My Review of Flowers of Evil
How did I get into this anime? Because Flowers of Evil is something no one says, “Oh I want to see that, this looks like a masterpiece”! Oh, I was well familiar with the rotoscope nightmare stories from this and hoped to God my randomizer wouldn’t curse me with watching Flowers of Evil. I was however intrigued to learn that there was a yandere in this anime that’s on Yuno Gasai AND Shion Sonozaki levels. But intrigue can only get me so far when you spend 13 episodes watching…
THIS!
No this is not an exaggeration. Everyone has this kind of cringe face throughout the entire anime series. Be afraid children.
So the story is about this guy named Takao Kasuga. He loves to read and he loves the class smarty-pants Nanako Saeki. He doesn’t just love her, he sees her as his muse and his Venus and all that bullshit. But this is an admiration from afar. Pretty sure Saeki doesn’t even know he exists! One day, Kasuga forgets his book in his classroom. And on the ground, he notices a gym bag that belongs to Saeki. Oh come on, he’s not gonna go down the perverted route and steal a girl’s gym…
So he steals Saeki’s gym uniform. And surprise, one person knew what happened. The class loner, Nakamura! She forces Kasuga to form a contract with her. It wasn’t written or anything, just verbal. However, that doesn’t stop Nakamura from forcing Kasuga to do whatever she wants. But does Nakamura really like Kasuga or is she just into torturing this shit-faced pervert?
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: You know, I’m too thrown off by the animation here that it has temporarily paralyzed me from catching voices or even giving a damn. I’m familiar with only two of the cast mates and the rest is literally my first time hearing it. Okay, I have one comment here. I often forget Mariya Ise could do some damn-ass scary characters like Nakamura. And when she does those murderous screams, forget about it! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Kasuga is played by Shinichirou Ueda
*Saeki is played by Yoko Hikasa (known for Bea on Pokemon Journeys, Rias on High School DxD, Mio on K-ON!, Hina on Domestic Girlfriend, Kirigiri on Danganronpa, Frieda on Attack on Titan, and Diana on Little Witch Academia)
*Nakamura is played by Mariya Ise (known for Bonnie on Pokemon XY, Levy on Fairy Tail, Ray on The Promised Neverland, Stocking on Panty & Stocking, Mika on Durarara, Dorothy on Black Clover, and Yuuko on Yuri on Ice)
SHIPPING: Oh please, anime Gods, do not turn this into another School Days fiasco. I find myself praying for this a lot these days. But in this anime’s case, please do not go down that route!
So, it was clear from episode one that Kasuga had a crush on Saeki. But this got very perverted very fast when he stole her gym clothes and that lead to the contract with Nakamura. Now is Nakamura romantically invested in Kasuga or is she just a crazy bitch. Let’s chalk this up to a 50-50 split here.
It wasn’t until the fourth episode where Kasuga and Saeki actually spoke to each other. And one episode later, they go on a date and end up in a relationship. One has to wonder if Kasuga would have one day acted on his own and ask Saeki out. All of this happened because he was being forced by that psychopath Nakamura. She tortured this kid and forced him to do so many unethical things. Stripping him naked and putting Saeki’s uniform on him for one! Who does that? So would Kasuga have done these sporadic actions if Nakamura wasn’t in the picture? After he stole that uniform, anything is possible. Now here’s the crazy shit here, Saeki loves Kasuga and she doesn’t care that he stole her gym uniform and did fuck-knows-what with it. She’s mad that Kasuga hid it, but still loves him.
Girl, the fuck is wrong with you?! You must be some special kind of crazy!
By the end of this series, you do see a shift in Kasuga and who he wants to chase after. Saeki or Nakamura?! Let’s just say that during a running away scene, Kasuga was going to go home with Saeki until he saw Nakamura and he chases after her. That’s a pretty good sign that Kasuga has switched gears on who he likes. I won’t delve any further than that as the anime only gives us so much and the rest of this love turmoil between these three characters is covered only in the manga. Probably a sign I should read the manga!
LOOOOOONG NO DIALOGUE MOMENTS: Dude, I know you’re trying to set the mood for certain moments, but I think you can dial it back a bit. This complaint isn’t just what happened at the beginning of episode 9; it took forever to get the main gist of this story in the very first episode. I had no idea what the main premise of the story was until the last five minutes of the first episode when Kasuga stole Saeki’s gym uniform.
Now I’m not knocking serious moments where there is no dialogue between characters for a long period of time and we just watch the animation of them walking or doing something. Hell, Neon Genesis Evangelion had famous scenes like that. But the elevator scene didn’t last six fucking minutes. Neither did the scene where Shinji kills Kaowru. In episode 9, we watch Nakamura and Kasuga walking from the school to home and watch the whole walk after destroying the classroom. I guarantee you, you could leave this episode running, fix yourself a bowl of cereal and toast, eat it up, go to the bathroom to have a good yank, then finish it off with watching a Che Guevara documentary…and Nakamura and Kasuga would still be walking home! I’m exaggerating and I don’t care. I feel like being an asshole here.
