Russia's highest-ranked women's tennis player, Daria Kasatkina, said in a video interview released Monday that she is dating a woman.
The French Open semifinalist's comments come as the Russian parliament discusses tightening already stringent restrictions on public discussions of LGBTQ relationships.
In the interview on YouTube with Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko, Kasatkina said "yes" when asked if she has a girlfriend.
Kasatkina added that she believes that "living in the closet" would not be sustainable long-term. "There is no point, it would always be going round in your head, until you say something. Obviously, each person decides how to open up and how much," Kasatkina said.
Soon after the interview was released, Kasatkina posted a picture on Instagram of her embracing Olympic silver medalist figure skater Natalia Zabiiako with a heart emoji and called Zabiiako "my cutie pie'' in a Twitter post. Zabiiako, who won her Olympic medal with the Russian team in 2018, posted the same picture on Instagram, also with a heart.
Since 2013, Russian law has forbidden any discussion of LGBTQ relationships which is deemed to constitute "promotion of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors. That has restricted LGBTQ advocacy or protest in public forums.
There is an effort by Russian lawmakers to broaden this law with a complete ban on "promotion" of LGBTQ relationships in a positive or neutral light and on showing LBGTQ content in cinemas.
The 25-year-old Kasatkina is ranked 12th in the world and lives and trains in Spain, where the interview was filmed. In the interview, she also calls for an end to fighting in Ukraine.
"For the war to end," Kasatkina said when asked what she wants most in life, and described the conflict as a "complete nightmare."
Russian authorities insist that the conflict is not referred to as a "war," but a "special military operation," and criticism of the war or the Russian military can be punished with fines or prison time.
Kasatkina is shown in the video crying when asked if she fears she may not be able to return to Russia after her comments in the interview.

Russian media is reporting that Natalia Zabiiako is coming out of retirement to skate with Zachary Daleman. The pair will represent Canada. This has not been confirmed by Zabiiako or Daleman.
Zabiiako was formerly paired with Alexander Enbert, with whom she competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics, winning silver in the team event, and the bronze at the 2019 Worlds.
Daleman placed 11th at the 2020 Junior Worlds with Patricia Andrew, and qualified for the later-cancelled 2021 Nationals with Justine Brasseur, who later retired.

Discover Daria Kasatkina: Russia's gay anti-war tennis star

Discover Daria Kasatkina: Russia's gay anti-war tennis star
Tumblr media
The gay, anti-war Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina chats to QNews ahead of the Australian Open.
Daria Kasatkina is the opposite of what many expect from a Russian athlete.
She is outspoken against the war and she came out as gay with her partner in 2022.
Both of these didn’t go down well with her government and a return home is currently off the cards.
However, a lot is going right in her life.
Dasha (as she is better known) is in a relationship with Estonian-Russian figure skater Natalia Zabiiako who won a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The pair have a successful YouTube channel where they show their lives behind the scenes of the glamorous but gruelling tennis tour.
Dasha has been ranked as high as no.8 in the world and will be competing at this month’s Australian Open.
We asked her about coming out, her life with Natalia (who also uses Natasha) and her hopes for the future.
You came out last year, what has the response been like from players and fans?
The response was better than I could ever imagine. I was ready for the worst reaction but instead, I’ve received so much support and love. And after that, I feel so relieved, it was the best decision I could make.
It seemed like your coming out was partly because of your partner Natalia, tell us about your relationship.
Natasha is the best person I could ever ask for. I’m often asking myself “Am I really deserving it?” I would say that being in a relationship with her and feeling all her support, pushed me for a decision to come out, because I felt ready and being with the right person.
You both have your fantastic YouTube channel, why did you decide to share your lives together so publicly?
We made this decision together. Natasha had her YouTube channel before and she wanted to keep going.
So we were just thinking of the concept for the channel and we came up with the idea of our life on the road, showing the behind-the-scenes of the tournaments which we thought could be interesting for fans.
She really enjoys filming, and editing and she does everything by herself. It’s not an easy thing to do, I’m really proud of her.
Has there been any challenges with the channel?
We were not sure where we can film and where we cannot, especially at the beginning. Because we didn’t know the policies of the tournaments and how people around going feel about it, but now we feel more free.
Of course, we always respect other people’s spaces and never filming when it’s inappropriate. Also challenging thing is to come to the players for an interview, especially for the ones who don’t know about our vlog, but in the end most of the time it ends successfully and we have fun interviews.

You’ve been living in Dubai, what has that experience been like?
I like Dubai, it’s a very modern city which develops so fast. I like the vibe and it’s a nice place where you can live, practice or have vacations.
Plus you can fly there from any part of the world, there’s always a direct flight from anywhere. And my friends and family can easily get there which in our circumstances is a huge plus.
You are coming Down Under for the Australian Open in Melbourne as well as the Brisbane tournament, do you enjoy visiting Australia?
Australia is an amazing place, people are amazing, it’s very modern. The only problem is that is so far away!
But I always enjoy my time in Australia and I was actually missing Brisbane for the past few years. To be honest most of us, we like Australia, it’s a really great place to be.
What are the fans like here in Australia compared to the rest of the world?
Fans in Australia are so nice! They give you the energy, it’s so important for the athletes.
They also know the culture of our sport and how to behave. I really appreciate them.
You’ve obviously had an incredible career so far, what are your goals for 2024?
My goals are simple: to stay healthy and enjoy the process.
All I want from myself is to be able to give 100% every day and be grateful for everything I have. I want to grow and improve as a person and as a player.
I really believe that that’s the way to achieve the things you want to.

