sigh... sometimes i wanna put a ND headcanon on a high shelf away from people who seem to see Character Flaws and go "ah, it's because he doesn't understand social cues. criticism or irritation at his flaws is ableism".
no. no he just genuinely is conceited. he can also have the social cues issue but he's also conceited like textually. like it's not just 'socially awkward' to constantly talk down to someone or fucking. choose one of the lowest moments of a friend's life to go "well ahaha once again, this is why i didn't become a warlock. why didn't he sacrifice his immortal soul for a second time, age 24, like he did when he was 17 and was taken advantage of by a powerful demon? kinda sucks of him if you ask me" anyway i feel insane watching people talk about gale sometimes.

i know i never shut up about it but god i am still just. So Salty about how the show handles the dynamic between mayor jones and pericles for many reasons, and one of the biggest is that there are really strong overtones here of sexual assault.
a character who already brings to mind the Slimy, Shady Cis White Guy with Buried Allegations archetype:
takes advantage of the trust of someone who's doing something with him in secret--
(which will get that person in a disproportionate amount of trouble compared to him, if they're discovered)
--to catch him off guard so he can grab him, drug him, and do violent things to his body while he's unconscious; scars him for life in a way that is disabling and should cause a lot of ongoing suffering, which, like many other things that should have a strong negative impact on him physically or psychologically, the writers ignore; and dumps him there alone to discover what's been done to him when he wakes up.
specifically, he does this to someone from a marginalized group that's highly unlikely to be believed if they tell anyone what he did--and going by the fact that mayor jones never got in any trouble until present day, he wasn't.
goes out of the way to ruin the life of the victim and discredit him as thoroughly as possible, because he's a loose end and he needs to shut him up.
flees the scene and gets away scot free with this for twenty years, has a successful privileged career and is considered a pillar of the community in the meantime.
when his dirty secret, which he's been paranoid about finally facing consequences for after the victim has recently become a risk again, is discovered, it's a huge career-ending scandal.
is redeemed by the end, while his victim goes on to be the Monstrous Irredeemable Pure Evil Main Villain and also sexually abuse someone himself, which is played as horrific and traumatizing (as it should be).
more specifically, is portrayed as showing redeeming, heroic anti-villain qualities by backhanding the victim into a wall as hard as he can in present day.

You know how in mdzs, we talk about how Su Shi’s whole thing about the classism of their society would maybe be a legitimate point if he didn’t take out all of those frustrations on Lan Wangji, the one person who treats people as deserved irrespective of their class statuses? I feel the same way about Mu Qing and Xie Lian in tgcf.
Yes, a society in which one’s lot in life is determined by a person of high status happening to see the value of your skills is a terrible one to live in. Also, maybe attacking the one person of status who would fight to make you equal and challenge the corruption of society while simping for the very people who gleefully uphold the inequality you suffer under is… not a good choice.

freiren sounds so up my alley and the one thing that's holding me back from watching it is that I hate the costume designs.... this is not a freiren-exclusive problem i feel that way about most fantasy anime these days it just bothers me with freiren because otherwise i Want to watch it
#i have trouble putting the beef into words but here is an attempt:#the outfits feel too much like something you'd see someone wearing In Real Life and it breaks my immersion#this would be less annoying to me if it felt equal between male and female characters but the boy outfits feel more fantasyish#but it feels more pronounced with the girl characters#makes it feel like the goal was 'make them cute and fashionable by Anime Standards' was the primary goal#and 'character build or worldbuild via costume design' ws at best a distant second#i could abide Aesthetic First costume design if it was an aesthetic i like but i don't like the aesthetic theyre going for#feels overly cluttered with small details that feel very Modern to me#and also it always bugs me when it feels like a show defaults to Thighs Visible on Only the girl character designs#freiren does not seem particularly fanservicey and that almost makes it more grating for me#if it didn't Smack Of Gender it wouldnt bug me#if short shorts are an element of your fantasy setting why not have at least one dude wear em is all im sayin#anyway apologies to any freiren fans who stumble upon this post like i said it sounds good and i want to watch it#and am happy you can enjoy what i cannot#rambles
