Ho fuck this is long
Ok so like. I made a fucking mistake. I wrote an essay for my creative non-fiction class. We had to write a Lyric Essay. simple enough. it's whatever. I transcribed parts of my journal. it was fun. HOWEVER, I made the mistake of telling the class that I did some heavy editing to get rid of some unconventional grammar I use cuz internet, ya know? this was 3 days ago. jump to today. I wrote a 7-page essay trying to briefly explain SOME of the grammar conventions that have evolved alongside the internet. I had to explain this to a group of 40+ year-olds. so NOw I present this to you, o Tumblr. for the love of god let people read this and add to it, I spent eternally too much time on it
So "Internet English" or "New English" is a linguistic phenomenon that centers on conveying tone and different connotative meanings through informal writing. Linguist Gretchen McCulloch actually released a book on this called Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language.  Her book actually is really interesting (I highly recommend it) and covers some of what I'm going to be talking about today. In the first section, she compares the process of learning literacy to be similar to learning how to talk solely through exposure to formal writing like speeches, screenplays, audiobooks, etc. You miss all the nuances of informal speaking. Well, the same is true for written language. Before the Internet, informal writing was extremely hard to come by and even harder to study; even letters, postcards, secretive notes and the like were still written fairly formally because there were no mass text-based communication practices. Now, we have this vast intangible library of infinite knowledge and human interactions, making the necessity of informal writing more prominent. As such, internet users, especially people from my generation, have evolved a subset of written English to better express connotative meaning through the use, abuse, and misuse of capitalization, spacing, spelling, punctuation, incomplete sentences, and more. Let me show you a little of what I mean.
Capitalization
Capitalization is a common convention used to convey emphasis, although which type of emphasis that is changes based on how the capitalization is used.
Random Capitalization is meant to grab Attention and express that Something is Very Important or should be Stressed by Your Inner Voice when reading.
ALL CAPS IS MEANT TO SIGNIFY A VAST INCREASE IN VOLUME, THOUGH IT IS OFTEN INTERPRETED AS SHOUTING. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE.
a crescENDO IS MEANT TO SPECIFY VOLUME AND/OR IMPORTance for one segment. It is often used to EXPRESS GROWING EXCITEMENT!
CaPiTaLiZiNG a RanDoM AsSoRTmEnT oF LetTerS ConVEyS SaRcAsM oR a MOcKinG TonE.
I cannot really articulate why but this, thIS, tHIS, and THIS are all different. This is called Varied Capitalization and can apply to any word, though I most often see and use it with articles.
not capitalizing anything in a sentence is an excellent way to express a monotone voice that seems very apathetic towards everything and everyone. "oh look. john and i went to the store. how exciting."
Spacing
Spacing Conventions are less common, and ultimately there is only one that I find noteworthy. Spacing out letters in a word like r e a l l y conveys that the word is significant. It takes up more space than really and thus needs to be stressed. It is also important to note that this convention is often coupled with full capitalization. There is a significant difference between "I am really hungry" and "I and r e a l l y hungry" and "I am R E A L L Y Hungry"
Spelling
Spelling, like Spacing, is less varied than some of these other conventions. The most common spelling convention you are likely to encounter is the Intentional Misspell. This is used to express one of two things; you can discern which by the context of the rest of the message. It can be used to display excitement. The misspell conveys a kind of excitement that interferes with dexterity, like how your hands shake after a jump scare: "gyus I just swa A Quiet Place  an d it s one f thr svsriest movis I've ever seen." The other emotion the Intentional Misspell can convey is much more subtle and complicated. It is the sense of false apathy. it is nit uncommun to putf a typo in everyr other werd or so to shwo yu don't realy give a fukc but yiu actually do. This is much harder to discern and your best bet on understanding this half of the convention is context clues.
Punctuation and Lack Thereof
Punctuation is, in my opinion, the best, most diverse option for conveying a specific kind of tone. There's a lot to cover here, so I will do my best to keep it brief.
A full stop is a short sentence with a period. It is meant to be read in a scolding tone. The usage of this is especially important in text message and chatroom settings because you can signify the end of a sentence by sending the message. A good rule of thumb for the tone is that the shorter the message, the more scolding the tone.
