Nitter is dead, other instances are sure to follow
So, for anyone who doesn't know, Nitter is/was was an alternative way to view Twitter anonymously and without an account. It was also a way to bypass the lockout bs for non-users.
Now, regardless of how I've always felt about Twitter, I feel anybody should be able to access info and content from a site based mainly in user-generated content (actually, I'm for freedom of information in general, but one thing at a time). It make no sense not to be able to and may even encourage someone to become a user at some point (I know I'm not just going to sign up for a random site if I don't at least have a basic idea about the content).
Either way, I hope* to get a list out of still functional instances before the hammer drops on all of them.
Also, I can't really tell anyone what to do on this matter, but I recommend that if you're someone who mainly uses Twitter to promote your work that you start branching out elsewhere as only people with accounts are gonna be able to see your stuff.
To elaborate, this means less eyes on your work and less chance to grow your audience further. Not only that, but if the only way to contact you it through one site (especially one they can't view), someone liking your work may not be enough to get them to sign up just to contact/commission you.
Please spread this around, and not even just on here, but on Twitter itself too, if possible. I'd do it myself but I don't have/want an account and have my reasons for it.
*I say 'hope' because I know my track record sucks sometimes on completing tasks.

Hey, I believe it was you who steared me towards nitter.net as way to check twitter without an account. That site seems to be broken, do you have any other twitter alternatives?
Nitter keeps being said to be dead but I still use nitter.poast.org
I usually search for instances through google and sites like

Welp, Twitter's new changes around being logged in means nitter.net and its instances no longer work.
And no, Musk, this isn't gonna make me join Twitter. Arsehole.

What Happened with Nitter?
Nitter, a Twitter alternative front-end, has encountered numerous obstacles, potentially leading to its downfall.
Key setbacks include the removal of guest accounts and the imposition of rate limitations on real accounts, significantly affecting its functionality. Furthermore, the suspension of the nitter.net domain by the registrar Njalla has added to its accessibility challenges. These developments have sparked concerns about the viability of Nitter’s continued operation. The creator of Nitter has acknowledged these issues, painting a pessimistic picture for the platform’s future.

Sorry if someone already shared it but to view a thread without loging in, you can replace "twitter.com" (or whatever else it is) by "nitter.net", which is just a 3rd party that displays the twitter stuff on a different UI (private twitters are still hidden for example). It can be a little clunky (having to reload because pictures didn't load) but it works and it's the only thing I have as someone without an account.
This is great to know, I didn't know about this before! The thing I'm concerned about is it uses an unofficial API, and can be nuked at any time. To be fair, the official APIs got nuked too.
From a preservation and archive point of view, I'd like to have as few steps between the source and the archive (Tumblr post), so copypasta it is!

When I tried to visit the official Twitter of a franchise via the nitter.net frontend, it said the user wasn't found, but if I go there normally the account seems to be just fine. Weird. Maybe something's up with Nitter.

HOW is nitter working for you?? It's not working for me. I'm going to explode omg
Well, it was working still with nitter.mint.lgbt for a bit (at least on user pages and like 5% of the time on individual tweets), but as of this weekend, yeah, it's gone bust and all the instances are dead - in fact, the writing's been on the wall all month.
Aw well, so long, Twitter (not X). You stunk total butt, but at least you had some good artists and memes (that hopefully at least in part migrate to better platforms) and may have been the final step needed in proving to the average Joe that Elon Musk is one of the biggest blights on humanity in an industry filled with them!

Functional Nitter Instances
Sorry it's a day late, but here it is.
So, like the file says, I didn't go crazy with the testing, so there some instances may have more or less hiccups than previously noted.
Anyway, I set it up this way just in case I may need to make changes or if someone sends me a link to another functional one.
Also going to throw these two links in here as they may also be helpful:

if you really want to see my twitter stuff yet you don't have an account or don't use it, then you can look at it by nitter. eliminates the annoying "REGISTER TO THE FUNNY ELON MUSK SITE" popup, but the downside is it's often sluggish or doesn't load images

Today I discovered Nitter was essentially killed off by Twitter's updates and I got to create a Bluesky account because - suddenly - it didn't ask my phone number for SMS verification this time.
Alright, let's see how this thing works.
