The Cost of Skin

When the negropean treats me like a nigger, I invoke the Holy Spirit. With grit I transmit, y’all ain’t fit for the truth I submit.

I’m that gumbo that been on the stove for 35 years, I don’t know if y’all gut can handle my girth— I am salted dirt. I was born to subvert.

Anyone gatekeeping the master’s illusory property can facilitate a micro-aggressive experience:

I am seated at a “fancy” cafe by Columbus Circle. I patiently await being asked for my order. I then took the initiative and asked one of the two African servers for a decaf almond latte. After making my order known, the fellow African waitress walked past me about four more times as I was seated outdoors by the entrance. After an unusually long wait, a Latina waitress approaches me in confusion, asking, “You haven’t been served yet?” I act just as confused. Within three minutes, she returns with my order, apologizes on behalf of her coworkers, offers me a free pastry, and says my coffee is complimentary. We both held space, using very sparse words to acknowledge the trite white supremacy I had just endured. I offered her a $20 note, but she refused. And I insisted.

While seated in the Lincoln Center, I asked an employee if I could move a chair. She said, “Sure.” I then run into an elder whom I see often at public events. I suggest we join chairs and catch up. In a perverse turn of events, a Black male janitor walks up on me and essentially tells me I have to get up, as I cannot move the seat, and, without making eye contact, he motions to have me physically move. This man spoke to me like one of his baby mothers who he smacks and doesn’t get pistol-whipped by. The white audience seemed unfazed, and the white female employee whose permission I had requested didn’t make eye contact, either.

In these two experiences, both over the past year, I have been micro-aggressed by people who share my complexion and, presumably, socioeconomic status and who guard the interests of these white-centric spaces.

How do you protect Massa for 40 hours a week and then go home and not be an embellished coon who rolls derisive racial hatred in a blunt and sips the cognac of white likability?

There’s a New Black; in the soles of their shoes, you’ll find the prints of a megalomaniac.
