Rating the Differences In How People Reacted to Nico Saying He Would Not Be Accepted At Camp.

(Btw not a hater on percico, jasico, or solangelo in this post, this is just fact checking lol)

1. Percy

In Battle of the Labyrinth, Nico is 11 years old and Percy is 15. At the end of the book Nico asks:

“do you really think they’ll ever accept me here?”

Percy says nothing. An indication of - No.

Now a lot of people say that since Percy was only a child it’s not his fault that he didn’t try harder to make him stay, but this doesn’t make much sense.

Percy is a teenage camp counselor meant to teach and protect the younger halfbloods. He even calls himself a leader in the camp. In this book he’s gone overboard with trying to find Nico and feeling a large sense of protectiveness over him but doesn’t have that same energy with wanting him to stay at camp and allows this actual child who is eleven, to leave by himself because in Percy’s own words:

‘Nico would have to find his own dark path.’

I realize Nico didn’t feel welcome and brushed Percy off a bit but honestly If my godly parent didn’t have a cabin I wouldn’t have felt welcome either. Percy should’ve petitioned the whole “maybe we should care about other gods besides the olympians” much sooner.

Rating 3/10 (maybe a 4/10)

2. Jason

The first time Nico insinuates that he is not welcome at the camp, he and Jason are on a balcony. This is after Nico’s forced outing and Jason is feeling different towards Nico than previous chapters. He is more protective and feels like he understands Nico a little more.

Jason says things along the lines of:

“maybe you should take a chance and come out of the shadows, it’s better than hiding.”

Nico gets quiet and very angry at the word.

“hiding?” He whispers.

And Jason gets frightened but stands his ground, even when the floor starts cracking under Nico’s pissed off boots. Nico ends up brushing Jason off and says that he’s made his mind up and for the moment Jason decides to not push further.

Until Blood of Olympus. At the end of this book Nico has already decided to give camp another chance (though I’m not quite sure what the difference is between giving camp another chance in this book vs the last Olympian) but Jason runs up to him, ready to give him all he’s got one last time. Pretty much:

“I know you said your leaving but I’ve got to try one more time-“

“I’m staying”

So this proves Jason was not going to force Nico to stay nor tell him camp wouldn’t accept him. But he was still ready to keep this boy at camp since he felt a connection with him, and cared alot, enough to offer his father food and prayers to help Nico.

He didn’t want to stand by and say nothing, nor did he want to gaslight Nico and make him feel dumb for wanting to leave. He respected Nico a lot here, and didn’t make Nico feel like his past experiences meant absolutely nothing….

Rating 10/10

3. Will

When Nico insinuates to Will Solace that he’s leaving bc he won’t be accepted, this is the very first interaction between the pair in the 8 previous books ever.

At first Will is surprised and then gets very angry. He begins telling Nico angrily that no one had ever pushed him away (incorrect) and that he’d completely pushed himself away (not quite correct).

He says Nico would see people want to be his friend if he ‘got out of his brooding cloud’

To say that to Nico, the most traumatized and lonely character in the books, is a slap in the face to the readers and the character. In my opinion.

He gaslights Nico in such an extreme way without even knowing him that it surprised me that some people thought this was ‘cute’. People have pushed Nico away out of fear and stuff. We know this because we’ve been in their heads. We’ve heard the offhand comments.

Will either knows what people say about him (which makes his statement even more rude and hurtful) or he turns a blind eye and pretends not to (even worse).

Some readers say that he only said this because it was true or that Nico needed to hear it but this is simply not true. Will solace is pretty much saying what Jason was but in the worst way possible.

I would have given this character the benefit of the doubt and say ‘hey, maybe he’s grown to understand Nico more’ but after reading a passage in tsats this year, apparently Will still thinks the exact same thing proving he still doesn’t quite respect or understand Nicos past experiences even by the end of tsats and even though he’s been dating Nico about a year….

I wonder if it’s toxic positivity or something….

extra. Hazel.

I just put her in here because she understands Nicos situation the most. They are both children of the underworld and are treated differently at their camps. Although, Rome doesn’t quite have the gated fence community that camp halfblood does (or did). Rome treats Hazel more of like her own person rather than the child of so and so. Camp halfblood seems to see Nico as just his parentage most of the time. Same for the children of minor gods.