OH DEAR GOD, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!: Very rarely will I ever look at an opening or ending theme song in literal fear. In fact, the last one to be so morbid was with Attack on Titan’s second season ending. I mean, the imagery alone should tell you that this is full of spoilers and possessed by the devil itself. Now that I think about it, that’s still undefeated. But Flowers of Evil’s ending theme is a close fucking second. Have you heard this thing? It sounds like Bjork singing in Japanese, synthesized, while a cat walks on a keyboard and having a seizure at the same time. Thank God there are no actual visuals for this other than the flower featured on Kasuga’s book. I don’t think we can handle anymore animation from this nightmare fuel.
ENDING: The writing is on the wall!
And the floor, the ceiling…that classroom is just a fucking mess!
Kasuga’s one bad deed led to another and another in a domino effect. And instead of a little devil on his shoulder, he has a classmate that’s a sociopath. Kasuga has guilt about hiding so much from Saeki in this relationship and he wants to tell her everything he did. Nakamura says, “Nah, you’re going to write it all over the classroom and let the whole world know what a piece of shit you are”. Let’s just say Nakamura and Kasuga went overboard and completely destroyed their classroom. Kasuga gets a bit of a lucky break as the other vandalism covered up his name on the chalkboard confession. But two people have caught onto Kasuga’s crime, Saeki and Kasuga’s mother.
Saeki put two and two together when she noticed the ink smearing on the ground resembled the flower art work on Kasuga’s book “Flowers of Evil” and her stolen gym uniform was placed right there. As for Kasuga’s mother, she put two and two together when she heard what happened to his classroom and noticed Kasuga’s behavior and dirty clothes from the night of the crime. Won’t be long before everyone knows what Kasuga did.
What now, shit-face?
Run away with Nakamura to the next town. Yeah, why the fuck not?! Saeki ends up tracking them down and tried to convince them to come back and for Kasuga to be truthful. Saeki wants Kasuga and I almost want to say the same, except hanging around this psycho-bitch for a while has caused him to try to stop Nakamura from leaving. Having Saeki see Kasuga go after Nakamura isn’t really a good look! At this point, it really feels like his love for Saeki was nothing more than lust.
Dude, isn’t there a rule about not messing with crazy…like, don’t stick your dick in crazy?! This dude has got one crazy bitch on psycho-yandere levels and the other that’s about to turn into Kotonoha from School Days in about five seconds. Well, no one left town today as the police were called to look for Saeki because her parents are overprotective types and they take the other kids in.
We get a small time-leap of one month after the night in the police station. Nakamura’s been ignoring Kasuga and Kasuga ends his relationship with Saeki. Dude, stop trying to stick your dick in crazy! Kasuga tries to speak to Nakamura again and it fails. So he visits her at home and meets Nakamura’s father and grandmother. Then, he sneaks into her room and reads her private journal that talks about Kasuga a lot. Dude, you are stepping in uncharted territory! Drop the journal and get the fuck out before Nakamura comes home. So Nakamura comes in her room and finds shit-face reading her journal.
*sighs*
First, I would like to acknowledge that Mariya Ise has one hell of a throat to scream as much as this crazy bitch does. Second, the fuck did I just say, ya dumbass?! Here we get another chase scene between Kasuga and Nakamura. What follows is…I can’t place my thoughts on this. Weird imagery, out of place dialogue, and possible scenes of future stuff to happen! A rape scene involving Saeki, a festival, a hideout, a knife, and fire! Thanks for the cryptic message guys, really appreciate it! Either the anime ran out of money or they’re fucking with the audience. Kasuga says he wants to form a contract with Nakamura and that’s the end!
Hmm, this anime came out in 2013 and it is now 2021. All the buildup and no word on a sequel! We all know that sequel ain’t ever coming. You have a better chance of a continuation to Haruhi Suzumiya than you do with this hunk of shit.
Okay, maybe ‘hunk of shit’ is too mean. This wasn’t a terrible anime. It was weird as fuck, the animation leaves a bad impression, but overall it wasn’t that bad. Now the manga to Flowers of Evil is a favorite to many. Probably because the characters don’t look like a cringey meme and there aren’t so many awkward pauses with no dialogue. Unless there’s a whole volume of Flowers of Evil out there where we just look at pictures of Nakamura and Kasuga walking home where they don’t say a fucking thing! I am not letting that go! Charlie Brown movies didn’t go to that level you guys did!
I was interested with each passing episode to see what Nakamura was going to do next and what she was capable of. I couldn’t make out if she was going to be homicidal or suicidal or just impact psychological warfare on her prey. It was the latter for this series, but I heard of some attempted seppuku going down in the manga. I’d like to think maybe one day a different studio would pick up this series, but I seriously doubt it with the rotten reception this adaptation received. It was said that the director to the anime saw this more as a live-action series than an anime and that’s why we have the rotoscope animation. It wasn’t until 2019 that we got a live-action adaptation to Flowers of Evil. Not sure how people felt about that adaptation, but even I have a feeling that it was much better than the anime. Hell, a Netflix adaptation probably would have turned out a better product. It would be nice for this to get a reboot, different studio, different director, and smash everything that has the word ‘rotoscope’ on it
Yeah, if you can get over watching the animation, give it a watch. Episode one drags, but it picks up the second Nakamura confronts Kasuga.