Putting. A. Period. Between. Words. Conveys. That. The. Matter. At. Hand. Must. Be. Taken. Seriously. This is simply the act of emphasizing each word with a full stop.
not having any punctuation or capitalization at all makes for a very fluid reading experience yes the sentences can get mixed up but those who read and write this way regularly can discern separate trains of thought if you've noticed the lack of capitalization you may recognize one of the earlier discussed conventions it is important to note however that the monotone voice of that convention disappears with the punctuation
Question marks now signify an upturn in the voicing of a statement rather than forcing something to be a question. now you may be asking yourself "why would they do this." The only answer I have for you is "it just seems right?" the upturn signifies a tentative statement while the flat delivery of the question signifies frustration or bafflement.
Punctuation Frequency is meant to signify the amount of severity accompanying the statement. This is exclusively used with question marks and exclamation marks. A common example is extending the simple “what?” to “what???????” Notice the difference? The same thing can be done with exclamation points. Note the increased excitement between “The baby was born today!” and “The babe was born today!!!!!!!!!!!” These, of course, can be amplified even further by incorporating some of the other conventions we’ve discussed previously.
Exclusive Punctuation is a convention most commonly found in messaging systems, but it is still important. “???” is an expression of pure confusion. If you were to receive this message, that whatever you sent the person prior has left them amazed, confused, flabbergasted, awe-struck, bewildered, and more. On the other hand “!!!” is an expression of pure excitement and glee. The best description I’ve seen for this is that it is a noise of happiness.
While there are dozens more grammatical conventions, these are the primary ones that a vast majority of people will use. It is time to move on.
Ellipses
Yes. This is punctuation. But it elicits its own category. Ellipses are great tools for signifying that there is more to this statement than meets the eye. However, there are now multiple types of ellipses that have different meanings.
Periodic Ellipses or Hard Ellipses are just that. Hard. Say I were to text someone “Hey can we talk after class...” The ellipsis generates a cold tone that has some worrying connotations. Something important to note here is that the length of the ellipsis can signify severity, though after a certain point it becomes superfluous and silly. The only friendly usage of a Hard Ellipsis is the Two-Dot Ellipsis. “Hey can we talk after class..” is far far less sinister than “Hey can we talk after class…”
Commatic Ellipses or Soft Ellipses are just that. Soft. Instead of being composed of periods, these ellipses are composed of commas and have a vastly different meaning. These are meant to convey either worrying or flirtatious tones. To go back to our previous example, “Hey can we talk after class,,,,,” is going to be read in a flirtatious manner. However, “Hey can we talk after class,” is going to be read worryingly.  The trick to discerning the different tones is the length of the ellipsis. Three commas or less conveys a worrisome tone, whereas five or more conveys a flirtatious tone.
Sentence Structure
Look! We’re almost done! There are many people who will play with sentence structure to convey meaning but the most widespread practice is the Incomplete Sentence. This one is actually fairly straightforward. Leaving a sentence incomplete expresses exhaustion (either emotional or physical) and adds a sense of trailing off in the speakers voice. I mean, have you ever started a sentence and then just
Noun/Verb Dichotomy
Ok last one. This one is also pretty straight forward, though still quite complex. The Noun/Verb Dichotomy is simple the act of using a noun in place of a verb to get your point across. For example, a more expressive (and in my opinion more accurate) way to say “I like to get a midnight snack at 2 in the morning” would be “I like to velociraptor around my house at 2 in the morning.” The second conjures such a specific image that it can more concisely convey the actions and emotions being done. The possibilities are endless. This opens up the door for someone to sentence how they want. Although many people will get a headache and want to clothesline into a wall. These all make sense to a native speaker of this kind of english because, while our brains do brain logically, english doesnt logic englishly so the brain brains by itself to logic the english!
So that is my mini-lesson on Internet English. please remember I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what’s changed.

What Am I Doing This For?
To be completely honest, I had a less-than-satisfactory practice today. It was crowded on the freestyle, so I decided to do small figures, only to realize that my back and left leg were just not having with the speedy twistiness of the small figures right then. I got off the ice ten minutes before the session was over (which I consider sacrilege) when my leg just up and quit working normally, choosing instead to behave as if it had been suddenly possessed by the soul of a sloth.
This is not an uncommon occurrence. Well, the sloth thing is, but me being in so much pain I can barely understand what my coach is saying or remember which figure I’m skating happens at least 25% of the time these days. It’s a disc thing. Not much to be done about it that I’m not already doing, aside from cortisone shots, which I can’t afford.
