merlin but someone tries to accuse merlin of magic and obvi arthur is like “no merlin doesn’t have magic” because he may be sweet (ish) but he’s also very very very stupid but the person tries to prove it by constantly taunting merlin so that merlin will get angry enough and lash out using his magic and boom death sentence for merlin
merlin reaches his breaking point and yells something like “I WOULDNT NEED MAGIC TO BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU” and just like lunges forward but either a frantic arthur catches him and drags him away or an exasperated leon just sighs and picks him up and puts him on time out

Remember when I got into that string of fights a while back because people were exposing their lack of ethics with incredible takes like:
Uther’s persecution of magic was totally justified because magic is dangerous! It corrupts people!
Merlin had no reason to be afraid of Arthur, he was just being irrational! It’s not like thousands of lives were at stake here! He owed Arthur his private information about how Arthur has unwittingly traumatized him!
Simultaneously, there’s no way Arthur could have known that magic isn’t inherently evil because he’d ~never~ seen magic used for good (despite events going as far back as 1x04 or even 1x03)
Merlin withholding personal information from the people who were a constant threat to his life for being “born wrong” was morally repugnant! He should’ve exposed himself with the information his oppressors would kill him for, to give them a chance to change their minds! There’s totally no other way they could form different opinions!
Arthur deserved to know about Merlin’s magic, despite his condemnation of all things magic which threatened Merlin’s safety, because Arthur was kind or merciful in so many things except, noticeably, magic! Merlin should’ve trusted him!
Uther and Arthur are the REAL victims of the people who they oppress, so they have no choice but to slaughter thousands, children included!
Those were certainly times.
I remember saying at one point that if I knew someone was homophobic, I simply wouldn’t come out to them as gay, because they haven’t earned my trust in that regard. Anything they’ve done for me, they did while believing me to be straight. They likely wouldn’t treat me the same if they knew. Likewise, if a gay person had abused them at one point, it still wouldn’t give them the right to stereotype all gay people as abusive, or to support anti-gay campaigns. Homophobia has no justification. It’s just bigotry.
I said this multiple times, but every response was: “Well that’s different! Magic is actually dangerous!”
Here is what I said (paraphrased):
“If the potential dangers of magic were really the problem—and not just Uther’s excuse to justify banning it—then Uther could always just ban certain spells instead of committing genocide. Same with Arthur, really. But these characters wrongly believe that magic is inherently corrupt, because that worldview is easier to swallow than the hard truth.
“Criminalizing magic is like blaming massacres on all tools when they’re only performed with particular weapons: should whisks be considered a danger because some people murder with military grade assault rifles? Clearly, banning whisks doesn’t solve the problem. Likewise, when a sorcerer gets executed for using magic in the kitchen, Uther has effectively equated this harmless act to malicious crimes like murder. Was there ever a problem with magic itself, or does Uther perhaps have ulterior motives for banning it?
“If murder is already illegal, then banning murder by means of magic is unnecessary—all forms of murder, magical or not, are illegal by default. Making magic illegal does not prevent crimes that are already illegal; it only criminalizes innocent magic use, which means that people are prosecuted and found guilty for anything from using magic for chores to simply being loosely associated with a magical person.
“Uther’s laws helped no one but himself, because they weren’t designed to serve any other purpose. Nothing was accomplished, except that dehumanizing crimes such as trafficking and murder became legal as long as the victim had magic.”
To this, I was told that I “wasn’t understanding.”
What wasn’t I understanding? That people genuinely believe the ban on magic was okay? That they don’t have the slightest inkling of how oppression works, or how their justifications for hypothetical scenarios show their gullibility to real world bigotry? Why even bother defending a fictional character’s fictional genocide?
The ban on magic is ultimately a metaphor for the persecution of a marginalized religion (it’s literally called “The Old Religion”). To support Uther’s (and Arthur’s) claims that magic is inherently dangerous—despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary—is worrying at the least, considering the real life ramifications of fiction.
If you’re forsaking your morals to defend the inexcusable actions of a fictional character or two, then you value your entertainment more than real human lives. Likewise, you shouldn’t excuse any form of bigotry just because you like the person who is perpetuating it. If you can’t even stand by your supposed morals when it comes to fictional characters, there is no chance you will stand by them with real people. Most Arthur stans like him because they believe in his capacity for change, but this acknowledges that he is wrong and needs to change. The less like Uther he is, the better! My Gwaine-stanning is also reliant on him changing his views and accepting responsibility for them. We don’t get to make excuses for their unfair biases!
Merlin and other magical peoples are the victims of their oppressors, not the other way around. It really is that simple, and it pains me to see the hoops people will jump through to dismiss this.

Sooooo... I've had a thought for a while. How awesome would it have been if they had let Colin Morgan keep actual his Irish accent to remind ppl that he wasn't originally from Camelot? Like, maybe it becomes subtler as the seasons go on but it's always there and when he gets tired or angry the lilt would come out FULL FORCE and ppl that didn't know or forget would be like, yo wtf???
(Headcanon Masterlist) (Full Masterlist)
Ok so I rarely answer asks as soon as I see them but
Anon
I DEDICATE AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR OF EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY THINKING ABOUT MERLIN WITH AN ACCENT!!!!
Like.... I'm turning this into a headcanon set because I need to think about this right now (if someone else wants to expand it that's fine, or if it's popular enough, I'll add it to the next List update).
ANYWAY!!!