So I was pretty surprised at BOO for having Nico try AGAIN at this camp that doesn’t quite deserve him instead of going with his sister to a place that made him feel a bit more welcome (even if Rome calls children of Hades and Neptune bad luck).

Hazel is kind of out of the loop about Nico wanting to leave but let’s be honest, if Nico had really left Hazel would be the first to run after him and make him stay with her lol.

I do believe Nico should have stayed with his favorite person that he cares about the most instead of a random background character that tends to gaslight a bit and a camp that looks at him differently for things he can’t control.

100/10 bc it’s Hazel~

Bianca, knocks: Knock knock. Can I join you?

Bianca, sits beside him on the bed: You okay?

Bianca: Percy tells me you haven't left your cabin in since yesterday morning.

Nico: ...I just don't feel like going outside.

Bianca: ...ok. Are you lying to me?

Nico: ...promise you wont get mad

Bianca: I promise I won't react until you finish.

Nico: ...That quest...with the Seven. I had to go with Jason to this place to get Diocletian's Scepter. Cupid had it.

Bianca: Cupid? As in the God of Live for Romans?

Nico: Yeah. And we tried. We really did. But he wouldn't give it without anything in return.

Bianca: ...Nico, what did you do?

Nico: He made me say the truth...he made me say that I like Percy.

Bianca:

Nico, crying: Bianca, I like boys.

Bianca: ...*scooches over to him and hugs him tightly*

Nico, crying: I don't know what I'm gonna do. I'm scared.

Bianca: Shh, it's okay, it's okay. We'll figure this out.

Nico: I hate it. I hate this feeling.

Bianca: Nico, calm down. Why don't you tell me how you feel. Maybe we can figure it out

Nico: It's just that... I would get this feeling everytime I remember what happened. Since I realized, and I look at Percy, I feel...

Bianca: You feel what?

Nico: Like, there are these vines that are crawling on my skin and they get tighter and tighter until I can't move or breath. And there's this feeling in my stomach, like it makes me wanna throw up. I don't know how else to say it, I just...I feel so dirty.

Bianca: You're not dirty

Nico: Really?! Bianca, you don't understand! I'm gay! I'm a faggot! I'm not normal!

Bianca: That doesn't mean that you're worthless.

Nico: I just think that maybe I can find a way to make me like girls like other boys do.

Bianca: Hey, you know you don't have to change who you are for the sake of other people. Okay, you like boys, so what? That doesn't change you.

Percy and Nico

Not a full analysis, just some minor points I need to make and my opinion.

Firstly, Percy never suggested leaving Nico for dead. Below is a copy of Mark of Athena. Read Page 139 of this pdf and you'll see, he was conflicted and confused, but he definitely didn't want Nico to die.

Secondly, in Titan's Curse he literally says that he will take on the prophecy to save Nico. Below is another PDF, page 206-207.

Thirdly, during a lot of The Battle of the Labyrinth, Percy was consistently worrying about Nico.

Fourthly, I've got a question. If someone, who may not have known all the details of a deal they made, but was knowingly tricking you into a conversation that would not go well, would you trust them? As yourself that when you talk about Percy choking Nico.

Fifthly, Rick completely butchered Nico and Percy's relationship. Percy never wanted Nico to die and they've known each other longer. He gave Nico and Jason some sort of arc, but I really wonder why he couldn't have smoothed things over with Percy and Nico. I feel that if HOO was rewritten by me or maybe someone with similar opinions, Nico and Percy would adress the problem and not just destroy their relationship completely. I've met so many Percy haters who say they would rewrite HOO so Percy dies or their is a lot of Percy bashing. Some of them even said that Jason should kill Percy in Kansas.

Finally, I think they had an interesting relationship from the start. Percy had just lost his best friend and here was jumpy 10 year old Nico asking so many questions. They meet a again a few months later and Nico is emo and depressed. Another few months and now they are getting back Hades' secret sword in the underworld. More months and that was when Nico "betrays" Percy then helps him. I just feel that if Rick had tried a little harder, they could have had such an interesting dynamic. Also they are the strongest Big Three kids, so technically they would have been a two-person army if Rick wrote it so that their potential platonic,familial relationship was destroyed.

