Decided to make my own LOZ Linkverse AU! Let's call it Chained Timelines for now
Bios Below!
Traveler (The Legend of Zelda NES, Battle of Mirage Castle, The Adventure of Link)
Grew up homeless after losing his parents at a young age
Now lives in Rauru Town, in a house paid for by the Princess
Sopping wet cat /pos
Generally quiet and reserved
Also very modest, to the point of having very little self-confidence
If you ask him, he'll say it's a miracle he made it out of his adventures alive
Wilderness survival expert of the group
His semi-advanced combat ability is due to suffering frequent monster attacks
Somehow really proficient in magic
The only Link with two Zeldas; he’s best friends and adventure partners with one, and the other one has a crush on him that he does not reciprocate
Legend (A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening)
Grew up near Hyrule Castle, raised by his Uncle
Returned home after Awakening to take a break from adventure
Puts on a tough face, but has a lot of depression and anxiety to deal with
Destroying an entire civilization will do that to you
Often tries to severely downplay how he's feeling (it doesn't work)
Is frankly very tired of being “the hero”
A reliable warrior all the same, and will go to any length to defend what he truly cares about
Not looking for love, too many bad memories of his last crush
Great work friends with his Zelda, but nothing more
Sometimes turns into a rabbit, and hates it so much
Arts mistook him for his Gramps at first
Time (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask)
Grew up in the Lost Woods as a Kokiri
Now lives as a wanderer, searching for Navi and protecting the weak
Trauma baby :(
One of the most experienced Links despite looking to be around 10 years old
Wiser and more mature than people 5 times his age
A bit of a no-nonsense warrior, his emotions hardened by trauma
Very blunt and brutally honest
The “leader” of the group
He does not like when people treat him like a kid
Looks fondly on his descendants, proud that his legacy could inspire future generations
Not super close with his Zelda, but their relationship has grown in recent years when Zelda started having prophetic dreams of the future timeline
Helps his Zelda as they struggle with their gender identity
Has a crush on Malon, but won't admit it
Oddly one of the better therapists out of the group, despite (or perhaps because of) his own trauma
Fairies are one of the only things that can cheer him up
Does he sleep, like ever???
Essence (Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages)
Grew up in the capital of a Hyrule well connected to other kingdoms
Returned home to finish his schooling
A bit of a world traveler, has souvenirs from five different kingdoms
Is something of a trickster underdog, pretty good at preparing plans on the fly
Has way too much self-confidence for his own good
“Oh, they'll be fine! After all, I'm going with them!”
Sometimes charges recklessly into combat and gets himself hurt
Often annoys his Zelda, but they do love each other romantically
Has a lot of rings that all have different magic spells
Can identify the exact type of any tree seed given to him
Can play nine different instruments
Has three animal mounts and none of them are horses
Four (Four Swords)
Grew up alone on the outskirts of Hyrule, raising himself
Still lives on Hyrule's outskirts, but sometimes ventures into Castle Town
Once a petty thief, he's the definition of a lone wolf
Well, he has learned to play nice with others after being forced to work with his alternate selves, but still isn't a great people person
Has a sarcastic streak, will tell people off to their faces
Eventually fell into favor with Princess Zelda, who pardoned his thievery in exchange for his help investigating the Temple of the Four Sword
But he's still not exactly friends with his Zelda
His four copies are now his headspace partners
Not exactly greedy, but isn't likely to take a price at face value
Wind (The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass)
Grew up on Outset Island, leading a quiet life with his Grandma and sister Aryll
Now lives on what will later be New Hyrule, building the kingdom with Tetra
Overconfident, much?
Adventurous, thrill-seeking, energetic, and always down for a scrap
The pirates were not a good influence on him
But in spite of everything, he retains a positive attitude
Very, very expressive; you'll always know exactly how he's feeling
An outdoor kid to the point that being in sterile conditions makes him physically uncomfortable
Loves his sister very much; she was the first person he brought to New Hyrule with him
Despite his wanderlust, he's actually rather terrible at navigation
Not very fashion-conscious
Knows the absolute least about technology out of any of the Links
Romantically involved with Tetra, but you wouldn't even know it from how they interact, neither of them are into the mushy stuff
Despite the initial shock, classifies “barrel launching” as his favorite pirate thrill
Light (Four Swords Adventures)
Grew up in Castle Town, raised to be a Royal Knight of Hyrule by his father
Still lives in that same Castle Town
Compared to Four, he has a lot of experience working in large crowds
In fact, he suffers from crippling separation anxiety, and spent his entire journey freaking out about how Zelda “left him”
(Has been friends with his Zelda since childhood)
Aside from that, he's generally pretty calm and reasonable
Not exactly a pessimist, but is fully aware of how things can go wrong
“Okay, I think I have a plan.”
Creates his own techniques that compensate for his lack of physical strength
(Most of these techniques require at least one other person present)
Doesn't like to hoard items, usually only keeping a few on hand
Once nearly killed his own father
Mini (The Minish Cap)
Grew up near Castle Town, raised by his grandpa Smith
Still lives in his family home
Baby! Blorbo! Scrimbly Bimbly! :D
The cutest, most wholesome kid you'll ever meet
Goofy, cracks jokes, and always keeps a positive attitude
The youngest of the group, and he gets treated as such; not that he cares
Despite his young age, he knows a fair bit about weapons due to growing up under the care of a blacksmith
Never thought he'd have to actually use his grandfather's weapons, though…
Most of his formal training comes from the Blademaster Brothers
The most wholesome platonic friendship with Zelda ever!!!
Is the only Link who can speak with the Minish, and frequently talks to them
Loves nature, and will bring absolute hell upon those who destroy it
For some reason, he rolls everywhere
His preferred unit of measurement is “mes tall”
Twilight (Twilight Princess)
Grew up in the isolated Ordon Village, raised as part of its community
Left Hyrule in search of adventure, but comes back to visit Ordon Village often
Your stereotypical farmer boy, tough as a Dodongo and not afraid to get his hands dirty
Quite mature, and emotionally distant at times, but with a heart of gold
“Fear is for the weak.” Meanwhile Lanayru's history lesson be like
Second only to Traveler in terms of wilderness survival, and unparalleled in hunting
Often speaks to animals, and loves caring for them
However, he respects the nature of the food chain, and will hunt wild animals to feed himself and the people he cares about
(Will never kill a domesticated animal)
Has the greatest physical strength of the entire group
“I'm down to wrestle! Should I hold back my strength this time?”
Barely knows his Zelda, they are not very friendly
Big brother instincts ahoy!
Has a special charm to change into a wolf, describes this form as his “spirit animal”
Not a mushy guy, even with people he genuinely loves
Acts as a mentor to Wild
Spirit (Spirit Tracks)
Grew up in Aboda Village, raised by the elderly pirate Niko
Moved into Castle Town to work as a Royal Engineer
Energetic, loud-mouthed, and a total nerd
Tends to go on lengthy tangents when the conversation interests him
In his spare time, he will spend hours reading technical manuals
If there's a problem relating to technology, call this guy
Loves trains in particular, and has spent a lot of time learning how they work
The youngest royal engineer New Hyrule has ever seen
An expert navigator, give him a map and he's like a damn GPS
Has next to no weapon skills, his only proficiency is in the Boomerang
Most of what he knows about sword fighting, he learned on the fly
Absolutely enamored with Zelda, but is too flustered to do more than a simple hug
Doesn't understand much about magic
Sky (Skyward Sword)
Grew up in Skyloft, living in the Knights Academy from a young age
Left home to establish the Kingdom of Hyrule on the Surface with Zelda
Kind and understanding, he's the go-to guy if you need a favor done
The resident team therapist for the Links
Is actually rather brilliant, but is the laziest of all the Links
He sleeps in constantly, it even irritates fellow heavy sleepers
Has a bit of a sarcastic streak, but generally only around close friends
Will help whoever he meets that doesn't try to kill him, he simply enjoys helping people
But if you make him mad, oh boy, pick a god and pray, they won't save you
When he gets going, he gets going, and it's almost impossible to pry him from his mission
Absolutely adores his Zelda in a romantic way, and will do anything for her
Feels some amount of guilt for shackling his descendents with the hero curse
Enjoys woodcarving
Arts (A Link Between Worlds, Triforce Heroes)
Grew up in a home near Hyrule Castle, working for and living under the Blacksmith
Now lives in Hytopia as an assistant to Madame Couture
A dork of the highest caliber
Flamboyant and confident, never afraid to strut his stuff
Magnetic personality, tends to befriend everyone he meets
Beneath his pseudo-narcissism lies a genuine heart of gold
Weapons are fine and all, but his true passion is fashion!
Owns around 50 outfits, many of which he helped make
Doesn't give two hecks about his gender presentation
“No, no, no! You call this a color palette?!”
Friendly with his Zelda, she goes to Hytopia often just to visit him
Surprisingly strong, can carry the weight of two other people his weight
Still has the other Triforce Heroes on his contact list
Wild (Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, Tears of the Kingdom)
Grew up in Hateno Village, became a knight at the request of his late father
Now lives in a custom ordered home outside Tarrey Town
Absolute gremlin :3
Prior to the Calamity, Link was a stoic knight who vowed to never show his true feelings for the safety of his loved ones
Now, having forgotten those vows, he's unabashedly himself
Loudmouthed, chaotic, destructive, and hedonistic, he lives life for his own pleasure
Will cook up the most scatterbrained schemes ever, and will often get himself hurt trying to show off
When Wild shows up, expect disaster
He does still have a kind heart and will help people, just in his own way
Curious almost to a fault; can get distracted easily
A great swordsman and archer, but can't seem to keep a weapon intact for more than a week; not that he cares what weapon he ends up using
Is a stellar cook, but often doesn't bother being fancy, because he will eat anything
(He once ate an actual rock steak; and liked it)
With Ultrahand, he became a technician to rival Spirit, although his creations are often less practical than Spirit's
Romantically involved with his Zelda (sorry Sidon)
Enjoys screwing with the Koroks for reasons I'm not sure even he understands
Has a personal motorcycle, the Master Cycle Zero
Unafraid to wear women's clothes, or even nothing but his undies
Warrior (Hyrule Warriors)
Grew up in Castle Town, living and training among the knights
Still lives in Castle Town, dutifully guarding the Royal Family
A pretty serious guy, outwardly fairly stoic
He does have his habits, though; especially his flair for the dramatic
Pulls off elaborate sword techniques and then refuses to acknowledge them
Is proficient in at least 5 different weapon types
The best combatant of the group, bar none
Has a bit of a narcissistic streak, though he's working on fixing that
In the past, he'd rush in guns blazing into a battle and ride off his talent and luck, but he's come to understand the importance of a good plan
Not that he could come up with a plan to save his life
Knew a few other Links personally even before (insert timeline fusing event here)
Selectively mute, often has Proxi act as his voice
Friendly with his Zelda, they're a class A platonic power couple
Has absolutely zero interest in romance, and is completely clueless about the requisite concepts like marriage or sexual attraction
Is utterly terrified of Great Fairies, too many bad memories
His scarf was a gift from Impa, no touchy!
Rhythm (Cadence of Hyrule)
Lives alone in the forest, far from any major settlements
Still lives in that same home
Cynical and bitter, rarely cracking a smile
His friendships outside of the other Links are few and far in between
Was cursed from birth; whenever he hears any kind of rhythm, he'll only be able to move to its beat, impeding his life
He hates music because of this curse, and will go out of his way to avoid it
But the curse spreading to all of Hyrule for a few hours softened his temper just a bit, and made it easier for him to accept his cursed movement
Essentially, he learned to somewhat embrace his curse rather than avoid it
Weapons combat is his autistic special interest, and he has something for any occasion
“You think I haven't planned for this?”
