how do you find stuff in your creek?

Hi Anon!

I just walk around and keep my eyes peeled for neat stuff! It's a pretty big creek and there are lots of large gravel bars all along it.

This creek runs across the back edge of my property and my neighbor beside me is very nice and she's fine with me exploring over on her part too so I've got about half a mile of creek I can hike around.

It usually floods pretty frequently (not uncommon for it to get up high enough where water would be over top of the Jeep in the above photo) so that always shifts the gravel bars around and uncovers new stuff to find. Here's a few in situ finds so you can see what they look like when I find them—some old tumbled bits of glass and pottery, a cow tooth, and a deer cannon bone.

I'll sift around in the gravel sometimes if I find one spot with a lot of stuff but usually I just pick up what I find on the surface.

You never know what will turn up down there! Tumbled glass and pottery, animal bones, fossils, tools, toys, farm stuff, fishing gear, found a big owl decoy one time, and I picked up a nice baseball bat the other day—just all sorts of random odds and ends wash in!

This little partial porcelain skull is still one of my all time favorite finds.