Say he's not actually from Essetir, but Ireland (from research I think it was called Hibernia during the medieval ages, or maybe Alba? I'm not sure, so I'll just stick with Ireland), and Balinor ran a little further afield before meeting Hunith, and then returning once things had settled down to live in that skanky cave, so he can keep an eye on how Camelot was doing. Hunith and Merlin travel to Essetir when Merlin is maybe twelve or so?? So the accent and customs (and even the language) is like... heavily embedded. (To cover plot holes... uh... Gaius is also Irish, but travelled over with... relatives(?) when he was so young that he doesn't have an accent, or even really any memories of home. He has however visited and been visited by his sister enough to have a good relationship with her, and they exchanged letters regularly before and after she moved to Essetir. There. Don't think about it too much.)
HOWEVER!! When he moves to Camelot, he covers it up, because Camelot already hates Bastards (check), Sorcerers (double check) and also Gaels (check again). So to make his life easier, he gives himself a generic Essetirian/Camelot accent, and no one really notices, Maybe he has a bit of a lilt here and there, but people chalk it up to him spending lots of time with a diverse set of people, and/or maybe just being a country bumpkin. The lilt definitely comes out more when he's angry, the angrier he is the stronger it is, but, what the majority of Merlin's friends don’t know, is that they've never really seen him truly angry. Annoyed, frustrated maybe, a little pissed off, but not properly angry. Not for the first few years at least, so again, no one really notices.
Sometimes he rants to himself under his breath in Gaels, more so when he's with Gaius because it's not like the guy doesn't already know, even if he can't actually understand (Gaius does mourn the loss of his heritage sometimes, especially because, when delirious, Merlin's accent comes back full force, and Gaius can't understand a word he's saying).
Anyway. I do have this scenario in my head of some poor page running into the Throne room all "Oh CHRIST, My Lord, there's a woman in the courtyard who claims to have killed Morgause and rescued Morgana!! BUT!!! She says she'll only speak to Myrddin??" And the whole room is in uproar and Merlin just rolls his eyes at them and goes "What does she look like?", at the description he just goes "Oh shit" except in Gaels and runs out. All the gang follow to see him embracing this woman and speaking fast Gaels to her. She's introduced as his sister or an old childhood neighbour/friend or something. She couldn't give less of a shit about Camelot's anti magic laws if she TRIED, and fully admits to defeating the two witches with magic, because she herself is also a witch, and basically dares Arthur to do something abut it whilst Merlin despairs. Once the shock passes, someone, probably Gwaine, just goes "Hey, Merls, what's with the accent?? And the name??" and the woman just raises her eyebrow and goes "Aye, Merls, what's with the accent and the name?" And he has to admit that he's Irish and his real name is Myrddin (I know it's actually Welsh but let’s pretend just for now) and talks in his normal accent and everyone just... blue screens.
At least three times a day for the next few weeks, if not months, he has to explain the "new" accent to friends whom he hasn't spoken to since before the incident. Overall it's very funny, and everyone in Camelot suddenly finds Merlin ten times hotter. Arthur is struggling to cope. Leon openly drools. Gwaine is so wowed he can't even flirt right. Gwen trips over every time he speaks.
His accent is naturally really toned down, from years of hiding it and just being around people who don't have that accent, but it still gets strong when he shouts, and is nigh impossible to understand when he's concussed/drugged/suffering from blood loss/exhausted to the point of delirium. He also starts using words like "aye" to mean yes, and "slán" (the original of Sláinte, meaning good health, or cheers), when he says goodbye, and it's very endearing but also very confusing.
Our man is just so much happier being able to be himself and share his culture with no backlash, because Uther's been gone a while, and Arthur made peace with the Gaels ages ago (Merlin was basically just in too deep to back out then and kept clutching straws until the sister/friend arrived and blew it all wide open). Now he just has to do the same with the magic thing.... But then again!! Sister/friend not giving a fuck has maybe done that already. So. Maybe he's already set?
Anyway. Merlin with an Irish accent. Yes Please Please Please :D

It looks like ppl need the reminder, and I will gladly provide.
Tom has some traits which are considered feminine. Jewelry, a teenage diary, renouncing of his father's surname, and so go on.
But you know who is the single most feminine male character in all HP? That's right, 💐🎆 Albus Dumbledore ✨🧙‍♂️
The fact that such a feminine character was a good character, ever more, was a mentor, was pretty novel.
Him and his super colourful robes, him and his love for purple, him and his long beard (and hair), him and his disgust of manly activities such as war and fighting.
Not just this, he's also a canonically gay character. His tragic moving deep love story with Gellert still haunts me 💐🐝
I really love my gay feminine old man, thank you.
(please for the love of Merlin remember he's an unconventional feminine gay man when you write him!!!!)

I read a jk rowling vs terry pratchett comparison post and it struck me how jkr's writings also reminds me of how merlin bbc was written
1. Heavy emphasis on who's the absolute good and absolute evil
2. Looking down on ppl who look/act different and making fun of them (example: the changeling/elena) since they don't fit the norm
3. Just a general maliciousness against things that are different or are conventionally ugly (coz usually they are evil)
And yet most of the deformity were caused by immense pain/trauma and powerlessness? And there was no healing whatsoever? Instead hatred is blamed as an incurable disease that spreads (like cancer) and that their own pain was their fault coz they are bad.
I would think (at first) that merlin bbc was a product of its time... but that's too easy.
Another thought is that it just patterned itself after arthuriana, which usually promote unfair beauty and "goodness" standards.

for the ask game: 3, 26, 30
thanks for the ask!!
