasn’t a partier all that much. I settled down, practically turned into a recluse, and lived that way for about 10 years. I let go of all my party friends, because I was trying to get out of that lifestyle.

I became the crazy cat lady from being the fun party girl. lol I took in way too many cats than I could honestly take care of. Dogs, too. Got into animal rescue, though I ended up keeping most of them. My house was impossible to keep nice or even clean really, with that many animals. I fell into a depression, which caused me to recluse even more. My bipolar seems to have gotten worse. I was in a rut for years.

My oldest brother died in 2010. I started wanting to get away, to drink and just forget. And that’s what I did. (went really wild as a teenager after my Dad died when I was in my teens. My coping mechanism I suppose. Then, I met Jerry not long after my brother died and we became really close. He was my best friend for 2-3 years, until we tried to date and I realized he was a manipulative, controling, abusive asshole. Then, I started going out even more after that break up. After my Mom died, I didn’t go completely wild. Maybe it was because I was living alone in my clean, comfortable home. More stable. I did meet Mark not long after she passed, and did impulsively go out of town to meet him for the first time, in the middle of the night after I left a bar. lol So, maybe I went a little crazy. Turned out for the best, though.

Birthdays in November... I need to remember to send a card to my cousin Alissa, I always forget. Then, i’m seeing if James is busy next week, it’s his birthday. He’s alone and he did something special for Mark’s birthday. Brought him really nice cupcakes from a bakery. So I really want to do something for him. If he’s not already planned anything, i’ll ask him if there is anyone he’d want to invite. I just found out that Cassie’s birthday falls on Thanksgiving this year, so I need to get her a cake. I hope i’m not leaving anyone out for November birthdays.

I’ve got to do something about my weight. I take pictures, from an upper left angle (except most aren’t extreme angles anymore), and I love the way I look. I feel so pretty, from my pictures. But then, I see myself in the mirror and i’m often disappointed. I see myself in a picture someone takes of me, and my day is ruined. I end up in tears and feel huge, ugly, like a freaking monster. I don’t want to feel that way anymore. I know i’d be so much prettier, even with just 50-60 pounds gone. If I lost 100, i’d probably never leave the mirror! lmao No, but I would be happy with pictures people take and my self confidence would be through the roof.

It’s a shame that i’ve wasted all these years being fat and having nearly 0 self esteem. Now, if I lose weight.....i’ll be starting the aging process. About to turn 40. I wasted my youthful, pretty years.

But HOW am I going to lose this weight? It’s so hard. Some of my health conditions cause weight gain and make it difficult to lose it. Some of my meds do the same thing. I’ve had a couple doctors trying to get me to go off the meds, but I won’t do it. They are my psychiatric meds, and I NEED them! Nope, nope, nope. I’ve been craving soda and drinking way too much of it this past week. That’s not going to help matters. I’m going to have to cut down on soda intake and watch what I eat, a bit more than I do now. And, I need to get active. Not just for weight loss, for my diabetes too. Really need to start going to swim at the ymca 2-3 mornings per week, at least. And, sometime on most weekends, since it’s the only time Nathan can go. Would also like to starting waking at 6am and go for a walk. The walks will be super short for a while, because at this size it kills my lower back and legs. But, anything is better than nothing. I hope I can get into a better routine.

I’d so love to lose 50 pounds by Summer, when we go back to Wyoming and to the beach. Confidence, I need it back.

I need to clean this room today, it’s a complete disaster. Trying to get Mark to help me. It will be nice to be able to walk through the room normally. To have my side table cleared and organized. Be able to organize and decorate my makeup table, be able to access and organize my jewelry again! I feel chaotic in my mind when things are out of place. My problem, i’m a perfectionist. I want everything to be perfect. And thats hard to do now that i’m not living alone. So, when it’s not perfect I lack the motivation to clean. Complicated.

I WANT MY HOME 100% ORGANIZED!!!!!

I had all rooms organized a while back. Perfectly. Except the bedroom. But people want to leave stuff laying around and/or put things in the wrong places. Leaving me to have to get up the motivation to do it all over again! Oh, not to mention people leaving trash laying around. My biggest pet peeve!

