Obey Me Boys as Tarot/Oracle Decks I Own

Is this stupid? Yes. Am I doing it anyway? Absolutely.

To make a long story short, I have a problem and I compulsively buy tarot and oracle cards, so I have...quite a few. So, I was looking at them and thought, "which ones would fit the characters?" And now look where we are! :) I do have exactly fifteen decks and had planned originally to assign decks to the new side characters as well, but I, A. got tired and B. couldn't find one that fit Mephisto, so I just scrapped that idea altogether. Anyways, here's what literally nobody asked for!

Disclaimer! I did pick out cards that I thought matched the characters as well, based on both meaning and look. I'm not going into detail on all of the cards either...because I will ramble forever. I'm did my best to keep these as brief as possible!

Lucifer - Archangel Animal Oracle Deck

Okay, so this could've been a great deck for Simeon or Raphael, but out of what I had, this fit Lucifer the best! It ties back to his origins of being a seraphim. I did pick a card or two that have Archangel Micheal and Raphael in them, and they do fit Lucifer in needing to let others in and to not let pride get in the way of being dependent on others.

Mammon - The Illustrated Crystallary Oracle Deck

Mostly picked this one due to the fact that crystals can be expensive and high-dollar, which Mammon would be into and exploit (and he has). If not him, this one might've gone to Solomon, but I had a better one for him >:) I picked Mammon's cards based off his greed and his love for the MC...and which crystals would cost a pretty penny.

Leviathan - Mystical Manga Tarot Deck

My tried and true deck. It was either this one or my Skyrim tarot deck, so I went with this one. It felt more him to me. I picked the Seven of Cups, the Hanged Man, the Hermit, and the Nine of Swords for Levi. In some cases, the Seven of Cups gives me feelings of envy for choices that may seem out of reach or wanting it all when you have to pick and choose, so I went with it.

Satan - The Language of Flowers Oracle Deck

This is the best I had for Satan, but I feel like he'd be quite knowledgable on flower language. I had several other cards that I had in mind for him as well, namely Action - the Venus Fly Trap, but I wanted to keep the number of cards to four, so... Also, when I first started using this deck, it took a lot of warming up to, (it was shy...if you can believe that or not), which is how Satan is in both games, not shy just...needs to get used to people before opening up.

Asmodeus - Romantic Tarot Deck

This is the pairing that kicked off this idea. This deck is new, my mom gifted it to me for Easter! She's a sweetie. And I kept think about how Asmo would adore the art and vintage depictions in the cards. Since the cards aren't labeled, I picked the Lovers, the Two of Cups, the Empress, and the Three of Swords. Most of these are "romantic" in nature, or with the Empress, embodies confidence and embracing femininity. Three of Swords because of how dramatic and tragic love and can be, and I'm sure Asmo has had his fair share :(

Beelzebub - Moonology Manifestations Oracle Deck

This is my second Moonology deck, my other-half, if you will. (Another gift from my mom:)) I really don't have much to say about this deck for Beel, but I figured it would be fun to assign the twins with these decks. The cards were picked based on his feelings of guilt of his past from the Celestial War.

Belphegor - Moonology Oracle Deck

My first Moonology deck! I think this was the first oracle deck I ever got, so it has a special place in my heart. I obviously had to give this one to Belphie since his theme revolves around the moon and space. Notice in both Beel's and Belphie's I picked one Gemini card each, hehe...

Diavolo - Dragon Wisdom Oracle Deck

Considering Dia's demon form is draconic (dra-ICONIC! Heh, anyone?), this seemed right. I'm less familiar with this deck since it's not one of the primary ones I use, but it was fun to go through it again like it was new, lol. There was another card I almost picked for him, Initiation. But I thought these ones fit best.

Barbatos - Celtic Healing Oracle Deck

Once again, this is one of those scenarios where this was the best I had for Barb. There's a strange energy to these cards, mysterious and timeless almost, a little spooky. Kinda reminds me of him in some way. I'm the least familiar with this deck as it's relatively new and I haven't really used it yet, so apologies for lack of substance with this one.

Simeon - The Field Tarot

This was a gift from a friend of mine. It was theirs originally, but they so thoughtfully handed it down to me, and I use it quite a lot! This deck felt very mellow and light compared to my other ones. Very minimalist, so I thought it fit Simeon's vibe. To note: the Perspective card is this deck's Hanged Man. The Three of Cups reminded me of the og Purgatory Hall gang.