3. three songs you were recently obsessed with
this one is amazing and i have been playing it on repeat for like a month without getting sick of it!
theres also this one
i've been realizing lately that i tend to rly like dominic fike's songs
and lastly this one
it's really beautiful and so enthralling that i never even realize how LONG it is. also i watched little miss sunshine recently (this song is in it) and was reminded of how GREAT a movie that is <3 just good vibes all around
26. three favourite non-English songs
i have serbian citizenship so i have to represent here! (although we'll just say ex-yugo for the sake of simplicity and accuracy... i prefer to identify that way anyway despite the confusion that sometimes brings.)
this one is a classic! it's so fun to listen to and even more fun to sing along to
AND YET ANOTHER CLASSIC
i have loved this song for a rly long time. the title translates to "my life is switzerland", which is a metaphor, and not literal. my aunt asked me why i like this song so much because it didn't make sense to her that i would like a song i couldnt personally relate to. she, for one, "related" to this song bc shes a serb who moved to germany (close to switzerland...?) and considered it "her song". i didnt rly know how to explain to her that 1. she misunderstood the song entirely and 2. almost none of the songs i love apply to me personally
and for female touch there's this:
which is a cute and upbeat song <3 i tend to prefer this era of yugo music... new songs are hit or miss for me. i wanna listen to more music from serbia (and all ex-yu) but its kinda hard to get into it when i live in the us and am constantly surrounded by songs in english
30. three songs you really want your followers to know (for reasons other than all those above)
simple enough, there's this
i (thankfully) dont relate to this song and it's not aspirational or anything so it wouldn't fit in any category or be used by me in a ship playlist. i just LOVE it so much! one of my favorite songs by her <3
also this one
i really like this... i dont have a comment and thus it doesnt fit in a category.
moving on...
ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. it's originally a balkan romani song that's gained popularity throughout the former yugo-countries. it has a sad story of being sung out of defiance by prisoners on the train from sarajevo to the jasenovac concentration camp, where the ustase murdered many serbs, jews, and roma (the exact number of ppl killed under the ustasa is not known after a long period of it being significantly downplayed and is subject to debate). that particular incident gives the song an extra sad flavor, but it's still a really beautiful song i love listening to. (i also apologize to anybody who knows more than me about the history of the song. i'm sure my description is minimal and could be expanded on)
thank u for asking, again! this was really fun <3
feel free to ask any more. i spend 20 hours a day listening to music so...

Fic: (We Can Burn) Brighter Than the Sun ~ Merlin ~ Merthur
It occurs to me that, because I was legitimately unable to set up tumblr posts for last week, and spent the time this past weekend I could have used for setting some up this week or making some for last week, taking a fucking break, I’ve posted a few chapters since the last time I made a post here.
There are, what, five ppl who actually reblog chapter posts? I love all five of you, you’re my favourite people. But it hasn’t felt worth it to stress myself out trying to slam together tumblr posts, esp since I only have approximately 4hrs of unobserved computer time a day, on weekdays, and posting the tumblr post cuts into the 45mins I get every morning.
I’m not going to move updates to the weekends (tho I did think about that, for my own sanity, and I may do that for future fics/Patreon updates), but I’m also not going to go out of my way to make tumblr posts for every chapter.
So
Chapters 12-14 are up, as well as the second side-story, from Arthur’s pov. (We’re in Camelot, Arthur and Merlin have met properly again, I know that’s what some folks were really looking forward to. So.) AO3 series link is this text here. Please follow that series through AO3′s system if you want updates about new chapters. (I don’t know the status of AO3′s waitlist, if there is one right now. I have a number of invites, just let me know if you want one. & then please give me a day to respond.)
If nothing else, I promise I’ll make a post for when the final chapter goes up. The limited interaction just doesn’t balance out the amount of time and energy I have to put into making posts for tumblr.
Which, yes, is a reminder that, if you want nice things, like tumblr update posts, YOU HAVE TO INTERACT WITH THEM.

1/2 I saw that you are also a fan of Merlin and I wanted to say that Ricky and EJ remind me a little of Merlin and Arthur? Like they didn't get along at first but then became friends. One comes from a wealthy family and the other from a poor one (in Ricky's case, he's obv not poor, but he had to move bc of money pb so he knows what it's like not to have enough). EJ and Arthur, at first, were shown to be arrogant, but they are actually really good ppl (+ the character development).
2/2 Both Ricky and Merlin see the good in ppl. If you see more similarities, pls, feel free to add more :)
You're making some good points! Now all we need is for EJ and Ricky's friendship to become as strong as Arthur and Merlin's 🥰 I would love it if they became as close as brothers by the end of the show!

Ohmygod YES Susan Pevensie is awesome please talk to me about Susan i want to know everything you have to say
Literally THANK YOU for asking me this bc Susan Pevensie is a character I never get asked about and I have So Many Opinions.
I'm going to start by saying that Susan used to be my least favorite character in the series. This goes for the books and the movies. Some of it was for personal reasons--she reminds me of a couple of annoying ppl I know irl--but it was also bc I watched Prince Caspian which shoehorned her into a relationship with Caspian which I hated.
HOWEVER. I ended up rethinking this position after interacting with Susan fans and realizing that there are so many wonderful things to love about her!
(putting under the cut bc this got long)
Things Ash Loves About Susan Pevensie
Aight I'm not going to do a formal analysis yet on her, but instead rant about some of the unrelated things I adore about Susan Pevensie.
