J-Fashion Terms for Beginners Part 1
Tumblr media
Menhera - An online subculture themed around erasing mental health stigma that has gained traction in mainstream media due to its usage of cutesy vent art. Isn't exactly a fashion style, but it tends to be associated with Yami Kawaii and Yume Kawaii (with Yami Kawaii elements) when worn as fashion.

Not just a fashion, but an art movement
Tumblr media
Yami Kawaii - Also known as "sickly cute", this fashion style is a Kawaii fashion that strays away from stereotypical cuteness by adding medical elements (such as accessories shaped like pills or bandages) and a gloomier color palette (such as pastels but with the colors being even more faded and faint). While in mainstream media it is more similar to J-Goth fashion, it's not uncommon for it's more cutesy roots to be present. While it does reference mental health like the Menhera subculture, Yami Kawaii also focuses on physical health conditions too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being sick or filled with darkness, doesn't mean you can't be cute
Tumblr media
Gurokawa - Translates as "grotesque cute", "gross cute" or "creepy cute", this J-Fashion style and aesthetic actually originates from Decora! It's earliest mainstream use was by singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and the style has grown in popularity ever since! In comparison to the previous styles, Gurokawa is over the top and pulls no punches regarding horror elements. Outfits in this style feature motifs such as blood, internal organs, cute monsters, eyeballs and cute characters committing acts of violence. The color palette here is all over the place, and your typical Gurokawa coord can either use only pastels like it's other Anti-Kawaii cousins, or it can follow it's Decora roots and use brighter colors such as neons.

Hello? Hello!
Hi, welcome. This is a Death Note poll blog! Dedicated to evaluating what certain given characters would do if they stumbled upon the lethal notebook itself. They are to be sorted by these six options:
They pick it up and kill those who wronged them They pick it up and kill criminals They pick it up and kill random people They pick it up and give it to the authorities They pick it up and do nothing with it They don't pick it up I don't know this character/Show results
Submissions are open! Rules + explanations for each option UTC:
This blog is currently only being ran by Mod Misa (he/they/vi)
You can ask for any character! But I reserve the right not to post them.
If you want to provide "propaganda" (aka an argument to vote for x or y option) do try to provide it on either a reblog or a separate ask, so to not interfere with anyone else's experience voting
When submitting a character, please include their source and/or a picture of them. If it's an anon ask and you don't provide either, I can't guarantee they'll be posted.
Explanation for the poll options:
Real people are not allowed on here, not actors, not musicians, not streamers (yes this includes vtubers), no one who actually exists.
According to the rules of the Death Note, a character cannot kill themself through it. Sorry. Figure out something else.
"They pick it up and kill those who wronged them": Upon coming across the note, the character decides to enact revenge upon someone by killing them with the note. They could become Kira.
"They pick it up and kill criminals": Upon coming across the note, the character decides to kill those they deem as criminals or evildoers of some kind. They would become Kira.
"They pick it up and kill random people": Upon coming across the note, the character decides to kill people, seemingly without rhyme or reason. They might actually be people at random, or there might actually be some motive other than personal revenge or "justice." They could become Kira.
"They pick it up and give it to the authorities": Upon coming across the note, the character hands it over to their authorities, be it the police, the government, or some other form of authority in their context. They would not become Kira.
"They pick it up and do nothing with it": Upon coming across the note, the character keeps it, but doesn't take any planned or continuous action with it. They might either save it for a specific occasion, or never use it at all. They would not become Kira.
"They don't pick it up": Upon coming across the note, the character ignores it. They could not become Kira.
"I don't know this character/Show results": What's on the tin. Who tf are you??

hi guys! i know it's been a while since you've all heard from me. unfortunately, this return isn't under the best circumstances.
i'm really struggling right now. i recently made the difficult decision of quitting my job - the mental and physical strain it was putting on me was unbearable, and it reached a boiling point when i was s*xually h*rassed by a customer. my autism already makes it very difficult for me to maintain a job in a fast-paced, crowded, or stressful environment. i can't combine that with a place where i was consistently harassed by customers. i'm looking for something new asap, but i don't know how long it will take, and i'm already a week late on my rent ($730.)
i hate to ask for help, but i really don't know what else to do. even if i get my rent paid, i still have other bills to take care of, as well as other living costs such as supplies for my two cats. my bank account is currently in the negative.
if you have even a dollar to spare, i'd appreciate the help so much. i have no family i can turn to and no quick-fix way to get through this all on my own. i can only take on so many art commissions at a time, but i have decided to provide a few other services in the meantime. if you'd like to buy something, please message me here on tumblr or add me on discord (nep#7626).
tarot card readings - $5
1, 3, or 5 cards. either general daily readings or an answer for a specific question.
6 song music playlist - $3 (+ .50 cents for each additional song)
a custom playlist based on a fictional character, oc, ship, theme, genre, or pretty much anything else. the only rule is that i won't make playlists for any gross ships or characters.
with all that being said, if you'd like to donate, here are my links! and if you do help out by buying something, donating, or just by reblogging this, thank you.
c*shapp / v*nmo / p*ypal
goal: $730 / $730