If you would like to watch Flowers of Evil, Crunchyroll and Hidive have all 13 episodes available for streaming.
Okay, now that I’m finished with that sociopathic nightmare let’s pick another Sentai Filmworks anime.
HELL NO! I am not reviewing, “My Teacher Accidentally Made Me Horny”. That’s what I’m calling it and you should all do the same. NEXT!
Okay…I have no idea what the hell this anime is, but it looks harmless enough.

Cress and Shupaa: Al Coda
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
You get the call early in the evening. "Hey, so remember how I said your friend was bad news?"
Passer Luteus doesn't call you often. When he does, he sounds as if someone had hit the fast-forward button on his mouth. "Guess what! She's bad news! She totally ditched you!" This isn't news to you. You're somewhat glad he's figured out the truth. You tighten a loose screw on the back of your arm, and latch the panel shut.
"Continue."
"I guess you weren't good enough for her, because she picked up someone new-"
"Someone new?" Your heart stops. "Yeah, it's a local, friend of a friend! Do you know a Lanius?"
You tuck your phone into the divot of your shoulder, rolling down your sleeve gain and grabbing your coat and belt. You don't need anything else. You scribble a quick note in case Nana comes looking for you - "Errand, back soon" and you're out the door in a second.
"Shrike."
"Yeah, that's the one!" You have to switch shoulders.
"When?"
"A day or so ago? News isn't instant, you know. They seem pretty hot on the tail of their new deal, they left town in a hurry in the morning."
The morning. That means they've had the whole daytime to track. You have a few hours left until your meeting with Cress, but that's too much time. You could already be too late.
"Do not go looking for trouble," you warn, as you finally clasp your coat and start with your belt. You can make the next train if you run for it.
"Oh, don't worry, I won't! I just thought you might be interested to know, since, you know, I don't want you getting fucked over. Besides, between you and Shrike-"
"Do not finish that thought."
"Right." He clears his throat. "Anyway, I don't know much more than that."
"That is more than enough."
"You owe me double, though!" "Noted," you promise. Without giving him a chance to reply, you hang up, pocket your phone, and make a break for it. As soon as you're on the train, blessedly over land, you make another call. You hope Cress will pick up. You hope she can pick up.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
Torrent interrogation rooms, like most interrogation rooms, are radio blocked. No service gets in or out because the risk of being tracked is too great. Ghoulisar's not as secure as Arkady, but IPC still shells out for security for their prisoners. It's something you appreciate usually.
Ghoulisar is crawling with scimitars, which makes a rowdy prisoner easier to deal with. That being said, it was hell on your social media life. No calls, no texts, no instacrab, everything's sealed off so that it's only when you leave you can check your messages.
You're to meet Maera later that day, so you think you've got a spot of time before hand to get a snack and visit the park first. You pull out your phone and- of course. It's battery is dead. You must have forgotten to switch it to power save mode and left it open to crush candy heads again. You can go to a coffee shop and borrow a charger probably.(edited)
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
No answer. You try a second time before giving up, and spending the rest of your train ride pacing. This is the fastest way you can get to the meeting spot, and then... Then what? You don't have a plan. You have no idea where she is. She meant to work today. You remember that she mentioned it while you were scheduling a time.
You could go to the nearest Torrent building, and start there, but otherwise, you're missing any kind of lead. You just don't know enough, and you don't have enough time to learn. You examine the map on the wall of the train, inch by inch, triangulating the best places to stop for the quickest routes. How many likely spots can you reach from this station? Can you reach more?
How long will it take you to check each one? Amidst your scrutiny, however, one stop stands out - the station just down the block from the Ghoulisar Grindhouse. Cress said it was her favorite. You can't bank on that, you have no reason to think she would be there, rather than anywhere else... but your instinct tells you to check. You get off at the next stop, and it doesn't come soon enough. After that, you're running.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
You hear Maera long before you see her. You're walking down to the coffee station, but there's no mistaking the sound of alarm, much much higher than what you'd expect to see running down the street. "What-" you start, holding your hands up in bewilderment.
"Maera, what's going on? Is everything alright?"
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
"No," you say, bluntly, and grab her hand. Hey, if she can do it, so can you. "You must go." You somehow manage to speak in monotone while being on-edge and winded. Wherever she was going, she can't go there. She can't go anywhere ordinary, because Shrike would know everything you know about her. You need to disrupt her usual patterns. You need... The gym. There's one two blocks away that you've visited a few times. "Follow."(edited)
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
You're thrown as she grabs your hand and starts pulling you in a direction. "What? What's happening?"
You've all been drilled in case of an attack or an emergency. It's the Scimitars that take charge in that case- they're the ones specially trained for life or death situations. But nothing was ever real- you've used a drill to flirt with a soldier or too, but this was very different. You cast a glance around at the crowd. What was going on? The crowd makes it hard to sort through everyone's emotions, and Maera's so loud. You stumble as you follow her.
"Where are we going?" you ask, hushed.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
"Gym," you say, shortly, only looking back to make sure she's still there. You know she can run! You saw her do it!