Susan the Archer
Tumblr media
Look we all love archery here. I don't have anything more to say.
Okay, I actually do have more to say. I love the fact that Susan is a complete badass with the bow. You get the general impression that she's one of the royals in charge of public relations, traditions, foreign policy, etc. and yet she's the most competent archer in the series. One of the few things I liked about the movies is how they didn't downplay this. They actually let her be a badass and show off her skills.
Also the part where she kicks Trumpkin's ass was awesome.
Susan the Gentle
Tumblr media
Susan being the most passive Pevensie was something I definitely underappreciated as a teenager. I think my non-ability to see past "I'm not like other girls" narrative and the combination of Susan being described as the most traditionally feminine woman in the Narnia series is what initially turned me off from her.
HOWEVER, now it's one of my favorite attributes! I love that Susan is a badass and the most beautiful woman in Narnia. She has hair down to her feet, every man and woman in the kingdom want to fuck her, and she's still a fucking badass who will not hesitate to kick your ass.
Susan the Sister
Tumblr media
Most of my thoughts of Susan as an older sister mostly stem from my own personal headcanons, but she is an awesome sister to her siblings. She's Peter's voice of reason, Edmund's sass partner, and Lucy's big sister.
Susan the Mom-Friend
She is a literal mother-figure for Corin.
"[...] the most beautiful lady he had ever seen rose from her place and threw her arms round him and kissed him, saying: "Oh Corin, Corin, how could you? And thou and I such close friends ever since thy mother died. [...]"
-The Horse and His Boy, 33-34
Most everything I have to say about this ventures into headcanon territory, but I love the idea of Susan basically adopting Corin after his mom dies. The way she trusts Cor--who she thinks is Corin in this chapter--is really sweet and I wish we could've seen more of that relationship.
Susan the Flawed
Tumblr media
Something I notice from the fandom is a lot of people who hate Susan tend to because of her flaws. On the other hand, most Susan stans like to wave away these flaws and blame C.S. Lewis for being misogynistic or Aslan for being a "cruel god" and ignore the fact that she is a deeply flawed person.
Susan gets something of a "reverse redemption arc" in The Chronicles of Narnia. This makes her not only a fascinating foil to Edmund--as both are analytical, logical people--but an interesting character by herself.
She starts out in TWW as very skeptical of Narnia and it's whole deal and also very condescending to Lucy throughout. She ultimately does admit that Lucy was right and does get on board with the whole prophecy at the same time Peter does, and ends the book being crowned "the Gentle Queen."
In The Horse and His Boy, she has a very interesting dynamic with Edmund and in even more interesting relationship with Rabadash. They don't even interact on-page with each other, but it's highly implied that she was interested in him when he was a guest in Narnia. His behavior obviously changed when she visited him in Tashbaan, but you have to wonder what their dynamic was like before for her to travel all the way to his home when relations between the countries were strained at best.
Prince Caspian is where the cracks start showing through. Susan has lived an entire life as an adult in Narnia, gets thrown back to England with her siblings, and is yet again in Narnia as a child. This book is what really emphasizes her one fatal flaw: convenience.
(Put a pin in that thought, I'll get back to it.)
Susan denies once again that Lucy saw something that the rest of them can't seen. She continues this narrative until every other sibling finally acknowledges Lucy in the right and only then does she apologize.
The last mention of Susan is in The Last Battle, where all of her flaws rise up against her in the worst way possible. I have a lot of controversial opinions on this that I'm going to address later, but I just want to say that Susan's reverse-redemption arc is something I actually like about her.
(There is also evidence that Susan does get a full redemption arc, just as Edmund and Eustace did, but C.S. Lewis was pretty much done with The Chronicles of Narnia at the point and instead encouraged fans to write their own version of how that went down.)
Okay, back to convenience being Susan's fatal flaw. So the one thing that comes up time and time again in the series is that Susan is very focused on material comforts. I believe it's implied that she's vain, and it's canonical that her own personal comfort spurs her to make decisions.
"[...] I really believed it was him — he, I mean — yesterday. When he warned us not to go down to the fir wood. And I really believed it was him tonight, when you woke us up. I mean, deep down inside. Or I could have, if I'd let myself. But I just wanted to get out of the woods and — and — oh, I don't know [...]"
Prince Caspian, 81
Prince Caspian has the strongest examples of Susan doing this, but certainly there's evidence elsewhere. There are a lot of fans who are distressed by this, claiming that Aslan and the others are too hard on her and shouldn't judge.
Honestly, I like that she's written with this flaw. Not only is it very relatable--(my own personal comfort and convenience is something I highly prioritize too)--but it humanizes a character who otherwise is ridiculously op and basically the Helen of Troy of the series. It may sound like I'm using this as an excuse to rant, but I really wouldn't have her any other way.
Susan As Portrayed by Anna Popplewell
Movie!Susan is a fucking delight.
She's sarcastic and badass and awesome and I could spend hours heaping praise on Anna's acting and her portrayal of Susan, but I can already tell that this post is going to be long so, I'll just stop here.
Tumblr media
(10/10 want to be stabbed by her tho.)
Personal Headcanons
Let's talk about my fanon thoughts. I have many.
Susan is Aro
There's canonical evidence for this! Susan is a character who is heavily pursued by suitors everywhere, and even lets herself be courted by many of them, but chooses not to settle down. Even when she gets back to England and is described as only having interest in parties and material things, boys aren't mentioned.
I like to think that in The Horse in His Boy Susan was interested in Rabadash at first because he was a brilliant conversationalist. Nothing she says about him implies romantic interest, before and after she realizes the truth of his intentions.
