“I want you to think of this as another deep cover assignment.” The new Director of NCIS, Leon Vance sat behind his new desk, his hands tented in front of his chin and a toothpick dangling between his lips.
Most NCIS agents and several government officials were at the funeral of the late NCIS Director, Jenny Shepard. This would be the only time Director Vance could meet with the agent without risk of a certain someone disturbing them. The agent in front of his desk stood with their hands collapsed behind their back, face blank as they stared ahead.
“Agent Gibbs isn’t going to be happy about this, Director.”
“His happiness isn’t a factor in this.”
“Of course not, Sir, but no one can deny his talents. He’s known as many things, a bastard for one.” Director Vance let out a snort, leaning back in his chair. “But a great agent as another. He’s going to know something’s up.”
“Agent Gibbs isn’t your concern,” Director Vance said, moving to stand from his seat. He moved from behind the desk, handing the agent a manila folder. “They are.” He went across the room as they flipped the folder open. “Keep your cover intact and your objective unknown, and I don’t foresee there being a problem.” The agent continued flipping through the folder, eyes carefully reading each word of the pages. “If, for any reason, you should think Agent Gibbs suspects a thing, or either of them, you come directly to me. Understood?” The agent turned their head, snapping the folder shut.
“Yes, Sir.”

“Agent Gibbs, meet your new team.” Director Vance handed Agent Gibbs three confidential files. He turned to Agents DiNozzo and McGee and Officer David and dismissed them from his office. They reluctantly left to clear out their desks, thinking hard of their new roles. Agent Gibbs sat down at the Director’s table, opening the first folder.
Agent Brent Langer had transferred back to NCIS, leaving the FBI in the dust. Gibbs furrowed his brow; the two didn’t always see eye-to-eye, or maybe they did and were just too stubborn to back down. Either way, Gibbs knew Langer, and Langer liked to play by his own rules-- the whole reason Gibbs wasn’t too upset when he transferred over to the FBI in the first place.
Gibbs flipped the second file open and nearly laughed. Agent Michelle Lee did have some field training, but according to DiNozzo, she was better suited in the legal department. She was smart with great connections, but she did everything by the book. She was too honest for her own good, and that wouldn’t always, if ever, mesh well with Gibbs.
Flipping open the last file, Gibbs was met with someone he didn’t recognize: Agent Aurora Baker. He held the file away from his face to read her file. Well-liked by her colleagues, the one’s who were able to have contact with her, no disciplinary issues, but deep cover agents get a lot more leeway than regular agents. Out of the three files, hers was the smallest. He didn’t like vague information.
He pushed the files away slightly. He didn’t want a new team. He wanted his team, but the look on Director Vance’s face said there wasn’t going to be a discussion about his new team. At least not today.
It was bright and early the next day when Gibb’s new team arrived at his bullpen. Agent Langer and Agent Lee he immediately recognized. Both stood awkwardly as they waited for Gibbs to speak. He glanced around and spotted brunette hair bent over Ziva’s desk. His hope was crushed when he saw Agent Baker’s face instead of Ziva’s.
She was setting a picture frame when she glanced up, her thin, almond-shaped eyes meeting his briefly. She gave him a quick nod before going back to setting up the desk to her liking.
Gibbs didn’t know what to say to his new team. Suck-up Michelle Lee, fast-and-loose Brent Langer, and the mysterious Aurora Baker. He narrowed his eyes slightly. He hated mysteries.
Or more accurately, he hated change. This wasn’t just an exchange of agents, this was losing a family in favor of agents that seemed to mix together as well as water and oil. The desks had barely been barren for twenty-four hours before Agent Baker had begun making herself comfortable.
Gibbs moved around to his own desk, watching as Agent Baker set more photographs on the desk. She smiled at one picture, a younger version of her with her arm wrapped around a young blonde girl. More pictures from mostly her childhood, several of them with her mother. None of a father. He tilted his head slightly, watching as she ignored his gaze. He turned to Agents Langer and Lee who were still standing awkwardly.
“Get comfortable.” He gestured to the desk. They immediately scrambled to the other two desks, Agent Langer to Tony’s desk and Agent Lee to Tim’s.