Enjoys the company of his Zelda, she's the only thing that can lighten his mood
Fully expects to one day have to fight the other Links
Oddball (The Faces of Evil, The Wand of Gamelon)
Grew up in Hyrule Castle during an era of peace
Still lives in the town as a knight of Hyrule's Royal Family
An absolute dork who loves adventure
Happy-go-lucky and energetic, never sitting still for too long
Gets bored very easily, and if there's no adventure, he'll often make one
Most likely to crack a joke at a gravesite
Has a massive appetite, once ate an entire Octorok
Arrogance is his downfall; he thinks himself invincible, and it's gotten him in serious trouble more than once
Not very intelligent, often bombing simple puzzles
But when it matters most, he can cut the jokes and fight until the bitter end
A bit of a hopeless romantic with his Zelda
Valiant (TV Series, Valiant Comics)
Grew up in Calatia, before leaving home in search of adventure
Now lives in Hyrule's North Palace as the defender of the Triforce
Sarcastic and brutally honest, can often come off as rude even when he doesn't mean to
Over the years, he's become more mature than his reputation would belie
He didn't care much for being a royal defender at first, finding it boring compared to his old life of roaming the world and hunting monsters
But it was made worthwhile by his relationship with the Princess Zelda
Despite often coming off as a hopeless romantic, he and Zelda do genuinely love each other, and would likely die for each other
He can be lazy at times, sometimes ditching missions when he doesn't feel like it
He can be arrogant, and not take threats seriously at times
But through and through, he is an incorruptible soul and would do anything to protect Hyrule and Catalia
Scholar (Zelda's Adventure)
Grew up near the Hyrule/Tolemac border, raised by an elderly author
Now lives deeper in Hyrule for his combat training
Shy and reserved, rarely heard in a crowd
“Sorry, you probably don't want to hear my opinion…”
Underneath his anxious tendencies is a kind soul who just wants to help people
The only Link to never have any real combat experience; is being trained by Zelda
Is a massive bookworm
Has the most general knowledge of any of the Links
Has some magic experience, but is hardly proficient at it
Massive inferiority complex around the other Links
Looks up to his Zelda as his hero
Mystery (The Crystal Trap, The Shadow Prince)
Grew up in a simple home in Hyrule, training to become a knight
Now lives in central Hyrule as a royal knight
Brave, playful, and extremely outgoing
He can make friends with nearly anyone, and often does
Not very bright, and is very inclined to follow his gut
Which often means he'll do things nobody wanted him to do
Is a bit of a prankster, and gets a kick out of annoying people, especially Zelda
Naturally curious, but would rather learn through experience than through reading
The most skilled archer of the Links
Friends with his Zelda, they go on adventures together sometimes
Is somehow the only one who can decode number-letter code
Knows a bit of sign language, but not enough to carry a conversation
Won't accept a ring as a present from anybody, doesn't elaborate why

I'm in a Zelda mood at the moment and I wanted to ask you something about Ocarina of Time - do you agree with Zelda's decision to send Link back to his childhood? I mean obviously stopping Ganon from rising up in the first place ISN'T a bad thing, but I remember being gut-punched at the time because Link and Zelda had gone through so much together and then Link's sent back without even being asked whether he wants to be and while I also get Zelda's sentiment of wanting him to actually have a childhood and get to grow up properly...I wonder whether he really could, and whether it was the right thing to do in that regard.
I actually kind of find Zelda doing that to be a selfish decision.
Like you said, it's not really a bad thing to want to prevent Ganondorf from conquering the kingdom, killing her father, and wiping out a significant part of the population. But what she does both does and doesn't achieve that.
We see in the credits sequence that the Adult Timeline remains even as Link returns to the past to create the separate Child Timeline. It's unclear if Zelda knew the timeline would split - did she know she'd have to continue to live in that timeline without Link? But by sending Link back he does save the new timeline from this round of Ganondorf's evil, but she has no way of knowing if that's truly a better life for him or the rest of Hyrule. But the timeline she remains in is unchanged. She does not actually save her people - her Hyrule - from Ganon.
And while the sentiment of wanting Link to have his childhood back is a nice one, I do think it comes from a place of looking back on her own pre-Ganondorf childhood with rose colored glasses. And not really understanding how different Link's life already was even then. And because she doesn't really ask, we never really know if Link was okay with what she did. He'd have had to already grieved for and accepted his lost childhood by that point. While he was able to revisit and even manipulate the past to affect the present, once he awoke as an adult that became his present day.
While Zelda might have believed she'd be over-writing the current timeline with a new one - up until that point, Link's time traveling to the past did affect the present... but that was time travel using the Master Sword, not the Ocarina of Time. And I suspect she knew that her timeline would persist.
So if Zelda wasn't trying to overwrite her timeline and wasn't sending Link back because it was what he wanted, then why'd she do it? I think she was projecting what she wanted for herself on to Link. There's good reason to think she blames herself for not stopping Ganondorf. For not knowing the right words to convince her father, for not seeing enough in her prophetic dreams to know what was coming... she wanted a second chance for herself. To do things right this time. But she couldn't give that to herself, so she gave it to Link.
Whether he wanted it or not.
I like the nuance reading Zelda like this gives her. She's a good person and the seventh sage (of time) but being a good person doesn't mean she's always going to do the right thing for the right reasons. And after spending seven years denying herself everything - her birthright as a princess, her very identity - it's interesting to me that the first choice she makes when her duty is done is a selfish one. An arguably good choice because she is trying to stop Ganondorf before he can truly start, but a selfishly motivated 'good' choice nonetheless. And one most likely fueled by seven years of grief.
Seen that way, the outcome of Zelda's grief carries over into Majora's Mask where Link is struggling with being a child again, with growing up the long way - the hard way - and losing friends along the way. Majora's Mask is a game about the grief of loss - Skull Kid struggles to let go of friends he's grown apart from, Link is searching for Navi who left him behind, and Zelda gave Link the Ocarina of Time in hopes that it might keep them connected even as he left her behind too. A whole world trapped in a loop as it mourns the deaths of its heroes and lost loved ones. And I like the way it all comes together, Zelda's grief leading to her sending Link back in time, Link's grief sending him away from Hyrule, and their shared grief across the timelines leading to the eventual healing of a grieving world.

Name: Link Meadowkeep
Alias(es): Firefly
Nickname(s): Old Man, Grandpa, Sprite, Fairy Boy, Mask
Birthday: (I am currently working on a calendar system for this AU, so this will come later.)
Age When Introduced: 37
Pronouns: Ko/Kir/Kor, but any pronouns are fine. Most people refer to kir with he/him pronouns
Height: 6'5
Source/Game(s): Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Hyrule Warriors
Sexuality: Demisexual and Demiromantic (though according to ko, ko is 'Malonromantic' and 'Malonsexual'. Because ko has never felt attraction towards anyone else.
Favorite Color(s): Firefly has a couple colors ko's fond of. Ko likes blue, like Malon’s eyes and still, clear water. The color Navi used to glow. And ko likes green. Kokiri green specifically. It reminds kir of kor childhood.
Disliked Color(s): When ko was younger, Firefly didn’t like the color red, especially not Gerudo red, but ko can’t dislike it now. Not with it being the color of Malon’s hair as well. So these days there aren't really any colors ko doesn’t like.
Skills: Firefly is a heavy hitter that can wield both the large great fairy sword and a shield at the same time. Outside of combat, ko is a decent rancher and ko has a talent for musical instruments of all kinds. Firefly also has a very precise internal clock. If you give kir a bit of time to think ko can tell you what time it is down to the second in most cases. Ko is most accurate if ko can see the sun or moon in the sky.
Outfit/Design Notes: Firefly's armor is based exactly around the armor that the Hero's Shade wears in Twilight Princess. Ko even has. the helmet, though ko rarely wears it except when in combat.
Firefly's build is based on the 'strongest man', which means ko has a good deal of fat over extremely strong muscles. Pairing this with the fact that ko is quite tall means that Firefly can be quite the imposing figure.
Firefly has a number of scars from kor adventures as well as kor time in the royal guard. They're scattered across kor body, but none are really visible when ko is wearing kor armor. Firefly also has some markings from kor use of the Fierce Deity mask as much as ko did as a child. These marks include the fact that ko is blind in one eye as well as red marks on kor face that match those on the FD mask and some parts of kor hair have bleached white/white-blue. Ko avoids using the mask these days if ko can help it.
Other: Having been raised by and with genderless and sexless beings like kokiri and fairies Firefly didn't have any concept of gender until ko was in kor teens. Ko understands it now (logically at least), but feels no attachment to any gender. If truly asked about it ko would tell you that ko still uses the same pronouns that ko grew up with. The pronouns that meant 'kokiri' back in the forest (the other options being pronouns for fairy, Deku Tree, and outsiders). But honestly, Firefly couldn't care less about what pronouns people use for kir (though that's not to say that ko doesn't ever use gendered nouns and pronouns to confuse and/or prank people. Ko was raised by eternal children after all).
After Firefly's time in the War Across the Ages ko returned to hyrule and ended up training with and joining the royal guard. Ko stayed with them until kor late teenage years when ko moved to Lon Lon Ranch to live with kor fiance, Malon, and her father, Talon. Ko has lived there ever since, helping tend the animals and maintain the ranch as a whole. Ko only leaves if Sheik makes a request for kir help on something the prince doesn't think the soldiers can handle for some reason.

Majora's Mask AU where everything is the same but instead of a fairy companion, he gets the ghosts in his transformation masks as companions.
Link knows what a dead Deku looks like- both a dead Deku sprout, but also a dead greater Deku tree. The latter is something he figures he can take care of, once he finds Navi and returns home. But right now, he is alone, and Skullkid just cursed him and left with his own fairies, and Link is sitting next to a corpse.
His old friend from the forest turned on him, he lost Epona and Zelda's ocarina, and while he is older than his body- he's still young. For now.
A tear of frustration leaks from his new form, which feels stiff and small, and Link scrubs it away. He defeated Ganondorf, he shouldn't be crying like a baby. He can retrieve what was lost, and keep moving. He has to.
Link stands, and doesn't notice that his tear hit the ground around the dead Deku sprout.
He braces himself, studying the gate before him where Skullkid and the fairies (and a very young part of him wants to stomp his foot and scream that it isn't fair that mean little imp gets two fairies when Link waited so long and doesn't even have his anymore-) departed through.
He does notice when a voice speaks behind him. "Oh, dear, are you going to go through? Can you? I could never go through any of the other gates in this room, but I'm not a skullkid."
Link looks over his shoulder, and sees a flickering Deku scrub, next to the corpse.
"Can you see me?" He asks, and Link nods.
"Oh." The young Deku scrub rustles nervously. "Pa- I mean, no one else could see me."
Link points to the door.
"That's Termina, where I'm from. Are you going after him?"
Link nods, then waves.
"You- you want me to come with you?"
Link nods again.
The Deku sprout couldn't move before, but now when he tests his legs- he can, stepping towards the gate back home.
Link offers him a brief flash of a smile, then keeps walking.
The Deku scrub's father is a butler, and he may be young, but he knows a thing or two about following a few steps behind, and offering information, or an ear.
He decides to help Link, and the two vanish beyond the gates together.
---
The second ghost isn't waiting by his body, Link notices of the spector Goron. Which is probably a good thing, but it's a bit of a surprise when one is used to wandering spirits being enemies.
It's also a bit of a surprise how he looks like Darunia, but Link's been getting used to that.
"Oh. That's the legendary hero, Darmani III!" Says the Deku butler's son, and Link takes another look.
A legendary hero, huh. He wonders what you have to do to earn a title like that, and if he ever will.
He's back in his own body now, and older than he looks but still- not quite old enough yet, to wonder if the thing you have to do is die.
"I wonder what happened." The Deku scrub says, quieter.
Link gestures for him to go ask, and the Deku scrub is a bit shy about it, but he's been getting braver since he met Link, and well- it is a little lonely, being the only ghost around.
Darmani is thrilled to have someone to talk to as well, and tells of his woes.
The Deku scrub, who has seen Link's prowess and determination, says he can help. Link nods in agreement, and Darmani gasps that they both could hear him this entire time.
He agrees, and lends Link his strength and his drums. He walks alongside him, and balances calm decisions and courageous boasts easily on his broad, rocky shoulders. Where the Deku scrub could tell Link about the land, Darmani can tell him about it's history.