Susan and Edmund Were Best Friends
This might be my love for The Horse and His Boy showing itself, but I think Susan and Edmund were thrown into circumstances where they interacted the most with each other.
Edmund is the ruler in charge of politics. Susan is the ruler in charge of Cair Paravel's public image. I imagine they spent time as ambassadors to other countries and planning royal functions.
They're also the most level-headed and logical out of their siblings, so they probably found a lot in common.
Susan Fancast
I literally just said I loved Anna's potrayal of Susan's (and I love what they gave us of older Susan too in LWW!), but I read the books in 2008 and my parents didn't let me see the movies bc I was like...nine years old and they thought it would be too scary.
So I had to headcanon my own interpretations.
Queen Susan the Gentle:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For some reason Merlin wasn't too scary for me to watch and I fell in love with Katie McGrath in like. Two episodes so. (On an unrelated note, I also fancast Bradley James as Peter at the time.)
Anyway, fanon Susan is basically Morgana Pendragon pre-evil arc. Sassy as hell, hot as fuck, and can kick your ass.
Unpopular Opinions
Yeah, feel free to skip this part if having controversial fandom opinions is a deal breaker for you.
The Problem With Susan Isn't Actually A Problem
I'm about to start so much discourse in the Narnia fandom, but C.S. Lewis's choices with her in The Last Battle weren't misogynistic. Bear in mind, I'm not saying that all of his writing choices in the series were A++ or excusing away certain racist/sexiest bits, but it's honestly baffling to me that people are so up in arms over Susan's exclusion in the final book.
So the part that everyone loses their shit over is as follows:
"My sister Susan," answered Peter shortly and gravely, "is no longer a friend of Narnia."
"Yes," said Eustace, "and whenever you've tried to get her to come and talk about Narnia or do anything about Narnia, she says 'What wonderful memories you have! Fancy your still thinking about all those funny games we used to play when we were children.'"
"Oh Susan!" said Jill, "she's interested in nothing now-a-days except nylons and lipstick and invitations. She always was a jolly sight too keen on being grown-up."
"Grown-up, indeed," said the Lady Polly. "I wish she would grow up. She wasted all her school time wanting to be the age she is now, and she'll waste all the rest of her life trying to stay that age. Her whole idea is to race on to the silliest time of one's life as quick as she can and then stop there as long as she can."
The Last Battle, 83-84
There's a lot to unpack here and I first want to say that everyone's opinion on this part, no matter how different than mine, is valid. I'm going to be quoting some other ppl's opinions on here and by no means am I bashing them. I just want to address my feelings on the matter and the best way to do that is to cite the thoughts of ppl who have opposing ideas.
Here are some arguments on Tumblr I've heard regarding "The Problem of Susan":
"How about we talk about what might have happened if Narnia hadn't deserted Susan? [...] What if we didn't tell Susan she had to go grow up in her own world and then shame and punish her for doing just that? She was told to walk away and she went. She did not try to stay a child all her life, wishing for something she had been told she couldn't have again."
"Narnia is filled with metaphors (often not very subtle ones) that are supposed to teach us how to be, and the most glaring one for any young girl to absorb is that it's okay to be a girl like Lucy, unthreatening and cheerful and valiant and faithful, but to be a girl like Susan gets you punished - in fact, you aren't just punished, you're destroyed."
"why do we call it ‘the problem’ where’s the problem about a young woman dealing with her trauma and choosing her own path, actively making the choice to keep living and to stay and to carve a life out in England when her siblings couldn’t? what is the problem about susan forgetting to somehow cope with what she’s experienced? why is it ‘the problem of susan’ that she recontextualised her faith?"
And then there's JK Rowling who said this:
There comes a point where Susan, who was the older girl, is lost to Narnia because she becomes interested in lipstick. She's become irreligious basically because she found sex. I have a big problem with that.
It's weird how I'm still finding new ways to hate JKR in the year 2021. Again, there is absolutely zero implication that Susan had sex when she came back to England. ZERO. Did she actually read the books? IDK. If someone shares this opinion pls reply with actual canonical evidence.
Back on topic, I'm a firm believer of death of the author and interpreting art via your own experiences. Which is why I'm also going to share my own interpretation by saying y'all are wrong.
Susan Pevensie was not abandoned by Narnia. She was not barred from Narnia because she is traditionally feminine or because she "owned her sexuality" (another opinion I didn't have time to condense down for this post) or because she recontextualized her faith or even because she deserved to be punished.
I also fail to see how Susan recontexualized her faith, as the entire point of it all is that she has none. Bringing this back to Susan's fatal flaw (personal convenience/material comforts), her prioritizing herself over her own faith is the reason she is "no longer a friend of Narnia." Not...whatever fanon y'all are imposing on her character.
Susan is not being punished for liking lipstick and looking pretty. Susan's not even being punished. Y'all read Neil Gaiman's The Problem of Susan and forgot it wasn't canon.
There are many reasons Susan is not in Aslan's Country (one of them being that she's not actually dead yet), but the main one has to do with this:
"[...] But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”
Voyage of the Dawn Treader, 215-216
Yeah, okay that's why Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia. The implication when the Pevensies are told that they can no longer enter Narnia is that they are to find Aslan in other places. Susan doesn't do this, instead choosing to focus her life on material things. It isn't the lipstick, it's that she only wants the lipstick.
