Natasha gave a much-needed sigh of relief as she finally stepped onto solid ground, she never thought she’d ever be so happy to be home again. Nat had been sent away on a long deep-undercover mission and in total she had been away for about a month, however as of the nature of the mission, keeping in close-contact wasn’t possible. The only communication you received was via small hand-written letters, and they meant the world to you. though they were small you’d kept ahold of every one, keeping them safely tucked in your bedside drawer, re-reading them before you’d turn in to sleep each night.
Which is why you had been so excited for Nat’s return; you’d even deep cleaned your shared bedroom so everything would be perfect for her arrival. Nothing should’ve gone wrong. If only everything went how you’d planned...
~~~ ~~~
You’d gone to bed a little later that night, feeling a little more tired than usual, you wanted to have plenty of energy for tomorrow. That’s probably when you woke up that next morning, your body washed with fatigue and the feeling of a migraine settling in, you felt your eyes grow teary. How could this happen today? Of all days for you to get sick, why today?
No. You pulled yourself from the bed, as you stood a wave of dizziness fell over you, sending you scrambling to grip the bedpost to steady yourself, ignoring your body's cries to remain laying down. You gave yourself a moment to adjust before forcing yourself to remake the bed behind you. There was no time to be sick today.
You tried to sniffle, but you couldn’t. Now that you thought about it, you had been breathing through your mouth the whole morning. You twitched your nose and sniffled again, trying to get some air through your nose to no avail. You rolled your eyes, could today get any worse?
You regretted asking yourself that question a second later when you found yourself pulling off Nat’s red hoodie (the one you’d been sleeping in for the past week) feeling an uncomfortable warmth begin to settle over you. Maybe a shower would help, you thought before making your way over to your bathroom.
Stepping into the tiled room, you turned on your shower and waited for it to get warm, feeling dizzy again, you put your hands on the counter to steady yourself and looked up at the mirror. You felt yourself physically cringe at the sight. God, saying you looked awful would be a huge understatement, your eyes had dark circles beneath them, it looked like you hadn't slept in weeks.
The mirror slowly began to fog up, reminding you of the shower which was running behind you. Pulling open the door, you were hit by a cascade of warm steam. It felt amazing and you could feel your congestion start to loosen a little.
Only your delight lasted for a second, a familiar sensation creeping into the bridge of your nose. Stepping into the shower, you were only able to enjoy the feeling of the water briefly before the sensation in your nose grew to an irritating tickle.
“Hhup’tshiew! Hh-’iishiew! HHe’TSHHIEW!” Your body bent forwards at the waist as you sneezed down into your hands before washing them off under the water, you grimaced at the sound you made, knowing it was only the first of many to come. You sighed, your stuffiness returning in an instant, though you really didn’t get long to dwell on it before you began coughing into your fist.
It took you about 30 seconds to finally stop, “Well that was attractive.” You spoke for the first time today, finding your sarcastic tone had a painful-rasp to it, your consonants blurred by congestion. Although nobody was there to hear you, you found yourself cringing at the sound of yourself. Taking a deep breath, you could feel your chest crack, you looked upwards, allowing the water to fall directly onto your face. It was obvious today was going to be a very long day.
 You let yourself spend longer than usual in the shower, stepping out of the warm water, your body shivered and you rushed to wrap yourself within a towel. Getting changed was a task which proved harder than you thought, every time you removed the towel, small goosebumps ran down your arms, making your wrap yourself back up, desperate for warmth. Eventually though you managed to pull through and you changed into a pair of Nat’s sweatpants and a thick cotton-lined hoodie.
It was almost 10:30AM by the time you’d wandered down into the compound kitchen in search of something to eat, you weren’t necessarily hungry but still you had to eat something. Nat didn’t like it when you didn’t have something for breakfast plus you were hoping that if you ate something then you’d feel a little better.
Looking in the cupboards, you settled on having some Poptarts, you were reaching up to grab the box when Clint, Wanda and Bruce came into the kitchen together, they’d most likely just finished training.
“Morning Y/N.” Clint said cheerily as he came to sit at the island behind you, “Nat's coming home today.”
“I'm aware.” You said bluntly, as you sniffled into the sleeve of your hoodie, taking two Poptarts and putting them in the toaster.
“Woah, no need to get snappy.” Clint said throwing his hands up in fake-defence, you knew he was only joking but still, it pissed you off.
“Can yo-” You stopped to muffle a small chesty cough into your hoodie, “Can you just stop?” You said with an irritated tone, turning around to glare at him.
You half-expected him to return the gesture but instead you were met with looks of concern from him along with Wanda and Bruce who’d watched the whole thing unfold.
“Y/N, honey,” Wanda’s soft voice said as she came to lean against the fridge, trying to get a closer look at you, “Clint was only joking, he didn’t mean to annoy you. You're sounding a little stuffy over there though, you feeling alright?”
“It's okay,” You sighed, looking over to Clint, “Sorry, I overreacted and Wanda, I'm fine, don’t worry.”
It was then that you felt your nose begin to tingle again, you fanned your face for a moment, in an attempt to somehow stave the tickle off but it didn’t help, you turned quickly to the side away from everyone as you sneezed into your elbow.
“Hh-itshhiew! HhH’uptshiew!” You gave a small congested groan before reaching over to grab a tissue from the box sitting on the countertop.
The three Avengers blessed you, exchanging glances between themselves. You didn’t notice however, as your Poptarts were ready a moment later. You grabbed a plate and put them onto it, taking a bite, you winced as you swallowed, the action angering the soreness at the back of your throat. You realised then that you really weren't hungry at all, you took another few bites before pushing the plate away from you. You’d only managed half of one.
“It's not like you to leave food.” Bruce voiced the thoughts of everyone around you.
You gave a weak shrug and pushed the plate infront of Clint, “You can finish it if you want.”
He was about to take a bite of your half-eaten one when Wanda pushed it away mid-air, a red glow forming around it.
“If Y/N’s sick, you don’t wanna catch that.” She him chided lightly.
“Who said Im sick?” You looked over to her as you began to walk out from the kitchen, “I just happened to leave some food unfinished, that doesn’t mean Im sick, does it?” You said grumpily as you left.
Wanda shook her head and shrugged at the others before following you out into the corridor, jogging up so she could walk aside you, following your lead as you made your way towards the lounge.
“Mind if I tag along?” She asked politely, “You really don’t seem yourself today, did something happen with you and Nat? You’re normally buzzing with excitement every time she comes home.”
“Nothing happened Wands,” You stopped walking, suddenly sneezing down into your hand, “I can't wait for her to come home obviously. Im just a little tired or something.”
Wanda blessed you but gave you an uneasy look, she didn’t believe you but seeing how you’d gotten irritated at Clint earlier, she didn’t want to accidently annoy you.
You and Wanda made your way into the lounge, settling on opposite sofas. You pulled a blanket around yourself, your hoodie doing little to keep you warm. You let Wanda pick something to watch, you didn’t really care, all you wanted was something to take your mind off the mind-numbing ache in your head.
“Is Brooklyn-Nine-Nine alright?” She asked as she browsed through Netflix.
“I don’t mind.” You sniffled, burying your head into the blanket as you coughed deeply, the noise causing Wanda to look over at you with worried eyes.
“You sound terrible.” She said as the intro to the series began to play.
 Looking up at her, it was obvious she was concerned, “Just something in my throat.” You grumbled, your voice coming out in crackled, raspy words rather than a flowing sentence, “Its fin- h- Hh'tshhiEW!”
Wanda wordlessly got up and picked up the box of tissues from the coffee table in the centre of the living room and placed them firmly next to you, ignoring your glare. You couldn't help but feel weak, if you couldn’t hide your little cold from Wands, how on earth were you meant to hide it from Natasha.
You and Wanda sat in silence for 2 episodes before you felt your nose begin to run causing you to begin sniffling repeatedly, it was then that you found yourself being thankful for her prior act, taking 2 tissues to blow your nose, you mentally thanked her, giving her a brief smile.
Wanda looked over to you, she’d heard your thoughts and gave you a kind reassuring smile.
You didn’t know it, but you were slowly falling asleep, your eyes growing heavier by the minute. You looked up to the clock on the wall, it was almost 12PM, meaning Nat would be home in afew hours. You yawned, maybe you’d just close your eyes for a minute...
~~ ~~
Stepping off the Quinjet, Natasha could barely contain herself, finally she’d be able to see you! She didn’t waste any time, leaving the Quinjet loaded and her bags at the exit. She could clean up later, she had to see you first.
She practically jogged down the halls towards your bedroom, expecting to find you waiting for her.
“Im home bab-” She called out but stopped, realising the room was empty, she did notice how tidy it looked though, well except the random towel in the middle of the floor, but apart from that the room was almost spotless.
Nat stopped to think for a moment before realising you were probably with the other Avengers, she said hello to Clint as she poked her head into the kitchen, scanning the room for you.
“They’re with Wanda, in the lounge.” Clint called, answering her unasked question as he wiped down the countertops, cleaning up after himself.
Nat thanked him before actually jogging towards the living room, she swung the door open and smiled seeing both you and Wanda sitting on the sofas.
She was about to call out to you but stopped, seeing Wanda put a finger to her lips. She stood up and came over to Nat, pulling her outside.
“What's up?” Nat asked, visibly confused at the witch’s actions.
“I thought you should know, Y/N’s sick, they sounded dreadful earlier. They fell asleep about 3 hours and have barely moved an inch.” She explained, “Im glad you’re back though, how was it?”
“It was alright, I missed everyone though.” Nat smiled and hugged her friend, “Thanks for telling me about Y/N too.”
“Don't mention it.” Wanda smiled and left to go do something, allowing Nat to greet you privately.
Natasha came back into the lounge, carefully coming to kneel infront of the sofa you were asleep on, “Hey baby.” She whispered, as she softly stroked your cheek, she recoiled her hand, instantly alarmed at the heat radiating from your face, “Wakey, wakey sweetie.”
It took some more love from Nat before you slowly began to wake up, moaning softly as your eyes adjusted to the light in the room, you rubbed your wrist against your eyes as the image of Nat came into focus.
“Did you have a nice nap baby?” She asked, helping you sit up.
“Natty.” Your voice cracked as you spoke, sending you into a small fit of deep coughing. Only this time you had Nat to softly rub her hand down your back, “Sorry, something got caught in my throat there, when did you get back?”
“About 10 minutes ago, when did you get sick?” She raised her eyebrow at you as you woozily stood up, quickly offering her arm out to support you.
“What do you mean?” You asked, resisting the urge to sniffle. If there was anytime you needed your acting abilities to be flawless, it was now. You had a pretty rocky start but you could still make up for it.
Nat gave you a curious look, “Wanda said you were sick?” Her words came as more of a question then a statement.
“Oh.” You feigned surprise as you tried to discreetly clear your throat, “Well Im fine, never better.” You flashed her a small forced smile.
‘Fine’ is probably the most misused word in the whole of the English language, you most certainly were not fine, even as you stood still it felt as if the room was spinning around, you but you did your best to act as if nothing was wrong.
Now Natasha knew you were lying, it was obvious from your appearance alone, your eyes were tired and glassy, not to mention both your cheeks and nose were tinged red. But still, she was impressed at your perseverance, maybe that was why she went along with your scheme. She wanted nothing more than to wrap you up in her hands with tissues and a blanket but she just wanted to see how long it’d take for you to give in.
“Maybe Wanda was wrong then.” Nat smiled at you knowingly, “You wanna go out for drinks later?”
 You wanted to cry, you wanted nothing more than to go out for drinks with Nat but you knew there’d be no way you’d be going, “Sure, sounds nice, Im really happy you’re home ‘Tasha. I missed you so so mu-” Your trailed off, feeling the ever-present tickle in your nose grow. Not now.
“Hhu’tshhiew! Hep’TSHHIEW!”
“Oh bless you, my love.” Nat cooed, holding back the plethora of concerned words which were about to tumble from her mouth, “I thought you said you weren't sick?”
“Im not,” You stammered, quickly rubbing the sleeve of your hoodie against your nose, “It was just two -Hh- rando- Hh'iishiew!- random sneezes, its nothing.” You sniffled wetly, reaching for the box of tissues which was still sat on the sofa behind you.
Natasha was stuck. Her heart broke seeing you sick but she really was curious how long you would deny it for, she thought for a moment, if you got any of worst then she’d take matters into her own hands.
“Have you eaten yet?” You asked, even through your fever, her welfare was still at the top of your mind.
“No, but I could use a drink though.” She fibbed, hearing the rasp behind your voice, it was clear you needed water.
“M’Kay, we should go get you one then.” You mumbled, linking your arm with hers as you both left the lounge to go to the kitchen.
Entering the kitchen, you let yourself sit down on one of the stools at the island as Nat grabbed two glasses from the cupboards, pouring water into each.
“Here baby.” She said lovingly, sliding it over to you.
You thanked her and drank it, the cool water feeling amazing against the burning of your throat, “Did you already unpack?”
“Not yet,” She replied, sipping her water, “I’ll do it later.”
“You need a hand?” You offered, praying she’d decline your offer, you really weren't too confident in your lifting abilities at the moment.
“Aw thanks baby but I think I’ll be okay.”
You sat silently, waiting for Nat to finish her water when you started sniffling, feeling your nose begin to run again. You eyed up the tissues on the counter opposite, but grabbing them would be an instant sign to Nat that something was wrong so you opted for trying to discreetly rub your nose against your hoodie.
However, the action only seemed to irritate your nose further, sending an intense tingle to the bridge of your nose.
“Hh’k-tshhiew! Heh’iiishiew! Hh..H..HHitsshiew!”
“Bless you, bless you!” She exclaimed, her worry slipping into her tone as she spoke, “You need a tissue?”
You nodded, as you swiped a handful from the box which she offered out to you. You blew your nose softly, though it did little to ease your discomfort. You sighed, fanning your hand infront of your face, feeling that familiar warmth from earlier that morning come over you again.