Now, I know Percy was also wrong on many parts, but I've seen/heard worse. Percy was never outright abusive, just that one choke (which could've been dealt with better by Percy). Percy didn't speak up on Nico's behalf, but he did say he didn't want him to die. I'm not going to apologize for everything Percy has done but Nico stans need to look at things from both perspectives and question themselves.

There is literally no hate on either character, just writing. I love Rick's books, but I honestly think he destroyed some character arcs.

After Nico being outed to Jason he finally starts noticing him in a way.

He thought of Jason like Percy but a little more uptight. And not a I’m stuck up way but in a tense way.

Then he realizes Jason always is the one to take shifts on night watch and is awake at all time in case someone needs something.

Like once he wanted to go on deck because he just woke up from a horrible nightmare and there’s Jason.

Sitting on the ledge, blond hair reflecting in the moonlight, a backpack by his side where Nico can see all the books in folders, and he’s working on paperwork.

He sees Nico in view.

They make short small talk and Jason somehow can tell that he must’ve woken up from a nightmare.

‘That’s usually why Percy comes down here too.’

Nico wants to leave after that comment but then he thinks about it. He thinks about Jason sticking around for everyone. Including him.

‘Don’t go trying to make me talk, Grace. I don’t do talking.’

‘Or touch. I know. If you want to sit then sit. If you want to cut my tongue so there’s no opportunity, then feel free.”

Something sparks in Nicos chest. So he sits. Jason shoves his bag over to him.

‘There’s books in there in case you get bored waiting for real action.’

‘There’s Romeo and Juliet in here.’

‘Thy not a fan of, oh fair Verona?’

Nico stifles a laugh and smiles slightly at Jason, who hasn’t looked up since he arrived.

They sit in silence up until it’s 6 a.m and they’re pretty sure someone else will be up in a while. Nico bids him a goodbye before going back to his room.

Nico thinks maybe he can see himself on the deck more often.

You know that you who are in the fandom can hate jason grace, you can hate the ship with nico but : They can do what they want and the truth is they can't deny that jason is important a part of nico, however they interpret it. Nico loves jason and jason was his friend until his last moment and forever. Nico has few people on his side and the most precious he conquered jason is there. The fandom makes a non-existent rivalry in relation to Will for some comments that do not come down to anything, not jason, not a jasico ship, not will and not anyone. That's all i'm saying is that jason and nico are friends, they're love, soulmates and that's more than proven in canon. Will is the person who loves and protects nico, is the couple canon ship, they two are a couple under all circumstances does not diminish or increase the importance of jason to nico or will to nico. I'm tired of people mischaracterizing jason, making fun and hate of his friendship with nico or for ship between the two. Making up lies about Will,Nico and Jason all to make a truce ridiculous. this is all ridiculous, that they distort and do this about one another to invalidate what they want and what they don't accept.

So I end here by saying a canonical part of the books regarding jason and nico:

I'm staying. Nico said

Jason blinked - What ?

At Camp Half-Blood. The hades cabin needs a head counsellor. Have you seen the decor? It's disgusting. I'll Have to renovate.and someone needs to do the burial rites properly,since demigods insist on dying heroically.

That's- that's fantastic! Dude! Jason opened his arms for a hug, then froze. Right. No touching. Sorry.

Nico grunted. I suppose we can make an exception.

Jason squeezed him so hard Nico thought his ribs would crack.

I FOUND AN ARTIST WILLING TO DO MY ALTERNATE CONCEPT STORY OF TSATS.

Which is basically just another story entirely.

I made a post a couple days ago about how much I was disappointed in The Sun and The Star (like the plot and everything) so I just typed out an alternate concept of the story entirely in like ten minutes.

A lot of people seemed to like the idea of it being Hazel that goes with Nico and the Bob thing being a misdirect. So I went searching to see if I could find an artist on instagram AND BITCH I FOUND ONE ACTUALLY WILLING.

At first I messaged a bunch of more popular artists but didn’t get a response. So I drifted around for HOURS messaging newer smaller creators. Until I found a webtoon artist willing to draw it. I had to type out my concept again and send it to them and apparently they liked it.

THEY SENT ME THIS AN HOUR AGO AND CALLED THEM ‘ROUGH SKETCHES’

I KNOW BITCH. Jason looks INSANE. I’m crying again. In a good way this time. They are apparently a pjo fan but said they hadn’t read the toa series or tsats, but that they have always loved hazel and Nico and said they were the reason they agreed lol.