Susan Had Sex In The Books
Oh and not in the context y'all are thinking. (Again, there are no implications that Susan was barred from Narnia for having sex or that she had sex when she came back to England.)
So there's actual canonical evidence that Susan and Rabadash had a sexual relationship. Sort of.
"What think you? We have been in this city fully three weeks. Have you yet settled in your mind whether you will marry this dark-faced lover of yours, this Prince Rabadash, or no?"
-The Horse and His Boy, 35
Edmund calls Rabadash her lover. Not her suitor. I don't know if the word had a different meaning in 1954, but it feels like C.S. Lewis is saying that they're fucking. I'm not really happy with the idea of Susan sleeping with an abuser, but really proud of her for Getting Some as a woman born in a time period where having premarital sex was a big no-no.
This also invalidates the weird opinion going on that Susan was barred from Narnia because she had sex.
Suspian Is The Worst
Tumblr media
I haven't really talked about Movie!Susan much, but as long as we're talking unpopular opinions, it's worth noting that I hate Suspian. Some of it is the "Susan is Aro" headcanon screaming inside of me, but it's also the fact that it's written poorly, does nothing interesting for either character and generally comes across as awkward.
I feel like they were trying to make Prince Caspian sexy and relevant to teens. It came across as super heteronormative and unnecessary.
It also gets really really weird bc the next movie then gives Caspian and Edmund mad chemistry and we're all just like........ok.
Final Thoughts
Tumblr media
Susan may not be my favorite character in the series, but she's grown on me over the years. I have many issues with fanon interpretations of her--which definately fueled some of my disdain for her initally--and I don't identify as a Susan Apologist.
I do however adore Susan and have many headcanons for her not mentioned here. I love reading fanfic, writing fanfic and meta, and generally having conversations about her and would love to talk more about it.
I welcome criticism (CONSTRUCTIVE) and conversation on all of my opinions and observations. Please drop into my inbox. <3

OK assorted black sails thoughts bc i didnt wanna make a billion individual posts
- first of all i find starz funny bc for real i swear ive never freaking heard of it before, except for torchwood: miracle day which.... literally i never finished but thats a whole ramble for another time (bc despite torchwood being VERY bumpy, i found a lot of value in it, but miracle day was just. give us nothing! to me...help)
- the women on the show are kind of a shame i mean. im not fuming its more of a (dejected sighhhh) lies back do you know what i mean bc its hardly worse than anything else but help... theyre all gorgeous models thus far do you know what i mean. i dont know. i think its just odd sometimes to look at it when the men are all fucking foul looking, mucky type of guys (<3!) and then the girlies are just like hiii<3 like okay LOL. max is rlly pretty tho (as is the lass in the hat- whose name i didnt atch..) so i shant be mad but its also likehelp... even just an OLDER? woman. not even one? sniffy sniffy? okayyy i'll settle
- the gentleman do have some wonderful haircuts i will say. rackham's stoner transmasc that hangs about in unique trousers round the back of spoons.... i mentioned it already but help. your rat tail... and flints pathetic and limp little ponytail. shrimptastic it is.... and johnny silver. (twirls his hair for him)
- INTRO ALSO FUCKS LIKE MAD BTW.
- i love a woman with daddy issues. i cant relate to any of them. not to eleanor, or to shiv or helena or any of the fine women with father problems despite having many of my own. but its very fun to watch them. like girlies (twirls my hair) just give him a slap.... who cares<3
- btw im screaming... john is sooo funny. what a silly little guy. i think hes going to get himself killed he is like a looney tunes character who should have been dead 5 scenes ago but he keeps defying all sense and falling pianos. the very definition of a rapscallion. he is a problem to us all
- whent hey just state their names and theit ships at each other. okay so cute girlies i bet you'd write that in your tinder bios huh<3?
- also i know i keep mocking and also fawning over flints stupid little ponytail but i think he for real deserves long gorgeous beautiful hair. like it would only make sense.
- theres so many guys in here from other things but only a little bit. i know i mentioned billy bones (SO FUNNY STILL) who keeeepsss following me but everyone else is sorta recogniseable. charles was in the 100 ik this. but like hi eeryone hii LOL
- "however what?" "however let me tell you a story. about a spaniard named vazquez." I THINK FLINT LITERALLY SAYS THIS HENEVER ANYHTING AWKWARD HAPPENS TO HIM. I THINK HE LITERALLY DROPS AND SMASHES A PLATE IN IKEA AND THEY COME OVER TO HIM AND HE JUST SAYS LET ME TELL YOU A STORY. I THINK THEY CATCH HIM NICKING 5P BAGS FROM TESCO AND HES LIKE HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT A GENTLEMAN VAZQUEZ. I THINK, PERHAPS, FLINT WOUL HIT SOMEONE WITH A CAR UNDER THE INFLUENCE. AND SIMPLY SAY THE URCA DE LIMA.............. IT WILL PAY FOR YOUR INSURANCE. GOD.
- also i dont know treausre island that well . do you guys think itd be worth a read at some point. not even wrt the show here just idk ik these guys are those guys <3
- i will say also tho btw. u know that reminds me of. i love it when ppl get rlly mad abt, like, funny re-imaginings of old stories, myth and folklore like this. SORRY. JUST SAYING. i remember of all the issues there were bbc merlin, ppl fucking fuming bc it disgraces arthurian legend. girlie i dont think colin morgan made patheitc little fuck me eyes for 5 seasons for authenticity.
- speaking of. sir percival billy bones is so funny. its like theyre keeping him around just to take the piss of their big strapping guy arent they.