You tried to ignore it, but it slowly became unbearable, you raised your arms, pulling off the cotton hoodie, revealing your black sports bra.
Natasha looked over you, puzzled, before noticing that your fever-flushed cheeks had darkened further. Right. This had gone too far now.
She firmly pressed her palm to your forehead without warning, letting out a string of curses in Russian as she felt your raging fever.
“Shit, Y/N. You feel like a furnace. Enough, I know you’re sick, I’ve known the whole time, it's gone too far now.”
What? Her words barely formed coherent sentences in your foggy mind, how did she know? You’d hidden it so well. Small beads of sweat began to form and run down your hot skin and you groaned in discomfort, longing for her love.
“Natty-” You spluttered off into a series of deep coughs, your chest convulsing as you coughed down into your elbow. Natasha had rushed to your side and began running circles down your back, slowly helping you regain your breath.
“Baby I don’t feel good.”
“I know sweetie, I know.” Nat kissed your cheek before grabbing a tissue to wipe your running nose, “You need to get into bed, come on.”
You nodded and opened her hand out towards you.
You stood and the world span around you, your peripheral vision fading black suddenly as your knees buckled under yourself and you felt the weight of gravity pull you down. You thought you were going to hit the ground when sudden you felt yourself being lifted upwards. Natasha’s fast reaction had allowed her to slip one arm beneath your knees and another behind your back, safely catching you in her arms as you lifted you up in the bridal position.
She held you for a moment before releasing a deep exhale, “Jesus Y/N. You scared the shit out of me, don’t ever do that again,” She brought her head and pressed it softly against yours, “Poor baby, you’ve been so strong but we need to get you to bed now, okay?”
You nodded woozily, Natasha continued to whisper sweet nothings to you as she carried you, her strong arms supporting you. Your eyes fell closed for a moment and the next thing you knew, you were being lowered down onto your bed, Natasha’s anxious green eyes looking down at you.
“I guess we’re not going out for drinks then?” Your words were mumbled but you saw her give a slight smirk at your humour.
“No baby, we’ll go out when your well.”
“Sorry your first day back was so eventful, I wanted you to be able to relax.” You sighed, with a damp sniffle, rubbing your nose against the blanket which Nat had pulled over you.
“You’re okay baby, you’ve done so much today. You just need to relax yourself, just lay here. That fever of yours is no joke, you need to rest.”
Natasha opened your drawer, seeing if you had a thermometer at hand, what she wasn’t expecting to see though was her letters, “You kept these?” She asked, her eyes prickled with tears. She hadn't expected you to keep them, her mission had been hard and seeing her letters only reminded her of how much she’d missed you.
“They remind me of you so I wanted to keep them.” Your words were slurred but she understood you anyway.
She honestly wasn’t sure why she thought you wouldn’t keep them. Seeing them lit a little flame in her heart, she leant down to your side and planted a soft kiss on your lips, “I’ll never leave you again baby, okay? Im here.”
You muffled another deep cough into the blanket as Nat regained her composure, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes. She came and slid into bed beside you, sitting upright. You shuffled backwards so you were laying on her, your head on her chest, listening to the steady beating of her heart as she softly ran her hand through your hair.
“Everything’s gonna be okay.”
Everythings gonna be okay
Pairing: Scarlett x you
Words: 2078
Warnings: none that I know of
Summary: You and Scarlett had recently broken up. When you go to her house to pick up the last of your things, you see that she was nowhere to be found. Despite your better judgment, you decide to go and investigate. The sight that greets you all but breaks your heart.
Tumblr media
You let out a near silent curse when you ring the doorbell for the third time and receive no answer. All you wanted to do was grab the rest of your things. You'd taken most of it the day you'd both decided to end things, but there were a few heavier items -such as your desktop computer- that you were unable to take with you due to the sheer size and weight.
Using your key was a last resort, something you didn't want to have to do unless it was absolutely necessary because, as much as it breaks your heart to admit, you weren't her girlfriend anymore. You couldn't just come and go as you please. That privileges was out the window the second you'd broken up.
But apparently you didn't have a choice, because the longer you stand here, the more evident it becomes that she wasn't going to answer the door. Your key slides into the lock with that same familiar ease, and your eyes take in the familiar sight of her entry way as you tentatively push open the door and step inside.
It looked the exact same, except for the light layer of dust lining each and every surface. Weird. Scarlett was, in the most polite way possible, a clean freak. She liked order and often became grumpy when things were even the slightest bit out of place.
You go to blame it on her just being busy, but the sight in the living room immediately halts you in your tracks. There were tissues everywhere, and there was that slight smell in the air of sweat and just overall sickness. You hate the fact that your stomach sinks in concern, because there was only one rational thing that could explain this.
Scarlett was sick, and had obviously been so for quite some time.
You couldn't help but freeze on the bottom of the staircase in a silent debate on whether or not you should go up. The part of you that was still very much in love with her wanted nothing more than to take care of her. But the ugly part of you, the one who was still so hateful over the ugly breakup wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of here.
She'd been the one to distance herself. She'd been the one to not make time for you, and she'd been the one who'd told you to pack your things and get the hell out of her sight. Why should you repay that with kindness? Because you loved her, that's why. And despite the fact she'd broken your heart, the last thing you wanted was to see her suffer.
It wasn't like you. It never had been, and it never would be.
With a defeated sigh, you grasp the hand rail and begin to ascend the long staircase. You make it to the top in no time, and find yourself hesitating for only a short second before making your way down the hall towards the bedroom you'd once called your own.
You stand there like an idiot for what feels like forever before you finally find the courage in you to grasp the handle, and and as you push down, that same smell that had greeted you downstairs, only a little more intensified, was quick to fill your nostrils.
Scrunching up your nose in slight disgust, you enter the room and softly close the door behind you.
The curtains were closed encasing the room in a heavy darkness, but that doesn't stop you from being able to make out Scarlett's small figure laying in the centre of the large bed. You warily make your way over, and the first things you notice were the red tinged nose and quiet snores escaping her slightly parted lips. Her skin was pale, but her cheeks were flushed, signalling she had quite the fever, and you notice her body was trembling almost violently.
Before you could stop yourself, your hand was reaching out and brushing away the sweaty strand hair that had fallen into her face. That action almost immediately rouses her, and you wince slightly as her eyes blearily flicker open.
"Hi," you murmur, tentatively perching yourself on the end of the bed. "You're sick."
Scarlett furrows her eyebrows, almost as though she couldn't quite believe you were here. Her eyes, glassy from the fever induced haze were bloodshot, pupils huge telling you that she hadn't been getting very much sleep.
Her trembling hand reaches out for you, and you only hesitate briefly before taking it, the pad of your thumb instinctively grazing over the almost too warm skin.
Then, without any warning, her eyes fill with tears, her bottom lip trembles, and she was letting out a stifled sob before attempting to sit up. You frown in concern as you scoot yourself a little closer, leaning forward and slipping an arm beneath her body before tugging her to your chest. She lets out wet, gravely sounding cough when her sobs catch in her throat, and you wince at the painful sound as you use your other hand to cup the back of her head.
"It's okay," you murmur into her hair, "you're okay. I'm here. I've got you."
Scarlett let's out a choked sob as she shakes her head, and you let out a soft, defeated sigh as you hold her as close as you could. She smelt less than pleasant, so you knew once of your tasks today would be getting her into the shower.
This was the last thing you'd expected to happen. If you were being completely honest with yourself, you'd expected her to be mad for invading her space. To tell you to go away just as she'd done no more than a week ago. A part of you still expects that to happen, because you knew this whole emotional mess was just her fever talking. She didn't actually want you here, but you couldn't just leave her to cry.
You hold her close for a few silent moments before easing her body back down onto the bed, bringing your hands up to cup her cheeks. "I'm going to get you some medicine, okay?" You gently wipe away the tears with the pads of your thumbs.
Scarlett's trembling hands reach to grasp your wrists, almost as though she was silently pleading to you to not let go.
Her touch sends shivers throughout your whole entire body, and you just about manage to refrain from pulling yourself of her her grasp as you force the corners of your lips into a small smile.
"It's okay," you reassure, "I'll be back."
Thankfully, though she visibly hesitates, Scarlett does let you go, and you try and make your breath of relief as subtle as possible as you make your way through to the bathroom. In here was just as, if not worse than her bedroom, and you make a mental note to give it a thorough clean before you leave as you grab the Tylenol and cough medicine from the cabinet.
When you make your way back through to her bedroom with your arms full, you notice that Scarlett was now sat up against the headboard of her bed. She appears to be staring into space, and your lips quirk up at the corners in slight adoration as you climb in next to her.
"Here," you murmur, pouring the correct dose of cough medicine into the small plastic cup before handing it over. Her trembling hand takes it, and she sniffles wetly as she tilts it back and swallows with only a slight grimace. You ignore the urge you have to praise her as you hand over the Tylenol and water, watching as Scarlett repeats the same steps as before.
This time, however, she must have swallowed wrong, because she begins to cough forcefully into her hands. You watch her, eyebrows furrowed in concern as you reach out to steadily pat her back.
"Take a deep breath, you're okay." You sooth, and Scarlett nods, trying her best to comply despite the fact she seems to be unable to catch her breath. Her chest heaves with each ragged exhale, and her already flushed cheeks taking on an even darker shade of red signalling not enough oxygen was getting into her lungs. You were forced to swallow the tightness in your own throat.
"Scarlett, breath." You instruct as you reach to grab the bottle of the water from the nightstand, your hand still firmly patting her back. Scarlett attempts to let out a hoarse breath, but she does no more than choke further.
By now, panicked tears were streaming down her cheeks, and you could feel your own heart beginning to pound. Hauling her body into your arms, you lay her down on her side and raise her arms above her head. You lay behind her propped up on your elbow, resting your hand against her heaving chest and rubbing firmly.
"You're okay. I'm here. You're okay." You sooth, pressing a tender kiss against the side of her head.
Scarlett let's out another wet cough before somehow managing to catch her breath, and it was only then does let out a soft sob. With tears in your own eyes, you tug her around to face you and pull her against your chest. You hold her as close as you could, your hand grazing soothing circles up and down her back. Your other hand cups the back of her head, fingers combing through her tangled tresses.
"I-I don't.. don't feel w-well." She chokes out as she desperately clutches at your shirt, and you nod as you press your lips against the top of her head.
"I know baby." You murmur, "I know."
She stifles another sob against you at the nickname, and you instinctively tighten your grasp around her. You hadn't meant to say it. It had just slipped out because that was all you ever used to call her. She's your baby. Or well, she was. You feel your throat tighten at the thought, and you swallow heavily to refrain from bursting into tears as you hold Scarlett close.
A comfortable silence soon falls upon you with the exception of her slightly hoarse breathing, and it wasn't long until you feel Scarlett fall limp against you signalling she'd fallen asleep.
*
A few hours later, you find your self sat in the bathroom with your back to the tub. Scarlett was curled up in the water, sniffling softly as the hot water clears her congestion. Not a word had been spoken since earlier, but the silence surrounding you wasn't awkward. It was almost...comforting, which was surprising considering the circumstances.
But the silence doesn't last for long.
"I'm sorry." A quiet murmur.
You turn your head slightly, seeing the bare skin of her back from your peripheral vision, "For what? Getting sick? That's not your fault."
Scarlett sniffles softly, "No, not for that. For...for what happened. A week ago." She explains, her voice trailing off into a soft, trembling murmur.
You let out a soft breath as you twist a loose thread hanging off of your jeans around your finger, "You don't have to apologise. What happened, happened. It's in the past."
Everything was silent again, but the shuddering breath that escapes from Scarlett's lips does not  go amiss. It has you turning to face her, and your heart breaks when you see her crying silently. Tears were streaming down her cheeks, and her bottom lip was trembling as though she was trying to hold back the onslaught of sobs.
"Scarlett..." you trail off, not knowing what to say.
Her lips quirk up into a sad smile as she wipes off her cheeks, "It's okay." She whispers.
With a soft sigh, you shift to your knees and lean forward to press a kiss to the warm skin of her forehead. As you pull away, you raise a hand to cup her cheek, the pad of your thumb grazing softly over her skin. "We'll talk. When you're better. Okay?"
"Okay." Scarlett murmurs, reaching up to cover your hand with her own.
“Heh’nxgt!”
You opened your eyes groggily at the sound, not being fully awake yet you almost fell asleep again before hearing something again.
“h’nxgt! hhgxnt!”
Oh. That’s what woke you up. Even though Nat was trying to make her sneezes as quiet as possible, it was really hard to do so when she was this sick. Your girlfriend came home that night complaining about her “allergies”, however, as her temperature rose there was no denying that she was coming down with a bad cold, so you both decided to go to bed earlier so she could try and sleep it off.
“Hhhxxnt! Heh’kshuu!” As the redhead’s sneezes became more desperate, it was obvious that the whole “sleeping it off” plan wasn’t working, so you decided to address the elephant in the room.
“Natty, are you alright darling?” You asked, turning on your bedside lamp and rolling over to face her.
Her hands were covering her face, and she was avoiding meeting your gaze.
“heh'eeshoo!! I’b fide hodey- h’nxgt! Hhk'kiktShIEw!” Her eyes widened after that last sneeze and you knew exactly what she needed. Wordlessly, you got up and brought her the tissue box that was in your en-suite bathroom.
She gave you a relieved look and blew her nose thickly, apologizing immediately about the situation.
“Y/N I’m so sorry, that was disgusting and-“
“It’s okay Nat, you’re sick and this happens sometimes. It’s not “disgusting”, it’s natural.” You said lovingly, grabbing the trashcan and placing it by her side of the bed so she could throw her tissues away.
“It’s just that…. I didn’t wanted you to see me this way.” She said, tears filling her eyes, that combined with the red flush on her cheeks warned you that she might have a fever.
You pressed the back of your hand to her forehead, confirming your suspicions.