heyyy! seeing as ace week is coming up here in a few weeks, i was wondering if some people could fill out my ace week survey. the intent is just to gather data about the community and its members (and also non-aces and their perceptions of us), and i promise that everything stays anonymous. i'm just curious. (idk where this should go lol. lmk if there is a different/better place to put this)

An Important Message from the Stop That Ninjas
Now that the Hogwarts Legacy game has been released, we wanted to give some clarification on how YFHA$ is going to handle Wizarding World content going forward, both here and in the Discord server.
To be clear: we strongly condemn JKR and the bigoted and imperialist themes present in her work. These concerns are present in the original Harry Potter books/movies, post-canon sources such as Pottermore, and the newer releases such as Fantastic Beasts and Hogwarts Legacy. We stand with the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities, among others, against these harmful behaviors. If you disagree, you are not welcome in our space.
Now for the housekeeping:
Both our blog and Discord have always been discourse-free zones. The bolded statement above is our official position. Any further commentary, either in our Discord server or in our Tumblr mentions/asks, will be deleted and those commenters shall be blocked. This is to protect our mental health as well as that of the people who follow us for anti-Autism $peaks catharsis.
We are still putting together a final rule as to whether we will continue to accept flag requests from the Wizarding World franchise, as well as what to do with any requests that may be in our inbox. We have a massive backlog from before Corona that we are still working through. What we can tell you is that we will not be deleting any flags that are already published on the blog as of today, February 10th 2023.
If you are a member of the Discord server, please see the #announcements channel for further guidelines.
We are aware of the close relationship many autistic people have with fandoms, and we know it's not easy to just discard a special interest. That said, we also have to be cognizant of the communities who have been harmed by this situation. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

i'd like to clear up a misconception that seems to be perpetuated in the reblogs.
girly kei is not synonymous with girly fashion
"kei" (系) as a suffix doesn't mean fashion- ファッション does! kei actually means type, system, archetype, or stereotype depending on the context. for example, a google search for "フェアリー系" (fairy kei) wouldn't get you the 80s inspired yumekawa fashion and aesthetic- you'd be met with pokemon like sylveon and clefable. "ファアリー系男の子" won't get you masculine fairy kei coords, it'll get you girls magazine articles about the "fairy boy" archetype, where a boy is soft, charming, and sweet outside but secretly manipulative and messed up inside.
girly kei is an established alternative fashion that's been around for over a decade, not a descriptor for all "girly" jfashion. it doesnt use "女らしい" (the closest japanese translation for the english word, meaning feminine), it uses the katakana for the english word "ガーリー” aka "girly". it refers to a specific group of substyles of fashions and aesthetic, including dark girly (often misnamed as "jirai" in the west due to the stereotype of jirai, aka self-proclaimed anti-recovery "psycho bitches" liking the style, which features darker color pallets and themes and edgier acessories), retro girly (often featuring themes of retro uniforms and plaid patterns), sweet (often pastel and with even more bows and lacing than your average girly kei substyle), casual girly (a more mature, toned-down girly substyle), and many, many others.
on a similar note, "larme kei" is a western misnomer. larme magazine didn't invent or popularize what the west refers to as larme kei! larme actually features girly kei - it's even in the magazine name and many headers within lookbook sections. however, larme mostly focuses on a few substyles, so when people say "larme kei" in japan, they are saying "the type of coord featured in larme". unfortunately, due to the common misconception that "kei" means "fashion" and refers to any alternative fashion, the west took this term and ran with it. although not technically incorrect when referring to the types of girly kei larme would feature, it's more accurate to refer to the coord and fashion as girly kei.
if you get anything from this post, please remember that while most girly kei substyles are highly feminine, not all feminine jfashion is girly kei.
anyways, todays post will be out later today as im having trouble finding decent resolution images- sorry!

