I think with the amount of knee jerk backlash against people portraying queer characters or writing about them, I think something needs to be said. Here's my hot take, but I don't think it's all that hot of a take.
You can't appropriate or steal queer culture as a lived experience. It's not romanticizing or making light out of anything, if queer culture is your lived experience.
Now, that's not to say that corporations and homophobes/queerphobes/transphobes don't take from queer people, and that's very true and an injustice that happens. Queer baiting in media is bad, portraying negative stereotypes is bad, writing without research is not good.
But with the amount of closeted queer people out there, and the fact that everyone's experiences and relationships to their sexuality and gender is different, we cannot gatekeep this. We cannot say that unique pronouns and gender expression is for queer people only, so it cannot be appropriated.
Appropriation is when people steal and disrespect someone's culture, in which it is a closed culture or religion. But anyone can be queer, that's not a select few people, that's not a single lived experience, it's millions.
So, people like Harry Styles, who is bisexual, is not appropriating queer culture. People portraying queer characters, such as Kurt Connor, should not be outed, just because people thought it was wrong. People like Lil Nas X and Nikkie de Jager from NikkieTutorials, should not have been outed.
Straight cis and allo people should be able to explore and interact with identity, without being accused of being gay or queer.
If we want queer identities to be accepted and normalized, we need to stop gatekeeping it. I don't care if you think people are just starting a "trend", lived experiences of unique individuals are not for you to dissect and criticize.
And if queer people themselves, want to identify with queer slurs, like queer itself, that's not your room to judge. I don't personally use the f slur or the t slur, because I don't think it's mine to reclaim, but there are many people that do, it's not my place to gatekeep that.
As long as people are not hateful or harmful towards other people, you have no right to gatekeep or judge them.

The condo was now officially on the market, thus leaving Peter's inbox flooded with offers from recent university graduates to young couples trying to start their own families, people who are trying to stay above the crushing housing shortage by snatching up this cheap place.
There was much to do, still: the final bedroom still needed painted and his office equipment set up, and he still awaited for his Petition for Relocation to finish processing so he can fully move into his new place and hand the condo's keys over to the buyer.
And here: packing up the remains of his old home. With a satisfying plastic rip of packaging tape, Peter tossed the roll onto the bed and heaved the box into the living room, taking it to the ever-growing pile in the corner. He wiped at his forehead as he returned to the bedroom. "Whoo, alright..." Peter said, crossing his arms and looking around the room which was now bare, even the bed that down to a plain white bed set and two pillows, which he'll have the movers take last on moving day. His observing gaze landed on the closet, its door cracked open. He had most of his clothing packed, but it wouldn't hurt to organize it once more, would it? He picked up a flattened box and assembled it, setting it by his feet and sliding the door open wider.
For a task that was supposed to be mindless, Peter found that his mind was stirring as he sorted through the junk. Every piece he picked from the closet he paused to mull over, opening the compass with its tarnished brass, turning over the extra ball bearing for his aerial silks setup that he was sure he was going to need someday, wiping the dust off the age palette kit with expired makeup, kept because it was a limited edition Nimya box by the Nikkie de Jager, herself. Peter had always wanted to alter it to make it more durable, coat it with resin, perhaps, and line the inside with velvet. But he had never gotten around to it, and looking at his schedule ahead of him, he likely never will, so... he set the palette box aside.
And that was how what was meant to be twenty minutes of work stretched beyond its deadline, Peter finding long-forgotten trinkets, getting lost in the memories and old intentions of why he had kept them for so long, weighing the value of it and trying to predict the potential of future use before deciding to set it in the packing box, or to the opposite pile for disposal.
How had he gotten so much stuff? How had he let everything sit in his closet for so long that dust had collected on most of them like the growth of a second skin? I should be wearing gloves, Peter had thought too late as he paused to wipe his hands clean on his sweatpants. The more he dug through his closet, the more it began to remind him of home. The fort, from the stubborn scent of salt in the scratchy blanket he never used, and the algal perfume in the leatherbound books he never read. More and more, Peter was brought back to that day, that particular day, when he was made to hurry through his room and pack what he absolutely wanted in the two suitcases Arthur loaned him after delivering the news that Peter was Berwald's problem from then on. Of course, the clothes would disappear when Peter outgrew them, but how had he managed to keep these after all these years? They had practically ceased to exist when Peter saw he had no need for them, his life under Berwald's care and love proving more than comfortable enough to no longer warrant holding on to these.
Still, as he scrubbed his sleeves and popped open his keepsakes, a sense of nostalgia bloomed within him, that little boy glee stretching his grin from ear to ear as he leafed through crumbly comic issues, unrolled a pair of military-issued wool socks, carefully moved the arms and legs of a faded kaiju action figure, and --
"Oh, my god!" Peter chuckled and pulled out an old friend. A vintage box of the HMS Beagle. This one was intensive as hell; the kit boasted over one thousand pieces, with top-quality decals to make the model look as close to the real ship as possible. Only the most dedicated and attentive could complete this...
... And Peter did. So long ago, in fact, and he distinctly remembered begging Arthur for another kit that he never received. So, why did Peter still have this aged box--?
And so quickly, as Peter set the box on his lap and eased the top off, did his life seem to drain from him.