I sometimes wish I were one of those people who bears pain with silent dignity, but for better or worse, I am instead one of those people who talks about it. And I’m going to stand by my belief that that’s OK. Because pain is real, and it’s not glamorous, and it’s part of being an athlete---particularly an adult athlete.
And boy, did I have a lot of it today. So much so that I thought it would be good for me to write about what keeps me going, and who and what I am doing this for.
I’m doing it for myself.
I’ve said this before. I love skating, and I particularly love figures. There’s something very satisfying about the symmetry and the striving for perfection, and the crunch of the ice under patch blades, and and and... I love them; that’s all. And through figures, I get to meet people I never thought I’d meet, and do things I never dreamed I’d be able to do.
Tumblr media
(An incomplete collection of skating paraphernalia that can be found within five feet of my front door on any given day. Top row: Paper on which Nancy got autographs for me at the 2016 Championships, including those of Trixi Schuba, Gary Visconti, Jan Calnan, and Juliana Sweeney-Baird; a graphic issued by WFS of my 2017 creative figure, framed by my mom. Middle row: Just a picture of me and Dorothy Hamill chilling together at the 2017 WFC like we do, also framed by my mom; a photo of Nancy from Deborah Hickey’s beautiful book; a card from Barbara Wagner; my faithful stretchy gloves; one of my former patch boots, signed by Nancy. Bottom row: Someone’s discarded laces--I have literally no idea which of my 18 past or present patch students they belong to; a blade that was once attached to my patch boots; my scribe; my other former patch boot, signed by Barbara Wagner. So, yeah, maybe I’m into this skating thing a little.)
I’m doing it for figure skating.
I believe that it’s vitally important to preserve figures. More than that, I believe that it’s vitally important for all skaters to do figures. I am a rabid figures evangelist, and if you get close enough to me, I will probably infect you if you don’t have the bug already. Right now, competing and coaching are the ways I am attempting to preserve figures: learning from the best and passing it down.
I’m doing it for WFS.
I really, really believe in what World Figure Sport does, and not just the preservation of figures part. The judges want to judge the figures on their own merits; they don’t want to know who skated what. You are eligible to compete if you are human--and I’m guessing that if another species showed an interest in skating figures, WFS would let them in too. The main thing is really to enjoy figures and do your best. You should have heard all of the competitors in the dressing room coaching each other and asking each other questions at the 2017 WFC. Lisa wrote to me today and said that something I’d mentioned about my own training had helped her fix her rockers. Talking to my competitors has helped me fix things about my skating time and again as well; my patch neighbor, Julie, has great insights. Sarah Jo and I message each other for encouragement/good-natured complaints/advice every few days. Competitors help each other design their creative figures. I told my dad that, and he asked if maybe it was a bad idea to help someone I’m trying to beat. I said we’re not like that; we all want everyone to do as well as they possibly can, and we’re glad to help each other get there. We lift one another up. It makes my heart so happy.
I’m doing it for my students.
I want to share my love of figures with my students (particularly since I require them all to skate them). Also, they are all university students, and usually beginners, and they’re at an age where they’ve heard they’ll never accomplish anything in sports. But they can’t believe that if they see me doing this, can they?
I’m doing it for my coach.
When I told Nancy that I want to be champion one day like she is now, she didn’t tell me I was too old to be that kind of athlete, or that I could stand to lose 30 pounds first, or that maybe my dream would have been possible if I’d been trained better as a kid, but since I hadn’t been, this wasn’t a realistic thing to hope for. She just listened to me and then said quietly, “We’ll work it out,” and got on with teaching me as hard as she could. Just try to keep yourself from wanting to work your feet off for someone like that. It can’t be done.
Also, to be honest, it’s pretty much impossible to give up due to the pain of a mere bulging disc and some moderate arthritis at age 42 after having just watched your coach skate to a world championship win on a broken pelvis and torn labrum at age 55. So there’s that.
I’m doing it for you.
If you enjoy watching me skate or looking at my figures, then I’m doing it for you.
And more specifically, some of you who are reading this might have started skating (or skating figures) “late”--whatever that meant to the person who told you that.
When I started skating the first time around, at 16 years old, most people said I was too old to have any kind of “real” skating career. When I was 22, I got very sick and didn’t skate more than a couple of times between then and the age of 39. I started figures when I was 41. That’s very, very, very late, if you believe what most people say.