“You’re so warm… stay put while I get the thermometer.” You did as you said, getting the device alongside some water, tylenol and a bottle of NyQuill.
Thankfully, Natasha didn’t put up a fight with you about having her temperature checked, and you both sat in silence while you waited for the verdict.
“39.2 Natty, that’s too high.” You sighed, pouring her a dose of the purple liquid.
She took the medicine and the pills without complaining, which proved that she was really out of it. Nat has always been stubborn about being cared for.
“H’iishoo! Heh’kshuu! Ugh! Sorry about being so gross.”
You grabbed her hands (making a mental note to wash them later) and made sure she was looking at you, she needed to hear this.
“Natasha, sweetie, love of my life, first of all bless you. Second is that you shouldn’t be embarrassed about it, this is okay, it happens to everyone. And even though you like to think that you are an invincible machine, you. are. human. and humans get sick sometimes. That’s why I’m here. To be with you no matter what. In sickness and health.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks, she’s never felt more loved. The way that you looked at her as if she was a runaway model even when she looked like a zombie made her know that she was safe with you.
“Isn’t that phrase for married couples?” She said, smiling even while crying.
“It is babe, ‘cause that’s what we’re going to be some day.” You said, hugging her and running your fingers through her hair.
“I love you Y/N, thank you for being here with me.”
“I’ll always be.”
🤧🤚 from the Valentine’s list for natasha please
Thank you for sending this in, and I hope you enjoy! <3
(Sorry if it comes out a bit choppy. I started it before Valentine’s Day and wrapped it up now.)
———————————————————————-
Changing Plans
This was it. Your first Valentine's Day with Natasha. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t nervous, though. You’d been gathering “intel” from the other Avengers about Natasha’s likes, dislikes, and general feelings about the holiday of love in preparation. You had been dating for about a year, so you wanted to make this first Valentine’s Day really special.
Natasha didn’t do holidays. Not really. But, there was something different about what you and Natasha had; something that might just last. You were going all-in to show that to her. You’ve always been a bit of a romantic.
You figured out rather quickly that despite Natasha working closely with all of the Avengers for years, they still didn’t know much about her. They told you about her favorite flowers, but you already knew that answer. Natasha tended to hold private information close, but you were slowly breaking through that wall she had built. It was a process that you were happy to be patient with.
Of course you also had a conversation with Natasha about Valentine's Day. She seemed apathetic about the holiday but not opposed to festivities. You took it as a green light...
...
You stepped back and looked around at the decorations… So you went a bit overboard with the planning. What can you say? You wanted a romantic evening with the Black Widow.
The living room, dining room, and bedroom had been transformed into one giant metaphorical Valentine’s Day explosion. There were red hearts everywhere and red rose petals lining their way towards the bedroom. You had a heart-shaped box of chocolates on the living room table. Next to it were two large bouquets of red roses and a bouquet of pink lilies.
It was all planned out. Thanks to Pepper and her connections, you were able to reserve a spot in the new fancy restaurant that had just been built with a skyline view. That’s where you’d begin your evening: with a romantic dinner looking out over the city. From there, you had planned a short walk through the park. It was a place both of you liked to go to get a clear head and also happens to be where the two of you met. The park would always hold a special place in your heart.
After your walk, you planned to bring her back to the tower to enjoy the setup that you had constructed at her apartment. There was no way to avoid her seeing the decorations beforehand, but that was okay.
At the end of the day, you loved any and all the time you could spend with Natasha.
You sighed, content with the results of your decorating. The sound of a key scrape had you heading to the door. As soon as the door opened you were all smiles.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Natasha,” you said and gave her a hug. You gave her a quick peck on the cheek as you parted from the embrace.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, (Y/N),” Natasha said, returning your smile. She sniffled softly and swiped at her nose.
You closed the door behind her and led her into the living room. Natasha took in the scene.
“Oh, it’s beautiful! You know you didn’t have to do all of this, though, right?”
You shrugged and smoothed out a wrinkle in your evening formal-wear. “I know, but I wanted to do something extra special. I love you everyday, but today it’s socially acceptable to practically shout it from the rooftops just how much I love you.” You couldn’t help it as your cheeks turned a bit pink. For a second you thought you really might’ve done too much.
Natasha set down her mission bag and gently placed a hand on your cheek. “It’s perfect, and you look incredible.”
You believed the sincerity in her eyes. You sighed, relieved, and smiled with a hint of a blush.
“You deserve perfect,” you leaned in and kissed her.
“So,” you said when you pulled away, “we have reservations in an hour, which is just enough time for you to shower and get ready.”
Natasha sniffled again, “sounds good. I’ll go--” She cut herself off with a sneeze.
Hih hngt-shoo! She had bent away from you bringing the back of her hand up to her nose.
“Bless you, Natasha,” you said, a bit surprised.
She sniffled a few more times and shook her head. “Thanks.. I’ll go shower.” And she took off towards the bathroom.
You watched as she walked away, her steps a bit stiffer than normal. Not to mention Natasha rarely sneezed, and when she did, it was almost always completely silent.
The sound of the shower brought you out of your thoughts, only you grew more concerned a few moments later when the sound of two less-restrained sneezes could be heard over the fan and running water. That was her body's tell.
Oh. Natasha’s unwell.
“Right,” you said quietly to yourself. You put your hands on your hips and looked around at the room. Natasha was known for her quick showers, so you had to prepare quickly. If Natasha wasn't well, then what you both needed was each other and a night in. Not the events that you had planned.
So you went about scooping up all of the rose petals, red hearts, flowers, and chocolate. You put the water on to boil as you went and changed into comfier clothing. You also swapped out the outfit Natasha had laid out for herself in exchange for pajamas. Extra blankets and pillows were then deposited onto the sofa just as the kettle on the stove started to whistle.
With a quick jog to the stove, you turned off the burner and poured the hot water into two cups for tea. As you moved the steaming cups to the coffee table, you heard the shower shut off. You checked the time. It had taken Natasha longer than average to shower. She was definitely coming down with something.
The last items of preparation that you needed to do involved a quick phone call to the restaurant to cancel the reservation and a quick apology text to Pepper that you regrettably wouldn’t be going tonight.
Natasha came out of the bedroom still walking a bit stiffly but looking much more relaxed. She sniffled again as she came towards you. You opened up your arms, and she melted into them.
“How’d the mission go,” you asked her quietly.
“Fine. We did what we had to do. It got a little messy, though.”
You hummed in acknowledgement and ran your hand up and down her back. “Well, how about we get under these blankets and relax with a movie? How’s that sound?”
Rather than responding, Natasha brought a hand up around your back and held her knuckles under her nose. Natasha sniffled just before her breath hitched. Hih -- hiiih hngt-shoo... t’schhhoo!
“Bless you, bless you!”
“Sorry,” Natasha mumbled between sniffles.
You kissed the side of her head before stepping out of the hug and grabbing the nearest box of tissues.
“Here,” you said and held the box out. When she took them, you guided her to the sofa and sat down.
You positioned yourself so she would be able to lay back into you. “C’mere,” you said as she leaned back.
“What about the -- mmmmmmh -- reservation?” She asked. A low moan slipped out of her lips as your palms began working slow circles across her back.
“Don’t worry about that. Tonight is still all about you and us. But I get to take care of you and make you feel better.” You leaned forward and kissed the top of her head for a long moment.
“Happy Valentine’s, Nat.”
“Happy Valentine’s, (Y/N).”
this does contain black widow spoilers! I will probably make a part 2.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Natasha hung up the phone on Ross and stared at herself in the mirror, before taking her hair out of the bun. You had just finished putting your hair up in a ponytail after stealing a hair tie from some lady (she’d had three and she wouldn’t miss one... hopefully).
“We’ll be long gone by the time he even begins to think about where we might go,” you muttered.
“And hopefully in a warmer, comfier place,” your girlfriend grumbled in response, sniffling and clearing her throat.
“You don’t sound very good either,” you observed, cautiously keeping your tone on the nonchalant side- it wasn’t like there was really anything you could do anyway. You were on the run, currently on a long boat ride to Norway, and on top of barely sleeping, the air was damp and cool- the perfect combination for a cold, which you were fairly certain Nat had caught.
She shrugged, pulling on her sweatshirt. “I’m fine.”
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes. That’s what she always said. Before you got the chance to respond, Nat was heading towards the door, with you right behind her. Sweeping your eyes around at the cars and people, you both made your way towards the back of the boat, leaning against the edge and watching the choppy water below.
It was already much colder out in the open air with the wind blowing with an unforgiving bite and you found yourself shivering. Because your girlfriend was so protective in every way, she moved closer, one hand rubbing up and down your back while the other rubbed your arm. It still wasn’t enough and you moved even closer, enjoying the chuckle that fell from Nat’s lips when she realized what you wanted. Moving to stand behind you, her arms encircled your waist and you relaxed back against her. You knew it gave her as much warmth as it gave you.
You could hear her frequent sniffles much better now, her face nearly buried in the crook of your neck. You would have pressed her further on the issue of her health, but there wasn’t anything you could do.
“H’htschoo! ‘tschioo!”
You could barely hear over the roar of the water and if it weren’t for her sudden movement away from you, you would have missed the quiet, quick sneezes all together.
“Bless you,” you acknowledged, turning to see your girlfriend running her sleeve under her nose.
“Thanks.” Natasha retook her position, congestion now behind every sniffle.
“We should go sit inside,” you suggested a few minutes later. You could practically sense her scowl at your concern, but she must have been feeling worse than she let on, for she didn’t disagree, but rather, turned it into a joke.
“Why? Losing your touch?”
You laughed, shaking your head and turning around in her arms. “Maybe.”
“Okay, let’s go inside.”
Taking her outstretched hand, already missing the warmth her body provided, you made your way towards the door, wondering how much longer you’d have like this until Nat would need a warmer place to rest.
Rekindled Love
Oh my god. This fic. I love it so much. Lil bit of angsty ex’s to lovers. It turns so soft at the end though! Hopefully everyone enjoys, please let me know what you think ;)
Summary; Natasha Romanoff was your ex. The mere sight of her on its own was enough to piss you off but after finding her alone, it became obvious that maybe your love for her hadn’t ever truly gone away.
Wordcount: 2550
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Your relationship with Natasha was well… It was rocky to say the least. The both of you could silently sit in a room together and yet still find a way to piss each other off. That’s probably why your previous relationship with her had ended with a hell of a lot of screaming and tears. You supposed had felt love for her at one point but now, even just looking at her was enough to cause a pit of anger to boil in your stomach.
You would’ve been more then happy to have never spoken to her ever again. Not after what happened. But it wasn’t just like you could get up and leave. Your friends were here in New York and more-importantly so was your job. You were still an Avenger after all.
It was that your role as an Avenger which had resulted in you meeting Natasha in the first place. You’d been sent on a mission together all those years ago. The mission which had started everything. The mission which had set a train track for your love. There had once been a time where you two had become inseparable. Soulmates. And through the blood, sweat and tears, the pair of you had fallen hard for each other along the way, going on to morph into the Avengers greatest strategic fighting duo. What was that old saying again? The bigger they are they harder they fall? Well you’d both fell pretty damn hard alright, the painful-irony of your situation wasn’t lost on you either.
The team had done their best to keep the two of you separated for the main part but alas. You lived in the same building, you were bound to run into each-other in one way or another. There was a constant overhanging tension whenever the pair of you had to be together, it was suffocating. Your fuse was at its end. That was probably why you had snapped so hard at her that day.
You hummed as you walked through the hall down towards the training room. You had been completely in your own world when suddenly you felt the stumble of a body knocking straight into your chest. You scowled, recognising that fiery hair anywhere.
“Fuck Natasha, watch where you’re going.” You hissed aggressively as she stumbled backwards, looking stunned. She had sweat dripping down her face, obviously having just finished a workout of her own.
Natasha scoffed snapping back around to look at you with angry eyes, “How about you watch it. It’s not my fault that you’re in the way.” She grumbled before turning her head away to discreetly clear her throat.
Her statement infuriated you, “Get over yourself Natash-“
You were just about ready to rip into her when she had interrupted you, turning her as she muffled a chesty painful-sounding cough into her upper-sleeve. If you hadn’t had been so pissed at her then maybe you would’ve been slightly concerned for her.
Though you were mad, you couldn’t quite force yourself to lay into her for simply coughing, instead you gave a loud huff and continued, “Get over yourself, it was your fault Romanoff. You walked into me. Accept it. Now go shower or something.”
“Get out of my way then.” Nat growled as she shoved past you, however to your surprise,, her shove had been weak. It was barely enough force to move you aside, certainly not a show of strength from the ‘Black Widow’. Plus you had been pretty sure that you’d seen her stumble afterwards from the corner of your eye. Weird…
Whatever. It was none of your business, not that you cared anyway. You had a workout to attend too. You simply rolled your eyes and reached into your pocket to pull out your headphones before making your way towards the training room.
And roughly an hour or so later you had finished your workout. Punching things had always made you feel somewhat better, it was something about the release of pent-up energy that calmed you down. All you needed now was a shower and a good lunch to fill you up. Maybe then you’d be able to enjoy the rest of your day in peace, especially with tonights movie night.
The Avengers held movie nights weekly, Tony thought it was something which brought the team together and well he wasn’t wrong. It was the one time where all problems were left at the door and people were able to fully enjoy their night. Of course there was always tension between you and Nat but it always seemed a little less on these nights. To keep things fair, movies were picked by a different team member every week and tonight was your night.
You had been lost in thought, trying to think of a good pick as you made your way into the changing room. You lifted up your arms and pulled off your sweaty vest-top, throwing in onto a bench before going over to your locker and pulling out a fresh towel and a clean pair of clothes which you laid on the bench ready for when you returned post-shower.
You hurried took off the rest of your gym clothes and make your way into the shower. Stepping inside, you almost jumped out of your skin, dropping the bottle of shampoo which you had been holding loosely in your hand.
