Another meta post.
Not Just Bikes has done an incredible job of making a lot of people aware of systemic problems in the US and Canada with city planning using the works of Strong Towns and in collaboration with the YouTube channel Climate Town has helped highlight how this problem will one day lead to climate catastrophe. Despite this, the channel owner, Jason, is not perfect or infallible. When he says on Bluesky that the US is a lost cause, for instance, he is promoting action that would greatly harm many and long term promotes the very climate catastrophe his channel seems to be against. While Jason would recommend you unsubscribe if you disagree on the matter, I would instead recommend you seek to change his mind. If you want to do so, please do not harras him. Unproductive dunking like tweeting, tooting, or blue skying "not just unsubscribed" or something is unproductive.
But, let me be clear, the people with the means to give up are also the people with the most means to advocate for things to be better. We should thus not give up and move to countries like the Netherlands but instead try and help make things better where you are now. If you can afford to move, you also are likely to have the means to get through living where you do more easily than many others.
If you care about the climate, if you care about you and the people you know having more livable places, if you care about the future, DO NOT GIVE UP. Despite how he feels, this is doomerism, our fates are not sealed. Get active in your community, spread the word, and talk to people.
For those not on bluesky, I will attach the posts in question. I am sorry for no alt text, I am too busy at work to copy them.

QUEERS: KEEP YOUR PASSPORT UPDATED
We can already see a rise in anti-Semitic attacks in places like NYC with the mask off nature of this new rhetoric. You are not safe from this rhetoric just because you live in a city. Berlin was a beacon of progressive values before the Nazi's took over. We don't know what's going to happen in 2 years time, but I will NOT satisfy these fascists with my death. And I advise the same for my queer family. Keep your passports up to date, pay attention to what's happening around you, arm yourselves and your community, and be willing and able to flee when it comes down to it. Stick together and find community. There's power in numbers. And most importantly, don't fucking die.
I love you all 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️❤️

I get frustrated with Jason from Not Just Bikes sometimes because he has adopted the euro mindset of looking down on NA and given up on thinking that better things are possible in NA. Shit sucks in the US and Canada with urbanism and housing and all that, but for all their talk about good bikes and cities houses everywhere in the Netherlands are going for San Francisco prices. He has never once pointed out a city in NA as an example of a place making good changes, only ever complains. I can get where he's coming from, but man you have millions of viewers in NA. Being doomer about all cities here is only gonna convince your audience change isn't possible and make you doomer predictions become reality.

A hundred years ago, you could get a train from almost any city to just about any other city on the continent, and even many towns and villages too. The reason those train stations don't exist anymore is because they were bulldozed, often to make room for highways, along with the walkable downtowns they were connected to. American cities were not built for the car. They were bulldozed for the car.

Heard a lot of arguments against high-speed rail along the lines of "it's redundant because planes" but here's the thing--I can take a full-sized bottle of shampoo on a train. I can stretch my legs out in front of me on a train. So far I haven't encountered a weight limit for my bags when boarding a train. I can take my goddamn bike on a train. Planes suck.

I have to like. titrate how often I watch NJB videos bc the stuff he talks about makes me SO ANGY and then I have to go outside and DEAL with the stuff he's talkin about on a regular basis and I just combust into a ball of rage. but one thing that is comforting is that he seems to be just as furious especially since he also has to deal with asshats in his comments who have no listening comprehension or ability to think outside their own consumerism-addled brains
anyway fuck these stupid ass fucking trucks ✌🏿
