Translations of Siamanto's The Dance into English and Spanish
The Dance by Siamanto (Atom Yarjanian 1878-1915). In a field of cinders where Armenian life was still dying, a German woman, trying not to cry told me the horror she witnessed:
"This thing I'm telling you about, I saw with my own eyes, Behind my window of hell I clenched my teeth and watched the town of Bardez turn into a heap of ashes. The corpses were piled high as trees, and from the springs, from the streams and the road, the blood was a stubborn murmur, and still calls revenge in my ear. Don't be afraid; I must tell you what I saw. so people will understand the crimes men do to men. For two days, by the road to the graveyard … Let the hearts of the world understand, It was Sunday morning, the first useless Sunday dawning on the corpses. From dawn to dusk I had been in my room with a stabbed woman — my tears wetting her death — when I heard from afar a dark crowd standing in a vineyard lashing twenty brides and singing filthy songs. Leaving the half-dead girl on the straw mattress, I went to the balcony of my window and the crowd seemed to thicken like a clump of trees An animal of a man shouted, "You must dance, dance when our drum beats." With fury whips cracked on the flesh of these women. Hand in hand the brides began their circle dance. Now, I envied my wounded neighbor because with a calm snore she cursed the universe and gave up her soul to the stars … "Dance," they raved, "dance till you die, infidel beauties With your flapping tits, dance! Smile for us. You're abandoned now, you're naked slaves, so dance like a bunch of fuckin' sluts. We're hot for your dead bodies." Twenty graceful brides collapsed. "Get up," the crowed screamed, brandishing their swords. Then someone brought a jug of kerosene. Human justice, I spit in your face. The brides were anointed. "Dance," they thundered — "here's a fragrance you can't get in Arabia." With a torch, they set the naked brides on fire. And the charred bodies rolled and tumbled to their deaths … I slammed my shutters, sat down next to my dead girl and asked: "How can I dig out my eyes?" WATERTOWN—The Armenian Museum of America in Watertown, MA, has launched its fourth online program called the Sound Archive, which is featured on its website and social media pages every month. The debut offering presents the full catalog of Mardiros Der Sarkis Tashjian and his brothers for the first time and is considered to be the earliest known Armenian sound recordings produced in the United States in the early 20th century.
To kick off the launch of the Sound Archive, the Armenian Museum is hosting its first-ever webinar with music researcher and collector Harout Arakelian on Thursday, April 1 at 4:30 p.m. This online Zoom event is free and registration is required via Eventbrite.
The content of the Sound Archive is supplemented with vintage images from the collection of Project SAVE Armenian Photograph Archives, and their archivists have worked closely with volunteers from the Armenian Museum to create this original multi-media content.
“The music collection of the Armenian Museum is extensive, comprising of more than 3,000 records donated by members over the past 50 years,” noted Executive Director Jason Sohigian. “Volunteer Jesse Kenas-Collins has been digitizing and cleaning up the sound on these old recordings, some of which date back to the beginning of Armenian music in America. We are excited to preview this work online in an event with Harout Arakelian.”
Arakelian worked with Kenas-Collins, Harry Kezelian, and other researchers to document the stories behind some of these recordings, and the Museum has begun posting these online, starting with the Tashjian Brothers. Arakelian will present some of this material during the webinar, including songs that have been restored. Some of the artists will include the Tashjian Brothers, Karekin Proodian, Armenag Shah-Mouradian, Torcom Bezazian, and Nevart Dzeron Koshkarian.
“Harout has done similar events live at Abril Bookstore in Glendale,” added Sohigian, “and these were hugely popular. So we are excited to host this public event on Zoom. We are sure it will be of interest for our members, fans of Armenian music, and collectors who have taken a renewed interest in these early recordings that were being lost to time.”
“This introduction to the first Armenian recordings in America will highlight music in the Armenian Museum’s holdings and I will use the Tashjian story as the vehicle to discuss other musicians and recordings of the 1910s,” explained Arakelian. “All audio files to be played will be from the Armenian Museum of America’s archive, and we will explore these long-forgotten tunes and hear stories about the creators of culture.”
Like most cultural institutions, the Armenian Museum quickly made the shift to virtual programming such as this over the past year. While galleries had to remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, members and families began participating in online events.
These programs have been growing at the Armenian Museum and now include an Online Concert Series sponsored by the Dadourian Foundation and a monthly Virtual Exhibition highlighting objects from its collection. In addition to the new Sound Archive, the Museum has been featuring a weekly ‘’Show and Tell’’ video hosted by Curator Gary Lind-Sinanian, where he shares informative and often amusing stories about objects in the collection. This popular video series is sponsored by Michele Kolligian, President of the Museum’s Board of Trustees.
“Since we have not been able to open the Museum galleries to the public, or present live events such as lectures, book talks, and concerts, our team has done a wonderful job curating virtual offerings to keep people connected during the time the Museum has been closed,” concluded Sohigian. “While we look forward to reopening in the second half of the year, we will continue posting online content so our members across the country and internationally can remain engaged and enjoy learning about our vast collection, and beyond.”

De nos jours, avec le rallongement de la vie, nous prenons cela pour acquis. Mais les jeunes retraités, au milieu de leurs nouvelles activités, estiment-ils, à leur juste valeur, le privilège d’être grands-parents et les responsabilités qui lui sont attenantes ?
Nous avons, dans la Bible, deux exemples de grands-mères qui ont joué un rôle primordial dans la vie de leur petit-fils :
Noémi éleva Obed,  qui devint plus tard le grand-père du roi David, un « homme selon le cœur de Dieu » Ruth 4. 16.
Loïs, avec sa fille, a transmis la foi à Timothée, le compagnon inséparable de l’apôtre Paul.
« Je garde le souvenir de ta foi sincère, cette foi qui se trouvait déjà chez ta grand-mère Loïs et ta mère Eunice. A présent, elle habite aussi en toi. »2 Timothée 1. 5
Personnellement j’ai été marquée par ma grand-mère Nevarte. Elle avait fui le génocide arménien de 1915. Elle fut touchée par la grâce à l’orphelinat.
Malgré son enfance traumatisante, elle avait toujours les yeux pétillants de joie et une affection débordante. Elle aurait pu devenir amère, égoïste, mais sa maison était ouverte à tous et sa table pleine des bonnes spécialités de son peuple.
Sa foi en Dieu était le carburant de sa joie. Je la revois assise à la table de la cuisine, la Bible ouverte et son âme en prière. Mon père a hérité de sa foi et moi j’ai hérité de celle de ma grand-mère et de mon père.
Sans le savoir, elle faisait de moi une disciple de Jésus. A mon tour, après avoir élevé nos six enfants, je prends très au sérieux mon ministère de grand-mère : lire des histoires, jouer au tracteur, aux playmobils mais aussi parler de Jésus, des « signes miraculeux » qu’il a opéré dans notre famille…
La retraite ce n’est pas seulement les mots croisés, le club de country ou les films sur M6 ! Le Seigneur nous appelle en mission. En fait, il s’agit de trans-mission. La transmission de la foi. Finalement, cet appel s’adresse à tous.