"No time, explain later, run now."
You could blame Nanako for your short words, but really, you always had it in you. You can't drag Cress. You have to depend on her coming with you, trusting you, and that's the biggest wildcard of all. "Please."(edited)
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
You swallow as you look at her. She's panicked, you believe that. Is it some sort of a trap? You're not sure, but from what you know of her, who she is and what she thinks of you, you think probably not. You start running. Was someone after you? Again? You haven't noticed anyone following you like you heard Maera- you just came off an IPC campus.
Who's that brash? Have you noticed any repeat melodies lately? There were a few tense moments, but people had tense moments. Repeated? Maera pulls you on the narrow side walk and as you bump past other pedestrians and the next thing you know, as someone shoulders you, something hard and sharp jams into your stomach and suddenly you can't quite breathe.
The moment passes too slow to be real- you make eye contact when you realize your mistake. You should have been listening for boredom. You let go of Maera's hand to grab your assailant when they take hold of the thing in your stomach and pull. It feels like your insides are coming with it, and you shriek, pushing fear, despair, whatever it was you were feeling right now, hard.(edited)
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
You don't have psychic resistance, and you don't have time to cover your ears. The time between Cress letting go of your hand and her shriek is less than a second, even though it feels so much longer. This means, when all her despair and pain washes over you, it instantly trips your override, and your artificial psi is gone.
But you learned from last time. You were left without a weapon last time, and you won't make the same mistake again. Your head clears first, when your emotions rapidly switch off, and you draw the laser pistol at your hip. Through the crowd, everyone under indigo is doubled over with pain, and you see one person still trying to move. You push through.
With your free arm, you shove people out of the way, keeping a hand on your gun and your finger outside the trigger. Shrike sees you coming. Through pain and anguish, they stumble and slip out of your way, racing down the street. You only get a clear enough shot to burn the back of their leg.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
Your assailant slips through your fingers, ringing with the same note you’re screaming and you hit the ground hard. Maera takes a shot- you triggered her emotional override, you can hear the static- but it’s the wet indigo on your stomach that takes up all the space in your head as you gulp for air. T
ears well up and you sob and wail again, pressing your hands to your stomach. It hurts to breathe- it hurts to do anything. Was this fatal? You’ve never been stabbed before.
Air comes in short gasps as you reach for Maera. You don’t want her to give pursuit. She better not leave you alone.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
You very nearly consider it, but logic wins out. Shrike can't hide forever. If you want to kill him, you can try later, when you have the advantage. Instead, you return to Cress, who is reaching for you like a pitiful wriggler, while she assails the ears of every troll in range.
This is the more pertinent concern. You can't feel her emotions anymore - they're much too strong - but you can feel the weight of them in the air around you, like the blowback of a confined fire, buffeting you over and over again.
"Apply pressure." You kneel with her, and scoop your arms under her shoulders. "You are not safe yet. You are not safe here."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
It's an immense relief when she turns back to you, hoisting you up to your unsteady feet. The wound gushes when you're hoisted upright and you whimper as you try and press it back in. It's a lot of indigo. You have a lot of indigo in your wardrobe and your make up, and while technically you know there'd be a lot inside you it's very different to actually see it outside of you.
You kick off your heels with little regret as you stifle your sobs. This probably can't kill you right? You've heard about your castemates sustaining multiple stab wounds and surviving.
You just never imagined it'd hurt this bad. You're going to have to toss the outfit. You lean heavily on Maera, slinging your arm around her neck as you press the wound with your other hand.
You stifle the voodoos- it's just another thing to hold in, and the sound of everyone's sustained despair is a lot to deal with on top of everything else. You tuck your face into the crook of Maera's neck and cry a little quieter.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
If your jacket wasn't blood-resistant, and if you could feel anything, you might be more upset about this. As the crowd around you starts to scatter, trying to get as far from your location as possible, you wrap your arms around Cress to steady her. She... cries into your shoulder. This is very familiar.
"There, there," you say, stiff, and pat her on the back with a rigid hand. She needs medical attention. There's a good chance she'll survive, but she needs attention, because Shrike wasn't aiming to injure. If they pierced anything critical, she could be in real danger, even with her blood as cold as it is.
"Would the Scimitars' medic take you?" You don't know if Torrent has one, but judging by how distraught she seemed (rather than frustrated or annoyed, which would be your feelings) you can only assume this doesn't happen often.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
She's wrapped her arms around you and patted you down the most awkward way possible, which considering you're still bleeding, you don't really care about. Her emotional override is still on- it's a good attempt and you're almost amused enough to laugh. If you weren't in pain.
"Yeah," you mumble, pained, into her shoulder. "Yeah they'll take me. Ugh."
You're leaving a literal blood trail through the city. The passerby watch as you stagger on by, curious, concerned. Some amused even, and who you snarl at.
"Not a zoo," you try to snap, but your voice isn't very strong. You push voodoo behind it anyway, and the crowd scatters.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
You're strong - conditionally. It means that, in the moment, you have the strength to support and move heavy things, but you don't have the strength to hold them up. Given that you're already a good percentage metal, the extra weight of Cress - dense highblood, minus some blood - leaning on you is pushing the limit of what you can take.