Letters. Yellowed envelopes and curling postage stamps, faded pen ink and even coffee stains on one of them, the letters filled the box and left Peter's insides brittle and cold.

Warm, large brown eyes that raked over Peter's young body, beautiful lips that Peter only wanted the most innocent kiss from, finding and tainting skin that Peter never wanted them to go. Hands that --
I do you and then you do me, okay?
He didn't need to read the letters.
Peter blinked, clawing his nails into the carpet to drag himself back to the present. He worked through the murkiness of his mind to find out why he would even need to tell himself that, until he found the temptation it responded to: that he wanted to read them.
He didn't need to read the letters. He could put the box away, the unread letters still untouched, or even burned to unholy ashes, and live the rest of his life with the uncertainty. Because calling up memories through hypnosis carried a risk of manufacturing memories, didn't it? He could live with the tiny chance that it was all fake this entire time, and just not open the letters.
So, why did Peter sift through the pile, turning each over until he found the very first one he'd never opened, among the many he had never opened? Perhaps his hope that it was all unreal was greater than his self-preservation; perhaps by opening the letter, it can repair his childhood, changing Andy from the monster of Peter's miserable imagination back to the beautiful boy he once loved.
Peter found the letter he never opened, one of many that he tucked away into the box when mail call came.
That's a good boy.

MET GALA
Nikki de Jager
I first drew my centre line and measured up my proportions before I began my sketch. After i had made an outline of my figure I went into it using a light layer of watercolour from which I built up my skin tone and facial features. I then moved onto the dress, using a teal watercolour paint i created a base layer for my dress and moved my paintbrush in the direction of the dress which was from left to right at an angle which followed the curves of the body. I built layer upon layer of watercolour adding layers of a pale yellow to represent the lighter colour tulle that was used. When I was satisfied with the layers I had created I began on the smaller details such as the flowers, crown and the large bow again using watercolour. I worked into them many times to really build the colour and make them pop. In the future, to improve my work, I will use less water on my paintbrush to gain more controlled lines and sharpen my facial features to make them look more accurate and true to the photo. To finalise my piece, I went into it using yellow and blue inks to replicate that of the artist by flicking the ink at my page and moving it in different directions to create a messy yet controlled look.

the sydney morning herald threatening to out rebel wilson during pride month is disgusting but honestly not unexpected. not only because the press have been hounding her for her weight, her weight loss, fertility, age, random information about her that they have no right to, for so long - i also expected this kind of shit because more and more, we witness celebrities being forced or pressured to come out. portia de rossi, neil patrick harris, nikkie de jager (nikkietutorials), becky albertalli, jameela jamil, now rebel wilson. it doesn’t matter how much i do or don’t like them. doesn’t even matter if i completely hate someone or think they "deserve" it. it’s not just about that person, it’s about our community and our autonomy.
it’s not really just the media. there’s been this strange shift in public opinion from "outing someone is always wrong" to "you shouldn’t out someone, but i don’t like that celebrity so they deserve it". a lot of that comes with ideas like "it’s only bad to out people who would be in danger if they came out" which is a very fucking weird thing to say. how would you, a stranger, even know whether that person is safe to come out? does it matter? where do you draw the line for safe vs unsafe? if they won’t get killed, is that enough? if their family doesn’t disown them? if their career doesn’t go down the drain? if gay marriage is legal in their country, so they won’t be *too* oppressed? if it’s only *a little bit* traumatic? it doesn’t matter if that person is "safe enough". you do not fucking out people, because that takes away their basic right to privacy and is inherently homophobic and transphobic. it sets a dangerous precedent that will ultimately affect much more vulnerable people in the long run.
the cherry on top of all this: it was a gay man who threatened to out rebel wilson, giving her two days notice that he would expose her relationship in a gossip column. i am terribly ashamed of parts of our community right now. get your act together.

