Leiopython albertisii
( D'Albert's water python or the northern white-lipped python)
Look at the colors!!

This *big* guy is the white lip python! It can grow to 7 feet long and it's habitat is the lowland forests of new Guinea! It has the capability to eat small to medium size birds and mammals and uses heat-sensitive pits near the upper and lower jaw to hunt its food in the night! This big guy is suited to be a pet too!

I don't have any snake friends to share with, and my lizard friends don't much get it, but I'm too excited not to share with someone! XD
I have a northern white lip that I got with the intention of breeding in the future, but for now I'm enjoying the challenge of taming down a snake we all know as being highly defensive.
I've had him for about a year now, and I just realized that I don't remember the last time I've been bitten or musked on! He hardly even tries to jump anymore. Sure, he'll never be as docile as a ball python, but we've made so much progress, and it feels amazing to be earning his trust. With enough care and love, even traditionally "spicy" snakes can be calmed
Oh wow, what a wonderful accomplishment!! That first year with snakes like white lips is always the hardest, it sounds like you're making huge progress! There's no better feeling than realizing a very defensive snake is starting to trust you - I've got a handful of wild-caught ratsnakes that weren't releasable due to injury, and whenever they don't bite me when I'm handling them, it feels like a bigger honor than when my captive-bred snakes fall asleep on me!
And good luck with the future breeding project! White lips are amazing snakes, I can't wait until the day when they're commonly available captive-bred.

Drawing/painting of a Northern White-Lipped Python! I absolutely adore these snakes, so I just had to try my hand at drawing one. The model for this drawing was spiceyspaghet’s snake on Instagram.

Notes:
All children born under the Black Sun have black daemons, furthering the superstition surrounding the supposed curse.
Witchers’ daemons can’t settle but their prefered shape is usually the animal of their humans’ witcher school. Daemons can only take the form of non-magical animals so a witcher from the School of the Wolf could have a wolf daemon but a witcher from the School of the Griffin couldn’t have a griffin daemon. It would instead take the shape of a non-magical bird of prey like a hawk, falcon, or eagle.
When witchers undergo the Trial of the Grasses, one of the mutagens prevents their daemons from settling. It’s considered a tactical advantage for them stay unsettled because it allows them to better assist their humans in combat against different magical creatures.
I made Geralt’s daemon turn into a shrike because part of their scientific name is derived from the Latin word Lanius, which means butcher. Shrikes are also called butcherbirds because they’re carnivorous and impale their prey on spikes.

What’s your take on keeping white lipped pythons? (Mostly northerns but I’ve heard of southerns starting to be captive bred?) Have you worked with any before? I’ve done some research for myself since it’s one of my dream snakes but I wanted to hear what other people think about them ^^ love your blog by the way, hope you’re having a lovely day/evening!
They're super cool, but I've never been lucky enough to work with any before. I've only even seen them in person a handful of times. My take on keeping them now is that they mostly belong with advanced keepers who want to take a shot at breeding them, because most of them right now are wild-caught and breeding projects haven't really taken off yet.
Beyond the difficulty of finding a captive-bred baby (as it stands right now, if you want a white-lipped python, you will be getting a wild-caught snake 99 times out of 100), they'd make pretty solid pets. They tend to be great eaters and they're not very fragile. I'd put them solidly as an intermediate-level snake - they get to be big (7 feet is average for northerns, and southerns get a bit bigger at around 8-9 feet), and they're semi-arboreal so they need a large, tall enclosure. Their care isn't super intense, they like it hot with humidity at least 60%. They'd probably be a popular intermediate snake if they were easier to breed!
White-lipped pythons are super awesome, but until we start regularly seeing captive-bred babies, I think they belong in the wild and with keepers who can put in the work to establish captive breeding populations! That's my take for most snakes that aren't regularly bred in captivity.
