"CANADA IS 'HOME' ΤΟ 135 IMMIGRANTS," Toronto Star. June 24, 1943. Page 3. ---- Canada became the official home of 135 foreign-born residents this week when they took the oath of allegiance to His Majesty the King. William Stangret, Parkham Ave., native of Poland, has lived here 16 years. He took the oath proudly.
Miss Helme Rahikka, native of Finland, has lived in Toronto for the past 13 years. "This is the happiest moment of my life," she exclaimed as she received her papers proclaiming her a Canadian citizen.
Private W. Strand, who has lived here 18 years, served with the Canadian Army before transferring to the Norwegian forces. A native of Norway, he went to school here. He wears a long service medal.
Tom Dorosh, native of Russia. came to Toronto 16 years ago. His father, brothers and sisters are fighting with the Russian forces. "I am happy to be a real Canadian if not exactly a new one," he said.

National Status of the Former (and Ongoing) British Empire
I've been doing research on the nationalities of all the former territories occupied, colonized, settled, controlled, or otherwise claimed by the British Empire. Short story: it's a mess.
But it also occurred to me in doing that that I couldn't find a good list of former colonies and territories that noted their status today (in Jan. 2024). So... here we are! I bet there are errors and I bet there are omissions, because – again – it's a MESS to get a clear picture of. And according to many legal historians and cultural studies scholars, that was and is on purpose.
Snapshots of those lists below -- but the full, and better-formatted version on my wordpress [because Tumblr didn't support the table I tried to make].

[* Denotes countries now in the Commonwealth of Nations.]
Again, I am sure there are issues here, as there have been contestations, debates, and challenges to the statuses of people born on land around the world that was once touched by British imperial boots.
For more on the CHAOS of those struggles, including the fundamental problem with establishing what “British nationality” even means, I highly recommend:
Ann Dummett and Andrew Nicol, Subjects, Citizens, Aliens and Others: Nationality and Immigration Law (London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1990).

Most magyar vagyok!
On November 2, 2023, I had my oath ceremony to become a Hungarian citizen. I learned about simplified naturalization in 2018, while working in Vienna and began looking into if I was qualified. Right after I moved to Budapest in September 2018, I started learning Hungarian at the CEU language school.
Since then, I've been working on-and-off towards this goal. From talking with my father and grandfather on the phone to learn about our family history, to calling what felt like a thousand Orthodox churches in PA to hunt down my last baptismal certificate, the journey has been hardwon. Admittedly not a morning person, I spent weeks getting up at 6 or 7 am for my 1-2x week Hungarian lessons. I practiced my grammar and speaking incessesantly on my own and with friends.
And after all that work, I finally get to call myself a Hungarian.
A huge thank you to my dad, who spent countless hours with me researching documents, ship manifestos, and family trees to get the paperwork in order. To my grandpa, for telling me about our Hungarian culture as a little kid. To Flora and Dora both, for proofreading everything, practicing with me and being my cheerleaders. And of course a huge thanks to the rest of my friends and family for their unceasing support and for not getting fed up as I spent years agonizing over all the details of my application.
It's truly a funny thing, when your dream becomes a reality.

biggest pet peeve in tha world is when fellow children of immigrants (who themselves were born in the states) refer to *themselves* as immigrants. like yes obviously your parents' immigration has immeasurably colored your upbringing and life but you yourself did not immigrate. like it just feels almost disrespectful in a weird way to equate your life (having been born in america) to the insane upheaval your parents went thru...