Link doesn't begrudge the little scrub, but it's nice to have another voice, this one rumbling and deep and brave.
It's less lonely.
---
There's body the next time, and Link can't call it a corpse, not when he died in his arms.
He'd tried to help, dragging the Zora back as much as he could, looking at the wound and wondering if there was was anything he could do to help. But he didn't have any fairies or potions with him at the moment, and Darmani's face was grim.
"Lulu..." The Zora wheezed.
Link's thin arms trembled under the weight and cold water and sticky blood, and from something else. Once he'd been so relieved to return to this body, comfortable and home, but now it was so cramped.
"Lulu, baby, don't-" the Zora jolted in pain, eyes squeezed shut, breathing faster.
The song of healing didn't help wounds like this. He could try to leave, to find a fairy or potion or some other miracle, but that would mean putting the Zora down entirely on the sand.
And Link knew once he did, the Zora would never get up again.
Perhaps, if he used the Song of Time, and they got here faster..
The Zora's breathing slowed, and then stopped.
"That was another warrior." Darmani said, mournful.
"Mikau, of the Zoras." The Deku scrub agreed, quietly.
Link didn't say anything. Didn't move, until the body turned to seafoam and drifted away from him.
Well. Better than turning to a stal, Link supposed.
But then a shadow rose from the sea, and looked down at him.
"Oh." Mikau the ghost said.
Link raised a hand and wiggled his fingers, too tired for anything else.
"Oh."
He looked beyond Link, and Darmani and the scrub explained things. After, Mikau nodded.
"Will you rescue Lulu's eggs from the pirates?" He asked, bending to reach for something under the water, and when Link caught a glimpse of bone he wondered if he'd been too soon relieved about the stal- but no, it was a guitar. "I will teach you how to play, and to swim."
Link nodded. What else was there to do, but try not to think about Sheik's harp lessons as Mikau moved his fingers over the strings?
It stung. Everything did, these days. These three days, again and again. But looking at the three ghosts, that young part of Link stirred again, this time with hope - they weren't alone, and that this soon would be over.

In the context of your story, how does the Legend of Zelda timeline work?
I basically made my own timeline! Took parts of canon, melded parts together and made up my own stuff
My notes are below the cut. My notes don't cover every single incarnation of Link and Zelda from the franchise, just the ones that will be mentioned most frequently in Luminous (and especially its sequel, Iridescent), and the ones with the biggest changes to the plot (and any OCs)
Trigger warning for discussion of grooming and sexual harassment in Hyrule Warriors' section
Hylia and First: As per Hyrule Historia, Link was imprisoned on false charges of treason. The lord of the land feared his growing popularity and power, and had him locked away. In prison, Link continually had visions of Demise’s rise and he feared he had gone mad.
He was freed after 4 years when the lord died. Demise’s armies had already swept across the country, destroying almost everything. The people begged for Link’s freedom, but were denied until the lord was dead.
While Link was recovering, Hylia arrived in the city, the last stronghold against Demise. Link only met with her because he could not refuse. He was presented to the people in his old clothes, praised as their hero, chosen by Hylia herself. Link was very closed off and icy at first, not just with Hylia, but with everyone other than his friends. He was torn between vengeance and his genuine selfless nature. His relationship with Hylia was a slow-burn and never had the chance to be fully realised.
Hylia, although she loved her people, had never walked among mortals before and found she did not always understand them. She was fascinated by Link; he grew to be much more than a piece in her plans, but she couldn’t explain what she felt.
Fi: “Your Grace, your heart is going at twice the normal rate, are you well?” Hylia: “I wasn’t staring at Link!”  Fi: “…That is not what I asked.”
Hylia and Link slowly grow closer and there’s definitely romantic tension there. They frequently spend time together, especially in Link’s favourite meadow, and Hylia has taken him flying on her Loftwing.
Link dies moments after sending Skyloft to the sky, already mortally wounded. Hylia succeeds in sealing Demise away, but is slowly dying as well. She immediately goes in search of Link and finds his body. She breaks down, begging his forgiveness, and expresses her desire to be equals; to stand before him as a mortal woman and to see Link happy and free.
Hylia buries Link in his favourite meadow and brings Fi to Skyloft, hiding her away. Barely clinging to life, she refuses her sisters’ calls to return to the Sacred Realm and goes to Link’s grave. There, she sheds her divinity and disappears in a shower of golden sparks. Centuries later, she is reborn as the first Zelda and Link is reborn as another child named Link, her very best friend.
Skyward Sword: No real changes. However, Link, Zelda and Groose do not establish the Kingdom of Hyrule. They establish settlements and alliances, and grant the Surface its new name of Hyrule. Link, Zelda and Groose are all buried in the Forgotten Temple.
Sonia and Rauru: Spoilers, shh!
The First Great Calamity: A thousand years after Ganon was sealed away, the first signs of his return as Calamity Ganon began to appear. Knowledge of the Demon King has not yet been lost, though it has become fractured.
Crown Princess Zelda was joined by the very last pure-blooded Zonai, a young warrior named Illios, who was chosen by the Master Sword a year before the Calamity returned; he was the last member of the team to be found.
Together with the pilots of the Divine Beasts, they sealed the Calamity. Illios was granted the title “Link” in honour of the previous two Chosen Heroes. It changed from a title to a nickname to his preferred name over time.
Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask: When he’s sent back in time, Link and Zelda succeed in foiling Ganon’s plans before they can begin. However, Navi soon disappears, leaving without warning.
Still heavily traumatised by his quest, Link goes in search of Navi and ends up in the mysterious land of Termina. When this new quest is done, Skull Kid, Tattl and Tael accompany Link back to Hyrule.
Navi’s fate remains a mystery. Link grows up to marry Malon, and Zelda remains his best friend. When Link, in his old age, decides to hide Fi within Korok Forest, Skull Kid immediately volunteers to watch over her.
Twilight Princess: No major changes. Takes place two hundred years after OoT/MM. However, it is noted that tales of Hyrule’s founding have become mere fairytales and the First Great Calamity is fast becoming a mere myth too. Knowledge of the Divine Beasts and Guardians is practically nonexistent; it’s believed the princess and hero fought alone. History is being lost, along with the knowledge Hyrule needs to protect itself in the future.
Link/Time’s spirit is not quite as harsh and angry, though he is paranoid about Link’s/Twilight’s safety. He constantly urges his descendant to be as careful as possible and pushes him to be the very best he can be.
Unknown Princess and Hero: A close advisor of the queen, while helping to explore below Hyrule Castle, eventually found the Imprisoning Chamber. The queen was killed and the advisor was possessed by a shard of Ganon’s malice. He became little more than a rage-filled puppet, with ever-growing magical powers.
King Daphnes did what he could to protect the princess, including hiding and/or destroying knowledge of the Triforce from Ganondorf. Rauru’s seal was greatly damaged during this time. King Daphnes urged his daughter and her dearest friend (unknown to all, the destined hero that never got to be) to flee as far as they could, before the goddesses released the Great Flood.
Wind Waker: No changes to the overall plot or character arcs. Almost all prior knowledge from before the Great Flood has been lost. The stories that remain tend to contradict themselves, and no one’s entirely sure of the true history of Hyrule anymore. More information will be uncovered when Hyrule is restored but, until then, the past is shrouded in mystery and is never fully recovered.
This Link was not Chosen, but took up the mantle of his own free will, determined to save his sister (and, later, to protect Tetra too.) The Triforce of Courage itself eventually chose him and accepted him as its wielder.
Hyrule Warriors: Vastly different. Cia and Lana are not immortal Guardians, but mortal sorceresses, priestesses, and advisors to the Queen of Hyrule, and Princess Zelda. They are twins with the gift of prophecy, time magic, and magic over ice and fire. Their sacred duty was to guard the women of the royal family; they were to advise them, warn of any threats and provide any help needed. They had the highest positions on the queen's council.
Cia was always the more doubtful twin, never quite content with her station in life. She wanted to cease being a priestess and get married, she wanted to be a leader, not an advisor. But with Hylia herself commanding her to her station, how could she refuse? She felt trapped (and wasn’t entirely wrong on that point.) After a decade in royal service, she began to hear Ganon’s voice in her dreams. He played on her loneliness, promising her all manner of rewards if she would aid him and destroy the royal family. He swore she would have the life she wanted, free to love who she wanted, a leader in her own right, free to study any magic she wanted and give orders instead of following them. Maybe one day she could even be a queen...Her dreams for her ideal life were slowly twisted into obsessions. Love was replaced with lust and possession. Ambition was replaced with sheer greed and obsession with power.
As the Queen of Hyrule commanded, Cia and Lana began to try to locate Hylia’s Chosen Hero, should he have been reborn again. The queen wanted the hero to be Zelda’s husband, believing he would be the most ideal candidate for Zelda's hand. Cia found him first; a young knight trainee, only fifteen years old, named Helenus Link Altun. Preferring to go by his middle name, Link, there have already been whispers of his combat skills and his incredible beauty. Indeed, he’s easily the most strikingly beautiful person Cia has ever beheld. Cia immediately decides she wants him for her own, instead of "giving" him to the royals.
Using magic granted to her by Ganon’s “leaking” powers, Cia blocked Lana from finding Link. Any visions her twin had of the Hero end up murky and confusing. They confirmed to the queen that Hylia's Chosen existed, but they don’t know who he is, or where he is. Lana sensed a rising darkness that she believed Princess Zelda will have to face with Hylia's Chosen, but couldn't See more than that.
Cia quickly takes to spying on Link, then begins seeking him out face to face. As time passes, she spends more and more time with him, slowly trying to win him to her side. The day of his sixteenth birthday, she formally asks to court him. Link is at first flattered by the attention (Cia always claims he’s so mature for his age, so clever, so talented) but slowly starts to grow unnerved when his friends point out the age and power gap (Cia is in her early 30s, Link is barely 16. Cia is a priestess and queen’s advisor, Link is still a trainee knight.) He begins to realise how often she doesn’t listen when he says no, how she insults his friends. She presses for physical intimacy much more than he’s comfortable with and is already beginning to hint at marriage.
With Ganon whispering in her ear, Cia becomes more and more obsessed with power. Although she cannot find the Imprisoning Chamber, she can hear him. A part of her begins to wonder if she really must free him; won't he just relegate her to second place again? But no, surely not! He's her truest friend...Isn't he?
She turns to dark magic, desperate to keep Link to herself and grow her powers and station, not wanting to rely solely on "her friend." The day Princess Zelda and Link finally meet, Cia attacks with an army of summoned monsters. Zelda’s mother and most of her council are killed, Lana is badly injured. Link is injured but awakens the Triforce of Courage while protecting Impa. Cia’s attempt at taking him with her fails.
As the survivors of Hyrule Castle regroup and try to understand what’s happened and why, Cia sweeps across Hyrule, recruiting those with a grudge against the Hyrulean Royal Family, including Volga and the Yiga Clan.
There are no gates to other worlds and other times opened. It is civil war within Hyrule. Cia demands that Link be handed over to her, as her “rightful husband.” Zelda is not willing to place her new friend in danger, even if he didn’t have the Triforce of Courage. With the Triforce added into the mix, no one is willing to risk it falling into Cia’s control.
With Cia far away and no longer fogging Lana’s Sight, Lana begins to sense darkness deep underneath Hyrule Castle. As the war continues, Lana investigates and feels the “source” is incredibly powerful but contained, and somewhere deep, deep underground. The magic holding it back feels lighter and weirdly similar to Zelda's magic, but also unique in its own right.
Around this time, Cia’s forces kidnap Link from the battlefield. Link is Cia’s captive for a month. It’s said the only person who ever truly knows what happened to him during captivity is Zelda. He never told anyone else. Link is rescued by Impa and her soldiers.
With Zelda and Impa’s help, Link locates and claims the Master Sword. He feels much safer once he has it, and that relief can get to his head. As he tries to overcome his trauma, he becomes more temperamental and impatient. Healing is a slow process with many ups and downs. Meanwhile, Cia practices with shadow magic, creating dark doubles of her enemies to use against them on the field. It’s said she created copies of Zelda just to destroy them in various tortuous ways, and copies of Link just to look at them and touch them.
