Hope is something you learn

Here's the thing: I'm not a naturally hopeful person.

I'm not running a good news blog because I've always naturally gravitated toward good news. I'm not running a blog titled "reasons for hope" because hope is something that comes easily to me

It's actually the complete opposite. Teenage me was a giant cynic and a sarcastic pessimist and probably regarded as a killjoy, tbh. Picture a young, bespectacled, well-informed raincloud, maybe, idk. I could find a negative point to undermine just about anything

Nowadays, I'm one of the most hopeful people I know when it comes to the future - especially among people who actually follow the news

So, if you're feeling hopeless or depressed or anxious or despairing - or all and more - about the state of the world, and you're tired of feeling that way, I want you to know that you absolutely do not have to be a naturally hopeful or optimistic person in order to find hope

I got here because I struggled and clawed my way to hope, deliberately, because I needed it desperately. And the start of that path was bookmarking good news websites and checking them every day - which is why I built this blog

Here's the thing: the news, social media, and the human brain itself are all very biased toward negativity. The human brain is wired this way to help us survive things like tiger attacks - and since people are biased toward negative information, they click on it more, so negativity generates way more clicks and makes way more money.

It's a sucky, vicious cycle. But it doesn't accurately reflect reality - that's the whole point of bias.

It's actually kinda irritating that it's true, imho, but your focus really does determine (a lot of) your reality

If you want to have hope, sometimes you need to build it yourself. Even when it's so hard you don't know if you ever can. And then you need to keep building it, because the world isn't static and neither does your brain. Hope needs maintenance, just like everything else

So it's lucky, then, that human beings and the world are both generally better than we think - and certainly better than news or social media is willing to tell us

Those perennial news reports of "The dangers of a sedentary lifestyle" really hit different...

...When you're a full-time wheelchair user.

Like: thanks. But what am I supposed to do with the advice to take a five-minute walk every half hour?

In my head I know there are probably other exercises I could substitute for that -- like arm stretches and reverse sit ups.

But after a while, the consistent assumption that walking is the "simplest" and "lowest impact" exercise available to "everyone" just becomes a reminder of how invisible I am, culturally speaking.

Seeing the difference in coverage (news media vs social media) on the Feb 3rd train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, USA on and all the issues caused by the incident, I want to see something;

The incident summed up (and there may be even more I missed):

train carrying 150 cars, twenty of which contained hazardous materials, derailed due a failure of a wheel bearing, due to poor inspection because inspections were cut from 3 minutes per train to 90 secs per train. (Remember the railroad strike? Yeah. Part of what they wanted, in addition to better conditions, was more time to inspect trains and to get faulty parts fixed. They were refused, and now we're here.)

the derailment (of 50 cars) caused a fire which threatened to make a car(s) with the vinyl chloride explode, so a controlled release (burn) of the vinyl chloride (toxic, flammable gas) was done to prevent this

residents within a 1 mile radius were evacuated beforehand

the event resulted in contamination of the air/water and mass deaths of animals like fish and chickens

residents were told it's safe to return home a week after the evacuation, and found their pets dead; water smells wrong; air smells and/or burns their eyes

People miles away are having the same issues with animals dying (schools of dead fish in water, livestock sick/dying) and water contamination

The chemicals are contaminating the Ohio River Basin (which is more than just the Ohio River, and effects/includes KY, WV, TN, IN, OH, and parts of IL, PA, VA, and NC) and could potentially also lead to the whole Mississippi River Watershed being contaminated. (that's like, 40% of the continental United States and starts to touch into Canada.)

Many think the Railroad company (and the government, because they sided with the railroad company in ending the strike) are trying to cover this up in the news as much as possible, and that most coverage is coming from social media (specifically TikTok) and I want to see just how true that is.

I'm not not kidding when I say I have people IRL, who do keep up with the news, who never heard about the derailment at all until I told them just a couple days ago. It doesn't look good.

Democracy suffers when a commercial media system showcases fascist demagogues for profit.

There is no bottom for MAGA’s top man. At a speech delivered on Veterans Day, Donald Trump used rhetoric nearly identical to that used by Adolf Hitler 80 years earlier.

Rather than honoring veterans as one might expect of a political speech on this day, Trump used the occasion to label his adversaries “vermin” — promising that, if elected, he would use his power to “root out” all his political enemies.

The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake found the parallels: Hitler frequently used vermin references to justify the murder of Jews and others across Europe, while “Trump has used it more broadly to suggest that his opponents are subhuman” and deserve punishment.