Slumped on the floor, leaning against the wall of the shower was that familiar redhead. Her eyes closed. The shower above her had gone off but her body was damp and pale as it leant limply against the tiled wall, her redhair hanging in wet curls aside her face.
“Shit-“ You swore as you fumbled with your hand and rapidly brought it up to cover your eyes.
You looked away, keeping your hand over your eyes, totally unsure of what to do. Why was she there? Had she fallen asleep? Just how long had she been there? Your head was filled with about a hundred different questions as you called her name, however no response came, infact the entire changing room was silent aside from the rhythmic drip of a distant tap.
What were you meant to do? You couldn’t just leave her there but you really didn’t want to violate her privacy. Especially considering the two of you weren’t exactly civil at the best of times. You may have hated her publicly but you still held some respect for her. Thinking fast, you tried your best to keep your head turned away from her as you knelt down and took the towel which you had previously had been used to wrap around yourself, instead using it to cover her with.
Once you were positive that you had properly covered her. You turned back to face her and now that you were able to get a proper look at her, you realised that she looked dreadful. You quickly ran out to get yourself some clothes, pulling on the sweats you had left out on the bench before rushing back in.
“Romanoff.” You said shakily, as you got onto your knees beside her, your voice was barely loudly then a whisper.
No response. She didn’t even stir. You huffed and gently raised a hand and shook her shoulder lightly, raising your voice this time, “Natasha. I need you to wake up.”
You shook her again for a moment before a garbled groan came from the woman beside you as she slowly came too.
You released a breath which you hadn’t realised you were holding as she woke.
“Jesus Romanoff. You scared the crap outta me.” You sighed with relief as she blinked wearily, “What on earth are you playing at?”.
“Im fine.” She grumbled, rubbing her fist against her eye.
You couldn’t help but scoff in disbelief, “For a trained spy, you’re a shit liar Natasha. Passing out in the shower isn’t the behaviour of somebody who is ‘fine’.”
She sniffled and pushed herself upright, “I just got tired ‘n’ dizzy, that’s all.” She mumbled as she pulled the towel tightly around her.
You were shocked at her honestly. You wanted to scream at her for her irresponsibility, all while wanting to throw aside your feelings and pull her into your arms. To your heavy displeasure, you were finding it increasingly difficult to stay pissed at her in that moment of time.
“Well, dizzy or not, taking naps on the floor of the communal showers isn’t beneficial for anybody.” You smirked at your own joke and pushed yourself up from the floor, thinking for a moment before offering her your outstretched hand.
Natasha looked up at you for second , seeming to think about it herself before accepting your hand. Allowing you to pull you from the cold tile floor. You looked away as she stood, turning your back on her.
“You need to get some warm clothes on and dry that hair. You’re gonna get ill otherwise.” You instructed, before stepping back into the locker room as she slowly padded behind you.
“HI’TSHHUIEW!” A sudden loud sneeze made you jump from your skin for the second time that day.
You turned to see Natasha’s nose twitching as her eyes fluttered closed as she hovered her hand infront of nose expectantly, “Hh’iiTSHIEW!”
“Bless you.” It then finally hit you as to why she had seemed so weak earlier and to why she was so out of it. Still, blessing her felt good. Hell acknowledging her as something other then somebody you hated felt good. And you’d be lying if you said you didn’t crave her touch in that moment.
She gave you a nod, her own way of saying thanks as she pulled open her own locker to look for some clean clothes. Only afew moments later you heard her give a congested groan, it seems she only had 2 pairs of spandex and a sports drawer stuffed in there.
You groaned and thought with you feelings. You hesitated before opening your own locker up and taking out your spare pair of joggers and an oversized band t-shirt accompanied by a baggy sweatshirt, “Wear these” You said bluntly, throwing them onto the bench beside her.
Nat went to reach for them but stopped, retracting her hand. “I don’t need help from you.” She tried to snarl but the effect was lost as she broke off into a fit of deep rattling coughs.
“Oh cut the crap Nat, I know you’re sick.” You rolled your eyes as she stifled a sneeze into her arm, “That’s not good for you.” You added, a hint of concern slipping into your words.
“Im sorry.” She sniffled a reply before reached out for the offered clothes, not bothering to turn around as she pulled them on, still sniffing as she did so.
You sighed and reached back into your locker to see if you had any tissues for her. Sometimes you kept them in there incase of emergencies. Luckily for her, you had a small packet of those travel ones.
“Blow your nose or something, that sniffling is getting on my nerves.” You lied as you came over to her and pressed the pack into her hand.
It seemed you had done that in the nick of time, just as she had pulled a tissue from the pack the incessant itch in her nose made itself known again.
“Hhi’tshhiuew’ hH’ii’hhtshoo!” Natasha sniffled into the tissues before turning away from you to blow her nose. Her face blushing a deep red as embarrassment seeped into her cheeks.
“You really don’t feel well, do you?” You asked quietly once she had finished, the concerned words came pooling from your mouth.
Nobody could’ve expected what had happened next though. Wordlessly Natasha turned back to you and fell into your chest, wrapping her arms tightly around you.
“I miss us.” She whispered, her voice barely audible. You could feel the fever burning its way through her body as she held onto you.
“Nat-“ You stumbled over your words, “We cant do this. This isn’t you talking, it’s just your fever. This is silly. Come on now. Don’t say stuff like that.” You said but still you kept ahold of her, keeping her safe in your arms.
Of course she didn’t mean what she was saying. She was just feverish and sick. She’d go to bed and wake up with that same hate. Nothing could ever happen between you two again, right?
You felt her chest begin to jerk forwards as she began to cough again, Natasha moved to try and pull away but for some reason you couldn’t let her go. God you wanted too, but you just couldn’t make yourself let go. Instead, you felt your hand moving up to rub comforting circles down her back. Your body acting on its on accord.
Neither of you had felt your tears that had begun to spill from both of your eyes until you’d both let each-other go several minutes later.
Well, there was no going back now. You looked at Natasha, glancing over her pale face and green glassy eyes, you found yourself admiring the beautiful damp crimson curls which fell from her head. God, she was still as beautiful as ever. You’re stomach felt like it had been invaded by an army of fluttering butterflies and as you opened your mouth to speak, it was almost as if you’re words came pouring out.
“Natasha. I cant do this anymore. I cant stand here and say I don’t care about you because U do, and it hurts so much to lie to myself about this. Because at the end of the day, I still lov-“
Your sentence was cut off by a sudden movement. Natasha reached up and pressed her lips hard against your own, the memory of her kisses came flooding back as you found yourself reaching up to cup her cheek as she kissed you harder, turning to push you against the lockers.
The moment between you two seemed to last hours, each kiss bringing back tidal waves of feelings which you thought you’d long since buried.
Eventually she pulled away, the taste of her cherry lipgloss still hung on your lips.
“I love you too.” She replied to your unfinished sentence, a small smile spreading across her face. You felt yourself blush red, heat rushing to your cheeks.
“Can we really do this?” You whispered against her cheek, not wanting to break the atmosphere.
“I want us to try.” She replied as she pressed a final soft kiss against your lips.
You smiled and took her hand, “I’d like that, but first we should probably get you into bed. You really don’t look too good.”
She laughed before sputtering off into a weak cough, “Are you saying I look bad?” God. It was like nothing had ever happened between you two.
Smirking, you shook your head and looped an arm around her waist, “You know what I mean. Come on, lets get you into bed.”
Natasha nodded as you lead her to the exit and headed towards the elevator, “What about movie night?” She sniffled, running the sleeve of your sweatshirt underneath her nose.
“Movie night can wait until you feel better.” The elevator dinged and you let her step inside first, “Now more importantly, your bed or mine?”
Natasha smiled, “Yours.”
can i request a fic where both reader and nat are sick?
Cooped Up
Hey! Sorry for the last of posts, writers block has been utterly kicking my ass, hopefully this poorly-edited fic suffices ;)
Summary: Both you and Nat are sick in bed, this should be ‘fun’.
Wordcount: 1041
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
“‘M stop hogging the blanket Natty!” You let out a tired, congested whine before giving a weak pull at the duvet which Nat had encased herself in.
Reluctantly she gave him after you tugged again, giving the duvet just enough slack so you could pull it back over yourself.
“God Y/N, blow your nose.” Nat groaned roughly 5 minutes later as your persistent sniffles continued.
You rolled your eyes, “I don’t need to- HhI’Hehtshhiew!” You didn’t bother to continue your sentence, instead you wordlessly took a tissue and did as you were told.
You could see that the sky was still dark outside but it was obviously the morning. Your room had filled with an awkward silence, only broken by a few coughs here and there. Well, that was until Natasha started to sniffle…
“Nat-“
“Don’t.” She interrupted you, and turned to face your back, “Im sorry I snapped earlier. This whole ‘being cooped up thing’ isnt something Im too good at.” She admitted quietly.
You rolled over and softly kissed her cheek, “Its okay, did you end up managing to get much sleep?” You asked croakily as you changed the subject.
Nat shook her head. Last night was rough for the both of you. The air was dry causing the pair of you to be kept awake by fits of coughing. Neither of you really got any decent sleep.
“Im surprised that you’re – Hhuh’tshoo!” Natasha paused to cover a damp sneeze into the crook of her elbow, “Sorry, s’cuse. Im surprised your even awake this early, you should still be sleeping.”
Well, she did have a point there. You rolled your eyes and glanced over to the small clock on the wall opposite the bed reading the time: ‘8:12AM’. Neither of you had any business being awake at this hour in your current conditions.
A week or so ago, both yourself and Natasha had seen spent on an undercover mission in the subway systems of London, tasked with gathering intel on a new suspicious group who had been sending some very strongly worded messages. Normally a mission like this would be a piece of cake and well this one wasn’t exactly hard either, however there was a different type of problem. Winter. Normally you didn’t mind Winter, even enjoyed it infact. But Winter also signalled the arrival of something much less welcome. Flu season.
You found yourself dodging coughs and sneezes left right and centre. Trying to navigate the underground was compared to iceskating on a petri dish. And to nobody’s surprise, when you and Nat had arrived back home to the Avengers Tower just three days later, you were both showing signs of having caught the dreaded virus.
“Hhep’tshhh! Hih-hHh’itshhh!”
Natasha sniffled thickly beside you, suppressing a shiver as she sneezed into the duvet.
“Bless you ‘Tash.” You gave a tired murmur, handing her the box of tissues from your nightstand.
She flashed you a weak smile before taking one to blow her nose, “Thanks moya lyubov’” Her Russian accent slipped out with her along with her mother tongue. Something which only usually happens when she was sad or when…
You let your hand gently fall on her cheek before moving it up to her forehead, “You’re too warm.” You mumbled before turning away as a damp cough shook through your body.
Nat’s gentle hand came to run circled down your back, slowly soothing you as you re-caught your breath. You hadn’t realised it either but she had also slipped a hand over your own forehead, tutting as she felt your own warmth.
“You have your fever as well sweetie.” She hummed before jumping slightly as you let out three loud sneezes of your own.
She gave you a soft blessing as you plucked a tissue from the box.
“Aren’t we meant to be going to a meeting today.” You yawned, feeling a wave of fatigue wash over your body. Your body’s energy was only drained as you snapped forward to catch another round of sickly sneezes, “Hhh’iiishiew! hHih’eetshooo! Heh’ttshhhiew!”
“Bless. Your nose really isnt giving you a break, is it? Poor baby.” She cooed, handing you another tissue.
Your earlier words about the meeting seemed to finally hit Natasha. She gave a stuffy groan, having completely forgotten about the whole thing, “About the meeting, its not likely either of us are gonna go be able to attend. Im sure Tony’s already aware of that anyway.”
You huffed, fed up of being laid up in bed. You had secretly hoped that you would’ve been well enough to attend, but honestly you felt worst then ever.
Natasha seemed to notice your shift in mood, “Im sorry sweetie.” She paused to muffle damp, painful-sounding cough before clearing her throat and continuing, “I wanted to go too. This bug’s really hitten us both harder then we expected” She spoke soothingly and carefully shuffled so that her head was resting on your chest. And well, she wasn’t wrong either. Both of had hadnt expected to still be laid up feeling this horrible.
You pressed a soft kiss down on her fevered forehead and took her hand in your own, “Natty-“ Your voice came out in a whine just as your breath hitched in your throat, forcing you rapidly pull your hand away to sharply stifle a set of sneezes against it, “Sorry that was gross,” You continued, Your voice full of congestion as you let yourself whimper a quiet, “I really don’t feel good Natty.”
Nat looked at your glassed-over eyes, “I know my love, I know.” She mumbled softly against you, puling herself up to plant a kiss on your lips before quickly pulling back into the warmth of the blanket as cold shivers ran down her arms.
“I think you should try and maybe go back to sleep baby.” You sighed, noticing that Nat was failing at hiding yet another yawn.
She nodded and sniffled, “Only if you dream of me.” She gave you a cheeky wink, one which maybe would’ve sparked something if you both hadn’t been feeling so utterly miserable. She made herself comfortable, laying a hand over your stomach.
You hummed contently as you took her hand in your own and replied to her earlier request, “I think I’ll be able to manage that.”
“Oh darling, you need to stop rubbing at your eyes, I know they itch.” Natasha sighed as she laid a damp cloth over your fevered forehead.
You really did have some rotten luck, you’d managed to come down with a cold just as all the spring flowers had begun to bloom. This had resulted in you being confined to bed by your overly-protective girlfriend who was insisting on staying by your side.
Your chest gave a crackly sound as you breathed, causing Natasha brows to furrow with worry.
“You’re due for another dose of meds.” Her phone buzzed with the reminder she’d set, “You gonna be a good girl and take them properly this time?” She asked, giving you a stern look, despite her soft tone it still didn’t mask her annoyance from earlier.
That morning Natasha had tried to get you to take your medicine, and well, you didn’t exactly take this well. You’d pushed her away, burying yourself below your duvet. It had taken her awhole 10 minutes of bribing before you poked your head back above the blanket.
