Hello. Do you happen to have resources or suggestions for the every day names that were used in pre-Hellenistic Greece? I tried to use behind the name but they are either mythology/historical names or they sound too late period

The list is potentially endless for the pre-Christian era. Ancient Greeks often made compound names consisting of two words with - usually but not necessarily! - positive meanings. That gave the parents the ability to come up with anything they wanted. Also, parents gave the name to the baby a few days after it was born but often Greeks changed names even in adulthood, when there was something very notable about them that inspired a new name which suited their personality better. Some men however had names ending in -ides, -ades, -idas. And some women in -is and -ida.Those indicate descent from a father or ancestor, for instance Pelopidas is the son of Pelops.

As for the compound names, they can be literally anything. This applies to real people’s names, names of prominent historical figures and several legendary and mythological characters. I found a list with names recorded in ancient findings though. Tumblr wouldn’t let me copy paste it here because the paragraphs were getting too long, so I am just adding the link. At first it has lists of names organised based on the profession or other quality of the name-bearer. This is a little confusing so I suggest you scroll down the article until you find this title:

Please understand that there are cultural differences and language differences, if you see this happening let the person clarify what they meant, that person might just not be familiar with words the western side of the internet use