It’s not true. It wasn’t true for me, and it’s not true for you either. If you are out there on the ice, you are exactly the right age, no matter when you started. We can only be who we are now, and the great thing is that that’s enough.
I am scared to do this competition. But I’m going to do it anyway. And if it is at all possible, I’m going to keep doing it, every year, until I beat the paragraph loops and rockers and Swiss S into submission and win the whole thing.
If that happens, then someone will have won who never tested figures under the old system, who never competed in skating at all or even had a figures lesson until she was over the age of 40, who had been supposedly “too old” to start skating in the first place, and who was never a member of ISI or USFS.
Ralph Hodgson wrote, “Some things have to be believed to be seen.” That’s the stage I’m in right now. I just have to keep working through the pain and occasional bad practices and cling like a tick to my belief that this can be done.
But it is certainly easier to believe once you have seen. That’s why I want to show you.
If I can do it someday, maybe you’ll see that you can too.

Can California Civil Code 827 be used to enforce mandatory renters insurance?

Can someone explain the difference between Health Insurance and any other Insurance?
I don't understand why people act like health insurance is so radically differently than other insurance. Is it? Insurance is a form of risk management to hedge against loss. Auto, Life, Homeowners, Unemployment and Health are among the types of insurance you can buy. I'm generally not required to buy any of those insurances. If I have the title to my home, I'm not required to have homeowners insurance. If I don't drive a car, I'm not required to carry auto insurance. Why should I be forced to buy health insurance? If I want to take that or any gamble by not buying insurance, isn't that my choice? I will admit that by not purchasing health insurance, I could be putting a burden on others if I was admitted to the ER and couldn't pay, that burden of payment would fall on others. HOWEVER, that burden would be there whether I was forced to carry insurance or not. If I don't make enough money to buy this mandatory insurance, then the gov't will give me tax credits to purchase insurance. Who's paying for those tax credits? All of the tax payers. So either we pay the providers/insurance companies via higher premiums to cover loss, or we pay the gov't via taxes. Forcing (perhaps unconstitutionally) citizens to purchase health insurance won't solve anything, it will just move where the cost is incurred. But please, explain why people are treating health insurance so differently.""

Classic Car Insurance for a 16 year old?
I recently got my license and am looking at getting a Datsun 240Z to be my first car. My parents are completely supportive of this choice so please don't answer saying that it's a terrible choice. I am willing and eager to learn how to work on cars. Since insurance is so expensive, I'm looking at getting classic car insurance for it. I know they aren't supposed to be used for a daily driver, but doing some math, I calculated that I won't be driving for more than 3,000 miles annually, even if I commute daily. My problem is finding a company that can insure me. Most, understandably, don't seem to want to insure anyone under 25. I was wondering if anyone knew a company that could cover me. I currently have a 3.8 GPA and am in multiple AP courses. I've heard that there are good student discounts, so that may help. Also, I need to be able to get coverage without having a second car to be my daily driver. This is probably impossible, but if anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!""

""How much would an insurance company give me to repair Keying damage, three hood dents, and 3 areas of chips?""
My car was badly vandalized about a month ago and i made a claim to my insurance company. I originally decided to take my car into one of their many One Stop shops, where i would only have to pay the 250 dollar deductible and have my car completely repaired. Since then i was laid of from work and have been going through alot of money trouble. I have been considering just having an adjuster come out and write a check for the damages and repair only some of the damage at a friends shop. My question is... how much would the adjuster write off for... Deep key scratches down to the metal, a line all around the car. (20 feet) Three dents on the hood (about 6in diameter) three areas that where hit, and began to chip( about 5in in diameter each) It seems desperate. I know, because i am. Why The Movie Trilogy Is Officially Dead (And That’s OK)
In the realm of movies, the trilogy reigns supreme over lesser kinds of series. Thanks to the popularity of Star Wars, The Lord Of The Rings, Back To The Future, The Godfather, and The Dark Knight, making a self-contained trilogy indicates a sense of vague importance. The trilogy is a craft beer in a sea of Hollywood Busch Lights, and it once stood strong against the storms of cash-grab sequels and spinoffs. A trilogy told a complete story in three movies and left on a high note, before producers could convince the creative types to castrate themselves on the altar of Foreign Box Office Gross and Tie-In Merchandising Opportunities.