J-Fashion Terms for Beginners 3: Electric Boogaloo
Tumblr media
Angura Kei: A Visual Kei substyle inspired by traditional Japanese underground theater performances (Angura = Underground), but it is occasionally associated with Ero-Guro Visual Kei bands. People who wear Angura typically wear traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos, military uniforms, and school uniforms (seifukus and gakurans usually) but with a gothic twist or references to the supernatural (such as those triangle handkerchiefs worn by ghosts in Japanese folklore). It isn't uncommon to see them wear shironuri makeup as that was worn by Angura actors during the 1960s and 1970s. From what I've seen, Angura isn't typically a style one wears day to day due to its over the top and elaborate nature. Some known Angura Kei bands are: MUCC, cali≠gari (though they are more known for Ero-Guro), Zombie Lolita and Inugami Circus-dan.

A truly theatrical blast from the past...
Tumblr media
Erokawa: Translates as "erotic cute", this aesthetic and style is also known as Erokakkoi (translates as "erotic cool"). Erokawa contrasts most kawaii trends by incorporating the concepts of sexiness seen in the West. While it is mostly a "visual art" type of kawaii style, I have seen outfits that do match this style; they tend to be mainly pastel clothes styled after lingerie, actual lingerie, clothes that share elements with Agejo Gyaru, shirts with sexy kawaii girls on them, or just your typical "tight sexy outfit with references to kawaii culture or ecchi on it. For accessories you'll see chokers, leg garters, handcuffs, harnesses and occasionally cat ears. The idea of cuteness is associated with neoteny, fragility, innocence and youthfulness; the idea of sexiness is associated with adulthood, experience, excitement and maturity. Sexiness can technically be seen as what cuteness is meant to evolve into once we all turn from children to adults. But Japan is famous for loving everything that can be considered "cute" and not approving of "non-cute" things unless they are made "cuter" for mainstream media, and yes...this partially includes sexuality that is natural for adult women to have. Enter famous Japanese Idol, Kumi Koda. Unlike most idols who's contractual purity is stricter than a Disney Channel star's, Kumi broke the mold by taking erotic elements in her artistic style and showing how they too can be seen as valid and acceptable. In contrast to other "sexy" kawaii trends, Erokawa was created with feminism and for women to take ownership of their sexuality.

Let's get sexy~...and adorable!
Tumblr media
Ero-Guro Kei: If one thinks of Visual Kei they are most likely thinking of one of these subgenres and styles; Kote Kei (means "old school kei", this is basically how Visual Kei bands dressed in the 90s), Tanbi Kei (means "aeshetic school", this style is inspired by classic European fashion), or Ero-Guro Kei, the style we're discussing here. In case the name didn't give it away already, Ero-Guro Kei basically means "erotic" and "grotesque". As described by the website TV Tropes, this style is meant to be an Interplay of Sex and Violence. Most Ero-Guro Kei bandmembers tend to wear clothes similar to Kote Kei, but with more exposed skin (i.e. not wearing a shirt or wearing a low-cut one) and tons of S&M/bondage or fetish elements like chokers, corsets, harnesses, leather and lace or mesh worn together and masquerade masks. Despite this, for most people the "Ero-Guro" part in Ero-Guro Kei usually comes from the vulgar and raunchy lyrics in their songs coupled with horrifying music videos. Some famous Ero-Guro Kei bands include but are not limited to: cali≠gari, Dir En Grey (during their earlier albums), Kagerou and ANTI-KRANKE.

Okay, just this once, I'll respond to this ask to tell you all that gimmick blogs do, in fact, count as real people. Unless YOU submit your OWN gimmick blog (for which you'll have to either be off anon or dm me), I'll just delete the ask.

Can you tell me a random Tensura headcanon that you like or came up with? :)
This was a hard one, so I went with something particularly general!
It has been stated by Fuse that each media form is its own 'dimension', of sorts. Alternate universus where there are mild differences. The recent movie is in fact proof of it! It is no accident that there are big changes made that don't occur outside of it. For instance, the mirror demon lord in one of the games. The Movie in the anime. And a few other less noticeable detail differences. It is important to note that I'm pretty sure Fuse had SOME kind of hand in each adaptation of the WN, which is why this stands out.
Anyways, this was not an accident, and not just money grabbing or latent alterations. As for my headcanon, I believe that Fuse did this knowing full well how Fandom works. Essentially, he made deliberate changes to help prevent fan gatekeeping! This way, anyone who says things along the lines 'lol the anime is garbage where tf did this man come from the studio suckkkks you aren't real fans if you ain't read the Manga/WN/LN' are very clearly proven to be ignorant jerks by people who understand the author's intentions!
Of course, there are still occasions where things are added or removed at the displeasure of fans of the original, but that is to be expected from so many different adaptations and each one's individual limitations and budgets.
Just, I feel like Fuse has had some kind of experience with fandom toxicity. That's basically it.