I wonder what really happens when you die. People are always saying they will see their loved ones again one day - but how do we really know that? It seems like wishful thinking. Something will tell ourselves to make death feel a little less permanent. I mean, i’d love for it to be true. But noone truly knows. I guess it IS a comfort to tell yourself that. But what if death is just death. Nothingness. You just no longer exist? What if everyone who dies is trapped on Earth for eternity. Purgatory. Or hell....punished for all of our “sins”. Because EVERYONE sins at some point, nobody is perfect.

I wonder the same about God. How do we really know there IS a God? How? We pray, and most of our prayers remain unanswered. Did someone just make up God and Christianity to make themselves and some others feel better? Feel not alone.

I lean more toward Wicca in my beliefs. But even still, how do we know the Goddess/Gods even exist? I don’t know. Just something I was thinking about.

Speaking of which, I was talking to my brother Neil the other day. We had a great, long conversation. I didn’t want to get off the phone. EVEN during the “Rhonda” part of the conversation (long story, may blog about it another time). lol One thing in our convo that stood out.. He told me that my Mom told him she was a witch. She practiced withcraft a little before I was born. I don’t remember her ever telling me that. She did tell me about a couple witches back in the family bloodline, though. I feel i’m a natural born witch. Strange things have happened, i’m had visions that come true. Dreams and nightmares that later actually happened. I’ve been drawn to witchcraft my entire life.

I tried Christianity. I really did. But it never felt right. But i’ve hidden my beliefs for years and will probably continue to do so for the most part, living in this area. After talking to a few friends about, i’m surprised to find people accepting of it and some even interested/consider themselves a witch or Wiccan.

I’ve been even more interested in witchcraft and Wicca after meeting another witch. She’s a natural born witch, too, not someone who converted to the religion. We have a strong, spiritual bond. I’ve been embracing my spirituality a bit more lately. I feel like i’m not so alone in my beliefs.

I like to believe there IS a higher power. I just don’t know exactly what I believe.

I’m getting tired of blogging at the moment, will be ending this in a second. Still have things running through my mind, just tired of typing. lol I think i’ve been in mild manic state for quite a while. It’s better than depression at least. Ok, I have a little more to blog about after all. lol

I need to figure out what i’m doing (lawyer or not) and file for disability again. Being married, i’d only get $400.....but there is a lot I can do with $400 that I currently do not have. I’ve been donating plasma to have a little spending cash. And I would probably continue even if I get approved for SSI, it’s a good thing to do, and hey, extra money, ya know? But with $400 a month, I could buy some clothes and decent thing that I want but can’t afford right now. Save what I can save. Have an emergency savings, which I so desperately need.

I was thinking the other day about our neighbors. They are awesome. Danny is a good guy, a good friend. The neighbors on the other side seem like really good people. They even surprised us by mowing our lawn once while we were away. I want to make something. Banana bread, a cake, maybe cookies and give them to both neighbors. Show them that we appreciate them. Good neighbors are a blessing, we are lucky. We have neighbors a couple house down that seem cool, too. They are different. Unique. I guess kinda alternative or punk style. I’m wanting to invite them to one of our get togethers soon.

Not sure if we’ll be having a get together this weekend. If everything goes as planned, Cassie, Dena, Crystal and I will be going to Cherokee NC Saturday. Cassie wants to meet a guy she knows online. It will be fun, if it works out for us to go. :) If we get back in time, may drink a lil Saturday night. Or maybe not. Idk. I think the guys plan to have a friend or two over while we’re gone. Guys night and girls road trip. lol I may see if Cassie would wanna let her brother Matt stay here with the guys, so it’s truly a girls trip. That, and I think it would fun for Matt. He’s young, but that doesn’t matter, they could play video games or just whatever.

Then, Sunday, we (Me, Mark, Nathan, Crystal and Sierra) or making another road trip, to go see my brother. I want to see him, it’s been a while, and at the same time, I want him to meet Crystal. I told him about her, and about the feelings and things, the other day. He was shocked, never had a clue that I was bicurious. lol He’s supportive of it, though.