Solomon - Oceanic Tarot Deck

Based on his love for marine life and his...past with the ocean, how could I resist! Also, didn't mean for two of the cards I picked to be king and queen of the same suit, but I thought they fit his personality and way of living. The suit cards are pretty basic, featuring some marine life behind the pictures and whatnot without having too much imagery.

Luke - Tiny Tarot Deck

Come on...I had to. I put it in my hand so you could really get the perspective of how small it is. It's cute! I didn't pull any of the cards out since the box struggles to hold them in and I'm afraid of getting them everywhere, but they are your standard Rider-Waite-Smith deck! I probably would've picked the Sun or the Six of Cups for him, something along the lines of youth and vibrancy. (MY GOD, MY VEINS LOOK LIKE A STAR WTH?? I just noticed that, omg) Well...that's new...

i have decided on custom nicknames and icons for my s/i and like. most of the obey me characters (by which i mean like. the brothers and the primary dateables)

Here are my nicknames for them! (if you get the beel one youre my new best friend btw /silly)

Extra context, Octariians is my username on some video game things (though i have a few others i cycle through, i havent been consistent for yearsss) and i imagine simeon is like my grandma and just uses the last name to add a note about how he knows the person. He knows me because I'm friends with luke. and Barbatos names the people in his phone after their favourite kinds of tea if he likes them enough

Honestly I don't have anything off of the top of my head for group chat names. Though I can imagine me, beel and belphie being "the sleepy, the eepy and the hungry" or something dumb like that. theres an ongoing war over "the anti lucifer league" because when im in a good mood with him i keep changing it and satan and belphie get cross.

Though I'd imagine my gc with lucifer and diavolo is something really silly and cheesy but changes regularly based on the whims of dia and i (much to lucifers chagrin) . we love to come up with dumb nicknames too, especially ones related to notable groups of three. (i can totally see us being 'the starter trio' with dia as charmander, me as bulbasaur and luci as squirtle for like a really long time)

this is such a cool and fun ask, thank you so much!!!!. i absolutely live for the tiniest worldbuilding details you have no idea (glances nervously at the huge array of scattered headcanons i have about devils and angels and their mannerisms/differences) . Id love to hear some of yours if you're willing to share!! :D

How Obey Me Shot Itself In The Foot: Why Raphael is a Terminal Wet Blanket

MASSIVE WARNING FOR DISCUSSION OF RELIGION. Specifically of Abrahamic religions (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and their shared God. I am doing this in a media analysis context, not to shame any particular religion or anyone’s particular beliefs. If that makes you uncomfortable, feel free to not read this post, stop reading at any point, and/or unfollow/block me. DO NOT try to start religious discourse on this post or in my askbox/DMs, I will clown on and block you.

Also spoiler warnings for a ton of different Obey Me lessons.

Intro (X), Michael (X)(X)(X)(X), Conclusion (you're here)(X)

This is the conclusion of my setup to why Raphael should kill MC. Are you still reading this? If so, very cool of you. I should probably get tested for ADHD, but that's never gonna happen.

I think there are any number of combinations or mixes of these versions of Michael that could be interesting to explore in Obey Me. Unfortunately, I doubt we’re gonna get an especially rich and complex version of Michael in canon Obey Me.

Why?

Because Obey Me is an otome game first and foremost, and that means they won’t make any of their prospective love interests Too Spicy in a way that isn’t especially marketable. There used to be a bit more edge to the game (that’s where we get iconic shit like Asmo threatening to tear out our heart to see what’s inside, the brothers casually mentioning torturing and eating people, etc.) but with later lessons and the anime it’s much tamer I find. That’s not bad per se, but y’know. I kinda miss the reminders that we couldn’t be left alone at RAD lest we get eaten by a lesser demon, or the stark duality between Diavolo’s generally fun loving and easygoing attitude and the way he ruthlessly ordered Belphegor to be imprisoned and possibly executed for treason.

But Winter, you say, what about Lucifer and Belphegor?

Lucifer’s marketed as a hot daddy dom and, for season one, as a slow burn enemies-to-lovers antagonist. And Belphegor is (allegedly) a yandere, so his manipulation and killing of MC can be seen as fitting into that niche.

Threats and murder can be fun romantic foreplay as long as it all ends well.

The biggest problem with a darker interpretation of Michael is that a lot of his nastier elements involve possible grooming/indoctrination of Luke, which is, crudely put, not a sexy kind of dark topic. Lots of people like Luke, so making a prospective love interest (depending on how Michael is received by fans) a child abuser is… a lot.