- i also love gates. one like to slap his bald head
- ANNE? IS THAT HER NAME? I WANT HER CREEPY CRAWLY PUSSY SO BADLY. i realise thats her name. i think. shes also like... insanely fucking hot. im like obsessed with her a bit. its the hat. and the voice. i would not give a shit otherwise- i do admit.
- ALSO: THE SEX WORKERS AT THIS PORT ARE LITERALLY THE ONLY PEOPLE WITH ANY FUCKING COMPETENCE.
- I KNOW I KEEP GOINGON ABTO HIS HAIR BUT T. THE VERY DEFINITION OF T BOY SWAG I TBHINK IM ABOUT TO PUKE
Tumblr media
- NO WAY NO WAYYYY HE STINKS OF WEED SO BAD
- RIGHT UH- this is one of the issues of just putting uncollected thoughts into a post like this, ehrm. im approaching the scene i was warned about
- i had a feeling.... with vane. i was worried he was going to force himself on eleanor after the warnings- because certainly, his character is portrayed in a particular way thus far, to the point where it was like... well had i not been warned, i wouldnt think it, but yeah. ehrm. i guessed.. him - or at least, he would have sth to do with it, as he has here- but god. i forgot about max and i was just thinking: they wouldnt let her go, surely that makes no sense with how early we are into the show, unless its one of THOSE shows where characters are brought in and out like theres a fucking rotating door, with no rhyme or reason- but no ehrm.. yeah. :(
- and now jesus. eleanor girlie i know he ha slong hair but jesus dont just mount him cmon... cmon!!
- sighhh... ok!! end of ep 3. really sombre way to end but <3 there we go... I'LL drop this now. idk if i'll watch more tonight orrrr wht! :3 love and light

abt that post of immortal squad merlin, leon, mordred and morgana, i have spent DAYS of my life thinking abt their shenanigans n shit. one thing i like to touch upon on this story is morgana’s guilt and her carousel like journey of accepting it and moving on.
(TW: hanging, suicide, nooses, death, hallucinations)
theres obvisouly the very first down of when she finally realizes what the fuck she has done (as i have said in the other post) BUT that lasted about 100 years. after that she was ready to fuck around and find out and do shit n not think abt things too much (she also accidentally turned herself blonde which didnt help things at the time since a lot of ppl thought they were vampires or smth n wanted them dead n morgana suddenly with a new hairstyle certainly didnt help so they *did* magic their ways into the royal court at the time for protection purposes n also for possible chaos inducing gremlin purposes)
one that i have always been fond of is the low period of the 21st century. i would like to remind y’all (or inform yall if i hadnt tell u this) that these bitches cannot die. u can kill them.... for a bit. n then theyre back. sometimes tho the coming back process can be fucked with by external factors n it can take a while or even be threatened to follow through with the death thing.
morgana, around 2018, gets plagued by hallucinations of a woman getting hanged in a beautiful white dress from centuries ago. she hears a voice of a woman telling her things, things she doesnt entirely understand since theyre out of context but they all have the same message: she has done something wrong and it cannot be forgiven.
by 2018 these bitches have been alive for 1500 years. they do keep diaries just to not be forgotten but do u think they read them like everyday or something? NO. so truthfully they dont know the specifics of why the fuck theyre alive for so long or why they need to stay in fucking england but they do cuz they thing its important.
these hallucinations of a blonde man bleeding and dying, a black woman old and frail and so sad, a handsome brunnet with a skull for a face dressed in black, a long haired man miserable and tortured with a tall bulky man next to him old and tired, and lastly just a skeleton with long white hair, PLUS the hanging woman, PLUS that damn voice is slowly drivng morgana mad.
it culminates to her going to a ruined castle next to a lake. she gets glimpses of what shes done, not understanding completely and then suddenly, a blonde woman in red welcomes her and smiles. tells her shes not nothing wrong, shes forgiven. come lets say hello to your friends, lets get you changed.
she changes morgana to a night gown from centuries ago, beautiful but simple and deeply nostalgic. she comes to meet the people form the hallucionations but they look happy and healthy. the blonde man, her brother apparently, forgives her for what she has done and understands it. he steps away and the beautiful woman is standing in a simple blue dress. it feels like a sleepover suddenly when they start dancing around the castle grounds, laughing and twirling.
morgana gets to a balcony where she can see them all alive and happy, with merlin and leon and mordred as well, theyre all happy. she turns to the woman, who has a necklace with a family crest, their family crest the woman says, their sisters.
morgana’s magic acts up though, something is wrong. when she turns to the balcony the necklace is a noose, and shes beyond the balcony. she holds on for dear life and calls out for morgause who she knows is the woman in red. she looks cold, her eye looks wrong and shes not smiling anymore. she comes closer and whispers “it’s time to let go, sister” and pushes her out. she falls and her neck snaps, killing her.
merlin, mordred and leon feel it when it happens and theyre on the move immediately. merlin senses a familiar curse, and so he searches abt it int heir diaries. he finds it quickly, morgause and morgana and she did because of it. he had noticed morgana had distanced herself and had been down, beating herself for every little thing. staring at the air, screaming, talking to herself. they had tried to talk to her but she can and will lock herself out when she wants to.
they get in touch with other magic users and curse breakers, also spirit specialists. mordred gets real antsy whenever they visit both the body and the castle itself. when he felt morgana die he sought her out immediately and it was him that called merlin to say he found her, dead. he’s quiet during the process of getting her back, he feels watched and he doesnt like it.