Without calling themselves to account for the damage they've done, media executives will never quit their Trump habit

Parroting Hitler should not be considered normal behavior in any election cycle. But the media have grown used to covering Trump’s extremism as if it’s standard political fare. This time, though, some journalists rightly saw his Veterans Day speech as very dangerous.

“It’s important to emphasize that Trump’s rhetorical excesses are not new. To know anything about the Republican is to know that he, on a nearly daily basis, finds new and needlessly provocative ways to shock, offend, insult, and degrade,” wrote Steve Benen for MSNBC.

What is new, however, is the growing number of reporters and commentators being more explicit in their use of the term “fascist” to describe Trump’s beliefs — and “dictatorship” to describe what his return to power would represent for the future of U.S. democracy.

The media aren’t sounding these sorts of alarms enough, according to Margaret Sullivan, who wrote about the mounting evidence that Trump is indeed a fascist. “The press generally is not doing an adequate job of communicating those realities,” she said. “Instead, journalists have emphasized Joe Biden’s age and Trump’s ‘freewheeling’ style. They blame the public’s attitudes on ‘polarization,’ as if they themselves have no role.”

Sullivan urges more members of the press to report on the dark prospect of a second Trump presidency. They should “ask voters directly whether they are comfortable with [Trump’s] plans, and report on that. Display these stories prominently, and then do it again soon,” she wrote.

The ‘F’ word

Sullivan is right, of course. The media need to report more on the rise of fascism in America, and they also need to reflect on their role in enabling this. For decades the former president has capitalized on the media’s obsessive attention to paint an alternative vision of himself — one in which he features not as a twice-impeached, criminally indicted sexual abuser who sought to overthrow a democratic election that he lost, but as a decisive and winning strongman, the only person with the power and charisma to make America great again.

Media execs have played along with Trump’s charade, aware that his tele-presence is a boon for ratings and revenues. In 2016, then-CBS CEO Les Moonves said that devoting so much airtime to then-candidate Trump “may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS.” At the time, Moonves was praising Trump for the bumper crop of political-ad dollars brought in during the contentious 2016 election, but he was not alone.

Former media executive Jeff Zucker has arguably done more than any single person to burnish the 21st-century caricature of Donald Trump. While an executive at NBC, he greenlit The Apprentice, which remade Trump from a bankruptcy-spawning loser into a boardroom genius with impeccable business savvy.

When Trump entered the political fray in 2015, he did so with an Apprentice tailwind. Zucker, who by then had transitioned to the top job at CNN, trained the network’s cameras on his celebrity candidate while denying equal time to Trump’s Republican opponents. Ratings were also Zucker’s rationale for keeping Trump center stage in 2016.

The media chose Trump in 2016 well before most Republican voters had a chance to vote for any of the other GOP candidates in the race.

And it didn’t end there. In 2020, Mathias Döpfner, head of German media giant Axel Springer, sent a message asking the company’s executives if they wanted to “get together for an hour on the morning on Nov. 3 and pray that Donald Trump will again become President of the United States of America?” Döpfner justified this question by praising the Trump administration for supporting issues, like corporate tax breaks and reining in big tech, that benefitted Axel Springer.

The profit incentive

If you’re noticing a pattern, it's this: Democracy suffers when a commercial media system showcases fascist demagogues for profit.

That seems obvious enough, but it’s worth repeating: News media companies rely on ratings and related advertising revenues to survive. In other words, the news business is about putting on a show that will draw the largest numbers of viewers. And Trump — like Hitler and Mussolini before him — is a camera-ready showman.

More important matters like correcting Trump’s many falsehoods or reporting on the troubling consequences of a second Trump presidency are secondary for those who just want to draw more attention to their primetime offerings.

Former executives, like Moonves and Zucker (who for a variety of unsavory reasons have since left their companies), and existing ones, like Döpfner, were saying that as long as Trump’s autocratic extremism makes them richer, there’s no need to worry about the consequences. Never mind that, if elected, he’d likely use his power to undermine media freedom and silence dissenting voices.

The commercial U.S. media system needs to undergo deep reckoning for accommodating the rise of Trumpism. This atonement should be reflected in a shift in the ways large outlets report on Trump, but also by recognizing the commercial incentives that drive media to lead with the Trump Show, damn the far-right repercussions.