Still, you push on, because as long as you keep moving, it isn't quite so bad. The good news is that you had already started in the direction of the Scimitar campus, when you got her to run with you. The bad news is that it's still a long walk away. Cress, to her credit, keeps going, even though she's very clearly in pain. (You think. Most people would be, upon getting stabbed, but you know she's a good actor, so who knows?)
When you get to the gates, you unlatch them carefully, one-handed, because the other one is holding Cress up. You then pull her inside, closing it behind you, and start the shorter journey up to the medic's building.
"There will be less staring here," you murmur. "Many are away or busy, at the moment. You can relax. We are almost there." You don't tell her about the walking you have yet to do. You just keep going.
"Do you wish to wipe your eyes before going in?" Her makeup ran. You catch glimpses of it when she lifts her head. She cares about her appearance, and you don't know if being stabbed changed that. You're... trying to care.(edited)
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
The trip is longer than you remembered it. You've never looked down at the pavement for so long, but you watch every inch that you trawl. Maera brings up your eyes and you start.
"Oh no," you whisper. "I must look like a mess."
Oh this will garner rumor mongering if anything did- you, staggering into a scimitar base after getting stabbed, assisted by a near stranger- you thank your lucky stars you had the good sense to at least list maera as a contact of yours. You distangle yourself from Maera to lean on the gate, wiping your face with your sleeve- your shirt's ruined anyway!! Your eyeliner's waterproof but your mascara is not, and the white sleeve of your uniform comes back with black smears.
"Oh," you fret. "Oh." There's no coming back from this one.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
You cover her mouth, and motion for quiet. Drawing more attention at this time would distress her. You take her to the bench, just outside the medic's office, and help her sit. With your fingers, carefully, you wipe away the stray mascara that you can - since you can see it. She can't.
Now that you're calm, your override clicks off. Emotion floods back to you: Concern, frustration, and a little bit of fear. With these, just as usual, your artificial psi begins "leaking," turning your fingers and your breath cold. You take off your gloves. When you touch your thumbs to the bottom of her eyelids, the swelling there dies down. This way, you're able to make her eyes look less purple around the edges, where they aren't supposed to.
And just to finish it off, you blow a puff of cold air onto both of her cheeks, to cool them too. It's not a kiss, not quite, but it's close and gentle. You can't be too harsh. You don't want to freeze her.
"You must live through this." You look her in the eyes. "Otherwise, Lyrian wins. Yes?" She seems pretty motivated to not let that happen.(edited)
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
Maera's gentle as she sits you down. Her override turns off, so you can hear a cautious melody, full of concern and fear and frustration as she presses her hands to your face. Her touch is cool.
It feels nice against your slightly swollen face, and she's steady as she looks you in the face and tells you to live. You blink twice and swallow, then remember that- yeah you might be dying. Perhaps it's not the right time to worry about your make up.
"Yeah," you say a little breathily. "Let's go before I pass out."
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/11/2019
"Let us," you agree, and you help her to her feet. Gut wounds are serious. The one fatal flaw of flesh bodies is that they are made to die. Blood doesn't matter, at that point.
They're fragile, if you know where to hit, and Shrike certainly does. They're in the same business you are. But, as the medic tells you, it's not as bad as it could have been. There are worse weapons out there, and you brought her directly here. If you had waited longer, if Shrike had picked something more vicious, her wound might have been much worse. Which does leave you wondering: why didn't they?
You hang back while the medic works, up to the point where they shoo you out for the surgery. They need to fix the wound, so it doesn't become infected, and so it can heal properly. You understand, and it isn't your concern, really. You wish you believed in luck, so you could wish good luck to her. But you don't, so you don't. You only take her hands, like she held yours on the train.
"Do not die," you say, helpfully. It's supposed to be a joke.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/11/2019
You do, actually laugh when she says that. Not very loudly, or strong, but it's there. You give her hand a squeeze, and a groan when the laugh hurts. You turn to the mediculler.
"She's registered as my informant," you mumble at them. "And also she saved my life so she can stay right?" You glance at Maera. She's still holding your hand, you realize distantly. "If-if she wants, I mean."
The mediculler looks up at her, then back down at you before they place a mask on your face. "Certainly. Now count backwards from ten." You're out, almost before you start counting.(edited)
March 12, 2019
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You don't let go of her hand until she's out. When she is, you step back, and you let the mediculler work. When Cress is patched up, the mediculler lets you sit by her, and wait for her to wake. They're not busy today - fewer Scimitars on campus to get hurt - so the office is relatively quiet. You take the time to start a new file in your memory on Shrike's attack, gathering the info you know and putting it all in one place.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
Anesthesia is one hell of a drug. Quite literally really. It’s quite lucky you know what this feeling is or you’d be quite a bit more freaked out about it when you come to, a dull ache radiating from your stomach.
“Ugh,” you mutter quietly. “What happened?” You’re in a medbay, not Arkady’s medbay, you got stabbed- you glance around the room. Oh Maera’s still here. You can’t quite explain what a relief that is.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
Oh, good. "Welcome back to the world of the living."