The trilogy is such an ever-present concept that even the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which every film is connected to every other film, tends to make its “single hero” installments in series of threes. There are three Iron Man movies and three Captain America movies, and in the near future, there will be a third Thor movie, a third Guardians Of The Galaxy, and two sequels to Spider-Man: Homecoming, because ambition is truly blind. And most pop culture sites deem these trilogies, because hey, three movies makes a trilogy, right?
Columbia Pictures The world begged for another third Spider-Man film, and Marvel listened.
Sort of?
Look, fighting for the integrity of the word “trilogy” is like fighting for the integrity of the phrase “dick salad.” “Dick salad” doesn’t need me to start a war to defend the honor of “dick salad,” because the meaning of “dick salad” just isn’t that important to most people. My quest to apply the word “trilogy” correctly is a lonely howl into the aisles of your local Best Buy. If the word “trilogy” continues to be slapped onto the cover of any three disc set that focuses on one character, but tells a ridiculously incomplete story, my name will not go down in any history books as the one man that planted his flag when all others retreated into the hills of lazy movie marketing.
But if you go into the Captain America films or the Iron Man films, or even the latest batch of X-Men films, expecting a trilogy that you can watch in the same manner as Lord Of The Rings, you’re going to be disappointed at best. At worst, you’ll be monstrously confused. For instance, if you decide to start your venture into X-Men with First Class, not even an hour will go by before parts of the movie refuse to make sense. Wolverine makes a cameo wherein he tells Magneto and Professor X to “Fuck off,” and ha ha that’s funny because he was in that other X-Men non-trilogy, where he most decidedly didn’t tell Magneto and Professor X to fuck off.
That said, when you haven’t been repeatedly alerted to the significance of Wolverine, it’s just a short scene where a random man at a bar tells the two main characters to fuck off and is never referenced or mentioned again. If you don’t want to watch most of the Avengers movies but still want to dive into the Captain America section of things, you’ll be treated to a movie that makes sense, a movie that sort of makes sense, and a movie in which famed hero Iron Man shows up with a few other guys, but they all just fucking hate Captain America. And if your sole pleasure in life is Robert Downey Jr., you’ll get a solid origin story with Iron Man, a movie that’s basically about Nick Fury trying to convince Iron Man to be in other movies with Iron Man 2, and a movie about the repercussions of a movie that you didn’t see with Iron Man 3.
In the grand scheme of things, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is all about building the next Avengers film. So rather than get the most important moments in these characters’ lives, you’re basically getting Iron Man side quests. And that’s not bad, but it’s not a trilogy. In a trilogy, the growth of the narrative and the characters is (hopefully) steady, because you’re seeing the whole story. You don’t have to worry about filling in the blanks with other movies that weren’t in the Blu-ray collection. You get the whole puzzle, and none of the other puzzle enthusiasts have to tell you “Oh, you had some missing pieces? Well, if you put together a few other puzzles, I bet you could find them in those boxes that you have to buy separately.”
And I don’t want to pretend that Marvel has invented some kind of labyrinth that drowns you in continuity if you decided to skip out on Doctor Strange or Ant-Man. The movies do a pretty good job of explaining what went on in the other movies, because they know that not every first-time MCU theatergoer got the chance to obsess over 40 hours of superhero movies before they walked into Infinity War.
MichaelGaida/Pixabay No better time to see a superhero movie than when you haven’t slept for two days.
This also isn’t some kind of weird demand for Marvel to go back to the days when Daredevil and Spider-Man had no idea about each other. Marvel doesn’t seem to take a lot of risks, but it does have a cool thing going. And one day, I will invent time travel in order to tell middle-school Daniel to just stick to the Blade franchise, because eventually he’ll have a Hulk movie that’s worth the ticket price.
However, Marvel did invent a movie universe where if you stick to the “story” of one hero, you lose out on countless major character moments. Their progression becomes a jagged chart of emotional highs, and the movies go from being building blocks in a larger structure to “that one where Captain America was happy” or “that one where Iron Man was paranoid.”
Marvel Studios “That’s my secret, Cap — I’m always paranoid.”
The art of the trilogy isn’t dead. John Wick is getting a third and final installment, and I’m sure that there will be copious future series that tap out after three rounds. But the emphasis on shared universes and having every film be one big Justice League mixer makes it a little harder to get real trilogies. But that’s about it. If you need me, I’ll be screaming at the day manager of a Target for having the gall to wrap all three Iron Man movies together without a warning label.
