TIL director Terry Gilliam and/or his set designers blatantly and directly copied a graphite drawing called “Neomechanical Tower (Upper) Chamber” by artist and architect Lebbeus Woods without permission, for use in the scenes in the film where James Cole (Bruce Willis) is interrogated by scientists in the future. Woods sued Universal to block the release of the movie or have the scenes removed. Universal agreed to an undisclosed (although rumored to be high 6-figure) settlement sum and the set designs were left as-is for the film's release.

Days turned into weeks into months. I seemed no closer to understanding her than I did in the beginning. The only thing I knew for certain is that I would. Eventually I would figure it out. Even as the campfire lit landscapes passed, I knew that there had to be a pattern. I just wasn’t seeing it. Yet.

If my grandmother knew the stone was missing, she didn’t let on about it. I was as much entranced in my own world as she was in hers. I took advantage of the situation by rising early to take Estora with me on long trips. There I could delve her secrets, which she laid out for me in graphic detail.

If I had been older I might have grasped her honeycomb structure with ease. Unfortunately, I was just a dumb kid who couldn’t tell left from right - it took every bit of brainpower to regurgitate humdrum quadratic equations that make most children dyslexic. I needed a blanket smear of statistical analysis. Or even rudimentary probability. Fortunately I had was pen and paper.

Estora’s emotion-driven language was deceptive on the surface. Each scene she displayed evoked a response inside of me which I had no control over. She chose from one of six possible scenes which were then paired with one of six emotional categories: happiness, anger, surprise, disgust, fear and sadness. Each choice thus led to one of 36 possible outcomes. This set changed based on the pairing of two actors, one which didn’t change which I determined had to be female and one that did which was decidedly male. Each actor brought three sets of outcomes thus a single emotional event would derive from a total of 216 outcomes.

Oh if it were that simple.

Many of the emotional events were modified by outside actors. These externals influenced the outcome of events dependent on their relative skill and/or proximity to the original actors - this dalted effect came about unexpectedly in no neomechanical terms.

These things are tricky to write about for a general audience, but I think I’m still pretty happy with the way I’ve described Estora so far for all things considered. But if you’re one of those people who claims to believe in aliens and then goes on to say that aliens could never leave behind a tamagotchi, then I don’t expect you to give a shit about a salty potato. And I certainly don’t expect a scientifically illiterate person to feel responsible either. You would have to come up with something better. hurp durp deal.

「香港已經冇左工業好耐啦！」香港好像真的窮得只剩下金融及服務業，但其實仍然有人在行業內默默耕耘，而且更做出成績來。57 歲的高滿鍇 （Stanley）廿年前開始投資工業技術，改良發動機，原本為電影導演的他後來更拜師入行，成為行業中的一員。他的「師父」今年已屆八十高齡，但對研發工業技術仍然充滿熱情，研究多年的「超高壓動態密封技術」最近更獲得「亞洲育成中心國際大獎」。

改善機械操作效率 技術推展全球

製造業內有不少大型機械都會有發動機，而所有會動的機械用得耐都會有磨損的情況，繼而出現滲漏，長遠會影響其穩定性及效率。因此他們希望透過技術減輕以上情況，並用了近 8 年的時間，研究出「超高壓動態密封技術」，更獲得多項���利。技術的應用層面非常廣泛，除了工業用大型機械，也適用於汽車、船、高壓泵及液壓機器等。

Stanley 稱此項技術的測試已到尾聲，並已經與代理商合作，預期明年便可��出到大陸及國際上的製造企業，應用到大型機械上。他對這項技術充滿信心，更認為推出後會有顯著的需求增長，因為這項技術真正提升到機械運作，而且行業中的一傳十、十傳百效果反應很快，他倒是擔心自己的團隊太小，到時候會應接不暇，而且自己也快到退休年齡，所以要設法盡快壯大團隊。

社會對工業有偏見 科技園助解困

在香港搞這些工業技術而且能夠成功的例子不多，Stanley 也坦言初期做工業技術的時候，很多人質疑他的工作，更認為香港怎會有人做這些，難以相信他們埋頭苦幹可以做些甚麼出來。他說幸好後來進駐香港科技園，參加科技創業培育計劃，「入左去就好像得到認可，科技園給了我們很多支持。」無論是學術機構、合作公司、客戶還是投資者，都因為他們是香港科技園的一員而更有信心。

社會因為不了解或對工業的定型會對他們有偏見，導致很多人以為政府在這方面的工作不足，但 Stanley 卻對政府的支持給予肯定。「以前不知道有這些計劃及支持項目的時候，的確有很多困惑，但其實政府也撥了不少資源協助發展，只是由於體制方面的問題令資訊散播不全面。」當問及他們要壯大團隊時會否因為香港的學校不太重視這些學科，而導致有招聘困難時，Stanley 則表示工業技術行業不同現時流行的網絡科創企業，需要的人才要有多年經驗，所以門檻本來就很高，不全是學術機構的問題。他也不忘大讚香港的後生仔有衝勁，看到科技園內有不少團隊能夠在年輕的時候創一番事業，認為長遠來說對香港也是好的。