You hadn’t noticed it but Natasha had poured out small cup of DayQuil for you to take, along with 2 pills.
“Here.” Natasha grabbed your attention and held out your medicine, “Please take them for me baby.”
You gave sniffle but did as you were told, making a face of disgust as you swallowed the pills along with the the orange liquid.
“Thank you.” Nat leaned over to press a kiss to your lips, they were slightly sticky from the medicine but she didn’t care. She didn’t really care about getting sick either.
You smiled, enjoying the affection. However your enjoyment only seemed to last a second before your nose twitched tellingly.
“Hhuh’tshiew! Hep’tshhhiew! HhH- HHiii’tshiew!” You sniffled before going to rub your eyes again.
Nat’s hand gently slapped yours, reminding you of her earlier statement. “Don’t rub them, those meds will kick-in soon I promise.”
“Hh’tshhoo!” Your body seemed to have other ideas as your eyes began to grow watery again.
“You should try and get some more sleep darling.” Nat cooed, readjusting the cloth on your forehead, “You’ll feel better, cmon.” She moved your pillow and helped you slide down into the duvet.
You let yourself get comfy and looked up at her shiny green eyes, “You’ll be here when I wake up?”
“Of course, where else would I be?”
Please do one where Nat comes home from a mission and she hides an injury from you and she ends up being really sick! Or vice versa with the reader :)
Hiding The Truth
Hi there so this is my first longer-ish fic in ages so please lmk what you think. There may be a slight break in writing for afew days, some personal stuff has come up and I dont wanna put that energy in writing my writing :)
Summary: Nat was meant to be home hours ago, and you’re starting to wonder where she is.
Wordcount: 1208
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
You knew something wasn’t quite right…
The feeling had started when Nat hadn’t called ahead. You got a memo from Jarvis to say that her mission had been successful and that she would be home shortly. Now normally Natasha texted you well before you ever received the memos but hey, maybe she just forgot.
You resisted the urge to text her, instead opting to fit in the common room to read a book whilst you waited for her to return. The minutes ticked by and those minutes eventually turned into hours. A growing feeling of concern was only increasing as the lack of Natasha’s presence sank in.
You hadn’t even felt yourself fall asleep in that small armchair. But your eyes fluttered awake afew hours later as noises clattered from the kitchen. Looking up you could see Clint rummaging around in the numerous cupboards.
“Hey.” You yawned, slowly making your way towards him. Now noticing that the bright sky outside had turned a deep navy blue.
“Oh, didn’t see you there.” He shot you a smile but groaned as he closed the final cupboard, “Have you seen the NyQuil anywhere?”
“I think Wanda and Pepper had the last of it last week.” You replied as your curiosity grew, “How come you need some anyway?”
Clint gave you a confused look, almost as if he had missed something in conversation, “For Nat?”
Huh? Since when had Nat arrived back? You looked down at your phone, no new alerts. Why hadn’t she told you?
“Nat’s back?” You asked, unable to hide your surprise, “Where is she?”
“She arrived back about an hour ago, I think shes still in the training room, didn’t she tell you?” Clint said, pouring himself a coffee. You gave him a shook your head before, thanking him and leaving the room in the direction of the training room.
As you approached the gym, you could hear the echo of punches from within. Soon followed by a deep series of damp coughs.
You didn’t know what to feel when you entered the room. You saw Natasha but it was obvious something was off. She looked tired, her strong punches were replaced by sloppy inaccurate hits at the dummy. She hadn’t even noticed your arrival, only turning around after you had cleared your throat loudly to announce yourself.
“Oh Natty.” You gave a sympathetic look as she slowly and wordlessly shuffled towards you, falling into your open arms, “When did you get back?”
“About an hour ago.” Her voice was raspier then usual, Nat sniffled wetly and she pulled herself out of your hold. It was then that you noticed that small goosebumps running down her bare arms, presumably from the AC which kept a cool stream of air flowing through the gym.
“How come you didn’t tell me?” You let the question slip from your mouth as she jumped onto the treadmill, cranking the speed up to a jog.
Natasha stayed silent for a moment before offering a quiet, “Im sorry, I just forgot.” Her voice trailed off into a deep chesty cough, the sound of which made you cringe. It was a wet sickly sound, and your mind filled with worry.
“Oh.” Was all you were able to forget, feeling slightly hurt that she had ‘forgotten’ you however yours feelings were replaces with pangs of worry as Nat’s breath wheezed into another deep cough as her jogging speed increased.
“‘Tasha, you feeling alright?” You asked, trying to look her over.
Nat looked her shoulder for a moment before turning back to her workout, “Y/N. I am fine.” Her voice broke out towards the end as her breath gave a sharp hitch.
You didn’t even get the chance to speak again before Natasha doubled over, “Hh’itshhiew! Hh..Hutshiew!” The sneezes made her lose her balance causing her to stumble backwards, her body slipping and hitting the floor with a painful sounding bang.
“Nat!” You exclaimed, instantly at her side, “Are you alright?” You asked frantically as you held out your arm to help her stand.
“Im fine.” She mumbled but accepted your help, “I just need to finish this work- Hh’etshiew!” Her sentence was interrupted as she sneezed into her hand, grimacing as she dared to look down at her palm
“You don’t sound very fine.” You raised an eyebrow at her, before slipping your palm across her alarmingly warm forehead, “Shit Nat-“
“Don’t.” She interrupted, giving you a guilty look knowing she’d been caught out.
“You should’ve told me Natasha.” Your voice was stern but concern seeped into your words.
To your surprise, Natasha came to lay her head on your chest as she shuffled into you, scrubbing st her runny nose with her wrist.
“Do I need to haul your ass to bed or are you going to come willingly?” You added, wrapping an arm around her waist as you guided her towards the exit.
You walked in silence until you got into the elevator it was only after the doors closed she let herself go slack against you. You couldn’t help but feel sympathy for her, judging from how sick she seemed, it was clear she must’ve been feeling awful for afew days at the very least.
Nat mumbled something against you, before giving a noise which could only be described as ‘the call of a miserably sick person”.
“Do you mind repeating that?.” You purred, keeping your voice low to not further aggravate her obvious headache.
“Did Clint ever find that Nyquil?” She sniffled as the elevator dinged, letting you both out into the hallway only stopping to muffle more painful sounding coughs into her elbow.
You sighed, knowing the answer to her question from your earlier encounter, “Im sorry baby, theres none left. Theres been a bug going around, it’s probably where you picked this up from.” You kissed her warm forehead and held the door to your bedroom open for her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” She sniffled, taking off her jacket and throwing it against her desk.
You were expecting an apology but you would be lying if you said that you didn’t feel somewhat better for it.
“Its okay, lets just get you into bed.”
Nat groaned, allowing herself to flop onto the bed, quickly burrowing herself within the blankets. You couldn’t help but found her antics adorable, smiling as you saw, her peek her red nose poking above the blanket. But concern was ever present especially as her features changed and she ducked a sneeze into the covers.
“Bless ya!” You cooed as you went to hand her the box of tissues only stopping when you realised that the box was empty, “Aw honey, you look miserable, how would you feel about me quickly running out to pick you up some medicine and some tissues. And then if you’re still awake, we can cuddle until you fall asleep, does that sound okay to you baby?”
Natasha sniffled and gave you a grateful smile, her eyes full of fever and gratitude, “I think that would be wonderful.”
“Get your ass to bed Romanoff.” Tony scoffed, looking over at Natasha who sat slumped over the bar, her head in her hands. Over the booming music and loud chatter of people she hadnt even heard him approach.
“Fuck off,” She hissed, not having the energy to think of a petty remark.
“Seriously you look like shit. Wouldn’t it be better for all of us if you went to bed?” Tony insisted, pouring himself another whisky.
“How does that benefit me, plus this is my girlfriends party, theres no way I’m gonna miss it for some sniffles.” Natasha said, grabbing a tissue to discreetly blow her nose.
“For one, it means that I’m not going to catch whatever cooties you have going on over there.” He gestured with his hand, before softening his tone, “Plus, you really don’t look well Natasha, I don’t think Y/N is gonna be very happy if they find out about this… Oh.” His sentence trailer off, staring at something just over Natasha’s shoulder.
None of them had noticed you approach them and so you had caught the last bit of their conversation, “You don’t think I’m gonna be happy about what?” You asked, raising an eyebrow at Tony who threw up his hands defensively before quickly scooting away.
“Whats up, my love?” You came from behind Natasha and took the seat infront of her, “You’ve been awfully quiet all night.”
“Everything’s fine, Tony was just winding you up Hh everything Hhh is fi- Hh’iiitshhiew! Hh’ishtoo!” Natasha ducked her head into her elbow and turned away from you as she muffled the sneezes which she had tried so desperately to holdback.
“You’re sick…” You said as the realisation hit you. Reaching out to hold her hand, sighing as another thought clinked in you mind. Just how long had she hidden this from you?
Natasha shuffled uncomfortably in her seat. She hated that she had pulled you away from your party, especially for her stupid cold, “I promise I’m fine, lets just enjoy your party.” She sniffled damply as she finished her sentence.
“That can wait Natasha, have long have you felt ill?” You asked, not willing to back down from this.
Nat realised that you weren’t going to give this up so offered a quiet answer, “Just a day or so. I didn’t want to tell you, todays your birthday, this is your party. Today is meant to be about you.”
There was a small moment of silence as you thought of the right words to say, “It doesn’t matter what day it is. If you don’t feel good, I need you to tell me.”
You stood up and went behind her, pulling her against your chest, earning yourself a noise of contempt from her as she whispered s quiet, “Ok.”
In that moment Stark came wandering back, giving you a knowing look down at Nat who had her eyes closed as she rested her head against you, safely tucked in your arms.
sick reader and nat on easter using the prompts “I think we’re going to have to postpone lunch…” and “No, we can still enjoy our day. This is nothing.”
You’re Lucky I Love You
Hey! Another drabble done, Im gonna try and get another done tonight as well :)
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
“I think we’re going to have to postpone our lunch sweetie.” Nat sighed as she rubbed a hand down your back, coaxing you down from a rather unpleasant coughing fit.
“But we were meant to meet Clint and Wanda.” You whined, “Plus you love when Clint cooks Easter lunch for us.”
Nat sighed, “Yeah I do, but y’know what else I love? Having a healthy girlfriend.” She raised an eyebrow at you, “And we both know that you’re not the latter so don’t worry about missing the lunch, your health matters more.”
She did have a point. But you still couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt, you hated the fact Nat was going to miss something just because you had some sniffles.
“No, we can still enjoy our day, this is noth- Hh’tshoo! …hH’iitshhiew! Hih’tshiiiew!” You sniffled, defeated, not even bothering to finish your sentence before reaching out to grab a handful and tissue.
Natasha grabbed the box and put it in your lap, simply saying, “I rest my case.”
“Fine. Maybe going to dinner would’ve been a bad idea.” You admitted quietly, “I am kinda hungry though.”
“How about I make you some soup?” Nat laughed, both of you knew she couldn’t cook to save her life.
“Its tempting darling, but I’m already ill enough, I don’t want to add food poisoning to the list.” You smirked, earning yourself a light dig in the side from Nat.
“Watch it, just because your sick, it doesn’t mean I wont kick your ass.”
“Yes it does.”
Nat smiled, shaking her head, “You’re lucky I love you.”
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
When you woke up that morning, you were surprised to see Nat still laying beside you. She had always liked to get her day started early so when you’d woken up to her hand still wrapped around your waist it was an unusual yet pleasant surprise. You gently lifted her hand and carefully got out of bed, making sure to pull the duvet back up so she wouldn’t get cold. After that you silently tiptoed across the room to grab some thicker clothes before sneaking out the door, taking care to close it silently.
You didn’t want to risk using your ensuit bathroom, you had a habit of accidentally being really loud in the mornings so you used the gym changing rooms to get changed out of your pyjamas and into some cosier clothes. You weren’t going out today, infact nobody was. The whole team had just got back from dealing with an incident that had kicked off in Russia. There had been rumours of a new specially engineered bio-weapon being released by Hydra so the team had been dispatched to deal with it. However things didn’t go as smoothly as everyone had hoped. Somehow news of your arrival had been leaked and so when yourself and the team attempted to “ambush” the base, things didn’t exactly go as planned. It had taken an extra 3 days to dispose of all the contaminated rubble and debris. That was way the whole squad had collectively decided that today was to be a day of calm and rest…
That was until somebody turned on MarioKarts. You had heard the cheering when you stepped out of the changing rooms. Following the noise, you were led to the common room. Entering the room you couldn’t help but smile as you saw Wanda, Clint and Thor all sat on the floor laughing as they played MarioKarts. You were welcomed as you sat yourself down on the sofa next to them. For the next few hours you found yourself laughing and giggling as Thor accused Clint of cheating and Clint accused the TV of being biased. Wanda won effortlessly despite the fact it was her first time playing.
Everything had been normal… Well as normal as things could get with a teamful of Avengers living together. That was until you heard a small shuffling behind you. Nobody else had noticed it, they were too absorbed in the ongoing game. Curiously you turned and were slightly taken aback to see Nat. She was rummaging around in the mini fridge at the opposite side of the room, after a moment she took out a cherry gatorade. Weird… She hates cherry gatorade.
Natasha took a swig of the drink, spluttering slightly as she did.
“You alright over there?” You asked as Natasha slowly came around the side of the counter.
You didn’t really get a reply, well not in words anyway. All you got was some sort of incoherent mumble and a sniffle. Wait- Shes sniffling?
It was then that you noticed her appearance. You hadn’t been able to get a proper look at Natasha until now and well… She didn’t exactly look healthy. Her gorgeous red curls now hung damply at the side of her head, and her nose had obviously been irritating her judging from the red rawness which had formed around it and she was quite obviously exhausted.