Gibbs glanced up to where Director Vance was watching. His face was stone as his hand rested on the terrace, a toothpick in his mouth. Gibbs said nothing but took a seat, watching the agents. Langer was rifling through the few things Tony left behind, putting his own nonsense on the desk and in the drawers. Lee had very little to put on the desk, keeping a bare and minimalistic style, much like McGee.
A sentimental action caught the corner of his eye. Aurora was running her thumb across one of her picture frames, but there was no smile on her face, no hint of fondness or nostalgia. She opened the top left drawer, setting the picture inside before shutting and locking the drawer.
His phone buzzed and he answered it without checking the caller. Abby’s loud screeching pierced his ear, causing him to jerk the phone away. She continued to ramble incoherently into the phone as he glanced around the bullpen. Lee and Langer were focused on their desks, ignoring Gibbs and his phone call.
He turned to Aurora who was staring directly at him, one of her brows raised. Her eyes flickered from his face to his phone, to the back elevator before landing back on his face. The corner of her mouth lifted slightly as she turned to the computer on her desk.
She pulled up a blank document and began typing, watching from the corner of her eye as Gibbs disappeared to the back elevator. Happy was not a word she would have used to describe Gibbs. Perpetually vexed, abnormally quiet, calculating, sure, but not happy.
She opened her bottom right drawer, lifting up the bottom to reveal a secret compartment. She pulled out a manila folder, rereading through the two agent profiles hidden within. She took a deep breath, placing it back into the safety of its hidden spot.
She glanced up to where Director Vance was still standing, toothpick still in his mouth as he stared at her, or more specifically, at where the folder was hidden. She released her deep breath, turning her attention to Agent Langer and Lee. Both self-absorbed enough to not notice her piercing gaze.
One of them was a traitor to their agency, their country, and themselves. She needed to figure out which one it was quickly. News of a traitor could cause a bigger scandal and disaster than Robert Hanssen. And it rested on her to stop it.

OC Name Origins

RULES: Search and post the meaning of your OCs’ names (if you made their name up or they go by a nickname, post an explanation of how it came to you)! Bonus if you can find something for their last name too.
But . . . I've done this one with all of my characters here. So instead, I'll tell you why I picked the names I did. (I’m letting you in on some Easter Eggs here, so take note!)
Alejandra “Ale” Ryder Aragón
Ironically the "named after her father" didn't come up until after I'd picked "Alejandra." I wanted a Spanish name that was kind of long with a good nickname option. I was actually leaning toward "Gabriela/Gabi" or "Daniela/Dani" because I was worried "Ale" (ah-leh) would be read by English-speakers as "ale" (the alcoholic beverage) but I kept coming back to "Alejandra" so eventually I just decided to go with what felt right.
Ariella Shepard
I love the name Ariel. I put an "a" and the end of it because I could. Ariella was the ORIGINAL name of my "proto-femShep" - my very first Shepard - and it only felt right keeping it with the Shepard that got the canon universe.
Donovan Shepard and Lír
Remember those Easter Eggs I mentioned? This is one of them, a nod to Burn Notice. The actor who plays the main character is Jeffrey Donovan. (The main character's name is also "Michael," which is Donovan's middle name.)
Javier “Javi” Ryder Aragón
Honestly, "Javier" didn't get a lot of thought. I needed a Spanish boy name for Ale's twin and I liked the way it sounded. (And I didn’t plan on him becoming an actual, fully developed CHARACTER . . . )
Mara Shepard
When I split up my "proto-femShep" and I needed to name the one that got my Without You series, I decided to go with names by meanings. One of the meanings of "Mara" is "bitter" and it's also Biblically connected to grief. Which, of course, made it perfect!
Veerla Shepard
This was originally spelled Veerle after one of my favorite (triple threat) stage performers, Veerle Casteleyn. The name is pronounced the same, though I changed the spelling to be phonetic because a friend told me they had always read it "veer-lee" (referring to the actress).

I would love to know more about Leah Shepard. She seems a little prickly, but who doesn't love a grumpy OC?
Hehe she is the grumpiest of grumpy Shepards and I will die on this hill.
Leah is my Colonist/Ruthless Shepard. I know, cliché background. She wasn't always grumpy. She used to be so down to earth, she'd always have that smile that would brighten everyone's day. She was a happy-go-lucky kind of gal. She knew what she wanted, she wanted her own ranch and teach children how to ride horses.