Mark’s tried to be supportive too. It’s a little different for him. And we talked, he has been worried that i’d completely fall for her and leave him. That’s not going to happen. It’s not a one or the other kind of situation.

I was cuddly with him in bed yesterday morning, and I asked him if he’d be more ok with it if he was a part of it, if and when it ever turns physical. But he’s only with me. If I ever had an actual threesome, i’d likely lose feelings for him. That;’s what happened with the last time a boyfriend and I had a threesome. That was with two guys, never had a girl/girl/guy threesome. But, I broke up with him right after. I don’t know why my feeling changed. But I do NOT want that to happen with him. He treats me so well, he amazing. What worries me, if he is involved at all, even just participating with me only, will that change my feelings for him, too. I really don’t know. For the most part, my feelings are like a light switch that I have control over. On/off.

Now let me add.............IF I were to feel comfortable with him being there, Crystal would be the one to make the final decision. It depends on what she’s comfortable with. I still don’t even know how I feel about it. If we go there, I kinda wanted it to be just her and I. I want it to be pure an special. She means a lot to me. With a guy, I like rough and wild sex. But I feel that if I were ever to be with her in that way, i’d want it to be a little different.

Now, that’s IF we ever explore the physical side of things. I am curious about it, and I honestly think i’d better good at it. I’m a very oral person. But I don’t know if it may feel......awkward? I don’t think it would be, as close as we are. I don’t even know how she feels about going there. I don’t know how I feel completely either. I’m thinking I may be comfortable with it at some point. But, at this point, i’m content with the way things are. Spending time together, holding hands, a little kiss here and there. It’s new to me, and new to her, but it feels right.

If/when we ever do... I think it would be nice to go in together on a nice hotel room. One with a jaccuzi tub would be a nice touch. Flowers on the nightstand, rose petals on the bed, champagne with strawberries, candles, soft music. I want a special, romantic night. And if we get there and we chicken out (lol) on making love, we could still cuddle and enjoy the room, spend time alone. I’d miss Mark for the night, but it would only be one night. I strongly prefer our first time to be just US. As far as after that, still undecided.

In one way, it would be nice to involve him. It’s one of his fantasies, I believe and truthfully i’ve had threesome fantasies before. Though, with us it wouldn’t be an actual threesome. It would be she and I and him and I. I’m just afraid it will change my feelings somehow. But I feel so close to both of them, it might still feel special with both of them, idk. I don’t want him to feel left out, pushed away. This is just complicated as crap! Oh well, we will figure it out in time.

I want to plan a romantic hotel night with Mark sometime, too. I’ve been wanting that for so long. I always hoped he would plan something like that for me. I guess i’ll be the one planning it. Would be more special if he did, though. Nathan even offered to pay for the room for us at one point. Which was sweet and surprising. Wish when I was with Nathan he would have done that kind of thing for me more often. I remember getting jacuzzi sweet one time, but i’m pretty sure it was my idea? Not totally sure.

I wish Nathan had been more affectionate with me back when we were together. I don’t think we would have fallen apart the way we did. (BUT, I wouldn’t have met Mark, so I do believe things happen for a reason). He was never very affectionate, he never caressed my skin, tickled my back or anything unless I asked. And even then, could tell he didn’t want to and would conveniently fall asleep while doing so. lol

Mark, he’s very affectionate. He’s often wanting to hold my hand or cuddle, or both. Kisses, caresses, often without being asked. He likes to rub my butt..lol Makes me feel wanted. He’s an amazing guy, I love him so much. He’s the only guy i’ve been with who is that affectionate, other than my first fiance when I was 17. I loved how affectionate he was, but he turned into an abusive jerk. Mark, he’s never been abusive toward me, he hardly even gets angry at me, doesn’t yell at me. I hit him at one point, unfortunately, and he didn’t hit me back. We really don’t even fight. We rarely get a little aggravated at each other. And it’s already been 5 years.

I feel bad about the way things happened with Nathan. I didn’t treat him the way I wished I had. I was pretty good to him, but not good enough. We had our problems. And then his lack of affection made me feel more like we were friends than lovers. I am happy that he’s still in my life, and hope he always will be. But I do wish I could go back and fix a few things. I had a hard time handling emotions and stress, I was not being treated for my bipolar, so that didn’t help. All those animals kept us stressed, that was a huge mistake.