Link is referred to as “Helena de Ilion,” by defectors and gossips, in regards to his beauty.
Lana, Zelda, Impa and Link work together to create a seal that covers the entire underground of Hyrule Castle. Anything deeper than the escape tunnels becomes impossible for anyone to enter, including them. Without Ganon’s voice, Cia feels more alone than ever and spirals faster. She feels abandoned by her “true love” and still conflicted about "her friend." Would he have pushed her aside or let her be Queen of Hyrule? He said destroying the royals would be doing him a favour, so how did he intend to repay Cia? Was he ever going to?
In the end, Cia is killed by Link and Zelda working together. Link lures her into a trap and Zelda kills her personally.
Link and Zelda eventually marry, years after the war. They have four children together. Right to the end of his life, Link still sometimes wonders if the whole situation was his fault.
Princess Maryah and Conn: Over 1,000 years after Hyrule Warriors. Enemies to friends to found family. Princess Maryah was the youngest princess, the spoiled baby of the family. However, signs of Calamity Ganon’s return grew and her sisters were all killed, leaving just Maryah and her father.
The sword called out to a young boy named Conn, a rancher. Four years Maryah’s junior, he has no problem calling out her spoiled and vain attitude. Slowly, she grows to care for him, viewing him as a younger sibling. Perhaps the first person she wants to protect with all her heart.
To everyone’s surprise, the Calamity never arrives. (Just as well, as they never even found the Divine Beasts, just a few hundred Guardians.) However, Maryah faces assassination attempts from the Yiga Clan and, when she’s crowned, an exiled noblewoman tries to rise up in rebellion. All attempts to kill Maryah are foiled by Conn. All attempts to kill Conn are, likewise, stopped by Maryah.
The greatest threat the duo face is a poisoning attempt on Conn. As the Chosen Hero, he has some immunity to poisons. Instead of killing him, the poison places him in a coma. Soon, other courtiers and servants are poisoned. Maryah sets off in search of a cure, joined by Impa. Her council lead an investigation into the poisoner’s identity.
Maryah and Impa find the cure after successfully identifying the poison. Maryah’s council identify the poisoner: a spurned suitor who was desperate to be King, and never believed Maryah and Conn weren’t romantic. After his (eventual and furious) confession, he’s publicly executed. Maryah reigns as queen well into her 80s, with Conn acting as a beloved uncle to her children.
Breath of the Wild: 700 years after Maryah and Conn. Link and Zelda’s relationship starts out as one-sided hatred, but grows into an incredibly close and protective friendship. Both were (and still are) willing to die for each other.
With Link being a Zora Prince, they are considered to be on more equal standing. Zelda delighted in teasing Link about Mipha.
Tears of the Kingdom: Spoilers, shh!
Note: The various "Ganondorf's" we see across time are always either evil men in their own right or "infected" by pieces of the Demon King's magic. Some are truly named Ganondorf. Some, like various Heroes, are given that name as a sort of title/nickname. It is considered a highly insulting title, though the history of why and the name's origins has been long lost.

Ocarina of Time Fanfic (Ch1)
Saria, Hero of the Forest Chapter 1: If Time Was a River… Characters: Saria, Link, Mido, the Kokiri…
Disclaimer: This is a hypothetical alternate timeline to the events of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." This story is a showcase of what might have happened if Saria were to take on the role of Hero of Time in Link's place. This story includes existing events and dialogue from the game, deviating more as the story progresses and its differences become more pronounced. This is not an exact retelling, however. There are new characters, names (some characters were not given names until Majora's Mask while others didn't originally have names at all, such as Saria's fairy), and extra content meant to fill in the gaps. The story also explores and interprets available lore, diverging only when appropriate (such as to compliment the additional content). Any critique or feedback is greatly appreciated. I hope you enjoy.
 ---
Somewhere to the east in Hyrule, a foul plan has been hatched. A sorcerer from the Gerudo Desert known as Ganondorf tried to take the Kokiri’s Emerald, but when the Great Deku Tree refused him, a terrible monster was sent to curse the Deku Tree and feed on his life force. Unable to move, he was helpless against this monster. Growing weaker, he reached out to one of the fairies of the forest.
“Navi… Navi, where art thou? Come hither…”
A blue fairy hears the Deku Tree’s words, swiftly flying to his side.
“Deku Tree? What’s happened to you? You look… Sick.”
“Oh, Navi the fairy… Listen to my words, the words of the Deku Tree… Dost thou sense it? The climate of evil descending upon this realm… Malevolent forces even now are mustering to attack our land of Hyrule.
For so long, the Kokiri Forest, the source of life, has stood as a barrier, deterring outsiders and maintaining the order of the world… But… Before this tremendous evil power, even my power is nothing.”
Navy listened carefully to the Deku Tree’s words, nodding. “Did an outsider do this? Please, tell me!”
“Indeed… A sorcerer most foul sought the spiritual stone I guard. I would not bargain with him, thus do I now suffer from this curse.” A moment of silence followed as the Deku Tree stopped to regain his strength. His voice grew weaker by the second. “It seems the time has come for the boy without a fairy to begin his journey… The youth whose destiny it is to lead Hyrule to the path of justice and truth… Navi… Go now! Find our young friend and guide him to me… I do not have much time left. Fly, Navi, fly! The fate of the forest, nay, the world, depends upon thee!”
“Of course! I’ll bring him here straight away!”
And thus did Navi fly off in search of the boy without a fairy. The Deku Tree watched as Navi disappeared, waiting patiently for her return. As his life force continued to fade, a thought crossed his mind regarding the sorcerer.
That Ganondorf… I feared such a man would come here one day, a man hungry for the Triforce’s power. Such a strange, frightening figure. I wonder what he meant by “We meet again”?
---
Saria, a Kokiri girl, was sitting on a tree stump. She gently played her ocarina as forest spirits danced through the air. She had traveled to the Sacred Forest Meadow, a place of peace and quiet where she often spoke with and played music for the spirits of the forest. Today was peaceful as well, only… Something was bothering her. It was a strange, intangible feeling that she couldn’t place no matter how hard she tried.
At first, she thought she got up on the wrong side of the bed. After all, no one else seemed to be bothered. The other Kokiri were at play throughout the village as if nothing was wrong. Fado was standing on the lookout post, Mido was standing guard in front of the path to the Great Deku Tree, and many of the boys were taking care of the village. One was trying to move rocks, and another was trimming the grass in front of Saria’s house.
How nice of him! Saria thought.
The only one that Saria couldn’t see was Link. This didn’t surprise her, however, as Link was always a late sleeper. She had decided to leave him be and go to the meadow to calm her nerves. There was no need to burden the others with her troubles, after all.
The forest spirits were not talkative that day, wishing to hear Saria’s music first before they answered her questions. As she played her ocarina, that same bothersome feeling crept into her mind.
“Stop. That’s enough,” said one of the wispy spirits in the air. “Your music… It feels sad, somehow.”
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Ever since I woke up I’ve felt like something is wrong.”
“Hmm… The forest has felt strange as of late,” said another spirit. “We’ve seen deku babas sprouting up all over. Strange indeed. The Great Deku Tree should have suppressed their growth. What kind of protector is he if he’s letting all these monsters sprout up!”
“Hey! That’s no fair!” said Saria. “The Great Deku Tree’s reach extends far beyond this forest. We can’t expect him to notice every little thing.”
“It does make me worry though,” said Saria’s fairy, Poppy. “The Deku Tree would never let monsters like deku babas grow here. What if something’s wrong?”
Saria pocketed her ocarina, slapped her knees, then stood up. “I think we should go see what’s wrong then. If he needs help with anything, I think we can handle it. Don’t you?”
Poppy nodded then floated after Saria as she left the meadow behind. Hopping across the top of the maze down the stairway, Saria deftly landed on her feet at the end. As she landed, however, she caught movement out of the corner of her eye. A deku baba burst from the ground and lunged at her with its toothy maw. Saria backflipped away, dodging the plant’s bite.
“There’s one here too? Poppy, close your eyes!”
Saria reached around her back, drawing a deku nut from a pouch and a curved dagger from a hidden sheath. With a toss, the deku nut burst open, stunning the plant monster. In its moment of weakness, Saria dashed forward and sliced the deku baba’s stem, killing it in an instant. The severed stem hardened instantly, becoming a stick. Saria gave her dagger a flick before putting it back in its sheath and picking up the deku stick.
“Seems ordinary enough. Branches like this fall from the Deku Tree all the time,” said Saria as she examined the stick.
Poppy floated over to Saria and said, “You’re right. It really is the same type of wood. You don’t think…”
Saria and Poppy’s eyes met for a moment.
“Let’s not worry about that until we can talk to the Deku Tree.”
“Right!”
Saria and Poppy then left the meadow and made their way through the Lost Woods on their way to the village. While the Kokiri ran, dark thoughts bubbled in her mind.
I just hope the others are okay…
When Saria returned to the village, everything was fine. There were no signs of deku babas or any other monsters about. It seemed that whatever was happening had not yet reached the village. Saria breathed a sigh of relief, checking in on the other Kokiri as she passed through. Finally, she approached the treehouse with a ladder leading high up. At the base of the tree was a small drawing of a kid fighting a giant lizard. Just as Saria reminisced, Link stepped out of his house.
“Yahoo! Good morning, Link!”
Link looked down and waved. “Hi Saria!!”
The young boy climbed down his ladder and greeted the girl. Much to Saria’s surprise, a blue fairy was accompanying Link.
“Wait, is that a fairy? Wow! A fairy finally came to you! Now you’re a true Kokiri!”
“Pardon me,” said the blue fairy, “but we have a pressing matter to attend to! Link must see the Great Deku Tree at once!”
“Is that right? I needed to speak to him as well. I don’t want to interrupt if it’s important. Go on! I’ll wait here until you’re done. Let me know if it’s okay to speak with him when you get back.”
“Of course!” said Link. “All right Navi, lead the way!”
Link ran off with the blue fairy, and all Saria could do was wave goodbye.
“Navi, was it? I don’t think I’ve met that fairy before,” said Saria. “I’m glad he finally got one, though. Now hopefully Mido will leave him alone.”
“I’m not so sure about that,” said Poppy. “I’m sure he’ll find something else to complain about.”
Saria giggled at the comment. “Oh, those two… I hope they become good friends someday.”
The Kokiri girl waited patiently by Link’s house for a time, keeping an eye out for anything unusual. Curiously, Link returned after a few minutes with a frustrated look on his face.
“Link? What’s wrong?”
“Mido won’t let me pass!” said Link. “He says I have to arm myself before I stand before the tree. What’s with that?”
“Indeed!” said Navi. “The Kokiri boy was most rude!”
“What?! Mido won’t let you go to see the Great Deku Tree? Ohh… That bum! I don’t know why he’s always so mean to everyone!” Then the thought occurred to her. Perhaps she wasn’t the only one to have seen the deku babas. “Hmm… I don’t blame him for what he said. Strange things have been happening here lately… You need to be ready for anything, Link. I believe the Kokiri Sword is up by the training grounds, and you can get a shield from the shop. If you show up with those, Mido will have no choice but to let you through.”
Link sighed. “Do I really have to buy the shield, though? It’s not like it’s a real shop…” Link then glanced over to a rupee sticking out of a bush. “I don’t even know where they get these things.”
“I know it’s a little frustrating but try and play along. They take a great deal of pride in their work.”
“All right, all right. I think I’ll need about five blue rupees… I swear, if something bad happens while Mido keeps me out, I’m gonna slug him!”
“Don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on the village while you’re away. Good luck, Link.”
The boy left with a reassured smile on his face, waving goodbye. Saria was happy to see him in good spirits, yet that nagging feeling would not leave her alone. A cold, sinking sensation in her chest. It was almost as if…
Time passed. Saria saw Link get past Mido, but he had yet to return. It wouldn’t be long until dusk. Even the other villagers were starting to get anxious. Saria decided to check with Mido.