Her and her BF Adam were household names, everyone knew they'd end up together, marry, have a household full of kids.
Then the attack happen, and she lost everything, everyone.
She hears them before she hears the gunfire go off. She hears a grunt and sees her mother falling next to her.
"Mom!" She pauses in her tracks before backtracking and bending down next to her mother. Hannah is clutching at her wound, shaking, the blood seeps through her fingers. There's so much blood. "Mom please get up!" Leah cries.
Hannah's white shirt now stained red, "Leah, take your brothers and go." Her breath is ragged, she struggles to speak. She places her hand on Leah's cheek. "Do what you can to survive. Protect Mickey and Daniel."
“Mom! Please, you have to get up! I can’t do this alone!” Leah places her hand over her mother’s.
Hannah wipes the tears from her daughter’s face smearing some blood on her cheeks at the same time. “Go, Leah. I love you,” are her last words she says before life slips away and her hand slumps to the ground from Leah’s cheek.
“Leah! We have to go” Michael pulls at Leah’s sleeve.
She places Hannah’s hand on her mother’s chest before stumbling back to her feet and taking Michael and Danie by the hand, leading them away. Their breath is raspy as they run as fast as they can but Daniel’s asthma slows them down. “Mickey keep going! Head to the cliff and then make for the cave!”
“What are you doing?!” He demands, turning to look at his big sister. She shrugs the backpack off and helps Daniel shrug into the straps.
At some point she'll even witness horrible things happen to Adam and his family, that haunt her for a very long time. She'll wake up in the middle of the night with cold sweats after this.
But it's also the lost of her siblings that haunt her.
Micheal leads the way, having gained some distance while Leah picked up Daniel. Leah keeps an eye on him while she follows behind. When did Daniel get so big?! She swears just yesterday she hadn’t had this much trouble giving him a piggyback.
Her legs burn as she runs. She picks a point of focus, trying to ignore the pain as she keeps running, pushing herself to go to her limits. Her breath is ragged and her lungs burn as she tries to inhale oxygen.
She hears more gunfire from behind them and Micheal falls seconds later.
“Nooooo! Mickey!” Leah cries and runs to him.
She takes a knee beside him rolling him onto his back. Blood already stains the grass around him. His blue eyes stare up at her, lifeless, a hole in his forehead.
She muffles her cries by covering her mouth with both hands.
“Lee-Lee?”
Daniel’s worried cry snaps her back to reality. Getting to her feet she continues to run for the cliff.
These snippets are just very rough draft of what I'm working on for her Mindoir story. But this is part of the reason she's so grumpy. She pushes everyone away because she fears another situation like this. Getting too close to others means more ways of getting hurt. Have her enemy use people she loves against her in order to blackmail and get what they want. If she doesn't have anyone close then there's nothing her enemy can use against her. This way, she can make the hard calls, like sacrificing her whole team on Torfan to kill the batarians and save a colony. She had no feelings for her team so they couldn't be used against her.
Even her team on the Normandy, she refuses to let her self get close to them. And that's why she's mad about having feeling for Kaidan, she let her guard down. She's mad at herself for failing on keeping her word.
Not only is she mad at herself for falling in love with Kaidan, but she's terrified of what could be done to him, to lose him. Cerberus putting him in danger on Horizon is exactly what she feared and do on Horizon, in her universe, she's the one to push Kaidan away. She'll hurt him the only way she knows how and is to confirm her working with the enemy. By everyone thinking he hates her, she's able to keep him safe. Although it pains her, it's better than feeling like she died on Mindoir all over again. She would rather live knowing he hates her than live knowing that she was responsible for his death.
The Alliance trained her to be a weapon and that's what she sees herself as now. Lee-Lee died on Mindoir with her family, she's Commander Leah Shepard now. The girl she once knew is dead. A ghost that walks the field of the dead.

What inspired you to write Ori and Kolyat specifically? What drew you to them? Sorry if you’ve already answered this!
I couldn’t answer this last night, as to me this is a question that requires more thought than two large gin and tonics would allow, and I wanted to do it justice.
Before the art, which I think most people follow me for, there was (and still is) the writing. I wanted to write a Mass Effect crime story back in 2017, and thought a drell lead who could remember things perfectly would make a fantastic detective.