And so, to Finally get back to Raphael! If Raphael is the Celestial Realm’s hitman, he has to be sent to the Devildom to go after a specific mark. It makes most sense for that mark to be either Simeon or MC. But if Simeon’s punishment is the revoking of his angelic blessing, there’s not really a point in sending an angelic hitman after him: he’s human now, he’s gonna die eventually anyway.

So that leaves MC, who is (mostly?) human, but has a shitton of magical power and no significant ties to the Celestial Realm, and is thus not under their control (unlike Solomon, whose ring of wisdom comes from Michael).

But who is sending Raphael after MC?

It can’t be Michael, who seems eager to meet MC (and again, while Belphegor did murder us, I don’t think the devs are going to use the murder-to-lovers card twice). (Unless Michael’s plan is to meet MC by sending their ass to kingdom come, which is honestly pretty funny to think about.)

And it can’t be God/Father, because portraying him as a major villain is a Big No-No for a silly otome game.

I guess Raphael could also be gunning for Diavolo, but when Dia can stop time at will, automatically know when people are lying to him, and has a time-travelling butler at his beck and call, it seems highly unlikely that that would work out in Raph’s favour.

So to sum up:

Obey Me’s subject matter deals with representations of Heaven and Hell, as well as God

It’s very, very controversial to play with depictions of Heaven and especially God, and because at the end of the day Obey Me is an otome game/dating sim, I don’t think they’re willing to go full out with any critical representations of the Celestial Realm or its inhabitants because that would get way too heavy for the game’s genre

The game has also lost a lot of its edgier/darker elements as time has gone on, and that plus the addition of new potential LIs suggests to me that the devs are thinking about marketability first and foremost, and so don’t want to make the new characters too unlikeable

The devs have written themselves into a corner here by the nature of what they’re making.

At least, I think they have. But then again, I’m stuck at lesson 41/8, and Obey Me’s far from over it seems. Who knows what the future will bring.

(But also I think the devs have spread themselves super thin with the introduction of all these characters and are having a hard time juggling them all, so we get weird inconsistencies and unexplored elements — but hey, that’s what fandom is for!)

-Serial killer SULKING like they got sent to the naughty step I CAN'T--

-And, oh, he's very camp when he's around Diavolo

-Lucifer telling the others that they're sleeping 'wrong' despite this man having no experience in said subject

-Asmo's adorable laugh, and the bros being silly and mucking around

-Beel's face when Lucifer deepthroats his barbecue meat (yes I said it that way yes I'd like to think I'm funny)

-Mammon hiding deep in the forest to avoid his debt collectors

-Lucifer clearly having gone insane after 6,000 years spent inside that dusty ass house

-The fact that this serial killer is shit at picking his victims

-The idea that maybe Lucifer will take Levi, Satan and Belphie on a trip next time, seeing as they didn't get to go on this one. Where will they go? What will they do? I don't know, but what I do know is that that man's gonna come back with hair whiter than Diavolo's "lighting difference" issues

-(Unpopular opinion, but seriously though, Dia looks so much nicer with tan or darker skin, why didn't they just go with it-- 😭)

1. What was the original concept for your Mc? I.e has their appearance changed much from the first picture, picrew or description you made for them?

so !!! yeah originally my mc was a very boring version of me. she was thin with big boobs vbevause i felt the brothers wouldnt like me for truly being me. thats why im so anti boring brunette mc because i feel like thats pushing the narrative of you have to change yourself for ppl to like you lol, i actually made her a sprite in obey me ish style at the time. while i think it looks better in terms of quality than her new sprite, the style is not very compatiable with the obey me style, ie shes not facing the front, and her face is... :|

also her appearance has changed by season!! i need to design a new outfit for s4, but im keeping her hair because its become pretty iconic 😳. im even thinking of getting it done irl

17. Who do they trust?

mammon, definately. simeons high up there. lucifer too, but not in the i would tell you anything / i can be completely comfortable way. moreso in a i trust you wont kill me way, samw with dia bc the royalty status. there is no way in hell i am pissing with the door open in front oflucifer. i would die on the spot. levi has been given the honor of kink holder because he is also in weird ass shit. belphies definately lower on the list.

other than that no one 😳 and even then none of them know all her secrets. and its goingnto be a hot day in hell before we vent to ANY of them. except maybe simeon.

19. What does their ideal life look like?

living in the human world with the brothers, and dia and simeon. as cool as the devildom is if it was dark all the time i would be Fuckin Bummed. but it would be nice to go there anytime she wants!