“Hey Mido, have you seen Link?”
The boy shook his head. “Haven’t seen him since we last spoke. I heard some fighting not long after he left. Seems he ran into some deku babas on the way,” Mido said as he pulled out a stick. “Those were some clean cuts, I gotta say…”
“Hmm. Maybe I should check on him.”
“What?! I mean, you shouldn’t worry so much about him. If he can cut stems this cleanly, I’m sure he’ll be fine… Maybe… Probably…” Mido tapped his foot impatiently, his brow furrowed. “He better come back!”
Saria decided to step away for a moment. “Poppy, what do you think?”
“There’s nowhere to really go in the Deku Tree’s domain. I can’t imagine a conversation lasting for hours.”
“What could be taking him, then?”
Worry getting the best of her, Saria marched back to Mido and said, “Let me past. I need to check on him.”
“Wait, I can’t let you through! Not without a summons!”
“Not even me? But I’ve spoken with the Deku Tree before…”
Mido scratched his cheek, glancing away. “It’s not like I want to stop you, but orders are orders, right?”
“I’ll take responsibility,” said Poppy. “If trouble should come from this, you needn’t worry.”
“But Saria doesn’t even have a weapon! What if-”
“I appreciate your worry, but I’ll be fine.”
Mido looked from side to side, as if scanning for observing eyes. “I… Um… Fine! If you really wanna see Link that badly, I won’t stop you!” The boy then stepped aside, grumbling under his breath.
As Saria passed, she looked back and said, “Thank you.” The boy pulled his cap down over his eyes, blushing. Smiling softly, Saria made her way down the path to the Great Deku Tree. Sure enough, more deku babas had grown along the path. Making use of her dagger, nuts, and swiftness, Saria made short work of the plants. At the end, she looked across the field to the Deku Tree. He seemed sickly and tired, and his bark was starting to lose color.
“Saria… Is that you?”
“It is. What’s wrong, Great Deku Tree? Where’s Link?”
“Link…? I asked him for aid. I’ve been… Cursed, you see. I tasked him with striking down the source of the curse, and yet, I still feel myself slipping away.”
“That’s terrible! Is there anything I can do to help?”
“It pains me to burden so many with my troubles, but if you would be willing, step inside me. Find Link and help him stop this curse.”
Saria looked to Poppy, then back to the Deku Tree. “Of course. I’ll do what I can.”
The Deku Tree opened his mouth and Saria approached. Standing at the base of the tree, she was reminded just how big he truly was. Often she and the others would sit in this very grove and listen to his tales of the outside world. To see the Deku Tree in such a sorry state… It pained her to no end. Steeling herself for what lied ahead, Saria stepped inside and began her search.
It didn’t take long to find clues. Inside the Deku Tree were slain monsters (many of which were skulltulas), and a large hole in the center of floor looked like spider webs had once covered it, now torn through.
“What happened here? Where did all these monsters come from?” Saria asked.
“Perhaps they were brought here by whoever put a curse on the Deku Tree.”
Saria reached the edge of the hole ringed with webbing. Looking down, she could see pools of water far below.
“Do you think Link is down there?” asked Poppy.
“Only one way to find out.”
Taking a leap of faith, Saria dove into the hole, safely landing in the water below. After emerging from the water’s surface, she saw the shallows, as well as plots of dirt and rock. There were metal bars to the south where water flowed through, as well as a stone block with curious symbols on its sides to the north.
“This can’t be right. Is this really part of the Deku Tree?” asked Saria.
“It might not be,” said Poppy, following Saria as she stepped onto land. “The Deku Tree’s roots extend far below the surface. Perhaps this place was built by our ancestors so they could check on his roots. It’d be easier to navigate than digging new tunnels every time.”
“Fair point.” Saria looked around, noticing signs of battle and burnt webbing. A half-burned deku stick was discarded by a doorway, as well as by another hole ringed with webbing. After climbing up to the hole via the stone block, Saria and Poppy looked down. “How far does this go? This is most confusing.”
“Do you think whoever built this place left a map behind?” wondered Poppy.
“Even if they did, I doubt it would have survived in these conditions. It’s simply too damp.”
“What if they kept it in a box, or a treasure chest?”
     “Now you’re just being silly.”
Once more, Saria dove down, landing in another pool of water. After emerging, she noticed a trio of deku scrubs fighting over something.
“Let me have it! Let me have it!” one cried.
“No! I saw it first! It’s mine!” said another.
“You’re both idiots! It belongs to me! He hit me first, so it’s mine now!” said the third.
It was strange. For just a moment, the thing they were fighting over looked familiar. Saria stepped onto land and swept her hair back to get the excess water out.
“You three! Did you see a young boy come through here?”
“W-what? Another one?!” shouted the deku scrub.
“We can’t let you pass! Not after our last failure!”
“Yes, yes! The queen would never forgive us!”
“The queen?” said Saria. “Who are you talking about?”
“You idiots!” shouted the largest of the scrubs. “You said too much again! Get rid of her, quickly!”
The two smaller deku scrubs stood their ground and fired nuts at Saria. She dodged one then struck the other with a stick, knocking it back at the scrub and smashing it into the wall. Saria closed the distance to the other two, batting away the nuts before finally striking the scrubs across the heads.
“You bullies! That’s what you get for attacking someone for no good reason!”
“Ow ow ow! We’re sorry!” said one of the scrubs.
“We promise we won’t do it again!”
“Honest!”
Saria sighed, crossing her arms. “You better not. Now, if you please, could you answer my question? Did you see a young boy pass through here?”
One of the deku scrubs nodded. “We did, we did! We tried to stop him the same way we did with you, but he was too smart!”
“Someone must have told him our secret! The traitor!”
“We’ll find that no good scrub soon enough!”
“Please, calm down,” said Saria. “This boy, did he have blonde hair? Green clothes?”
“He did, but…” The scrub trailed off, looking away in shame.
“What do you mean?” asked Saria.
Poppy, who had been floating over Saria’s shoulder the whole time looked behind her and flew down to the ground.
“Saria! Take a look at this!”
The Kokiri girl turned and looked. On the ground was Link’s green cap.
“Wait… Did he lose it?”
Saria knelt down by the cap and picked it up. It had a faint red stain on it. The girl’s heart sank at the sight, nearly causing her to drop the cap.
“You three…” said Saria. “Did he go through this door?”
The three deku scrubs, who were huddled up, each nodded nervously. Saria pocketed the cap, readied her dagger, then stepped through the door.
On the other side was a large dark chamber. Stone came slamming down behind Saria after she took a few steps past the door. Pillars of old grey wood supported a twisted ceiling of gnarled roots, and a cold mist obscured the ground. A skittering sound could be heard further within. Saria looked around, but no sign of a monster could be seen. Just skittering, skittering, skittering…
Stepping lightly, Saria moved further into the chamber. A faint flicker of blue light caught her attention, and upon moving closer, Saria realized what it was. A wounded Navi was on the ground, missing a wing. So shocked by the sight, Saria dropped her dagger and scooped up the fairy.
“Navi? Navi! What happened? Who did this to you?!”
“The eye…”
“What?”
“It uses magic to hide… Seek the eye…”
The small fairy went still in the Kokiri’s hands. A tear slipped down her face as Saria placed the fairy in a pouch.
“I’m sorry, Navi. Just hold on for a little while longer.”
Just then, the air shifted. Saria dodged on instinct, avoiding a fatal blow. She suffered a small cut across her leg, however. As she looked around, there was no sign of her attacker. The air shifted again, forcing Saria to roll out of the way. Picking up her dagger as she rolled, Saria got back on her feet in a fighting stance. Then, in the middle of the air, a bright blue eye manifested, its pupil spinning backwards as another pupil appeared. The mist flowed against the faint outline of something strange and insect-like as invisible eyelids closed and the creature disappeared.
“So that’s what she meant,” said Saria. “Poppy, can you see it?”
“Barely, but it’s fast.” Saria and Poppy stayed on the defensive, waiting. Then before the beast struck, Poppy shouted, “Behind you!”
Saria ducked, striking at where she thought a limb might be. The dagger cut across something that felt like steel. The creature was quick to move away, changing its position once more. This exchange went on until the eye revealed itself momentarily. This time, Saria was prepared. She struck a deku nut at the ground below the eye, stunning the beast. The Kokiri made a mad dash and struck at the eye, slicing again and again.
When the beast could move, it darted away, clambering onto the ceiling. Not long after, three egg sacs hit the floor, birthing two-legged eye beasts with singular horns on their heads. When their eyes and horn tips grew red, they charged. Three on one, it was all Saria could do to stay on the defensive. Waiting for an opportunity, Saria struck down one of the beasts, scaring the other two away. Though she was on edge, Saria left them alone. Hostile though they were, she felt bad striking down creatures so young.
Soon enough, the large monster returned to attack. Since it worked the first time, Saria readied a deku nut. She kept dodging the monster’s attacks, and sure enough, it took a peep with its eye to confirm her position. Just before she threw the nut, however, one of the baby monsters leapt in the way, causing Saria to hesitate. The monster’s eye glowed red and its invisible limb shot out, piercing the baby and pinning Saria against one of the wooden pillars.
“That was one of your own! You monster!”
The creature cackled. “I care not. I can always make more.”
Saria tried to swipe with her dagger, but another clawed limb swatted the knife away. A third limb reached up to Saria’s face, bringing a claw to her cheek.
“Where is it?”
“where’s what?”
“The stone! I need the stone!!”
“The Kokiri Emerald? Why would you want that?”
“Don’t ask questions! Tell me where it is, and I may spare your life.” The claw dug into Saria’s cheek, drawing blood. “But be quick about it. My brood is still hungry. I can’t hold them off forever…” said the monster with a mocking tone.
She wasn’t sure what to say. Saria had heard of the spiritual stone, but its location was a closely guarded secret. Not even she knew.
“Well?!” The claw dug further in. “I’m waiting!!”
Before things took a turn for the worse, Poppy (who had slipped away) floated up from behind the monster, carrying a deku nut. After getting into position, she dropped the nut right onto the monster’s eye, stunning it. Saria broke free, picked up her dagger, then drove it straight into the eye. The monster stumbled back, hissing and howling, then finally collapsed. As if they drew their life force from their queen, the little ones collapsed as well, and then they all faded away in ghostly blue flame.
“Saria, are you okay?” asked Poppy, flying close.
“I’m fine, but where’s Link? I thought those scrubs said he came in here?”
Poppy’s eyes turned downcast. “I… Saw him while I was flying about.”
“Is he wounded? Show me to him.”
“I… I’m not sure I-”
“What are you saying? Show him to me!”
Tears streamed from the fairy’s eyes as she cried, “I can’t!” and flew away.
“Poppy!!”
Wounded and feeling as if a stone was in her throat, Saria searched the chamber. She did find Link, but…
There was nothing left but bones.
“Link… Link…!”
Saria fell to her knees, the strength in her body leaving her. As she reached down for the tattered green cloth and bones, magical light enveloped her.
“No, what’s happening? Link! Link come back to me! Link! LIIIIIIIIIINK!!!”
Saria disappeared from the chamber, teleported back outside by strange magic. Mido was the first to come running into the field, followed shortly thereafter by the other Kokiri.
“Saria! You’re okay!” shouted Mido. “What happened? Where are the others?!”
The girl, who was clinging onto tattered cloth looked up at her friend with teary eyes.
“He’s… He’s gone…”
The other Kokiri reeled at those words, Mido most of all. The boy’s legs shook as he struggled to stand. Before he could ask more questions, the Deku Tree spoke up.
“Saria… Thank you…”
“Thank me? For what?”
“Dost thou not remember thine deeds? Thou has verily demonstrated great courage.”
“But… I didn’t make it in time. I… Couldn’t save him.”
“I know, and for that I am sorry. It was I who tasked him with ending my curse. Perhaps what is happening is my punishment for my misjudgment.”
Saria and Mido looked to one another, then to the Deku Tree.
“What do you mean?” asked Mido. “Did Saria not break the curse?”
“She did, but the curse took too much of a toll on me. Please… My time is short. There is much I must tell you before I go.”