It was obvious she was sick. It would explain why she had woken up so late too. Wordlessly you opened your arms as you gave her a sympathetic look. Nat’s shoulders dropped in defeat as she shuffled towards you. The sound of her shuffling was only emphasised by the fact she was wearing slippers. Adorable white rabbit slippers.
Natasha slowly sat down beside you, curling into your side as she clutched the box of tissues which she’d grabbed from the counter. Your heart broke. You hated seeing her like this. It was almost too much when she muffled a series of painful sounding coughs into her hoodie sleeve.
“Y/N?” She mumbled quietly as you slowly began to run your hand through her hair, “I don’t feel good.” Almost as if her body wanted to emphasise her point she had to frantically grab another tissue to muffle a flurry of sneezes into them, “Hiiit’ssshiew! Hh..H’tsshiew! Hih’iiishiew!”
“Aw sweetie. Bless you.” You sighed, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, “Yaknow its weird to hear you complain.”
“I feel like shit.” She groaned rubbing her hand against her tired glassy eyes before she closed them and snuggled further against you.
It was then that the others had noticed her arrival. Clint turned and gave you a confused look but after a moment he too noticed her red flushed cheeks and quietly questioned, “She sick?”
You nodded and Wanda gave her a sympathetic look, “Poor thing.”
“She’s really not feeling well.” You admitted as you held you closely.
“Im not surprised shes sick though.” Thor added, getting up from his position on the floor, “She spent the whole 3 days in Russia in a thin bodysuit. Clint, you coming to train?”
Clint accepted his offer and also got up from the floor. “Look after her.” He said as he left in the direction of the gym. As he left however the large door slammed behind him sounding a loud bang through the room.
Natasha stirred against you, being pulled from her sleep. “Mm?”
“Hey. Hey. Its alright. The door just slammed.” You comforted your feverish girlfriend who was curling into your arms, “We should probably get you back into bed sweetheart.”
“You’ll feel better with some sleep.” Wanda added as she too got up to go and train, Make sure to keep hydrated.”
“That’s a good point actually-“ You stopped, noting the rapid rising and falling of Nat’s chest.
“I nee- to… sn.. snee- Hii’tschiew! Huh’tshiew! Hh…Heh’tsshhiew!”
“Oh darling. We’re definitely getting you back to bed.” You cooed, carefully helping Nat get up incase she was dizzy.
You helped Nat walk back to your room, opening the door for her, “Thagks.” She said, her voice brimming with congestion, “Hiiiitsshiew! H..Hh’tshoo!”
“Bless you.” You cooed, instructing Nat to lay down. “Wait, did you leave your tissues in the common room?” You asked as she sniffled against her wrist.
Nat nodded and went to pull herself from the bed to retrieve them, “No, no.” You stopped her, pulling the duvet back over her, “I’ll get them, you just stay here.” You smiled as you left the room, knowing that Natasha would probably be asleep by the time you returned. But that didn’t matter, she was resting that’s all that mattered. At least you’d be able to spend the rest of the day cuddling the one you loved, even if she was all sick and sniffly.
You took a dee breath of the cool spring air as you gazed out over the balcony, taking in the surrounding scenery. Easter was a time for a fresh start, new beginnings, comfort and chocolate, lots and lots of chocolate. That last part didn’t really occur to you though, you were more of a skittles person.
A strong arm came to rest around your shoulders. Natasha. You didn’t even have to turn to know it was her. She’d just gotten back from… Well, you didn’t exactly know where she went, the only clue her quick, “I’ll be back soon” before leaving the apartment.
“Hey darling.” She purred, sliding round to face you, keeping a hand hidden behind her back.
“Whatcha hiding there Natty?” You beamed, trying to get a peak, only you had to promptly turn away from her feeling a sharp prick at the base of your nose, “Hh..-Heh'tschiew! Whew, sorry about that.” You laughed it off, twitching your nose as you tried to ignore the persisting tickle.
“These are for you.” She smiled, revealing a gorgeous arrangement of pink, red and yellow flowers. You weren’t sure exactly which actually types they were but they were beautiful.
“Wow…” You said, voice full of gratitude, “These are amazing!” You brought them close to your face and took a deep breath, you senses were overwhelmed by the acute smell of spring. They smelt beautiful but… Why did they make your nose so-
“Hh’tshoo! ...H’htsSHIEW! HihH’eESHIEW!” Your body gave you zero warning, you found yourself doubling at the force of each sneeze, by some miracle, you were able to cover with your elbow.
You sniffled thickly, feeling your nose begin to slowly run. What on earth had caused this? You looked up to see Nat, a look of shock and worry plastered across her face.
“Bless you Y/N” Natasha enthused the ‘bless’ portion of the phrase, “What set that off darling?”
You were about to answer when the itch in your nose returned, it felt like something had lit a fire within there. Your eyelashes fluttered rapidly and you held up a weak finger, a sign for her that your nose hadn’t quite finished tending to its business.
Your nose launched into of sneezes as you buried it into the crook of your elbow, desperate to muffle the sound of your ongoing fit. The corners of your eyes had began to water and a small tear slowly fell down your cheek.
Natasha’s soft hand slowly came to brush that tear away. After a minute or so, your sneezing decreased before fully coming to a stop, for now. You sniffled trying to control your still-twitching nose.
“Jesus…” You mumbled, regaining your composure.
“Oh darling, bless you princess.” Nat cooed, a small hint of worry still remaining, “Your nose really didn’t agree with something. Could it be these?” She gestured to the flowers which had been placed on the balcony edge.
Now it made sense, “Are those flowers in bloom?” You asked, already knowing the answer. Nat nodded silently and you sighed, out of self-frustration. Awhile back you’d had a similar reaction, to which flowers were the source. Though it seemed like it was a one-off occasion, but from the way your nose was currently reacting it seemed that wasn’t the case.
“Im so sorry Y/N. I didn’t know you were allergic otherwise I wouldn’t-“ Nat started to stumble an apology, it was obvious that your sudden outburst had worried her and now that she realised it was her gift that caused it, a feeling of guilt began to wash over her. Luckily you interrupted before she was able to continue grovelling.
“Hey, its okay. Its really fine. I didn’t know either, its only just fully clicked.” You pulled her in for a hug only stopping to wipe a small tear which had begun rolling down her cheek.
“Are you sure?”
“Positive.” You smiled, gently edging her inside. “Lets just go back inside, Im gonna shower and afterwards we can share some candy and watch a movie, lets just enjoy the rest of our Easter.”
Summary: Nat’s pushing herself way too far and when you’re there to hold her close. The sparks of your feelings burst into flames. Wordcount: 3761
Read Pt1 Here
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Natasha couldn’t help but sigh as she stood woozily over the sink in the faculty bathroom, as that one moment replayed in her mind. That one moment as you walked away. The way your hair swished carefully at your shoulders, the way your body curved as you took your perfect strides towards the exit leaving her in absolute awe. Everything about you was perfect… Shit.
She hadn’t even realised just how hard she had fell for you. Now if she’d have known the effect you would have on her, Natasha never would’ve allowed you to get this close. She wanted exactly what she would never be able to have. I’m such an idiot…
Natasha leant down towards the sink as she splashed the cool water against her burning face as she sniffled. Sighing again as she looked over her pasty complexion in the mirror infront of her. Her forehead was damp with feverish sweat as she took slow breaths, trying to control her racing thoughts.
Just another few hours. Thats all it was. All she had to do was get a faculty meeting over and done with. Then she’d be able to go home. Home. Natasha never thought herself as a person to miss their home but as she stood weakly over the sink, she couldn’t help but long to be back in the safety and comfort of her room. Wrapped in the safety and comfort of your arms…
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
By the time Natasha had gotten home it was almost 11pm. The meeting ended up running over by a mile. When she finally stumbled into her apartment, Natasha was burning up with her fever. Her apartment seemed to spin around her as she staggered towards her room. Stepping into her empty room, Natasha’s heart sank seeing her bed empty, just as it always was. She didn’t know why but she had half expected you to be sat there, just waiting for her to arrive back home. Idiot. How could she miss you when you weren’t even hers? She didn’t have long go dwell on the matter however. Moments later her tummy gave an irritated growl, a wave of nausea rushed over her as she struggled to fight back her gag as the contents of her stomach churned.
⋐ Fuck, fuck, fuck! Natasha bolted into the small bathroom which connected to her room. She didn’t have time to plaster her hair back before she began to heave into the bowl of the toilet, gagging as the remains of her lunch made their way up her throat. The moment seemed to last forever, just when she’d thought she was finished another wave came upon her. By the time she had finally finished Nat was exhausted. She slumped against the side of her shower, sliding herself onto the floor, the cool tiles felt amazing against her burning skin so she just led there, her face pressed to the floor. Now Nat knew it was gross, but at this point she just didn’t care anymore. She’d been dealing with feeling like utter crap all day, there was no point in trying to act prideful now. Deep down Nat she knew that she should probably get up, push herself up from the floor and get herself cleaned up and crawl into the comfort of her bed, but she just couldn’t. Her muscles felt weak and fatigued, slowly as she resisted the urge to move the room gradually grew darker around her. Maybe just another 5 minutes wouldn’t hurt…
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Nat awoke that morning to…silence? Her apartment was completely silent. Natasha hadn’t even realised that she was still laying on the cold floor of her bathroom until she pushed herself upright. How she’d even managed to fall asleep there was beyond her, the floor was far from comfy despite the fact it felt great against her skin. Nat slowly stood up, gripping the sink for support as she steadier herself. Looking up and at the mirror Nat grimaced as she took in her sickly appearance.
God she looked like crap. Hell, she felt like it too. She looked out and into her room, gazing at her still bed, longing to curl herself beneath the sheets. No, she had to go into work today, she had things to do, students to teach. She needed to see you again.
Thinking of work, she didn’t even know what the time was. Natasha quickly turned to the sink and cleaned herself up. She carefully made her way into her room only to near jump out of her skin as she saw the time on her small alarm clock.
10:20AM?!
“SHIT!” She hissed aloud, only it ignited the burn at the back of her throat causing her to break into a fit of coughing and splutters. Scrambling over to towards her drawers she was pulling out the first things which she grabbed. Luckily enough the outfit seemed to match and Natasha hastily pulled it on, throwing her sweat-drenched clothes from the previous night onto the floor beneath her. Within 10 minutes Natasha had managed to get herself somewhat ready. She gave herself a final look over in her hallway mirror, cringing internally at the greasy hair which hung sloppily by her shoulders. There wasn’t time to deal with this now.
She was so focused on getting out on time, she almost forgot to lock her apartment door as she raced out and towards the elevator. Once in the lobby she didn’t have the time nor strength to give her usual chippy greeting to the kind receptionist at the desk, instead she hurried past almost walking into the automatic door itself when it didn’t open instantaneously.
Nat quickly located her car and hopped it, silently cursing at the time as it popped on the car’s small electronic screen. 10:35. Her lecture had started 15 minutes ago… Nat mumbled a string of profanities as she sped out of the parking lot. Speeding off towards the direction of the campus.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
“Seriously again?” You quietly said under your breath, tapping your foot impatiently as the time ticked by. The feeling seemed to be mutual with the rest of your classmates. The same uneasy conversations began again, this time people seemed to be more annoyed rather then confused. There was a slight motion in the back of your head however that you couldn’t quite shake, was this your fault? You couldn’t help but wonder if your interaction yesterday had somehow deterred her to the point where she didn’t even want to come into her own lecture.
There was a slight guilt that washed over your thoughts as you tapped your pencil against the side of your open notebook. There was a part of you hoping that Nat wouldn’t show, hoping that you wouldn’t have to face looking her in the eyes. No. You had to see her, you needed too see her. Your slight feeling of guilt soon blossomed into a overwhelming concern as Natasha had still not shown. Two days in a row, something really wasn’t right. The supposed lesson crept by as time passed with no sign of Nat showing. There was only 20 minutes left now, was she really not going to show up?
A rapid flush of cold air swooped into the room as the main door to the hall swung open. An exhausted-looking Nat slowly dragged herself to the centre of the hall and slumped down at the chair behind her desk.
“Natasha?” You whispered quietly, purely out of shock and concern. For lack of words, she looked terrible. Not only did it look like she had barely slept, her forehead looked damp with beads of sweat. It was a mystery how she had even managed to walk around the classroom nevermind drive the whole way here in that condition, the reason for her lateness suddenly making a whole lot of sense now. “Just a cold” She had said… Lair.
“Get out your books please.” Nat’s voice came out in raspy string of words, “Just revise… Or something like that… Hh’tushhoo!”
“Professor?” Somebody spoke out, breaking the awkward silence which had fallen on the room.
Natasha barely looked up from where her head rested in her hands, she responded to the student with a congested mumbled of incoherent words she said before looking up only to wince as the light shone into her eyes. The student stayed silent for a moment resulting in an annoyed snap from Nat, “Well?”
The hissed tone of her voice irritated her raw throat, causing her to muffle a series of crackly painful sounding coughs into her elbow.
“N-Nevermind.” The student stuttered, clearly changing their mind about asking questions upon seeing how much the professor was out of it.
Now Nat usually had a strict no-talking policy during her lessons but she didn’t even seem to care anymore as the uneased students began talking amongst themselves. The loud bell rang in the hallway and people hurriedly packed away, many not daring to look at their professor as they rushed from the hall.
Collecting the last of your things, you threw your small backpack over your shoulder before slowly making your way to Nat’s desk, where she was sitting with her hand resting on her arms facing the table.
“You can sit down.” Nat looked up with a tired croak, quickly adding, “Only if you want too.”
You sighed, trying to mask your growing concern, “Of course I want too.” You kept your tone soft as you sat down, not wanting to aggravate the obvious headache she’d been suffering through, “Nat. Did I… Can we talk?” You stumbled over your words, struggling to find the right ones.
She looked up at you, finally bringing her hand from her hands for the first time since she’d entered the room, “I wanted to talk too.” She began but cut herself off, holding up her finger to pause the convosation, “Hh’heptsshoo! Hi’tshhhoo!” Natasha’s hair fell messily infront of her eyes and you had to resist the demanding urge to fix it for her, “Sorry…” Her hoarse voiced trailed off as she sniffled thickly, scrunching her nose as the relentless itch persisted.
