In the 1950s, North American neuropsychologists began intensively investigating the question of how the brain reacts when it is cut off from the barrage of information is usually receives via our sensory organs. Until then, the dominant theory was that such sensory deprivation would have an effect comparable to pulling the plug on an electric lawnmower: the brain would switch to sleep mode. But there was no real proof to back up this theory. That gap in research was destined to be filled first by the Canadian psychologist Donald Hebb.
Together with his student Walter Bexton, Hebb recruited participants for an unusual experiment at McGill University in Montreal. Subjects were offered 20 dollars — a relatively large amount of money at the time — for every day they spent doing absolutely nothing. They were asked to stay in a soundproof room, which was insulated against noise from the outside, but with the constant hum of an air-conditioning unit audible inside.
This meant the subjects were not able to hear the sounds made by their own bodies breathing and swallowing, or the sound of their own hearts beating. They wore goggles with heavily frosted glass, isolating them visually, while very soft furnishings, cotton gloves on their hands, and cardboard tubes on their arms meant their sense of touch was very limited. Apart from this, the experiment did not appear to make great demands on the subjects: do nothing and earn good money while doing it — Hebb had no problem finding enough recruits for his study...
However, those recruits would soon regret their decision. Most aborted the experiment after just two days, and none managed to endure this ‘senseless’ environment for longer than a week. The subjects found the experience simply unbearable.
Soon after the start of the trial, they began to have difficulty concentrating. Their minds would constantly wander, causing them to score abysmally on the cognitive tests they were required to complete periodically. They found themselves bombarded by memories that raged unfiltered and unbridled into their conscious minds.
Many subjects reported hearing voices that were not really there, and some even heard music. Others saw wallpaper patterns or entire scenes, where they encountered dogs or children, or felt they were being shot with pellets. The strangest hallucinations were experienced by one subject, who saw a procession of squirrels in snowshoes with sacks over their shoulders marching across the room. That even trumps the visions of another volunteer, who saw prehistoric monsters walking through a jungle.

P.W. Taylor’s General Goods & Provisions / Buchanan’s Post Office
Main Street, Willow Creek, 1868
1. Exterior | 2-4. General Store  | 5 & 6. Post office public area | 7-9. Postmaster’s Office
A Very Brief History of P.W. Taylor’s / The Post Office
Although a trading post has existed in some form or another on this site for hundreds of years (a story for another time), the General Store owned and operated by the Taylor family has been serving the community of Willow Creek since 1822. Originally billed as Taylor and Son’s Provisions, the son in question was quick to change the store’s name in the wake of his father’s passing in the early 1850s, and it was alleged that dust had to be blown off the “shiny new” signage before it could be hung up. Nevertheless, the painted tin signs of P.W. Taylor’s have flapped in Willow Creek’s balmy breeze ever since. Taylor the younger continued to manage the store capably for a further nine years before the Civil War broke out in April 1861.
P.W. Taylor enlisted for the Confederacy early on into the war, turning management of the store over to his wife, Mrs Cordelia Taylor, while he was “off whupping Yankees”. That way it remained for another half decade, before the Yankees finally whupped P.W. Taylor, and the widowed Mrs Taylor sold the premises in a private transaction in 1865. The store was given fresh wallpaper and paint and split into two, with the new Post Office taking up the majority of the square footage. In 1866, P.W. Taylor’s reopened in a space just a fifth the size of its original store, stuffed to the rafters with product. Mr Hunter Perrin serves as clerk here, while Postmaster Niel Buchanan oversees the adjoining Post Office.
Despite the circumstances around Taylor’s demise being murky, at best, most of Willow Creek’s populace consider P.W. Taylor to be a war hero. This sensitivity has apparently not gone unnoticed by the bustling marketplace’s new owner, who has wisely elected not to change the name.