Saria, still grasping onto the tattered cloth, stood up.
“Okay. Tell me.”
“Thank you. Now… Listen carefully… A wicked man of the desert cast this dreadful curse upon me… This evil man ceaselessly uses his vile, sorcerous powers in his search for the Sacred Realm that is connected to Hyrule… For it is in that Sacred Realm that one will find the divine relic, the Triforce, which contains the essence of the gods…”
“The gods? Do you mean Din, Nayru, and Farore?”
“Indeed. Dost thou remember the tale? When the three goddesses finished making the world, they departed for the heavens. And golden sacred triangles remained at the point where the goddesses left the world. Since then, the sacred triangles have become the basis for our world’s providence. And, the resting place of the triangles has become the Sacred Realm.”
“Then that bad man must be after the Triforce, right?” said Mido.
“Yes. Thou must never allow the desert man in black armor to lay his hands on the sacred Triforce… Thou must never suffer that man, with his evil heart, to enter the Sacred Realm of legend… That evil man who cast the death curse upon me and sapped my power… Because of that curse, my end is nigh… Though your valiant efforts to break the curse were successful, I was doomed before you started… Yes, I will pass away soon… But do not grieve for me… I have been able to tell you of these important matters…”
A green orb of light appeared mid-air, floating down to Saria.
“This is Hyrule’s final hope… Saria… I know I ask much of you, but go to Hyrule Castle… There, thou will surely meet the Princess of Destiny… Take this stone with you. The stone that man wanted so much that he cast the curse on me…”
Saria took the stone, which was a brilliant green emerald with gold swirled around it, reminding Saria of a seed.
“But Great Deku Tree… I thought if a Kokiri left the forest they would die? What are you asking of me?”
“The world is full of danger and strife. Within the forest I could always watch over and protect you, but beyond this place I could not. With my disappearance, you must all learn to protect yourselves through your own strength. I am… Sorry to leave you all… But I believe in you. Stay together… Train well… Do what you must… And Saria, the future depends upon thee… Thou art courageous indeed…”
Before her very eyes, the Great Deku Tree began to wither. His brown bark turned grey, his leaves fell one by one, and his voice went silent. His spirit departed, all the Kokiri were reduced to tears.
Saria returned to the inside of the tree, seeking out Poppy, Link’s remains, and anything else of import. Link had the Kokiri sword and a deku shield, which she entrusted to Mido. Saria kept Link’s slingshot and cap, burying the rest with Navi beside the Great Deku Tree. What felt like days passed as the Kokiri mourned the loss of so many and struggled to pick up the pieces. Mido, who had always called himself the boss of the Kokiri, earned his title by directing others and staying strong in the face of looming danger. Soon enough, the Kokiri who were unfamiliar with the ways of battle swiftly learned, fashioning bark and sticks into shields and weapons. Mido and the others would protect the village no matter what.
At least… That’s what Saria hoped.
After talking it over with Poppy, Saria decided it was time to go. She had been entrusted with an important task by the Great Deku Tree. She had to leave the forest and seek out this so-called Princess of Destiny. Once she finished preparing food, supplies, and her gear, she put on a cloak the others fashioned for her as a gift and made her way to the bridge.
As she stepped onto the bridge that sat between Kokiri Village and the outside world, she saw Mido waiting for her.
“You really are leaving, huh?”
“Of course. What choice do I have?”
“You could stay! That bad man wants the spiritual stone, right? If you leave, you’ll be walking right into a trap!”
“But if I stay, he’ll only come back. He’s already done enough harm here.”
“Then let me come with you! Surely it would be safer than being by yourself!”
“The village needs you, Mido. They need a leader. Besides. I won’t truly be alone. I have Poppy, and…” Saria put a hand to the green cap on her head. Mido looked up at it.
“I thought I saw you cleaning it… I still can’t believe he’s gone.” Mido paused for a moment. “Do you… Hate me? If I didn’t let him through, then-”
Saria hugged Mido, patting him on the back. “How could I? This wasn’t your fault, nor the Great Deku Tree’s. It was that monster and the man from the desert.” Saria let go, stepping back. “It all feels wrong. It feels like he should be standing here. I always thought he would leave the village someday. Maybe he would have if it weren’t for that man…”
“What do you think you’ll do if you encounter him? To enter the village undetected and hurt the Deku Tree so… He must surely be strong.”
“I don’t know. But maybe I’ll learn. If the outside world is truly dangerous, then I’ll need to be strong as well. I’ll fight, survive, and seek out the princess. And if I see that man and he hesitates for even an instant…” Saria gripped the handle of her dagger, “I’ll make him regret it.”
Mido couldn’t help but chuckle at the statement, even as he cried. “Spoken like a true warrior. Seems you’ve graduated from being the big sister of the village! Best of luck then. And please… Don’t forget about us.”
“Don’t worry. As soon as I’m done, I’ll return straight away.”
“You better not be lying!” Mido shook his fist. “You hear me!”
For the first time in days, Saria smiled. Without another word, she ran across the bridge and out the tree hollow. For a moment, fear clenched her chest. She had always been told over and over that if a Kokiri left the forest they would die. Even after being told otherwise, instinct almost stopped her dead in her tracks. She pushed through it, however, and left the forest behind. She was still alive, and her journey had finally begun.

HEADCANON COMPILATION: GENERAL TIMELINE (POST-OOT TO TP)
i was going through my headcanons tag on this blog   &   decided to compile/expand on what i had previously written regarding post-oot. surprisingly enough, these headcanons from 2019-ish still hold up to my interpretation of link. the details might change in the future, of course.
* NOTE: if you write any of the characters i mention (ie. oot zelda, ganondorf), you don't have to adhere to anything i bring up. these are my personal thoughts. i'm 100% cool with adapting to different interpretations of how everything plays out. that's the beauty of rping, don't you think? ^^
after being returned to the past by princess zelda, link sneaks past the guards to hyrule castle's courtyard. there, he meets the young zelda. for her, this might be their first time meeting. for him, it's the past repeating itself... but now, there's no fairy by his side, and link is more mature than he used to be.
link does everything he can to warn the royal family   &   expose ganondorf's true intentions. the terrible future he experienced won't repeat itself  —  not if link can help it.
he stays for a while. he spends time with the princess and reconnects with familiar faces... or, at least, link attempts to; they don't know him in this timeline. (that realization hits him hard.) all the while, the young hero searches for any signs of navi. epona becomes his steed once more during this time.
eventually, the search leads him to the land of termina. it's surreal to see familiar faces, except none of them are the same as their hyrulean counterparts. link gets cursed; he helps people, clears temples, collects masks... three days repeat over and over again until he awakens the giants   &   defeats majora with tatl the fairy by his side.
once again, it's just link and epona on the road. but why does tatl's absence hurt despite knowing it wouldn't last?
link resumes his travels and helps those in need. every now and then, he is back in his homeland with peculiar-looking masks in his possession. link keeps growing in height (one day, he notices he's seventeen again); his equipment changes. some days, he looks haunted.
the day ganondorf's execution goes terrible wrong, the triforce of courage burns on the back of his left hand.   &   all link feels is dread: it's still not over.
it takes years until he (reluctantly) gives up on his search. after accepting the offer of becoming a royal knight, he seems to settle down. (alternatively: he enlists and rises through the ranks as a competent swordsman.)
now, onto the depressing part of this, which i'm placing under read more. cw: death + a non-graphic mention of injury and eye trauma.
link's death isn't peaceful. it doesn't come to him in his sleep, no; it comes to him on the battlefield. the hero succumbs to his injuries and blood loss sometime after he pierces the enemy general's heart. the battle is won, but link is no more.
the loss of his right eye   &   the stab in his gut count among those injuries.
his death leaves an unborn child fatherless. the teachings of the old aren't passed down until much, much later; the hero of time becomes a spirit burdened by his regrets, a shade of his former self.
they bury him in hyrule. the exact location of his grave is lost to the sands of time. but some say he might have been granted a final resting place on the castle grounds...

Welp. Definitely gonna replay Ocarina of Time sometime soon. Probably after I finish the Champions DLC in Breath of the Wild. So before Tears of the Kingdom comes out. I already have Mipha’s part done.
But anyways.
That was FUN. Time is still my favorite Link. Wild being a close second. Sky and Twilight are both tied for third.
Alsjskjsksks Navi flying away gave me feels. Mostly because she was Time’s bestie and he’s gonna be looking for her in the short future, to no avail. 💔 Glad that the sages were able to return to their normal lives after everything. I felt so bad for Mido and the Zora King, sitting together in the corner missing Saria and Ruto.
But seriously devs, why you never say what happened to her??? It was never revealed in Majora’s Mask. 😭 Give Time some form of closure, I beg of you. It’s what he deserves.
Tumblr media
Ganondorf playing his own theme music was honestly the ✨best✨ thing he’s ever done. I was sort of jamming to the music when I was walking up the stairs and then go through the door and BAM Ganondorf is playing the music on the organ.
He really decided he was going to add some ominous ambience for Link’s journey through his castle, lol.

not to be like I'VE SOLVED THE ZELDA TIMELINE but i think i solved the zelda timeline. it always bothered me that the timeline split has two modes (link dies in the ganon boss fight and the downfall timeline happens OR link wins and the child/adult timelines happen simultaneously. if link dies, child/adult cannot happen and if he wins, downfall cannot happen) but i was thinking about totk and its implications for the timeline. spoilers for tears of the kingdom's main story and dragon tears (also ocarina of time, and mild spoilers for wind waker, majora's mask, twilight princess, and link to the past i suppose) under the cut!
okay so skyward sword to pre-ocarina of time happens as we know, on a path towards what we know as the downfall timeline. link, after gathering the spiritual stones, pulls the master sword, which sends him down a new branch of the timeline (what we know as the adult timeline) seven years in the future where ganondorf has taken over. link gathers and awakens the sages and seals ganondorf, and zelda sends link back to his original timeline. zelda's branch of the timeline leads to the rest of the adult timeline*. back in the downfall timeline, link wakes up in the temple of time, and navi flies away. narratively i assume this is some loss of innocence symbolism or something but lore-wise i have no idea why she does this. anyway. link wants to warn the royal family of ganondorf's plans to take over, but goes to find navi first (because she speaks for him? because he has no authority or credibility without a fairy? because he just wants to find his friend before doing anything else?) so he heads out to look for her in the lost woods. he runs into skull kid, loses his horse, and falls to termina. he spends three days trying exploring clock town, before confronting skull kid atop the clock tower and using the song of time and skipping back three days; however, the timeline he leaves behind is still the downfall timeline!!** link then runs through between three and infinity more three-day loops in termina. on his last loop, he has everything he needs to defeat majora, leave termina, and return to hyrule. finally, this leads into the child timeline.***
*adult timeline: OoT link is sent away, leaving zelda behind in the new timeline created by his pulling of the master sword. ganondorf breaks free from his seal, and there's no hero to stop him, leaving the people of hyrule to pray to the gods and invoke the flood to seal hyrule beneath the great sea. ganondorf frees himself from hyrule (maybe he uses sheikah tech?? the tower of the gods is DEFINITELY a sheikah shrine right??), sets up in the forsaken fortress, and then wind waker/phantom hourglass/spirit tracks happen
**downfall timeline: MM link leaves the downfall timeline. the moon falls, termina is wiped out, and link never returns to hyrule to warn the royal family about ganondorf. instead, zelda arrives from the era of TotK, the dragon tear memories happen (note that in tear 6, rauru hasn't heard of link!) and ganondorf rises to power. zelda (TotK) and the king gather the sages to confront him, rauru seals ganondorf, and banishes SOMETHING that i'm calling ganon**** away in the sacred realm, where it secures and uses the triforce to twist it into the dark world. aghanim attempts to free ganon and link to the past happens, and the rest of the downfall timeline happens, eventually leading up to breath of the wild and then totk (with a fun little offshoot for age of calamity)
***child timeline: link returns to the royal family and warns them of ganondorf's plans. ganondorf is sentenced to execution, the triforce of power saves him, and he's exiled to the twilight realm instead. years pass, link dies and becomes the hero's shade, and twilight princess happens.