Mark keeps falling asleep, I wonder why he’s so tired today. Hope he’s not getting sick. I planned to donate today, but I think i’m going to do it Tues an Thurs instead. Need the money though, there is a pretty white floral dress I want, it’ like $22, a good deal. I figure it would be a good dress to wear for Easter. Yes, I tend to plan way ahead. lol But, it’s so pretty.

I got my black hair dye last night. I and re-doing the underneath black, and maybe put a few streaks throughout. But, my roots are already showing, so i’m probably going to wait until I recolor with red. I got a really light blonde for Sierra’s highlights and burgundy for underneath. If her grandma sees it, she will bitch like she did last time. lol I personally think it looks good!

Ok the situation is as follows: I am selling my car for a new one. I have asked my current insurer to transfer my policy to the new car which is fine. 31st October

So here it is, Halloween itself. I know I am a few days late, but I have been pretty tired recently, too many late nights. I don’t think I will even be able to finish this post in a single session, I am too tired and there is probably more to write about than the others as this was the most interesting so far. So I get home from work, eat, shower and get dressed. Asylum shirt with pretend blood splatter on and basically a streaked red handprint going down my face. I actually got a few comments from people while I was out, so I assume it looked pretty cool. I drive to Chelmsford to meet some strangers to play board games at a Pub. Probably sounds a lot like my previous Saturday, but this is a pub, so a much more public event. Once I get there I sit in the car for a while and observe a man arriving and carrying board games into the pub, so now I know I have the right place for sure and can even identify one of them. Something seems very wrong with this though, I am going to go in a pub, approach a big group of strangers and ask if I can use their stuff and sit with them. I felt like this about that Saturday, but once I was inside they knew exactly why I was there, it was a private event, no chance of me being a customer etc and that Australian guy was awesome and made me feel welcome immediately. Eventually, I get out of the car and decide to go in the front entrance, as the group is by the back entrance and I want to scope them out first. So I go in, order a drink and some nuts, get a comment from the barman about my costume and, casually eat and drink while observing the group. There are at least 10 of them, maybe more. Some of them are proper adults, as in they could be my parents. No one looks really strange, I decide it is not for me, finish my drink and leave. Back in the car I decided it would be a waste to drive home now, it is Halloween and I am dressed up. I proceed to go to a dating site and trying and get random girls who happen to be online and live in Chelmsford to come out. Weird and kinda scary I know, but hey I’m mental. It doesn’t work surprisingly enough. I start looking to see if any other events are on in Chelmsford that I could go to and then I check my Facebook messenger. This girl is online who I have been Facebook friends with for a while, she wants to College with someone I know. I know she lives fairly close to Chelmsford as it is her main place for going out, so I decide to see what she is up to. She isn’t doing anything as she is saving up for a holiday she has planned for December. She says she needs to do some shopping though, so I often to drive her to Tesco. I arrive, she gets in the car and although her lack of fear and caution around me is surprising, everything is fairly normal and she directs me well to Tesco. Once we get there though she starts talking quietly at times, I ask her to repeat it as I didn’t hear it and she says that she is working out how much money she needs or is planning her day for tomorrow etc, this is a commonly repeated event. Now I talk to myself, mainly at work to help me maintain focus, but I wouldn’t do it in public in front of a stranger, but there is nothing wrong with it as such, just rare. As we are shopping she tells me about her friend who drove into a deer tonight and has ruined his car and got a few cuts/bruises. She phones him to ensure he is ok, then she decides to buy him some sweets and a beer. A bit of a random choice, but it is a nice gesture. OK, getting tired, I think I will continue later.