Without calling themselves to account for the damage they've done, media executives will never quit their Trump habit — not in 2024, nor at any point after.

i found this article and now im wondering, how are we supposed to trust any of these western news sites now and in the future?

i live in a country where the news has been crucial in exposing governmental corruption, human rights violations, child exploitation, and even assassinations. i have seen how journalism has shaped movements, uplifted the voiceless, and informed the public on issues that impact them and their lives. i know journalists who put their personal safety on the line to let the world know the stories that should be told. good journalism is beautiful and life-changing.

the way that these western news sites have spread proven falsehoods has put a stain on the profession. they are a disgrace to actual journalists around the world, especially to those on the ground in Palestine - the very same journalists who are being killed by the bombs that the western news tries to justify.

am i saying that news agencies in other parts of the world are free from flaws? heck no! in fact, i highly suggest you research who actually owns the news in your country and other places in your region or have a look at the 2023 World Press Index and see where each country lies. if you're not sure what I mean by "who actually owns the news" i suggest watching John Oliver's video of the Sinclair Broadcast Group where he breaks down how a corporation can impact news coverage.

it is how the western media was so ready to spin the narrative in Israel's favour and openly support lies like "the 40 beheaded babies" without any evidence or fact-checking that is so appalling.

those lies have detrimental effects. it has played a role in the manufacturing of consent for genocide and lets people justify the further atrocities committed against the Palestinian people by the Israeli government.

journalists have a duty to speak the truth and be the voice of the people - not to be mouthpieces of the powerful.

i believe that there are many journalists in western media who are frustrated that they cannot speak the truth and my heart goes out to them. i cannot imagine being in their position. i admire the journalists who stood up for the truth even though they likely got fired or reprimanded for it.

you might say that maybe their hands are tied and they can't report the news in an objective and fair manner because of the people up top. and that comes back to my initial argument, how can i know to trust them in the future? it feels like a betrayal to the people.

these news sites need to be held accountable. in my opinion, there needs to be an overhaul in industry on a global level with proper transparency and checks and balances, we cannot continue to accept and live like this.

The news media notoriously engages in bothsiderism. Biden's verbal stumbles are bizarrely equated with Trump's unhinged racist and dictatorial rantings.

But even if you ignore the vile and incendiary stuff Trump says, he still beats any other president for incomprehension – including George W. Bush.

^^^ I will concede that this particular statement is at least accurate – unlike 30,000+ false assertions he made during his term. Of course Trump helped speed up those deaths by doing nothing for seven weeks from late January to early March of 2020 as the COVID-19 virus was insidiously spreading throughout the United States.

And it's about Greta Thunberg again. I think she's a good example as she is an international figure and the news about her can be compared and contrasted.

So you all saw the video where some dude took away Thunbers's mic when she was speaking on behalf of the palestinian people. He said he was here for a climate protest, not for politics. Irony is dead.

Now, what was the reaction to this on the German left?

Volksverpetzer is a non-profit whose bread and butter is debunking covid conspiracies. They don't call themselves explicitly political, but their dedication to the truth and to rigorous research automatically places them on the left. Also they sell merch saying "FCK NZS" (Fuck Nazis) and "Lebe jeden Tag so, dass die AfD was dagegen hätte" (Live every day in a way alt-right party AfD would hate). They are based, as the kids say. I donated to them in the past.

Now they say the climate movement should get rid of Thunberg for her "antisemitism".

The text says "take away Greta's mic"

Wearing a kufiya, which until 5 minutes ago was just a normal fashion item in Germany worn and sold everywhere, is antisemitic apparently. Saying "No climate justice on occupied land" is "glorification of Hamas terror".

This view is shared in every news outlet, from the alt-right Welt to the public broadcast Tagesschau to the oh so radical taz.

Politicians are calling for her to be removed. There is no difference between critique of Israel and Antisemitism and not a word about how popular the pro-palestinian position is worldwide.

This is a microcosm of what I see everywhere. I'm just some person, I don't know how to research or analyze this. But I am active in both English and German speaking internet discourse and the difference is driving me insane.

It's not that our leaders and main stream media aren't staunchly zionist, of course they are. But as far as I can see, the anti-zionist, pro-palestinian opinion exists in your news coverage. There is a discussion happening in the wider public. Piers fucking Morgan had Bassem Youssef on multiple times.

Here it's as if questioning Israel is such a fringe and obviously stupid opionion that it does not have to be taken seriously. No normal person would think that.

It's kinda similar to how we talked about Neo-Nazis until a few years ago. They exist, they have opinions and symbols and stuff, but they are so obviously evil that none of their talking points are worth debunking in polite society.

Germans calling themselves antifa are supporting Israel as if it's the most normal thing in the world. This is a different reality.

The journalist Tucker Carlson's recent criticism of the mainstream news media (a critique echoed by many of us for years) is not a criticism of its partiality, its ideology or its punditry. It's a criticism of the fact that it presents that ideology and punditry as if it were neutrality. That is what we are referring to when we describe it as deceptive . If you want to be ideologically biased that is perfectly fine, just own up to it. This blog is ideologically biased: thus its title.