****"hey what the fuck is ganon?" i guess like how calamity ganon (BotW) is an extension of ganondorf's power and hatred, or like how phantom ganon (TotK) is able to harass link in hyrule castle despite ganondorf remaining deep below, the pig ganons we see in downfall timeline games (link to the past, link between worlds, oracle linked game, zelda 1 and 2) is some sort of separate entity that is an extension of ganondorf's will, able to carry out his plans (albeit often in a somewhat unintelligent manner, pig ganon is usually somewhat mindless and hyperviolent) while ganondorf's true body remains sealed
i do acknowledge the irony of trying to Solve the Zelda Timeline while also just Deciding TotK's past is the same period as OoT despite major differences! i am aware that there's probably some pretty damning evidence against that timeline placement, but i subscribe to that Storyteller theory where the reason some things completely and inexplicably change between games is bc each game is an interpretation of a legend being told by a different person. yes it's handwavey but that's not what this post is about. what this post is about is Man the Two Modes timeline really annoyed me and i think making it so the OoT ganondorf fight isn't the Singular Crux of the timeline split (instead making it the consequences of a number multiple instances of time travel) is a solid way to iron that out

VERSE RUNDOWN.
ocarina of time - child tag: pending
the catch-all timeline prior to pulling out the master sword. young, naïve, and full of hope, young link can either be still nestled in the bosom of the kokiri forest, blissfully ignorant to the outside world, or freshly set out on his adventure. he is nine years old, and will be ten by the time he is able to pull out the master sword.
ocarina of time - "adult" tag: pending
air quotes around 'adult' because in this time, link has only recently pulled the master sword, and has awakened at seventeen. an adult by the standards of the master sword and the goddesses, but by all rights still a child, link is still full of ambition and excitement, even as he acclimates to having the body and mentality of a young man. it is a strange transition, knowing moments before--in his mind, at least--he was only ten, and now, unable to be explained, he doesn't feel the same. nevertheless, he takes on his duty with pride.
this verse can be set at any point in his journey, but note that by the end of it, he is world-weary and has seemingly aged beyond his seventeen years. he is eighteen by time he fights ganondorf, verging on his nineteenth birthday.
majora's mask tag: pending
eleven year old link impulsively goes out to find navi after revealing the truth of ganondorf in the child timeline. malon provides her blessing with the gift of a yearling epona, and zelda teaches him the melody of the royal family as a good luck charm--one he cannot tell her he already knew. he was gifted the honor of training to become zelda's personal guard, and manages to ask the king to allow him a year's time to find himself, and return instead as a trainee captain of the royal guard. he and zelda frequently spend time together, but he cannot handle it, let alone bear the responsibility of her life on his shoulders. the king grants his request, amused enough by the boy's maturity and well-spoken demeanor to allow this seeming slight against his judgment.
he carries himself with the aura and demeanor of someone who has seen the nature of the world around them, older beyond his years, and those magically gifted can sense there is more to the hylian boy. he seeks not only navi, but also his own reason for existence without the mantle of hero of time to give him purpose.
ocarina of time - post tag: pending
when he returned from termina, link was twelve years old and on the cusp of his thirteenth birthday. while time passed unusually in termina, it left hyrule unaffected, allowing his natural aging to not be suspicious to anyone outside of the three-day timeloop.
as he vowed, he returns to hyrule castle, and is honored as a knight of hyrule, brought into the fold of the other training soldiers. he is the youngest among them, and yet the most talented, wielding a blade as if it were an extension of himself. he advances rapidly through the ranks, but it is a hollow thing to him, and he remains humble as he bonds with his fellow soldiers. at eighteen, he is crowned the youngest captain hyrule has seen, and has his own squadron of knights he oversees. in spite of his age, the royal knights regard him as the leader that he is, and link often feels uncertain of how well-placed their faith in him is.
present day, he is in his early thirties, and is a prized champion of hyrule. the king enjoys flaunting the young man at events and festivals as though he were a crown jewel, often coercing link to join the sword-fighting competitions to demonstrate his abilities. he remains captain of the royal guard overseeing zelda's protection, and the king has maintained his promise to allow link to keep distance from the princess.
when he is not fulfilling his duties in the castle, he is at lon lon ranch, renting a room there and helping part-time as a stablehand. malon certainly does not mind his company, and she's happy to have epona back on the ranch to cuddle and coo over.

Ocarina of Time Rewrite
The Deku Tree, and Jabu Jabu were cursed by Demise.
Jabu Jabu is presumed to be under the weather for no reason.
And I think the Deku Tree's line would instead be, "Now...listen carefully...An old and great power afflicted me with the curse. It will soon take the shape of a man from the desert. You must prevent this power from taking this...the Kokiri Emerald…" in place of the canon dialogue.
Similarly Dodongos started to greatly increase in the cavern because of Demise's Influence, similar to the surge of monster numbers we see in BOTW, making it unsafe for Gorons to get their food so they closed it off to keep the infestation at bay.
See how none of this is Ganondorf's fault?
Ganondorf's tribe was afflicted with famine, and disease so he traveled to Hyrule to make allies so his tribe could survive (DESPITE Hyrule and the Gerudos history. His tribe was cut off from other Gerudo so they couldn't go to them for help. He was very desperate). He slowly became influenced by Demise's Curse the longer he spent in Hyrule Castle- because I believe the curse's focal point is beneath the castle, where Demise was once sealed. Demise's Curse only truly took control when; The Sacred Realm was opened and the Triforce split, and Ganondorf was given the Triforce of Power (Demise's piece of the Triforce).
Also, whatever Ganondorf's Coup thing that caused Impa and Zelda to run out of Castletown? Yeah no. Zelda gets the vision that she needs to leave the castle for her safety and stay hidden. Impa trusts her, and they stop by Link to drop off the Ocarina of Time.
When Link opens the entrance to the sacred realm, Ganondorf is there because Demise's influence is becoming stronger and basically puppeteers him to the Temple of Time to regain the power it needs to take over Ganondorf's body.
Post 7 year nap, Demise- in the form of Ganondorf does the shit he did. Link, Zelda and the Seven Sages defeat Demise, and Zelda sends Link back once the curse was broken for the meantime, to prevent Demise's curse rising in the first place.
He's sent back after he is told by the Deku Tree to go to Hyrule Castle but before he meets Zelda. He gives Zelda the Kokiri Emerald to keep safe, while catching her up to what happens if the Door of Time is opened. Then, afterwards Link goes to Ganondorf, gives him a warning to leave Hyrule Castle but he’s arrested by the Hylian Guard for treason. Link tries to protest but he is a child- and his accounts of “Ganondorf” causing mayhem (As told by Zelda) contradict his supposed innocence.
He helps out the Gorons, Zora and Nabooru, again, not taking the spirit stones with him but instead telling them to protect them fiercely. Nabooru isn't kidnapped, thanks to Link dealing with Koume and Kotake early. He gives her the silver gauntlets and informs her of what has happened (mildly breaks down because he couldn’t stop them from arresting Ganondorf). Nabooru and her tribe leave further into the desert to evade the Hylian Soldiers and search for help among the other Gerudo for their tribe's afflictions.
Then Link starts to get ready to look for Navi, Zelda gives him the Ocarina of Time for him to keep safe in return. He gives Saria the fairy ocarina back and sets off with Epona- who he bought from Talon (His wallet just defies time itself ig).
Then Majora's Mask happens.

So, with the help of the wonderful @wandering-horizon, I came up with a Legend of Zelda / Linked Universe AU where every Link is a Zelda species that isn’t Hylian So here’s what I came up with and how it influenced their respective stories
Sky - Rito
When Skyloft was raised above the clouds by Hylia, the Rito were already there
The Rito helped the Hylians get accustomed to life above the clouds and the two species quickly came to rely upon each other
Link is born a Rito and grows up on Skyloft, where things are pretty similar to the original story, he is best friends with Zelda and studies at the academy to become a knight
When Zelda disappears beneath the clouds, he draws the goddess sword and follows her
Things continue on quite the same way as in the game, just with Link wielding the sword with both his "hands" and foot claws, because him flying around and cutting down enemies at the same time is just really neat
He also pecks out one of Ghirahim's eyes at one point because he can
Four - Minish
I've had this headcanon, that the Hero of Men, the one before Four who made the picori blade, was actually a Minish who came through the Minish door (which transformed him into a Hylian for the time) to protect Hyrule
So yeah, basically that
Link is Ezlo's grandson who is also an apprentice with Melari and when Vaati goes rogue he helps his grandfather in defeating him
I imagine him being really confused by being so tall at first and that he still retains some Minish like traits
Time - Kokiri
Link is an actual Kokiri in this, with Navi as his fairy
His life in the Kokiri forrest is pretty peaceful, though Mido still bullies him, because he's best friends with Saria and Mido is jealous, until the Deku Tree calls for him
The Kokiri Emerald allows him to leave the forrest unharmed and so he goes to help Zelda
The rest of the story is pretty much the same, except that he doesn't age when he goes into the future, because he really is an immortal forrest child this time around
Let's just say that Ganondorf is pretty angry about being beaten by a 9 year old
At the start of Majora's Mask when Skullkid steals the ocarina and Epona, he also imprisons Navi in a bottle
Tatl is kind of shocked about that and that plus the fact that she can sense his Kokiri nature result in her trusting and liking Link much sooner
Link manages to free Navi when he gets back his ocarina and from then on it's another adventure, this time not just with his mom but also with his newly acquired older sister Tatl
Twi - Twili
His story is quite different from the one in the game
With him growing up in a completely different world and such
In the beginning he lived a relatively simple life, getting by by doing odd jobs for other people
When Zant staged his coup and started turning helpless Twili into Shadow beasts, Link tried his best to help people escape in time
Zant really didn't like this and sent the beasts after him
Not wanting to fight his people, he ran, stumbling onto the portal to Hyrule
Eventually, Zant caught up to him and tossed him out into the light in the hopes of killing him
Instead of dying, Link is saved by the triforce, which transforms him into a wolf which let's him survive in the world of light
He knows he needs to defeat Zant before the usurper can destroy both Hyrule and the Twilight realm and so he sets out to free Hyrule from the Twilight
The light spirits give him their protection and with the master sword he gains the ability to keep his Twili form even in the light
Of course he also travels with Midna, though he meets her later in the story
Also he obviously knows who Midna is, since the name and the vast amount of magic she possesses is kind of a giveaway
Legend - Zora
He's a sea Zora, so he's different from the rather mean ones in his Hyrule, since their tribes lost contact a long long time ago and he looks more like an ocarina of time Zora
A pink one
He washes up at the beach one day when he's still a tiny little kid and a Hylian man (his uncle in the game) takes him in and raises him
He has to deal with a lot of crap from people because he's Zora and most Zora in his Hyrule just really like spitting fire balls at people
It's also why people don't believe him when he goes out to help Zelda and say he's kidnapped her instead
As for Kohilint, the storm hits him when he's out looking for his family and Marin is also a Zora
He ends up being afraid of storms at sea after that whole debacle and just kind of avoids the ocean after it
Hyrule - Fairy
What can I say, he's the original fairy boy after all
He's not just a regular fairy though, but a very young great fairy, young enough that his usual form isn't that different from a regular fairy
However, he possesses a lot more magic and even has the ability to grow to Hylian size for a time, enabling him to wield sword and shield and fight the various monsters and Ganon
One of the reasons he travels so much is the fear of being bound to a single place once he's grown up, being a great fairy and all and he wants to see all much of the world as possible before that
Wind - Korok
He lives in the forest on outset island and is best friends with Aryll
Once Tetra shows up and Aryll gets kidnapped, he decides he needs to go out and save her
So he asks Aryll's grandma for the sword and shield (grandma is kind of surprised since it's the first time she's ever seen a Korok and she wasn't quite sure Aryll didn't just have an imaginary friend) and sneaks onto Tetra's ship
She discovers him, being able to see him even when he doesn't want to be seen, triforce of wisdom and such, but she's so impressed by him being able to sneak onto her ship that she lets him stay
He has fun with the crew, flying over Nico's obstacle course with Korok magics, and infiltrates the forbidden fortress
From there on it's much like in the original stories though everyone is really surprised and shocked that a usually peaceful forest fairy can wield a sword with such devastation
Needles to say, Ganondorf is even more surprised when he's stabbed in the face this time around
Wars - Gerudo
He's Gerudo, he's trans and he's here to end Ganon's whole career
He isn't a Hylian soldier in this but a Gerudo warrior and the first part of the war takes part without him
Which also means that it isn't going too well for the Hylian forces and Ganon revives way faster
The Gerudo haven't dealt much with the rest of Hyrule for many decades, but they take the return of Ganon in the form of a Gerudo as a personal insult and immediately join the war, turning the tide, especially with War's proving himself to be an unrivaled warrior as well as the hero
Wild - Sheikah
With all the Sheikah tech in his game it only makes sense
Before the calamity, he was Zelda's personal bodyguard, the way Sheikah often are for the royal family
Him and Zelda got along pretty well, having known each other for a long time, but they sort of drift apart once he draws the master sword, as Zelda envies him for his easy his destiny came to him, and he kind of struggles with the burden of the whole world, as his life was kind of all laid out for him before the master sword
Once the calamity strikes everything goes pretty much the same way, but his interactive with the yiga clan are way more intense this time around, because he's a Sheikah as well as the hero
So yeah, there you have it, my personal Zelda AU
I hope you like it

aughhh the kokiris are my favorite narrative in ocarina of time its just so SAD seeing no one grow up except for you and them not being able to recognize you is so... and when you recontextualize that w the ending of oot and the premise of majora's mask its so sad bc that means even tho link is sent back to time before collecting all the medallions and saria will technically never have to be a sage he still wont be able to return to the life he had w the kokiris because he'll eventually outgrow them anyways.. and the fact his kokiri upbringing is never bought up in the game is also sad and u can chose to infer that link departed/cut himself off from the kokiris when he went off to search for navi :((
but maybe that's what the masked salesman last few lines mean...