So we get to the till where she buys 6 or 7 items but refuses to pay 5p for a bag, so awkwardly carries them in folded arms. On the way back to the car she starts making random panicked noises, I ask her what is wrong and she tells me that she has phone notifications, but cannot see them.... Well duh, your hands are full and your screen is off, wait till you get back to the car. I proceed to donate a plastic bag to her to stop her attempting to carry all the items in the same fashion again. She asks if we can stop by her friends' house to drop off the beer and strawberry laces, when we get there she leaves her bag, phone and all the money she got out of the ATM in my car. I just find it odd how much trust she places in someone who is almost a complete stranger. On the drive back to her house, she stops a sign on the pavement above a box, telling me she likes to see what people sell in those, I reverse and put on my full beams to read it, no sales, they are just offering free apples from their tree. About three minutes later as we are getting out of the car, she says “Oh that was a good time”. What was? I ask. “I’m remembering a time I and one of the other girls from work took the kids out on a trip to a farm. There were 20 kids and a farmer gave us some apples, but there weren’t enough apples for each kid to have one, so they had to take a bite and then pass it around.” Is it just me, or is that story just a bit too mundane to be something that you bother to tell someone else, or even remember? She invites me in for a coffee, I am a bit hesitant, but she tells me her mum is home, so I decide the invitation is as innocent as it seems. Her mum is terrified of me though, apparently due to my costume, and reminds me of this frequently. I think that fact a strange six-foot skinhead you have never heard of before turns up to your house late at night added to it quite a bit though.

Very have a very sweet, small white fluffy dog, I forget his name now (it is 12th November, so almost two weeks ago now), but he was cool and probably the most normal. Her mum has the TV on very loud as she is apparently a bit deaf and is not wearing her hearing aid. She turns it down for a bit when we first arrive, but randomly turns it back on at times, almost in a sign to the girl, to take his strange guy away and talk to him elsewhere, it is not a sign she takes though. I am getting a bit lazy now, basically, she swears at her mum a bit, arguing about money, which is somewhat uncomfortable. When her mum makes her go outside to smoke, she tells me that her mum is a heroin addict and always gets to take it in the house. Her mum looks horrified and neither laugh. Eventually, she makes me the coffee and while trying to do it, forgets where things are located like she doesn’t even live here. She tells me about her planned holiday, calling it her 5th lone holiday over and over, but she isn’t going alone and judging by the description of her previous 4, she has maybe flown alone once or twice, but only to meet someone elsewhere, she has never had an alone holiday.

She also tells me that since she doesn’t have many friends and those ones she does have, have children, she frequently goes out alone. At this point, I do feel bad for her, but it is almost as if she doesn’t have feelings about it and is just informing me. The same way, when she reads twitter posts, she exclaims loudly how funny they are, but never actually laughs. If we she didn’t work with kids I would think maybe she has some form of social disorder, I really could not work her out. I actually thought she might have been drunk and when I finally get home, I message and ask her if she has had anything to drink today, apparently not a drop, completely sober. This girl apparently frequently goes on dates and then doesn’t hear back from the guys again and often wonders why. She looks like Marylin Monroe, so I have also wondered, but now I think they probably are just very confused by her, even I am and I like to think of myself as being rather socially aware and astute.

Selling life insurance, annuities, disability insurance, health insurance, and related products and services during a Washington meltdown, when it’s August, to consumers who are sure they will live, and be healthy, forever, is brutal work. Most of the remedies traditionally recommended for that kind of stress are terrible for you.

Humor is much safer, and less fattening.

Humor can also help you reduce the underlying level of stress, by creating beautiful little crevices in the stone walls you’re banging your head against. If a little light can get through, maybe you can get through, too…

Apparently the old saying “Laughter is the best medicine” has a lot of truth to it. When we laugh, our body releases stress and breathes in a bit of peace. But what makes a great joke? What kind of power is unleashed when your audience laughs?

We’ve written compilations of all sorts of jokes before, from great accountant jokes to jokes about insurance. But what about harnessing the power of a joke to close a sale, without getting yourself into a world of hurt? Is that even possible?

Ian Adams, sales manager at Yesware, says it is. In his old, much-mourned blog, The Senator Club, he recommended that sales-minded joke-tellers use the same approach that professional comedians use: Know your material without hesitation, talk as if you’re telling a short story, and avoid laughing before or while telling the joke.

Adams goes on to suggest nine short jokes to close that deal.

