Retread - Chapter 10
Nick has made it to safety, once again by the skin of his teeth. What happens after is healing and isolation. Machinations are put in place that confirm, yet again, that they never should have crossed that bridge in New Orleans.

“Don’t you think you’re a little old to be trick-or-treating, Ellis?”
“Ain’t no such thing, Nick! Anyway, didn’t you say you were gonna dress up too?”
“This is my costume.”
“Yer almost shirtless an’ you got Wolverine claws. That ain’t a costume.”
"Didn't you drag me to that stupid movie when they rereleased it after the end of the world?"
“You just got jeans and a tank top. That ain’t a costume, even if y’do add Wolverine claws to it!”
“Yeah, whatever. Anyway, what do you think the neighbors are going to say when they see a zombie Ghostbuster knocking on their door? The Flu wasn’t that long ago, hick.”
“Feels weird wearin’ the makeup and contacts.”
"Yeah, and you'll be lucky if a gun in your face is all you get."

Frank once had to beg for resources just to paint the house and Bill was reluctant because he didn’t understand it.
At the end of their lives, we see Frank’s paintings everywhere, all over their house and town. Which means that he not only was able to get Bill to see the importance of maintaining art and beauty, but that Bill went out of his way to make sure Frank always had paint on hand.
That just goes to show the strength of their love and Bill’s character development. One of the most romantic queer media pieces I’ve ever watched. Beautiful, gutting, perfect.

Something I really love about The Last Of Us are these subtle little moments that showcase the real intelligence required for survival.
Bill wearing his hat in the dark during that shootout to keep the rainwater out of his eyes.
Bill didn't get shot because he was standing out in the open. The flamethrowers would have been too bright for the gunmen to see him. He was shot because he gave away his position when he yelled.
Joel seeing the bleach on top of the refrigerator, which is what made him think to look in the fridge for battery components.
Tess's skill with social engineering warranting an entire post of its own.
Ellie noticing Joel's hearing being shot on his right.
Honestly basically everything Bill did.
Like, they earned it, and you can see it in so many little moments.
Then you have Frank, who fell in a hole, and won the apocalypse. And I respect this dichotomy SO MUCH.

I can’t claim this “The Last of Us” analysis, but I wanted to share it here because it’s a fascinating thought:
Bill in the game was a cautionary tale. He was a model for what Joel should avoid becoming, which was a closed-off, selfish loner who managed to push away the person he cared about the most.
Bill in the show is Joel’s inspiration/model. He is the one who puts into Joel’s head that he needs to stop being a closed-off, selfish loner and that he must do whatever it takes to save the person he cares about the most.
And what’s cool about this is that, even though both Bills are different, they both served the same purpose regarding Joel’s character.

Status of ao3 account
As of today I’ve locked all of the works on my ao3 account to registered users only. I don’t agree with the AI sweep that’s happening, I don’t condone it, and while I’m sure it would only pertain to my more popular fics, I’m not taking any chances. I’m hoping this will discourage the stealing and re-posting of my fics, also, but we’ll see. This is also an attempt against plagiarism since several of my works have been plagiarized before.
Thank you for understanding. I’ve heard that people are able to get invites rather quickly, but if anybody who reads my fic needs one I have five (5) that I can give.
Maybe one day I’ll be able to unlock these stories, but we’ll have to see what else the future holds.

He walked into my office, bringing a fog of desperation thicker than the smoke from my cigarette. He was the kind of guy you'd pay no attention to on the street. Young, inconspicuous. Yet something about him drew my full attention. Maybe it was the glint of his eyes, or maybe it was the fullness of his lips. Lips which belonged on a pretty dame with legs for days, not a handsome young man with eyes as blue as the morning sky.
He called himself Ellis. I called him trouble.
His friend had gotten himself mixed up in the moonshine business, and he hadn't heard back in a couple days. I wanted no part of it, but I couldn't say no to those baby-blues. But I guess that's how all these cases start. Pretty eyes that make you do things you never thought you would.