Tumblr media
when u recontextualize this with the idea that after this link returns back home, along with saria's song being the last melody that plays in the game, then.. T_T

To Heal A Knight
Another one. Legend of Zelda has snared my brain especially with all the hurt/comfort potential, k? So why not focus on the potentially most traumatized Link, Post Majora's Mask. If you prefer to use Jojo's Linked Universe name for him, Time. And then insert a family who will throw hands with a god for their kid's sake, the Wachowskis from Sonic 2020.
Thus this idea was born. After leaving Termina in search of Navi, Link doesn't end up back in Hyrule. The Lost Woods decides to drop him and Epona off at Green Hills, Montana. After the events of the first movie but way before Sonic 2. Gotta give him enough bonding time and Sonic some older brother experience.
Something occurs to startle Epona knocking Link off his steed and leaves him with a badly sprained leg. Sonic finds the injured Hylian while Tom comes across Epona. The hedgehog has a bit of difficulty getting Link to follow him back to the house. He's reasonably weary but eases up upon seeing his horse at the house.
Epona has a keen sense when it comes to people so not anyone could handle her without an issue. The fact she'll let Tom lead her is enough proof for Link to trust them. Of course, he doesn't take the news about being in a different world well. Tom, Maddie and Sonic are way more concerned about hearing Link's adventures. No kid should've experienced the kind of horrors like Link did, being asleep until he's seventeen is no excuse either.
Thus they take it upon themselves to help the young Hylian heal, both physically and mentally. Give him a chance to experience some sort of childhood that he rightfully deserves. And that's what they intend to do. This is a tale of home vs heritage, healing, found family and revelations.
Will Link stay with the Wachowski family instead of returning to Hyrule? Maybe, maybe not. I can say he'll be taking part in Sonic 2 events alongside bonding with Knuckles and Tails. There will plenty of mask shenanigans and Tom might be hearing a certain trapped deity in his head.
Fierce Deity, who I call Valion, will definitely make a bunch of appearances. We need more Fierce Dadity. Although I will say that it won't always be through Link. Hehehehe~
Now if this Link gets involved with the Chain of Links or Linked Universe, both are separate options, his nickname is 'Kintsugi' cause he and Time can be considered two different results of fate. If you are curious about what Kintsugi means, it's 'The Beauty of Imperfections.' A Japanese art of repairing pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with gold, silver and platinum.
The encounter will also happen post Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cause I love the potential chaotic shenanigans between four adopted siblings, their foster parents and literal godfather with this gaggle of Links. Especially when they're all under one roof. Plus the Wachowskis just being equally protective of the Chain.
Interactions would definitely include: parenting an adult more traumatized version of your son, kitchen mishaps via cooking lessons, Links being natural gremlins, Tails being a menace especially around magic, and a bunch of traumatized adults getting hugs (some might end up in a blanket burrito by Valion.)
That's all I have for now. Until next time folks, I'll see you back in Green Hills. I'll leave you with this new song from Sonic Frontiers, Vandalize by One Ok Rock.

i very much would love to hear you talk about windwaker,, like just anything about it no specific questions just go crazy (maybe about the game storyline or where it is in the tloz timeline or how the characters differ, just anything at all)
My brain has been activated so here's the explanation of the timeline leading up to Wind Waker and including the events of Wind Waker bc it is so cool to me. Warning for a REEEALLY long post!
If you'd like to know my sources, it's all from the games themselves, and the Hyrule Historia / Hyrule Encyclopedia books! Also 14-year-long brainrot.
------------
So in Ocarina of Time (yes that's a different game trust me), there are 2 possible outcomes. (Btw OOT/MM Link is the Hero of TIME and WW/PH Link is the Hero of WINDS. They all have different labels!)
In one of those outcomes, Link loses to Ganon and Hyrule is taken over. In this timeline, labeled the "failure timeline", zora are still fish people, but they attack and are enemies to Hyrule. There is also no Ganondorf (the human version), only Ganon (the monster version, which was made once Ganondorf used the Triforce) and he's like a walking, talking conscious pig for the most part. He won as Ganon in OOT, so why go back to being human you know? There are other big bads in some of those games but I don't have that timeline as memorized as the rest of the timeline(s).
The other outcome is what you see in the game, Link winning and Ganon being sealed in a pocket void in the Sacred Realm. Zelda sends Link back in time after defeating Ganon to let him live the childhood he missed, making this one outcome of the fight split into 2 other timelines.
One of them is Link's perspective, where he goes off the find Navi after she flies off at the end of OOT and the Hero of Time dies in Majora's Mask during his search. In this timeline, labeled the "child timeline", zora are still FRIENDLY fish people, and there is both a human Ganondorf and a Ganon that takes the form of a wild, more animalistic boar.
The other is the timeline Zelda now finds herself in. The Hero of Time defeated Ganon, sure, but now Hyrule is left without a hero. The Triforce of Courage is broken into 8 pieces because of Link's displacement in time. This is the "adult timeline" and where Wind Waker takes place.
Somehow, Ganondorf, the same one from OOT and now returned to his human form, was able to get back Hyrule and sought out the Triforce again. Its citizens prayed for the Hero of Time to come back, but he literally can't. King Daphnes gave up hope for the Hero of Time to return and left the fate of his kingdom in the hands of the gods.
The gods (Farore, Nayru and Din, the creators of the planet and Triforce) responded by telling the citizens to run to the mountains and flooding the kingdom, sealing away King Daphnes and Ganondorf (now only referred to as Ganon even tho he's human again?) with it. Princess Zelda (Tetra's mother) escaped to the surface with a chunk of the Triforce and passed it along to her child, who lived to be a pirate captain and wore it as a necklace.
Centuries pass and the Ganondorf underwater dies and is resurrected above the ocean (pretend I explained why he, Zelda, and Link keep being resurrected here), and one of his first acts was killing the Earth and Wind sages (Loruto the zora and Fado the kokiri), whose prayers help give the Master Sword its power. He also sent out one of his main minions, the Helmaroc King, to search for girls with pointed ears (anyone who could potentially be Princess Zelda / a royal descendant, and therefore holder of the Triforce.)
At this point in time, the zora and kokiri no longer exist. They had to evolve to adapt to the now flooded kingdom, and are now known as rito (bird people) and koroks (tree people).
(Before you ask why the zora evolved from fish people to bird people when Hyrule was flooded, the water was poisoned. Ganondorf even notes before the first of the two final battles that Hyrule's ocean "yields no fish to catch", despite being so massive. It should be noted that in Phantom Hourglass - the direct sequel to Wind Waker where Tetra and Link travel beyond Hyrule's ocean to establish a new kingdom - there is a fishing minigame. Fish do exist here, but it was impossible for them to exist in Hyrule's ocean. The kokiri just evolved over time.)
King Daphnes, dead for a long time now, puts his spirit into a boat, naming himself The King of Red Lions and searching for anyone who even had the potential to be the next hero. He eventually finds (Wind Waker) Link - who is on a mission to get his sister back from the Helmaroc King, and by association, Ganondorf (she had pointed ears, and was taken because she was potentially related to the royal family based on this characteristic).
The King gives up on his search for the hero of legend and asks Link to help him defeat Ganondorf, both to save Hyrule and to ensure his sister's safety. The two set out on a mission for Link to gather the 3 pearls representing the goddesses, meeting the deities that protect them, and seeing the effects of Ganondorf's growing power. Once he gathered all 3 pearls, Link gained access to the Tower of the Gods and proved himself worthy to enter the sunken kingdom of Hyrule, which is frozen in time.
Link gets the Master Sword, which is basically only a sword from being dormant so long and the Earth and Wind sages being... you know, dead. Hyrule quickly comes back to life since the Master Sword acted as a seal on the kingdom, and Link goes back to where his sister is held captive to fight Ganondorf again. Tetra, having met Link in the beginning of the game, makes sure all the captured girls are sent home safely and runs to help Link in his confrontation against Ganondorf. She fails, and Ganondorf realizes Tetra was the royal descendant he was looking for. They escape and return to Hyrule together to get some answers.
The King of Red Lions reveals himself to be King Daphnes to the children, and puts Tetra's remaining piece of the Triforce of Wisdom together with his. Tetra is given royal garb (and a new skin tone for some reason...) and realizes she is the next Princess Zelda. She's told to wait in the Master Sword's chamber until Link returns the Master Sword's power and gathers the broken pieces of the Triforce of Courage scattered across Hyrule, since they believed she would be safe in the castle's basement.
Link awakens Medli the rito and Makar the korok as the next Earth and Wind sages (each one obviously matching their descendants), and returns the Master Swords full power. With the 8 pieces of the Triforce of Courage back together, he returns to the sunken kingdom and Ganondorf reveals he has taken Zelda. Link breaks the seal preventing him from leaving the sunken kingdom with the Master Sword, and goes to fight Ganondorf.
After fighting a few of Ganondorf's minions, Link gains arrows of light, which would be used to fight against Ganondorf in both final battles.
Ganondorf - now seen with a Zelda who is dead asleep - gives Link one last test to prove that he is, in fact, the next hero of legend and would definitely have the Triforce of Courage. He knocks Link unconscious and takes both Zelda's and Link's Triforce pieces to bring Hyrule back to the surface and gain control.
King Daphnes steps in, and wishes for Hyrule to be washed away, and for the children (Link and Zelda) to be given hope and a future. The final seal on the kingdom, keeping it from being submerged in water, gives way. The kingdom begins to flood and be destroyed, not just be left trapped underwater. Link and Zelda wake up and team up against Ganondorf to kill him for good - which they do to the point that he just straight up doesn't reincarnate in that timeline anymore. (In Spirit Tracks, when Link and Zelda have already reincarnated, Ganondorf does not.)
Link and Zelda vow to the King that they would form a new kingdom, and are returned to the surface. Zelda is returned to Tetra, and King Daphnes' spirit finally dies. The game ends with Link, Tetra, and Tetra's pirate crew saying goodbye to Link's family and sailing off to find a place far, far away to build a new kingdom.