4. The Texas salesman

A keen Texas lad applied for a salesman’s job at a city department store. The store was the biggest in the world and sold everything under the sun.

At the interview, the boss took an immediate liking to the lad and told him he could start the next day. “I’ll come and see how you made out after we close up,” the boss said.

Then he said his Honda Civic probably wouldn’t be able to handle the load, so I took him to the vehicle department and sold him a new GMC 1-ton pickup truck.”

“You sold all that to a guy who came in for a fish hook?” the boss asked in astonishment.

“He didn’t come in to buy a fish hook,” the Texas boy explained. “He came in to buy a box of tampons for his wife, and I said to him, ‘Your weekend’s shot. You might as well go fishing.'”

The top toothbrush salesman at the company was asked by his boss how he managed to sell so many brushes. He replied, “It’s easy” and he pulled out his card table, setting his display of brushes on top.

He told his boss: “I lay the brushes out like this, and then I put out some potato chips and dip to draw in the customers.”

He laid out his chips and dip. His boss said, “That’s a very innovative approach,” and took one of the chips, dipped it, and stuck it in his mouth.

A young salesperson peeped into the office of someone who looked like a sales manager, muttered something then started walking away. After retreating a little he seemed to change his mind, seemed to head back to the door, where after some hesitation, he started to back away again. The sales manager, feeling sorry for the young man, and surprised that he was so badly trained, called him in.

“You’re a salesman aren’t you? What are you selling?”

“Sir … uh … yes … I’m a salesman. I’m sorry to bother you. I was selling insurance, but I’m sure you don’t want any. Sorry to have wasted your time.”

11. The simple salesman

A minister concluded that his church was getting into serious financial troubles. Coincidentally, while checking the church storeroom, he discovered several cartons of new Bibles. So at his Sunday sermon, he asked for three volunteers from the congregation who would be willing to sell the Bibles door-to-door for $10 each to raise the money the church desperately needed.

Peter, Paul and Louie all raised their hands to volunteer for the task. The reverend knew that Peter and Paul earned their living as salesmen and were likely capable of selling some Bibles, but he had serious doubts about Louie. Louie was just a little local farmer, who had always tended to keep to himself because he was embarrassed by his speech impediment. Poor little Louis stuttered very badly.

But, not wanting to discourage poor Louis, the reverend decided to let him try anyway. He sent the three of them away with the back seat of their cars stacked with Bibles and asked them to report the results of their door-to-door selling efforts the following Sunday, which they did.

Eager to find out how successful they were, the reverend immediately asked each of them how they made out selling the Bibles.

Proudly handing the reverend an envelope, Peter replied, “Father, using my sales prowess, I was able to sell 20 Bibles, and here’s the $200 I collected on behalf of the church.”

Paul, smiling said, “Reverend, I am a professional salesman and was happy to give the church the benefit of my sales expertise. Last week, I sold 28 Bibles on behalf of the church, and here’s $280 I collected.”

Louie silently offered the reverend a large envelope. The reverend opened it and counted the contents.

“What is this!?” the reverend exclaimed. “Louie, there’s $3,200 in here! Are you suggesting that you sold 320 Bibles for the church, door to door, in just one week?”

Louie just nodded.

“That’s impossible!” both Peter and Paul said in unison. “We are professional salesmen, yet you claim to have sold ten times as many Bibles as we could.”

17. Heaven or hell?

When a young salesman met his untimely end, he was informed that he had a choice about where he would spend his eternity: heaven or hell. He was allowed to visit both places, and then make his decision afterwards.

“I’ll see heaven first,” said the salesman, and an angel led through the gates on a private tour. Inside it was very peaceful and serene, and all the people there were playing harps and eating grapes. The salesman was sent to hell, where he was immediately thrown into a cave and was chained to a wall, and he was subjected to various tortures. “When I came down here for the tour,” he yelled with anger and pain, “I was shown a whole bunch of bars and parties and other great stuff! What happened?!”