As someone who has opposed the war in Ukraine and is out as gay, do you still find yourself being judged for being an athlete from Russia?
Tough to say. I want to be judged by my actions and the person I am, not by my passport.
If someone is judging me only based on my passport it’s completely their problem, not mine and says everything about this person. All I can do is try to be a better version of myself every day.
You’ve said before you would feel unsafe returning to Russia, are you hopeful you could go back one day?
Of course. You always have to hope and believe for the best. Doesn’t matter how it goes.
What do you hope for LGBTQIA+ people in Russia in the future?
I just hope that one day they can be themself without fear.

15 celebrities who came out in 2022 (so far)
New Post has been published on https://medianwire.com/15-celebrities-who-came-out-in-2022-so-far/
15 celebrities who came out in 2022 (so far)
National Coming Out Day has been celebrated every Oct. 11 since 1988. The first was held a year after the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, on Oct. 11, 1987. The march drew approximately 200,000 people, The New York Times reported.
In keeping with this decadeslong tradition of honoring those who embrace their full selves, NBC Out is celebrating the actors, athletes and other public figures who have come out publicly so far this year.
Rebel Wilson
In the midst of LGBTQ Pride Month in June, Rebel Wilson announced she is dating a woman. The actor, 42, shared an Instagram post beside her new love with the caption: “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince … but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess.”
Janelle Monáe
Musician and actor Janelle Monáe confirmed in April that she is nonbinary, meaning neither exclusively male nor female, and discussed what it means to her in an interview with “Red Table Talk,” a talk show hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith; her daughter, Willow Smith; and her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Monae said she uses both she/her and they/them pronouns.
John Cameron Mitchell
John Cameron Mitchell, star of the Peacock series “Joe vs. Carole,” revealed that he is nonbinary in a March interview with Pride.com. Mitchell, who is perhaps best known as the star and creator of the 2001 cult classic “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” told Los Angeles magazine in June that he continues to use he/him pronouns.
Jerrod Carmichael
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael publicly came out as gay in his HBO special “Rothaniel,” which premiered in April and was taped in February at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. The special weaves stories of Carmichael’s family history with his own coming out process.
Charlee Corra
Charlee Corra, a member of the Disney family, came out publicly as transgender in March and condemned anti-LGBTQ state bills. Corra, who uses “he” and “they” pronouns, and their family also announced this year that they would match up to $500,000 in donations to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group.
Ellia Green
Ellia Green, one of the stars of Australia’s gold medal-winning women’s rugby sevens team at the 2016 Olympics, announced in August that he is a transgender man. Green said realizing that sharing his experience could be lifesaving for others is what compelled him to come out publicly.
Chrishell Stause
“Selling Sunset” star Chrishell Stause confirmed her relationship with nonbinary Australian musician G Flip in May, during the season five reunion episode of the popular real estate reality show. Stause then opened up about their relationship in a video shared on Instagram: “I know that some of you won’t understand this or agree with this, but for me, it is about the person. It is about their heart.”
Jake Daniels
English soccer player Jake Daniels revealed he is gay in May in a trailblazing moment for the European men’s game. The 17-year-old forward made the announcement at the end of his first season as a professional player with the second-division club Blackpool.
Daria Kasatkina
Russia’s highest-ranked women’s tennis player, Daria Kasatkina, said in a video interview in July that she is dating a woman. Soon after the interview was released, Kasatkina posted a picture on Instagram of her embracing Olympic silver medalist figure skater Natalia Zabiiako with a heart emoji and called Zabiiako “my cutie pie” in a Twitter post.
Bosco
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant Bosco, who appeared in season 14 of the reality competition show, came out as transgender in February. In a message shared on Instagram, Bosco revealed she would use both she/her and they/them pronouns out of drag and said, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”
Aunjanue Ellis
Oscar-nominated “King Richard” star Aunjanue Ellis, 53, has been open about her sexuality to her friends and family for decades, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that she addressed her bisexuality publicly. In March, she donned a red Dolce & Gabbana suit jacket with the word “Queer” spelled out in rhinestones on the jacket’s left arm. The subtle sign wasn’t widely noticed, but the actor then discussed her sexuality in an interview with Variety that was published in June, describing herself as both bisexual and queer.
Maybelle Blair
Maybelle Blair, a 95-year-old former baseball player who helped inspire the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” is living proof that it’s never too late to embrace your authentic self. Blair came out publicly this year after serving as a consultant for Amazon Prime’s very queer TV reboot of the decades-old film.
Jena Malone
Actor Jena Malone revealed in an August Instagram post that she had been “learning a new way” to articulate her sexuality and was “using words to guide me not define me.” She then said: “Finding words that feel more right to explore in my telling. Pansexuality. Sapiosexuality. Polyamory.”
Jasmine Kennedie
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant Jasmine Kennedie, who appeared in season 14 of the reality competition show, came out as transgender in February. In an emotional episode of “Untucked,” Kennedie tearfully revealed, “I am trans, and I’ve been so scared to say that.”
Luke Baines
“Shadowhunters” actor Luke Baines shared on Instagram in June that he has “been lucky enough to have been in love twice — the first with a woman, the second with a man. Label that however you like, but all I know is that… love is love. Happy pride!”