On second thought, that probably sounds much more ominous in your monotone. Oh well. Too late now. You close down your files and look over at her.
"You were stabbed. There is good news and bad news. Do you wish to select which news to hear first?"
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You laugh, weakly. She sounds like a robot. Not a surprise but somehow, funny. “Good news,” you say. “Thanks.”
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You emote, just slightly, by raising one eyebrow. She has no idea what she's thanking you for. You'll fix that, and then she can reconsider her gratitude.
"The good news is that you were attacked by an assassin who goes by the name 'Shrike.' They are known for being particularly vicious, and they favor stab wounds. They escaped while you were incapacitated." You're a ray of fucking sunshine.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
Laughter escapes you again. You don’t bother trying to keep it in. It’s like trying to catch a bag full of marbles that just burst in mid air.
“Is that what you think good news is?” you ask, still laughing as you put a hand to your face. “What’s the bad news then?”
They’ve escaped, the Shrike. What a name. You’re missing something but your head is too fuzzy to grasp it quite yet.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
Nothing you said is funny. Why is she laughing? This is stupid. "The bad news is that Lyrian Aubade hired them."
You have your suspicions. You don't voice them yet. You can launch an investigation later, with more time and more resources, because you have every intention of hunting Shrike anyway. You want to see how she takes this, first. "Comparatively, the first news was better."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
The bad news drops and you laugh anyway. Of course it was her! Why wouldn’t it be her? Your life was just fine before she showed up and now she was apparently going to haunt every corner of it until- until- you don’t even know. You put your hands to your face as tears slide down your face through your laughter. You don’t know what you’re going to do about any of this.
“Oh, geez,” you manage to say. “I’m very sorry I think I’m just a little hysterical. Ow.” Your stomach twinges from the place where you got stabbed. You burst into laughter again.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
The answer to "how will she take this news" is "bad," as it turns out. You, being unstabbed, are a hell of a lot more calm. Is she... crying? "This is an option," you concede.
"The only remaining option is that your sense of humor is terrible. Therefore, it behoves you to be hysterical."
Your bedside manner is shit. Your manner, in general, is shit. You get up from the chair you were sitting on, and move it back to its original position in the small waiting area.
"The mediculler says you will recover. However, you cannot recover if you continue to aggravate your wound. You must stop laughing. Think of things that are not funny."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
Think of things that are not funny. Think of things that are not funny. Robot Joanes here was not helping.
“Ow,” you say between breaths. “Ow. Ow. Don’t say anything. Ow.” It does, turn out, that pain isn’t very funny when it’s your own, and finally you calm down. “I know you don’t mean it like you say it,” you tell Maera, tapping your ear. “But the contrast is very funny.”
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"The earlier statement, referring to your sense of humor as functional, is now retracted."
That one isn't intended to be a joke. You're only kind of offended. Your gloves are tucked into your belt. They have blood on them. Actually, most of your side has been bloodied, with some of the crisp green lines hidden by dark patches of indigo. You'll clean up later. For now, though, you rest your hands on the bed. Your first inclination is to touch her cheek, but that seems overfamiliar. You have no reason to. Instead, your fingers hold each other, as you try not to do anything stupid. You might call this feeling "hesitance."
"Your abilities are quite potent." Nice. Great going. "Displays such as this have not been seen in psychics often."
By you, you mean. You don't have the data. Do you clarify that? Absolutely not. How else would you sound stiff as a board?
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You rub your face. Okay you don't actually know what she's trying to get at with that. "Oh yeah," you say. "Sorry about that. But have you never heard about what happens in a carnival? That was small potatoes really."
You grope around the bed to see if there's something you can do to push the bed up so you can see Maera without craning your neck or staring at her out of the corner of your eye. You shift, painfully, as the bed creaks up, moving slowly. You'd hit that morphine button with no problem right now but you want to keep a clear head, what with attempts on your life.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"Carnivals are avoided as much as possible, as are the trolls who attend them."
You were assigned to track and capture a clown once. Never again. The smell of hairspray flamethrowers burning rubber animals is a distinct and lasting memory.
"They tend to be... 'more trouble than they are worth.'" You tip your head just slightly to one side. "Do you attend a carnival? You do not seem the type."
As in, she doesn't wear face paint. You can't speak to her attitude. Her earlier laughter makes you think she might fit.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You sigh as you shake your head. You've heard that question before. "No," you say.
"I don't see the appeal. As you said, more trouble than they're worth." Something's still bothering you though. You blink as you try and put it together.
"Hey," you say. "How did you know someone was after me?"
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You take a moment's silence to think of how to word your answer, before replying.
"Very few things happen in a way that does not affect or alert others. Previously, interest was shown in Lyrian's dealings. There was a phone call today which communicated, in code, that she had made a deal with Shrike."
You pause. "There were several attempts made to reach you, before arrival on the scene. You did not answer your phone. Sensitive information is not usually transferred over phones. However, at times it will be used for short-notice or emergency contacts, with minimal information given.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
“Oh,” you say, considering this information for a moment. “Empress. Well, thank you. I don’t know what would have happened if you weren’t there.” You fall silent. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination. The Shrike had pulled out the knife- would they have stabbed it again? If you had collapsed, voodooing everyone in range, would anyone else have helped you get to safety?