18. That’s a lot of soap

Finnegan returned to his old home town on a visit. While he was there, he looked up his old friend Hennessy, who ran the general store. SOLIDARITY FRIDGE – ONE NEIGHBOURHOOD, ONE FRIDGE @ THE WASTED CITY BOOK

We all create staggering quantities of waste; it’s become inherent part of our daily lives. But this waste creates large environmental and economic challenges for cities. In steps Solidarity Fridge (Nevera Solidaria in Spanish) – an ingenious response to the problem of food waste, developed on the street of Galdakao; a village neighbouring Bilbao in Basque Country, Spain. In the fifth entry to our Wasted City interview series, CITIES’ independent researcher Alex Thibadoux interviews Ainhoa Crespo Gadea of Solidarity Fridge to find out more about the initiative. To start, can you tell me a little bit about what you do with Solidarity Fridge?

So we started with GBGE, that is our association. Galdakaoko Boluntarioen Gizarte Elkartea. It is like a volunteer association in Galdakao that is in charge of the food distribution of the needy neighborhood. We started to see things with food. We started to see that there were many food that we couldn’t give because of its best-before date or simply because fresh food could be ruined (we only do the food distribution once a month). We only could give like cans, dry food and hygiene products. So we started to think, and Álvaro, who is president of the association, thought about the possibility of like a… a trash can, like a trash bin where we can put food inside. But it was not a usual trash can, it was a fridge, but converted into a trash can. So we put the pilot project in Galdakao, in our village. We went to the city council. We explained the project, and surprisingly they were in favor of the project, and we started to make a study and so on. We had a permission of 3 months. We put the fridge on the street for 3 months, and we saw that it was a real solution in our village. So the network started to grow up, and here we are. Nowadays we have like thirteen fridges all over Spain, and we want to expand it to other countries. We are working in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and USA, among others. It is our dream.

How many people work with the organization right now?

We are like 120 volunteers. It is volunteers. I mean sometimes we have 5, sometimes we have 10. It is people who work in other things, and they help when they can, but we are more than 100, yes.

So you don’t work on it full-time?

Yes. Nowadays, we are 2 people working here full-time (as volunteers, I mean, we do not receive any money for it). There are 4 people more who work in other jobs but come to our office every day. We are growing and increasing our team.

Are you working with any other partners or organizations?

Yes, we work with the food banks, but they have another thought of the project, because the food banks are created for needy people, and our project is not for needy people. Our project is for everyone. We want to break the stigma of the poverty and we think that our first purpose is to not throw away food. The person who puts food in today can get it tomorrow. You have two positions, and there are no people who take and people who leave. Everybody does the same. So the food banks, it is difficult for them to understand this, because they think if a rich person goes… It is not our problem. We always say something… “no hay nada más excluyente, que hacer algo para los excluidos.” In Spanish, it means like there is nothing more discriminatory than making something for those who are discriminated. We want to make a collaborative network and start to think in another way. That is it. We started to work with an electrical appliance brand here in Spain. They wanted to collaborate with us, but finally it wasn’t viable, so we didn’t. We ended it.

How are the fridges usually acquired? Is it through donations or do they raise money?

No, usually they are donations. They are second hand, but sometimes we have to… we did crowd-funding to do one for one minute, but finally a neighbor gave us one, but that is a purpose too. It is not to buy a new fridge. We have to use second-hand things, no?

What are the biggest problems you run into as you expand into other communities?

OK, yeah we have a lot of problems, because it is difficult for city councils and the health service to understand responsibility exception, or something like that. That is difficult to understand for the health service, but we have a really big, good point. It is that in Catalonia, the public health service supports us, and they want to do it in a legal way.

So when someone wants to start a fridge in his village, they usually call us, and we go to the city council and ask for permissions. We need two permissions. The public occupation one. The permission that allows you to use the street, because the fridges are on the street. This is usually easy to get, because it is like vending machine permission. It is the same. First of all we have this permission and the other one is the health service permission. This second one is a little more difficult to get, but when the city council sees that we had two years of the fridge and nothing bad happened in our village, it is like a guarantee. I mean we have been working two years. Nobody has died, nobody has gotten ill. Nothing has happened. There is no vandalism. We have to believe that people are good, because sometimes the argument is “oh if someone puts poison there” or something like that… we have to believe that people are good, and then start making projects. Our first challenge, as you ask me, is fear, people’s fear. People are afraid of this type of project because… I would recognize that it is brave. Something different. There are other countries that have had problems, like in Berlin. They were a little bit controversial and so on. I think that if we have fear, we can do nothing.