“Bless you.” You cooed, allowing a undertone of comfort to seep into your words. You longed to hold her, to assure her she’d be fine. Your heart dropped at the thought of her spending the night alone in her condition, “You really shouldn’t be up and about with a bug like that.” You chided her lightly, keeping your voice soft.
“Im fine darling.” Your heart fluttered as you heard sound of her hoarse voice whispering the petname, “Its just some sniffles dear.” She cleared her throat as her words scratched against her aching red throat.
“We both know that not exactly true- bless you, bless you.” You blessed her kindly again as Natasha failed to stifle another set of sickly sounding sneezes, “You sound terrible, why did you come in today?” You let your hands rest of the table infront of you and to your surprise Natasha outstretched hers and cupped them within her own. Is this really happening?
“You worry too much.” Nat tried to assure you but her efforts were shallow, she cleared her throat again before asking, “Can we talk about… us?”
You shifted in your seat at the verbalisation of your complicated relationship. There was nothing more then you wanted than to be with Natasha. She was perfect. Now with Natasha mentioning the feeling between the pair of you, could this be real? Could this really happen?
“I was wanting to talk about that too.” You admitted, gazing longingly into her glassy green eyes, for a moment you swore you could see something in them, “What exactly are-
“Hhi’tshh! Hh..h’ischiew! Hhup’sssh!”
Nat’s head ducked down into her elbow as she failed to control her sniffling nose, she tried to apologise but broke off into of rather unpleasant coughing. Before you knew what you were doing you had already rushed around to her side of the desk and was running your hand down her back in soft circles as she came down from her fit.
Once she’d finally regained her breath Natasha leant back against you, her body exhausted seemed to move without thought, sinking into your warmth as her feverish body was wracked with chills. The feeling of concern only grew and Nat began to mumbled something against you. An idea slipped into your mind so you hesitantly hovered your hand above her forehead, silently asking for permission. Receiving a small nod from Nat you laid your hand upon her forehead, frowning as the heat radiating from her feverish head met your skin.
“Mmmh, you feel amazing.” Nat muttered, her shaky hand reached up and she rubbed her thumb against your cheek.
Oh Jesus. A burning redness embraced your cheeks, and the weight of your feelings truly sunk in. So… This is what love really felt like.
Your feelings seemed to distract you and had you had failed to notice Natasha shift from her position as she begun to stand. You stepped back, allowing her room when her knees suddenly gave way, sending her stumbling backwards, back into your hold.
“Woah woah. Easy there sweetie.” The petname slipped from your mouth like silk as you steadied her on her feet, “We should get you home. You’re in absolutely no condition to be here right now.” The concern and worry you were feeling clouded your mind, you had almost completely forgotten on why you had came over to speak in the first place. Whatever, that could wait. What mattered now was Natasha.
By the time your mind had registered what you were doing, you were already in the process of gathering Natasha’s things, packing them into her bag before pulling it over your back, insisting that you carry it for her. “Cmon. I promise I’m gonna get you home Natty.”
You were certain you saw the hint of a smile of her face as you called her that. You couldn’t be 100% sure as her face switched before she sneezed twice, sniffling afterwards but you swore that you’d seen it.
“You okay to walk?” You lowered your voice, almost as if the question was deeply personal. You let Nat think for a moment and when it became clear that she was too out of it to make a decision you took matters into your own hands, whispering sweet nothings as you helped her out of the hall and down the corridors towards to the entrance of the campus, not caring who saw. You instructed her to take a seat on one of the small benches, pulling out your phone to order a taxi. No way were you letting her drive in her condition.
A gust of icy wind swept through sending chills down Nat’s spine. You instinctively wrapped your arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer into your warmth. Natasha sank into your warmth as the pair of you waited for the taxi to arrive. You elected to remain silent, the only sound being that of Nat’s persistent sniffles.
It wasn’t too long before a car pulled into view, rolling down its window and calling your name. You jumped up, making sure to be ready to support Nat. You were glad you did when she her foot got caught, almost sending her flying forwards as she tripped. “You look drunk.” You joked lightly, trying to spare her the embarrassment.
“‘m dizzy,” She offered a semi coherent explanation as she made her way to the car, sinking into your support arms which graciously supported her body. Natasha ducked into the car, you weren’t sure wether to climb beside her but Nat spoke up softly, “Don’t feel pressured to come. You’ve already done more then enough.” Her voice was frail as she spoke, assuring you she didn’t need you to come any further but her eyes screamed another story, deep down she longed for you. Her fevered mind was racing with thoughts that she just couldn’t voice no matter how much she wanted too. You’d made her a promise and you wasn’t going to break it.
“When I said I’m taking you home, I meant it.” You climbed into the opposite side, pleasantly surprised when Nat leant against you mumbling something you couldn’t quite hear, “Now, where am I taking you?”
It took her a moment to think, before she croaked out the address of her apartment. The car began to move, the jolty road doing little ease her discomfort. You heard her moan as the car dipped inti a pothole causing her to bang her head into the side of the window, “You wanna lean this way?” You offered, shifting you shoulder so she’d be more comfortable.
Nat accepted this offering and she rested her body against you. She’d been doing this a lot today and each time it never failed to cause a storm of butterflies in your stomach. She was Natasha Romanoff. THE Natasha Romanoff. The infamous Black Widow. She was the ultimate soy, regarded worldwide for her skill and here she was laying against you, it felt like nothing else mattered more in the world. Yet in the back of your mind, there was a small dreaded thought that you just couldn’t face. Nat had a fever right? What if shes not thinking clearly, what if when shes finally back to feeling her usual self this relationship ends here. Had you been looking too deep into things? What if to her, you were just a friend… What if just another student to her?
You had to be sure. Eventually the car pulled up too a large fancy-looking apartment complex. Huh this must be where she lives when shes not at the compound. You got out of the car to open the door for the exhausted woman who was having trouble even pulling herself from the comfy leather seat of the taxi.
“Lets go you inside.” You encouraged her lightly, thanking the driver of the taxi as you closed the door.
“You’re amazing.” Nat muttered against you as you crossed the road to the entrance of the building.
Somebody from inside seemed to have saw you and came rushing out to the doors. Nat recognised the faint figure of the kind receptionist from earlier that morning. She seemed panicked at Nat’s state of health, insisting that she take her inside.
“Thank you, but I’ve got this.” You fake smiled and tried to assure the woman that you were both perfectly fine and didn’t need her help. She seemed almost offended by this, pulling Nat slightly inside.
Nat didn’t even seem to realise what was happening, her mind was far too clouded. All she did know that she was being slowly pulled away from you. She could make out your shocked face, why was this woman pulling her away. Why was she leaving you? …No!
Even in her fevered state Natasha easily broke free of the woman’s grasp, swinging herself around to knock the back of the woman’s knees, sending swiftly her to the ground, just hard enough to not cause her any harm. You heard the annoyed scoff of the receptionist who had quickly shuffles back away to the safety of her desk, as Natasha swayed woozily, the whole ordeal seeming to zap any of her remaining energy.
“Natty!” You called out, running up to her, wrapping your arms around her. You couldn’t stop the words spilling from your mouth as you held her close, “Natasha. I cant stay silent anymore. Nat I think- No. I know, I lov-“
Natasha was trying her best to listen, trying to fight the fog in her mind as you talked. Just as you began to say your final statement her nose began to twitch, “Hh’tshoo!”
“…you.” You admitted, almost shaking as much as she was as you poured out your feelings.
Nat was in shock. Had she heard you correctly? No. No. No. This was just her sadistic mind trying to trick her. There was no way she’d be tricked again. No… ‘I love you?” No! You must’ve said “bless you” and she’d misheard you… unless?
Her mind couldn’t comprehend what you’d said, she let out a small, “Oh.” Unsure of what to say in response.
Oh?! What was that supposed to mean?!
There silence was deafening as you both stared at each other, both of you unsure of what to say. Nat’s teeth began to chatter slightly despite her raging fever. It was then you decided to move, you cupped her burning face within your soft palm before leaning in and softly kissing her cheek.
Nat smiled. She felt dizzy, though this time for a different reason, an array of butterflies fluttered around as your gentle lips kissed her. She almost lost herself in the moment entirely. “Y/N.” She moaned softly as you pulled away, leaving your faces blushed a scarlet red.
“Can we really do this?” You whispered, as Natasha reached with a single hand to hold your own.
“We can make it work.” Nat responded through her smile. She didn’t hesitate for a moment before taking her other hand and placing it on the back of her hair, gently holding you as she pressed her lips against yours.
Fireworks. That was the only work to describe the emotions you felt in that moment. It seemed to never end but Nat had to pull away to muffle a series of coughs.
“You should probably head up to bed.” You spoke quietly, still concerned with her current state of health, “Go and sleep this off. You shouldn’t come in until you actually feel better.”
“Im fine sweetie.” There it was again, hearing the familiar petname made your heart almost skip a beat, “It sounds worst then it fee- Hh.Hnngxt! H...Hhep’tshoo!”
“Bless you.” You cooed and stepped inside to follow Natasha, “Well you sound lke you feel terrible to me so what we’re going to do is; get you inside, run you a cool shower so we can get that fever of yours down and then we’re going your to get more much earned rest. Im going to look after you Nat. How does that sound?”
“…That sounds perfect darling.”
Professor Romanoff (Pt1)
Hey! This is just a little idea that @lyak12 helped me with. This will have more then one part so I’ll add them when theyre written. Im gonna get some requests done next, I just wanted to get this out!
Pt1 <
Pt2
Summary: Natasha Romanoff is your teacher. You’ve always had a small crush on her. But when shes sick, her guard is let down. Now what?...
Wordcount:1,308
Any spelling/grammars are mine, sorry :)
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Tiny bit of backstory: R is attending one of the leading universities. Most people who attend end up graduating and becoming Agents for Fury/SHIELD. Nat teaches two classes and R is in both of them. So, the both of them have a good friendly relationship and are quite comfortable with each other.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
You happily hummed to yourself as you walked the short journey to your next class. You put a little dance into your step as one of your favourite songs began to play in your headphones. You quicken your pace slightly as you glanced down at your watch, you were hoping to arrive slightly early to have a quick chat with your teacher, Miss Romanoff, or Natasha as she preferred you to address her as.
The university you attended was well-known for producing high-quality agents for SHIELD and as a result many of the Avengers ran side-classes for a select body of students. Luckily for you, you had been selected to participate in two of those special classes. Both being taught by Natasha.
Your song finished on cue as you pushed open the door to the main building, after 3 years of studying on campus you confidently knew your way around the building and you found yourself outside the door to your lecture hall within a few minutes.
The door swung open as you walked into the room, stopping abruptly when you noticed your missing teacher. Where was Natasha? She was always at least 10 minutes early to every lesson without fail, there hadn't been a time in your whole time of attending the university where Natasha hadn't been early.
How strange. You had really been hoping for some advice on your upcoming final exam. Well, you could always see her after class. The rest of your class gradually arrived as the minutes ticked by, with still no sign of Natasha showing up. There was an uneasy grumble of small convosations, everybody wondering the same thing. After another long 10 minutes people were beginning to repack their bags and collect their things.
At that moment, the door swung open and Natasha came rushing into the hall. “Sorry guys!” She apologised as she got herself ready. You couldn’t help but notice the twinge in her voice, it sounded slightly off, a lot raspier than usual. If you didn’t know her better you would've thought that she sounded tired.
“Okay guys, can we get out our notes from last lesson please.” She asked, shooting you a brief smile as you made eye contact with her. You couldn’t help but watch in awe as Natasha took control and began her lesson.
Thankfully it seemed like you had an easy lesson for today. It was mainly focussed on revising combat strategies and methods of stealth. Stalking of stealth, you couldn’t help but notice that Natasha was routinely rubbing her throat and muffling small coughs into her arm, if you weren't watching her so closely you would have missed the small actions altogether.
Scribbling down another set of notes you were surprised to hear Natasha’s voice announce, “Well guys. We can call it a day here, make sure to revise!” Her voice broke off and you looked up to see her stifling a sneeze into her elbow, not so much as a sound to give her away.
The room was filled with a satisfied hum of noise as she made her accountment. Everybody was surprised, Natasha’s lessons never finished early, never mind by a whole 20 minutes. People were quick to leave, fearing she would change her mind. It didn’t take long for the room to empty leaving just you by yourself.
You grabbed your bag and slowly walked over to the big desk at the front of the hall, which Natasha was currenting sitting at, her head in her hands while she rubbed at her temple. She hadn't even noticed you approach the desk until you spoke, “Hey.”
“Oh hello.” She answered with a tired smile as she glanced up at you before signalling you to take a seat.
You sat down at the opposite side of the desk before giving into your concern and asking, “Are you okay? You seemed tired during the lecture.”
“Oh.” Natasha really wasn’t expecting anyone to pick up on her current situation, she was almost embarrassed that it was so noticeable, “Its fine, I'm just a lit- Hh.. S'cuse me.. Hht’shoo!” Nat's nose interrupted her sentence as she sneezed against her wrist and sniffled slightly afterwards.
“Bless you.” You hummed lightly, fidgeting with your fingers slightly as you considered what to say next, before you had your chance to say anything though you were interrupted by the small hitching of the tired professor's voice. Somehow it seemed that Natasha had managed to stave off the ongoing tickle in her nose as she lightly pressed a finger to her nose, sniffling to herself lightly.
“You alright?” You asked wishing there was something else you could do for her. You longed to wrap her up warm and lay by her side, attending to her every need. You had never seen Natasha show even the slightest sign of sickness ever. You dreamed of her laying beside you in bed, huddled under a shared blanket. No! She was your teacher, your role-model. There was no way anything could ever happen between you, even with the small age-gap... Still, you couldn’t help but let your mind endlessly daydream at the thought of being with her.