leon and merlin are more hands on ‘lets try to find morganas spirit and free her of whatever curse morgause has on her this time’. they get faced with distorted versions of their friends, unrecgonizable to them, just another creature to beat.
they reach a bedroom where they see morgana standing, so the three charge at it. merlin gets in first but something pushes leon away and the door closes, impossible to open. as leon tries to destroy it only to watch it regenarate right infront of him, mordred turns around and knows that whoever is watching them is close, and hes been itching to kill it since hes stepped foot in the damn castle.
merlin learned from the curse breakers and spiritualists that the best way to break the curse on a ghost is to take their spirits to a middle plain where they can reach common ground and help the spirit come back home. he forms a link with morgana.
they both wake up in different lakes gasping for air. merlin is determined to find morgana and bring her back while morgana wantes to find merlin to get him back alone. they get plagued with visions, memories. the middle plane is fragile, and theyre both powerful sorcereres who are very VERY emotional. they come close to breaking it apart, trapping them both, but something pulls them back. merlin doesnt waste time and runs to morgana, he needs to find her and bring her back.
morgana is tired and she knows she shouldnt be saved. morgause, disguised as an old woman, acts as her guide and takes morgana’s hand back towards the lake she awoke from, intending to drown morganas spirit. halfway through, merlin finds them. he calls out to morgana but its no use shes still sinking.
he screams the only words that come to mind, “i forgive you” and that stops them dead in their tracks, making them turn around. morgana is confused and merlin steps closer to help her out. morgause though, is tired of this shit. she pulls both of them down, they shall drown together. but morgana, shocked and relieved by merlins words breaks the surface. but not merlin. she screams and swims around, she tries to look for him underwater but its too dark, its night time.
merlin himself blames himself for events he barely remembers. he too feels like he cant be forgiven. but he cant leave them behind. he knows he needs to do something important, he needs to live. so as morgana cries on the shore merlin comes back gasping for air, swimming to her as she comes back to the water for him.
they argue for each other, both self sacrificing idiots and self loathing fools. morgana tells him she knows she did the wrongdoings its a fact, shes evil n loathsome. merlin reminds her that everybody has forgiven her, centuries ago, he read their diaries. shes forgiven and shes good. now please come back. n they do.
mordred has kept himself busy with morgauses spirit and in her weakened state of losing both ther prey he goes ham on her, abusing his new found death related magic and tearing her apart. when he comes back to leon, who finally broke down the door (since morgause’s spirit is dead) and is inside with the other two very drenched magic idiots, they all gape at his black bloodied state.
so ye that it. i took obvious inspo from thohh and a bit from teenwolf also thobm and yeah. again this is all in good fun so!! dont take it too serious

I'm SO worried that we might not get a playable Mickey...it would be just so unfair and still it's a huge possibility :c
Not only ppl in fandom treat Mick REALLY awful (come on, no one blames Aqua for leaving without telling and then hiding Ven so no person, such as Ansem the Wise with his ppl or let's say Merlin could try to help him, for example-then why ta heck making Mick such a scapegoat? Like if he's the only character who acts stupid for the sake of plot-should I remind you how no one was doing ANYTHING during the first Terranort encounter? Is it because he's not a spiky-haired anime dude? I'm just sick of it already, it's feels AWFUL to be Mickey's fan at this fandom, character doesn't get what he deserves even from his very company, who treats him like a beanbag for children which HE'S NOT, and now ppl being like THAT, it HURTS, DAMN IT)
He used to be THE ONLY PERSON protecting ALL of the worlds for a decade, while having a Kingdom to be responsible for, he's been doing lots of thing OFF SCREEN and he just never gets attention HE DESERVES. I'D WANT to know more about him, how did he know about Sora and Riku to speak to them in their minds in the first game (IT WAS HIM), why he became so distant with Donald and Goofy most of the time? Why is he able to wield the keyblade from the dark realm, we've seen only Aqua doing so WHILE BEING ABSORBED BY DARKNESS, how ta heck did he become the King (not through fan theories, just SHOWING OR TELLING US HOW)? WE'VE GOT OSWALD, FOLKS, WHERE IS HE?
Phew....wow...wow, it is...longer than I planned. Dunno if someone will even read it, cause, you know, not that much ppl even care what ta heck Mickey is up to, and even more are just HAPPY to blame him for everything, that's all they need with him
I just wish we at least got some more information about character we love, but I'm afraid we won't even get his side of story, not even talking about him being playable...

I find UK shows do better at writing LGBT, POC, and even their white male characters better than in US. It's not always perfect but they give them more depths over seas. Skins, Merlin, Misfits, Sex Education, and Killing Eve. UK tends to push the bar, where American shows plays it safe 90% and it's so boring. Then creators wanna get mad at fans for critiquing their shows, when all we ask is for writers to do better.
UK TV is superior; if I do watch TV, it tends to be just British shows. My man is from Bristol and we have UK channels set up here and I think I like it for the very reason you just stated. It reminds me of when GRRM was writing ASOIAF and ppl kept saying to him “How are your female character so powerful, so well developed” and he was like “Because I write them like people?!”
The one thing I liked was how long TVD was. Make me a 22 episode British version of TVD and man, it'd beat everything. Matt would die of natural causes in season 2 completely out of the blue; Damon would be Aiden Turner’s vampire in Being Human - flawed but not problematic. Jumping shows yet again, Bonenzo was so Simon and Alicia in Misfits. God... now that’s how you do an unlikely couple reveal with a time jump.