Eidetic memory could be a useful plot device, too; if I wrote it in first person, it would not only make the mystery element more compelling (you are there with Kolyat as he works things out) but would make those flashbacks less jarring.
Kolyat was also a character that intrigued me. I could’ve gone with a drell OC, but I wanted to know more about him. I thought his father’s story was done, tied up in a neat bow; Kolyat’s story was not, and I was left wondering- was he okay? Did he survive the Citadel explosion? What does he do with himself, does he become a priest, a detective, an advocate for his people? Does he stay under Bailey’s wing? Does he return to Kahje? Does he actually carve a life for himself out of his parent’s shadow?
It occurred to me that rather than badger other fanfic writers to answer the questions above (you can still see my “but what about-” comments to some of them, sorry guys) I could write my own.
Disconnect is my first Detective Krios mystery, and I did begin to answer some of my own questions. It’s a WIP I’ll return to one day, but Kolyat has remained unchanged as my writing has progressed. A good thing, since it’s his voice that steers the stories. He is still:
Grumpy, to the point of misanthropic behaviour.
Has dry, somewhat sarcastic observations
A secret softie, good with kids and animals
Obsessed with his work
A runner- likes to run to clear his head
Just a detective. Not a Shepard, not his father, not a Vakarian.
A stranger in a strange land- a minority in whatever space he’s in.
Complicated in his thoughts regarding his people, culture and religion; has an immigrant’s guilt, but pragmatic with it.
Has/had a conflicted relationship with his father. Kol knows as an adult that his dad was dysfunctional because of the Compact/his own shitty childhood -even has empathy for it- but he still can’t quite forgive Thane his choices in life.
You’ll notice it’s all Kolyat I’m talking about so far, and not Ori. Partly because the reader doesn’t know her inner thoughts- she might be in every story, but the reader only knows her through the eyes of Kolyat.
I go into great detail in this post here why she’s important to me, and how I write her. In all honesty, when I first started writing her in Disconnect, I liked the idea of her more than the character. She was a woman in his flashback memories to haunt him, a familiar Noir trope.
It’s also one she took great offence at, as weird as that is to say about a character I write. Ori’s personality has had the most change and nuance in my writing because of this, but from the start I knew:
She was no one’s doormat
Works in colony development, understands politics and red tape
She has a very rich life outside of Kolyat’s sphere/observation
She has a sense of humour- sass is the name of the game
Smart, capable- more so than Kolyat in some aspects
Old Hollywood femme-y glamour passed through a Mass Effect filter
Ori’s had so much more added to her since then. Disconnect is the story where she’s the least featured; Sirens & Selkies and Acts of Repetition she is very much there and holds her own, and is not just a flashback.
I know a lot of people in the fandom are either nonplussed about the pairing/story (it’s not Shepard, etc) or have problems with the Kol/Ori ship itself, but that’s rarepair hell for you.
I’ve also seen the “but why?” comments in the tags- pair the spares, ugh is one, but that’s part of the reason I like them; in the postwar context as I write the characters, it just makes sense.
Kol and Ori have a lot in common; the biggest is of course the Normandy connection, a frankly secret part of their life they can’t talk about with most people- not really. Ori even calls herself a Lee, not a Lawson. Why would she take Henry Lawson’s name, anyway? She had a family before him and Miranda.
Obviously “but my sister worked with your dad” is not enough for a relationship, but it’s definitely enough for an introduction. “We met at a party” is also a start, which is how they first met Postwar. I’ve found the ones who hate ‘Koliana’ the most have their own passionate/thought out version of Kolyat and Ori anyway; fair enough, so do I.
My OTP is (personally) delightful to me, because:
Their sass! Back and forth banter is a delight to write.
An interspecies relationship where the physical is not actually the difficult part- the cultural and emotional side is.
Not soulmates, but people who have to make an instant connection last a lifetime, and always work at it.
Seem polar opposites, a moon/sun dynamic
It just makes sense to me. These two are in the long haul, and I know what they do up until their mid 50s; I will finish Disconnect and Sirens after Repetitions is written, maybe I can explore that time of their life (and their kids!) after they’re done.
Writing takes me a long time though, oh boy. I’ll get there! I have no desire to quit; obviously this world I’ve made still means a lot to me.