Nat quietly grabbed a tissue and blew her nose before speaking back up, “I'm fine Y/N. Don’t worry about me dear. Are you ready for your finals?” She asked as you felt a small blush seep into your cheeks as a result of her pet-name for you.
“I think so. I just need to remember to keep calm in the exam. I have a habit of getting really nervous beforehand”
 “You’ll do great. You’re smart, remember that.” She broke off to muffle a deep rattling cough into her elbow. She sounded terrible. “Excuse me,” She sighed, grabbing another tissue, “I think I'm starting to catch a little bit of a cold.” Her voice trailed off as she quietly admitted that last part.
“I think so too,” You agreed, clicking your pen to stop yourself from fidgeting, you weren't sure whether to finish there but despite your better judgement you decided to add, “Hey... Listen it must be more than a little cold if it's making you feel sick. Maybe you should just go easy for a few days.” You must’ve been out of you mind as you reached over, gently cupping Natasha’s hands in your own.
You could’ve sworn that her face turned a deeper shade of red as she held your eye contact for a moment for quickly snapping her face towards her shoulder.
“Hhshtooo! Sorr-”
“Bless you.” You cut Natasha off before she was able to complete her apology, “You definitely don’t sound well though.” You added sympathetically.
“I’ll be fine Y/N. Don’t worry about me, just focus on revising.” She looked down to glance at the time on her phone, “E-Excuse me dear.”  Natasha retracted her hands which were still cupped beneath your own, she slowly began to pack her equipment, avoiding eye contact as you abruptly stood up.
“I should get going. I need to study.” You quickly chucked your backpack over your shoulder, slowly walking towards the door, heat beginning to rush to your face as your mind raced. Had you overstepped a limit?
“Oh.” Was that disappointment in her tone? No. It couldn’t have been.
“I hope you feel better.” You added before turning to leave the hall... Had you just messed everything up?
“Thank you.” Natasha’s voice trailed off as she watched you quickly walk towards the door. God I’m such an idiot. She thought to herself as you left, a piece of her heart leaving with you. Truthfully all she wanted was to be beside you, cuddling against your warm body as you played with her hair. Stop it, Natasha argued with herself. She was your professor; she was meant to be a role-model. This could never happen, right?
Summary: You were sick. You knew it. But you werent about to admit it to the woman you loved, especially since you had planned to go out that night.
Wordcount:2,406
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
"Did you end up getting any sleep last night?" Nat's voice pulled you from your daydreams. You had had trouble falling asleep the previous night which had led to hours of endless tossing and turning.
"Yeah, It wasn't long after you fell asleep." You lied. You didn't like lying to your girlfriend but it was for the best, telling her the truth about your horrendous night would only cause her to worry.
Truth be told you knew you were sick. The soreness in the back of your throat and congestion was a constant reminder of it. You wanted to tell Natasha, you really did. But the two of you had planned to go to the cinema later and you weren't willing to let her down.
You felt that familiar prick in your nose and you shook your head almost trying to chase the tickle away however it didn't seem to work as you sneezed harshly towards your elbow, "Hh..heh'eetshew! Hh-heh’kitshee! Sorry, s’cuse me.”
"Bless you." Natasha hummed, looking up at your from her paperwork, "Y/N are you sure your alright?"
"Im fine 'Tasha" You replied, swiping your finger against your nose, "The pollen-count is probably just high today."
Natasha was about to make another point but was interrupted by the pinging of her phone. "Shoot." She scoffed, reading the text, "Fury needs me to go out and deal with something. Is it okay if I meet you at the cinema, say 6-ish?"
You wanted to sigh. You were looking forward to spending the day with Natasha even if it was just doing paperwork, "Its fine. I'll meet you there." You answered her question with a fake smile.
"Thank you for understanding darling." Nat hugged you before she quickly gathered her things, "I'll see you tonight."
"Cya. Have fun kicking ass." You replied, letting yourself finally sigh as she left the room.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Unfortunately for you, your symptoms seemed to only increase as the hours ticked by. The unbearable tickle in your nose never seemed to fully leave as you once again sneezed into your elbow.
"HhheH'tcHIEW!..Hh'ehttschoo!" You were left sniffling frantically, trying to keep your nose under control. Huffing to yourself, you pushed yourself up from your workspace and headed to the compound kitchen in search of tissues, to your surprise Wanda was already in there drinking a smoothie whilst working on her laptop at the table.
"Hey Y/N." She greeted you warmly when she saw you enter the room.
"Hey." There was a hoarseness beginning to form in your voice when you spoke and you began to search the cupboards.
Wanda looked up and leaned over her laptop, trying to work out what you were doing, "Whatcha looking for?" She asked out of curiousity.
Your voice hitched as you tried to stave off the familiar tickle forming in your nose, "Hh.. Some tissu- Hehae'ktieew! HHh’kktoo! Ugh sorry."
"Bless you! You don’t need to apologise just for sneezing silly." Wanda responded as she got up from her seat and made her way over towards you, “I saw Nat go out earlier, does she know you’re sick?”
“I'm not sick.” You stated bluntly before standing up to search the higher cupboards.
“Yeah, and that’s why you sound like you're drowning in a sea of mucus.” She joked, expecting a laugh.
What she wasn’t expecting was for you to turn around and face her with a scowl on your face. You coughed slightly into her arm before saying, “Just leave it. I told you Im fine.”
You briefly saw Wanda’s eyes flash red for a moment, it took you a second to realise what she had done and when you looked back up at her, you couldn’t quite read her expression.
“Fine. Maybe I feel a little sick. It isn't a big deal” You sniffed sheepishly, giving up your search after finding nothing.
“Don't you think you should tell her?” Wanda asked as swayed slightly on your feet.
“No. We’re going out later and I don't want to ruin our plans, we- Heh’xxt- have been trying to ..Hh go out for ag- Hh'ishiew! Hheh'tktoo! - ages.” You fought your way through your sneezes as Wanda lightly rubbed your shoulder and blessed you each time.
“You really don't sound good Y/N. Wouldn't it just be easier to tell her?” She asked, her concern for you was starting to become irritating, why couldn’t she just drop it?
“Just leave it, Wanda. It's none of your business at the end of the day.” You hadn't meant to snap at her, you were more annoyed at yourself if anything. Who the hell manages to get sick during the summer anyway? Without saying another word you snatched yourself away from Wanda and stormed from the room leaving her dumbfounded and in shock.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
The next few hours seemed to scrape by as you tried to get back to your work. It was only when your phone rang you lifted your head from the desk.
“Hello Y/N, Im just checking in on you.” Nat's voice came through the phone and you could feel yourself relax slightly at the sound of it.
“Hey Nat.” The words seemed to tear themselves from your throat and you quickly pushed the receiver away to cough deeply into your elbow, hoping it wouldn't be audible to your girlfriend down the line, “How's your job going?” You asked when you had regained your composure.
“Its going well, are we still okay to see the movie later? Your voice sounds like it hurts.” Natasha asked and you could hear the hint of worry in her tone.
You cleared your throat before you answered, trying to make yourself sound more jolly, “Yep, we’re still down for it. My voice must just sound weird since we’re on the phone, Im fine don’t worry about it.”
“You sure?”
“Yep! positive. ‘Tasha I'm gonna have to go somebody's here. I’ll see you at 6, bye.” You didn't give her a chance to say her goodbyes before abruptly ending the call. You were certain she could see straight through your lies but still stuck to it. Natasha had more important things to deal with then your silly cold right now. Thats what you had told yourself.
You flicked your phone onto silent and put it back onto the desk, screen facing down. You only had a couple of hours before you would have to set off on the short walk to the cinema. Sighing you laid your head in your arms, shielding yourself from the glaring white light above. All you needed was a short nap and you’d be fine. You’d wake up feeling much better and you would spend the rest of your evening with Natasha. Surely everything would go according to plan.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Everything did not go according to plan. When you next awoke you almost gasped as you read the time, 17:34. Why hadn't you set an alarm? You cursed at yourself for your own stupidity as you leaped up and stumbled towards the door, gripping onto the wall for support, the dizziness you felt was almost overwhelming. You looked yourself over in the closest mirror, there wasn't time to change now.
By some miracle, you had managed to make it to the compound entrance without collapsing. Stepping outside you immediately regretted your decision not to get changed as the cool summer breeze hit your skin, the sudden change in temperature irritating your nose as you sneezed twice towards your shoulder, “Hki'tshiew.. HHeh-kishoo!”
The cinema you were going to was only a short walk away but it seemed to take ages as you fumbled down the busy streets of New York, the loud sounds and bright lights only helped to intensify the mind-numbing ache at the back of your mind.
Thankfully you had seemed to finally adjust to the hustle and bustle around you and you turned onto the street where the cinema was situated. You could see Nat waiting patiently by the entrance and you couldn't help but quicken your pace.
“Y/N. Sweetheart, How was your day? Oh my, you look exhausted.” Nat's voice was full of concern as she looked over you, assessing your condition.
“Im fine, lets just go inside.” You offered, changing the subject as you led her inside the building, “How was work?”
“It was good.” Natasha had begun to answer,” Y/N are you sure-“
“Natasha Im fine.” You cut her off before she could finish her sentence, “Work was just a little tiring thats all.”
Thankfully she seemed to get the memo that you didn't want to talk about it and the pair of you paid for your tickets and made your way into the correct screening room.
You noticed that apart from the two of you, the room seemed to be empty. It didn't take you long to find your seats and you sat down beside your girlfriend. You could feel another tickle growing in your nose and you tried to discreetly rub your wrist against it in an attempt to ward it off.
Natasha had noticed this and turned to look at you saying, “Is your hayfever still-“
“Heh..Hh’hheh'tshiew! Hh.HeH'tcHIEW...”
“Bless you! Bless you!-”
“Heh..Hih'tktoo! Hh’ahktshoo! Hh-HehtchIEW!”
Your outburst seemed to irritate your burning throat causing you to break off into a set of deep chesty coughing. You were trying your best to muffle the sound and compose yourself as you heard the comforting voice of Natasha murmur softly into your ear,
“Sweetheart just relax. Try and take a deep breath.”
Thankfully this seemed to do the trick and you took gratefully accepted the pepsi in which Natasha was holding out in offering to you.
She waited for you to finish before looking into your eyes and gently asking, “This isn't just allergies is it?”
You didn't want to hide it anymore. God, you were far too tired to lie to her anymore. You sighed in defeat before shaking your head and saying, “I didn't want to ruin our plans.
“Oh, baby.” Natasha cooed as you laid your head against her shoulder, “You should’ve told me. I wouldn't have been mad.”
You let yourself sniff as the comforting words of your girlfriend sank in. You felt her hand come to rest on your forehead. You heard her breath hitch slightly as she registered just how hot you were.
“Your burning up.” She stated before her voice started to trail off. You knew she was speaking but her words seemed to slur together as you felt your eyes grow heavier and heavier then… darkness.
When you next opened your eyes, you saw the familiar ceiling of your bedroom staring down at you. How had you gotten here? You shifted in positions and you saw Natasha sitting in an armchair opposite your bed. She saw your movement and was by your side within an instant.
“Y/N. How do you feel?” She asked, her eyes scanning over you.
“Shit.” You manage to croak out as you began to shiver despite the fact you were beneath the quilts, “How did I even get here?” Your mind felt fuzzy as you tried to recall the events of what happened.
“You fell asleep, I carried you home and you’ve been sleeping since. Its almost 9 pm.” Natasha filled in the blanks before moving a fallen strand of hair from your face, “We can talk more when your feeling better. I need you to let me take your temperature though.”
You nodded and opened your mouth as Natasha pressed a small digital thermometer under your tongue. After a moment it beeped and Nat looked at the small screen before clicking her tongue, a worried expression dancing over her eyes.
“What is it?” You asked, already knowing it would be somewhat high.
“39.4, You need to take something for this otherwise I’ll be calling Banner to take a proper look at you.” Natasha responded before disappearing into your en-suite and reappearing moments later with a small handful of pills and a glass of water.
She offered it out to you buy you pushed her away as you sneezed into your palm “Hhkiktoo! Hheh'cHIEW! Hh'tshoo! Sorry, that was gross.”, you stammered out before reaching over for the tissue box on your nightstand.
“Stop apologising, bless you.” Natasha said, offering the pills back out to you, “Now can you take these for me darling.”
You did as you were told and took the pills earning yourself a smile from Nat. She kissed your cheek delicately before pulling away and saying, “Baby next time that you don't feel well please just tell me. Im your girlfriend. I deserve to know if your sick, I want to look after you.”
Her words stung your heart as you started to feel guilty that you hadn't told her earlier. “I'm sorry Natasha.” You apologised, looking up at her through your glassy eyes.
“You don't need to apologise,” She kissed you softly again, “I was just worried that's all.”
“I think I need to apologise to Wanda too.” You admitted quietly, feeling small tears form in the corner of your eyes, “I snapped at her earlier and I think I hurt her feelings.”
“You can do that when your feeling better. I’ll make sure she understands.” Nat's words comforted you as the guilt tugged at you. “You can do all of that once your well again. All you need to do for now is rest.”
You went to speak again but your voice got caught in your throat and you began to cough, trying your best to keep your head turned away from Nat. The last thing you wanted to do was get her sick too. You weren't sure when Natasha climbed beside you in bed but you were thankful when you felt her hand rub circles on your back as your coughing started to stop. She instructed you to take have another drink of water, which you did, and then she held you from behind and whispered into your ear, “Just try and go to sleep baby. Im going to be here when you wake up.”
You sniffled in response, turning over to cuddle into her chest. You felt Natasha rest her head against yours as she started to quietly murmur sweet nothings into you ear as sleep began to slowly lull you away.
“Goodnight ‘Tasha. I love you.” You whispered up to her, fatigue filling your voice as you fought to stay awake.
“I love you too Y/N. Now get some sleep.”