Dick's Prikkels: De Wereld Op Zijn Kop
- De beroofde Ans was donderdag jarig en werd 77 jaar. Als steun had Radio West een mooie kaartenactie georganiseerd. Een medewerker kwam ze rond 10.00 uur brengen en ze werden omstebeurt voorgelezen. Het slachtoffer was vorige week van haar tas beroofd en kwam in het Westeindeziekenhuis terecht. Ze moest meerdere operaties ondergaan maar ze besloot toch haar verjaardag te vieren. Ans toonde zich duidelijk ontroerd door de grote stapel kaarten die ze kreeg! Er was een speciale feestelijke kamer ingericht waar ze kon verblijven.
- Het is volgende week flink raak op het spoor. In Den Haag, Zoetermeer, Gouda, Delft, Alphen aan den Rijn, Rijswijk, Voorburg, Waddinxveen en Boskoop vallen treinen uit vanwege werkzaamheden.
- Het aantal kinderen dat weleens spijbelt om op vakantie te kunnen gaan, is terug op het niveau van vóór de coronacrisis. Dat blijkt uit een analyse van de verkiezingsuitslag en de voorkeursstemmen op Pieter Omtzigt in 2021 en nieuwe gegevens van het EenVandaag Opiniepanel van deze week die met deze site zijn gedeeld.
- De nieuwe seizoenen van de talkshows Op1 op NPO 1 en Humberto op RTL 4 zijn maandag begonnen met bijna evenveel kijkers. Respectievelijk stemden er 669.000 en 630.000 mensen af op de programma’s, meldt Stichting KijkOnderzoek. Beide talkshows leggen het af tegen Vandaag Inside, dat eerder begon én vorige week al terugkeerde op tv. Het SBS6-programma was maandag goed voor 887.000 kijkers. Nieuwsuur, dat Pieter Omtzigt te gast had, scoorde op NPO 2 op hetzelfde tijdstip 608.000 kijkers.
- Negentien bewoners van de straat Poolster in Katwijk mogen samen één miljoen euro gaan verdelen. De straat is als winnende uit de bus gekomen bij de Postcode Loterij. Arie speelt slechts drie maanden mee met de loterij, en kan nu zijn geluk niet op. Hij wint 35.714 euro. 'Misschien ga ik nu wel een autootje kopen.'De Poolster is één woonblok met daarbij een school. 'Tjeetje, dat zal dan misschien wel een ton worden', droomt de bewoonster al. Ze moet nog even bekomen van het bedrag. Er zijn bedragen uitgereikt van 35.714 euro tot 107.143 euro, afhankelijk van het aantal loten waarmee zij meespelen in de Postcode Loterij. De loterij wil meerdere trekkingen gaan doen!
- Een kabaal van jewelste maandag rond lunchtijd boven Zuid-Holland. Om 12.15 uur vlogen twee F-35 gevechtsvliegtuigen over onder meer Den Haag, Leidschendam en Voorburg. Mensen hoeven zich geen zorgen te maken, meent majoor Wilko ter Horst-Delstra van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht.
Het is even na 12.15 uur als menig broodtrommeltje buiten op picknicktafels staat te trillen. Twee JSF-jachtvliegtuigen razen met oorverdovend geluid over. 'Ze passeerden op 1200 voet, dat is ongeveer 450 meter', legt majoor Ter Horst-Delstra uit.
Volgens hem gaat het om een reguliere route, die Defensie vaker vliegt. 'Het is vandaag mooi weer, dan oefenen ze soms 'op zicht'. Als dat samenvalt met vakantie en veel mensen die buiten zijn, dan krijg je dat mensen zich dit afvragen.'
- Een nieuw schoolsysteem doet veel stof opwaaien op het Picasso Lyceum in Zoetermeer. Dinsdagochtend gaan de leerlingen voor het eerst naar school, nadat de docentengroep maandag een kick-offdag had. Voor de ouders en de leerlingen is er echter nog veel onduidelijkheid. Ze weten niet waar ze aan toe zijn, terwijl de middelbare school er zelf nog steeds honderd procent achter staat. Maar hoe werkt het systeem precies?
- De groei van het aantal inwoners veroorzaakt een toename van het aantal basisschoolleerlingen in Leidschendam-Voorburg. In 2042 zijn er elf klassen van dertig leerlingen méér dan bij de start van het aanstaande schooljaar, blijkt uit berekeningen van deze site op basis van de nieuwste prognoses van uitvoeringsinstantie DUO. In dezelfde periode neemt het aantal klassen in het middelbaar onderwijs met twaalf toe.
- Onderzoek naar veiligheid speenkoorden: kans op stikken in kraaltjes of verwurging
De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) wil meer onderzoek doen naar speenkoorden en de veiligheid daarvan. Sinds januari 2020 heeft de NVWA ruim twintig meldingen van consumenten ontvangen over mogelijk onveilige speenkoorden.
Een speenkoord is bedoeld om aan een speentje vast te maken zodat het kind dit niet zo makkelijk kan verliezen. De koorden zijn vaak gemaakt van kralen met daaraan een clipje dat dan vast wordt gemaakt aan de kleding van het kind.
De twintig meldingen die de NWVA sinds 2020 heeft gekregen over mogelijk onveilige speenkoorden gingen vooral over onderdelen die loskwamen, maar ook over te lange speenkoorden. Jonge kinderen kunnen in beide gevallen stikken. Ofwel door loskomende kraaltjes, ofwel door verstikking van een lang koord. Of dat in deze gevallen ook daadwerkelijk is gebeurd is niet bekend.