On the other hand, Lyrian explicitly informed Maera not to kill you. You didn’t think your last encounter was enough for her to change tactics. Putting Maera by your side would be an excellent way to ensure your survival and perhaps the phone call was from Lyrian, and Maera was just playing you.
Or Lyrian knows Maera would help and is just using her as a tool again. Ugh. You’ll keep the thought in mind but you’re not dealing with a potential double agent situation while you’re incapacitated and alone with said possible double agent.
“Empress,” you say softly instead. “I almost died.”
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"That tends to happen when trolls are stabbed." You know from experience. You feel concerned. You almost stopped Shrike, but now Cress is injured, and Shrike is still out there. This makes Cress an easy target. She still has her voodoos, but she wouldn't be able to run. Today was a realization of your worst fear of the situation: that Lyrian doesn't intend to stop.
"The Shrike is not subtle. It is likely that their next move will also draw attention. Watch will be kept."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
“I-“ you blink, stop and take a couple of deep breaths, trying to stay calm. “I need to report this, probably?” You pause. Word of this is going to get out. You’re going to need to explain what’s going on to Professor Symphy. You can’t deny it, you got stabbed and treated on an IPC medic. You glance at Maera. You’re out of familiar waters here.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You have few answers. You don't know why she's looking at you, the only thing you know how to do is dodge the law. But... "Most likely. This concerns you, though. Why? Do you fear what Torrent might think of your activities?"
You know better than to believe an Imperial organization would truly be fair, but Cress is... not a troublemaker. You don't know if she's ever crossed a serious rule in her life. Maybe she's just acting, though. It's possible. "How many psychics must you speak with?"
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You blink for a moment.
“It’s Torrent,” you say, like it answers everything. Then you realize that Arkady is a closed campus and that information about you doesn’t really circulate.
“It’s the Imperial Psion Corp,” you explain. “And basically everyone is a highblood. Does that answer that? Even the receptionists have some sort of psychic punch.”
They’d have to, if they didn’t want to be driven crazy by all the mind shit that happened around campus.
“It wouldn’t be so easy to pick my brain though,” you say. Her other question though isn’t so easy to explain. “I mean I just don’t want anyone to know I have a signmate,” you say. A signmate that’s older, scarier, stronger.
“It’s Torrent,” you say again like it explains anything.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"Yes," you say, intending it to be sarcastic, even though that... doesn't translate at all. "Torrent. Torrent, that is very well-known and welcoming to outsiders, known for being transparent. That Torrent." Really, you should feel bad for giving her a hard time, right after she was stabbed. You do, a little bit.(edited)
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
“Ugh,” you say and scowl at her. You know what she means. How do you explain something you’ve always loved with? And to someone who might be a double agent? “I mean people in Torrent are always looking to see what you can use against each other. Lyrian is definitely something you can use against me.” You stare up at the ceiling. Signmates are weird.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You think about this for a good minute of silence. Then, suddenly, you speak up again: "Are you able to change the story?" You live for being abrupt and blunt. It's just how you roll. You watch her face as she scrutinizes the ceiling tiles. They're not that exciting. "Others did not see the incident as it occurred. Perhaps you could... adjust the circumstances. Must you speak of Lyrian at all? She did not carry the knife."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You almost roll your eyes. “Well of course,” you say. “But lying to your unit leader, even in omission, should be taken very seriously. More so, since I’m pretty thorough with my paperwork. An unknown element assaulting an imperial interrogator? I don't want to give them reason to investigate further.”
“Who called you to tell me about the Shrike?” you ask.(edited)
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"A birdie." You don't rat people out. "Confidentiality is the only thing that has preserved the network. If you intend to report this, if you intend to include names, you understand it compromises the safety of the relevant contacts. Confirm?"
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
"Right," you say, after a moment. Well. She didn't say it wasn't Lyrian. "We're trained to always ask. I'll see what I can do." You put your hands to your face again and run your hands through your hair, before you wince.
"As long as it doesn't go to a full investigation, we'll be fine," you say, uncertain. How are you supposed to explain any of this if you're avoiding talking about Lyrian? If the lack of a suspect proves to be a pushing point, the pressure is going to bear down on Maera and her contact.
Maera's the one who Torrent already knows about, and you don't want her to bear the brunt of the investigation. Plus, you're pretty sure it's probably Luteus, if Maera hasn't been running her mouth off at her other jobs, which seems unlikely. And if you turn him over, Maera will be pissed.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
She's right, you would definitely be pissed.
"If you must give a name, give the one you have." Yours. You contemplate giving her your hatchname, but... no. Even as close as she is to it, you aren't ready for that. It hardly even feels like you, most of the time.
"The news received was only that Lyrian had hired Shrike. The news did not mention you. Therefore, speculation and estimation were used to determine you as the target. Any questions Torrent has can be answered, save for the identities of contacts. Those are out of the question." You would do - and do - the same for her.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
"Alright," you say then, relenting slightly. "If there's an official investigation then-" you close your eyes take a deep breath before opening them again.