That is a nice way to think about it. What would help you the most right now in functioning as an organization?

We need more people. We need more people because we are 100 people, but 4 or 5 people full-time, but we have a lot of work. Because this is not our only project. We have 4 other projects. We have the Solidarity Fridge. We have the food distribution, that is our first step. We have cooperation works in Greece with refugees, and we have another one in Mongolia with disabled children, creating schools and so on. We are few people for this project and sometimes I think we need more help.

How do you communicate to all of the volunteers? If you need to talk to the whole community, how do you all keep in touch?

We, as volunteers, communicate with each other through a Whatsapp group. Nowadays, we are 120 people on it. We exclusively talk about things related with the Association. I think in social projects, the thing is that we have to create a network, a network between everybody. We have contacted with other people who make similar projects, like Fruta Feia. It is in Portugal. It is a huge project that rescues food that isn’t going to be sold because of its appearance. Fruta Feia, it means ugly fruit. So they prepare these casopas where people cook this ugly food and they eat it on the street and so on. So I think these kinds of projects, and us, have to be together. In every step we do, we have to be together, and sometimes this is difficult because we are a lot of people, a lot of projects, and we have different minds.

How do you imagine the project in the future?

Our aim is to create a solid network. Our slogan, or something like this, “one neighborhood, one fridge.” So it is easier to install fridge in a little village. Because we are aware that to install one fridge in New York is really difficult, because it is really big, in Manhattan for example. If we started to install them in little villages to create community, I think it will normalize this kind of thing. People in 20 years will start to see this fridge in the street as something really normal. I have soup and I have surplus, so I go downstairs and I put it in the fridge. And tomorrow, I am late for my dinner, I open it, and I take another thing. To start creating another way of thinking. We are aware that this is not the solution of anything, but it is the first step. These little things are the things that change life, that change our reality.

Have you had any problems with having a fridge outside that is not supposed to be outside? Anything like that?

You mean on the street?

Like with the fridge getting wet or anything like that?

No, no, no. Because we have thought about everything. We did a really hard study with five principle actors. First of all our association, people of our association. Second one, an electrician, who was in charge making a paper with the instructions of how to start the electrical part of the fridge. So every time someone puts a fridge, our electrician checks it. It is not a person, like a company that supports us in our project. They do it for free. We send them photos and they say it is good or it is not good. We started too with a food investigation company business, something like this, that help us make the first project to present to the council. They were the people who really helped us in making this real. It is our support. We have this study. If something happens, we have this paper to us all. We don’t usually have problems. The only problem that we have is we don’t get the permission. Once the fridge is on the street, there is no way that there is a problem, because the fridge is not alone. It has like a wooden structure. The fridge is not on the floor. It is like 10 cm up with a pallet. A material that is resistant to water.

How many more fridges are in development right now?

Nowadays we have 13. We are working on like 10 more. Next week we are going to open one more, the other week, another more. Another eight in February. We will have like 20 fridge, I am almost sure. And we are working with other countries as I tell you before, like in Mexico and Argentina, but it is more difficult, because we know really, really good our law. The Spanish law. Starting to make the project in another country is really difficult, we have to have a lawyer that is in our association that is studying everything and talking with people there, but I think we are going to get it.

Great. Have you ever tried to get funding to be able to do this full-time or do you see it always as a part-time project?

As an association, no, because we have a lot of projects that are really important to us. I mean we are a volunteer organization that does a lot of projects. Because I have told you the four big ones, but we do a lot of things in our village, like the Solidarity Dinner or a Solidarity Market. We have people and we do a lot of things. Solidarity Fridge is maybe the more famous or more curious maybe, but we have a lot of projects that are all important for us. But with the people, the individual person, we need people in full-time. As this project is starting to grow, it is growing in the past months, we need to have people full-time. Not one or two, more, like five people full-time. Eight hours a day.