"They'll be questioning you. I can't be the one to do it, and I can only protect you so much." And some off your coworkers get a little rough. It's not a position you like being in. What the hell was your life becoming?
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You don't know. You're starting to ask that question of yourself, too. You exhale a cloud of cold air. It's your nerves. Imperial questioning is... daunting, to say the least. The only reason you've evaded it is that you have yet to be caught. You've been seen once or twice, but never caught.
"There are... certain pre-cau-tion-ar-y steps which might be taken, to limit the spread of sensitive information." Your fingers grip the largest mass of tech in your hand, the collection of wires on the back of your palm. You need to find a tech. You knew you would, but you didn't think it would be necessary so soon.
"You will not be informed of them. To do so would put you in a difficult position. However, what can be done, will be done."
The only way to stop anyone with fingers from accessing your memory forcibly is to remove it from your systems entirely, and you don't want to forget anything else. You're terrified of it. There's only one thing that scares you more, but you aren't thinking of that, not now. Your cybernetics are already bright yellow with your fear and anticipation.(edited)
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You can hear her fear grow as she realizes the consequences of her decision. She says there's measures she can take but she's broadcasting fear. The lights on her head turn bright yellow. How confident in her measures can she really be?
"Okay," you say weakly. "Ugh. I'm sorry, this is a real pain. We'll figure it out." You hope. You push it into your words.
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
You don't notice her influence, but her hope eats away at your fear until you strike some sort of a balance. You move away from the edge of your "danger zone," and back towards a safe calm.
"It is business, and it is life." You feel resignation towards this statement. "Nothing is ea-sy." You inhale, and check the temperature of your hands with the sensors in your mouth. It's too cold for a normal troll. It might be more tolerable for Cress, but you don't want to cause complications for her, so, you do the logical thing: You wrap your hand in the loose part of a sheet, in the absence of clean gloves. With this makeshift covering, you lay your hand over hers.
"The best will be hoped for, and the worst will be prepared for. All of this will happen once you are prepared to face it. You are not prepared at the moment, and stress will only make that worse."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
Her concern for you could really make a troll's heart melt. You didn't expect her to lay her hand on yours but you take it and smile ruefully.
"I did just get out of surgery," you say. "After losing a lot of blood. It's probably because I'm a highblood that I can make much sense at all. Thank you, again. For saving my life."
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"Mm." You've been doing a lot of that lately, haven't you? First Prince, now Cress. Both times have ended with your jacket thoroughly bloodied, in different shades of purple. Go figure.
"It would be more beneficial to not require saving in the first place." You can't take a "thank you" because it requires acknowleding your self, which you avoid at all costs. It's uncomfortable. You feel slightly more uncomfortable as a result, so you brush it off. "Be more care-ful. Do not travel alone, where possible. Ghoulisar is not safe for you an-y-more."
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You file that little piece of information away. She's not comfortable being thanked, and you guess that's why she halfway insults you for your thanks.
"Of course it'd be better," you say. "But that's what I've got you for right?" You smile, to show that it's a joke, then sighs as she brings up your safety again.
"Yeah," you say. "I think I'll stay in Arkady if I can manage it. Or just on campus. I was in the middle of a big case here too."
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/12/2019
"You will be missed," you admit, with no more affection than your normal speech. You care about her, and you're finding that, as long as she's not being nosy as fuck, you almost enjoy her company.
"Perhaps... arrangements can be made to escort you, when you do leave the campus." Your suggestion is slow and carefully-worded. You wait to see what she thinks of it.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/12/2019
You smile at her, almost shyly, then raise your hand to your mouth to cough. "I'd like that," you say. It's the first time she's asked to make contact with you, simply because she likes your company. You can't help but feel a little bit elated at that. Of course she could also be reporting to Lyrian at the same time.(edited)
March 13, 2019
Kitty | mpembasVauntlay03/13/2019
You could. You aren't, but you certainly could be. You don't smile back. You slip your hand out of hers, out of the sheet your wrapped it in, and retreat. "There are..." you look at your coat, messy, dirty and gross. "... certain things which must be attended to. Leave must be taken."
You need to return before Nana starts asking where you were. You don't want to explain the stabbing, and you don't want to lie to her, even on Cress's behalf. And since you don't know how to say goodbye, don't know how to socialize, and also don't care to know, your farewell is an awkward, horribly-worded well-wishing, imparted with good faith and hope:
"Heal." Unpack THAT, empath.
Tang | MD (indigo) IT (maroon)03/13/2019
Your hand feels empty when Maera pulls hers from your grasp and stands, glancing at her bloody coat and broadcasting some sort of frustration. She’s going to leave, and you feel a pang. “
Oh, I’m sorry,” you say, hushed. You don’t want her to leave, but of course that’s silly. She’s spent all morning with you already. “I’ll replace your coat.”
That won’t make her stay. You can tell she has things she has to do but you barely care. You get clear bells of hope and faith as she tells you to heal, and she leaves you alone. Your eyes water and you dab at your face carefully. No. You’re not 4 sweeps and wishing for your lusus. You hit the call button for the mediculler. You want some magazines.
